NCSC Dogs Bark for Kids
BARK (Beach Animals Reading with Kids) Therapy Dogs is a non-profit volun-teer program that provides certified therapy dogs to elementary schools and libraries. Children love to read to the gentle, nonjudgmental dogs.
Sophie listens to kids at Paularino Elementary in Costa Mesa, Obie listened to kids at the OC Pet Expo, and Imp is listening to kids attending the summer day care pro-gram at Morse Elementary School in Pla-centia where more than 65 kids signed up to read to the dogs!
Reading out loud is crucial to the development of competent readers. When reading out loud, kids are encouraged to read each word rather than reading to themselves and skipping the words they don’t know. Many children are intimidated by reading in the classroom because they are shy, have difficulty decoding the text, or may be embarrassed about making mistakes.
We work with children who are behind in their reading skills, lack self-confidence, or have difficult or traumatic home lives. Even autistic and Asperger’s kids can benefit from reading to BARK dogs. Children in a six-week read-

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT...
Hi, Everyone,
The end of the year is fast approaching. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas come bar-reling down on us every year, and we can only wonder where the time went. The NCSC had a water test in October, will have a Draft Test in No-vember, and have our Regional January 6, in Palm Springs. If you are at all interested in things Newf, try to make it to the Regional. Betty McDonnell of Kilyka Newfoundlands will be our conformation judge. As an added bonus, the Mesquite New-foundland Club of Arizona is having a Regional on Thursday, January 5. There will be supported en-tries the Saturday and Sunday after our Regional, too. If you missed out on donating money for one of our Regional Trophies, the Arizona club still needs sponsors for its trophies. Thank you to our many supporters who donated to our trophy fund. Karrie Cook was hard at work collecting donations. Visit the 2012 Regional Specialty site on Facebook, too (search Facebook for: 2012 NCA Newfound-land Regional Specialty). Michelle Alpern posts updates about the Regional. Mark the date — January 6, 2012 — for our Regional.
The election Meeting will be held in Octo-ber in Long Beach. It should be a fun day of dog activities. The notice and contact information should be in this Pawprints. Come and join the fun!
The Newfoundland Club of Southern Cali-fornia has a lot of opportunities for volunteers. Rescue can always use drivers, donations, and fos-ter homes. Our hard working working committee will always welcome enthusiastic newcomers. If you think you might want to get more involved come to one of the events, or suggest an event at a location near you.

ing dog program increased their reading skills by 12-20% in comparison to kids NOT in a reading dog program. http://www.ucdavis.edu/spotlight/0410/reading_to_rover.html.
At Cleveland Elementary, the hearing impaired children sign their words to the dogs and the inter-preter speaks the words. These kids also practice using their voice. You need a firm voice to get the dog to sit, shake, or catch. It’s fun for them to practice speaking when they can get the dog to respond! BARK currently has more than 80 teams listening to children in 40 regular locations (schools and libraries) along with numerous community events such as the OC Pet Expo. BARK also helps college kids at Chapman University and UCI to de-stress during finals. BARK encourages humane education by teaching children how to take care of their pets at home. BARK’s regular program is one day per week for eight weeks in order to build a better bond and rapport with the team and child. BARK assessment forms from teachers show 96 percent of kids increase in self-confidence, 94 percent in class participation, and 90 percent in reading skills. Yes, the dogs love it too! Most teams report their dog gets excited as soon as they get close to their school or library.
Does your dog have what it takes to be a BARK dog? BARK looks for friendly dogs that like children, do not bite or jump, and can settle down. Your dog must be at least one year old and pass a 15-point test similar to the Canine Good Citizen test. The test includes some obedience, testing around groups of people, strangers touching your dog, and walking by food. BARK is not only testing the dog, but also the handler to be sure they are aware of and have control of the dog.
BARK teams participate in the program once every few months, once a month, or once a week; whatever works for the volunteer. BARK provides all supplies and tries to find locations close to where the dog team lives.
BARK has limited funding and is in need of picture books about dogs, small rolling suitcases, blankets, stickers, and small stuffed dogs. Check out the BARK website to see all upcoming events and testing dates: www.readingdogs.org.

Draft Test Volunteers Needed!
Come to the NCSC Fall Draft Test and cheer for the dog and handler teams as they strive to earn a draft dog or team draft dog title! Volunteering at a draft test is the best way to learn about the sport. No experience is necessary, and we will show you everything you need to know. We’ll have plenty of experi-enced handlers on hand to answer any questions you might have.
We are in need of the following:
Stewards – We need many people to help and no experience is necessary. We need people at the obedience ring and at the start of the harnessing and hitching area. If you’d like to take a one mile walk in a beautiful park, WE NEED YOU to walk be-hind a dog and handler team during the freight haul (primarily for safety purposes). We also need two people to act as lead stewards at the front of the freight haul (ability to remember the one mile walk re-quired).
Volunteers to help with carrying, set up, and tear down of items for the obedience ring, maneuvering course, breakfast, lunch, raffle, and Ways and Means items.
Raffle Donations – We will have a raffle the day of the test, and we are in need of your donated items. Stay tuned to your e-mail for the opportunity to purchase tickets for a few specialty items (you need not be present at the draft test to win these items).

Make sure you plan ahead and plan on coming to the NCSC Regional Specialty in Palm Springs on Fri-day, January 6, 2012. The Mesquite Newfoundland Club Regional is the day before, so plan to make that, too, if you can. Our Regional is one of the first Newfoundland Specialties of the year and we always have a great time.
Our judges are Newfoundland breeders, Anna Lorenz (Sweeps) and Betty McDonnell (all other Dog and Bitch Classes). If you want to learn about a Regional, think about volunteering; we can always use an extra hand. Melanie Bigelow is our Raffle Chair. GAELAN MAY 17TH 2003 ~ SEPTEMBER 11TH 2011
Gaelan came to me as a rescue just before Christmas, 2003 at six months of age. I was asked to
foster him, which is the kiss of fate for me as I bond very quickly … and in this case so did Gaelan.
Gaelan had the sweetest demeanor and got along with all dogs and people, wanting to be in the
middle of everything at all times. He did not like water work, but was in his element the times I
took him to the Special Olympics. Gaelan came to me suddenly and left me suddenly. I thank the
wonderful rescue sector of the club for calling me. I was blessed to have him in all his loving gen-
tleness.

Likely a side effect of the economy, the dogs entering our rescue program are in worse
shape than ever before. This, of course, results in higher bills at the veterinarian’s office. Our
fundraising efforts are never-ending (as you’ve surely noticed when Laurie tries to get you to
buy yet another T-shirt!) Rescue is very grateful to all those who give of their money, and also
those who give of their time. One easy and “free” way to help is to shop at Ralphs with the club
card registered to benefit SCNRC, better yet if you get your friends, neighbors and co-workers to
do the same. As the holidays approach, think of the Rescue boutique for gifts; Laurie is always
quite happy to be your personal shopper! And, if you and all of your friends have plenty of T-
shirts and sweatshirts, consider rescue donations for “in honor of” gifts and memorials.

The Duke family made a special donation because they are currently unable to foster a
dog. Carol Snyder coerced several friends, relatives and coworkers into making donations for
rescue. Our illustrious and thoughtful water test committee chose Rescue Gear for their exhibi-
tor and judges’ gifts. Big thanks to the Newfoundland Club of San Diego and hostesses Pam and
Joyce for including SCNRC in their annual FUNdraiser.
We are lucky to have friends who are generous with their time. The Mohr family is fos-
tering Brownie, which has turned Debra into a chauffeur and personal trainer. Brownie has had
LOTS of visits to the vet, and is doing well on her weight loss program. Thank you to Robin
Meares and family for fostering Thor aka Louie, and for the wild freeway crawl from Tujunga to
Irvine!!! Woody Smith is currently fostering not one but three orphan dogs while we search for
their perfect families!
Updates: We are saddened by the recent loss of two or our rescue alumni. Enzo (the
Magnificent) Sletten and Gaelan Piller are dearly missed by their families, the rescue committee,
and by all whose lives they touched. They each had a rough start in life, but ended up in incredi-
bly loving and attentive homes. Our condolences, and thanks, to the Sletten and Piller families.

On a much happier note, Abbey Banda (aka Abbey Normal) is a Canine Good Citizen and TDI therapy dog. Con-
gratulations Mark! Sally Maltby has passed her therapy dog probation with flying colors. We knew you had it
in you, Sal! She is now making a difference with her visits to the County children’s shelter.
We continue to be in need of foster homes. Please contact Karrie if you are interested in learning more.
We do have runs that can be set up in your yard temporarily if this accommodation would allow yours to be-
come a foster home!
Here is the update on current rescues:
Oliver – ADOPTED! This 3 year old male, who appeared to have been the
wrong dog for a very busy family, has been placed with a very experienced
Newfoundland owner (and former adopter through Newfoundland Rescue).
He now resides in Tucson, Arizona and his new owner has loved and trained
six Newfoundlands prior to Oliver. Jennifer has worked with her dogs in ther-
apy work, obedience and water work. We look forward to updates on Oliver
and hearing about all of the wonderful things that we know he’ll accomplish
with Jennifer’s experience, guidance and love.
Auggie – This five year old male is ready for his forever
home with just the right family. Woody has worked
tirelessly with Auggie, and we’re happy to report that it
appears that he’s overcome his issue with going out the
door leading to the backyard. Auggie is a wonderful,
laid back boy and is in need of a home where he can
lounge about during the day. Woody takes him on
about a ¾ mile walk each day which seems to be just
about the right amount for Auggie. Please contact Kar-

Brownie – This gorgeous 5 year-old female was relinquished by her owner whose mother had pur-
chased her for him as a puppy. He told Karrie that she’d
had foxtails removed from her feet recently and that the
sites were not healing because Brownie kept licking
them. We knew that she had lick granulomas from near
constant licking as soon as we saw them. This appears to
be a nervous habit that Brownie has developed which will
be very difficult to break. She has been wearing a soft e-
collar and has had the rear leg bandaged to prevent her
from licking. The front leg is healing well since she can’t
reach it when the e-collar is in place. She doesn’t seem
to mind the collar, and it can be removed when she can
be supervised. She is also on a trial of medication to see
if this might help the behavior.
Brownie is also on a weight-loss plan as men-
tioned above in preparation for her spay procedure. She
will be ready to place after that. She will need to go to a home with a diligent owner that is home
much of the day and will not mind keeping Brownie in an e-collar when unsupervised. Let Karrie
know if you or someone you know might be interested in her.
Louie – This three year-old beautiful male was found
running alongside the road with a rope tied around his
neck. He’d obviously escaped a bad situation and was
found by a Good Samaritan who took him to the local
shelter and notified us. The Good Samaritan was also
there to bail him out as “First Hold,” just in case we
weren’t second on the list. Louie is a bit like Mary
Poppins – “practically perfect in every way!” He’s
handsome, healthy, loves all people, other dogs, cats,
chickens, etc. He is a quick learner and is looking for
someone to provided him with the much need affec-
tion and attention that he was sorely lacking in his pre-
vious home. Thank you for Robin Meares for pulling
Louie from the shelter and to Robin and her family for
providing him with a fantastic foster home until his
forever home can be found.

Penny –
As you’ll remember, this 14
month, 12 pound female was
pulled from a shelter along with
Auggie since we were told by
shelter personnel that they
were very attached to one an-
other. Penny would do well in
a home with other dogs, but
does not need to be placed
with Auggie. She is a very cute
little girl and always looks like
she’s smiling! If you know a
small dog person or if you’ve
always wanted a sweet, little
lap dog that requires very little
grooming and doesn’t drool,
perhaps Penny is the right dog!
Adonis – This approximately 5 year-old male is the perfect
dog for someone wanting a Newfoundland on the bit smaller
side. Adonis weighs in at just over 100 pounds, but fits the
Newfoundland conformation standard in every other way. His
prior owner found him as a stray when he was about two
years old. He lived with her and her four small children until
she could no longer handle him. Fortunately, the reasons she
provided for giving him up (completely wild, jumps on every-
one, other dog aggressive) have not come to pass. We think
he just lived in a chaotic household, and his owner didn’t have
the time or energy to train him. He is currently being fostered
with Auggie and Penny and gets along fine with them. He
does not jump on people. He does need ongoing training, but
Woody has worked diligently in teaching him some basic obe-
dience. He is a fairly active boy and LOVES his daily walks. He
is very curious about his environment and enjoys spending
time both inside and out. He seeks out attention and enjoys
petting and belly rubs. With his small stature, he could likely
participate in agility which is a ton of fun and great exercise
for both the dog and handler. If you’d like to learn more
