REFLECTIONS is the newsletter published by The Lutheran Home for the Aged Association-East, a not-for-profit organization, providing quality health care, housing and services for seniors. The Lutheran Home for the Aged Association-East does not discriminate in its employment practices or admissions to its facilities or programs of care because of a person’s sex, race, color, age, religious creed, national origin, military duty, marital status, veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or any other classification prohibited by law.

    The Gift of NEW LIFE

As we move closer to another springtime which includes the holy seasons of Lent and Easter, our thoughts focus on 3 aspects of NEW LIFE which God our Heavenly Father provides us:

    1. In NATURE. After another long, cold winter season, all of us look forward to NEW LIFE in God’s beautiful outdoors. Spring wildflowers, budding trees, green lawns, and sprouting gardens will be welcome sights. “Praise to the LORD, the Almighty, the King of Creation!” (LSB 790)

    2. In FAITH. Because of our sinful nature, the Bible reminds us we are all spiritually blind, dead and enemies of God without Him. The seasons of Lent

and Easter, however, will again remind us of the NEW LIFE we have in our Savior, Jesus Christ. Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection we have the assurance of forgiveness and new life through Him. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” II Cor. 5:17

    3. In ETERNITY. This will be NEW LIFE at its best. For those clothed in the white garments of Jesus’ blood and righteousness, “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Rev. 21:4.

God give us all NEW LIFE now and in eternity through His Son Jesus.

    A LETTER FROM DIANE

Dear Friends, As I reflect on another year that just ended and look at what 2019 has to offer, it is with heartfelt

appreciation that we say “Thank you” to the many faithful and devoted friends, volunteers, donors, congregations, staff members, residents and families who have shared their time, talents and gifts throughout this past year. Your generous commitment through this past year has truly been a blessing. John 15:5 “I am the vine, ye are the branches; he that abideth in Me and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without Me ye can do nothing.” “Let us then resolve at this first annual meeting of the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association that our work shall, by God’s grace, ever be a fruit in Christ, without whom we can do nothing. He is the Vine, we are the branches; only as we abide in Him and He in us can we hope to bring forth the fruits of Christian life and service….” Excerpt\LHAA-E First Annual Meeting. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, Iowa, Sunday July 21, 1946. Seventy-three years later we continue to commit the mission and ministry of the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association-East (LHAA-E), into God’s hands, so that the fruits of our faith in Christ will be carried out through the service programs at the Vinton and Davenport campuses. Although the focus of LHAA-E has evolved through time, the quest for our mission of “Quality Christian Care and Service” has prevailed. We are committed to the principle that each resident deserves dignity, understanding and love. We provide much more than a building to live in, more than nursing care, meals, laundry, housekeeping services, or even social activities– The way we respond to those entrusted to our care is what embodies our commitment to each individual and to our mission. By the grace of God and the on-going support of residents, families, staff, volunteers and friends, new and old; we look forward to 2019, and another year of “Providing Quality Christian Care and Service.” Blessings, Diane Gloede, COO

The staff and residents of the Lutheran Home Communities are proud to recognize Ron Elwick’s commitment to the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association– East organization. Ron Elwick has served on the Vinton Lutheran Home Trustee Committee since 2002 and has been an active member of the Board of Di-rectors for the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association– East since 2003. As an elected member of the Board of Directors, Ron has shown sin-cere dedication to the members of our Association; to our residents; to our employees; to his fellow directors; to all others who serve the mission of our Association and above all, our redeeming Lord, Jesus Christ, in whose name our Association carries

out its mission and ministry. Ron was serious about his responsibilities and obligations; and was diligent and conscientious in the pursuit of his duties for the good and welfare of those entrusted to his leadership. In addition to his passion for ensuring excellent care for the tenants, residents, and clients of the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association-East, Ron has also shared his time and talents in other ways for his community. As the owner of “Elwick Electric” Ron is well known by many in Vinton and the surrounding communities. Ron is an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton and has served his church in a multitude of ways. He and his wife, Judy, reside in Vinton where Ron serves on the city council and has for many years. After 17 years of dedicated Christian service, Ron has made the decision to relinquish his responsibilities as a Lutheran Home for the Aged Association– East Board Member and a Vinton Lutheran Home Trustee. We would like to extend our gratitude to Ron for his valued contributions to the mission and ministry of the Lutheran Home Communities.

Above: The residents and tenants had a wonderful time celebrating “The Journey to Christmas” at the annual 2018 Lutheran Home Christmas Parties. Loved ones of our residents and tenants were

invited to join the celebration. Lutheran Home employees were honored to serve them a full prime rib and bone-in ham dinner. Guests enjoyed reminiscing about Christmases past and many new

    Christmas memories were made.

Above: Guests filled the dining room of the Vinton Lutheran Home for the annual fundraising dinner. This year’s event was titled: “Chopsticks! An Experience in Asian Cuisine.”

Those in attendance had the opportunity to sample a wide variety of authentic Asian dishes, (chopstick usage optional!) while enjoying the atmosphere and some Asian history. 4

One good act leads to another. And the impact grows. Thanks to eligible members of Thrivent Financial, that’s what we’ve experienced through the Thrivent Choice® program.

We are pleased to announce that the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association– East has received $5,073 in 2018 through Thrivent Financial’s Thrivent Choice program. By directing Choice Dollars, eligible Thrivent members can recommend which nonprofit organizations they feel should receive charitable grant funding from Thrivent. Nationwide, over $43 million in funding was distributed to more than 31,000 enrolled churches and nonprofit organizations through the program in 2018.

If you have Choice Dollars available to direct, please consider directing to the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association– East to further the mission of “Providing Quality Christian Care.” Eligible Thrivent Financial members who have Choice Dollars available have until March 31, 2019, to direct any remaining 2018 Choice Dollars.

“Seeing our members have a say about how charitable dollars are given in their communities is so rewarding,” said Dan Newton, Financial Associate of Blairstown, who serves Benton County. Dan Newton can be reached at (319) 721-4033 or [email protected].

Go to www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice to learn more or call (800) 847-4836 and say “Thrivent Choice” after the prompt.

We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.

Part of providing “Quality Christian Care and Service” includes loving our neighbor as ourselves, for our Lord Jesus Christ stated, “And the King will answer them, Assuredly I say to you, Whatever you do to one of the least of my brethren, you do also to me.”- Matthew 25:40. The Lutheran Home Communities are blessed to have the assistance of many generous individuals who not only give financial support, but also provide their prayers, time, and talents in true Christ-like fashion to the well-being of the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association-East and those we serve. Our mission is greatly enhanced by these selfless volunteers!

The Lutheran Home for the Aged Association– East and it’s employees are unique in the world of senior support services and long term care. First and foremost, our mission of providing “Quality Christian Care and Service” extends beyond strict government regulations that are applicable to all long term care settings. Throughout 2019, we invite you to take a tour of what we have to offer. In the pages of each issue, a specific living accommodation or service will be highlighted. This initial feature of “Reflections” showcases The Lutheran Home Town Homes.
