About The Edsel Owners Club
10
T H E B I G E
On May 19th, the Windy City Chapter had its first meet in over 10 years. All three years of
Edsels were present, with eight Edsels attending, a new chapter record.
We met for lunch in Plainfield, Illinois, then drove 1/4 mile east to the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern
Depot Museum. This well restored little depot was moved from its original location a few
blocks away to its current spot, which at one time was a wrecking yard which contained four
Edsels.
The man who gave us the depot tour said that during 1958-1960, his father was a sales-
man who drove a 58 Ranger with Tele-Touch. He said that up through that time, the Edsel
was his Dads' favorite car ever.
We then visited the Plainfield Historical Society Museum a few blocks away.
Several new people and several new Edsels were at this meet. We hope to get together at
least one more time this year, perhaps in conjunction with another car show.

Hello Edsel Folks;
I'd like to welcome David Fleischer as our new editor. Like myself, Dave has
been an Edsel nut since he was a kid. I think he'll do a fine job. Thanks for
taking the position, David!
I'd like to say a big "Thank You" to our outgoing editor, William Cooke. He's
done a fine job for us over the past year and I'm grateful to him for his efforts.
I must correct a glaring error that I made in my last President's Letter. I men-
tioned that, at the Springfield meet, we had Edsels from both sides of the U. S.
(Pennsylvania and Washington), but forgot to mention Reg Brown driving his
'58 convertible from South Carolina. My apologies to Reg. When you drive a
55-year-old car 900 miles, it deserves mentioning!
Regards, George

When I was asked to be the editor of the Big E I was very happy to take the
job. However, my life changed dramatically only one month after taking the
job. I decided it was time to find a replacement. I couldn't think of anyone
more interested in Edsels than my own “godfather”, my “fairy Edsel-godfather”
to be exact. Most of my favorite Edsels I have ever owned were pointed out to
me by David Fleischer so I dubbed him my “Fairy Edsel Godfather”. David will
do an even better job than I ever could have, I'm sure. Here are the reigns, Da-
vid! Thank you Lois Roth for all your help during my short time as editor, and
another big thanks to you David for taking this time consuming yet rewarding
job!
William Cooke, former Big E Editor
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is David Fleischer from Utah. I am very honored to be asked to take
over being an editor of this newsletter by William Cooke. As your new editor, it
is my goal to provide an informative and entertaining newsletter to deal with
the challenges of owning and maintaining an Edsel. Being an Edsel owner for
38 years, I think I may have learned a thing or two so I should be able to help
you out. Since we are running out of space here, I will give a more formal
introduction of myself in the next edition of the newsletter.
A row of beautiful Edsels at the
Windy Chapter meet included a
black 60 owned by Mike Timothy,
a red 59 convertible driven by
our president George Foran, a
striking coral and metallic grey
Pacer 4 door hardtop owned by
Steve & Barb Whitney and a Cor-
sair 2 door hardtop owned by
Marshall Peters
A customized Edsel was in
attendance. This is owned by
Jessica Fransen.
The car was not inspired by the
Hot Wheels rendering of an
Edsel in this same color. The
similarity is purely coincidental.
pot Museum. The charcoal Pacer
One of our youngest members of the EOC is immersed in an Edsel restoration project. Joey White-
Swift, a teenaged son of E.G White-Swift, has purchased a Pacer 4 door hardtop to restore. It appears to
be a white car with a sunset coral roof and scallop (color code ERR).
In one weekend, the proud and supportive father, E.G., reported that young Joey did the following:
Removed all four door panels, and both front and rear bench seats. Removed dashboard cluster, rear
window chrome decorations, horsecollar and tail light assemblies all for chrome plating. Also removed
front bumpers removed for chrome plating - had to burn off two of the bolts as the ones that hold the
bumper guards are usually rusted solid.
Page 5 Volume XLV, Issue 5
Next weekend Joey will remove the rear bumper, gas tank and exhaust system - and power wash the un-
der carriage to remove the remnants of 50 years of dirt, rust and memories. We were up last night un-
til midnight checking catalogs and E-Bay for parts. Ordering parts such as the brakes and front end kit
and a steel panel to replace the rusted out left back floor. When I left the house this morning Joey was
sitting out back scraping and removing old seals and rubber from tail light assemblies so we can drop all
the chrome parts off tomorrow at Al's Plating in Ft. Worth. Joey is learning that 50 year-old bolts acquire a
lot of rust - but when we are done the amount of pride he will have from tightening every bolt and stitch-
ing every thread of the seats will make up for the sore knuckles and scraped knees. The good news is for
about the price of a good used car he will have a car that is functionally new that he knows how to fix.
And he will have the most unique car at school.
Joey is doing 98% of the work. He is guided by Alan Wetzel, a long-time member of the Edsel Owners Club
who has restored many Edsels. I help out from time to time and often help with bagging the nuts, bolts,
screws and parts removed from the car. Every bag is labeled so we know what to replace or use later.
Plus I am his ride to the work site 45 miles away as well as his banker. In addition, I am tracking time
spent, listing parts used and identifying supply sources - in case we are crazy enough to do this again.
This is a good project for a father and son to work on together each weekend. Joey is working on a blog
and I'll let you know the site when it is up and running. He plans to comment on the work and post pic-
tures after each time he works on the Edsel.
An important repro project is in the works.
The rear window rubber seal for the 58 Cor-
sair/Citation models has been needed for
years, and Harv Woebbeking is pushing
hard to make it a reality. He needs orders
for 100 seals, and at last report he had 62.
Estimated final cost is $120-$150 per seal.
Get in touch with Harv and get your name
on the list, he's not all that far from the total
he needs to complete the project and help
alot of Edsel owners.
