    15Kurt Wagner made his appearance in the world on March6, 1934, the same year that Adolf Hitler became chancellorof Germany. The world was suffering under a globaleconomic crisis. On March 14, 1938, just over a weekafter Kurts fourth birthday, the Fuhrer declared theannexation of Austria to Germany before 250,000 local

    supporters, during his triumphal entry into Vienna.

    Narrator: At only 14 months "Kurtie" could speak incomplete sentences; at two, he could read and write, and

    when he was three, his grandfather gave him a smalldoctor's coat embroidered with, "Dr. Kurtie".

    Narrator: A somber air swept every aspect of life in Vienna:Curfews, identity checks, control of all financial activities,and open attacks on Jewish families. People rushed to

    leave the country.

    Narrator: On November 11, 1938, with the sound ofbroken glass in the streets, Oskar Kaunitz and his wifeaccompanied their daughter and grandson to the stationfor a sad farewell.
