By connecting with her community, a Wainuiomata Councillor is hoping that the valley can connect with potential visitors.

Councillor Margaret Willard says up to 100,000 visitors come to the valley every year and she wants to have those people spend money in the community.

“We have the potential to be like Shan-non, where no one used to stop and now a few shops have opened that attract people to the community,” Mrs Willard says.

This is where she hopes that she can get ideas from the community, as it will benefi t them as well.

She says most visitors go through the valley to go to Catchpool Valley or Horse Trekking, but very few actually spend money in the valley.

“If we had something in the valley that

could make people stop here it would benefi t the community.”

One of her ideas is to use the translation of Wainuiomata, which means big water, and have a water feature.

She says the Queen Street Reserve would be a perfect place to have a water feature because it has not been used for much.

This is Mrs Willard’s second term in offi ce and she is hoping, along with attracting more visitors to the area, to change the perception that Wainuiomata has with people outside of the valley.

“We are a great community and I want everyone to know that, not just people from Wainuiomata.”

In the past, Mrs Willard has worked with youth and has helped set up neigh-bourhood groups that have connected people in their community for support.

Continued from page 1Head girl for 2014, Anchal believes

achieving easier communication be-tween the younger and older students is fundamental for the year ahead.

“It’s about making it easier to commu-nicate between each other and making it less scary, as well as making students feel more comfortable while at school,” she says.

The deputies, Ashleigh and Tyler, both want to tackle bullying inside and outside the school grounds and also enforce a positive vibe among students.

Tyler also wants to have a focus on getting students more involved in sport.

Holding these representative positions can be quite a challenge for some which is why last year’s head students gave them some advice.

Anchal says they were told it would be hard at the start but it would be fun and worthwhile.

“We have to keep focused on our school work as it is level three and is important. It’s a matter of keeping yourself balanced

throughout the year,” Anchal says. At Wainuiomata High School, head

students are expected to get involved with the organisation and running of events such as athletics, spirit week and numerous charity days.

The fi rst event the students will be involved in this year is Valentine’s

Day. They will be in charge of setting up the school’s ‘love box’ that fellow students can use to send their special messages.

This year cupid will be played by the school’s head boy.

All four students also have the chance to be on the organising committee for this year’s formal.

“The biggest thing this year for me is to represent the school,” Ashleigh says.

Callum and Tyler both say it is about showing off their pride and respect for the school.

“It’s about creating a good image for 2014,” Anchal says.

“This year is going to be a good year,” Cal-lum says.

Callum, Anchal, Tyler and Ashleigh will address the school at the fi rst assembly of the year next week.

Wainuiomata High School principal Martin Isberg is pleased with how the head students have begun the year and believes they will all do an excellent job.

All four students are in their fi fth and fi nal year at the high school.

Landscaper Tane Renata will exhibit a Wainuiomata-inspired garden design against the world’s best later this month as part of the 2014 Ellerslie International Flower Show.

The Wainuiomata resident will showcase his feature garden, titled Indigenous Retreat, under an international spot light alongside the likes of award-winner Bayley LuuTomes Design.

While this is the second time Tane has been to the fl ower show, this year he entered as an independent designer.

“It’s so rewarding. Even though I’m still learning and still getting my feet off the ground, I’m the only one from Wainuiomata which is a real honour,” he says.

His creation this year sources inspiration from the Wainuiomata surroundings, bringing together the beauty and iconic aspects of the native bush.

“It allows me to create a display that incorporates the unique Maori culture this country has,” Tane says.

The fi rst time Tane went to the fl ower show he was amazed at how much attention his design received. He says there was between 50 to 100 people interested in his creation.

“Even though it didn’t win, achieving that much reaction at an international level was great,” he says.

The plant and garden specialist still has to rethink his designs and come back to reality when creating something for an international audience.

“There is a huge demand for low dependency gar-dens that capture the iconic New Zealand landscape.

“You have to get the balance right and pick the types of plants that suit the garden, which can sometimes be quiet challenging,” he says.

For three years, Tane has worked as a solo land-scaper at Land Life and Culture which is based out of Wainuiomata. He has worked on numerous

gardens in the Wellington region as well as helping with the ‘Treemendous School Makeover’ at Naenae Primary School.

Tane will be exhibiting on site eight, near the Armagh entrance, and says he will be upping the level of his design.

“This time I’m going in with a bang.”The Wainuiomata landscaper says his

ultimate design would be a futuristic ponga garden with lush natives, refl ecting New Zealand’s hard landscape.

“That’s my dream garden,” he says.Tane is looking forward to having his

garden judged by international, award-winning garden and landscape designer Andy Sturgeon.

“I never thought I’d be designing gardens on an international stage. It’s a chance for me to stand up and show off all my hard work,” he says.

The Ellerslie International Flower Show will be held at Christchurch’s North Hagley Park from February 26 to March 2.

Wainuiomata’s main thoroughfare with Lower Hutt is getting a facelift.

A maintenance project began on Wai-nuiomata Hill Rd over the weekend which sees the road resurfaced ahead of winter.

Hutt City Council communications advi-

sor Selina Simcox confi rmed the upgrade was part of a regular road maintenance programme.

Work will include sections of the road being improved and imperfections refi lled - helping to reduce road accidents on the hill.

Work started on Sunday and will be conducted in the evenings, between 8pm

and 5am, to avoid as much disruption to traffi c as possible, Ms Simcox says.

The upgrade is expected take about a week to complete, depending on the weather.

Wainuiomata Hill Rd runs for 3.4km and connects the Lower Hutt suburb of Waiwhetu with Wainuiomata.

Work begins on resurfacing hillPeople are urged to stay clear of the Wainuiomata River at Richard Prouse Park.Regular water quality monitoring results have found the presence of enterococci bacteria at levels which make it unsuitable for swimming or recreational activities.Ingestion of contaminated water could result in diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting. Results of the testing are posted on the Greater Wellington Regional Council website.

An 18-year-old Wainuiomata man who shot a crossbow bolt through a cat’s head has received a ‘slap on his wrist’ for his act of animal cruelty.

The local teenager was charged with ill-treating an animal under the Animal Welfare Act following the incident in October however, was granted permanent name sup-pression and complete diversion recently.

Name suppression was awarded after alleged threats were made to him and his family, while the diver-sion was given after he completed tasks set out by Hutt Valley District Court.

A number of cat owners, spoken to by the Wainuiomata News over the past week, believe the young man should be named and shamed in the community after what he did.

One owner, who wished to remain

unknown, says it is appalling that people think they can harm animals like this and get away with it.

“It’s just not on. It makes me sick,” she says.

Wellington Cats Protection League president Susan McNair said people should know who he is and what he has done.

“It’s disgusting. If he can get away with it, what does that say to the next person,” she says.

Ms McNair says she and other members of Wellington Cats Pro-tection League do not agree with the name surpression.

Moo Moo the cat was left facing surgery to remove the object which entered above his left eye and exited behind the ear. Surgery was conducted at Massey University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

The 4-year-old cat belongs to Wainuiomata’s Donna Ferrari. Moo Moo before his surgery, with a crossbow shot through

Hutt City Council’s ‘Go by Bike Day’ Breakfast event will return to the valley later this month.

People who arrive at Dowse Art Museum on their bikes as they head to work or school can expect a healthy breakfast and plenty of bike safety giveaways.

It promises to be lots of fun with prizes this year for the most creatively dressed cyclists, say organisers.

Go by Bike Day is part of the annual Bike

Wise Month where thousands of kiwis ditch cars, trains or buses in favour of cycling to work or school.

The Hutt Valley event is set to run from 7am-9am on February 19.

Road safety coordinator Jan Simmons says the event celebrates those who cycle regu-larly and encourages others to “give it a go.”

“We’ll be sharing safety messages with cyclists about wearing clothing that ensures you’re easily seen, keeping to the road rules, and wearing a helmet.

“We’ll have puncture repair demonstra-tions and of course we’re encouraging people

to wear their wackiest cycling get-up to win some great prizes,” Jan says.

Go By Bike Day is also a good reminder to drivers to be considerate when sharing the road with cyclists.

Jan says checking carefully for cyclists at intersections and roundabouts, and slowing down when passing cyclists are two simple actions drivers can take to reduce the risk of a crash.

Hutt City Council Mayor Ray Wallace is also going to be taking part and he encour-ages the public to get on their bikes as well.

Dear Ed, Residents should have realised by now

that kids are back at school. It’s no longer school holidays. And just as

some drivers took more care driving around the streets over the summer holidays due to kids playing on them, it’s time for drivers to take care around school zones again.

It is not okay for cars to go speeding past school areas, especially in the mornings!

Just becuase you may be disorganised and therefore late to work does not mean you

have permission to zoom through a school crossing where kids are out on patrol.

I have seen so many cars zoom through school zones this week, just as they have probably done all summer while kids haven’t been there.

But the kids are back, so SLOW DOWN.A new year is not the time to put a new

cross on the side of the road.

R. WilsonWainuiomata

Drivers need to slow around schools

Dear Ed,I would just like to say that even though

your paper promoted children going back

to school, I saw a number of drivers not obeying the school speed limits.

Beware, police are watching you and

remember you could injure an innocent child. Watch your speed.

Darren Master, Wainuiomata

Dear Ed,Usually, cricket seems to dominate

the news at this time of the year…not in Wainui. Reading about the variations of

sport in our local community is great. I especially enjoyed reading about our fl oorball player and his sporting career.

I hope next time New Zealand plays as a

team we can dominate the fl oorball court like we did in the Sevens at the weekend.

F. J. Wilkingston -Wainuiomata

Hutt Valley and Wainuio-mata residents seem to be sluggish with recycling their unwanted Televisions even though they are encouraged to do so by Government.

The region has been slow to take advantage of the Televi-sion TakeBack programme, launched by Minister for the Environment Amy Adams as part of the nationwide digital switchover in August.

Just under 1500 old televi-sions have been collected

from the Lower Hutt so far however, the ministry is warning residents higher fees could be on the way for people yet to dispose of their old sets.

The initiative is encourag-ing the public to recycle their unwanted televisions divert-ing them from landfi lls.

Information on the loca-tion of the drop-off sites in and around the Wellington region can be found online at www.tvtakeback.govt.nz.

New Zealand dis-rupted the South African sevens team on Saturday night to win 21-0.

The match was sewn up in the fi rst half through three brilliant tries to the hosts, and much de-served victors.

The Sevens Wel-lington is the fifth tournament of the world series and was held in Wellington. The next round is held in Japan over March 22-23.

Those soon past youth should have their say,At council meets their words may sway.Maybe time for deeds more bold,Let’s see what future lies unfold. The young like sun, the old like rain,We need them both to make a gain.No matter what’s the problem’s size,Let the answers all be wise.

WISE COUNCIL

It may have taken Darryl Cooley six years to get his 1982 Morris Mini to its current state but, it is defi nitely in a league of its own now.

Although it is not quite original, it is still a classic. Powered by a donor 1275cc MG Metro engine, Darryl has installed new brakes, changed the paint colour, added a different gearbox and tidied it up here and there to create the perfect little car.

“I’ve been in the motor industry all my life, so I’ve always had an interest in cars. But really I think my dad helped kick start the inter-est in cars. He always tinkered with his cars and I guess it just stuck,” he says.

Over the years, Darryl says he must have owned between 30-40 cars and done up even more as part of his career.

Darryl restored his Mini in his garage, importing parts from the United Kingdom and working on it every now and then.

“Parts were easy to get; I could get them here in fi ve days. It was great.

“I did everything. It was a fun

project to complete,” he says. This is not the fi rst time Darryl

has got his hands greasy. Other than restoring his current pride and joy and having a little bit of experience racing cars, he has also built his own sports car – a Chevron powered by a 1200cc Datsun engine.

Now retired, Darryl is Wainuio-mata’s ultimate car guy. He even possesses his very own miniature raceway for slot cars set up at his home.

Darryl loves his Mini, however if he could have another car, he says it would have to be a Mk I Ford Escort.

“But anything classic would do.”The Wainuiomata resident ex-

hibited his Mini Cooper replica at the British Car Day in the Hutt Valley last weekend and says there are many more trips and days out planned.

Born in Lower Hutt but now living in over the hill, Darryl calls Wainuiomata home.

He is a member of t he Constructors Car Club and Minis Of Wellington Owners Group (MOWOG), and says his four sons are also mad about cars.

A project to help young people develop and support personal ca-reer dreams and aspirations will be held in Wainuiomata next Monday.

While life is an uphill battle some of the time, the iDream Project, run by managing director Ray Bishop, aims to help young New Zealand-ers achieve their personal journeys of success.

Residents from Wainuiomata that attend the project will see videos of more than 50 well-know New Zealanders who have shared their successes with Mr Bishop in order to assist young people improve their lives.

Mr Bishop will be running two

workshops, one at Wainuiomata High School and the other at Wainuiomata Library.

“I have designed a ‘navigation service’ that is designed to guide young people to different social services provided by the Govern-ment, should they require assis-tance,” Ray says.

He says the project will hopefully assist young people to utilise the online resources after school to help them achieve their personal dreams.

The projects will kick off on February 17 at 10am.

For more information on the project, phone Ray Bishop on 021 0267 9302. Alternatively visit www.theidreamproject.com.

The nationwide road safety campaign targeting speeding and other risky behaviour wrapped up recently with Wainuiomata Police thanking motorists for making it a safer summer for all road users.

Residents allegedly responded ‘overwhelmingly positive’ towards the two month-long campaign, which saw the 4km/h reduced speed threshold extended for the fi rst time beyond traditional holiday periods.

The campaign was launched on 1 December and came to an end at midnight on January 31. Police say a record low road toll for 2013 was seen and one of the lowest ever January tolls was recorded.

National manager road policing Superintendent Carey Griffi ths says the fi gures refl ect a continu-ing downward trend, with statistics showing that 254 fatalities were recorded in 2013, the lowest road toll in 60 years, compared with 308 in 2012.

Other fi gures show 19 deaths were recorded in January 2014 and are the second lowest number for January since monthly records began in 1965.

Wainuiomata sergeant Bradley Allen believes the campaign was effective this year in all com-munities around New Zealand.

The 4km/h threshold remains permanently in force around all schools and there will be no tolerance for anyone speeding in these areas and putting New Zealand’s most vulnerable road users at risk.

Police will also be maintaining a strong focus on targeting speed, drink driving, and other high risk behaviour on our roads throughout the rest of the year.

New Zealand Transport Agency road safety director Ernst Zollner says the support from New Zealanders for the efforts of police to keep our roads safe over the past two months is great.

“Drivers themselves deserve huge credit for taking responsibility for their own safety, and for taking their feet off the accelerator,” he says.

While it will take several months until a full assessment of the campaign can be carried out, feedback indicates the vast majority of motorists stopped for speeding were apologetic, with fewer complaints generally,” Mr Griffi ths says.

The 4km/h holiday speed threshold was intro-duced in 2010.

Support

Wainuiomata Neighbourhood Support would like to welcome two new groups to the area - one on Hyde Street and the second group on Petrie Street.

On a sourer note, after becoming a victim of attempted theft from vehicle, I thought it would be a good idea to look at protecting your vehicle.

A message to the person or persons who made the attempt, I have handed in your screwdriver to the police and if you give me your name and address they will be more than happy to return it to you.

There are a number of things you can do to reduce the opportunity of having your vehicle stolen or broken into.

Protect your vehicle: Keep your vehicle keys with you; have

spares at home or work; don’t hide a spare key on the car (thieves will fi nd it); always lock your car; park in busy, open, well-lit areas; use attended, secure parking buildings if possible; and if you

Tips to protect your vehicles

garage your vehicle at home, ensure the garage and car is locked.

Protecting car contents:Don’t leave things on display; keep

valuables (money, mobile phone, cheques, credit cards) on you or at home (not in the glove box or under a seat); keep bags, luggage, coats locked

out of sight in the boot; keep a record of car stereo serial numbers.

Additional security options:Install a car alarm and electronic

engine immobiliser (which prevents the vehicle from being started); use a steer-ing wheel club or lock, lockable fuel cap and wheel nuts; etch your registration or Vehicle Identifi cation Number (VIN) on windows, windscreens and headlights.

Preventing motorcycle theft: Keep your keys on you at all times; use

an ignition or steering lock; use a strong, thick chain and ‘U’ lock; keep the chain off the ground to make it harder to cut; secure your motorcycle to something solid that can’t be moved; keep your hel-met with you or use a helmet lock; install an alarm or other anti-theft/immobiliser device; garage your motorcycle and lock both; use a motorcycle cover.

Follow these simple tips and you can reduce the opportunity, frustration, expense and inconvenience of vehicle crime. Your insurer may also give you premium discounts for doing so.

If you see someone acting suspiciously around a vehicle please dial 111.

Wainuiomata Redcoats – formally Professionals Hutt City Ltd – wrapped up its community colouring in competition recently with local children Elesha Smith, 10, and Ezioh Jenkins, 7, winning this time around.

The competition was for the children in Wainuiomata to complete over the Christmas break.

The winning entries were the most creative, with Elesha’s made out of ripped up Christmas paper and Ezioh’s divided into colourful shapes.

The redcoats received hundreds of entries and a new competition will be launched in coming months.

A community-focused sports tourna-ment gave the Wainuiomata community a chance to celebrate Waitangi Day a little differently this year.

The day, which featured games of netball and touch rugby, was organised by Sport Wainuiomata with the overall aim to promote activities for the public to participate in.

Organisers Peter Cowan and Keri Coleman say the day was “very suc-cessful” and it was great to see what the community wants in terms of sporting

events. The Waitangi Day event saw about 100

people attend, with eight netball teams and six touch teams playing.

It shows that the community supports these types of events, Peter and Keri say.

“Opportunities to play sport for Wai-nuiomata are targeted at the elite or premier players and High School Stu-dents; that leaves most of the community without any opportunities. We aim to remedy that,” Keri says.

The action on the court and field resulted in some high-intensity sporting entertainment for those that came down

to watch on their day off. “We are grateful for the working

relationship between ourselves and Wainuiomata High School, this is the real success. Being able to use the facili-ties outside of school hours when they would be otherwise just sitting there,” Keri says.

The event could not have run without the support of the community and sponsors. Keri says thanks for making the event successful.

The next sports day is set to run in June as part of the Queen’s Birthday celebrations.

Although holding a lead position, Jake Whitaker must keep up his pace and not slack if he is to complete the KTM Extreme Enduro series on top of the podium.

Round four of fi ve kicked off in Te Puke over the weekend and saw the young Husaberg FE250 rider fi nish third overall.

In the fi rst race Whitaker fi nished with a time of 55 seconds – one of his worst results of the day. In the subsequent nine races he improved, clocking in times of less than 50 seconds, and fi nishing with a total time of eight minutes-59 seconds.

Ripping around the man-made track at Te Puke Agricultural and Pastoral Showgrounds in true Whitaker style, the Wainuiomata rider recorded his fastest time of 47 seconds in race nine.

With the glory of winning the series still left to ride for, Whitaker is set to refl ect on the weekend’s race and improve ahead of the next round of the series.

Tokoroa’s Chris Birch won the pro division on Saturday, fi nishing with a fi nal time of eight minutes-thirty seconds, and the day’s fastest time – 46 seconds. The dominant rider in the women’s series this season is Natasha Cairns of Thames.

There are fi ve rounds in the KTM series, the fi fth and fi nal round to be held in Oparau over Easter - April 20 and 21.

In the series, riders have been able to discard the worst result, with points from only four of the fi ve events to be counted as part of fi nal placing. So far this season, Whitaker’s worst result was a fi fth placing he achieved during round two.

A new artifi cial turf has been installed at Wainuiomata High School, after two years of preparation and funding.

The upgrade saw a new surface laid at the venue recently, enabling members of Wainuio-mata Hockey Club to train on an appropriate surface.

The club’s junior convenor Barbara Meiklejohn says members are very excited to fi nally have a good training surface and are looking forward to the start of the hockey season.

“We are very thankful to the high school board of trustees for agreeing to the installation and believe it will prove to be an asset to the school and community,” she says.

The fi rst round of funding towards the instal-lation was a $500 Community Stars donation received from Clive’s Chemist. This was followed by a substantial grant from Infi nity Foundation.

Barbara says funding allowed the club to purchase new turf and install it on one third of the training area. The remaining two thirds is covered with recycled turf sourced from the National Hockey Stadium in Newtown.

“Installation of the old turf involved huge physical effort. The rolls of turf were very heavy so it took several people to unroll each one and move it into position,” Barbara says.

“We had a fantastic turn-out of helpers and many hands made light work, or at least ‘lighter’. The fi nal stages of trimming the turf to fi t and gluing pieces together were a joint effort,” she says.

The Wainuiomata-based club is set to hold an open day in coming weeks. Barbara says the club will now work on obtaining funding for some regulation hockey goals, lighting and replacement of the old turf with new.
