YTikkun Olam

is in the Air

What do Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday, Tu B’Shevat, and P.I.C.O. all have in common? First, they’re all “hap-pening” this month. And, second, they are all reminders of the Jew-ish obligation to be engaged in tikkun olam—repairing the world.

MLK Jr. Birthday

On January 16-17, we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In his fi ght for civil rights and social justice, Dr. King often quoted from the Hebrew Bible and the U. S. Constitution to chal-lenge us and to inspire us to do the right thing by our fellow human beings. He often reminded us of the inherent dignity, equality, and uniqueness of every human being. Jewish tradition teaches this (see Mishna, Sanhedrin 4:5) and also that every human being is made b’tzelem Elohim—in the image of G-d. Dr. King often quoted Amos5:24, “Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Tu B’Shevat

In many ways Tu B’Shevat—the New Year of the Trees—has become the Jewish Earth Day.

We plant trees in Israel and our own gardens, we focus on the care we owe the planet (remem-ber G-d gave humankind the responsibility of stewardship over the planet). But the origin

of Tu B’ Shevat is one of tikkun olam: the Bible mandated a tithe (10% donation) of the product of the fruit trees in Israel so that our abundance would be shared with the poor. Tu B’shevat was also the time of the year when G-d judged the people’s behavior and determined if the next year’s yield would be abundant or not.

Today, many of us celebrate Tu B’Shevat with a special seder(ours is Friday, Jan.21), a custom brought to us from the Kabbalists of Safed. During the seder we drink four glasses of wine and eat a va-riety of fruit and nuts (those with inedible shells/skins, those with in-edible centers—pits, seeds—and those that are totally edible inside and out). For the Kabbalists, the eating of these fruits and nuts, (if done with the proper kavanahor intention) would improve the Divine fl ow of goodness and bless-ing in the world and literally con-tribute to tikkun olam—the repair of the world.

Fundamentally, Tu B’Shevatis a holiday about creation and renewal—and our part in protect-

ing and maintaining that creation and renewal. It is about the seeds we plant—the seeds of trees and the seeds of justice.

PICO/ACTIONN

And this brings me to PICO(People Improving Community through Organizing) which is com-ing to Northern Nevada. The name of our local chapter is ACTIONN: Acting in Community Together In Organizing Northern Nevada.

PICO’s philosophy and ap-proach to social action and pursu-ing social justice is through grass roots organization, education, strategy, and action. The focus is on building relationships and iden-tifying mutual concerns.

ACTIONN is now ready to re-cruit volunteers to participate in a Leadership Training Session. We (Temple Sinai) need to send fi ve people from our congregation to participate in a 4-6 hour train-ing session that will take place on March 12, 2011 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (UUF) in Reno. If interested, please con-tact me ASAP.

I hope that the secular New Year, and all its happenings, will be a time to commit ourselves—in a variety of capacities—to tikkun olam. Our communities need much repair.

ISThe Year Ahead

for Temple Sinai

We Jews have two new years’ cel-ebrations: our

religious new year of Rosh HaShanah in September, and, of course, the secular new year. During our Jewish New Year, our thoughts and actions are con-cerned with repentance, prayer, our personal relationships, Jewish tradition and fasting. During the secular new year, we're concerned with parties, sales, losing weight and taxes. This more indulgent secular new year seems at odds with the meaning of the High Holy Days. It's probably good we have both.

Although Temple Sinai's fi scal year ends June 30th, January 1 is really the season when the Board takes stock of how the year is go-ing, with particular attention to our fi nances. The year is half over, and if we need to make adjustments, now's the time. As I reported a couple months back, we've retired all our debt thanks to so many of you, but now we are faced with a serious operating defi cit that is growing with each month. At the end of November, the defi cit was already about $14,700.

What’s the problem? Only 28% of families are current on their dues – 28%! Our membership fami-lies are $28,000 behind on dues already this year.

A couple of months back, you received a letter from me that brought attention to this issue, so I could focus on using this space

for other purposes, like discussing activities. I’d like to talk about the wonderful service we had in December to celebrate Ethel Jaff e’s 95th birthday. I’d liketo talk about the lovely Shabbat/Chanukah ser-

vice we had, or the Youth Group dinner, but I can’t.

This decline in our dues is too serious a situation to leave for an-other time. At its upcoming meet-ing the Board will be deciding on further cuts in services, possibly including all printed copies of the Sentinel and in facility cleaning to name a couple. We don't have much fat to trim here at Sinai. Most of our expenses are for keeping the lights on and for the salaries of our Rabbi and Offi ce Administrator.

For those of you who are part of that 72% of our families who are not current on your dues, I ask that you do what you can, and do it soon. The well-being of Temple Sinai, as you know it, is at stake. As you begin this secular new year, take stock of your priorities and consider how important Temple Sinai is to you – the regular weekly services, a full-time Rabbi, the religious school and pre-school activities, the Men’s Club and Sis-terhood, the Youth Group, Talmud Study and other adult education, Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation and so on. This wonderful congre-gation is close to celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012. Let’s all do what we can now to ensure we can really celebrate.

Shalom,Jake

Youth Group News

A s a new year approaches, it is time for some new and exciting activities. The beginning of December the youth

group had its fi rst event by eating a wonderful Chanukah dinner together. Everyone got ac-quainted as well as brainstormed for upcoming events. Some of the things to come include an Israel night, a benefi t concert, roller skating and a dance marathon. We will also be doing some fund-raisers including bake sales and chip bag jewelry in which we will not only raise money for our group but collectively decide which lo-cal organizations we will donate and spend time volunteering with.

My assistant director, Heather, has a lot of experience working with many of the charities and organizations in the area and I look forward to getting involved with these groups. Overall, it looks like a very promising year ahead of us and I am excited to get started!

Religious School News

Du r i n g these last few months, Religious

School activities have been exciting and students have been busy. Classes learned about Noah and the Ark, being a Tzedek, celebrating Shabbat and Chanukah and much more! We have also had fi ve B’nei Mitzvah since the begin-ning of the 2010 Religious School year.

The Chanukah Celebration turned out wonderfully, with both family and friends attending. Loads of yummy latkes, a cupcake walk, arts and crafts activities, including making necklaces with Hebrew letters, decorating dreidels with scratch-off s, and playing dreidel games made for a fun time.

I hope everyone had a fantastic Winter Break! See you on January 2.

When we return, watch for news about the upcoming fund-

raiser from See’s Candies, bake sales and more. Fund-raisers help with money for supplies, books, paper, arts and crafts material,

our prizes at the Purim Carnival, and more. If you have an idea for a fund-raiser, or would like to off er your help, feel free to contact Tracy at 972-1396(H), or

Meet The Teachers: Spouses Sharrone and Jeff Blanck

SHARRONE BLANCKMy name is Sharrone Blanck.

This year, I teach 5th graders. Previously, I taught 3rd and 4th graders and preschoolers. I also served as Religious School Director for several years. Jeff (see below) and I have two sons at the Religious School, Noah, age 11, and Max, age 10. For about four years, I have worked at Nevada Early Intervention Services (NEIS) where I’m privileged to work with families who have special needs

children who are under three years old. NEIS is a home-based service provided by the state at no cost to families. I love my job, and I love teaching. Stop by anytime to see what we are doing in class.

JEFFREY S. BLANCKJeff and his family, including

Sharrone, Noah and Max (see above) have been members of Temple Sinai for nine years. Jeff previously served as president of the Temple Board of Trustees for two years. Jeff co-teaches the 6/7th graders with Nurit (see last month’s Sentinel). Jeff also co-teaches Hebrew with Rabbi Appleby. He has studied at the World Union of Jewish Students Institute in Arad, Israel, for six months where he learned Hebrew. He is also fl u-ent in Russian. Jeff , is an attorney in private practice in Reno where he focuses on education matters, Civil Rights and employment. He is a life member of the NAACP and chair of the local chapter’s Legal Redress Committee.

Torah for Tots

The Chanukah celebration at Torah for Tots was a big success! Twelve chil-

dren attended, and they all made marshmallow menorahs. Yummy latkes with sour cream and applesauce and Chanukah cookies were the special holi-day treats.

The January Torah for Tots class on Thursday, the 20th

at 4pm and will celebrate Tu B’Shevat – the “Birthday of Trees.” During the year, the children and their families put

money into the blue Jewish National Fund (JNF) box and trees were purchased in Israel for the Children’s Forest. The certifi cates will be presented during this class.

Torah for Tots is Sinai’s program for children ages 2-5. There is no charge for the class and siblings are always welcome. Temple member-ship is not required. To join the class, or for further informa-tion, contact Judy Schumer at [email protected].

O n December 12, our own Jonathan Leo, an attorney and Environmental Law Consultant spoke about his in-volvement with the Arava Institute in southern Israel

and about environmental awareness and programs there. In January, the Honorable Barbara Vucanovich will be talk-

ing about her career and give us a view of the Congress over the past 30 years. She and Harry Reid were both elected to rep-resent Nevada the same year, so her insight will be especially interesting and timely. Although they are from diff erent ends of the political spectrum, they were able to work cooperatively for the good of Nevada and our country. What was so diff erent back then? How and why have things changed? Come and learn from an expert.

Remember breakfast starts at 9am and is served until around 10. At 9:45am we usually have a very short meeting and our speaker talks from 10 until 11am. Breakfast is $15.00; Coff ee or Speaker only $5.00. RSVP to [email protected].
