T H E B I G E The 50th Annual National EOC Meet in Keizer, Oregon, was a great success!
By Lois Roth
Above: Edsels gathered together at the meet for judging on Friday
The 50th annual Edsel Owners convention in Keizer, Oregon, had a great
celebration!
40 Edsels in the parking area made for a good turnout, plus we had invited
vintage trailers to join in the fun.
On Tuesday evening we started the event with an Edselcade to the local Sonic
drive-in, which made headlines in the local paper!
On Wednesday, we toured the countryside on the way south to Albany to see the
Carousel Museum, and then to the Hinsch's for a grand tour of their new home,
car museum, and a big pizza feed for 100 people.
Thursday took us to the NW Vintage Car & Motorcycle Museum, and in the
evening, a sightseeing dinner cruise on the Spirit of Portland.
Friday was judging day with a parts auction taking place in the evening.
On Saturday, our group met for a tour at the World of Speed and then a stop at
SMS fabrics in Canby.
The grand finale was the awards banquet that evening with 120 Edsel fans
enjoying dinner and fellowship.
Sunday we said goodbye, with hopes to see everyone at the next convention!

Greetings Fellow Edsel Owners.
On the way to the 50th Anniversary of the Edsel Owner's Club Convention, it seemed as if every route North to
Oregon was closing. Several of us from the Northern California area were planning to head up to Interstate 5 going
north, but even as our dates were drawing to a close, there were more fires that had started all throughout the area.
It seemed as if all of California was consumed in these raging and destructive calamities, and each day there was
even more news that many areas were being closed on the roads that we were eventually headed. Up and through
Redding was closed for a while as the smoke and fire was causing great concern for not only the residents of the area,
but for our little caravan as well. Evacuations were well underway and some of us were worried that we would be
caught in the exodus.
Finally, when I called the first motel that we were going to stay in located in Dunsmuir, CA., they reported that the
fires were dangerously close and that the air quality was so bad that the visibility was severely impaired. At that point,
I made some telephone calls to the others in our caravan and decided to take the coastal route. While a bit longer, it
seemed like the right thing to do because the temperatures were considerably cooler and the ocean air brought a
welcome relief to the poor air quality. It was a wise decision since the trip north to Oregon along the coast proved to be
much more inviting and scenic as well.
Traveling on highway 101 and U.S. route 1, our first evening was just south of Eureka - in Fortuna - near the Oregon
line. The temperatures were in the mid-70s, some 30 degrees cooler than the inland route. Next morning, getting up
early, we were able to travel onward and over to Grants Pass and on to I-5. Soon, we were headed right into Oregon in
time for the pizza party with Mike and Nancy Hinsch, just outside of Keizer.
What a great time that we all had with about twenty or so Edsels all parked around their beautiful Victorian estate in
Aurora. Nancy had created a beautiful garden atmosphere with the help of Mike and the gardener, while Mike himself
had prepared a display of his impressive collection of cars within his huge and outstanding garage. All of the guests
were treated to a leisurely afternoon in the delightful gardens and when time allowed, got the grand tour through some
of the collection of Ford Motor Company cars that were in the newly completed garage.
There was much to do and it always seemed that there is just not quite enough time to get it all done. Back at the
convention site, there were car shows, various tours, an evening dinner cruise on the Williamette River in Portland, as
well as board and business meetings keeping us all very busy each and every day. Then there was the judging, the
parts auction, browsing through the hospitality room where the volunteer hostesses were always on hand to help with
the registration, goodie bags and making sure that everyone was properly taken care of. Finally, the banquet dinner on
Saturday culminated in an attendance of 120 Edsel owners in which we were treated to a buffet that was perfect in
every way. It certainly is a lot of work to get everything just right. There are so many people that helped with this out-
standing 50th Anniversary Convention to make sure that everything was truly one of the best ever.
The entire Convention ran so smoothly that it is hard to comprehend the amount of time and efforts of this Oregon
chapter of the E.O.C. who have dedicated their time and resources for all of us to enjoy. On Sunday, we bid our fare-
wells and headed back home again including a couple of members from across the big pond - England! I want to thank
all of those in attendance for their support and for all of those people who organized all of this work so flawlessly so
that our Edsel Owners Club membership & friends could have such a wonderful weekend extravaganza!
Back on the road again after Sunday morning breakfast, our three - Edsel caravan took some back roads through
Oregon and down the coast of Highway 1. First stop was Lincoln City , Oregon, to check into a great little mom-and-pop
motel built in the 1940s. Overlooking the ocean, it sat on top of a cliff with spectacular views of the coastline up and
down the ragged cliffs. Three Edsels pulled into the parking lot and the motel owner exclaimed that he had not seen an
Edsel in YEARS, let alone three at once! He was delighted by our presence.
From there, we headed back down the coast to Brookings for an overnighter, and then cut over to the "Avenue of the
Giants" in California the next morning. After taking a tour of the Redwood Giants and a couple of stops at the infor-
mation centers, we finally stopped and checked into another little motel cabin complex that was located right in the
middle of the most beautiful Redwood forest that one could possibly imagine. Many of these huge trees are a couple of
thousand years old and were growing during the time of the Roman Empire and other historical events. Amazing!
It was truly memorable - the entire trip - all in the fun little Pacer coupe. I am looking forward to next year where
rumor has it that we will be visiting the state of Wisconsin for our 51st. E.O.C. convention. While the exact location is
not absolutely certain, I am sure that the team working on this site will find another great area for all of us to enjoy.
My whole-hearted thanks to all of those who worked so hard and made everything so perfect at this wonderful and
eventful 50th E.O.C. anniversary celebration.
I hope to see all of you in Wisconsin next year!
But, for now... enjoy your Edsel, drive safely and we will see you soon!
