J0 Office 696 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn 22, N. Y. GREENPOINT WEEKLY STAR, FRIDAY, jJUNE 24, 196$ Telephone EVergieen S-0665 Vote Primary Day 'Continued from Page One) the fiction? 'The ctecfsioiTisTyours lind yours alone. The candidates for each of the offices have put up the best primary fight that Greenpoint and Wil- liamsburg have seen in the last 30 years. Each can- didate called a spade a spade and . . . speaking of shovels . . . we are glad to say there was little or no mud giinging. The issues were tackled (sometimes skirted) in a forthright and truthful manner and no punches were pulled. Oldtimers and youngsters alike came out each evening to hear the soundtrucks that toured the area. Speeches, from street corners, brought back the memories of the late great Pete McGuinness and his like. This primary is unique. Probably at no time in the history of this community, or for that matter the borough, have arch enemies forgotten their dif- ferences and formed alliances to put together what they felt was a winning ticket that residents of the community would "buy." Yesterday's enemies are today's running mates. And yesterday's listeners are Tuesday's voters. How important is your vote? It's your town! By now we should have made the point. Get out and vote for the candidate of your choice on Primary Day. The polling places will be open from 3 to 10 P.M., and if you don't know your Election District we sug- gest you check with one of the many Democratic clubs in the Greenpoint-Williamsburg area. They'll be delighted to help out. Smolensk! Club Backs Kurmel-Amelia-Finley In an unprecedent move the members of the John Smolenski Club endorsed a slate of officers running in an assembly district other than their own. On Wednesday evening June 15th, the members of the Smolenski Club over- helmingly endorsed Jimmy Twin Bridge Towers Get Painted The twin 332-foot struc- tural steel towers of the Williamsburg Bridge soon will be given a new coat of paint as part of a continu- ing spruce-up program and to thwart the destructive elements of corrosion. One of 52 toll-free spans under the supervision of the city's Department of Public Works, the Williamsburg is one of the most heavily- traversed suspension bridges over the East River. Public Works Commis- sioner William C. Mattison announced that bids are now being accpted for the tower painting project which is es- timated to cost about $75,- 000. The two towers, an- chored in granite bases on the Brooklyn and Manhattan ends, have a weight of 6,100 tons. They are the main bracing for the large gal- vanized wire cables which support the bridges road- ways. COMMISSIONER Matti- son pointed out that the towers were last painted in 1953 and that it is essential at this time to apply a new full prime coat and finish coat of grey-colored lead paint. This will have a dual pur- pose: give the bridge a re- juvenated appearance and protect the steel against the effects of the elements and the inroads of corrosion. The Williamsburg Bridge, which was opened to public use on December 19, 1903, has a traffic volume of over 39 million cars and trucks a. year over its eight lanes of roadway. In addition, the bridge is used by two rapid transit lines and a shuttle bus: the Broadway-Jamaica rapid transit line and the Broadwy brach of the Myrtle avenue Line, and the shuttle bus which runs from the Wil- liamsburg Bridge Plaza in Brooklyn to a terminus at Allen and Delancy streets, in Manhattan. Amelia for democratic lead er, Marie Finley for demo- cratic co-leader, Edward Kurmel for re-election to the assemblyman and Michael Calandrillo for Delegate to the State Constitutional Con- tention.", "Originally, the Smolens- ki Club intended remaining neutral in the fight until the sordid details of the opposi- tion's campaign became known. Mr. Zimmerman's re- moval of Mr, Kurmel and ti.e reasons he advanced for this removal were found to be not merely in violation of all Democratic Party rules but an insult to the people of Greenpoint. Likewise the campaign tactics of the Or- lando-Straub s l a t e were found to violate their re- sponsibility to their voters," said John Songer, Club presi- dent. "In gwticular the members Of the Smolenski CiuD pro- tested press releases in which the Orlando-Straub slate in- dicated their endorsement by other Polish American Dem- ocratic Clubs. At no time, for example, did the members of the Polonia Democratic Club endorse Orlando or Straub. The endorsement they re- ceived was a personnel en- dorsement of Mr. Malinows- ki, the Club's leader, and has not been made by the mem- bership, but has been pro- tested by it," he continued. Beginning this week, mem- bers of the Smolenski Clubi will begin campaign actively in behalf of the Kupmel- Amelia - Finley - Calandrilo. All four candidates' were the guests of honor at a Roast Beef Party attended by some 300 Greenpointers at the Smolenski Club Grounds last Saturday, and were enthusi- astically received. Oldtimers and youngsters alike came out each evening to hear the soundtrucks that toured the area.

Speeches, from street corners, brought back the memories of the late great Pete McGuinness and his like.

This primary is unique. Probably at no time in the history of this community, or for that matter the borough, have arch enemies forgotten their differences and formed alliances to put together what they felt was a winning ticket that residents of the community would "buy." Yesterday's enemies are today's running mates. And yesterday's listeners are Tuesday's voters.

How important is your vote? It's your town! By now we should have made the point. Get out and vote for the candidate of your choice

on Primary Day. The polling places will be open from 3 to 10 P.M.,

and if you don't know your Election District we suggest you check with one of the many Democratic clubs in the Greenpoint-Williamsburg area. They'll be delighted to help out.

Smolensk! Club Backs Kurmel-Amelia-Finley

In an unprecedent move the members of the John Smolenski Club endorsed a slate of officers running in an assembly district other than their own.

On Wednesday evening June 15th, the members of the Smolenski Club over-helmingly endorsed Jimmy

Twin Bridge Towers Get Painted

The twin 332-foot structural steel towers of the Williamsburg Bridge soon will be given a new coat of paint as part of a continuing spruce-up program and to thwart the destructive elements of corrosion.

One of 52 toll-free spans under the supervision of the city's Department of Public Works, the Williamsburg is one of the most heavily-traversed suspension bridges over the East River.

Public Works Commissioner William C. Mattison announced that bids are now being accpted for the tower painting project which is estimated to cost about $75,-000. The two towers, anchored in granite bases on the Brooklyn and Manhattan ends, have a weight of 6,100 tons. They are the main bracing for the large galvanized wire cables which support the bridges roadways.

COMMISSIONER Mattison pointed out that the towers were last painted in 1953 and that it is essential at this time to apply a new full prime coat and finish coat of grey-colored lead paint.

This will have a dual purpose: give the bridge a rejuvenated appearance and protect the steel against the effects of the elements and the inroads of corrosion.

The Williamsburg Bridge, which was opened to public use on December 19, 1903, has a traffic volume of over 39 million cars and trucks a. year over its eight lanes of roadway.

In addition, the bridge is used by two rapid transit lines and a shuttle bus: the Broadway-Jamaica r a p i d transit line and the Broadwy brach of the Myrtle avenue Line, and the shuttle bus which runs from the Williamsburg Bridge Plaza in Brooklyn to a terminus at Allen and Delancy streets, in Manhattan.

Amelia for democratic lead er, Marie Finley for democratic co-leader, E d w a r d Kurmel for re-election to the assemblyman and Michael Calandrillo for Delegate to the State Constitutional Con

tention.", "Originally, the Smolens

ki Club intended remaining neutral in the fight until the sordid details of the opposition's campaign b e c a m e known. Mr. Zimmerman's removal of Mr, Kurmel and ti.e reasons he advanced for this removal were found to be not merely in violation of all Democratic Party rules but an insult to the people of Greenpoint. Likewise t h e campaign tactics of the Or-lando-Straub s l a t e w e r e found to violate their responsibility to their voters," said John Songer, Club president.

"In gwticular the members Of the Smolenski CiuD protested press releases in which the Orlando-Straub slate indicated their endorsement by other Polish American Democratic Clubs. At no time, for example, did the members of the Polonia Democratic Club endorse Orlando or Straub. The endorsement they received was a personnel endorsement of Mr. Malinows-ki, the Club's leader, and has not been made by the membership, but has been protested by it," he continued.

Beginning this week, members of the Smolenski Clubi will begin campaign actively in behalf of the Kupmel-Amelia - Finley - Calandrilo. All four candidates' were the guests of honor at a Roast Beef Party attended by some 300 Greenpointers at the Smolenski Club Grounds last Saturday, and were enthusiastically received.
