DR. GLENDA NOGAMI, DEAN OF ACADEMICS Excerpts from Belvoir, VA Newspaper

The newest addition to the Army Management Staff College, Dr. Glenda Nogami, is a perfect fit for the rapidly chang-ing institution. She was a social psychology professor at University of Bielefeld in Germany, worked as a team leader at the United States Army Research Institute in Alexandria and taught at the U.S. Army War College located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Growing up on the sun-kissed island of Lanai, Hawaii, Glenda spent a few days working in the pineapple fields and the summers working at Pine Isle Market, before crossing the Pacific to attend Purdue University in Indiana where she earned degrees in psychology and social psychology.

Fluent in German and proficient in Japanese, Glenda has published more than 80 articles and reports on topics such as organizational development and women in the military, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Applied So-cial Psychology and the journal of Innovation.

Her previous position was at Immigration and Naturalization Services, where she developed and assessed departmental policies, including the work life and drug free programs.

Her goal? “To make this a world class educational institution for Army civilians and military, serving the needs of the Army.”

Glenda, (‘68) is the daughter of the former Irene Misaye Sorida and the late Wilfred Yukio Nogami. Her brother, Dr. Wallace Nogami, (’70) resides in Arizona and is a full service doctor who handles “all types of anesthesia from trauma to obstetrics and pediatrics.” Glenda’s sister Karen (‘78) is a Special Education teacher in Hilo, Hawaii.

Editor’s note: Mahalo to Tom and Jane Thornburg for submitting the article.

REMITICADO REUNION by Judy Ruidas Shiroma

The Remiticado’s First Cousin Reunion was held on October 8, 2004 at the Main Street Ballroom, Las Vegas, Nevada. There were 65 in atten-dance, some of whom traveled Washington, DC, Northern & Southern California, Hawaii and Nevada. Siblings of the Remiticado’s coordinating this event were Sally (Tabura) and Roy Cadiente, Ralph and Maria Ruidas, Bobbie (Ruidas) & Randy Mizuno, and Judy (Ruidas) Shiroma. Special

recognition was accorded to Fred Remiticado and Juanita (Remiticado) Vergara, the only children of Olympio and Barbara Remiticado, who were able to attend the momentous event. The remaining Remitica-dos who were unable to attend are Benita and Julian Ruidas, Flora & Richard Bibilone, Tony Remiti-cado and Rehino Remiticado. A very special candlelight ceremony was held for those who are no longer with us: Olympio and Barbara Remiti-cado, Marie and Gabe Haime, Delores Endo, Lorraine & Paniong Tabura, and cousins Jerry Ta-bura, Ryan Bibilone and Jojo Remiticado. Also attending the very special event was the Vergara family. This was the first time in several years that all four sons were together with their parents. Entertainment was performed by the illustrious sounds of Henry Dulan who hails from Kapaa, Hawaii. This reunion gave each and every one a chance to reunite with loved ones, to meet new family members, and share some fun and exciting times together, while building lasting memories. Everyone went home fully nur-tured by the experience and longing to get together again to share that very special bond that the Remiticado clan so cherishes. The reunion was planned to coincide with the annual LACA-Vegas Reunion the next evening so all could enjoy the fellowship of old schoolmates and reminisce with fellow Lanaians. LACA topped off a fun weekend filled with Aloha.

1945 Mieko Shiroma Norr, residing in Utah would love to get together with classmates and friends in Las Vegas at the ’05 LACA Vegas Connection on October 8.

1952 The following information was extracted from Richard Kawakami’s February Minutes: We celebrated the birthdays of Eddie Hokama, Jane Okimoto Morrison and Richard Ka-wakami at Marukai Food Court in Gardena, California. Edith Kinoshita Gikiu baked a deli-cious chocolate chip cake topped with rich chocolate frosting and provided ice cream. Frank Gikiu artfully printed the names of Eddie, Jane and Richard on the cake.

In addition to the birthday bags presented by Edith and Stanley Juan to the birthday trio, Stanley also brought a variety of sushi and gave everyone homemade persimmon jam. Other items shared were See’s valentine candy canes from Jane, arare cookies from Eddie and Mitsue Hokama, See’s Nuts/Chews chocolates from Richard Kawakami. Richard also gave cards to Eddie and Jane with lottery tickets. Polly Sorida Ah Cook left some cherry mui and tsukemono with Eddie when both met in Las Vegas. David Funada brought chicken bao and shumai. He presented a Hawaiian key chain to the men and floral magnets to the women.

The next meeting will be on March 11 to welcome Rosita Valdez Shoenthal from Berlin, Germany.

1953 The Class of ’53 is entering a new birthday decade ~the 70’s! Birthday wishes to: 1/15 - -Carl and Jean Ajirogi visited with relatives on Oahu in January. 1/30 – - Marianne Teruya Higa got the day off from the bank on her annual special day. 3/1 – George Yokoyama who feels regenerated and enjoys his part time job. 3/13 – Alejandro and Janice Eligado celebrate special occasions (birthday, anniversaries, etc.) in Las Vegas.

Pre-birthday delights: Dick and Shirley Nunotani Smith, Roger and Helen Yamato Vaughn thor-oughly enjoyed going on a Caribbean Cruise! Earl and Nora Honda went on a tour to Hokkaido, Japan.

How are you at keeping secrets or throwing a surprise party? Jake Hueu collaborated with family, relatives, friends, and several classmates and planned a surprise 70th birthday party for his wife Rosita for Saturday, Febru-ary 12.

Who should come knocking on the door one night early? Robert Babing Godinez with his omiyagi, which is his signature Filipino pastry, maruya (banana fritters)! Clueless, Rosita accepted the pastry and chit-chatted with Babing in the living room oblivious of the sound of a car that pulled up.

A suspicious Jake nonchalantly left the room and went outside. Who should be walking up the driveway but Bruno Oroyan (classmate) bearing a huge basket of goodies! With arms flailing Jake signaled Bruno, Shirlene Delgado and her granddaughter to go away because this was not the party night! The three hurriedly departed and took in the movie “The Bogeyman” at Signature Theater. The evening of the bash, Val Tanodra and his grandson Justin arrived an hour early and were told by Robbie to “get lost” and hide upstairs. As the 65 revelers arrived they quietly congregated outdoors. What was the hon-oree doing? Immersed, focusing on LACA business and pecking away on the computer!

The “onolicious” Hawaiian food was prepared by Glenn and Nani Eugenio assisted by Audrey Olson, Sheldon (Butch) Canida, and Aaron Canida. Music was provided by LACA members: Sonny Dalde, Jay Reponte, Robin Collado, Robert Garcia and guest bongo player, Michael Bunda.

1958 by Carol Ann Tsumura Fujimoto (group photo: Belen Naanep, Carol Ann Fujimoto, Jeri Iba, Monica Cockett, Ismael Naanep, Emidgio Jamero, Robert Viduya)

When classmates are in town, the Class of ’58 likes to get together to reminisce. That’s exactly what they did on Tuesday, January 18, when Dr. Ismael Naanep and his lovely wife, Belen, visited from Des Moines, Iowa. Prior to meeting with classmates in Honolulu, Ismael (Smitty) and Belen visited Lana’i for a few days.

In Honolulu, they had dinner at Sizzlers in Pearlridge with Monica Cockett, Carol Ann Fujimoto, Jeri Iba, Emidgio Jamero, and Robert Viduya. After catching up on news of friends and recalling school days and growing up on Lana’i, they literally closed the restaurant. Although the years have passed, it seemed like only yesterday when certain incidents were shared. It was kind of a preview of what’s coming in October.

The Class of ’58 turns a young 65 this year. We’re having a reunion to celebrate this special time (when many will be collecting social security checks). A Las Vegas reunion to coincide with the annual LACA Reunion is being planned for Friday, October 7. Please consider joining us for a memorable time. Call Jeri (Hirayama) Iba at (808) 455-5848, to reserve a space or two or if you’d like to join our planning sessions.

IN MEMORY OF KIYOSHI MANA MINAMI 1929 – 2005

OUR REMEMBRANCES Pierce Myers, Principal, Lanai High and Elementary School Mana was an inspiration to me when he spoke of his time as an educator. His passion for education supported his work with LACA and his support for Lanai High and Elementary School. I’ll remem-ber most vividly sitting on Nona and Mana’s patio in Mililani and talking of educational issues. Thanks for the memory and inspiration. 1941 Katherine Minn Mana was such a scholar and a gentleman. I don’t remember him dating, although the girls were interested in him. 1941 Akira Charlie Takahama

Miss Helen Inaba (now Mrs. Helen Fujie) organized the Senior Quintet comprised of Mana, Akira, Yoshiyuki Yochan Tomiyama, Jackie Hirano, and Tadao Miyazaki. Mana had a beautiful voice and sang alto. We performed at school carnivals and school functions. After being discharged from the military, I thought about what Mana had done after graduating from high school and decided to go to college on the mainland and attend college. 1944 Kwi Soon Lee Mana was a good leader in school who blazed the way and had his peers and underclassmen realize that in spite of the economy “Where there’s a will there’s a way.” A man like Mana should live forever. 1949 Alice Eligado Miyamura Mana was my Social Studies teacher. During my senior year a group of Caucasian teachers including Nona came to teach on La-nai. I sang with a band with Ale Arao and John Tanodra as musicians at the Haole Clubhouse. ( When asked, “What Haole Club-house?” Alice was referring to the former plantation manager’s home which is now the Social Hall up on the hill.). 1949 Jane Kuwada Thornburg Mana’s passing is a loss to all the Lanaians. 1950 Walter Manriki (Pine Lad) I’m really saddened by Mana’s passing. It is so unexpected. I know he has gone home to a much better place. God bless Mana and his family. 1950 John Tanodra (Pine Lad) I will always cherish Kiyoshi Mana Minami as a friend, coach, teacher and advisor at Lanai High School. 1951 Jane Sakamura Nakamura Mana helped me write my Salutatorian speech. I have fond memories of him as my teacher and advisor. He was a good man. 1951 Vicente Ozoa (Pine Lad) I remember Coach Minami taking the Pine Lads to the Big Island to participate in the Shriner’s Tournament. 1952 Daniel Anbe (Pine Lad) Mana was a special booster for me at Lanai High and subsequently in my professional life and I will always want to do well by him. He was my coach and friend. My prayers for Nona 1952 Jaime and Lu Pagampao Dugay: (Pine Lad) It has been 55 years since I played Junior and Varsity basketball under Coach Minami. He taught us how to play as a team. Not so much as winning but play together as a team. Lu and I will long remember Kiyoshi Mana Minami as a coach and teacher. “Lanai is Coach Minami and Nona! 1952 Hatsue Higa I was a 6th grader when I saw Mana perform in the production “The Mikado.” He was my Social Studies teacher and gave hard tests where we really had to think of the answers. He liked to use the word rela-tionship in his tests. Ex. What is the relationship of A to B? 1952 Richard Kawakami (Pine Lad) Mana Minami was an icon and mentor who dedicated his life to LACA and the people of Lanai. Words cannot adequately express the great loss we all feel in our hearts. I will forever be grateful for his firm guidance in high school that has influenced my life.

1952 Kiyomi Akahoshi Kunishige In Social Studies class Mr. Minami told us to read the newspaper every day and not believe everything you read. He said to make it a point to read the A editorial page. Those statements have stayed with me until this day. 1952 Rosita Valdez Shoenthal When our class once tossed out a decision we had just voted for, Mr. Minami reacted with dismay and disbelief at our ignorance of democratic rules. I think I understood then that we have rules and procedures in order not to be arbitrary. I’ll never forget the disdain on his face. 1953 Teophilo Cabalo (Pine Lad) Mana’s first teaching assignment was on Lanai. As a 7th grader I recall the rumor circulating on campus saying Mr. Minami attained the black belt rank in karate. One day Richard Fukuchi, my classmate, and I mentioned this to Mana. He demonstrated and told us, “When you’re faced with an aggressor, crouch low and slowly turn using the balls of your heels. Then you run like hell!” 1953 Rufina Rabbon Kula Kiyoshi Mana Minami was truly a friend of Lanai. I felt it in his participation at our class reunions, which was and is pretty often. His involvement with LACA projects and in his visits back home kept the closeness that we all feel toward each other…no matter which era we were from in the history of Lanai. We miss him, and will remember him as part of our Lanai fiber. Our Love and Aloha to his wife Nona and Family. 1953 Jacob Hueu (Pine Lad) I remember the school’s Barefoot Football League. The school played against the community teams namely the Rookies and 49er’s and a team from Molokai. Mana was the Quarterback in the barrel weight division with the Rookies team. The barrel weight players scaled in at 250 pounds and Mana must have been about 145 pounds! 1953 Rosita Viduya Hueu It was a humbling and moving experience for me to be asked by Nona to participate in Mana’s memorial service. His passing leaves a void in our hearts and in our organization. His great works will live on. I was on respite from alumni activities after Tommy Nunotani died when Mana called months later to say it was time for me to get involved again. 1953 Valentine Tanodra Through Mr. Minami’s inspiration and guidance, as a young Marine I excelled in boxing and judo. In Education, he gave me the extra gas (fuel) to go for my 5th year degree. In life, he was my Guardian Angel. I’m gonna miss this individual, but I know he’ll be around me in spirit. 1955 Libby Viduya (Pine Lad) During Mana’s time it was uncommon for students to attend college. Mana was the first in his generation to graduate from Wis-consin Stout Institute and return to teach on Lanai. 1970 Nani Kwon Watanabe We of the Maui Lanai Connection send our love and aloha to Nona and her family. Mana’s legacy will live on forever in the hearts of all of us from Lanai who got to know this wonderful man. Aloha Ke Akua 1970 Pinky Blanko My thoughts and prayers will be with Mana and also for Nona. A great gentleman. I got to know him through LACA.

GO PINE LADS, GO! 2005 Homecoming

The Lanai Alumni and Community Association is grateful to Pierce Myers and the school for including LACA in the LHES Homecoming parade on February 5, 2005. For LACA members and guests, the Lanai Union Hall was the gath-ering place for fun and fellow-ship Wednesday to Saturday. Although the Pine Lads were

defeated in the basketball game against Maui High School Friday evening, your presence at the various events showed how proud you are to be part of the Pine Lads and Pine Lass spirit.

Classes carried out a Polynesian theme in decorating their floats. LHS students, Reighton Lamay and Danica Lute, reigned as King and Queen. The Sophomores, Class of 2007, with Donovan Ozoa as class president, won first place in the float contest. They also did well in the entertain-ment portion during the school assembly.

In the parade line-up following the school, a Coca Cola truck decorated with banners heralded the Alumni contingent. LACA’s royal couple,

Vicente and Eleanor Ozoa, rode in the lead cart. Twelve other decorated golf carts with class placards and riders cruised the town square twice much to the delight of viewers who lined the streets.

Lanai High and Elementary School has a special part in the hearts and spirit of Lanaians and especially for those who have attended the school. Sporting the school’s colors of green and gold many spectators and participants wore the hunter green shirts imprinted with the LACA logo in gold, which were sold by Eloise Mahaulu, Sheila Eligado, and other volunteers. More shirts are available at Richard’s Shopping Center on Lanai thanks to the sustained support of Wallace Tamashiro

We apologize if other volunteers have been inadvertently left out. Top notch entertainment was provided by comedian Mel Cabang, Kumu hula Lynette Kaopuiki’s halau, and the musi-cians of Uprise. Adding to the excitement were the give-

away prizes donated by the Lanai vendors. Let’s patronize the following es-tablishments to show our appreciation to the managers/owners for their con-tinued cooperation and generosity. LINKING THE PAST TO THE PRESENT LACA FELLOWSHIP and MEETING

Mother Nature thwarted the plans of the LACA Oahu contingent who is-land-hopped to Lanai for a fellowship and informational get-together on March 12. Undaunted by the inclement weather on Saturday, Ruth Na-kasone, Nickie Oshiro, Jo-Ann Zukeran, Annette Tijerina, Jake and Rosita Hueu darted from the car to visits at the Lanai Community Hospital, meals at Blue Ginger, Café 565, treks to the

shops, sightseeing around the community and picking up the “broke da mouth” chicken hekka plate lunches at Dole Park prepared by Guy Wong and assisted by the food service crew of his wife, Len, and the Eligado ohana.

The Senior Center, delightfully decorated for Easter and managed by Maggie Masicampo, was the gathering place for fel-lowship and a LACA informational meeting.

Members were treated to re-freshments shared by attendees and set up by Sue Obado. Preceding the meeting, videos covering the ‘05 LACA Vegas

Connection and the ’05 Homecoming were available for viewing. In mem-ory of deceased members and in tribute to those who perished or are serving

in the armed forces, the group sang “God Bless America.” After the meeting, Len Fabrao and Garek Eligado provided several musical renditions.

Reports were presented in accordance with the vision and eight membership purposes of LACA. Comprehensive presentations were

made by: Pierce Myers, Butch Gima, Garek Eligado, Sheila Eligado, Rosita

Camero, Ruth Nakasone, Nickie Oshiro, Jo-Ann Zukeran, Jacob Hueu, Rosita Hueu.

Annette Tijerina, Incoming Corresponding Secretary, was introduced. Special recognition was given to Eloise Mahaulu for her tireless effort in recruiting new members in spite of her physical disability. Betty Barbadillo was also commended for disseminat-ing information and getting Lanaians interested in becoming LACA members. Eleanor Ozoa, former director, served as liaiason for this event.

In retrospect, visiting Mrs. Kaya who is 99 years old, Helen Sonido, and meeting Mr. Cas-tillo, Mr. Acorda, Mr. Lopez, and Mrs. Georgia Abilay’s mom at the Lanai Community Hospital was a flashback to the past and such a heart warm-ing moment!

March 29, 2005 Mr. Pierce Myers Lana'i High and Elementary School P. O. Box 630757 Lana'i City, HI 96763 Dear Pierce, I want to reaffirm the Lana'i Alumni and Community Association's belief in Lana'i High and Elementary School and the athletic pro-gram. The students have faced adversities in the past and through sheer determination and values instilled by the LHES faculty and their families emerged either as champions or enriched their lives in overcoming barriers. The young girls on the basketball team who made the wrong choice must have now learned that life is made up of choices and one must accept the consequences and learn from the unfortunate experience. We wish them well in their quest in becoming productive students with brighter outlooks. We commend co-captains Chante Dupree and Kristi Ayudan, "the brave defenders of our school," for their morals and high stan-dards. Through their strong hearted leadership and the valiant effort of the newly formed team, they will play with integrity and make themselves and the community proud! Our heartiest best wishes to the Girls Basketball Team for a good season as they uphold the banner of the Green and Gold when they participate in the Maui Interscholastic League! Sincerely, Rosita Viduya Hueu LACA President cc: David McHugh, Athletic Director
