Jasmine Nixon, Young Farming Champion in the Beef section, as part of the Archibull program, spoke to the students on assembly. She spoke about the need to be aware of where your food comes from, and that the agricultural industry is so much more than farming. She was a very positive and interesting speaker, Jasmine looked at what our students had done with their cow, especially the concept of the snakes and ladders. The calves are returning from Caragabal and Grenfell Public School, all to be judged here next Tuesday. There is a lot of activity, completing the last minute touches. Year 6 orientation starts next week with the first full day. Parents are invited to join the students in their initial assembly, tour of the school and morning tea. The students start their first day at 8.50am. They will be meeting their mentors, learning lots about secondary school and getting to know each other. Teaching staff started the term with a big day on Tuesday. They worked through an extra half day, completing a range of professional learning activities. A lot of the learning was focused around evaluations of the programs and assessments aligned to the new syllabuses, the integration of new applications into the learning programs and development of teaching resources. Staff were pleased with what was achieved. Grandparents, we hope you have your invitation to our celebration that recognises all that you do in supporting our students. We look forward to seeing you all Wednesday 21 October. Margaret Carey Principal

Welcome back to school for another term of learning and engagement.

Year 12 were farewelled from school at the end of last term. It was a real school community celebration. Thursday’s assembly saw Year 12 gathered before the whole school for the last time. Finlay Johnson joined by Melissa Causer, through a taped broadcast, spoke of their memories as a group and acknowledged their year advisers Mrs Taylor and Mr Rodney. Representatives from all the other years farewelled Year 12 with very heartfelt and amusing stories. A large group were acknowledged by Mr McKnight for their contribution to the band, choir and technical crew over the past six years.

The Friday night dinner was a wonderful occasion. The hall was magnificently decorated with a huge rainbow ceiling that arose from a pot of gold fed by a running stream surrounded by a gold mining camp, with real miners going about their business; another Mr Hunter creation. A large group of parents and students provided a beautiful meal and table service. It was a real school community send-off that recognised this rite of passage for Year 12 as they leave school. A big thanks to the P&C committee who coordinated the catering, to the teachers who assisted in many ways and to the students who enthusiastically contributed their time and effort to make this a special school event.

The written Higher School Certificate exams start next Monday. We wish all our students the very best in putting into practice all they have learnt. This year there are some Year 10 and 11 students completing an exam in subjects they have been studying either at TAFE or school.

As one group of Year 12 students leave, the next group moves in. Year 11 have come back to school as Year 12, commencing their HSC courses. The students had an information session about the HSC and all its rules, about assessment and about being the senior students of our school community. They are all a bit stunned and excited about the next 12 months.

Francesca Fenton and Melissa Causer spent the last three days of term rehearsing and then performing at the Sydney Dance Festival. Our local audience members said the performance was awesome, and that both our dancers were fantastic.

More good news: Vanessa Knight has been invited to audition for the Encore HSC performance concert to be held at the Opera House next year. This is more recognition of Vanessa’s performance skills; an exciting opportunity.

During the holidays, Jessica Pereira took part in the YMCA Youth Parliament. This is the third time that our students have been involved. Reports say it was lots of fun and provided opportunities to discuss ideas within the framework of a political debate.

Wanted - Apprentice

Refrigeration Mechanic

If you are interested in such an apprenticeship, UMECH in Sydney are looking for someone to commence in 2016. Their last apprentice was former student Sam Myers (and look at where he is now – playing Rugby sevens for Australia)!

UMECH are very keen to employ another THLHS student.

For further information, contact Lachlan

Irwin on 0422250078 or Ms McCulloch.

The P&C welcomes everyone back to term 4 and hope you all had an enjoyable holi-day.

This term the P&C is gearing down for 2015 and planning for 2016 with some ex-citing and wonderful events and projects in the pipeline.

But before 2015 ends and have a few exciting things to announce and whet the ap-petite for next year.

Over the holiday period the P&C launched our Facebook page which is another form of engaging and informing the community about our events and activities. If you

haven’t already seen the page why not jump on and have a look at it https://www.facebook.com/The-Henry-Lawson-High-School-P-C-823271614456770/timeline/?ref=bookmarks

At our last meeting before the holidays we gave the school an undertaking and invested in a fixed term deposit of $45,000 for a capital works project which we are hoping to undertake in 2016. We will keep you informed as to the status of this project.

And lastly, but not the least important, the last night of term 3 saw the P&C and volunteers cater for what was a very successful and memorable farewell dinner for our Year 12 students of 2015.

The P&C and Year 12 farewell organising committee would like to say a big thank you to the following people for their assistance on the night and also during the day: Jen Bell, Kath Holz, Keryl McCann, Helen Carpenter, Sonja Cotter, Juanita Meier, Nic Mitton, Rodney Cotter, Rob Taylor, Mandy Taylor, Scott Baker, Dean Reid, Andrew Bucknell, Michael Best, Loy Best, Henry Best, Grace Best, Carolyn Baker, Robyn Gaffey, Jillian Reidy, Danny Joyce, Monica Joyce, Megan Starr, Joalee Knight and Verconica Hazell. With a special thanks to the students and Mr Ross Hunter and Ms Megan Crossley for all your hard work; the food was amazing and the hall looked fantastic. If we have missed anyone please accept our apologies and know that your time was appreciated.

On Tuesday night the P&C held our monthly meeting, and we accepted the resignation of Mrs Virgina Osbourne as Vice President of the P&C and would like to acknowledge and thank Virginia for all the time and assistance she has given the P&C as Vice President and wish her a speedy recovery. Virgina resigned from the position of Vice President but remains an active and supporting member of the P&C Association.
