Pandemic notwithstanding, our intrepid volunteers

rose to the challenge, masked up (removing masks

only for photo opportunities), and came in every day

to care for TALGV’s animals. Whether they were

bathing cats, exercising dogs, serving dinners, haul-

ing supplies, or cleaning kennels, the volunteers

worked on as usual, with cheerful attitudes and

smiling faces (at least we think they were smiling

under those masks). The cats and dogs were happy,

too—they got extra attention from volunteers who

were glad to be out of the house and eager to

spend time socializing with their furry friends.

Many of you will remember the dynamic duo who were brought to The Animal League shelter in October, 2019. They were malnour-ished, infested with every vermin a dog could have, and totally

afraid of the human race. You named them Scooby and Shaggy. Many volunteers and foster parents worked long and hard and with great patience for more than a year to get these brothers of the desert to accept their alpha humans.

Judy and I met these boys just before Christmas 2020 at their foster mom and trainer’s home. We sat on the floor, played with them, gave treats and took them for a walk. Judy and I looked at each other and nodded our heads—Yes, these were the boys we wanted to bring home. The next day we were at TALGV filling out the paperwork and piling them and their things in our car.

Scooby and Shaggy have been with us for about two months and in that time they have bonded to us and become more trusting. Coming home from the grocery store is a

wildly happy moment. Shaggy loves to be petted and will put his head on our laps when we are sitting on the floor. Scooby does not “love” to be petted but he accepts it, and he does love his walks. When it is time for outdoor exercise, he will carry his leash to you and let you know he is ready.

On our walks, we have met many of the volunteers who helped Scooby and Shaggy during their rehabilitation. We are so grateful for all the work you did with these boys. They are still a work in progress, but then… aren’t we all.

Thanks to our wonderful donors and loyal volunteers, The Animal League of Green Valley

continued to operate during an unprecedented 2020. Here are the year’s highlights:

Sheltered and loved 442 cats and 444 dogs includ-

ing 55 pets brought from Pima Animal Care Center.

Found forever home for 376 cats and 344 dogs—

adopters were taking them out as fast as they

came in.

Reunited 7 cats and 57 dogs with their happy owners.

Raised $229,944 for animal care from The Attic

Thrift Store, even though they were closed for

79 days for the safety of shoppers, volunteers and

our animals.

Continued our Community Outreach Program:

• assisted 576 people in our local area;

• provided wellness checks, medical assistance,

and vaccinations to 145 cats and 543 dogs;

• spayed/neutered 1,137 pets.

Kept costs low with our all-volunteer staff who

worked a total of 100,600 hours, the equivalent of

52 full-time employees.

Did much-needed maintenance on the building and

grounds, including new flooring in the East Wing

and fresh paint in The Attic and dog kennels.
