Hello, WAMC Land! This month we have a great line-up for the 4th, but before I get to that, we do have one change in programming. You may have noticed that on Friday 6/27, Marketplace Money was called Marketplace Weekend. No, you weren’t going crazy… it’s supposed to be that way. The Marketplace crew has revamped the show for your listening pleasure and will deliver on their core content coverage area of business and economic news. They’ll be adding more technology coverage, a wrap-up and analysis of the week's "Numbers," interesting interviews and maintaining the strong and distinctive approach to personal finance and investing that has always been a hallmark of Marketplace Money. Lizzy O’Leary will continue to host the program. Please note that now our Friday at 9PM show will be the first airing, and the repeat will air Sunday mornings at 7AM.

Now, on to the 4th of July schedule. Beginning at 9AM, we have a 2-hour American Routes special. That’s right, that new program you’ve been listening to on Tuesday nights at 8PM has a day time special for you. Host Nick Spitzer will be celebrating the musical geographies of the Gulf South featuring performances and interviews with Dr. Michael White & the Original Liberty Jazz Band, Topsy Chapman, bluesman Little Freddie King, and pianist Tom McDermott.

ago. Ronald Reagan was President. A postage stamp cost 22 cents and you could get yourself a nice little Honda Civic for around $6,000.

We’ve staggered along with the old stuff because, up until recently, it was “good enough.” Now, fast moving technological advances have us up against a wall. Pat Cooney and his crack engineering team have done everything humanly possible to keep the ball rolling but now it’s time to upgrade and get with the 21st century. The total cost of building a new Network Operations Center to replace our old control room and adjacent studios, is around $183,000. This is money that hasn’t been budgeted and we’re looking for it, high and low. That’s where you come in.

As I said, the good people at the Norris Foundation are kicking in the first $25,000. They are challenging us to raise at least another $50,000 from our listeners who, when all is said and done, will be the final beneficiaries of the new studio. If there’s anything you can do to help – and I mean any amount will help – I’m asking you to take a moment to consider how much WAMC means to you and how you would feel if you turned on your radio and we weren’t there.

You can send a check in any amount to WAMC, 318 Central Avenue, Albany, NY, 12206, and enclose a note mentioning it’s for the Lennox Challenge. Or, if you’d rather pledge online, just write LennoxChallenge in the comment line.

Last time we met the Lenox Foundation’s challenge in just 3 months. Let’s show ‘em how it’s done. - Alan

Crimea?" and Hillary Clinton admonishing Joe Biden to "Let It Go" when it comes to running for President. It's a show so clogged with jokes that Chris Christie threatened to shut it down. There's plenty of material to go around, so why not sit back, relax and forget you voted for any of the people mentioned in their special.

At noon, join WAMC’s Dave Lucas as he guest hosts Midday Magazine. He’ll bring you the latest news, commentaries, and weather from around the region. At 1PM, The Moth will make you laugh, break your heart, and bring you to tears with their true stories told live.

Continuing our special programming, at 2PM Alan will be joined by historian Dr. Christopher Breiseth to discuss FDR's ‘Four Freedoms’ speech. In addition, listeners will have an opportunity to actually hear the speech as it was delivered on January 6th, 1941.

Then don’t forget to tune in at 8PM for our annual airing of A Capitol Fourth from NPR. This Independence Day celebration broadcasts live from the West Lawn of the United States Capitol. Hosted by Emmy Award-winning TV personality Tom Bergeron and NPR's Korva Coleman, the event features performances from some of America's best known celebrities and musical artists. The event features performances by Frankie Valli, Patti Labelle, Jordin Sparks, Michael McDonald, Sara Evans, Kendall Schmidt and Kelli O'Hara; with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor, Jack Everly.

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of our national anthem, composer John Williams will debut a special arrangement for orchestra and chorus of the "Star Spangled Banner" with the National Symphony Orchestra, The Joint Armed Forces Chorus, the Choral Arts Society of Washington and the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets.

The show is capped off with a rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" complete with live cannon fire provided by The United States Army Presidential Salute Battery, an audience favorite and now A Capitol Fourth tradition.

So sit back, relax… enjoy the weather, a jump in the lake, and the fireworks. - Katie

When is the Right Time to Take Social Security Benefits?Provided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley

With Americans living longer, and often times working longer, the question of when to take Social Security benefits is a major consideration. And now, during a period of economic turmoil when many people had been laid off and left without a source of income, some are debating taking their social security earlier than originally planned.

Early retirement by those by the recession is pressuring the capacity of the U.S. Social Security system to ensure financial security for older Americans. Americans can apply for monthly Social Security benefits when they reach the full retirement age of 66. People canalso choose to take reduced Social Security benefits before they reach full retirement age.

Economic turmoil and high unemployment rates have forced many Americans to file for Social Security payments earlier than they planned. If you have an option of delaying that filing, how do you determine whether it’s the right move? Here are some factors to consider:

Depending on your individual situation, you might opt to take Social Security early and delay withdrawing from retirement accounts so your investment return will compound on a higher dollar amount. From a mathematical point of view, taking the money early makes sense. Using even a fairly conservative rate of return, early retirement gives you the higher value. Don't forget that the money you already have in retirement accounts could keep growing tax deferred if you’re living on Social Security benefits.

On the other hand, with increased life expectancies, outliving one's assets is a distinct possibility for some retirees. Some people believe delaying Social Security benefits helps to offset that risk.

Delaying these benefits could mean waiting until age 70, when beneficiaries collect the highest monthly benefit possible. One of the advantages of waiting until age 70 is that the starting monthly amount is the largest starting amount the government will ever pay you. Every year you delay past your full retirement age, your benefit rises 6 percent to 8 percent.

This can be very tax efficient for a lot of people, and it also helps protect against the post-retirement risks they face because Social Security has the annual inflation adjustment—it’s going to be payable for life so there’s no longevity risk and there’s no investment risk.

While this is not recommended for everyone, if you have longevity in your family history, it may be one solution worth looking at.

Two important factors people should consider in their decision-making process are health and life expectancy. While you can't outlive your Social Security benefits, taking them early can change from a smart move to a not-so-smart move if you live long enough. The better your health and the longer your life expectancy, the wiser it may be to delay your benefits.

In addition, if you have a spouse, you should consider his or her income needs. These could be a big factor if he or she is much younger and likely to collect survivor's benefits for many years. If your spouse was not in the paid labor force, your Social Security benefits could represent the lion's share of his or her retirement income.

Another consideration is how long you want to keep working. Work often provides health care coverage and other benefits that can otherwise cost you plenty. Regardless of the age you choose to retire, it is a good idea to contact Social Security in advance to see which month is best to claim benefits. In some cases, your choice of a retirement month could mean higher benefit payments for you and your family. In deciding when to take Social Security benefits, it is important to remember that financial experts say you will need 70 percent to 80 percent of your pre-retirement income to have a comfortable retirement. Since Social Security replaces only about 40 percent of pre-retirement income for the average worker, it is important to have pensions, savings and investments.
