From the President’s Desk

Incredible how fast a week can fly past. It's wonderful news that we may get that large grant for Sailability, congratulations to Graham and his team of hard working fellows. Well done!!!!!!

Tonight we were to be informed about RYPEN but unfortunately Deli Coleman is unable to give her presentation. A reminder for all board members the next board meeting is on the Tuesday evening 23rd at 206 Fullerton Cove Road.

Last Friday night was my first President's meeting in zone 9670, a very interesting evening to say the least

I note that the DG’s Partner Project is to support End Polio Now, it is reported that the world is 1% away from a polio free world.

Again a reminder that we have Hunter Horses on the 21st August, a District Governors visit on the 24th August, August 28th is the YEP training for host families.

Don't forget Paul will be calling for volunteers later in the year for Science & Engineering Discovery Days. all the assistance he can get will be very much appreciated.

Yours in Rotary.

Geoffrey

From the DG’s Newsletter

Basis for Calculation of RI and District Dues

For several years now, Rotary International has charged its dues on the number of members on record with RI as at the 30th June and 31st December in each year. We have been told that even if a club disagrees with the number of members recorded there will be no adjustment. It is up to the Cub to ensure that their membership number as recorded in the Rotary International data-base is accu-rate.

The District Treasurer has recently sent out invoices for the District Dues payable by each Club. The District Treasurer use the number of members recorded in the RI data-base as the basis on which to charge Clubs for District Dues. Some Clubs have indicated that the figures in the RI data-base are not accurate and have asked that the amount of the District Dues be modified accordingly.

Keep your Club up to-dateI should not have to remind Clubs that it is up to your executive to ensure that the membership number record-ed in the Rotary International data-base is accurate. While I have some sympathy with Clubs whose members resign at the end of the half-year and do not foreshadow their intended resignation beforehand, we who are managing the District’s funds are trying to stick to a budget and any variation in membership numbers, particu-larly downwards so that the income is reduced, causes problems.

We would prefer to retain members rather than lose them. However if members decide they no longer wish to be associated with Rotary, we really ask that they foreshadow their resignation to the Club Executive at least a month before the end of each half year so that the club’s membership as recorded in the RI data-base can be ad-justed in time and the club does not have to pay either RI dues or District Dues for former members.

50 Things Every Rotarian Should Know About Rotary (cont’d)

8 - FOUR AVENUES OF SERVICE

The term "Four Avenues of Service" is frequently used in Rotary literature and information. The "Av-enues" refer to the four elements of the Object of Rotary: Club Service, Vocational Service, Communi-ty Service and International Service. Although the Avenues of Service are not found in any formal part of the constitutional documents of Rotary, the concept has been accepted as a means to describe the primary areas of Rotary activity. • "Club Service" involves all of the activities necessary for Rotarians to perform to make their club function successfully. • "Vocational Service" is a description of the opportunity each Rotarian has to represent the dignity and utility of one's vocation to the other members of the club. • "Community Service" pertains to those activities which Rotarians undertake to improve the quality of life in their community. It frequently involves assistance to youth, the aged, handicapped and oth-ers who look to Rotary as a source of hope for a better life. • The Fourth Avenue, "International Service," describes the many programs and activities which Ro-tarians undertake to advance international understanding, goodwill and peace. International Service projects are designed to meet humanitarian needs of people in many lands. When a Rotarian understands and travels down the "Four Avenues of Service," the Object of Rotary takes on even greater meaning.

9 - INTERNATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF A ROTARIAN

As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique opportunities and responsibilities. Although each Rotarian has first responsibility to uphold the obligations of citizenship of his or her own country, membership in Rotary enables Rotarians to take a somewhat different view of in-ternational affairs. In the early 1950s a Rotary philosophy was adopted to describe how a Rotarian may think on a global basis. Here is what it said:

"A world-minded Rotarian: • looks beyond national patriotism and considers himself as sharing responsibility for the advance-ment of international understanding, goodwill and peace; • resists any tendency to act in terns of national or racial superiority; • seeks and develops common grounds for agreement with peoples of other lands; • defends the rule of law and order to preserve the liberty of the individual so that he may enjoy free-dom of thought, speech and assembly, and freedom from persecution, aggression, want and fear; • supports action directed toward improving standards of living for all peoples, realizing that poverty anywhere endangers prosperity everywhere; • upholds the principles of justice for mankind; • strives always to promote peace between nations and prepares to make personal sacrifices for that ideal; • urges and practices a spirit of understanding of every other man's beliefs as a step toward in-ternational goodwill, recognizing that there are certain basic moral and spiritual standards which will ensure a richer, fuller life." That is quite an assignment for any Rotarian to practice in thoughts and actions!
