Mega Shakes made by Miss Doolan's Year 10 students for their end of year practical assessment.
Huge things from the men’s program this week!
Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing a health crisis, yet it’s rarely talked about. Men are dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent.
The men’s program participants completed 1411 push ups in an effort to raise awareness in themselves! 1428 to be exact but its about the aware-ness of the 1411 men that will be lost between October and December to testicular cancer, prostate cancer and mental health issues in Australia.
Coordinator Mr Hunt is extremely proud of what these boys have achieved.

spring into summerOn Friday, November 8 GHS held the
inaugural “Spring into Summer” community event. The evening saw a couple of touch games in which the staff team emerged victorious.
Student and staff musical performances then followed. It was the first time that we have conducted an event in this format and it was a nice laidback evening with a bit of difference.
The plan for future is to alternate this event every second year with the Fair and to also fit in with the primary school fairs in town.
Thank you to our community members who came and participated in the touch team, as well as to all of the community who came and got involved.

Year 12, 2020 recently participated in study sessions run by ELEVATE. Year Advisor Mrs Dwyer compiled this informa-tion for future reference.
Study SenseiWe address the question: “What is study?” This seminar breaks down the study techniques of the top students, providing students with a road-map for what work they need to be doing across the year and how to do it.
Skills covered:• Working consistently – How to get notes
done during term, instead of just before exams.
• Note taking – How to get the ideas stu-dents have extracted from their readings into an organized set of notes that will facilitate effective learning.
• Conceptual learning skills – Teaching students how to break the information into its relevant parts as opposed to simply rote-learning the material.
• Standing out on assessment – How to distinguish oneself from the thousands of other students being taught the same material.
Time ManagementThis seminar addresses the second most common question: “Once I know what
ELEVATE study sessions
to do, how do I find the time to do it?” Students have busy lives and for most the challenge is simply finding time to get the work done.
Skills covered: • Study routine – How to develop a study
routine that allows for socialising, sport and extra-curricular activities but still ensures productivity.
• Working smart – How to identify the work that is going to get students the
most marks across their final years and how to ensure that it gets done.
• Study groups – Students are shown how to leverage their time across the year by using study groups. This is a particularly powerful academic technique for those students who are time-poor.
• Procrastination – Students are intro-duced to the most common reasons underlying procrastination and how to manage them, if not eliminate them altogether.
In 2020 Stage 4 students (Years 7 and 8) will not be permitted to
bring phones to school
Year 7 and 8 students found with a phone will
have it confiscated and it will need to be collected
from the school by a parent or guardian.

GUNNEDAH HIGH SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Mr Ken White Relieving Principal
STAFFINGAt this time of year things can get a bit hectic with working out our new timetable for 2020 and part of that is working on our staff that will be at the school next year. We have some new staff arriving next year with Ms Laura Phillips starting in Sci-ence, Mr Tom Rhodes in TAS and Ms Katie Scotford in Special Ed. These people are taking up positions that were unfilled by permanent teachers over the year and we look forward to having them here to assist with your child’s learning. I'm also pleased to announce that Ms Ashleigh Hobart has been appointed as Girls Advisor. One sad bit of news is that we will be saying good-bye to Mr Gough who will moving to a new teaching position in Sydney. Mr Gough has been a popular member of staff during his time here and we wish him well.
WORK EXPERIENCEMost of our Year 10 students are cur-rently on work experience. This is a great opportunity for our students to gain an insight into the world of work and the “nitty gritty” of the 9-5 experience. I would like to express my thanks to the many local employers who are helping our students to find out about jobs and the world of work.
UNIFORM SHOPOur uniform shop is in the process of changing hands with Alinta ceasing oper-ations at the school on December 5th, and the school opening up as proprietors of the Uniform shop in January. We are just coordinating the arrival of the new uni-forms with our new suppliers, and hope to be able to start trading around the 23rd or 24th January and being open on the 27th January and 28th January. We will then operate on Tuesday mornings and Thurs-day afternoons just like Alinta does now. We will be notifying on our Facebook page
as well as the Namoi Valley Independent and local radio when we have finalised these opening dates. As I mentioned previously, the current uniform will still be permitted during a 2-year transition period until the start of 2022.
TRANSITIONOn Tuesday, December 3 we will welcome our new Year 7 students for Orientation Da. I know that Miss Doolan and Miss Ludlow have been working hard to make sure that the day will be full with all sorts of activi-ties and ensuring everyone feels welcome,
MOBILE PHONESWe have recently had some unfortunate incidents at the school, and upon inves-tigation, we have found that the cause or a major instigator has been the inappro-priate use of social media via phones. I cannot stress enough the importance of parents/carers talking and working with their children about the appropriate use of phones, and not letting the “Phone control
them” as it were. I would suggest parents/ carers look for support from the office of the “esafety commissioner” https://www.esafety.gov.au for assistance. Please also note that Stage 4 students (years 7 & 8) in 2020 will not be permitted to bring phones to school unless there is a direct, documented medical reason. Year 7 & 8 students found with a phone will have it confiscated and it will need to be collected from the school by a parent or guardian.
PRESENTATION EVENINGPresentation evening is on Thursday, December 12 and I look forward to cel-ebrating the successes of our students this year. Students who will be receiving awards will be notified with an invitation during next week. I also look forward to attending the Girls Academy afternoon tea just prior to our presentation evening where we will celebrating the success of our girls in the Academy.
IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE DATESOur last official day for student attendance this year is Wednesday December 18th and we restart for student attendance on Wednesday January 29th for Years 7, 11, 12, and Thursday 30th January for the whole school. As always, if you need to contact me for any reason my email address is [email protected]
In 2020 Stage 4 students (Years 7 and 8) will not be permitted to bring phones to school.
