November is here!

Yes, and the year is almost over. It‘s hard to

believe just how fast time is passing by.

What has been happening this week? Game

Design and Media students took a small

roadtrip to Helsinki to check out DigiExpo.

Entrance exams and an info event for high-

schoolers happened.

There was a flashmob in the main building.

If you didn‘t have the chance to check it out

live, you can find it on the Oscar Gala event

page on Facebook. That brings me to the next

point on the list: The Oscar Gala. An event

by Business students for supposedly anyone

even though nobody outside the event plan-

ning team seems to know what it‘s about.

While writing this editorial, not having been

to event myself yet, I can only hope it‘ll be

better than the Kyamk‘s Got Talent one last

year. Shouldn‘t be too hard to manage that.

I guess that is it. I hope you had a wonder-

ful week and make the best of the ghastly

weather conditions. They give you the chan-

ce to stay indoors and study or do other fun

things, like playing board games and getting

back in touch with your loved ones (honest-

ly, when was the last time you called your

grandma?).

In Finland, Halloween has mainly

been an excuse for a student par-

ty, but it is getting bigger every

year. It was great to see how the

event is in abroad. Irish people told

me that halloween is actually origi-

nally from Ireland which probably

explains a lot why it is such a big

event here. Even if halloween was

actually celebrated on the last day

of October, you were able to see

people dressed up in fancy costu-

mes two weeks before the actual

date.

During my taxi-trip, few days before

Halloween, the driver was telling

me that so far he had driven Batman

and Robin and to a party. He was

very excited and proud to tell me

all about halloween and how it was

created. So much that he wanted to

chat with me after he got me home.

I assume it is because Irish people

don’t want that foreigners think that only Guinness and

potatoes are made in Ireland.

Even though half of the girls were dressed up as catwomen

and half of the boys were zombies, luckily enough there were

some unpredictable costumes too. For example large group

of girls had decided to dress up like dalmatians and they had

made a big effort for their costume.

We had prepared for the trick and treaters them by buying

loads of chocolate. Unfortunately the children didn’t knock

our door, so now we are stuck with four bags of candies.

What a pity.

The timing of Halloween was perfect because it gave a

break from the school stress. Next weeks are going to be

really intense in the IT because most of the assignments

need to be done in the beginning of November. Even though

we have lot of tasks, most of them are quite interesting and

made with groups. It also hit me that there’s only one and

a half month before the Christmas holidays and I feel like I

haven’t done anything school related yet, so I feel actually

quite excited to start doing the assignments.

HELSINKI DIGI EXPO 2014

Digi Expo 2014 has been and gone

by the time you read this – so how

was it?

This year the expo seemed smal-

ler than ever, with Digi, Ski and

Board expos sharing the same hall.

Everything seemed to have been

squashed in more than ever before.

GoPro® cameras stand were de-

monstrating the DJI Phantom quad

copters next to their nearest com-

petitor AEE selling an almost iden-

tical looking camera offering with a

near identical quad copter system.

Although camera quad copters are

no longer new, they are constantly

developing and their popularity has

risen as the price has come down.

As has been happening for some ye-

ars now, the expo seems to be slowly

changing from an event to showcase

companies and their new and inno-

vative products, into a giant retail

5

outlet with less than desirable discounts on

any new gear. However, there were still bar-

gains to be had for those that were prepared to

seek them out or settle for last season’s stock.

Again, as has been the trend with the fairs

over the last few years, the larger section

was dedicated to games and the gaming

industry. Kouvola (and partly Kyamk) were

represented in this by the upcoming Blackland

Games. Other universities were represented

by their own technological offerings, and it is

a shame that Kyamk did not have their own

stand. All of the big names in consoles and ga-

ming were also there of course, with the likes of

EA Games, Playstation, Xbox, and Wii. The ga-

mes stands were the most popular and it was

sometimes hard to get near them as everyone

seemed to want to try out the latest releases.

Ski and Board Expo seems to have also stag-

nated in their offerings with really nothing new

to present. The regular travel companies were

present alongside equipment and clothing

manufacturers and retailers. I guess it is a sign

of the times that manufacturers are

not really coming out with anything

new and innovative in this field at

the moment.

Having said all this, many retailers

seemed to be doing quite brisk bu-

siness selling their wares. Visitors

seemed to be queuing to play the ga-

mes at the PS4 and Xbox stands and

then queuing again, at the retailers’

stands to buy the games.

This year there were approx. 48,000

visitors over the 3-day expo, which

is around 8,000 less than last year.

More than 50% of the visitors were

there for the gaming sector, and

about a third were mainly interested

in cameras and photography.

Maybe the way things are going for

this expo, we might see a Game

Expo, only time will tell.

Halloween is the holiday that has been celebrated all over

the world for almost six thousand years.

We take it for granted and don`t think about the history and

facts behind it. Why do we dress up like witches and ghosts,

what is the origin of this mysterious day? If you think that

you know everything about Halloween, this article might

be very interesting for you, because some of these facts are

quite surprising even for a bookworm and nerd.

Do you remember this game where you have to catch an

apple with your mouth? The symbolism behind this game is

very unexpected: it represents the fertility in the year ahead.

If you catch an apple while playing this game during the

Halloween night you will be soon blessed with a child. So

be aware! Don`t play this game if you don`t want unplanned

babies running in your house.

To see a witch on a Halloween night is not a problem if you

know what to do. The rules are simple: wear your clothes

inside out and then walk backwards. The chances that you

would see something interesting at midnight are high.

We all know that the colours associated with Halloween are

orange and black. In fact, according to a Celtic legend these

are the colours of death. That is why when man meets a

redhead woman on Halloween night he has to turn around

and go straight back home for his own good.

If you see wet sheets hanging in front of the fire on Hallo-

ween, don`t be surprised. These are the girls, trying to see

the faces and silhouettes of their future husbands in the

night. And do not, under any circumstances, interfere with

girls who are walking downstairs with a mirror in hands at

midnight in Halloween. This might be their last chance to

see their boyfriends‘ faces. Otherwise, they would haunt

you until your death and after, and nothing would save you

from these unmarried women with their cunning plans. You

will be just another innocent prey in their murderous hands.

Are you scared of spiders? Well, don`t be. According to a

legend, if you see a spider on Halloween it`s a good omen,

it means that the spirit of a loved one watches you.

Now, when you have learned all the necessary facts that you

might need in your future, here are some tips on how you

should celebrate this great holiday: on Wednesday before

Halloween go to the House of rock in the beautiful town

called Kouvola and meet all the crazy creatures that consider

themselves the students of Kyamk. Don`t be surprised, that

the students in there are quite extraordinary. Only there you

can find vampires, witches, pumpkins, ghosts, werewol-

ves and other supernatural souls dancing, drinking beer

and chatting all night. Scary? It should be. You won`t find

anything like that elsewhere else in the world. These people

know how to have a great time for sure.

Don`t wait for chocolates and candies on Halloween. Go

to the Kupla`s events and learn how party hard!

SAARA IKÄLÄINEN

Would you please introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m a 24-year-old designer-stylist student from Nummela.

How did you get to study here and do you enjoy your

studies at Kyamk?

After two years of art studies and working I decided to

apply to Kyamk and started my studies in January 2012.

After the first year I have started to enjoy my studies. I

have learned that I can modify my courses according to

my interests, so it’s more exciting and useful.

What would you like to do once you graduate?

After I graduate from Kyamk I would like to work as a

freelance illustrator or a textile designer. I would love to

illustrate children books. I would also like to study more;

maybe become an art teacher or just a crazy artist lady.

Your summer internship was at a magazine called

Kidd.O. How did you like it? What did you do there?

I really enjoyed my summer working at Kidd.O Magazine!

I did a lot of different kind of tasks. Mostly I wrote posts

to Kidd.O’s website about different stuff, usually related to

children’s clothing and products. I also did a lot of crafts

for example props from cardboard for a children’s fashion

show. For the magazine I got to illustrate a column.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I usually get my inspiration just somewhere from my

mind. I doodle all the time so I think my biggest inspira-

tion is just not to think too much. I love to draw fast and

just whatever feels the best. Sometimes I like to write

weird little stories so I might get some inspiration from

them also. And cute animals of course!

Do you sell your art? Will you be selling it at this year’s

Design Market?

Sometimes I sell my art if someone is interested. I’m going to

sell my paintings and drawings at this year Design Market.

What do you do when you are not drawing or studying?

What are your hobbies?

If I’m not drawing or studying I’m probably running, cle-

aning something or just lost in my thoughts.

Would you please tell us about the illustration that is

published with this article? What’s it about and how

did you choose it?

I chose this painting because I like to draw and paint fish

right now. I’m dreaming of these magical bright coloured

fish who speak to me and they are very happy and smile

a lot. Hopefully I’m going to find these someday!

Finally, would you please say something to our readers?

Remember to keep your eyes open you might find my

secret messages!

This movie is based on a best-selling novel „The maze runner“ by James Dashner.

A boy with his memory missing is delivered into a new environment full of young men

and boys, surviving in a giant, very dangerous maze, fending for themselves. We watch

him go through remembering bits and pieces of his life, fighting for himself and others and

running in the maze finding out it‘s secrets.

This first part of a trilogy introduces us to a spectre of characters, emotions and evil things.

Having read the books, it is hard to tell how I feel about it.

The colours in the movie and the ambience is pretty cool. The crazy intimidating maze

works perfectly and induces enough horror into the imaginative mind.

The cast is pretty good as well. No complaints of bad acting or irritation what-so-ever.

They delivered the emotions of the „run or die“ theme and kept true to their purpose.

The plot is interesting and keeps you entertained throughout the movie. Some pretty big

stuff is kept out of the movie, that has been a crucial and very important in the books, and

that makes me feel unsure of how they will continue it‘s adaptation.

All in all, I felt energised, excited and entertained. I felt the horror and the fight for their

young lives and I will continue to watch this trilogy as it continues on.

My recommendation is to most definitely read the books, and do go see this film!
