The World As soon as the final bell rang on Friday afternoon, you could feel the excitement in the air as the entire Bur- roughs community got ready for one of the most antici- pated nights of the school year: pep rally. This night is known amongst older stu- dents for its chicken finger dinner, loud music, and cra- zily spirited moments in the Memorial Gym. However, everyone remembers the un- familiarity of his or her first pep rally, and the excitement and confusion that occur beforehand. When asked what she was most excited for, Lindsey Okafor (‘20) said, “I’m looking forward to watching my big sibling (Lindsay Garcia (‘15)) do her thing onstage.” And that’s exactly what the entire Dance Squad did. Dance Squad started the night off with a high-energy medley of hip-hop dances to popular rap songs. When asked about the rehearsal process, Captain Alex O’Neal (‘16) said, “We work really hard to make sure ev- erything looks perfect; even though we complain some- times, it’s all worth it when we perform.” D-Squad ended their performance in their usual fashion: with a popular line dance joined by Jimmy Lemkemeier, Student Body President, and M. J. Strawbridge, Chief Justice. Before the performance, Jimmy expressed his con- cern about doing the Dlow Shuffle on stage in front of the entire school, saying “I’m confident it’s going to be bad.” Regardless of Jimmy’s dancing ability, the entire school embraced the funny performance, espe- cially the grand finale, when Jimmy did a literal trust fall into the crowd. In addition to the dances, cheers, and speeches from all of the Varsity team captains, Mr. Abbott got all of the sports teams excited for their contests the next day. Varsity Field Hockey Captain Lily Katzman (‘16) expressed her excitement about speaking at pep rally for the first time, then said, “Despite the mics being dif- ficult to hear, I loved all the energy the seniors brought to the school. You could tell they were extremely passionate and proud to be Bombers.” In his popular annual speech, Mr. Ab- bott poked fun at all of the seniors who play fall sports, but also pumped everyone up for the games that were to take place the next day. This year, his jesting jabs included calling out Michael Peters (‘15) for his “nasty serve and nastier comb- over,” and asking Zane Nor- ton and Liz Jackson (‘15) if they had ever met. The cheerleaders also sparkled this year, and not just because of the excessive amount of body glitter. In addition to doing the classic cheers that we hear at foot- ball games, the cheerleaders broke out some that they only perform for pep rally, including the Three-Stomp and Battle Cry. Before the performance, Captain Darcy Shulman (‘15) said, “My favorite part is the three stomp thing. It’s cool and everybody gets excited and pumped and ready to go. #bombsquad.” Darcy also expressed her excitement for the performance since the cheerleaders had been working on their dances and stunts since mid-August. After the performance, Captain Sandy Chesterton (‘15) said, “I’m so proud of the squad. Everyone worked really hard and I can’t wait to cheer Burroughs on at the game!” Their hard work paid off: everyone left the pep rally excited and ready for the bonfire. Right after pep rally, the entire Burroughs community flooded out of the Memorial Gym and gathered around as the Class of 2015 lit the bonfire, something that they had been waiting to do since their first bonfire five years ago. One of our own students mused about the experience, stating that “it represents a culmination of their time at Burroughs as they move from the outer peripheries of the circle of supporters into the flame that composes its heart.” Whether this person was be- ing facetious or not we will never know, but even the youngest students under- stand the significance of this moment for the seniors. The entire night left every Burroughs heart filled to the brim with bomb pride. Upon leaving the bonfire, Ben Remis (‘18) stated trium- phantly, “I’m really excited to be a Bomber,” and Josh Worsham (‘18) summed up his first pep rally in the simplest yet most powerful way possible: “Amazing. For as long as we can remember, Burroughs has produced only the most “tasteful” propaganda illuminating the intellectual deficien-cies of homogenous and extremely affluent MICDS students. We have the well-established stereotype of Chad IV, a buff, pinheaded youth with a blond, voluptuous mother who is only about two decades older than he is.

On the other hand, when we speculate about the caricature of a John Burroughs Student, a nerdy, multiracial liberal comes to mind, which does not sound demeaning in the least. To get the inside scoop on the external perspective of John Burroughs students, I interviewed a real MICDS student. I had hoped that this interview would help to break down the stereotypes that persist in our community, but I was excessively optomistic. To protect his privacy, the student has vol-untarily adopted the alias “Chad IV.” When I told Chad IV about the Chad IV stereotype, his response was “that’s mostly accurate.” Also unsurprisingly, when I asked how MICDS students stereotyped Burroughs ones, he informed me “there is the assumption that you guys are smart,” “mostly bespectacled,” and “ like, super-liberal.” However, propaganda at the Country Day School primarily consists of “under the radar, indirect references to you guys having a suckier sports team.” “We also think your facilities are quite inferior,” Chad said. He also informed me that due to school prohibitions on direct insults, MICDS comedic protégées are forced to rely on “the art of innuendo,” making such subtle references as “TSA, diffuse the Bombers” and “Blast the Bombers.” Finally, Chad IV said that “We often have videos in which we make some mild reference to how the Bombers can’t win at something.” I guess that MICDS doesn’t count the last three years of football as winning.

Confessions of a Mickey D’s studentAn interview with an actual MICDS student

“God made Micky D’s… we all make mistakes,” Mr. Abbott declared during pep rally on Friday. This unprovoked assault is baseless and, frankly, not in good taste. “Look, I know it’s not the best for you, but a word as strong as ‘mis-take’ should be reserved for Burger King and Wendy’s,” Jeremy says in indigna-tion. Liam understands Abbott’s point of view but can’t get past the fact that “it’s sooooo good”. Rabbi Goldenbergstein assured Darcy that the Torah makes no mention of McDonald’s, to which Darcy responded “It’s good to hear that Moses didn’t schlep along a commandment from Mount Sinai instructing ‘Thou shall not indulge thyself in McProducts™’”. It’s out of character for Mr. Abbott to be so closed-minded and hostile towards something so innocent and virtuous as a fast food chain. By and by, the Backpage wishes that instead of focusing on McDon-ald’s, we should really be concentrating on our rivalry against MICDS during pep rally weekend.

This past weekend the John Burroughs Bombers traveled down to MICDS looking for redemption after a tough loss to Lutheran North last week. After holding the Rams score-less last year, they had a chip on their shoulder, hoping to make up for the blowout loss

last year. The Bombers had won 3 out of the past 4 games against the Rams and hoped to keep their streak alive after the weekend. Though it is usually our outstanding offense that leads them to victory each week, the Burroughs defense made some critical plays to secure a win this past weekend. One of these plays came from one of our own linemen, Michael Peters (’15), who fell on a loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown to help the Bombers jump out to a 14-0 lead. The defense also only allowed a total of 6 points for the Rams, with their only score coming from an 80 yard touchdown run by senior Cole Sigmund. The Bombers quickly made up for the score by breaking through the line to block the extra point and keep the game in their favor. Without the defense playing so well, this game may have played out a little differently. With the Bombers offense taking a backseat to the defense during this important matchup, they still managed to keep rolling and making their lead over the Rams even more substantial. Running back John Moten (’15), who averaged almost 8 yards a carry during the game, had touchdown runs of both 52 and 36 yards to lead both sides in rushing. Quarterback Tre Moore (’15) threw for 110 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 21 yard pass to Ronald Smith (’16) to start the scor-ing, with a 64% completion rate for the day. The Bombers had quite the day against the Rams, managing to hold them to only 6 points while scoring 42 of their own. Burroughs had a tremendous day on both sides of the balls and looks to continue to improve for the rest of their sea-son. With this win, the football team improves to a record of 5-1 and hopes to continue to play this high level of football.
