Since so many people are gearing up this week for the February 21st Mardi Gras celebration, Tidbits has decided to “laissez les bons temps rouler” (let the good times roll) and join in the fun! Follow along as we look into what makes this annual gathering so special and why it is thought of as one of the most festive events in the world.• Mardi Gras is celebrated in many different

countries, including Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, and Sweden. While specific customs and traditions may vary from country to country, they all center around the same basic theme of parades and parties. Lots of parades and parties. For most of us in the U.S., the term Mardi Gras is synonymous with colorful processions and raucous all-night soirees on the streets, alleys, bars and balconies of New Orleans.

• Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday,” the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which begins the Christian season of Lent. It is also the last day of the Carnival season. “Carnival” season is a period of feasting and fun that always begins on January 6, which in Christianity is the Feast of Epiphany, following the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” (Got all that?) While mostly celebrated in areas where Roman Catholicism is predominant, Epiphany is celebrated in other churches as well.

area in 1893, later called Grand Canyon Game Preserve in 1906, and then named a National Monument in 1908, this wonder work of nature was destined for global greatness regardless of the title ascribed to it. But soon after the U.S. government established the National Park Service, the Grand Canyon area was given National Park status in 1919.

• Encompassing 1,218,375 acres of northern Arizona, Grand Canyon National Park is listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. At 277 miles in length, the mammoth canyon is over 6,000 feet deep in most places -- more than a mile from top to bottom! -- and ranges from four to eighteen miles in width. The Park is famous worldwide, hosting some 5 million visitors per year. It boasts even greater attendance than America’s first National Park, Yellowstone.

• Great environmental variety exists in the Grand Canyon’s huge expanse of land. The elevation ranges from 1,200 feet near Lake Mead to 9,165 feet above sea level at the North Rim. Scientists have identified five life zones in the park: Lower Sonoran, Upper Sonoran, Transition, Canadian and Hudsonian. Think of it this way: You can see variations in the

ecosystem within Grand Canyon National Park that are similar to what you would see if you traveled from Mexico to Canada! From desert plants to mountain pines -- they’re all there. The temperature difference between the top of the North Rim to the canyon floor can vary as much as 35 degrees.

• While there are a number of lodging choices for visitors, there is only one lodging facility below the rim of the Grand Canyon. Phantom Ranch is only accessible by hiking or mule trip and for hardy travelers who want to see more than the rim. The rustic architecture of

weeks before Mardi Gras, but the largest and probably most famous of them happen on the last weekend before and through Mardi Gras day. There are about a dozen held in New Orleans that day, with even more in the suburbs.

• Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday and Lent are all important times for Catholics. Ash Wednesday is the first of 40 days (excluding Sundays) prior to Easter that make up Lent. Lent is a time of preparation for Easter, when the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is celebrated.

• Another term used for Mardi Gras is “Shrove Tuesday.” Shrove is the past tense of “to shrive” and means “to go to or make confession.” Today, Mardi Gras is better known as the day to party. But in New Orleans, when the clock strikes midnight, the observance of Lent officially starts, and the party ends. At that time, teams of mounted police lead caravans of motorized sweepers, clearing the streets of revelers and cleaning the city.

• Historians believe that French explorers Iberville and Bienville held the first American Mardi Gras on March 3, 1699. After a very difficult journey down the Mississippi River, they landed about 60 miles south of where New Orleans is today. They had a small celebration and named the area “Pointe due Mardi Gras.” Bienville also established “Fort Louis de la Louisiane,” which later became Mobile, Alabama. Many say that the first official Mardi Gras was held in Mobile in 1702.

• For many years, New Orleans and other French settlements of the South marked the Mardi Gras holiday with street parties, masked balls and lavish meals. When the Spanish took control of New Orleans, they abolished the rowdy celebrations. The bans were in force

until Louisiana became a state in 1812. • Secret societies or clubs, called krewes,

began to form as early as 1781. The first was the Perseverance Benevolent & Mutual Aid Association. Krewes started the parades as we know them today and still keep them going. The krewes are private, non-profit organizations whose members plan and pay for their parades, costumes, throws and more. There are no sponsorships or city funds used.

• By the late 1830s, people wearing masks and other disguises would gather into processions and ride through town on carriages and horseback. Eventually, newspapers started making advance announcements of these Mardi Gras events, producing even more interest and bolder costumes.

• On February 24, 1857, the Mistick Krewe of Comus, a secret society of businessmen, organized a torch-lit procession with rolling floats and marching bands. This bold breakthrough began the elaborate parade traditions that exist Today. There are now more than 50 such parades in the Greater New Orleans area.

• The early parades were followed by a ball for the krewe and their guests. Today the elaborate, invitation-only balls for the many krewes begin when Carnival Season starts on January 6. Each krewe elects a king and queen and their court. They wear masks and are never officially revealed, with the exception of Rex, who as the King of Carnival, is revealed the day before the parade.

• The Krewe of Rex, organized in 1872 by a group of businessmen, came up with the idea to have a King of Carnival. They held the first parade during the daytime. This krewe introduced the Mardi Gras song (“If Ever I Cease to Love”), the flag and the colors of purple, green and gold. Official meaning was assigned to the colors in 1892: Purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power.

• While most parades require crowds to simply watch and applaud when floats pass, Mardi Gras crowds work hard to catch “throws.” This tradition started in 1871. The most popular throws are beads, plastic cups and doubloons. Doubloons are aluminum medallions, like large coins, that depict the parade theme on one side and the krewe’s emblem on the other. The first medallions appeared in 1884, with the Krewe of Rex, and the start of doubloons like those

given out today started in 1960 also with Rex. • The actual name for the Krewe of Rex is the

School of Design. Rex, the King of Carnival, arrives by a boat that crosses the Mississippi River on the night before Mardi Gras. When

German celebrations include parades, costume balls and a tradition of women cutting off men’s neckties. In Denmark, Fastevlan is similar to America’s Halloween.

• The Fred Harvey Company started working on structures in the park in the early 1900s. When the Grand Canyon Railway, an extension of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, was brought to the South Rim of the canyon in 1901, housing for visiting guests was needed. The Fred Harvey Company, working with a railroad architect, built the El Tovar Hotel 20 feet from the edge of the South Rim in 1905. The beautiful, rugged building is sometimes called “the most expensively constructed and appointed log house in America.” It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

• John Wesley Powell, a Civil War hero and geology professor, recorded the geology and geography of the Green and Colorado Rivers and the Grand Canyon after two historic trips in 1869 and 1871. His trips opened up new interest and provided much information for the future with his mapping of the wild Grand Canyon area.

• The Grand Canyon is a magnificent place for both a family vacation and studying nature. The Colorado River and canyon walls are full of scientific evidence about the history of the

Sonoran Desert. The saguaro (pronounced suh-wah-ro) is the world’s largest cactus. • The Sonoran Desert covers 120,000 square

miles in southwestern Arizona, southeastern California, most of Baja California and the western half of Sonora, Mexico. Saguaros grow exclusively in the Sonoran Desert, but not all areas of the Sonoran have the plants. Since saguaros are not hardy enough to survive freezing temperatures, they generally do not grow in elevations above 4,000 feet.

• Saguaros are found in southern Arizona and western Sonora, Mexico. A few stray saguaros may be found in southeast California. Most of these giants are near Tucson, Arizona. There are approximately 1.6 million saguaro cacti plants growing within Saguaro National Park, which is divided into two districts east and west of Tucson.

• Saguaro cacti can grow up to 60 feet tall and weigh as much as an elephant! These desert

giants can live to be about 200 years old. The plants do not sprout their arms, or branches, until they are about 70 years old. While some saguaros never grow branches, some can be found with as many as 25 arms.

• Saguaros have white flowers that bloom in late spring and red fruit in the summer. The cactus blossoms are the official state flower of Arizona.

• These fascinating giants provide food and shelter for many animals. Some that may be found high in the branches of saguaros are bats, birds and owls. Harris’ hawks and cactus wrens love the saguaro.

• Gila woodpeckers use their strong beaks to hollow out nest holes in the stems of the saguaro cactus. The holes dry out to form a scab that becomes a safe, dry, and cool place for eggs to hatch and baby birds to grow.

• When gila woodpeckers abandon their nests, tiny elf owls move in. The world’s smallest owls, at about 5 inches long, make the world’s largest cactus their home. They hide in the daytime and search for insects, spiders and small lizards at night.

• While the flying critters on a saguaro may not seem too threatening, the crawling critters that live in or near the base are another story. The desert scorpion and desert tarantula are two that hide under rocks and in grasses nearby.

• Two types of rats, wood rats and kangaroo rats, build nests in the ground around saguaros. Wood rats eat cactus flesh, which is poisonous to most animals. They have strong stomachs that allow them to break down and assimilate the poisons. Kangaroo rats have strong back legs that allow them to hop across the hot desert soil quickly.

• Giant saguaros are also home to several kinds of reptiles, including diamondback rattlesnakes. These snakes can be as long as eight feet and have poisonous, deadly bites.

• One of the few lizards of the world that has a poisonous bite, the gila monster, also lives near saguaro cacti. This desert creature hunts small mammals, birds and their eggs, and other lizards. Gila monsters have bright orange and black patterns on their scaly skin and can grow up to two feet in length.

• Space does not allow a listing of all the other critters that live in, on or near saguaros. When you see a large saguaro cactus and are tempted to stand close for a great photo shot, you might want to think again. Could be it’s better to take those photos from a distance! ■

A: Julianne does indeed star as the 2008 vice-presidential hopeful in the HBO movie “Game Change,” which is based on the 2010 book of the same name. The movie pre-mieres on Saturday, March 10, and also stars Ed Harris as Sen. John McCain and Woody Harrelson as campaign chair Steve Schmidt, along with Peter Mac-Nicol, Sarah Paulson and Ron Livingston. The movie will mainly track the actions of the Republican Party during the 2008 elections, while the book devotes equal time to both Republicans and Democrats. ***

Q: I got completely hooked on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” and I can’t wait until it re-turns for its second season. Would you know when that might be? -- Brad F., via e-mail

A: Well, Brad, I just happen to have that little nugget of info -- and I am willing to share. The

next season of the medieval-fantasy series begins (no fooling) April 1 at 9 p.m., and like the first sea-son, the second season will be 10 episodes long. And Lena Headey (who plays Ceresei) tells us that sea-son two will bring even more drama (Is that possi-ble?). The show also stars Peter Dinklage as Tyrion, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys, Nikolai Coster-Waldau as Jaime, Kit Harington as Jon and Michelle Fairley as Catelyn. ***

Q: I’m confused: First I heard Marg Helgenberger is leaving “CSI” for good, then I heard she’s not, and now I hear she is again. Can you clear this up for me? -- Constance D., Newport, Conn.

A: I’ll try. Marg, who left the top-rat-ed CBS crime drama at the end of January, is pretty much gone -- as a regular castmember. However, her character’s future has been left open so Marg can return for a guest appear-ance, if she wishes. Marg assures her fans that they haven’t seen the last of Catherine Willows: “That was one of the reasons why it was a little easier for me to leave the show, because the producers said to me practically every day that the door is wide open. If I’m available and I’m up for it, you betcha.” ***

A: Hang in there just a few more months, Darla! Sunday, April 1 marks the return of the sus-pense drama to AMC with a two-hour premiere start-ing at 8/7c. Get Paid for Driving Fewer Miles Today’s first great reader tip reminds me that I need to call my auto insurance agent. As of the first of this year, my daily 30-mile commute dropped to fewer than five when we moved our office closer to home. This should result in a nice reduction in my annual premium. I’ll let you know how that turns out. In the meantime, perhaps this great tip from one of our readers will trigger some driving changes of your own:

COLLEGE STUDENT AUTO INSURANCE. Our insurance company gives us their “Student Away at College” rate because my son attends college across the country and does not take his car to school. This reduced our premium significantly, while still allowing him to be insured if he drives a car while at school and when he comes home on break. We can easily reinstate full cover-age while he’s home for the summer. -- Autumn, Oregon HOP ON THE BUS. My husband started taking the bus to work, and we sold our second car. The car was old and paid off, but with maintenance, gas, licensing, registration and insurance, it was costing us almost $1,700 a year. His work provides a discounted monthly bus pass that is $20 a month. With this new arrangement, we figure we’re saving more than $1,460 a year. -- Roseanne, Washington

RULES FOR SNACKING. My sister solved the dilemma of coming home from work and finding her teenage sons had eaten some of the ingredients for dinner. She started packaging leftovers and snacks in one-cup containers. The rule was that only food in the containers could be eaten for snacks. Though I’m single, I adopted this, and now I find I use up left-overs more efficiently. -- Kate, Oklahoma LIGHTBULB LIFESPAN. I have a stockpile of three-way lightbulbs that I purchased on clearance. The setting I use most often, usually the top or middle, burns out soonest. But the lowest setting, 50 or 70 watt, still works. I take the used bulb, wrap it in newspaper and write the useable wattage on the paper. Then when I need a fixed watt bulb at that wattage, I use it in that fixture. This saves me quite a bit of money. As I run out of three-way bulbs, I replace them with energy-saving fluorescents. -- Juli, California

FRAGRANT TO THE LAST DROP. When my votive candles burn down or other candles get really low and won’t stay lit, I put the wax in an old candle jar, place the jar on a mug warmer for coffee and plug it in. I heat only one scent at a time so I can enjoy the last of each fragrance. -- Pam, Illinois

BLUE RACKS. I left my oven racks in the oven the last time it was cleaned. They came out clean, but with a bluish tint. I noticed that TV’s Food Network star The Barefoot Contessa had blue oven racks, too. So, who cares what color they are as long as they are clean and not damaged. -- Char, Illinois

Overcrowded Nest Syndrome A lot of parents worry about empty nest syn-drome: the depression, the boredom, the creeping quiet, the lonely nights and empty weekends. But the following “parents” know something far worse: Overcrowded nest syndrome. “Our three dogs are our babies; no human kids. Boomer is one of our three dogs (all with some pit bull heritage), and we adopted him from a no-kill shel-ter when he was 6 months old. He is 6 years old now. He is the second dog of our three-dog household. Lexi, his 7-year-old sister and our first dog, was a stray when we took her in. Boomer followed a couple of months later. Santos, his 8-year-old brother and the third dog that joined the household, was a fully trained Protec-tion Sports Association (PSA) national champion who was retired by his trainer. “Boomer is a mellow dog. He is closest to me, always following me wherever I go. My dad dubbed him my ‘guardian angel’ as a testament to what he does on a daily basis. We lived peacefully together for more than a year. We were responsible owners, putting them through obedience classes, socializing them at dog parks and taking them for walks around the neigh-borhood. “Despite that, during Boomer’s terrible 2s, he developed aggression issues toward other dogs. Boomer started barking at animals he saw outside the window or on TV. We tried to resolve his aggression by sending him to a month-long live-in boot camp. He got along with his brother and sister for a few more years, and we thought the aggression issue was under control. “Then one day, he went after Santos, trying to gain position at the door and leaving puncture wounds in the process. In the past four years, there have been three more ‘incidents’ between Boomer and Santos. (Lexi stays out of it.) Boomer bit me during one of them, and my husband was injured on a separate oc-casion. We sent him to another live-in boot camp with a local dog trainer. “We have been keeping Santos and Boomer physically separated using dog gates for the past three years, and there were no more incidents -- until re-cently. Santos was sleeping in our bathroom with a dog gate separating him from Boomer and Lexi, who were sleeping in our bedroom. My husband woke up in the early morning and tripped over the dog gate. He started screaming. It was dark. Boomer bit him. I tried getting him off my husband, and he bit me on my leg.

“My husband takes responsibility for star-tling Boomer in the night and has no hatred toward him. None of us is fearful of Boomer. We are taking a few more precautions to make sure another incident doesn’t happen. But is there hope for his rehabilita-tion? Did boot camp make it worse?” I will preface my response with a note stress-ing that this situation, in a home with human chil-dren, would be unacceptable. That said... Sounds like boot camp made it better both times -- but temporarily. The problem with live-in boot camp is that it’s not for all problems. With dog-gie boot camp, you take the dog out of the home for training, and he, hopefully, returns home a better version of his former self. This is a home-based problem, and your best hope is a trainer who specializes in aggression and works with the dog in the home. Additionally, this is a dog whose aggressive tendencies are most likely genetic. So your goal is to control the behavior, not cure it. The aggression described in this letter can’t be cured, but it can be controlled. The presence of two other dogs makes consistent control more dif-ficult to achieve, but with professional guidance and due diligence on the part of the owners, this over-crowded nest has hope. Woof!

Aspirin Health Benefits a Matter of Risk Vs. Risk Aspirin, first developed as a painkiller almost a century ago, is still viewed by many as a miracle drug. While rarely prescribed for pain, aspirin’s ma-jor use is its effect on platelets. Aspirin prevents the formation in platelets of a molecule called thromboxane A2 that is essential for normal platelet aggregation. Platelets play a cen-tral role in stopping bleeding by first attaching to a bleeding wound, then aggregating together to form a plug. Coagulated plasma and red cells combine with the platelet plug to form a blood clot. While essential to stop bleeding, platelets can cause harm by aggregating in a blood vessel damaged by the deposition of cholesterol. This leads to a clot that either partially or completely blocks a blood vessel. This can occur in many areas of the body but is most serious when a coronary or cere-bral artery is blocked, leading to a heart attack or stroke. Studies in recent years indicate that taking as little as a baby aspirin (81 milligram) daily can interfere with platelet function sufficiently to prevent platelets from aggregating and reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke. Aspirin has other benefits, according to a study published in the journal Lancet. The study tracked more than 25,000 subjects taking aspirin for at least 20 years. The research suggested that aspi-rin decreases the risk of lung cancer by 30 percent, colon cancer by 40 percent and esophageal can-cer by as much as 60 percent. The National Can-cer Institute reports that aspirin may protect against breast and prostate cancer. Most experts believe that by inhibiting certain enzymes, aspirin decreases inflammation that in turn reduces the chance of cells transforming and becoming cancerous. Based on these observations, many health-care providers recommend that all adults take an 81-milligram aspirin daily in the hope of preventing heart attacks, strokes and cancer. Using a medica-tion to prevent an illness in otherwise healthy and asymptomatic individuals is referred to as primary prevention. To be effective, there must be a proven ben-efit that outweighs any potential side effects. Good examples of primary prevention are the addition of

fluoride to water to reduce the risk of tooth decay and cavities as well as the fortification of flour and cere-als with iron to reduce the risk of anemia due to iron deficiency. Thanks to these preventive public-health approaches, tooth decay and iron deficiency have become quite rare. And in these two examples, the adverse effects are insignificant enough to make the approach valuable. But is primary prevention of using aspirin worthwhile? First, it must significantly lower the risk of disease, and second, it should have virtually no risk. Unfortunately, research just published in the Ar-chives of Internal Medicine showed that aspirin does not reduce the risk of death from heart attack, stroke or cancer in otherwise healthy people. In this study, more than 100,000 healthy sub-jects with no risk factors of vascular disease were divided into two groups, either receiving aspirin or a placebo. After a follow-up period of six years, there were 1,500 nonfatal and 500 fatal heart attacks and an equal number of fatal and nonfatal strokes. The only benefit of aspirin was a 10 percent reduction in the number of nonfatal heart attacks. Particularly worrisome was a 31 percent increase in the risk of life-threatening bleeding from the stomach. Now experts are saying that healthy people should not take aspirin, as the side effects lead to more problems than they prevent. Its use in the pre-vention of cancer is now also in question. This does not mean that aspirin should no longer be prescribed for anyone. The information is watertight that aspirin prevents second heart attacks and strokes. Aspirin should also be used in people at high risk of disease, including anybody over the age of 60, smokers and those with diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol or proven evidence of vascular disease. Using aspirin to prevent illness in such people is referred to as secondary prevention and its use in those with disease and illness is re-ferred to as tertiary prevention. Always consult your physician before start-ing or stopping any treatment including aspirin. Be aware of the risk factors of heart disease and stroke and if needed, aspirin still remains a valuable and effective medication in high-risk individuals.

Don’t Base Critical Decisions on Prophets of Doom Q: I’m about to turn 66. I want to put off starting my Social Security until age 70 be-cause if I do, I’ll get an extra $600 or so per month in a delayed retirement bonus added to by Social Security checks. But my husband said I should take my Social Security now be-cause he doesn’t think Social Security will even be there in another four years. So should I take it now or wait until age 70?

A: Before I answer your question, let me suggest that you guys better sell all your earthly pos-sessions and move into a cave because I read some-where on the Internet that the world is going to end in the next couple of weeks! Dumb idea, right? Well, no offense, but so is your husband’s ... or, let me clarify that: He might have the right plan for you, but he’s suggesting it for the wrong reason. I have worked on Social Security issues for 40 years now, and for 40 years, people have been pre-dicting the program’s imminent demise. Social Secu-rity is not going away. It will change. It has changed a lot in the last 75 years, and it will undoubtedly change in the next 75 years. And if there are reforms in the next couple of years, those reforms will not impact people like you. Major changes to the program, such as an increase in the retirement age, are phased in over decades. If the retirement age goes up to 68, for example, that change will impact our kids and grandkids, but not old geezers like you and me. So you should make your decisions based on the Social Security program we have today, not on your husband’s nebulous predictions for the future of the program. And now the question is this: Should you take Social Security at age 66 or wait until 70? I can answer that question if you can answer this question: When are you going to die? Because no one really knows the answer to that question, no one really knows the optimal time to start his or her Social Se-curity. Making that decision is a gamble we all take. Personally, I would start benefits now, just because I’m the kind of person who wants to spend my money while I’m still young enough to enjoy it. But any good financial planner would probably ad-vise you to wait until age 70 because statistically, there’s a good chance that you’ll live long enough getting the higher age-70 rate to make up for the money you’d lose by not taking your Social Security now. You do have another strategy. Assuming your husband is already getting Social Security and because you’re 66 years old, you could take a wife’s benefit on his record now. You’d get 50 percent of his rate. You could do that until age 70 and then switch to your own Social Security and get that $600 bonus you mentioned. Finally, here’s one other thought. On the same day I got your email, I also heard from a wom-an who told me her 69-year-old husband just died. He had insisted on waiting until 70 to get his highest Social Security, and he died a few months before that date. She asked about what happens to all the money he’d paid in. (Because she has a very high retirement benefit on her own record, she isn’t due any widow’s

benefits from him.) And the answer is that it’s gone -- or more correctly, it’s paying for someone else’s So-cial Security checks. Something to think about!

Q: In a recent column, you said that illegal immigrants are not eligible for Social Se-curity. While this is true, you were wrong when you said that only U.S. citizens or people liv-ing in this country legally are eligible for Social Security benefits. There are instances where non-U.S. citizens are receiving Social Security benefits while living overseas. Will you please correct this error?

A: You are right. In my attempt to emphati-cally debunk the ubiquitous lie being spread on the Internet that illegal immigrants are routinely getting Social Security benefits and ripping off American tax-payers, I painted my answer with too broad a brush. In fact, I have written many times in this col-umn about the fact that non-citizens may qualify for Social Security benefits and that in many cases, they can receive those benefits overseas. But these are folks who have legally earned those benefits. For ex-ample, I recently wrote about a Canadian citizen who lived and worked in the U.S. for about 30 years. She recently retired and moved to back to Canada, and her Social Security benefits followed her there. And as you pointed out to me in your email, there are also instances in which a foreign-born spouse of someone who has worked and paid Social Security taxes in the U.S. could receive those ben-efits while living overseas -- although in such cases, there are many restrictions to such payments. Just as one example, as a general rule, to get a Social Security dependent or survivor benefit out-side of this country, a spouse must have spent at least five years living in the U.S. Other conditions also ap-ply. I suggest anyone really interested in this topic read a pamphlet produced by the Social Security Administration called: “Your payments while outside the United States.” You can find it at www.SocialSe-curity.gov/pubs/10157.html. I can tell you that every time I write about this topic, my inbox is immediately flooded with emails that usually go something like this: “No wonder So-cial Security is going broke if we are sending all our Social Security tax dollars overseas.” That’s why I like to reassure my readers that only a very small percentage of total Social Security benefits -- less than one-tenth of 1 percent -- are sent overseas. And

then in the vast majority of those cases, the money is going to U.S. citizens who have moved outside the country. So now, back to the major point I was trying to make in the column you mentioned. People living in this country illegally do not qualify for Social Se-curity benefits.

Sciatica: Big Nerve Can Be Big Problem DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 78-year-old woman, and five months ago I came down with sciatica in my left leg underneath the but-tock. It’s very painful. I’d like to know if there is something that can be done. -- S.M.

ANSWER: The sciatic (sigh-ATTIC) nerve is the body’s longest and largest nerve. It springs from nerve rootlets that emerge from the spinal cord in the lower back. Those rootlets intertwine to form this big nerve. It travels from the back, through the buttocks and down the leg to the foot. Anything that presses on or irritates the nerve in its long course gives rise to sciatica (sigh-ATTIC-uh), painful inflam-mation of the nerve. A bulging back disk can press on the nerve. Arthritic spurs on the spine are another source of ir-ritation. A collapse of a backbone from osteoporosis is another trigger for pain, and the pain can be in the lower back, the buttocks or down the leg to the foot.Have you tried Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain relief? Aleve, Advil, Motrin and the many other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs dull pain and quiet inflammation. Icing the painful back area for 10 to 15 minutes three times a day is another way to numb pain. If ice doesn’t work, turn to heat -- hot compress-es or a heating pad. Stretching the back might take pressure off the nerve. Sit on a firm chair with feet on the floor and knees shoulder-width apart. Turn slightly to the left. Then, with your right arm dangling down be-tween the knees and left arm dangling down on the outside of the left knee, bend down to the floor as far as you can and hold that position for five seconds. Straighten up and reverse the process by turning to your right and arranging your arms with the right arm outside the right knee and the left arm between the knees. If this exercise hurts, stop. If it doesn’t, perform five bends each, to the right and then to the left. Do the exercise three times a day. Five months is a long time to put up with back pain. I’m not sure if self-treatment will do much for you. You need a doctor’s intervention, along with physical therapy.

‘Get Smart’ Gadget Helps Caregivers Caregivers for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia will applaud a new gadget that can help keep track of those who might wander: a shoe with a tiny global positioning system (GPS) tracker in the heel. Footware company Aetrex and tracking software provider GTX have put a lot of thought into both the shoes and the tracking capability. The leather shoes, for either men or women, are either lace up or strap. They look very comfortable, and come with two removable layers for a better fit. There’s a grooved polyurethane sole for traction. But it’s not cheap. The shoes alone cost $300, and the GPS requires a connection plan that runs $35 a month. There are additional devices available to make your life easier if you care for a senior with Alzheimer’s or any other condition where constant monitoring is essential. Back in 2009, a tracker was created that also uses GPS. Called the i-Tag (www.i-tag.biz), the little device is the size of a nine-volt battery. It can be programmed with a “geofence” -- a set area that that you establish. If the wearer leaves that area, an alarm will sound. There also are locks that sound an alarm if a door is opened, alarm pads that sound an alarm if they’re stepped on and mini-cams that can help you keep an eye on a room from other parts of the house. There are a number of tools that will make it easier on those who care for dementia and Al-zheimer’s patients. It’s just a matter of finding what works best for your particular situation.

Mother-in-Law Problem Q: I am married to a man whose moth-er meddles into everything we do. She invites herself to spend the night and now even has her own house key. She interferes in things with our kids and even rearranges my cupboards. My husband’s reaction to my complaints is that he listens to her because she has been through a “tough life” and she only wants to help us. He always says he will talk to her about how I feel but never does. What advice can you give me in this situation? It’s to the point that I am seriously ready to just pack up and leave.

A: The critical issue is to make it clear to both your husband and his mother that she is not your mother. You and she have a completely differ-ent relationship. Among other things, you and your mother-in-law are battling for your husband’s affec-tion, household control and her grandchildren. It is apparent she is a lonely person and unwilling to un-tie the apron strings to let her son go. From what I can gather from your description of things, it sounds very much like your husband was either an only child, or at least his mother’s only son. When you marry someone you’re also mar-rying your spouse’s family, and it’s not always the most ideal fit. Often, couples don’t have a chance to really get to know their future in-laws until after the fact and, as in your case, it’s not always a pleasant surprise. Further, the personality of each partner has been formed by their household upbringing, their likes, dislikes, religious beliefs, habits, and myriad other influences. It often takes years before all of these traits are revealed. In reality, the chances that your mother-in-law will change her ways are slim to none. How then can you remedy your situation? This can only hap-pen by both you and your husband agreeing to set new boundaries for his mother, and letting him know you are serious about leaving if this is not resolved. Once you and he have this understanding, it is up to him to have a serious talk with her explaining that her behavior and meddling is placing his mar-riage in serious jeopardy. Chances are, she has no idea of the seriousness of the conflict she is causing. The two of you then need to meet with her with the assurance that you are not rejecting her, but that you are adults with your own family and a need and a right to your privacy. Your new boundaries may include changing your locks, allowing no visits un-less invited, and the mandate that she not interfere with the way you are raising her grandchildren. Disarm yourself of any guilt, unhappy experi-ences, and prejudices you may be harboring. Clear the air so that you and your mother-in-law can com-promise and begin a new and positive relationship.

Q: We have two grandsons; one has a happy disposition, the other does not. As a

family, our visits are often not pleasant as the teenagers argue and fight constantly, which cre-ates tension for all of us. The boy with the bad attitude is the problem. We want to enjoy our family times together, but this conflict spoils it. What can we do to change his attitude?

A: It is impossible to change another per-son’s attitude. We choose our attitudes and we are the only ones who can change it. The decision must come from within ourselves, and from no one else. There are no doubt underlying reasons why your grandson has adopted his negative attitude and behavior. Jealousy, competing for attention and oth-er factors could be a cause. Professional counseling could bring these factors to the forefront and be posi-tively dealt with. Sadly, a negative attitude becomes ingrained as the dominant part of our personality. At his young age, now is the crucial time to deal with it before it’s permanently rooted, and the sooner the better. Dealing with teenagers requires a truck-load of patience. At age 13, when I was constantly complaining about my brother, my mother asked if I planned to continue with my bad attitude forever -- and live without any friends. I got the point!

Vigilantes were fairly common during the Gold Rush boom in San Francisco, and they were so well regarded that they took over the Democratic Party in the late 1850s, and some became active politicians.

● On Feb. 18, 1885, Mark Twain pub-lishes his famous and controversial novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” At the book’s heart is the journey of Huck and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, down the Mississippi River on a raft.

● On Feb. 13, 1915, The American Soci-ety of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is formed. ASCAP collects and distributes royalties for copyrighted musical works. Today, ASCAP reports that it distrib-utes more than $800 million in royalties an-nually to its members.

● On Feb. 14, 1929, Sir Alexander Flem-ing, a bacteriologist, discovers penicillin. Having left a plate of staphylococcus bacte-ria uncovered, Fleming noticed that a mold, similar to the kind found on bread, had fall-en on the culture and had killed many of the bacteria.

● On Feb. 15, 1933, president-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt escapes an assas-sination attempt. Deranged, unemployed brick layer Giuseppe Zangara shouted, “Too many people are starving!” and opened fire with six rounds. Zangara’s extreme ac-tion reflected the anger and frustration felt among many Americans during the Great Depression.

● On Feb. 17, 1966, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys rolls tape on the first take of “Good Vibrations.” Six months, four studios and $50,000 later, he finally completed his 3 minute, 39 second symphony, pieced to-gether from more than 90 hours of tape re-corded during literally hundreds of sessions.


Reverse Painted Lamp Made in Early 1900s Q: Enclosed is a photo of an electric lamp that belonged to my husband’s parents. It stands approximately 14 inches tall, has a re-verse-painted, dome-shaped, glass shade and a metal base. There is no manufacturer’s mark, and it is in excellent condition. I hope you can give me more information on our lamp.

A: Your lamp was made in the first quarter of the 20th century. There were many lamp manu-facturers who made similar lamps and didn’t mark them. The base is pot metal with a bronze finish. Your lamp would probably be worth $200 to $400.

Q: I have a porcelain teapot that is also a music box. The handle is in the shape of a young man in 18th century clothes and a top hat; the lid is in the shape of a woman, also in period clothes. The sides of the teapot are decorated with pastel flowers in relief. To turn on the music box, there is a key on the base. There is a metal-lic label with the words “Hand Painted -- Tilso -- Japan.” What is my teapot/music box worth?

A: Myriad porcelain decorative pieces have been imported to the U.S. from Japan in the mid 20th century that are marked “Tilso.” L. Batlin and Son formed an import company in New York City in 1913. The name, “Tilso,” was created using the first letters of his wife and daughter, Tillie and Sonia. The company closed in 1976. Most similar pieces are selling in the range of $25 to $50. * * *

Q: This mark is on the bottom of a por-celain teapot that I have. Written in the mark are the words “Hand Painted -- Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. -- 911” and a blue crown. The teapot has a white, swirled, raised design and is decorated with small purple violets and green leaves. There is gold trim on the handle, spout and finial. It is in perfect condition. What can you tell me about my teapot?

A: Lefton China made your teapot some-time between 1956 and 1967. Lefton China Co. was founded in Chicago in 1941 by George Lefton. The company imported much of their porcelain from Ja-pan. In 2005, it was sold to OMT Enterprises and the

company moved to California. Your teapot is an ex-ample of Lefton’s “Violet Chintz” pattern and “911” is the design number. There was a plethora of match-ing pieces. Its value would probably be $50 to $75.

Sand shots made simple Playing a shot from the sand can be anything but a day at the beach, but it doesn’t have to be a bad experience if you work on a few basic steps. The first thing to look for in the bunker is the firmness of the sand, and your footprints are the first clue. Shallow prints mean firm sand and a live-ly ball; deep prints mean soft sand and a cushioned hit needing more power. In order to control the distance the ball flies from the sand you must be aware of two things: Length of the swing: Tour players have what I call a “des-ignated swing area in the sand. For me, my hands are chest-high both in the backswing and the follow-through. You need to find a comfortable range of motion for the club to swing on every sand shot. Speed of the swing: Establish a consistent swing speed regard-less of the sand shot. Mine is al-ways a medium speed. The most important factor is the amount of sand between the clubface and the ball. Digging too deep or too thin produces disastrous results. Once you have established these elements, you can plug in a variety of clubs to control the dis-tance the ball flies from the sand.Short shots need a lob or a sand wedge; for longer shots go with a pitching or ap-proach wedge. Work on these techinques to find what works best for you and you’ll end up making those difficult sand shots a “day at the beach”.

Rex arrives, the Mayor of New Orleans ceremoniously presents him with the key to the city.

• One of the most popular and “different” parades held during Mardi Gras in New Orleans is put on by the Krewe of Zulu. This krewe started in the early 1900s, with their first official appearance as Zulus in 1909. The group started from a group of black men who belonged to a Benevolent Aid Society. These societies were the first forms of insurance in the black community where, for annual dues, members received financial help when sick and financial aid when needing to bury deceased members.

• Zulus made a distinct impression on Mardi Gras crowds in 1909 by being totally different. They wore raggedy pants and had a quartet singing in front and behind their king. The king wore a “lard can” crown and carried a “banana stalk” scepter.

• Another difference with the Zulu Parade is their unusual throws. Possibly as early as 1910, the krewe made their mark by throwing coconuts, known as “Golden Nuggets.” In the early years the coconuts were in their natural “hairy” state, but a few years later, the krewe started handing out beautifully painted and decorated coconuts.

• In 1988, the Louisiana Legislature passed a law dubbed the “Coconut Bill” that excluded liability for injuries arising from the Zulus tossing out coconuts in their parades. Louisiana is the only state where Mardi Gras is a legal holiday. ■
