‘Welcome to

Cantor Renata Braun

As our Temple narrative continues, we are delighted to soon be welcoming Cantor Renata Braun (and her family) to Temple Sinai. Born and raised in a small town near Kiev, in the Ukraine, classically trained as a musician, Cantor Braun is amazingly versatile in both classical and contemporary music and brings with her a wide range of musical skills and areas of expertise. She has a deep love and excitement about Judaism along with a warm sensitivity to the various congregational needs regarding music – new and traditional, known and unknown. We look very forward to welcoming her.

There were many who were involved in the Cantor Search process spending countless, careful hours to ensure the right musical and cultural-fit for Temple Sinai, and who deserve the most heartfelt of thanks. As I am finishing my second year, I see evermore clearly what a kind, active, thoughtful and thought-provoking place Temple Sinai is and Heschel need not remind me, not to take that for granted. Thank you for all that you do.

This summer at Temple Sinai brings endings and beginnings. As our long winter (finally!) faded into summer, we are reminded of the significance of noticing and appreciating what has been -- alongside what is. This significant change in leadership brings change in opportunity, and encourages us to “get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. For to be spiritual is to be amazed.” I am confident that our Temple life of radical amazement will continue!

With my every best wish,Rabbi Debbi Till

"Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. To get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. For to be spiritual is to be amazed” wrote Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.

Our lives are shaped by a series of stories, each with its own narrative; at times funny, poignant and joyful – while at other times, mundane, challenging and painful. We start school and complete it. We find and build new relationships and let go of others. We leave home and then create one of our own. We end one section of our life’s work and begin another. Beginnings and endings can be bittersweet as we hold them together and in keen awareness of one another. Through this awareness we safeguard against taking things for granted and instead aspire to live our best lives in ways that are purposeful and spiritual.

For nearly two decades we have had the honor and privilege to be led and inspired in prayer by Elise Wojciechowski. At the end of this month she will turn the page, and so too will we on our Temple Sinai narrative. She will be deeply missed and admired for who she is along with what she has encouraged and created. Through the gift of her music, she has opened our hearts, broadening and deepening our possibility for wonder and reminding us of the expansive range of the spirit. We will look so very forward to welcoming her (back!) as a congregant.

Contacting The RabbisPlease let the temple office (381-6890) know of any illnesses, deaths or joyous occasions so that the Rabbis and the congregation can respond appropriately. Also, remember not to schedule any life cycle events at which Rabbi Katz or Rabbi Till will be present without speaking to them first.

To reach Rabbi Katz in an emergency, please call both his home phone (872-6722) and his cell phone (662-5418). To reach Rabbi Till in an emergency, please call her cell phone (355-0192).

It is a mitzvah to visit those who are ill. Please remember that HIPAA regulations prevent hospitals from alerting us when someone is ill. We ask temple members who are aware that one of our members is in a hospital to please call the Temple Sinai office so that one of our Rabbis may visit them.

scholarships for our religious school and for teens to travel to Israel, and we would be limited in our programming and staffing.

At the meeting, we will also vote in our new Executive Officers and our new members to the Board of Trustees. I want to express my extreme gratitude to our Board members and officers that are completing their terms at the end of this month. Athena Thomas-Visel, Eric Rozen, Steven Grodensky, Deborah Farber, Victor Poleshuck and Anne Ghory-Goodman have all been absolutely wonderful to work with, and have helped make Temple Sinai function smoothly, each in their own way. I have appreciated their wisdom, their opinions, and all of the work that they have put into building our community at Temple. We wish both Deborah and Anne well in their new endeavors, as both are moving out of Rochester this spring, and we hope to see them again for visits in the future.

At the Annual Meeting, we will also have the opportunity to meet Cantor Renata Braun and her family. Cantor Braun will be moving to her new home in Pittsford in June and will begin work at Temple Sinai on July 1st. We look forward to getting a chance to greet her, her husband David, and their children on June 21st before her job officially begins. Stay tuned for many more “meet and greets” over the summer and early fall.

So, come visit with them and the rest of the Temple Sinai family on June 21st over dessert and coffee. Be a part of this wonderful collective that you help make. Come to say “Hineini”—Here I am. We will be looking for you!

Blanche Fenster

We began the month of May with a fabulous, newly formatted Mitzvah Day. There were new projects, many congregants involved, and a wonderful luncheon afterwards where we could all come together and share our day of caring. We saw the last classes for the year of our School of Lifelong Learning on Mother’s Day and sent our confirmands off on their trip to New York City on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. As we prepare for our first “Get S’more Shabbat” of the season on June 1st, and enjoy the beginning of warmer weather in Rochester, we are also preparing for our Temple Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 21st.

The Annual Meeting is an important part of our duty to you, our congregants. Our Temple is a collective—a cooperative enterprise. Each household’s vote tells us that we are meeting the needs of all - from the youngest sprout to the most seasoned member. The Annual Meeting is an opportunity to hear from some of our lay and professional leadership about what has happened over the past year, what we can look forward to in the coming year, and to hear about some of the fabulous programs and events that our congregants have planned, facilitated and attended.

We will also be presenting our annual budget for vote that evening, and we are blessed to be able to present a balanced budget with an actual increase in program dollars for some of our newer and more popular programs. The generosity of our members who pay enhanced membership commitments, who contribute to our funds and High Holy Day and Gala fundraising, and who participate in “Friends of Sinai” help us make Temple Sinai accessible for all members, whatever their financial resources. We also must thank the Farash Foundation, which has supported our operations and education funds generously. Without Farash, we would not be able to continue to provide

On Sunday, May 13, we gathered in our Sanctuary for the end of the year assembly; and to say farewell to our 7th grade students who are “advancing” to Kesher.

And on Saturday, May 19, our 10th grade students were confirmed during the Erev Shavuot service.

We thank our 10th grade parents for sponsoring and organizing the oneg that followed the service.

The month of May ended with the 10th grade confirmation trip to NYC.

The School of Jewish Life & Learning school year is over. The classrooms are quiet from the lovely and busy sound of our students. The teachers are “rolling up their sleeves” for the task of cleaning and organizing their classrooms. And in the office, we begin getting ready for the 2018-19 school year . . .!!

During the 2017-18 school year we provided Jewish education and experiences to 174 students; our teachers were assisted by 36 Madrichim and Madrichot; and we began to establish a new partnership with Avnei Chen school from Modiin, Israel.

Thank you:To Barb Snyderman who, after many years of being in various leadership roles with our school, is “retiring” to assume a new VP position: Youth Initiatives. We wish Barb the best in her new position. It happened in MayOn Friday, May 4, our 5th grade class led the Erev Shabbat Family Service. We thank Mrs. Bobbi Sarnov and her Madrichim/Madrichot for preparing the students.

On Saturday, May 5, our 4th grade students led a Shabbat afternoon service that was followed by dinner.

We thank Lindsey Hagan and her Madrichim for preparing their students.

On Sunday, May 6, about 200 adults and children participated in our annual Mitzvah Day; and about 150 gathered in our Social Hall for a post-Mitzvah Day lunch.

On Saturday, May 12, our 3rd grade students and their families gathered in our Sanctuary for a special service and ceremony: Siyum Shlav Aleph, the conclusion of the first step in the students’ reading of Hebrew text; and the beginning of learning Jewish prayer from the siddur (prayer book). At the end of the service the students received a special gift from their

Would you like to help to shapethe next generation of Jews?

We're looking for a few passionate individuals or couples who would like to work with the enthusiastic members of our vibrant youth groups; the junior youth group, SAWCY (Super Awesome Way Cool Youth) and the senior youth group, RATSY (Rochester Association of Temple Sinai Youth). These are two separate positions which will begin in September 2018. The advisors will work in partnership with the Associate Rabbi.

Meet Cantor BraunCantor Renata Braun was born and raised in the Ukraine and began her music studies at the age of four, ultimately receiving a master’s degree in choral conducting from Donetzk State Conservatory in the Ukraine.

In 1999, six years after immigrating to the United States, Cantor Braun received a master’s degree in sacred music and was invested as a Cantor from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. In 1999, she was selected as the only United States representative of synagogue music at The Annual Festival of Jewish Culture in Berlin, Germany, where she coordinated and performed a “solo” concert of Eastern European and American cantorial music. Cantor Braun brings diverse passions and a wide range of musical styles to her Cantorate. She enjoys playing her guitar in a small setting where the children and adults are participating with her, as well as singing an uplifting and inspirational cantorial composition in a large congregation.

In her past positions, Cantor Braun has directed adult choirs, youth choirs and temple intergenerational bands. She has welcomed talented singers and musicians in the congregation to sing and play with her during Shabbat and High Holy Days services, helping them find their Jewish voice.

One of Cantor Braun’s passions is her love for children. Cantor Braun has a strong desire to inspire b'nei mitzvah students and to keep them engaged and involved in the Jewish life of the congregation and the entire Jewish community.

Cantor Braun is married to Dr. David Braun. They are blessed with two wonderful sons, Daniel and Jonathan. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, doing yoga, Zumba and traveling.

Cantor Braun is thrilled to become the first Cantor of Temple Sinai in Rochester! She is looking forward to meeting each and every one of you and joining a great group of professionals and lay leaders. She is delighted to form new connections with adults and children and inspire her new congregants with song.

High Holy Days Torah & Haftarah ReadersWhile it is only June, the High Holy Days will be here before we know it. The summer is a perfect time to learn to chant Torah or Haftarah portions for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If you would like to participate in this important part of the service, please contact Rabbi Katz (main service) or Rabbi Till (family service) as soon as possible. By participating, adults and teenagers can add a meaningful experience to their own and their family’s High Holy Day worship. Now is a great time to do this, especially if you have never done it before.EVEN IF YOU HAVE DONE THIS IN PREVIOUS YEARS OR HAVE ALREADY SPOKEN WITH RABBI KATZ or RABBI TILL IN PERSON, PLEASE CONTACT THEM AGAIN TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE.

12 Temple Sinai's New High Holy Day Torah CoversThe Religious Practices Committee has approved the replacement of two of our High Holy Days Torah Covers. After consideration of different styles, colors and fabrics, the Committee has selected the two designs seen below. They most closely represent the style of our other High Holy Days Torah covers.

The designer, Margery Langner of Custom Judaica, suggested that we might also purchase liners for the insides of the covers. Names can be printed on these liners providing congregants and friends with an opportunity to honor or remember friends and family. The Religious Practices Committee wholeheartedly agrees!!

It is with great pride and enthusiasm that for a donation of $100 per line - the name(s) you designate will be printed on the liner of a new High Holy Day Torah cover. One scroll will be designated specifically for names of congregants themselves or for those they wish to include “In Honor of ….” and the other scroll will be for names designated “In Memory of….”

Here are some examples of how you might submit names. If you want your own name included on the Torah liner please choose the “In honor of…” Torah liner.

Harry and Frances SnyderThe Snyder FamilySarah MeyersSuzanne Smith and Charles Jones

However, since each cover and liner is custom made, time is of the essence and all requests and donations must be complete before June 25th. This is a very hard deadline. At no date in the future will we be able to add names.

Please send your donation ($100 per line – see above) with the name(s) requested to the office. Specify which High Holy Days Torah Cover it is for –that is, be sure to tell us whether the name is to be included on the “In honor of” Torah liner or on the “In Memory of “Torah liner. Funds not used to cover the cost of the new Torah Covers and liners will be donated to the Torah Restoration fund.

GET S’MORE SHABBAT! & WE COULD NOT BE PROUDER Service

Friday, June 8 at 6:00 p.m.

This is the first of two Get S'More Shabbat services planned for summer. Come worship, eat and schmooze outside with your temple family. Those who have previously attended know what a great evening it is, and those who have not won't want to miss out on the experience. Join us on the temple lawn to welcome Shabbat with a lively, camp-style musical service, followed by dinner and s'mores.

Bring your own picnic dinner and relax with new and old friends. Drinks and s'mores will be provided. There will be tables set up, or you can bring your own lawn chairs and blankets. All ages are welcome.

Know someone looking for a synagogue?... bring them along! Get S’more Shabbat is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our vibrant and welcoming community.

RSVP by email at [email protected] or call the temple office at 381-6890. There is no charge for this event.
