Often women feel thwarted, keep brooding or mulling over what they would like to say but do not. Even if the family or society do not encourage her, a woman can always break this silence herself and realise that most of her fears were unfounded. If a woman wants to have a better and a happy life she must express herself, in whatever manner she can. She should assert early in life to negotiate for her space, be it at home or socially.

Date: September 30, 2016 (Friday) Time: 7.00 p.m. Venue: Hotel President, Sector 26, Chandigarh

Aruti is the wife of our Rtn. Professor Rana Nayar who gave a wonderful talk on Kabir on June 03, 2016.

Aruti says that women are really the victims of their emotions as they allow their heart to rule their head. For a woman, emotional empowerment means a host of management techniques. At number one is learning to live without guilt. Be it role expectations or the desire to seek approval and fit into the socially desirable slot, a woman is ever ready for the guilt trip.

Often, the family tends to condition a girl child differently as compared to a boy. She is asked not to be too argumentative and not to contest what is said to her.

Viewed primarily as a nurturer, the role of a woman is to show patience, tolerance and be calm. She is the one to sacrifice. She cannot have a vocal assertion of what she believes in.

It is therefore, extremely important for a woman to speak up for herself, even at the cost of annoying those close to her. She has to take up for herself; only then others may come forward to protect her rights.

If she does not speak up for herself, no one else will. Silence is not golden, it can be lethal if a woman tolerates injustice for the fear of social ridicule or the risk of annoying the family. Expressing her emotions, and to articulate her views, howsoever contrary to those of others around, is extremely important.

Aruti’s talk generated an interesting and a lively interactive discussion with Rotarians and R’anns, a fully charged up situation! Anyway, it was a remarkably candid talk by Aruti, well applauded by all present.

On behalf of our club, Rtn. Dr. Harinderjit Kaur said, “We are thankful to Mrs. Aruti Nayar for opening the windows. You have given some tips to us with which we can think for our future.”
