26 June, 2015

A group of Year 10 history students lead the celebration of NAIDOC week by running the assembly. They were well prepared with presentations on the significance of the week and Aboriginal people who have made a difference across the whole of the Australian community. Kurtis Meier did a beautiful rendition of Archie Roach’s song Took the Children Away. Tanaya Holz accepted Year 10’s invitation to deliver the speech she made as part of the NAIDOC public specking competition last week. It was excellent – an account of the connection to country. A copy of the speech is included in this week’s newsletter. Well done to Year 10 and Mrs Cartwright – they shone in their work on acknowledging the importance of NAIDOC week to everyone.

Our Year 9 debating team have a mantra “say it with conviction”. This helped them with their final zone debate against Cowra. The team of Paige Hughes, Isabelle Hunter, Sarah Knight and Jessica Pereira had to take on the moral and ethical issue that voluntary euthanasia should be legal, arguing the negative case. That all sacred lands should be returned to the traditional owners.

Delivered by Tanaya Holz as part of THLHS NAIDOC debating team at Cowra

Ladies and gentlemen, fellow students, the traditional owners are the Aboriginal people. Aboriginal means belonging to the land.

For Indigenous Australians, we are the land: the land is us.

Today we were welcomed by the traditional owners.

It is a very special thing to welcome people into your home. In fact, you can only welcome people into your home - you can’t welcome people into other people’s homes.

The topic today is that all sacred lands should be returned to the traditional owners. This is clearly the right thing to do, as the traditional owners are part of the land, and the land is a part of the traditional owners.

This is the very definition of what it means to be Aboriginal, that is: coming from the land on which they live.

Since 1788 European culture has spread across this continent. The existing Indigenous Australian culture was mar-ginalised in the process and sacred lands, those parts of the country that have a special cultural significance, were regarded as the same as any other piece of land.

By returning sacred lands to the traditional owners, a great wrong can be righted.

European settlers no doubt believed they were doing the expected thing by establishing themselves as the dominant culture. Now, two hundred and twenty seven years later, all people of this country have the opportunity to recognise that Indigenous Australian culture has a valid place in our history.

It will require a shift in thinking for many of the mainstream of society to accept that Aboriginal people have a valid connection to this land, especially the sacred lands.

Let us all imagine how great this country can be if we embrace our heritage and value the traditional custodians and

inhabitants of Australia.

WORK EXPERIENCE Year 10 enjoyed a week at work last week. Work experience is a valuable program as for many it’s their first taste of working for people other than their parents. Work experience aims to:

give students a closer look at the working world

allow students to investigate particular jobs

initiate contact between students and employers

allow students to demonstrate their responsibility, skills and adult behaviour.

Many students used their extensive network of family friends, relatives, local businesses and parents’ associates to locate and establish a good work experience position. Students travelled as far away as Sydney, Canberra, Parkes, Forbes, Young, Port Macquarie, Bribbaree, Quandialla, Caragabal, Cowra and of course Grenfell.

The Henry Lawson High School would like to thank these local businesses who supported our students and kindly agreed to take on work experience students in 2015.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

In term 3 Ms Griffiths and Ms Roper will lead a group of students in participating in this

worthwhile project. This will assist our students to become more aware of Australia’s role

within the global community and to realise just how fortunate we are to live in this

wonderful country.

For those unaware of what this project is all about, we will assemble shoeboxes filled with

gifts for children who are living in great need. Many are affected by extreme poverty, war

and natural disasters. This is a world wide project and in past years Australian shoeboxes

have been delivered to Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam and Cambodia.

What goes into a shoebox? School supplies, toys, clothes, hygiene items, something

special. What comes out of a shoebox? Clean water, building of schools and education

needs, healthcare and sustainable livelihood training.

How can you help? First of all we need shoe boxes which we will cover with colourful

Christmas paper. We invite every student to contribute towards a box. Why not pick up a

few supplies whilst shopping these school holidays? Gifts can be for girls or boys in the

following age categories: 2-4 years, 5-9 years, 10-14 years.

If you require additional information please contact Ms Roper or Ms Griffiths.
