LET US REMEMBER

Of all the special days on the Jewish calendar, Tish'ah B'Av – the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av – has become the least well known of all in the Jewish community. Our school children recognize such minor celebrations as Tu BiSh'vat and Lag B'Omer, but memories fail when Tish'ah B'Av is men-tioned. The reason for this ignorance is quite simple - Tish'ah B'Av falls in the summer months, when school is not in session, so, unlike all of the other special days during the year, we do not celebrate it in the classroom. On Tu BiSh'vat our students drink grape juice and get a little plant; near Lag B'Omer we hold special outdoor celebrations; on Tish'ah B'Av the school is closed. About the only children who know about Tish'ah B'Av are those who attend a Jewish summer camp - like Ramah or Young Judea - where Tish'ah B'Av is celebrated. And if our children, who are learning about Judaism, are unaware of Tish'ah B'Av, certainly it is true that many of their parents, whose contact with Tish'ah B'Av may have occurred more than 25 years ago, will have only vague memories of it at best. No, Tish'ah B'Av is not well known in our community in 2014.

Not that Tish'ah B'Av is so full of joyous and wonderful ceremonies that people can't wait for it to arrive – like lighting candles or drowning out Haman or eating pizza in a hut. On the contrary, Tish'ah B'Av is, of course, a fast day, the only other 25 hour fast aside from Yom Kippur on our calendar. And the reason for fasting makes the day even more depressing, for Tish'ah B'Av is a commemoration of all of the disasters that have struck our people throughout the centuries: the destruction of both of our Temples and the loss of Jewish sovereignty in our land, the massacres of our people perpetrated by the Crusaders, our expulsions from England, France, Portugal, and, most devastating of all, from Spain, the pogroms in Rus-sia 110 years ago, and on and on. It is a national day of sadness and mourning, a time for reading the bibli-cal Book of Lamentations by candlelight, for davening quietly, for taking the curtain off the ark, for reciting dirges and elegies for all of the Jews whose lives were disrupted or ended just because they were Jews. Tish'ah B'Av is not a day of joy and gladness - it is not Hanukkah or Purim or Sukkot - and so it is tempting, even for those who know of it, to skip past this Memorial Day for the Jewish people without joining in the commemoration.

And yet Tish'ah B'Av is an important day on our calendar, a day critical enough to our national being that every Jew should recognize its existence in his or her life. While we must avoid the pitfall of teaching all of Jewish history as mainly a string of disasters and death, at the same time it is crucial that we remember – at least one day a year – those of our people whose lives were destroyed simply because they were Jews. Especially we who live in a society which has been so accepting to us - to the point that as-similation threatens our survival, not anti-Semitism - should take the time to contemplate a past so differ-ent from our present and to pay homage to our ancestors and the legacy of Judaism they considered so important that they were willing to have their lives disrupted completely for it.

Tish'ah B'Av falls this year on Monday evening, August 4. Special services, including the reading of the Book of Lamentations, will start at 7:45 p.m. that evening, resume Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. and move on to special afternoon services at 1:30 p.m. I urge all of you to join in memorializing our an-cestors and remembering our past on that evening or the next day. And if you are out of town for a sum-mer vacation, call the nearest synagogue to find out what time their Tish'ah B'Av services will be held.

Tish'ah B'Av should not be the least known day on our calendar; our existence as a people de-mands that we remember our past.

Cantor’s Corner WANDERING JEWS

Summer is a time when many of us go on vacation trips. In the

“olden” days before digital cameras, internet and Facebook, we

might have converted our vacation photos into slides and invited

our friends over to see how we spent our summer vacation.

We’d flip quickly through the slide carousel, stopping occasion-

ally to elaborate on what was happening in a particular slide.

Parashat Mas’ei, the final Parashah of the Book of Numbers,

which will be read on July 26, presents just such a slideshow.

The first 49 verses of the Parashah could easily be subtitled,

“How We Spent Our 40 Years in the Wilderness.” The word

mas’ei, translated in the Etz Hayim Commentary as “marches of”

the Israelites, is understood more commonly as “travels.”

Moses and Aaron have traveled as far as they are going to go; in

fact, Aaron will die in this Parashah. But Moses needs to re-

count the history of their journeys from Egypt to their current

position, on the Plains of Moab, across from Jericho, to remind

the people how God has taken care of them, before he, too,

must die and leave Joshua to lead into the Promised Land.

There are a few verses with details such as “…they camped in

R’fidim, where there was no water to drink” (Num 33:14), but

most are short verses just telling which place the Israelites left

and where they camped next. Therefore, it is a custom in the

Ashkenazic tradition to chant pairs of these short verses in the

special tune that we use for the Song of the Sea and for the

phrase “Hazak, hazak v’nit’hazek,” chanted at the conclusion of

each book of the Torah. Come to Temple Sinai on Shabbat

morning July 26 and you will hear me chant this section with

the special tune.

Speaking of wandering, I will be wandering down to Atlantic

City on August 10-11 for the Midsummer Retreat of the

Cantors Assembly Delaware Valley and New Jersey Re-

gions. We always present a concert on the Sunday night of the

Retreat. This year, our concert is called Our Favorite

“Sings.” Should you be down in the AC area on August 10,

you’ll enjoy a spirited program, which will include my rendition

of “Abi Gezint,” the same song I performed on the Mr. Phil

Show. Look for our concert flyer in the bulletin and posted at

Temple Sinai.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Honoring the lives of those dearly

beloved who were lost, is at the

heart of our mission. Occupying

eight of the 16 acres at the World

Trade Center, the 9-11 Memorial

Museum is a tribute to the past

and a place of hope for the future.

From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million

immigrants entered the United States

through the portal of Ellis Island, a small

island in New York Harbor. Ellis Island

is located in the upper bay just off the

New Jersey coast, within the shadow of

the Statue of Liberty. Through the years,

this gateway to the new world was enlarged

from its original 3.3 acres to 27.5 acres

mostly by landfill obtained from ship ballast

and possibly excess earth from the

construction of the New York City subway.
