Catherine Wylde, events advisor, Greater Wellington Regional Council says that the initiative has been run-ning since 2006 and has been a great success.

“We put it on for families looking for things to do for free,” she says.

“It is also great that they can learn about more areas of the region,”

The program takes place every Thursday throughout the hutt and showcases the native bush in these areas.“A lot of people throughout the city

don’t realise that they have some great

native bush just a short distance from where they live,” Catherine says.

“It is only ever a walk or a really short drive away.”

The groups organising the event have also organised the upcoming PAWS is the park event where people can bring their dogs down for a bush walk as well.

“We make sure that all dogs must be on the lead so to teach people to keep their dogs under control so they don’t kill kiwi,” Catherine says.

It is because of programs like this that people are more likely to see a kiwi in the wild, although none were seen today everyone was assured they are out there.

New Zealand’s fi rst per-manent beacon of light, operated by New Zea-land’s only female keeper is open to the public this Saturday, January 17, marking 156 years of it’s stature.

The Pencarrow Light-house was assembled from 480 packages which were shipped from England in 1858, and lighthouse keeper Mary Jane Bennet managed the colza oil light as it shone for ships coming in and out of Wel-lington Harbour.

Discontinued when a lower level lighthouse was built around 50 years later, the landmark was restored in 1980 and still stands today.

In conjunction with Wellington Anniversary weekend, Heritage Desti-nations Manager Central

Amy Hobbs says tours will be taking people in and out of the landmark over the course of the day.

“The tour inside is free, although Koha is appre-ciated – with donations going back to the light-house,” she says.

Although people can walk and cycle to the light-house at no cost, Heritage Destinations will also be running a tour bus that takes people to and from the area for a fee.

“It’s an iconic building in Wellington, with some really amazing people-related stories.

“I recently talked to a lady who’s parents ran it in the 60s.”

Amy recommends bring-ing warm clothing and wearing good walking shoes, and suggests pack-ing a picnic.

“There are some really great views – especially

Regional beacon opens to public

from inside the light-house.

“I’ve been up there on a calm sunny day and you can see the South Island – the Kaikoura ranges and other views.”

Just under 300 peo-ple popped along to the lightouse last year, and Amy is hoping the numbers will be similar this year.

The lighthouse will be open from 11am

until 4pm, and New Zealand comedian and TV personality Te Radar will be giv-ing the tour.

PENCARROW: The nation’s rst light-house will be open to the public this Saturday.

Councillor Campbell Barry has had many highlights over the year, and wants to see the forward momentum continue.

“It was a good year to be from Wai-nuiomata,” he says.

Highlights for him included getting permission for the building of the bridge on top of the Wainuiomata Hill.

Also the possibility of the valley gaining its own retirement village is something that he says is a highlight.

“So many older people who have lived in Wainuiomata over their whole lives want to stay,” Cr Barry says.

He also has highlights outside of his council work including the great suc-cess that the valley’s sporting teams had over 2014.

“The Wainuiomata Rugby Premiers making the Jubilee Cup fi nal was great, it was an amazing vibe it gave to the community,” he says.

“The Jugglers winning their fi nal as well did the same, what they did for

Michael Sharp, coming together like they did was great.”

Cr Barry says that the good year the valley had is only just the beginning and that Wainuiomata has a lot to look for-ward to over the next year and beyond.

“We are on the cusp of change, there is a big opportunity to move forward,” he says.

Part of this change is the Development Wainuiomata plan that started coming into the public’s attention at the end of last year.

Cr Barry also says he wants to take advantage of the bridge getting built at the top of the hill by somehow taking advantage of “the premier view in the Hutt Valley.”

“I want to make the hill an attraction, I am keen to explore that and get it rolling.”

These are just some of the possibilities that he says we have to look forward to this year.

“There has been a lot of work done behind the scenes, we should have an even better year in 2015,” he says.

Plans all go for 2015

By Aaron Meredith

Councilor Margaret Wil-lard has been impressed with the work done around the community and wants to see it continue.

In the last year Cr Willard has worked a lot with the arts over the past year as well as working on people’s Development Wainuiomata feedback via the ideas tree.

She says that it has been great that residents have responded so much.

“Not only just respond-ing but using their own initiative as well,” Cr Wil-lard says.

One project that Cr Wil-lard says shows this is the upcoming Water Festival

which is taking place on February 28.

“I applaud the initiative.”Cr Willard says that this

is showing that people have new confi dence about Wainuiomata, which is what locals should have.

“We should be promoting Wainuiomata, being proud of what we have,” she says.

Youth is another topic that is really important to Cr Willard and says the inclu-siveness of young people is important to growing the community.

“The youth leadership course the hashtags did was great, it was great to see the way they grew,” she says.

“Projects that involve youth give those more of

a sense of belonging,” Cr Willard says.

“It makes every young person in the community feel proud of it.”

A possibility that she has thought of would be pos-sibly a mentoring system similar to Youth Inspire.

This along with a bet-ter representation from Wainuiomata on the youth council is something she wants to see soon.

“I know of a lot of young people who really want to be involved in the com-munity, we need something that can facilitate that,” Cr Willard says.

“We can encourage them to be all that they can be, we can offer them a lot.”

Community centre suffers break in

By Aaron Meredith

A decrease in the number of call outs for Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade was recorded over this year’s Christmas and New Year periods.

In total there were 295 registered incidents, showing a drop from 367 during the same period the previous year.

Chief fi re offi cer Ewen Heron says that 12 of the calls were fi re related, but were mostly smoke nuisances.

Included in the 295 call outs were 50 callouts of a medical nature, prop-erty calls counted for 65, with 110 miscellaneous calls – which include non-property call outs counting for 70 calls.

A fl ooding incident was also re-corded over 2014.

Ewen says the drop in call outs was pleasing to those involved in the brigade as it shows that the community is taking care with what they are doing.

Quiet year for fi re service

Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade last year cel-ebrated its 70th anniversary, having fi rst begun in 1944.

The celebration was held late last year.

The fi rst fi re appliance was a Morris 8 car owned by

former member Ted Smith, who would pick up all the gear before proceeding to the fi re.

By Aaron Meredith

Disappointment is fl oat-ing around the air at the Wainuiomata Community Centre after being broke into over the weekend.

The incident happened on Friday night and senior volunteers say they feel completely invaded and absolutely disgusted.

“We feel we have been taken advantage of,” says volunteer Lou Houpapa.

“Our community uses what has been taken, we had children here but they got bored so they left.”

Another volunteer Wat-tie Robinson says that the

centre has to try and get money to replace what has been taken.

“We have to resort to more fundraising, it is dis-heartening,” she says.

“We are all just shocked and disappointed, we are here for the community to use but someone has taken advantage of that.”

The pair encourages anyone to know anything to contact police about the incident.

The community centre only re opened for the year on Monday, and both vol-unteers say that they are angry that this crime has happened.

For those Wainuiomata riders who want to show their col-leagues over the Hutt how it’s done registrations are now open for Bike the Trail 2015.

People can now sign up online for Bike the Trail 2015, the hugely popular family friendly biking event along the Hutt River Trail.

The event usually sees more than 1000 people of all ages riding the Hutt River Trail and is a popular way for families to ride together because the entire course is fl at and away from roads.

Although it’s free to attend, the event people must register at www.bikethetrail.co.nz to

ensure medical information and contact details for family members are on fi le.

This year people can choose to do the full Bike the Trail ride (25km) from Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt or the shorter 15km ride, which starts at County Lane (off Fergusson Drive), in Silverstream.

Both rides end at Hikoikoi Reserve in Petone where a gold coin donation barbecue will feed hungry riders and support a local community group.

Bike and people transport is provided free back to the start line.

Bike the Trail is an event partnership between Hutt City Council and Upper Hutt City Council.

Wainuiomata High School

Dear Ed, Only the ig-norance of man would convince himself that insects are meant to be killed.

There’s lots of species of creatures now which are on the border line to not being here at all on earth.

Here’s an example that anti cat man needs to pull his head in about cats or he could make lots of

enemies with millions of people who own cats.

Dogs and cats play a role in nature as do birds, spiders and lizards.

Take for example the Moa that was hunted to extinction – now the only relation to the Moa is the kiwi.

In 1956 there were nu-merous insects and crit-ters around like dragon-

fl ies and heaps beautiful butterfl ies – think about it, where have they all gone?

Man has a lot to do in educating the young ones not to follow in their ways and to protect what’s left of what early man has done since the 1950’s to 2015.

By Aaron Meredith

There has been a lot of chatter around town with people asking what is there to do in Wainuiomata that is free.

I thought that this was the perfect opportunity to see what there is to do around the valley that is free, or relatively cheap to do.

Starting off with something that most of us know about, the Rimutaka Forest Park or Catchpool Valley.

The park is home to many walking tracks, six of them can be accessed from the end of the top car park in the Valley.

These include the Five Mile Loop track and the Cattle Ridge Track.

Catchpool Valley is located on the Coast Road about half way down towards the coast itself.

If you want to go for a hike a little bit closer to home, the Wainuiomata Rec-reation area is the perfect opportunity with the likes of the Gum Loop Track and the Tana Umaga track setting off from this area.

There are also multiple tracks leading over the hill to Eastbourne, and its other bays.

Something that some of you may not know about is Wainuiomata’s resident

Summer activities in Wainuiomata

seal colony. The colony is on Turakirae Head,

which is about a 45 minute walk from the end of the Coast Road.

The area is also popular for fi shing, and even a spot of diving sometimes.

Many locals have grown up swim-ming in many of our Swimming holes, most of which are situated around the Wainuiomata Recreation Area, although some locals know of many more holes that are all around

the valley. There are also multiple Mountain

Bike tracks and around the valley, which the same as the swimming holes, many locals have grown up riding these.

Along with the high amount of parks in the Valley there is always something to do on a long summer day, whether it’s a game of backyard cricket or a picnic down a park, you will never run out of stuff to do.

Water rescue in EastbourneA lady is lucky to not

be more seriously hurt after being stuck in Wel-lington Harbour just off Eastbourne on Saturday.

At about 5.04pm on Saturday the 10th Janu-ary 2015 police were advised of a kayaker in diffi culty off Eastbourne Beach.

The 38-year-old wom-an had fallen out of her kayak in strong North West winds and could not make the 100 meters distance back to shore.

She was wearing a life jacket and managed to make it to a buoy which she clung onto.

The victim’s daughter, who had been with her, made it to shore and raised the alarm.

M a r i t i m e p o l i c e headed to Eastbourne

on board Lady Elizabeth IV, and while en-route organ ised a mar ine broadcast on the emer-gency channel 16.

Members of the Muritai Yacht Club heard the broadcast and put their rescue boat in the water.

Michael and Chr is Trudgen from the yacht club located the woman a short time later and pulled her to safety.

She was found to be suffering mildly from hypothermia as she had been in the sea for about 40 minutes.

M a r i t i m e p o l i c e praised the actions of the Muritai Yacht Club for responding so quickly, and keeping a good lis-tening watch on the ma-rine emergency channel.

As summer stretches on

Summer has hit Wainuiomata and children have been enjoying their days off all around the valley.

Whether it has been at parks or down at the pools, Aaron has been down there snapping up many photos of local children enjoying the summer.

These are just some of the many pictures that have been taken over the time, while all of Wainuiomata has been enjoying one of the best summers we all can remember in a long time.

Summer has still got a long time to go so keep an eye out and maybe you will be in the paper in the coming weeks.

Wainuiomata Speed Skater Georgia Hurley had a successful time at the National Speed Skating championships last week.

Georgia and her club were down in Timaru over the New Year period, and all had a successful championship.

Georgia was competing in the interme-diate grade and got on the podium a few times during the road racing section.

In the fl at track however she showed her strength in claiming two gold

time trial that was held since 2008 by almost half a second.

Claire Hinton the secretary for Valley Inline says that the clubs biggest compe-tition came from the South Canterbury club who are the largest in the country.

“The purple and green of Valley Inline were nonetheless visible on the podium on many occasions,” she says.

The championships were attended by skaters from all around the country, and people competed in various races.

Community Hub will be keeping children busy over the last few weeks of the school holidays.

The library has organ-ised there to be two days of story time down at the pools on January 16 and 17.

Both days star t at 11am, and will give children a chance to enjoy stories as well as having fun down at the pools.

At the Community Centre on January 21 and 22 there will be an art session.

This will give people a chance to upcycle plas-tic bottles and create their own forms of art with them.

For more information on these events please contact the Community Hub to find out more about times.

MINUTES WITH: Mark Esdot

My last meal on Earth would be...

One of my best holidays was...

My world trip in 1987, when I went back to the UK.

My guilty TV pleasure is...

We don’t have a TV. We watch DVD’s but not TV.

I’m inspired by...

A decent challenge, people who get out there and do it, and like minded people.

What is one thing that you’ll never throw away?

My little bag of souvenirs from the UK trip, and an au-tographed photo of David McCallum (Ducky from NCIS).

What is one thing our readers would be surprised to know about you?

I have seven cats.

A bean feast, all sugar all the time, chocolate, ice cream, and there has to be cake.

What would you spend your last $100 on?

My business.

What’s next on your wish list?

esdot.co.nz

Tesla, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Plato or Aristotle.

Who would you love to have a meal with?

Owner, Join The Dots

The hugely popular global travel publishers Lonely Planet have just named the Rimu-taka Cycle Trail as one of the world’s hottest new travel experiences for 2015.

The 115km trail, runs along-side the Hutt River, across the Rimutaka Ranges via a historic rail trail, and through Wairarapa countryside to the Pacifi c coastline.

In praise of the trail’s varied landscapes Lonely Planet said “Wellingtonians are wont to boast about their beautiful surrounds, from mountains to the sea. This new trail shows off some of the best of it.”

Positively Wellington Tour-ism Chief Executive David Perks says Lonely Planet recognition reinforces the re-gion’s credentials as an active

outdoor destination. “Ever since Lonely Planet

were the first to call Wel-lington ‘the world’s coolest little capital’ in 2011, they’ve understood what this part of New Zealand is all about.”

Dave Woulfe, Director of Adventure Ventures says the success of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail has helped expand his business.

“We operate Days Bay Boat-shed and the Bike Shed at Pencarrow,” he says.

“We’ve seen the trail act as a gateway to the region’s other rides, with visitors enjoying it so much they decide to explore further.”

The ride also takes in the coast around Wainuiomata which has had a lot of work done on it.

A film of a group of passengers hanging out a car going over the Wainuiomata Hill has made nation-wide media.

The fi lm, which was taken by Henry Hogg, shows three people hanging out the sunroof of a car whilst travelling over the Hill Road.

The video has been shared and viewed over 8000 times on social media, and Henry says she has taken

the video to the police. On Facebook she says that the video

was recorded from a Dashcam which is attached to her car.

She also says that she was only doing the 80km speed limit across the hill.

The video which lasts over two min-utes shows the group of three hanging out the sunroof of the car waving.

The Wainuiomata Hill has recently had two speed cameras placed on the

hill although the one on the top of the road has broken.

The road is seen as a high crash road and has had many crashes on the hill in the last few years.

Most crashes include people driving off the side of the road due to high speed and losing control.

Unfortunately police could not be contacted for comment before deadline.

The Wainuiomata Cricket Club had a chance to celebrate after dominat-ing their rivals on Saturday.

The fi rst team dominated Northern Park winning by 134 runs in the one dayer that took place at Bryan Heath Park.

Played in fantastic conditions, Wainuiomata batted fi rst, and played extremely well in their innings.

The team eventually reached 258/7 off their 50 overs, with the innings being anchored by a great score of 122 by captain Tim Wilson.

He was supported well by Darrell Cole who scored 35 and Matt Cowan who scored 31.

Northern Park never got close to challenging the hosts score being bowled out for a score of 124.

Standouts on the bowling side of things included Jason Logan getting

four wickets for 44 runs off his 10 overs.

The Wainuiomata Softball Club had an extremely successful weekend going through undefeated.

Some teams played two games on the weekend but this did not stop the Wainuio-mata teams from dominating its opponents.

On Saturday, the Wainuiomata Natives defeated Stokes Valley Yellow 15-8 at Wise Park.

This was followed by the Wainuiomata Pressies destroying Stokes Valley Red 23-4 at the same ground.

In the womens game on Saturday the Wainuiomata Rare Breads had an equally dominating victory winning 22-7 against the Giants.

On Sunday, the Wainuiomata Pressies had a much closer game but still came away with a 3-2 win over the Giants.

Both womens teams played on Sunday the Rare Breads had a close 5-4 victory over Naenae and Wainuiomata comfortably defeated the Steelers 11-2.

Wainuiomata lead the womens table, unbeaten after playing eight games, with 16 points.

The Rare Breads sit mid table on 12 points although they have a game in hand over most other teams in the league.

The Wainuiomata Pressies lead the way in the men’s presidents grade, unbeaten after 10 games on 20 points.

The Natives are at the other end of the table, sitting in second last on two points after the weekend being the fi rst win of the season.

Wainuiomata Residents had the chance to experience what going through transition is like in a triathlon.

People who are intending to compete in the upcoming TriAbility Triathlon got shown what was involved and given some tips on what to do.

TriAbility event manager Charlie Holland says that preparation is key to a smooth transition.

“It can be quite daunting but it makes it easier if all your stuff is laid out correctly,” She says.

The attendees were shown the correct way to set up their transition, from how to hang up their bikes to even where their shoes were to be left.

They then had a walkthrough and gave the transitions a go, this included a small swim bike and run.

“If you get the transition sorted that

goes a long way towards a successful triathlon,” Charlie says.

The purpose of the series of tasters that event organisers held was to help people learn what was involved in a triathlon.

“Triathlon can be quite intimidating, this way we can ease people into it.”

Charlie got the idea of these tasters from other triathlons, which all hold tasters for fi rst timers taking part in a triathlon.

She was really happy with the turnout this week as there were so many newbies attending.

Entries for this year’s event are way better than last year, this is pleasing Charlie.

“Everyone is really keen for it this year.”

The triathlon takes place on Satur-day March 21 and there is still time to enter.
