March Madness is upon us! Our amazing Reading and Technology Committees have been hard at work with this month’s reading initiative. We look forward to learning all of the different genres of books your child enjoys reading at school and at home. Be on the lookout for a super cute March Madness Reading Challenge flyer!

In connection with our March Madness Reading Challenge, I find it important to express the need for students to be able to blend and automatically read nonsense words (ex.neg, fop), and it is just one of the many pieces in growing a student to be a successful reader. Below is the link to an amazing blog that explains (along with a video) the importance of nonsense words:

I sure hope you have a wonderful month in March! Please never hesitate to reach me via email at [email protected] or at (334) 887-4950 if you have any questions. Thank you!

Reviewing genres has still been our focus for the month. We also enjoyed a successful Spring Book Fair and Wild About Reading Family Night. A big thank you to all of the families who came out and supported these events. In celebration of Read Across America Week, the library will be turned into a Dr. Seuss’ Cafe. Our second graders will be hosting and reading to all of our first grade and kindergarten friends. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” - Dr. Seuss

Notes from Nurse Haley

I hope everyone has been utilizing the myplate.gov placements that went home and having fun learning about making healthy eating choices! We will be incorporating myplate.gov activities in PE and tying in healthy lifestyle choices including fitness.

This month Jump Rope for Heart kicks off March 5, 2020! Jump Rope for Heart is a fundraising and physical activity program based around being physically active. It teaches school aged children how to keep fit and healthy, all while having fun and raising vital funds for heart disease research and education. Happy fundraising!

from or about Africa, Mexica, Korea, Australia, Ireland, and France. We will be singing in seven different languages! 1st grade students are learning jungle-themed songs for our First Grade Showcase in April - ask us about bats and echolocation, snakes molting, and chameleons changing their “hue!” 2nd grade students are wrapping up our units on Mozart and opera, beginning to learn about Beethoven, and reading and composing rhythms with quarter notes, eighth notes, half notes, and sixteenth notes.

SAVE THE DATE! Our Artome artworks (mixed media drawing and painting) are finished and they are fabulous! I am so excited for you to see all of the hard work our students put into these at the school wide art show on the evening of Monday, March 30th. Look for more information to come home with your child as the date of the show approaches!

Kindergarten has been learning about the Japanese holiday of Kodomo No Hi (Children’s Day) and are making Koinobori (carp windsocks) to be displayed during our upcoming Kindergarten showcase night. First grade has been learning all about patterns. They’ve used a variety of patterns on Valentine themed heart pictures with some extra focus on craftsmanship while painting. Second graders learned about American artist Keith Haring’s love of drawing and generosity of spirit before completing a drawing in his style. The process of printmaking is also being introduced to (or reviewed with) second graders in preparation for our next project!
