Carline says she is not out to get the owner, she just wants these preventable attacks to stop.

“I’d like other people to take notice that these sorts of dogs must be kept on a lead, for their sake as well as other people.”

Carline says the attack has not just cost her emotionally and physically but it has also cost the taxpayer through ACC, the ratepayer through animal control and her employer through lost productivity.

“The ramifi cations go further than just the parties involved.”

By Rhiannon McConnellWainuiomata locals are being encouraged

to sign up to purchase a water tank for their homes in case of a major disaster.

Deborah McIvor organised the purchase of water tanks to be available from the Wainuiomata Library because of her concern for what would happen to Wainuiomata in a big earthquake.

“It’s about being prepared and being aware. “We are just putting it out there that these

water tanks are available.” Deborah says little bottles of water are just

not going to do the job. “They are saying we need 60 litres for us to

survive in a disaster.” She says having a request sheet at the library

means people will not have to travel over the hill to get them.

She says Christchurch showed everyone how much water was needed after an earthquake.

“That was one of the biggest crisis’ down in Christchurch and it’s one lesson we should have learnt.”

Hutt City Mayor Ray Wallace agrees and says he already has two of the tanks at home.

“If in the event there was a major earthquake it will be potentially four or fi ve days until the water comes back on.”

The tanks can run off tap water or rain water.

“It’s a good way of storing 200 litres of

water.” He says they have made it so people can

request one at the library and each week the council will bring the requested number of tanks over. The water tanks cost $105 and hold 200 litres of water. Ray says they are selling the tanks below cost and just want people to be prepared.

“The council makes no money from it.”He says there aim is just to help locals be

ready in the case of a disaster. “It’s all about getting our people prepared.”In the case of a major earthquake people

are encouraged to visit their local primary school if they need help.

Mayor Ray Wallace and Deborah McIvor drop off a water tank to Library manager Annie Reilly.

Water tanks good if disaster strikes

Continued from Page 1.Carline, a runner of 30 years, was at-

tacked by the dog while on the Rata Ridge track above Lees Grove.

She had seen the same dog on previous walks but the owner had always held the dog when she passed.

On the day Carline was attacked she had stopped and asked the owner to hold the dog, however, it was too late.

“The dog just launched itself at me.“If he had had it on a lead this would

never had happened.” The attack left her with deep bites on

her leg and arm as well as scrapes along her body.

In this case, animal control issued an infringement notice and a fi ne.

It is something animal control sees every week.

Carline has represented New Zealand four times in mountain running champs.

She was National Champion in 2001 and

World Masters Champion in 2002. Despite her injuries healing, she says

it is too early to tell if there will be any permanent effect on her running.

Emotionally, the attack has had a big impact and Carline says she was in shock for two days.

“I won’t go over that track ever again. I’m terrifi ed of meeting that dog.”

The mother of three says while she has lived to tell the tale, she is afraid what would have happened if it was a child.

“That child could have been seriously disfi gured or killed.”

Carline says she had been told of an incident a few weeks before when the same dog, which she believes is a cross between a Bull Mastiff and a Boxer, had attacked another dog.

“The owner said then that he would keep it on a lead.

“He obviously knew it was a dangerous dog.”

Professional driver training is more ac-cessible to new learner drivers with the start of the national roll out of the NZ Automobile Association’s free driving lesson programme on Monday.Drivers who have held their learner licence for less than two months and are either AA Members or the sons or daughters of AA Members are able to receive free driving lessons.A tougher restricted driving test was introduced by the Transport Agency in early 2012 which, along with lifting the age of driver licence eligibility to 16, was part of a suite of changes designed to improve road safety outcomes.Half of the country’s newest motorists fail their restricted driving test because they are unprepared and potentially unsafe behind the wheel. The AA says while this has reduced the number of new drivers on the roads, those who do make it through are much safer behind the wheel.

‘Safety Week 2013’ kicked off on Monday, and ACC is challenging Kiwis to prove that when it comes to injuries, what’s happened before doesn’t have to happen again. Each day this week, ACC will issue national and regional injury ‘forecasts’, predicting likely injuries linked to sports and recreation; alcohol and steps and stairs – along with simple tips on how to avoid these injuries. The forecasts will be based largely on claim statistics from the corresponding week in October over the past five years. An online, ‘personal injury forecast’ tool will also be available at myinjury-forecast.co.nz. The online tool will enable Kiwis to calculate their own individual injury risk, based on factors such as their age, sex, what sports they play, whether they drink alcohol and whether they have steps or stairs at work or home. Plus it will off er tips on how to reduce the risk of injury.

By Rhiannon McConnellAfter returning from working in Fiji,

Wainuiomata resident Greg Fowler had the familiar itch to write. He began writing a novel about a young boy with Down Syndrome and six weeks later he had fi nished it.

“It sort of came through me and not from me,” he says.

The Corrections Department risk man-ager was working full time and wrote on his lunch breaks, weekends and after his children went to bed at night.

At the time, in 2010, the book was forgotten until his wife dusted it off last year and convinced him to get it self-published.

“It was my wife who didn’t give up on it,” Greg says.

That was how Jam Sandwiches was published.

Today it is set to be on the Whitcoulls Christmas list and has been compared to a Nicholas Sparks novel.

“I think through persistence I made luck,” Greg says.

After self-publishing the book he ap-proached Whitcoulls to stock it but learnt they only took books through a wholesale distributer.

Undeterred, Greg sent his book to three of the wholesale distributors and received a reply from South Pacifi c Books.

They loved the book and wanted to take it on.

“It was probably the most amazing email I’ve had.”

Although this is Greg’s fi rst success as an author, he is not new to writing.

He says as a child he loved writing and reading.

“Going into a book store, for me, was like going into a toy store.”

It was the exercise books that he par-ticularly loved.

“It was like they were just waiting for me to write something in.”

The father-of-three says he wrote his fi rst book based on something his children would like.

While that book is still gathering dust, Greg says it gave him the encouragement to write Jam Sandwiches.

“It proved I could fi nish something.”Greg describes Jam Sandwiches as a

story about a young Down Syndrome boy, abandoned at the hospital at birth, who changes people’s lives through his approach to life.

“It’s about a Down Syndrome boy who doesn’t quite understand his place in the world.

“With his uncomplicated approach he changes lives.”

He says readers will learn a lot from the main character, Eddy.

“I think they get, through Eddy’s eyes, some lessons in life.”

Greg says the concept for the book started forming a long time ago.

“This turned into something very dif-ferent and, I think, much better.”

Greg says writing from experience makes for powerful writing.

“If you want to write something that’s believable you have to write something you have experienced yourself.”

Greg’s experience comes from his childhood.

A family friend of his had a friend with a Down Syndrome daughter.

“I remember being particularly struck by her and how she lived.”

Jam Sandwiches will be on the book-shelves next month and will have a feature in the NZ Booksellers catalogue that goes out to all the independent bookstores in NZ.

Pictured: Wai-nuiomata author, Greg Fowler.

Greg says he could not ask for anything better. “It’s been a dream come true.”He says seeing the book go international is next

on the horizon. Greg has since written another book called The

Prince of Lost Property, which he hopes to have published next year.

He says the overall dream is to make enough money to make a living out of writing.

“Having enough money to live off writing would be nice.”

Greg says even if the book was not a success he would still write.

“You’ve got to do it as if whatever happened at the end didn’t matter.”

Residents in the Hutt Valley are being encouraged to drop off their unwanted TVs at a series of drop-off events in October.

The additional special drop-off sites for residents wanting to re-cycle their unwanted televisions are all part of the TV TakeBack programme.

TV TakeBack is an initiative to encourage the public to recycle their old TVs, diverting them from landfi ll.

TV TakeBack is also investing in recycling infrastructure and raising public awareness about the benefi ts of recycling TVs. With increased investment, e-waste recyclers will have the capacity and capability to deal with increased volumes.

TV TakeBack operations man-ager at the Ministry for the Environment Glenn Wigley says Hutt Valley residents have a choice of

convenient locations to drop off their TVs in October.

“Televisions contain materials such as lead that can be harm-ful to the environment so they shouldn’t be thrown away, but recycled responsibly.

“TVs contain components such as copper and steel, which can be recycled locally, or sent overseas to specialist recycling facilities,” he said.

The Government has com-mitted funding from the Waste Minimisation Fund for TV TakeBack to cover investment in recycling infrastructure, sub-sidies for TV recycling and a public awareness programme.

Money for the Waste Minimi-sation Fund comes from a levy charged on waste disposed of at landfi lls.

The drop off site is Boulcott School, Lower Hutt on Saturday 19 October.

By Nikki PapatsoumasNoah is a two week old medium

cross breed puppy that is currently being fostered by staff at Wellington SPCA.

Volunteer programme lead for the Wellington SPCA Kirsty Grant says Noah was picked up after some kids in Wainuiomata had been caught handing him and two other puppies in his litter out on the street.

“We managed to rescue Noah, but we don’t know what happened to the other two.”

Noah was one of the many dogs who were blessed at a special cer-emony at the Wellington Cathedral of Saint Paul on Saturday.

The blessing of the animals, which was held in conjunction with Wel-lington SPCA and the Cathedral, was a celebration of the life of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

Animals were blessed by the priest in charge, and there was also an SPCA animal adoption event, and competitions for best dressed, best trick and cutest small dog.

By Rhiannon McConnellAfter six months rebuilding their home,

Riverside Kindergarten are in their brand new building and they are happier than ever.

Owner Eleanor Hoare says it is better than she ever expected.

“It took us six months but we’re here.” The smell of paint is still fresh in the air

and the teaching staff could not be happier. “It’s like a new house, you walk in and

smell the wood,” Eleanor says. Their fi rst day was on Monday and the chil-

dren were happy in their new environment.“The children are all engaged.”The project began as a few renovations

but after sitting down with the builders they realised they would have to rebuild the whole building, and after years of hard work Elea-nor and her husband decided the renovation would be worth it.

She says being fi nished is a great feeling. “It’s absolutely wonderful being back.”She says the new building is warm, roomy

and cosy.

“It’s all the things the other building wasn’t.”Because of regulations, before the renova-

tions at their temporary home took place children were unable to use the toilet on their own.

Senior staff member Lynne Marris says it is great the children are able to go to the toilet themselves again and do things they haven’t been able to for the past six months.

“It’s great the children have their independ-ence back.”

Assistant supervisor Karen Coote says they are very excited to have a staff toilet, after sharing the toilets with the children for some time.

Eleanor’s husband Roy says they have been overwhelmed with all the help and support.

“The number of people who have helped us has been quite staggering.”

Eleanor agrees and says the builders have done everything they wanted.

“Our builders have really done us proud.” Next the kindergarten plans to extend their

outdoor area.

Senior staff member Lynne Marris, Teacher Brenda McCormick, Assistant supervisor Karen Coote, and owner Eleanor Hoare with Irelyn Ricketts, Putiputi Mikaere, Robert Wylie-Vine.

The blessing was the first of its kind in Wellington, al-though there have been animal blessings for the congregation previously.

“It was a great opportunity to celebrate animals and what we do here at the SPCA, and get animals together,” Kirsty says.

Wainuiomata will have the chance to show off their skills at the first Wainui Graff Off later this year.

Organiser and Tubbys Tyres manager Lee Harper says there is one message behind the competition - think before you ink.

Lee thought up the idea after seeing a lot of graffi ti around his building.

“There’s a lot of tagging that goes on here in Wai-nuiomata.

“I come to work sometimes and see tagging on my build-ing and other buildings.”

He says he began to notice some of the tags were very good, and some of these

people were talented artists.Lee says by providing a

safe and fun environment for people to tag in he hopes it will eliminate some illegal tagging.

By running the competi-tion Lee hopes to encourage youth to use their graffiti talents in a safe and legal environment, to create art, not a nuisance.

“We have told kids not to do something for so long… why don’t we say okay you can do it now.”

The tagging for the compe-tition will be done on skim boards and boogey boards, from The Depot, and then displayed on piles of tyres.

Lee says he hopes the competition will become

something bigger. “This could end up being

an annual thing.”The Wainuiomata Com-

munity Centre, Life City Church and Community Board member Josh Briggs will also be involved in the project.

A week of registrations will lead up to the Wainui Graff Off, which will be held on Saturday December 14.

The art will then be dis-played in the Wainuiomata Shopping Centre.

The art will be judged by a representative from the Lower Hutt Dowse Art Museum and a local urban artist.

The Fire Service is urging people to install smoke alarms in garages and other outside rooms being used as a sleep out, following last week’s death of a Masterton man in a garage fi re.

National Manager of Fire Inves-tigation Peter Wilding said at least one person dies every year in a fi re in shed, garage, caravan or other building being used as a bedroom.

“Since 2005, 11 people have died in these types of fi res and we can fi nd no evidence that any of them had a smoke alarm installed.

“In some cases the fires were

quite small but quickly used up the oxygen and generated toxic gases, leading to death.”

He said smoke alarms can alert neighbours, family or friends living in the house on the property, as well as those inside the sleep out. “Hav-ing a smoke alarm in an sleep-out signifi cantly improves someone’s chances of getting out alive if there is a fi re.”

He said using a garage as a sleep out was a common practice for many extended families, teenagers and as a low cost rental option.

“Garages are typically open plan

and fi res grow quickly, often fed by stored items such as cardboard boxes, furnishings and fl ammable materials like motor oil, petrol and solvents.”

Mr Wilding said a long life smoke alarm should be installed in every room used for sleeping including, sleep-outs, garages and caravans, even when they are only used oc-casionally.

Each year, there are over 300 fi res in garages, sleep outs and caravans.

In almost all cases (average 97 per cent), there were no smoke alarms installed.

Installing smoke alarms a must

By Rhiannon McConnellThose interested in learning a new hobby

or joining a club should head along to the Hobby Expo being held at the Holy Trinity Church next Saturday.

Co-organiser Karl Dickson says it is the fi rst time the event has been run and is happening at the same time as the Church garage sale.

Karl says they are trying to create an event to show people what is on offer apart from sports in Wainuiomata.

“Sports are not the cure for all young people.”

He and Andrew Robertson decided to put together an event which will feature different groups, hobbies and clubs from around the Valley.

“We thought let’s just start something and start small.”

Karl says he will consider it a success if just fi ve people turn up and have a good time.

But he does have his eyes on the future of the event.

“I’d like to see if become annual and grow and develop.”

He says it is about showing locals what Wainuiomata has to offer.

“The heart of it is also serving the com-munity.”

The Model Railway Club is one group that will be there along with model boats, aircrafts and a few more.

Karl says after next week’s fi rst event they will see what other interest groups could get involved.

He says clubs can struggle because people do not know they exist.

“I know some clubs do struggle to get numbers.”

But he says by people seeing what the clubs do more people will join.

“There’s real value in having an interest.” The Hobby Expo has a $1 charge for

adults but it is free for children.

Margaret Willard has been voted back into council for a second term for the Wainuiomata Ward.

“I am very appreciative of everyone that voted and supported my campaign.”

Margaret says she is looking forward to working with her new co-councillor, whom she has already served with on the Wainuiomata Community Board.

“We will have compatible strengths.”She says in her previous time on council

everybody bought strengths that worked together to get things done.

“I expect that to carry on.“I’d like to build on our achievements.” She says she will be focusing on resisting the

As the youngest councillor ever elected for the Wainuiomata ward, Campbell Barry says he is looking forward to getting stuck in.

“I am really revving to go.”The 22-year-old has served on the Wai-

nuiomata Community Board but this is his fi rst go at a councillor level.

“I’m really stoked with the results.“It’s been very humbling the amount of

votes I was fortunate enough to get.” He says he is grateful to all the people

With a landslide vote Hutt City Mayor Ray Wallace is back for another term and is keen to keep improving the Hutt Valley. The returning mayor says he fought hard, and was campaigning right up to Friday night. “I took nothing for granted.”However, he says there is still a place for unsuccessful candidates to make a differ-ence in the community. “Everybody will have a role to play in making our city a better place.”Ray won the election against Phil Stratford

by 86 percent or 21,439 votes. His majority of 18,000 is the largest recorded in a Lower Hutt mayoral contest. His contender Phil Stratford received 3,311 votes. “It’s my understanding, it’s an unprec-edented result,” he says. Ray says he has worked hard for the city and plans to continue his hard work into the next term. “It perfectly positions us now to get on with what we said we would do.” Ray says he will be focusing on Walter

Nash Stadium upgrade, a new convention centre, and the Sportsville concept and improving and upgrading the libraries and community centres. He says he is pleased Campbell Barry and Margaret Willard have been appointed as councillors for the Wainuiomata Ward. “I’m confi dent with who’s been elected.” Ray says the positive result is a refl ection of the hard work he and the council have contributed during his fi rst term as mayor.

Then& Now

The fi rst Settlers arrived in the valley well over one hundred years before there was a hotel here. In fact the land used for the Empire Hotel was once a transit camp and buildings had to be cleared in 1954 before work on the Hotel could begin.

In front and to the right of today’s entrance to the hotel was the Shady Dell Dairy.

Understandably, the opening of a Hotel

in the valley was much anticipated, as can be seen by the following article which was published in the Evening Post on October 13 1955:

“ T h e y Wa i t e d – No t i n Va i nA score of perspiring men gazed down the main road shimmering in yesterday afternoon’s heat.

They ran dry tongues over their lips and

occasionally took their eyes off the road to gaze at their watches.

About the same time a car left Wellington and headed towards them, through the Hutt and over the hill as fast as the law allowed.

They saw it coming and forced a hoarse hurrah from their parched throats. The driver grinned as he walked through them waving an oblong of paper.

They followed him inside the building and the barman grinned and reached for a glass. The license had arrived. The Wainuiomata Hotel was open”

Take a walk down memory lane and see Frank Raymond Jenkins marry Florence Wood in the Wesleyan Church, Wainuio-mata.

On 28 December, 1920, the couple were married by the Rev. B F Rothwell.

The following article was written in the Dominion, 31 December 1910:

Wedding at Wainui-o-mataA pretty wedding took place at the Wes-

leyan Church, Wainui-o-mata this week when Miss Florence Wood, daughter of Mr. James J. Wood, was married to Mr Frank Raymond Jenkins, son of Mr. E. J. Jenkins, of Dunedin, and late of Petone.

The bridesmaids were Misses Annie and Elsie Wood, sisters of the bride, and Miss Alice Jenkins, sister of the bridegroom. Mr. “Len” Jenkins, cousin of the bridegroom, was best man, and Mr. Bert Benall, cousin of the bride, was groomsman.

The bride’s dress was of cream chiffon

taffeta, trimmed with lace and pearls, and she wore the customary veil and orange blossoms, and carried a beautiful shower bouquet.

The bridesmaids’ dresses were of cream delaine.

The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr. Rothwell, of Lower Hutt, and the bride was given away by her father.

The service was choral, Mrs. Wakelin presiding at the organ.

A reception was afterwards held at “Northbrook” and in the evening at the schoolhouse.

The presents were numerous, the bride-groom’s present to the bride being a pearl pendant, and to the bridesmaids gold lockets.

By Rhiannon McConnellA Wainuiomata Community Patrol member

has created a training programme that has been picked up by Community Patrols across New Zealand.

District training coordinator and Wainuio-mata patrol coordinator Michael Rosser says he started developing the training module after volunteering for the patrol.

“I found to my horror that there was no real training.

“I thought I better do something about it.” Michael has a long history in community

work and his background in the Australian Navy and Coast Guard means he has lots of experience with training.

He volunteered 13 months ago after hearing about the group at a community meeting.

“I felt it would be good to give something to the community.”

He says the training manual was picked up nationally and they recently held a day to train representatives from 151 community patrol units from across New Zealand.

“We are just beginning to roll it out now,” Michael says.

He has also created a set of scenarios for volunteers to train with.

Michael says the group aims to make the streets safer.

“It’s supposed to be the eyes and ears for the police.

“If we are visible around the community people will know we are out and about and they might think twice about doing some-thing.”

One of the key reasons Michael says they needed better training was to create a more reliable witness if any members were ever required to speak at court.

Michael says they try to have people in the patrol who know the area.

“They actually know a lot of these kids who are causing problems.”

He says a big problem they face is tagging.“We try and identify who are the taggers and

what is their tag.” Michael says they get very little funding but

they will need to replace the car soon and want to get better night-time equipment.

Patrol member’s idea goes national

By Rhiannon McConnellFor those looking for a fun summer

activity the Wainuiomata Tennis Club is the perfect place to make friends and get a bit of fi tness in, club president Toni Kane says.

Toni moved to Wainuiomata with her husband nine years ago but knew no one.

“We saw the [Wainuiomata Tennis Club] open day sign on the hill.”

They went along to the open day and have been hooked from then.

“Now we know so many people in the community it’s not funny.”

Toni says it is a great way to meet people and get involved in the com-munity.

“Everybody has fun and mixes together.”

She says the club caters for all dif-ferent levels and abilities.

Toni says you do not have to play to be involved.

“You can simply come down and watch.”

She says the club is growing each year.

“It’s growing at a steady rate.” The club, which has been running

for around 65 years, is going from strength to strength and had its busiest open day ever this year.

Junior convenor Julie Day says there were people queuing to play.

“It was just full all day.” Julie says the club had 75 juniors

last season. “My highlights, for myself, are

seeing the number of juniors we have go through our club.

“This year it’s going to be even bigger.”

Julie, who grew up in Wainuiomata, says it is a great place to socialize.

“You meet lots of different people.” Tuesdays and Wednesdays are their

social league nights. The season runs from around Oc-

tober until March or early April each year.

Toni says one of the special things about the Wainuiomata Tennis Club is its location.

“Here you see nothing else but nature and trees and tennis.”

By Rhiannon McConnellThe Wainuiomata Cricket Club has fought amal-

gamation and lack of funding to produce excellent players that are starting to get notice.

Club chief development offi cer Sunnie Chan is in South Africa playing for the New Zealand Indoor Cricket team but it is his home club he is most proud of.

“We don’t have the money. It’s trying to make do with what we’ve actually got here.”

He says the Wainuiomata club is one of the only ones that have not amalgamated.

“We’ve just stood by ourselves.” He says there have been plenty of chances to

amalgamate over the years but they have managed to avoid it.

Sunnie says the Wainuiomata club is a great place to play for people of all abilities.

“The culture here is pretty good.” As part of his job he goes into schools and teaches

cricket and ball skills. Wellington Cricket originally would not fund his

work in the schools. “They didn’t think that Wainui was going to be any

good at cricket.” So the club funded the project themselves. “The fi rst year I did it, it was an absolute hit.” Wellington cricket took notice of the success and

started funding it. One of Sunnie’s personal highlights was coaching a

Wainuiomata High School team full of players who had never played before.

He says they did not think they could do well. However, the team went on to win their grade. “They didn’t actually realise how good they were.” For a place famous for its rugby players, Sunnie

says there is a lot of talent in the Wainuiomata cricket team.

He says there is a real family spirit at the club. “What we’ve got is a small group of guys who want

to do well for each other.” It’s Sunnie’s third year in the development role and

his eleventh year playing for the New Zealand Indoor Cricket team.

He has previously played for the Canterbury Wiz-ards and is currently on the Wellington Firebirds training squad.

By Emily ElliottThe croquet club celebrated its

20th Birthday on Saturday with a gala, mini tournament, and high tea party.

Club Captain Margaret Engle-bretsen has been at the club since day one, and says it has taken a lot of hard work to get where they are today.

“We had to raise $1000 a month to have the club house.

“Before we came to the club house we used to walk to the cricket club, we had a room up the top of there which was our club room.”

She says they had afternoon teas to fundraise, they did catering for mid-winter Christmas events, ran garage sales, held stalls, and more.

“The first tournament we held we had to have a port-a-loo,” Ms Englebretsen says.

She says she believes it is due to everyone’s hard work that they can celebrate 20 years.

“Everyone has their job. There are

tasks people do to make things run smoothly.”

There are 12 out of 30 current members who have been at the club since day one.

“Some are just social members, and some play golf croquet.”

The highlight of the last 20 years is Harps, Ms Englebretsen says.

She says he is a kind man, and was always a help to have around.

“It’s a testiment to his ability to go from moving lawns to New Zealand’s best.”

Ms Englebretsen says they want the club to keep running and see the next 20 years.

“We’ve put a lot of money into it, and it’s open to the public.”

“We want new members, but people are so busy these days so it’s hard,” Ms Englebretsen says.

She believes that once people started to play they would enjoy the game.

“It’s a challenge and it can be a lot of fun.

The club had a pre-birthday afternoon tea on Wednesday, a tournament and high tea party on Saturday, as well as a group lunch at Jackson on Jackson Street.
