Our special guest, Mr Keith I’Anson, along with wife, also an ex-student, Andrea Griffiths, enjoyed the experience of coming back to school, and being part of the induction. After leading the pledge and handing each captain and SRC representative their badge of office, Mr I’Anson addressed the assembly telling stories of travelling by train to school from Greenethorpe, and being able to avoid after school detention by having to be on the train home by 3.00pm. Recognising the many changes in schooling since 1941, Mr I’Anson spoke about the qualities of leadership, reinforcing the importance of listening, supporting and mentoring those you lead. Melissa Causer, on behalf of the 2015 captains spoke of what they had gained from the experience, in this their last formal assembly. Clare Hunt and Ryan Baldwin graciously acknowledged their predecessors, anticipating the next 12 months in leading the school. We are very proud of their achievement – for the 6 th year in a row in the state finals. Our new student leadership team were inducted last Wednesday. The Science and Engineering team returned from their state final event with lots of stories and a sixth in the state. Information for students and parents/guardians

The LOVE BiTES program will be presented to Year 10 students at school on Thursday 3 September. The aim of LOVE BiTES is to educate young people on the nature of healthy relationships, dealing with issues such as sexual assault and family violence. The program, conducted in schools throughout the state, is delivered by professional health workers. LOVE BiTES will be presented in the form of two workshops, followed by another session which will consolidate the information and result in the production of student developed artwork based on the theme of prevention of violence. In the past, students have found the day to be informative, enjoyable and valuable. Students are not required to wear uniform on this day, (keep in mind you will be painting in the afternoon), but must have closed-in shoes. Please bring your own morning tea; a sausage sizzle lunch will be provided at a cost of $2.00 per person. For the purposes of catering, it is advisable to make this payment at the school office as soon as possible.

ATTENTION YEAR 12 An opportunity exists for a country school leaver in a city based refrigeration apprenticeship. For more information, please contact Lachlan Irwin 0422 250 078 or Anthony Myers 0418 664 375 or see Ms McCulloch.

SCIENCE and ENGINEERING STATE SUPER CHALLENGE

This week the 32 Year 9 and 10 students making up the Science and Engineering team travelled to Newcastle University to contest the state finals. It was a great day of competition and our students arrived feeling excited and a bit nervous. First the welcome, then the announcement we were waiting for - which activity would each team be completing ? Very few teams got their choice of activity and our team skills were put to the test throughout the day as each team battled the challenges thrown at them, such as a change in rules, limited building materials, and malfunctions. However, despite persevering and trying new options, the score updates were not very encouraging. We finished the day in 6th position, a bit disappointed but happy that we had done our best against a very competitive field of schools - the level of competition was very evident by the low scores achieved on the day. McCauley Catholic College from Coffs Harbour took out first place. The State Super Challenge was contested by 24 schools over three days of events, and the three NSW schools with the highest overall scores would be successful in qualifying for the national finals.

Kids Teaching Kids

On 6 August, Year 9 and 10 agriculture students participated in Kids Teaching Kids workshops at Parkes. We prepared a

workshop which outlined the impact of drought, how to predict drought and methods for preparing for drought. The class chose this topic as they felt drought has a major influence on farming and they wanted to know more.

Our workshop included a Powerpoint presentation which was split into three sections. Each student presented their own research. We broke the lesson with two activities: the first involved bursting balloons to find a revision question on the

impacts of drought, the second activity involved a farming version of monopoly, which was carefully and cleverly created by Abbey Joyce. This will be displayed in the office.

The students all spoke confidently and were well rehearsed in their roles. Another teacher was so impressed with the students’ research, that he took a copy of their Powerpoint presentation.

Our students participated in a number of workshops which ranged from salinity and water testing, feral animals, dung beetles and bees and water sustainability. The students who attended the Kids Teaching Kids Day were Jade Ward,

Caitleen Sheehan, Grace Kelly, Madison Knight, Abbey Joyce, Tara Anderson, Brooke Brown, Sophie Piper, Sarah LeBrocque, Tuscany Johnson, Georgie Hargrave, Sam Carpenter, Veronica Garrity and Jessica Cooper.

We would like to thank Craig Johnson, Melissa Davey and Helen Carpenter for assisting with travel. Their support was

really appreciated. Overall, it was an enjoyable day and the students learned much about sustainable farming.

The next P&C Meeting will be held next Tuesday 1 September at 7pm in the school library.

The P&C Invites all interested parents and caregivers to attend this meeting.

At the next meeting we will be having a representative from the Bendigo Bank make a presentation to the committee, discussing the Year 12 farewell, the possibility of a Facebook page, adopting a social media policy as per P&C Federation guidelines, the major capital works project under consideration – covering of the basketball courts to the west of the school hall, and the nominal donation to families whose children represent the school at state carnivals.

The Henry Lawson High School P&C Association is open to all parents and caregivers and the current committee would

love to see and hear from any parents interested. There are a wide range of sub committees you can be involved in such

as fundraising, uniform, canteen, Year 12 farewell, grant submissions and the general administrative committee of the

P&C. If 2015 is not the year for you then why not think about becoming involved in 2016. The P&C is about inclusion and

engaging the wider parent body of the school and community in supporting the students and school.

Soccer Gala Day

Next Friday 4 September students from years 7-11 will be participating in a fun day of soccer at Lawson Park. Canowindra High School will be also be attending. The aim of the day is to enjoy playing soccer in a number of different formats with the view to making the day a permanent fixture on our yearly sporting calendar.

We have two year 7 and 8 boys and girls teams and a boys and girls year 9, 10 and 11 team. All students who are attending have received a note, which should have already been returned to the front office. School uniform and appropriate footwear is required to be worn all day at this school event; no casual clothes. Year 7 and 8 teams will be wearing their school polo shirts while the senior teams will be wearing the school representative shirts. All students are to wear blue shorts or plain black shorts. Ideally we would like players to wear the two blue football socks; however I am aware that these are not readily available in town. Therefore players may wear their long black Grenfell soccer, Rugby league or Rugby union socks on the day. For safety reasons student must play in shin pads; the school has shin pads if required. Football boots, with moulded soles, would be the best option to play in if students have them.

Students are to meet at the front of the school at 8.45 off buses and will be walked to the ground with staff and walked back to school at the conclusion of the day’s play. Students in town, or being dropped off by parents at the ground, may do so as long as they let me know before the day. I will be at the ground by 8.30 am.

The Grenfell Soccer Club have kindly offered their hospitality services and will have a canteen running all day with hot food and a barbeque lunch available. It would be great if our players could support them. We would love to have parents and friends cheer us on, so come and enjoy a coffee on the sideline and hopefully some sunny weather and spectacular soccer.

M.Crossley
