The Felicitous Exchange There are many joyful moments serving at our Lutheran Homes, but of course there are many heartbreaking moments, too. All of us know people who are suffering in one form or another, sometimes greatly. We would gladly do anything we could to relieve their suffering. But here’s a sobering question: What if you could pick one resident to trade places with? Picture the resident you know who is suffering the most, and ask yourself, “Would I give up all the things I have that he doesn’t and let him enjoy them instead, and would I willingly take away all the sufferings that he is undergoing by enduring them in his place?” Of course, this is all just theoretical, since no one can actually trade places with anyone else as I have described. Remarkably enough, however, that’s just what Jesus did for us! St. Paul writes that “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus took our suffering, our sin and our death, and made it His own on the cross. In its place, He gave us His blessedness, His righteousness and His life, which is ours through faith in Him. This is what Martin Luther called the “Felicitous Exchange,” Jesus “trading places” with us and relieving our sufferings by enduring them on our behalf. When you see people suffering, especially at our Lutheran Homes, do what is in your power to care for them and relieve them. But take comfort in the knowledge that Jesus has actually suffered for them, and when their time of suffering is completed, if their trust is in Him, they will enter into the indescribable blessedness that He has prepared for them. RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

REFLECTIONS is the newsletter published by The Lutheran Home for the Aged Association-East, a not-for-profit organization, providing quality health care, housing and services for seniors. The Lutheran Home for the Aged Association-East does not discriminate in its employment practices or admissions to its facilities or programs of care because of a person’s sex, race, color, age, religious creed, national origin, military duty, marital status, veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or any other classification prohibited by law.

The Felicitous Exchange

There are many joyful moments serving at our Lutheran Homes, but of course there are many heartbreaking moments, too. St. Paul writes that

“For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). When you see people suffering, especially at

our Lutheran Homes, do what is in your power to care for them and relieve them. But take comfort in the knowledge that Jesus has actually suffered for them, and when their time of suffering is completed, if their trust is in Him, they will enter into the indescribable blessedness that He has prepared for them. A felicitous exchange indeed!

Dear Friends, As I reflect on another year just ended and look at what 2018 has to offer, I give thanks for the many faithful and devoted friends who have shared their time, talents and gifts. Our mission requires many people; volunteers, donors, congregations, staff members, and families! It is with heart-felt appreciation that we “Thank you” for your generous commitment through this past year in assisting with our Mission and Ministry throughout our Lutheran Home Communities in Vinton and Davenport. In reflecting back on 2017, it is clear that we have embraced many significant achievements. As in every past year, this one was not without exception, many lives were touched, relationships enriched and joys shared. Of course, we have had our share of challenges as well. The quest to deliver quality care is by far the greatest challenge we face. Many new rules and regulations have, and will be, placed upon our facilities and services. We are blessed with a board of directors and management staff who are innovative in sustaining our mission of “Providing Quality Christian Care” despite the numerous rules that impact how we are allowed to provide care. One of the highlights this past year was the completion of our new Memory Care Addition at our Davenport Campus. This new beautiful building is designed for two, 13-bed neighborhoods, specifically tailored to provide comfort and security in separate environments. Private resident suites, a living room, kitchenette, and dining room are featured in each neighborhood. A beauty shop, bathing spa and family lounges are available to all residents. An enclosed courtyard featuring a walkway with attractive landscaping is available for the residents’ enjoyment. With only a few suites left, applications for residency are being accepted. A critical component of our time and resources are spent in the recruitment and training of sufficient, qualified staff to care for those entrusted to us. We are fortunate to have a core group of staff members who are dedicated and committed to our mission. These individuals play a vital role in healing, sustaining and nurturing our residents as well as mentoring our newly hired employees. The spiritual life for our residents is one of the most important aspects in our Lutheran Home Communities and is an integral part of our overall program of care. We are blessed with dedicated Chaplains and Pastors in our communities who are committed to the spiritual well-being of our residents, families and staff. With your continued help, support and prayers, we are prepared to forge ahead in 2018, as we continue our passion of providing Christian care to the communities we serve. We are looking forward to the many relationships – residents, families, staff, volunteers and friends, new and old; that join us in sustaining our mission and ministry.

Blessings, Diane Gloede, COO

In Loving Memory...In Loving Memory...

The Vinton Lutheran Home Communities were blessed for 35 years with Ann

Kerkman’s talents and devotion to the residents she served. Ann worked for

many years as the VLH Dietary Director, and later as the office assistant at

the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association– East Corporate Office. Ann was

extremely passionate about all projects she took on, and a perfectionist at each

and every job. Her untimely death left an emptiness within the LHAA-E

communities, but her loyalty to this organization will be forever cherished.

May Ann’s memory live on in the work that each one of us does

as we strive to be as committed as she to the LHAA-E mission,

and the individuals we serve.

Legacies of GivingLegacies of Giving THE VINTON LUTHERAN HOME AUXILIARY

The Vinton Lutheran Home Auxiliary was established in 1973, “To organize and oversee fund-raising projects, the proceeds from which would be used to enhance and benefit the lives of the Home’s residents.” At that time, no one could have imagined the monumental effect their efforts would have on the residents, the Lutheran Home, or the community.

The Auxiliary’s many fund-raising events have provided countless life-improving enhancements for patients, tenants and residents. The dedicated efforts and unwavering support of this group has been inspirational and assisted us in carrying out our mission of “Providing Quality Christian Care.”

At the end of 2017, however, the members made the difficult decision to disband the formal Auxiliary organization while continuing to volunteer as needs arise. We thank each Auxiliary member from the bottom of our hearts, and pray that they realize the depth of our gratitude for all of their accomplishments.

THRIVENT FINANCIAL CHOICE PROGRAMS

We are pleased to announce that Lutheran Home for the Aged Association - East has received $3,015 in 2017 through Thrivent Financial’s Thrivent Choice® program. By directing Choice Dollars®, eligible Thrivent members can recommend which nonprofit organizations they feel should receive charitable grant funding from Thrivent. Nationwide, over $41 million in funding was distributed to more than

30,000 enrolled churches and nonprofit organizations through the program in 2017.

If you have Choice Dollars available to direct, please consider directing to the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association - East to further the mission of “Providing Quality Christian Care.” Eligible Thrivent Financial members who have been designated Choice Dollars during 2017 have until March 31, 2018, to direct them.

“Seeing our members have a say about how charitable dollars are given in their communities is so rewarding,” said Dan Newton, Financial Associate of Blairstown, who serves Benton County. Dan Newton can be reached at (319) 721-4033 or [email protected].

To learn more about Thrivent Choice, visit www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice. Or call Thrivent at (800) 847-4836, and say “Thrivent Choice” when prompted.

Flourishing FriendshipsFlourishing Friendships “As Chaplain of the Davenport Lutheran Home, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to observe many friendships grow and develop. Quite noticeably, these friendship circles are often formed around the nucleus of Loretta DeForest and Diane Hammill.” noted Pastor Neuendorf. The friendly nature of their personalities has established Loretta and Diane as the unofficial “welcoming committee” of the Davenport Lutheran Home. Their interactions with others are not exclusive or “clique-like.” They always make room for one more, generously befriending all who come to them. Loretta and Diane love to joke around, but far from being “inside jokes” that exclude others, their humor serves to draw new residents into the Lutheran Home family. Their offered friendship enriches all who come into contact with it. “Virtually every chapel service is attended by Diane and Loretta, who always bring friends along,” shared Pastor Neuendorf. “Though having experienced loss and sufferings in their lives, these women continue to demonstrate a Christian love for others. The real magic of it, however, is that the welcome they extend is not forced, but a natural result of genuine love and concern.”

Flourishing FriendshipsFlourishing Friendships

“I never would have guessed that I’d be a nurse at the Vinton Lutheran Home for as long as I have.” Eric Struve, L.P.N., stated. “I honestly thought that I would start here, get some experience under my belt, and move on.” This has not been the case, however, as Eric will soon begin his 9th year at The Lutheran Home. “The residents we serve become our friends,” Eric commented. “It’s rewarding to become familiar with their interests.” For instance, while chatting one day, 96 year old resident Clay Ash and Eric discovered a common bond. Both men are “farm boys” and they often reminisce about country living. From time to time Eric brings his farm dog, Berkly, to visit the residents. Clay especially enjoys these visits because, he too, had a favorite farm dog that used to help him herd his cattle. “Berkly knows where I live, and he always runs right down to my room,” Clay commented. “Eric’s a great guy. We love to pick on each other, but we really get along well!” exclaimed Clay. “If I need something done, he takes care of it right away! He’s an excellent nurse.” When Eric was asked what he enjoys most about his job he smiled and said: “There is nothing I enjoy more than ensuring that the residents are well cared for.” Eric’s compassionate approach promotes the LHAA-E mission of “Providing Quality Christian Care and Service.”

John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
