and done with respect to the past, tradition, and an eye to the future. Most of the music will be familiar but there will be some changes. What I am most excited about are some of the changes we have added to the Yom Kippur afternoon worship. This part of Mishkan HaNefesh has been our biggest challenge to create smooth liturgy. Cantor Braun described her previous congregation’s afternoon service becoming a healing service. We have worked together and will be adding ritual to the service to both keep much of the tradition that we have come to know with a new emphasis on healing. During the day that is considered the Sabbath of Sabbaths, Yom HaKippurim, we will add to the holiness of the day by creating an atmosphere of renewal of body, mind, and spirit. The other change during the afternoon will be during the Yizkor memorial prayers. Most of the liturgy will remain the same but we have added a new element of candles for remembrance to the service. I am sure these new additions will be spiritually fulfilling for us. Once again, Jan and I want to invite all of you to join us on Rosh Hashanah afternoon for tashlich, the symbolic casting of our sins in the form of bread crumbs, into living waters. After the short ceremony please enjoy the refreshments in our home. Both Jan and I wish all of you and your families a peaceful, healthy and joyous New Year. L’shanah Tovah!

Shalom,Rabbi Alan J. Katz

Anticipating the High Holy Days and the entire scope of holidays in the month of

Tishrei is always part of my summer thinking. In fact, by the time those holidays are upon us, rest assured that months of planning and organization has kept many of us, both lay and professional, quite busy. The numerous hours of work that most of the worshippers don’t see beforehand but experience in a few days make a tremendous difference in how we celebrate this holy season.

One can’t thank the congregational volunteers enough for all they do in preparation and during the holidays. The staff, beyond the religious functionaries also do a yeoman’s job year after year. They too deserve our gratitude. Without them nothing would go smoothly. Finally, working with a clergy team of Rabbi Till, Cantor Braun and our rabbinic intern, including other service functionaries makes us all have a truly spiritual encounter on these Days of Awe. Over the years there have been a few rabbinic changes in our staff but the roles are fairly well set. For the past 20 years it has been our experience to expect what Elise Wojciechowski would bring to us; beautiful music presented gracefully, with an occasional new melody being added. This year will be glorious and different. It has already been a couple of months of planning and working with Cantor Braun that leads me to anticipate wonderful Holy Day services. She has a beautiful voice and the ability to encourage the congregation to join in the singing. Her enthusiasm and creative ideas have me anticipating something very special in our worship. Our discussions have demonstrated her awareness of Temple Sinai’s history and culture. Any changes that have been made have been thoroughly thought out

Contacting The RabbisPlease let the temple office (381-6890) know of any illnesses, deaths or joyous occasions so that the Rabbis and the congregation can respond appropriately. Also, remember not to schedule any life cycle events at which Rabbi Katz or Rabbi Till will be present without speaking to them first.

To reach Rabbi Katz in an emergency, please call both his home phone (872-6722) and his cell phone (662-5418). To reach Rabbi Till in an emergency, please call her cell phone (355-0192).

It is a mitzvah to visit those who are ill. Please remember that HIPAA regulations prevent hospitals from alerting us when someone is ill. We ask temple members who are aware that one of our members is in a hospital to please call the Temple Sinai office so that one of our Rabbis may visit them.

our Clergy and Education Director as part of our High Holy Day team and will have various duties throughout the year. We are looking forward to working with an old friend in these new ways!

As this is my second September in this role, and my successor for next summer is already selected, I realize that the best way I can share of myself this season is to share with all of you my latest challah recipe for Rosh Hashanah. I hope you enjoy it and have a sweet new year ahead!

Blanche’s Challah2 packages instant yeast (or 4 ½ teaspoons)½ cup white sugar1 ¾ cup warm water1/3 cup honey (I love fall flower this time of

year)4 tsp salt¼ cup vegetable oil3 whole large eggs and 3 extra yolks (do not

use extra-large eggs)7 cups bread flour1 egg set aside for glaze

Mix yeast, sugar, water and honey and let sit about five minutes until slight foam forms. Add salt, oil, eggs, and yolks and stir. Add the flour, a few cups at a time, kneading by hand or using a KitchenAid style mixer with dough hook. The dough will be fairly sticky. Do not add extra flour. Turn dough into oiled bowl. Cover and let rise for an hour. Punch down and let rise for another hour. On an oiled cutting board, turn dough out, knead lightly, cut into two parts and form into two loaves. Place on parchment covered cookie sheet, cover, and let rise for another 45 minutes. Brush with beaten egg and bake at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes. Shana Tova!Blanche Fenster

Apple Cake, Honey Cake and taiglach. Challah. After we “Got S’more” Shabbat at the end of August and finished Labor Day weekend with barbeques, it’s time to move on to High Holy Day meal preparation. The gas grill is put aside, and the oven mitts come out.

We settle in to our regular schedule. Children are back to school, adults have closed down cottages and packed up camping gear, Torah Study and Saturday morning Shabbat services resume, and Sundays become a busy day at Temple Sinai, with education opportunities for all and our Judaica Shop open for the season. We prepare our minds for the High Holy Days, seeking teshuvah and forgiveness.

Our Temple Sinai kitchen—new and sparkling— is a wonderful beginning for this New Year. We greatly thank both Friends of Sinai and The Farash Foundation for making it possible.

We have received another incredible opportu-nity this year as well. I am honored and over-joyed to announce that Temple Sinai will be working with a rabbinic intern this year.

As you may know, our very own Jan Katz is currently pursuing Rabbinic Studies at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR). As part of her 4 year-program, she is required to do a Rabbinic Internship. Jan will be completing this requirement at Temple Sinai under Rabbi Till’s direction in accordance with the stip-ulations set out by HUC-JIR. Ordinarily intern-ships are paid, but Jan will be volunteering her time, so there will be no financial cost to Temple Sinai, but tremendous gain! We would like to thank Jan for her incredible generosity in offering us this opportunity. Her skills as a teacher, her rapport with those needing pastoral care, and her extraordinary ruach will be a true gift to our community as a whole. Jan will be working with

The 2018 summer vacation is almost a matter of history. I hope that you and your

children had a great vacation and are ready to begin a new school year.

Students attendance SheetsTo provide our teachers with up-to-date student attendance sheets at the beginning of the year our office kindly asks you to register your children no later than by Sunday, September 2. This year it can all be done online at tsinai.org under the tab for School of Jewish Life & Learning.

“mitzvah market”New this year, and in connection with our teaching that “every day is a mitzvah day,” we will have a “Mitzvah Market” event during the morning hours of the first day of school (Sunday, Sept. 9, 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.). The objective of this event is to provide adults, youth, and children with the opportunity to choose and perform Mitzvot (plural of Mitzvah) throughout the year.

The morning will begin with a complimentary breakfast, followed by visiting the information and sign-up tables of several organizations (i.e., Lollypop Farm, Wild Wings, No One Left Behind, Refugees Helping Refugees, and more) invited to this event.

You will be able to make the decision about how you would like to be involved during the year.

Please sign up online at http://signup.com/go/Gowuqgw or there is a clickable link in the School of Jewish Life and Learning emailed newsletter. Let us know how many members of your family will come to the event and join us for breakfast. That will help us in making sure that we have enough food. We hope to see you and your children at this event.

Youth

The Rabbis have prepared two courses for Sunday morning Adult Ed (9:30 -10:30 a.m.). The first, which will run for 6 weeks beginning on September 30 and is entitled, “Jewish Perspectives on Illness, Death, Mourning & Afterlife." This will be followed by a 12-session course which will address another evocative topic, “Choosing Life – Jewish Medical Ethics.” We hope that you will join us for some or all of these classes. They are designed so that even if you aren’t able to attend every session, you will be able to participate easily. In between the Rabbis’ courses, Cantor Braun will be offering some short musical classes.

We will also be offering Hebrew classes during the 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. time slot on Sundays. We are happy to offer whatever level(s) you need. In order to do this we need you to let us know what level is right for you. Please call the Temple office (381-6890) to tell us which of the following levels you are interested in.

(1) Beginning Hebrew: This class is for those who need to learn (or relearn) how to read Hebrew. Participants in this class will learn the sounds of the Hebrew letters and vowels and how to put these together to read words.

(2) Prayer Book Hebrew: For students who can read Hebrew phonetically (even if you are a little rusty) this class will focus on learning to read and understand the prayers that make up our Shabbat services.

(3) Conversational Hebrew: This is a class that will introduce you to modern Hebrew as it is spoken in Israel today. You should be able to read Hebrew (at least phonetically) in order to benefit most from this class.

Of course, we will be continuing to offer Torah Study on Saturday mornings at 9:15 a.m. All are welcome, whether you have participated in the past or not. Also, it is important to know that this class is conducted entirely in English, you do NOT need to know Hebrew.

Finally, stay tuned for more details, but we will be hosting Dr. Ron Wolfson as our scholar-in-residence this coming spring. Dr. Wolfson has written several books about how to transform a congregation from a transactional one (I pay dues and you give my son a bar mitzvah) to a relational one – one where interpersonal relationships are created, nurtured and valued.

Adult Education

RaTSYHello everyone and happy new school year! We can’t wait to get this year started and we have amazing programs planned. RATSY (Rochester Association of Temple Sinai Youth) is Temple Sinai’s senior youth group for those in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. We provide program-ming throughout the year and your teen’s involve-ment is a great way to have them hang out and get closer to their fellow Jewish teens in a (usually) less formal and (often) more fun-oriented setting. Most events take place at temple or at a nearby location, and there are exciting events through group trips (such as Cleveland, Canada, and even Michigan in the spring!) A commitment to the group is all that is needed (membership this year is free). We look forward to welcoming your teen to the RATSY family.

In addition to monthly events, RATSY is involved in the greater Temple community. We lead teen services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at

the JCC (on September 10 and 19, respectively). We plan and coordinate the annual Purim Carnival. Also, we take part in and sometimes lead congregational services. As we build our Jewish identity, we look for opportunities to build our leadership skills and take our place in our Temple’s Kehillah Kedoshah (holy community).

We begin the year with our first inaugural Pizza Palooza, on Sept. 13th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. We will taste and vote on pizza from local restaurants, determining which deserves our most-sought after “Official RATSY Pizza” endorsement. Afterward, we will network and build our community through feats of strength and mental endurance (games and mixers). Everyone is invited and, again, it’s free (what a value!). We’d love to see your teens there (parent encouragement is always appreciated!) Any questions, please contact Jared Kronenberg, our advisor at [email protected].

Looking forward to a wonderful year!Bahar Undar & Lenny Shapiro Co-Presidents, RATSY

TASHLICH & OPEN HOUSE

Monday, September 10th

Home of Rabbi Alan & Jan Katz

41 Tobey Brook, Pittsford4:00 p.m.

TASHLICH is a traditional ceremony (using breadcrumbs) to symbolically cast one's sins into a body of living water to rid ourselves of

the past year’s wrongs.

Please join us for refreshments after the ceremony.

Tobey Brook is the second right on Tobey Road from Clover. Stay to the right in the

development and it is the 2nd house on the right. There are several spaces for the

swimming pool - great place to park, or in front of the houses on the street is fine as well.

College ConnectionTemple Sinai wants to remain connected with our congregation’s undergraduate college students. Each year students receive two holiday packages at school. It's always fun to receive packages when you are away from home, and we would like to be a part of that experience for your college student!

The College Connection Committee is starting a brand-new list this year, so it is important to contact us even if a student was on last year’s list. Parents of undergraduate college students should email the temple at [email protected] or call the temple office, 381-6890, with the student’s college contact information and email addresses. Please note that we can only send packages to students at colleges within the United States. Postage is costly and an accurate address ensures that your student will receive the packages meant to help them celebrate holidays away from home.

If you would like to be involved with this fun committee, please email Joyce Schachter at [email protected] or call the temple office at 381-6890.

College students are encouraged to keep in touch with our rabbis at any time. They would love to hear from you! Their email addresses are [email protected] and [email protected].

Come join our adult community for music, food,

games and relaxation

A wonderful evening of great food and camaraderie was enjoyed by the Friends of Sinai at the home of Joyce and Charlie Schachter to celebrate 27 years of this group's giving legacy.

Friends of Sinai is another giving opportunity at our synagogue. Most recently, funding from the Friends was directed toward the purchase of new chairs for our events, celebrations and service overflow, and for our much-needed kitchen renovation.

Friends of Sinai is not an annual obligation and it's never too late to join. You can be a Friends for as long as this giving opportunity and its mission appeal to you, or personal finances allow. Consider joining the Friends of Sinai for $360 or more above regular membership dues.

Questions? Call the Temple (381-6890) or contact me at [email protected] or 203-1200.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who were involved in their selection and purchase. The fiber artist who created the Torah covers is Margery Langner, of Custom Judaica.
