Issac Ngaia, Debbie and Robert Price, Mike Cole and Tom Fiddes.

By Rhiannon McConnellWainuiomata Workshop has expanded

to include an auto store and tyre service at Tubby’s Tyres next door.

Owners Robert and Debbie Price sold Caltex Petrol station in September in order to focus on the workshop.

“We are concentrating on building this up to something special,” Robert says.

“We’ve moved a long way in a little time.” The couple has owned the Wainuiomata

Workshop for 15 years but decided to add The Auto Store in order to serve their customers better.

“A lot of Wainui people like tinkering with their own cars on the weekends,”Robert says.

He says this way people do not have to go over the hill to get things.

“It’s really all about Wainui supporting Wainui.

“You have just got to look after your own.” Robert says taking over the running of

Tubby’s Tyres was the next logical step. “We are basically a one stop shop.“We just want to keep building and getting

better.”

By running the competition Lee hopes to encourage youth to use their graffi ti talents in a safe and legal environment, to create art, not a nuisance.

“We are trying to give these kids an avenue to showcase their talent.”

The tagging for the competition will be done on skim boards and boogey boards from The Depot, and then displayed on piles of tyres.

Lee says by getting graffi ti off the streets they can save the council money that can be used elsewhere.

“They [the council] don’t want to spend money on repairs.”

Hutt City Mayor Ray Wallace agrees that the competition could help decrease the large amounts of money they spend on getting rid of graffi ti each year.

“I think it’s a great opportunity.” Graffi ti costs Hutt City ratepayers over

half a million dollars a year. “I would rather be putting that half a

million dollars into community facilities and youth facilities,” Ray says.

He says graffi ti is very much a community

issue but this is one way to get the young people using their talents for good.

“Some of them have got real talents.”Ray says while there has been an overall

reduction in graffi ti in the Hutt Valley, there has been a rise in Wainuiomata in the last 12 months.

“Wainui is worst hit.”The Wainuiomata Community Centre,

Life City Church youth, the Wainuiomata High School art department and Commu-nity Board member Josh Briggs will also be involved in the project.

A week of registrations will lead up to the Wainui Graff Off, which will be held on Saturday December 14.

Lee says they hope to get at least 50 entries.

The event will take place under the palm trees next to the Wainuiomata Community Centre and the art will be displayed in the Wainuiomata Shopping Centre.

The art will be judged by a representative from the Lower Hutt Dowse Art Museum and a local urban artist.

The War Memorial Library will have it’s layout changed and its computer sys-tem upgraded throughout December. On Monday, December 9, the library will be closed while the ground fl oor is rearranged. All Hutt City Libraries will operate offl ine on the day while the computer system is upgraded.Members will still be able to have books issued to them if they bring in their library card, and reserve books will still be available for pick-up at all libraries except the War Memorial Library.

Life City Church is running in concjunc-tion with Wainuiomata Food Bank over December to give out 200 Christmas food parcels to members of the com-munity.Donations for the food drive will be received from December 1 through to December 21, giving time to box the food and distribute it before Christmas Day.Residents can drop items in the trailer located in the foyer at Life City Church.

More than 5,000 swimmers have been to the McKenzie Baths in Petone in the week since it re-opened on Saturday, November 16 after a $2.3 million redevelopment.Staff have received a lot of positive feedback on the redeveloped baths with a lot of suggestions and com-ments for improvement being received and acted upon. One of the biggest suggestions is around shade. “We’re expecting the shade sails we’ve ordered for the toddlers’ pool to be installed by early December. Staff have been watching how people use the Baths with the intention to add more shade in the New Year.”

By Rhiannon McConnellTwo Wainuiomata locals and master fran-

chise owners have opened New Zealand’s fi rst ZuZu gelato store in Lower Hutt.

David and Beryl Colley say they are very happy to have the fi rst store fi nally open.

“This is about a year in the making so it’s awesome,” Beryl says.

The Colley’s bought the master franchise for ZuZu’s Gelato earlier this year.

They opened their fi rst store in Westfi eld Mall last week.

Hutt Valley store owner Paul Jose is dairy intolerant so loves the water-based sorbets his ZuZu store makes.

The Victoria University psychology lecturer grew up on a dairy farm and has wonderful memories of homemade ice-cream.

“I enjoyed it thoroughly. “Ever since then I’ve been infatuated with

ice-cream.” He says the gelato is the perfect mixture of

Italian machinery and New Zealand dairy. “This is the pinnacle of dairy product.”The Colley’s were very happy when their

gelato recently won six golds, four silvers and two best of categories at the New Zealand Ice-cream Awards.

“We were up against all the long term ice cream manufacturers in New Zealand,” Beryl says.

The couple work in mortgage brokering and property investment and have an interest in seeing people achieve fi nancial success.

ZuZu’s gelato was developed by a franchise specialist in Auckland who searched for two years for a good busi-ness model.

The recipes were created by Italian chef Luca Davolio who was there for the opening.

He says people love the gelato. “We can’t keep up with production.” Three more ZuZu stores are opening

before Christmas in Auckland, Hamilton and Arrowtown.

By Rhiannon McConnellWainuiomata has a new website that aims to

promote all the wonderful things that are happen-ing in Wainuiomata to the world wide audience.

Website organiser Denise Anglesey says Development Wainuiomata have been working towards a new web site for almost a year.

“We realised that if we as a group want to make a serious difference for businesses and the local economy then we needed to start marketing Wainuiomata and what it offers more effectively.”

Denise says they aim to build it up to be a valuable community resource.

“We hope the website promotes Wainuiomata in a positive [way].”

The website went live last week and is now online for anyone to view.

“It feels amazing to have it up and running, especially when random people come up and say really positive things and how cool they think it looks.”

Denise says they are using the hash tag

#getwildlyactive on social media to market Wainuiomata.

“We hope it shows others what we have here and the enormous potential we have as a com-munity and that it marks a new beginning”

Mayor Ray Wallace says the website shows off all the good things about Wainuiomata.

“I think we have now got to get it out there.”Denise says it was an honour to build the

website for the community and the committed group of volunteers that make up Development Wainuiomata.

“I feel blessed.”Wainuiomata based businesses and online

businesses are invited to list on the website. Denise says community, sporting, social

groups, as well as educational facilities, are welcome to list their organisations on the site.

Contact [email protected] for more infor-mation. The web site can be viewed at www.wainuiomatanz.com.

Old Man’s Beard, a fast-growing vine that strangles native trees and shrubs, has almost been eliminated from the city, thanks to a vigorous eradication programme by the council’s parks and gardens staff .Reserves asset manager Craig Cot-trill says the council spends about $80,000 a year on its invasive plants programme, which also targets banana passionfruit, climbing alstroemeria and cathedral bells.“The parks and gardens team search high and low for these plants and do a great job getting rid of them. Most of the work occurs on private property, so we really depend on the goodwill of property owners to alert us to unwanted species and give us access to their land.“The worst of the bunch, Old Man’s Beard, was introduced in the 1920s as an ornamental plant, but soon escaped from garden trellises into sur-rounding properties and bush where it fl ourished.”Mr Cottrill says Old Man’s Beard is declared an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993 and must be removed. “Property owners have two options – either to let us on to their land to remove the plants for free, or to pay a contractor to remove them at their own expense.”

Unwanted plant nearly eradicated

Hutt City is not holding back when it comes to celebrating the festive season. On Thursday November 28 Mayor Ray Wallace switched on the lights around the Christmas tree in Andrews Avenue, with Santa making a surprise visit. The Christmas Shop Window Com-petition began on Sunday. Shoppers will be able to vote for their favourite participating shop and go in a draw to win a Christmas hamper. The competition will run until Decem-ber 23, with the winner announced the following day.

Christmas festivities in full swing

By Rhiannon McConnellThis weekend the streets of Wai-

nuiomata will be fi lled with people celebrating Christmas with the annual Santa Parade put on by the Wainuiomata Rotary Club.

Coordinator Joy Jones says they have twenty registrations so far but four more in the pipeline.

Joy says it is about the same as last year but they are hoping for more to come in.

“It’s not too late to register.”She says this year is the fi rst year

in a long time they have had a school and two kindergartens.

“That’s going to be a bit of fun.” Joy says they have been working

hard to make this the best parade ever.

“I’m optimistic it will be at least as good as last year if not better.”

Joy says their only concern is the weather.

“That’s the biggest crunch and you can’t do anything about it.”

Two musicians have joined the parade this year.

Joy says last year went off amaz-ingly and they are hoping for the same.

“I hope people will come out again like they did last year.

“It’s just good for the whole com-munity.”

The parade is set to take place this Saturday with a rain day of Sunday planned.

This year Christmas Markets will be held in the mall and in Homedale to coincide with the Santa Parade.

The parade will follow the same route as last year, starting in Burden Ave and following through to the mall.

To be involved call Joy Jones on 970 6244 or 027 655 4390 or email [email protected].

Santa Parade plans to be best yet

Joy Jones is still hoping for more registrations.

By Rhiannon McConnellAn illegal rubbish dumper

has been caught and received a fi ne in relation to the repeated dumping of rubbish at the Wai-nuiomata Cricket Club.

The man responsible was issued with a $400 fi ne.

The rubbish, including dog food bags and plastic bins full of rubbish, has been left on numerous occasions over the past six to eight weeks says Wainuiomata Ward Councilor Margaret Willard.

She says the council is very glad the culprit has been caught.

Margaret says a local made her aware of the issue a few weeks ago.

“This is a serious problem that affects the urban environment, the river and land alongside it, and probably marine life.”

Hutt City Council envi-ronmental investigations of-fi cer Alan Pope says they had searched previous loads of rubbish but this time were able to find papers with personal details on them.

Letters to the editor

By Rhiannon McConnellWainuiomata residents need to

prepare for a disaster or a summer drought by buying a water tank says local Deborah McIvor.

“Christmas is coming up and there is a possible drought.”

She says after last year’s drought people should be prepared.

Deborah says they have already sold 20 but are hoping to sell more.

“We just want to keep reminding people that these are here.”

Deborah organised the purchase of water tanks to be available from the Wainuiomata Library because of her concern for what would happen

to Wainuiomata in a big earthquake. She says having a request sheet

at the library means people will not have to travel over the hill to get them.

She says Christchurch showed everyone how much water was needed after an earthquake.

The water tanks are available from the Wainuiomata Library and are provided by the Hutt City Council.

The tanks cost $105 and hold 200 litres of water.

In the case of a major earthquake people are encouraged to visit their local primary school if they need help.

Prepare for summer with water tanks

Dear Ed, I’m almost slightly sad to

see Movember over!I enjoyed walking around

and seeing men who are supporting other men. It really brings the community together.

More now so than ever we are just living for ourselves, but it was great to see so many people taking the inituative to help others and

raise awareness, and fi nally do something for more than just themselves.

Of course there are excep-tions to this; Wainuiomata has a large number of people who are always lending a helping hand.

But a lot of youths jumped on board this month, which was great to see.

Regards, R. Wilson

Great job, Movember men

Dear Ed, I’ve heard rumors about the speed limit

changing over the summer months, is this true?

It seems weird, but I can also understand that the police want to keep people safe over Christmas and New Years.

But people speed anyway, how will this even help?

Drive safely everyone, remember you’re not the only one on the road.

Don’t drive safe for yourself, drive safe for others’ sake!

Too many innocent lives are lost over this precious family and celbratory period, not becuase of their own driving but becuase of other’s careless behaviour on the roads.

Regards, E. Cunningham

Dear E. Cunningham, The speed limit hasn’t changed, but the

threshold has. Drivers will now be ticketed if they are

caught driving more than 4kph than the posted speed limit over December and January.

Police have done this to bring down the death toll.

Regards, Wainuiomata News

Speed limit change?

Hill Road to be re-sealed By Rhiannon McConnell

The Hutt City Council has hired new contractors to take over the job of resealing the Wainuiomata Hill Road.

Mayor Ray Wallace says the new seal will be laid later on this month and into January.

“We have got to really wait for the hot weather.”

The council spends half a million dollars a year on resealing the road but Ray says these improvements will be covered by the previous contractors because of the poor job they did.

“It just was not a quality installation last time,” Ray says.

He says the specialised high friction surfac-ing seal used on the road is worth it.

“That stuff has reduced the accident rate by over 80 percent on that hill.”

The seal has to be re-laid every year as it only lasts that long.

Council has an on-going safety seal contract targeted specifi cally for the Wainuiomata Hill Road.

By Rhiannon McConnellDevelopment Wainuiomata celebrated

their fi nal Business Breakfast of the year full of Christmas joy and fun.

Development Wainuiomata Treas-urer Dave Tompkins says they were very happy with how the year ended.

“The breakfast was another fantastic turnout and success.”

He says the year had many ups and downs but they are looking forward to a great 2014.

“The new committee is committed to succeeding and working with as many clubs and community groups to show the world how much Wainuiomata has to offer.”

The Hutt City mayor Ray Wallace spoke and assured the crowd there would be a lot of development in Wainuiomata over the next few years.

“It is going to be the biggest, I believe, rebuild Wainuiomata has ever seen since its birth.”

He says the vacant schools have been

that way too long and they want to fi ll them. Business of the month went to Brenda Ryan at

BJR Accounting.

Good turnout for fi nal breakfast

By Rhiannon McConnellChildren at two Wainuiomata

playcentres got to enjoy gloop, big bubbles, play dough, paint and all kinds of messy play last week as part of an initiative run by the Hutt Valley Playcentre Association.

Wood Hatton Playcentre president Hannah Mitchell says their children loved it.

“We really let them get messy and do what they want.”

“It’s what kids like to do.”The centre had three visitors check-

ing out the messy play day.

“Hopefully we get some new members,” Hannah says.

Wainuiomata Playcentre also ran a messy play session.

Co-Secretary Karen Sagaga says it’s good for the children to learn differ-ent textures and what they feel like.

“It’s a great way of learning.” Parent Elle Abel says she loves

bringing her daughter to messy play because she learns so many different skills.

Wainuiomata Library also ran a story session during the messy play time.

Karate tournament growsThe Way of Life Community

Fitness Centre, home of the Wellington Region Karate Academy (WRKA), hosted all three rounds of the Karate Wellington 2013 Primary and Secondary Grade League on the weekend.

The event has swelled from 40 to 50 competitors to 70 to 100 this year.

Last weekend round three had 78 competitors from 10 karate

clubs, some coming from as far as Feilding.

The competition was a com-bination of kata (forms), point kumite (sparring), and fun ‘tag’ and ‘sumo’ events for the younger karateka (karate students).

The Union of New Zealand Karate-Do Orgranisations (UNZKO) runs the event.

Competitors were a range of ages, most between six and 15.

WRKA’s Shivneel Kumar (14) scores the maximum 3 points (ippon) with a reverse round kick (ura mawashi geri) to the face of his op-ponent, Keishinkan’s Caspian Tilley (15).

Charlotte Carr got her hands dirty with gloop at Wood Hatton Playcentre.

Ariella Lahood painted at Wai-nuiomata Playcentre’s Messy Play.

Mason Turner had fun in the messy play at Wood Hatton Playcentre.

Stay Sun Smart This Summer

Unichem Clive’s Pharmacy20-21 Queen Street, Wainuiomata. (04) 564 8618 www.clives.co.nz

Unichem Clives Pharmacy

Over-exposure to the sun's ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the cause of over 90% of all skin cancer. However, you don’t have to lock yourself away indoors, nor cover yourself from head to toe. “The good news is you can be SunSmart and still have a good time in the sun”, says Clive.

The sun burns our skin and over time causes permanent damage through skin ageing. “We all know getting sun burnt is bad, but most people still think a tan is okay. The reality is that tanned skin, even from a sun bed, is damaged skin”, Clive cautions. “We tell people that the only safe tan is a fake tan.”

Other misconceptions are that people get burned only when the sun is out, and when it is hot. According to Clive this is not true. The sun sends out different types of radiation – visible light that we see as sunlight, infrared radiation felt as heat and UV radiation that we can't see or feel. People often confuse infrared and UV radiation. When the temperature is cool it means less infrared radiation but not necessarily less UV radiation.

Levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun change throughout the day, every day, each month, each season, each year, across New Zealand.

“One way we can be SunSmart is to understand when you need to take most care in the sun” says Clive. The Sun Protection Alert will feature alongside the weather in all daily newspapers throughout the country as well as on the MetService and SunSmart websites during daylight saving months.

So how do we keep ourselves protected? “The best SunSmart advice”, says Clive, “is still to “Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap”.

• Slip – into a shirt and into the shade. • Slop – on some sunscreen (SPF 30+ broad spectrum is best) 15 to 20 minutes before going outdoors; apply thickly to all uncovered areas including your face, nose, ears and behind your neck; re-apply sunscreens often (every 2 to 3 hours), especially after swimming.• Slap – on a hat with a wide-brim or a cap with fl aps.• Wrap – on a pair of sunglasses (close-fi tting, wrap-around, ones). UV radiation is just as dangerous to eyesight as it is for the skin.

The team at Clive's Unichem can provide you with a lot more SunSmart information. Call in and ask, especially about the best sunscreen for you and your children.

Mall manager Dave Tompkins says he is happy to have participated in Movember but is glad to see the mo gone.

“It felt great and I’m able to eat food without feeling as though I am sharing it.”

Dave says the fundraising was slower than the previous years but as a team he and Josh Briggs were able to raise $150 online.

“Josh did beat me and I intend to change that next year.”

Dave says he has not missed a Movember yet.

“It’s great for awareness and hope-fully helping men pick up on prob-lems early, besides it’s good fun at the same time.”

Community Board member Josh Briggs says he is glad he par-ticipated in Movember and will be involved again next year.

“I will defi nitely be growing one next year as well.”

He raised $140 of his $200 goal.“Getting close to that is pretty

good for a fi rst time.” Despite mixed opinions on wheth-

er he should keep the mo, Josh has opted to shave it off.

Wainuiomata High School teacher Nick Bell says he is looking forward to having his beard back after grow-ing a moustouche for Movember to raise awareness for men’s health.

Nick says he raised almost $200. “I am still collecting donations.” He says he may do it again next

year if his wife lets him.“It depends if my wife lets me

shave my beard off again.”Nick says growing a moustache

was not too hard but he is glad it is over.

“It will be good to have my beard back.”

Movember mo’s are no more

When you think of blood pressure, think of water in a hosepipe.

A certain amount of pressure is re-quired to get water from a hosepipe so in the same way it’s important for us to have blood pressure so that blood can be circulated around our body.

The fi rst published measurement of blood pressure was made in the 18th century, although it wasn’t until about a hundred years later that it was suggested that high blood pres-sure could be the cause of disease. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension may eventually cause health problems such as heart disease, stroke, heart failure and kidney failure.

In New Zealand 20% of adults are thought to have high blood pressure, with both males and females being affected.

During the course of the day our blood pressure goes up and down depending on a number of things, including what we are doing, how busy or how stressed we are, our physical activity and also the amount of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco being taken.

Therefore when measuring blood pressure it means that several read-ings may need to be taken.

People are considered to have high blood pressure when repeated measurements show a raised reading above a certain level and stays at a higher level even when they are

relaxed and sitting quietly. The problem with high blood

pressure is that often people do not experience any symptoms at all and feel quite well, until the blood pres-sure is very high and causing other health issues.

This is why it is important to have your blood pressure checked regularly. This can be done by your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

Blood pressure should be measured at least once a year if you are over 40 years of age, or more often if you already have high blood pressure.

There is no such thing as one “normal” blood pressure measure-ment, but there is a range which is considered desirable.

When your blood pressure is meas-ured two readings will be obtained.

If the lower of these two readings (the diastolic pressure) is greater than 90, then treatment may be recommended.

The upper reading (systolic pres-sure) is usually over 100, but varies and usually increases with age.

A few people with early-stage hypertension may experience dull headaches, dizzy spells or nose-bleeds. However these symptoms generall

y don’t occur until hypertension has reached an advanced stage. The only way a person can fi nd out if their blood pressure is high is by having it tested regularly.

For 90-95 percent of adults with

high blood pressure, the cause is not known and high blood pressure tends to gradually develop over many years. Some people are at higher risk of high blood pressure because of their age, their race and their family history, all risk factors which cannot be changed.

However there are other risk factors which can be changed and these include being overweight, doing very little exercise smoking, alcohol consumption, salt intake and stress.

High blood pressure can’t be cured, but it can be controlled.

For all of us this means a healthy lifestyle and for some it also means taking medicines as well.

There are a number of different medicines currently available and these medicines generally have to be taken every day on a regular basis and it is important not to miss taking any of them.

If you are unsure about your blood pressure or any of your blood pressure medications then talk to your Self Care pharmacist and get your Self Care card on High Blood Pressure.

It may be a good idea to get your blood pressure checked at the same time.

After the building boom of the 1950’s, it was soon apparent that there was a need for a Community Centre. In 1961 the building of this had begun and as the Soldiers War Memorial was to be re-located to the front of this building the following year, the

community centre was named the Wainuio-mata War Memorial Community Centre. Originally a sandblasted window was installed to commemorate those who had fallen in the wars, but after being smashed by vandals three times, this was replaced

with plain glass. Our Community Library, which started on a shelf in the school room in the 1800’s, later moved to the Public Hall in the Village, and was moved into a room in the new Community Centre. Eventually it grew so large that a separate building was

required to house the library collection.Article and photos courtesy of the

Wainuiomata Historical Museum which is open on Sundays from 2 – 4pm and located in the grounds of the Wainuiomata Primary School.

By Rhiannon McConnellGrey Power celebrated a big year last

Wednesday at their end of year Christmas lunch.

Grey Power president Ken Salmon says they were very happy with how the year ended.

“It’s quite pleasing to see.” He says after a hard year, in terms of

membership numbers, it was good to see so many people support them at the lunch.

Ken was very impressed with the service they received at the Petone Working Men’s Club where the Christmas Lunch was held.

“They have done a great job.”

He says they tried to make the lunch af-fordable to members and were very happy with the result.

“We have got to try and strike a happy balance.”

The group struggled with not having enough volunteers for administration roles this year.

However, they will keep running next year.

Their fi nal event is a Crafts and Hobbies Meeting on Wednesday December 11 at 1:30pm.

It will take place at the Louise Bilderbeck Hall.

Ross Summers married Betty Pollard in the Coast Road Pioneer Church on March 29, 1956.

Betty was the daughter of Nola and Snow Pollard.

Snow was part of AJ Pollard and Son who carried out the majority of the roading, drain laying, and kerb and channel-ling in Wainuiomata during the 1950s to 70s.

Ross was the son of Blanche and Bill Summers, who are also well known long time residents of the Valley.

The bridesmaid was Lona Hamilton, and the best man was Martin Hare.

Now, 57-years later, they reside in Tuakau, Auckland, and have four children, 11 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, with another three on the way.

Unfortunately due to a photography problem Ross and Betty did not get any photos taken on their “big day”, however many people said Betty looked absolutely beautiful.

Wedding without photosMore than 60 artworks from mature

students at the Learning Connexion will be on display in the Lower Hutt CBD as part of the About Space initiative. The exhibition, titled This Is Us, will feature every day during the four-week long exhibi-tion leading up to Christmas. There will an artist working at their easel availble to chat about their work.“Visitors can talk with the artists about how they approach their work in and will have the opportunity to pick up a paint-brush and have a go,” CBD Development Manager Cyndi Christensen says. The exhibition will run from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays. It will run until December 31, at 129 High Street, Lower Hutt.

The third annual Piri Weepu Invitational Rugby 7s Tournament was held in Wainuiomata on Saturday, with many teams and fans coming out to play.

The series was won by Pacific Warriors from Porirua.

Wainuiomata Rugby took fourth place overall, as did the Wainuiomata Womens 7s team.

Sixteen men’s teams and four women’s teams competed in the tournament.

Roving photographer Daryl New captured some of the games at William Jones Park.

Sevens tournament a success

Wainuiomata’s Womens Rugby team picked up fourth place on the day. Tau Mamea gets caught, ball and all, while playing the Pacifi c Warriors.

Jason Love gets caught eventually, but still gets the pass away while playing the Pacifi c Warriors.

Shahn Eru gets lineout ball, with no competition from north’s forwards.

Nelson Solomona still gets his pass away in the game against Johnsonville.

By Rhiannon McConnellA free sports programme for

children in Wainuiomata is proving popular with up to 50 young people coming along on Saturday evenings.

The Inf inity Foundation and Hoop Club Hutt Valley Youth Programme is a free programme run by Community Board member Terry Stalworth.

He says the aim is to create a positive environment and keep kids of the streets and out of trouble.

“We are hoping that it acts as a crime preventative pro-gramme with kids interacting with the older youth from the local church youth group and other communities that it will influence them in a positive manner.”

Terry says they have had more success than they expected.

“It is going well with some youth travelling over from the Hutt Valley to hang out.”

The programme has between 35 and 50 youth aged 10 to 20 years old.

Terry says they play basketball and touch football.

“It seems most of the kids want to play basketball.”

Terry says he and his fi ve adult volunteers just want to make a positive impact on the young people’s lives.

“We are happy with the pro-gress so far and hopeful that we are able to get more funding to continue the programme.”

The programme is held at Wainuiomata High School on Saturday’s from 5pm until 9pm.
