From your Editors: Comments & etc.

Another first for The Eller Chronicles - color covers - all due to the beneficence of EF A Board Member Winnie Green of Lawton, OK, and her daughter Bonnie Yvonne, as their way of publicizing the Arts and Crafts Fair and Sale at Conf. '95. This is not the first monetary or crafts contribution to the EF A by Winnie and Yvonne. This is a colorful way to remind our Arts and Crafts members to prepare for Conf '95.

A picture from Tennessee in the Queries Section in this issue calls attention to the Pioneer Night Cookout at Conf. '95. on Wednesday evening 19 July 1995. The sender, who claims to be a descendant of Jacob Eller, Jr. of Buncombe Co., NC, declined to be identified but promised to be at Conf. '95 and reveal more about the picture. With the picture came the startling comment that the period depicted by the dress styles suggested frontiersman Jacob Eller Jr. and the second wife he acquired after disappearing from Buncombe County, NC, back mto Tennessee in the early 1800's. This will require much additional proof.

Voluntary contributions to the EF A of all types are on the increase: monetary, time, interest, and energy. For example, in addition to the expensive color covers from Winnie Green, a large portion of the cost of the conference T -shirts will be donated by an EF A couple. Gross sales of Arts and Crafts Fair will go the EF A, as will all publications except the second reprint of J.W. Hook's 1957 book and Another Eller Family Cookbook - from these only profits after printing costs go to the EF A The number of members who contribute $1 00 per year to become sustaining members reached a new record in 1994, and we hope a new record will be set in 1995. Also important to the continuing success of the EFA are those members who contribute time, energy, and efforts to recruit new members, to recruit nominees for officers, to plan for the biennial conferences, to research, compile and publish Eller Family History and Genealogy. This group of members has increased substantially in number during the past two years.

The Nominating Committee, chaired by Lowell Eller, and including Vance Eller, and Kathryn Owens, have completed the task assigned to them by President Lynn Eller and

37

Page 14: VOL.IX-2 MAY 1995 THE ELLER CHRONICLES...The Eller Chronicles IX-2 May 1995 CONTENTS Conf. '95 & Other Announcements From the President Resolution of the Board By-Law of the Eller

The Eller Chronicles IX:2 May 1995

offer us a stellar slate of new officers and Board members. When Lynn decided not to accept nomination for another term as President (a decision very much regretted by many), a search for a new President had to be initiated. Finding a member willing to accept this important responsibility has never been easy. However, this time the Committee had a larger pool from which to recruit individuals with interests, demonstrated talents, and a track record of service to the EF A.

After a successful career in the U.S. Navy, Walton Eller served for seven years as the Mayor of Crowley, Texas (7-8,000 people) - an experience that required ability to work cooperatively with people and organizations, especially volunteer organizations, like the EF A. He is a charter member of the EF A and has served four years as a member of the EFA Board of Directors. In Walton, the EFA has a nominee well equipped to replace and carry on the good work ofLynn Eller

John Eller, the nominee for Vice-President, brings an abundance of good will, good sense, and sound judgement to the Board. The success which he and his wife Lucy have demonstrated during the past two years in finding and recruiting new Ellers to the EF A from across the nation is well known. They will continue in this important work, but will be looking for more help from each family line and from each state. John is a retired high level manager from the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. This is not the place or the time to give details of one of John's major contributions to the EF A.. However, it is well known among the majority of the 1993-1995 board that he (and Ed Eller) played major roles in preventing the Board's dissolution during the recent unpleasantness that broke out among Bord members in 1994. John and Lucy are also active in research, compiling, and sharing genealogy. Like many members, they have learned that much of the joy in doing genealogy comes from sharing rather than hoarding information.

Nancy Eller, nominee for Secretary/Treasuer, is the most indespensible member of the Board. Without her efficient accounting system and counsel, the EF A could quickly sink into deep trouble. Some members of the Board think the By-Laws should be changed to permit the Sec./Treas. to serve ani :unlimited number of terms. Your editors support that view. We do not have a long line of people competing for jobs on the board. The Sec./Treas. is the one job that requires special technical skills that are not possessed by everyone. Nancy, before her retirement, served for twenty five years as an accountant to two different Texas towns. Her son, Walton Eller Jr., is a CPA in one of the largest accounting firms in the country and is available for counsel and guidance, especially when some members get excited and charge the EF A with breaking the rules of the IRS. Also, Nancy is a member after our own heart in that she is the only member known to us who reads each issue of the Chronicles from cover to cover, and earnestly tries to keep in mind all the different Eller lines. Important also to an organization such as the EF A, where researching, compiling and publication of genealogy and family history is the only reason for its existence, is the fact that Walton and Nancy have done all of these things- see their report, Ancestors and Descendants of James Granville Eller, Chronicles, Sp. Ed. Vol. VIII-4, Nov 1994).

The Nominating Committee wisely left two experienced and hard working members on the Board - Winnie Green and Bethel Stolte. Both have been and continue to be special contributors to th~ Arts and Crafts Fair at the Biennial Conferences. Bethel also serves as Historian. She has filled four huge notebooks (at her own expense) with pictures and documents from past conferences. Two of these reside in the Eller Archives and two more are ready for placement there after Conf. '95. Winnie Green is a tough minded Oklahoma lady with lots of old fashioned moxie mixed with keen insight into the ways and foibles of people. Winnie will tell it like it is.

The three remaining nominees for the Board: Calvin Evans, Hazel James Eller, and Kent Eller rounds out the slate. Each has demonstrated in various ways their interest in Eller Family History and Genealogy and in the EF A. Your editors have no doubt but that they have much to contribute to the Board and to the EF A and will work in harmony to serve the best interests of the entire membership. We know well each member of the Board and testify to their qualifications and fine spirit.

As editors of the The Eller Chronicles, we applaud the work of the Nominating Committee, and support their slate without reservation. It is our opinion that this slate, if elected, will insure that problems within the Board will not be repeated during 1995-1997 We hope at the membership meeting at Conf. '95 the entire slate will be elected.

Your editors have a special comment and request: We did not anticipate in 1987 when we founded The Eller Chronicles that we had embarked on another full-time career. The first six years went smoothly, but the past two years have been especially difficult. We need a rest. We are calling loudly for others to take over our work as Editors of the

Chronicles. See What is the Eller Ch.ronicles? pp. 67-68.

Bring your family pictures and Eller records etc. Come and check to see if your name and that of your relatives are in the computer data bases which will be available for examination. Reminder: Saturday's Picture Making Session and Banquet. In the past, most people dressed up a bit for these occasions, but casual wear, even your pioneer costume, is acceptable. The EF A has no dress code. Let us know if we can provide additional information.

Query and Letter Section The large number of letters pr~clude printing each in its entirety. Name and address of sender is followed by abstracted quotes and editorial comments and for some a Quer:. is included.

Renate Eller Soddermann, 61 Noxon Rd. Poughkeepsie, NY 12603, 9 Feb. '95. "I am an immigrant from Germany (1963). Looking for Eller families who went to America. Please send me the Eller Chronicles- check $15.00 enclosed. My roots in Dusseldorf area and Koln. My father - Julius Eller b 1900; my gr father Johann Heinrich Eller (Rottweii/Neckar) b 18 May1842 - next back Greg Philipp Eller (wife Anna Catharina Valentn) - cannot go back further." She has the distinction of being the most recent Eller immigrant to America from Germany known to the EF A. That her family came from Dusseldorf is of great interest in view of the persistent tradition, yet to be proven, that George Michael, Henry, Christian, Jacob and Melchoir Eller came from Dusseldorf. We hope Renate can provide more information about her Eller family of that area. (Note: We met another German from Dusseldorf recently who told us he used to hang out in the area of Dusseldorf where the old town of Eller once existed. He was familiar with the Eller Castle and said the Eller name was very common in that area as well as thoughout Germany.

Michael Alan Reese, Old Trails Research, 747 Quiet Forest, Houston, TX 7704, 8 Feb 1995. Michael is a past membr and contributor who hopes to come to Conf. '95 . He sends family group sheets on the George Virl Osmond family (the TV Osmond Family Singers). George Osmond and his wife Olive Davis are listed on p. 386 of Hook's 1957 book on George Michael Eller. This family connects with Catherine Eller Stoker (Peter, George Michael) through the VanNoys and Welkers. Calvin Evans ofPhoenix, has more information on this line and confirms that the Osmonds are a collatoral family of the George Michael Eller line.

Charlene Eller, 49 Veronica Vista, Decatur, IL 62526, 30 Jan. 1995 - "I am an 'Eller by Choice My husband was Rupert Eller d Jan 1961 . Several letters sent to Eller addresses inN. Nelson and Nancy Eller were parents of three boys and two girls - William Alexander, Robert Lee, Samuel N., Hattie, and Mattie Eller. Surviving grandchildren mentioned include Earl, Elva, Edna, and Edith ." We provided Charlene some leads. In a second letter Charlene sent her husbands ancestral chart- (See the Genealogy Section).

Karen K. Eller, 562 Adams Road, Fayetteville, GA 30214, 19 Mar 1995. Thanks so much for your letter ... excitement reigned in our house today when it was read! Earl D. Flowers, 2412 Pearce St., Lake City, FL 32025, (n.d), - a new EF A member with whom we talk frequently. He sends some family history stories about descendants of Michael Graybill Sr. (allied with the George Michael Eller line), and has directed us to information available in the LDS Branch Library which we need to check. His Query: "In Hook's 1957 book, Page 141-142, George Koons (believed by Hook to be a son of Gasper Koons) and Mal"y Eller Koons, also had a son named Gasper, who would be the brother of my Grandmother, Elizabeth Marthn "Massie" Koons . I am seeking any info on Gasper and his descendants."

E.W. Ellor, RR 1 Box 169 Ticonderoga, NY, 12883. His telephone call was followed by an exchange of information. In ltr. of 5 Mar 1995, he says, "Andrew, James, and William Ellor ... arrived in the U.S. in the mid-1850's from the area in and around Manchester, England. A few years later they settled in the Bloomfield, NJ, area and began a series of manufacturing businesses. Their families were generally large with the male children entering the family business ... I do know there are supposed to be more than 100 families still residing in England. I made contact with two of them but cannot connect them to my own family ... I agree with your idea that somewhere in time, the Er's and Or's did probably have the same origin." Included with his letter was a large copy of his working genealogical chart on his American Ellors. We know that the Eller name in America was often spelled Ellor or Ellar- one census in Rowan County, NC, spelled the name Ellor in almost every case. A compilation of variant spellings of names from both American and German sources that sound and spell like Eller has led me to suspect that many of them had a common origin, but finding proof is another story .. We have published information from England on Eller families (name variously spelled) in Yorkshire, England. (EC V1:3:183; V11 :2:151-153). Documentation for four of five first Eller immigrants to America suggest they were probably from the English Eller families; they were: Samuel Eller (1663), Enock Eller (1668), John Ellers (1680). Thomas Ellers (1680). W.T. Eller (1680) was identified as a German. EFA member Margaret W. Eller, 7000 20th St., #878, Vero Beach, FL 32966 has traced her husband back to England via Canada and has promised to send in his pedigree. We hope to see Margaret again at Asheville.

Geraldine Roberts Duncan, 33 5 Beverly Hills Circle, Lynchburg, VA 24502-4105, 7 Feb 1995 to Lynn Eller, - "Steve Sherwood sent me info on the Eller Family Conference in Asheville. I recently found out I am kin to the Eller's and had not heard of the Eller Family Association. Mary Biffle Eller was my 3rd gr. grandmother on my daddy's side .. . my husband and I would like to attend but will be staying with a cousin. My father was William McKinley Roberts, his mother was Susan Jane Fox Roberts, her mother was Mary Ann Elizabeth Eller, her father was Adam Eller, son of Mary Biffie Eller." ------

Jack B. and Doris Hall, P.O. Box 1117, Southern Pines, NC 28388, 14 Feb '95 to Nancy Eller. Her lineage is Doris Stout Hall (Hascue T. Stout s/o Laura Ettie Eller Stout), Laura E. Eller Stout, d/o David Eller and Samantha Sams Eller, Peter Eller, s/o Henry Eller and Elizabeth Johnson Eller), Henry Eller (s/o Peter Eller and Elizabeth Dick Eller, Peter Eller (eldest son of George Michael Eller) .

Blanche Robertson, 21 Parkers Cove Road, Weaverville, NC, 28787. - will be a presenter at the Conference. We visit often with her to discuss Biffie, Eller, and Weaver genealogy. We always leave with new information and a feeling of awe at what this lady knows about the genealogy and local history of her area ofBuncombe Co., NC.

Ellen Byrne, Rt. 1, Box 69-IA, Juliaetta, ID 835350-9608, 5 Nov '95, After answering her query in the Genealogical Helper that mentioned that her Fore ancestors had married Eller wives in Buncombe Co., NC, Ellen sent a mass of data on her Fore families. A

quick perusal reveals some interesting information but this will have to await further study and preparation before publication in the Chronicles.

Dr. Ronald Eller, The Appalachian Center, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY -Since publishing his paper in the last issue I have talked with Dr. Eller. He tells me that he is fairly certain his line of West Virginia Ellers descended from Peter (George Michael), however, there remains one link he has not made. He is a very busy young man whose schedule leaves little time for genealogy or much else not connected with his work at Kentucky and with the Appalachian Regional Commission, plus a project that involves President Clinton. He provided unexpected new connections for the EF A: His sister Anita, who lives in Asheville, NC, is a fabalous banjo picker. Her husband is Mark Pruett, who is a well known instrumentalist who has toured with country singer Ricky Skaggs. He and Anita used to have separate bands but now Anita is home with two children and Mark continues to lead a band. I have talked with Anita by telephone and she has volunteered to help out at the Conference with the entertainment. She has contacts with all the musicians and dancers in the region.

Mary Alice Heflin Boodt, 8016 Sunfield Ct., Indianapolis, IN 46214, 28 Mar 1995 to Nancy Eller ... She senda a 60 page manuscript entitled The Eller-Farmer Story, The Ancestors and Descendants. The author is a descendant of Leonard Eller (George Michael). This is the third large mansucript received since 30 March. We are most grateful and will be in touch with Mary Alice to work out the details for publishing her material in a future issue.

George C. Eller D, Apt. 1005, 8214 Princeton Sq. Blvd. E., Jacksonville, FL 32256. 4 April 1995. This is our first contact with George and we are pleased to publish his paper on Lucius Elom Eller in the Genealogy Section. Jacob Eller, gr. graandfather of Lucius "Lute" Eller, of this report appears to be the same Jacob Eller listed by Hook (1957, p. 52 as the eighth and last child of Leonard Eller and Elizabeth Masts. We hope George will provide additional information on the descendants of Lucius Eller.

Jo White Linn, The Rowan County Register. This authorative genealogical journal is written and published quarterly by Jo White Linn, an eminent genealogist in Rowan County, North Carolina. To subscribe send $25.00 per year to Rowan County Register, P.O. Box 1948, Salisbury, NC 28145-1948. Back issues are available. This is a most valuable research aid for early Rowan County, NC. Jo White Linn, C.G., has given The Eller Chronicles permission to publish her Prolegomenon (Foreword) from the above publication--- to appear in a future publication -- this describes a fifteen year period ( 1763-1778) when settlers in Rowan County had no way to enter land because all land offices were closed and they were forced to become "squatters". The earliest Eller and Biffle families in Rowan County acquired some land without becoming entangled in the problem but as the following abstracts show other Eller and Biffle land were involved:

"#3068, no date, 1778, Leonard Eller 300 A on both sides of Sheit's Crk., adj Widow Bower, & Valentine Beard, including his improvements." ( p. 233).

"#1124, 28 Jul 1778, Cunrod Coygher 400 A on waters of Dutch Second Crk adj Killian Aronhart, Lopewaser, Melcher Eller & Lambly's Improvements, including his own Improvement's" ( pg. _?_-failed to record.)

A recognized weakness of some material published in The Eller Chronicles from the viewpoint of professional genealogists is the lack of adaquate documentation of the

sources from which information was obtained. This was one of several publication problems that led to the following recommendation in the EF A Long Range Plan: That an Advisory Editorial Committee of at least three be appointed by the President to assist the Editors of The Eller Chronicles in planning and implementation of a program of quality control for any EFA sponsored publications. After this recommendation was approved and became policy, it became the stumbling block that precipitated problems within the Board. We hope the new Board will move to implement this policy.

A recommended text: Lackey, Richard S., Cite Your Sources- A Manual for Documenting Family Histories and Genealogical Records, Polyanthos, New Orleans, 1980. This is the only book known to have been published exclusively for the use of genealogists on how to document all sources of information used in genealogical publications. Widely recommended as a reference book by professionals, the book contains numeous examples on how to cite sources from all kinds of records. The author says his purpose for the manual, "is to provide genealogists with an uncomplicated, yet academically acceptable guide to basic citations.

A second publication problem yet to be addressed has to do with the general subjects of evidence and proof.

A recommended text:

Stephenson, Noel C., Genealogical Evidence, Aegean Park Press, P .O. Box 2837, Laguna Hills, CA 92654. Sub title: A Guide to the Standard of Pruof Relating tu Pedigrees, Ancestly, Heirship and Family Hist01y. This gets to the most crucial questions of genealogy. What is evidence and how is it classified? How does one judge the credibility of evidence? What is ultimate proof and can it ever be obtained? What is meant by "the preponderance of evidence." These are all questions that mean different things to different genealogists, especially amateur genealogists like all of us in the EF A membership.

Lucius Elom Eller (14 Mar 1884-23 Dec 1953) by George C. Eller, II, Apt. 1005, 8214 Princeton Sq. Blvd. E. Jacksonville;FL 32256

"Honor your father and mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you." Ex.20:12 NASB

Probable descendant of Leonard Eller Mar.20,1754-Sept 9,1839 and Elizabeth Mast 1754?-1831?; descendant of Jacob Eller Mar.12, 1798-Feb.24,1855, and Elizabeth Byrkit 1802-1876; Elom Eller Sept. 14,1826-Aug.14,1902, and Sabrina Patterson Sept.11,1831-Feb.18, 1874; Warren A. Eller ?1855 -Nov.27,1919 and Laura Fuller 1860-May.12,1894.

Married Elsie Estelle Cook, 7 children, two brothers and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Lucius "Lute" Eller ended his days on the afternoon of December 23, 1953; and passed on unexpectedly but peacefully in his favorite chair. I was with him earlier on that day.

He was a victim of that saying "familiarity breeds contempt". It was not his fault, rather; a few that were close to him, chose to slight him. This was puzzling to most of those that knew him. That's why I'm writing; to try to set the record straight. Most people are not properly taught loyalty; which is first, - to God allmighty and his word. Second, to the marriage relationship, third, the children; then relatives, friends, and finally the government. If people were careful about these matters there would be much less trouble in the world.

The Eller Chronicles IX:2 May 1995

In actual dollars of that day, Lute would have been considered poor. At the time, his peers would have judged him lower-middle class. But he lived life as a rich man would have liked to. He had a small farm called a "truck " farm in those days; with horses several dairy cows and a flock of chickens. The farm including a ' new house had been given to him by his father. Even now, (1995) he is still famous in the area for his outstanding "truck" crops:

In his youth Lucius was quite a handsome young man with dark wavy hair and light blue eyes. He was also a snazzy dresser and had quite a reputation as the ladies man. He was notorious for having the liveliest team and the "smartest" buggys around. While he was still a boy; his moth·er - the former Laura Fuller had died of "consumption", or as we would now describe it- the flesh of her arm withered up. His father, Warren A. Eller was a very successful farmer and businessman. Lute was proud of his parents, and had the greatest honor for them.

He would not tolerate ·deteriorating quality and kept his white ~ouse and red outbuildings freshly painted. He kept his large yard 1mmaculate and had the typical German practice of sweeping the dirt around the outside of the house with a broom, which left several feet of bare dirt next to and around the house. The home is still standing in excellent condition on the NW corner of Inwood Rd., [Dragoon-Trail] and st.Joseph-Elkhart county line road; about 2 miles South of Osceola, Indiana. It is now owned by another family.

His life was lived by "signs''; whether it was animal tracks in the snow, weather conditions in the sky, changes in the appearance of animals, or attitudes in humans. In my opinion it is a special strength of some of the German people. He farmed by the "sign'' of the moon, and taught me how to do it. For those who may be interested, I'll briefly try to explain it. The principle is quite simple - that is, the ~oots of the plant are connected to the dark of the moon, and the tops of the plants to the full or "light" of the moon. For example, if you wanted to plant a root crop; say -turnips, you would plant the seeds on days close to the dark of the moon. However in practice; it was a bit more complex. Say, for example; you wanted to plant field corn for your livestock, on sandy ground which does not hold moisture as well as the clay or muck. Without thinking, one might say, plant it as close to the full moon as possible. Not so. That corn would need a strong root to continue growing in the late summer dryness and also to stand the fall and early winter storms. Therefore, plant it about a week AFTER the full moon.

He also tried to teach me how to care for stock by the signs of the moon, for example; dehorning cattle, castrating, weaning calves, and slaughtering. I am sorry to report that I did not remember it.

He lived his life by analyzing everything that he came across and no ''practical" activity was considered too mundane to not be treated as a "science". For example, one of the major factors in successful farming is the practical use of manure. I'll briefly try to pass on the secret. Manure runs in states of "hotness", from- cattle, which is the "mildest"; through sheep, horses, pigs, to chicken; which is the "hottest" or "sharpest". In the c<;tse of wat~rmellons,

you need heat for the chilly nothern-Indiana Spring. So, he would make a small hill with his hoe, say - 1 inch to an inch an a half high, and about 8 inches round. Then, from a bucket, throw(!) a small handful! of dry chicken manure at the hill. Next, 3-6 seeds are thrown onto the hill. Finally, an additional half to 1 inch of dirt is again scraped over the top of the seeds. This all may sound quite tedious, but once a person gets the "hang" of it,- using the mass production technique and going about it smartly; one man can put out several acres of mellons in his part time using only the hoe once the seed bed is ready. (In sandy soil plant 3-5 days AFTER the full moon.)

He despised machinery of all sorts, but lived in co-existence with living and thinking creatures, like good horses and dogs. The most complex machine that he was willing to accept was the wheelbarrow and that - just barely. One could not tell when a "Satanic" machine might go haywire and THAT was the problem. Lest the reader be misled, his handtools were kept in pristine condition and better than new. For example; his hoe was hung in a special dry place, and the wood handle was periodically treated with oils and preservatives. Also, the metal was kept oiled and sharpened to keep a type of knife edge. As a result - after years of heavy use, it was still better than new, since the handle was well cured and finished and would not split or splinter as easy, and the edge was keener.

Even more than a farmer, Lute was a hunter. It was unthinkable to him to come home without meat for the table; on a daily basis -except Sunday, during the hunting season. He had probably shot the last deer in the region some 25 years previously; and therefore had to depend on small game. It would be nearly 60 years before the deer population returned to normal. At least one unique feature of the house hinted of a strong hunter - the rooms had flower vases containing not flowers but pheasant feathers. Being a good hunter was most evident on Thanksgiving. The dining room had a large (oak?) table with 10 or 12 legs. With the extra leaves added, it was HUGE, and would have 5 or 6 different types of meats (no turkey), in piles, grown or shot by him.

His most special quality is the hardest to explain. He was sought out in an awesome way for his opinions and observations. From time to time, and especially on sunday afternoon, visitors would arrive, and it was not unusual to see 6-8 cars on the sides of the drive. At times, there were 12 or more. But they did not come for advice. Rather, it was for the stimulation that comes from an intellect that has a pure and profound way of looking at life. He despised phonyness and the untrue. He most despised not looking at life analytically and did not hesitate to ridicule those failing to do so. He was the master of the split second "come back" or "put down". But the recipients deserved their fare and it never failed to draw huge shouts of laughter and glee from his audience, which surprisingly; was nearly equal with women, and catered more to the intelligent class of people. He had a college degree in business, at the time when the norm was grammar school. Many of the visitors had not visited for 2-3 years, and some not for 5-6 years. Now, those with a bent for calculation will see the astounding number of visitors.

In my opinion his funeral procession was the longest ever in that region. The chapel held several hundred people with several hundred more standing outside. Most had to remain in their cars. It was about a mile and a half to the cemetery with cars backed up at least a half mile behind the chapel. Many people gave up for the delay and visited the cemetery later that day when the traffic jam subsided; some even waited until the next day. If a person can be judged by how well they are thought ofr then; Lucius Elom Eller - you did well.

Lucius was born on his great-grandfather Jacob's freeholding. This land as of 1992 is still in the Eller family, now owned by Warren J. Eller. It is located on the E. side of Basswood Rd.; about a quarter mile N. of Dragoon Trail and 2 miles "as the crow flys" SW of Osceola, Indiana. As I understand it, Jacob's cabin from 1831 was located just NE of the remains of the peppermint "still", which is still visible, and was erected by Elom Eller; who introduced the farming of peppermint into northern Indiana. The home next to the mint-still was built by Warren A. Eller, Lute's father.

Leonard Eller is buried in the private Eller cemetery just outside of Noblesville, Ind. The rest of the descendants mentioned are buried in the Osceola cemetery located on the SE corner of the intersection of US 33 (Lincoln Hwy] and the St.Joseph -Elkhart Co.Line Rd. Jacob and family, and Elom and family; rest on the west side; Warren and family in the center, and.Lucius and family on the east side.

It is probable that our Jacob is the son of Leonard 1754-1839. The evidence is circumsr.antial. Leonard had a son Jacob in North Carolina before 1800. It is proven that our Jacob was born in 1798 in N.Carolina, that he married in Miami County Ohio, near Leonard in April 28,1822, that he was the head of a household in Monroe Twp. Miami County in 1830 - close to Leonard; and that his son - Harvy Burkett Eller is buried in the private Eller cemetery with Leonard and other close members of Leonard's family. I have been unable to find a single document stating Leonard was Jacob's father. Possibly, the Miami Co. Ohio marriage records from -1822 have this information.

This article was written by Lute's grandson, George Eller 2nd., of Jacksonville, Florida.

What is THE ELLER CHRONICLES?

Is it a family NEWSLETTER?

Is it an infallible JOURNAL authenticated beyond question?

If it is the last, it is the only publication in the world today, including all the known writings in the history of the world that can make such a claim.

It is a family newsletter written and published by two people, one with certified scientific research credentials and the other with a proven background in journalism, writing and editing. Its expressed goal is to stimul tate interest in family history and research by every member or even non-members, not just a few self-styled "professional researchers."

The purpose of THE CHRONICLES is to "Tell the Story of the Ellers" as presented to us by non-professional researchers and writers whose goal is to learn and disseminate family history and to add information to the family coffers for scrutiny and constructive criticism.

TRUTH like BEAUTY is subject to interpretation.

To illustrate the above statement, let me tell you a true story.

For the last three years before retirement, I worked as writer, copy reader, and general make-yourself-useful do everything right·· hand- man (in my case woman) for the Chief Scientist of the National Park Service who was stationed as adjunct professor at Western Carolina University. At that time the North Carolina Academy of Science, a member of the National Academy of Science, conceived of a money raising scheme--produce a book on nature and science in North Carolina. This was to have been a book of the "garden club" variety. One that little ol 1 ladies in tennis shoes would willingly pay $40 or $50 for, read, enjoy and learn from scholars in the field. The Chief Scientist for whom I was working at the time was asked to write a chapter to be submitted to a jury of three of his peers for verification and approval.

Using the same scientific data he wrote one version and I wrote another. Both were submitted to the panel of experts. The results: One expert chose Dr. Smathers 1 version; one expert chose mine, another scientist chose Dr. Smathers 1 version but his wife chose mine.

MORAL Even experts don 1 t agree on truth, authenticity, or even style of writing. (My forte has always been in feature writing.)

Now back to the original question. Where in all the shades of gray between black and white does THE CHRONICLES stand?

67

Page 44: VOL.IX-2 MAY 1995 THE ELLER CHRONICLES...The Eller Chronicles IX-2 May 1995 CONTENTS Conf. '95 & Other Announcements From the President Resolution of the Board By-Law of the Eller

Each issue is submitted to a panel of over three hundred readers for scrutiny. In it's eight years of existence only two people (in that exponential number of peer critics-300xl2x8=a lot) have questioned editorial policy or the credibility or veracity of the people writing and publishing THE CHRONICLES.

As we have pointed out in another area of this issue, your editors in taking over this responsibility eight years ago did not intend this to be a second career. Although it has been rewarding and also time and energy and financially consuming, the "law of diminishing returns" does indeed come into play. \ve are not only willing to give up this responsibility, but would welcome volunteers who would take over and meet these quarterly deadlines. We are aware that anyone volunteering for this post would consider himself qualified both in terms of writing style and equipment required for the position, but in the meantime, we will struggle along (and as we pass our allotted three score years and ten with five already on borrowed time it does prove to be a struggle at times). We will continue our policy of publishing family histories as submitted to us by researchers who are responsible for the authenticity of their work. We will NOT; however, publish any materials that are submitted to us accompanied by demands, deadlines, or threats.

Juanita Eller, Co-Editor who for the past eight years has scheduled her life around THE ELLER FAMILY ASSOCIATION and the publication of THE ELLER CHRONICLES.
