The 1981 Vancouver Island Regional Short Course Championship was supposed to be held in

Nanaimo but because of a strike by civic workers the meet was transferred to the Crystal Pool

in Victoria. Sixteen individual records and five relay records were broken on the February

14th

weekend. VASC record breakers were Sandy Barrett, Wayne Kelly, Bill Winram, Wayne

Bonsdorf, Connie Schultz and Tanya Marquardt. VASC age group aggregate winners were

Rosemaire Neroutsos (girls 9-10), Wayne Bonsdorf (boys 13-14) and Wayne Kelly (boys 15-

17).

Three members of the VASC were selected to the age group (11-12, 13-14) provincial squad

and competed in a BC – Alberta dual meet in Calgary March 7th

1981. Selections for the team

were based upon results at the BC Short Course Championships held at the Crystal Pool

February 21st. Sandi Barrett two gold, two bronze(11-12 girls), Dean Lindall one gold, three

silver, one bronze (11-12 boys) and Wayne Bonsdorf one silver, three bronze (13-14 boys) of

the VASC were chosen to the team.

Annual Elementary School Championships held

VASC hosted, 315 swimmers from 41 western clubs, at the Western Junior National

Championship at Crystal Pool on March 17 1982. VicO entered 23 swimmers, 13 men and 10

women. The club finished 1st overall in the country (last year the club finished 5th

or 11th

).

Tanya Marquartdt, a 16 year old Mt Doug student, finished 1st in the 100 freestyle, 3

rd in the

50 freestyle and 4th

in the 200 freestyle. Lynda Kimmons, a 16 year old Reynolds

student,finished 1st in the 200 breaststroke and 2

nd in the 100 breaststroke. Connie Schultze, a

15 year old Arbutus student, finished 1st in the 100 breaststroke, 2

nd in the 200 breaststroke

and 5th

in the 50 freestyle. Andrea Ranson, a 15 year old Claremont student, finished 3rd

in the

100 freestyle and 4th

in the 50 freestyle. Sandra Mason won gold with the girls in the relays,

4X100 freestyle, 4X50 freestyle and 4X100 medley. Four VicO swimmers qualified at this

meet, Tanya Marquartdt, Lynda Kimmons, Connie Schultze and Bill Winram for the National

Team Trials later on in Brantford Ontario.

1981 Montreal

1981-2 was a banner year for the club’s Senior program. At the Winter Junior

Nationals VicO placed 1st overall in Eastern and Western Canada. On the

Senior National circuit VicO remained in the top 20 clubs (both winter and

summer). The highlight of the year was the placement of Wayne Kelly, 19, 2nd

- 100 free at Nationals, on both the World Championship Team and the

Commonwealth Games Team. Wayne’s accomplishment broke a 22 year

dryspell for Victoria (last Victoria man on a National Rep Team – Bob

Wheaton of the YMCA in 1960, last VASC member on a National Team Mary

Pat Pumfrey at the Pan Am games in 1967). Another highlight is the fact that

we had both a men’s and women’s relay team at the Senior Nationals this

summer (1982).

1982/1983

In 1982/83 Joe Schultze was President of the VASC, Ann Lower was the Secretary. Head

coach was Mark Fellner and Ted Bannister was the assistant head coach.

awards night for the 1981 / 1982 season was held on January 22, 1983.

Annual Elementary School Swim Meet took place February 3rd

Victoria North ( Districts 61, 63 and private schools) held their preliminaries and

on February 4th

Victoria South (District 62 and private schools) held their preliminaries. On

February 6th

the finals were held at the Crystal Pool where the combined team of St.

Michael’s University School and St. Margaret emerged as the overall and private school

champions. Hillcrest Elementary captured the public school championship.

At the 1983 Western Canadian Junior Championships in Edmonton Andrea Ranson (1st in the

50 free, 1st in 100 back consolation), Brad Johnson (4

th in the 50 free, 6

th in the 200 free),

Wayne Bonsdorf (4th

in 50 free consolation), Neil McKinlay (1st in the 200 free consolation,

1st in the 400 IM consolation) and Bill Winram (5

th in the 400 IM consolation). With one day

left VicO was in 5th

place overall.

The BC Championships were held at the Crystal Pool on the weekend of July 17/18 1983, the

Vic-O club finished 3rd

overall while the Cohoes finished 5th

overall. As a result of the meet a

total of 15 Vic-O swimmers qualified for the Western Junior Nationals in Vancouver on the

weekend of July 29-31 1983.

The Canadian Championships (Pan Am Trials) were also held on the July 27-30 weekend in

Montreal, the 6 Vic-O swimmers swimming at the meet were Wayne Kelly 2nd

- 200 free, Jon

Kelly, Connie Schultz, Linda Kinnons and Neil McKinley. After the first day the VicO team

was in 10th

place and dropped to 11th

after the second day. The team finished 13th

overall after

three days of competition.

Highlights of the 1982/83 season include; two national team members Wayne(20) Pan Am

games in Caracas and Jon (17) Kelly, third place at the BC Senior and Age Group

Championships, first place at the Vancouver Island Championships and seven athletes on the

BC Western Canada Games Team.

1983/1984

Mark Fellner was the head coach and Ted Bannister was the assistant coach.

At the Elementary School Swim Meet in 1984, 29 schools participated, over 1000 swimmers,

St Margaret’s and SMU were combined winners while Torquay won the Championships

meet.

Olympics in Los Angeles Jon Kelly, who won the 400 IM Championships, made the

Canadian National Team (Olympians were not eligible) and embarked to Australia ( 2nd

1984/1985

For the 1984/85 season Roy Sage was President, Joe Shultze Past President and Bernice

Deering Secretary. The coaching staff was Ron Jacks was head coach, Brian Metcalfe, Rob

MacGauley, Howard Firby and Jill Strachan.

The Canadian Winter Nationals took place in Calgary February 3-7 1985, Wayne Kelly, Jon

Kelly, Pam Rai, Ann Martin, Tanya Marquardt, Rhonda Thompson, Mike Ball, Phil Skinner,

Kim Bey, Serge Score and Connie Schultze represented the club which finished 5th

overall,

the men’s team finished 3rd

overall. Wayne Kelly finished 2nd

Championship in Brantford Ontario

February 9-12 1985. This was the first

year for this type of national program

involving youth 13 and under for girls

and 15 and under for boys. This was

also the first year for the junior

championships to be run on a Canada

wide basis. Youth VicO swimmers

were Corinne Liedtke, Steve McLeish,

Hurt Vollmerhaus, David Lowes, Chris

Collins and VicO junior national

swimmers were Tracey Lowe and

Tracey Sieradzan.

The BC Open Age Group Short Course Championships were held at the Crystal Pool on the

weekend of February 25-27 1984, Ann Barnes, Connie Schultze, David Sage, Tracey Lowe,

and Stephan McLeish, medaled for the VicO’s, while Simon Bicknell (five golds, one silver,

one bronze), Rosemary Neroutsos, Patty Armstrong, Chris McCarthy and Deanna Lane

medaled for the Cohoes. The Cohoes finished 3rd

overall at the Championship.

At the Summer Nationals (Pan Pacific Trials) in Montreal July 31st to August 3

The Victoria Amateur Swim Club finished 1st at the 1986 Vancouver Island Championship

short course swim meet.

Annual Elementary School Swim preliminary meet was held January 18-19 1987

with the finals held on February 1 1987.

July 11-13 1987,

Ryan Diehl may skip the Victoria ferry and swim home instead, based on the success he had

over the weekend in the B.C. Age Group Championships at Vancouver Aquatic Centre. The

12-year-old Victoria native collected three gold medals Sunday to close out a triumphant three

days at the event hosted by the Canadian Dolphins Swim Club. He also had a first (100 metre

backstroke) and second (400 individual medley) Friday and another gold Saturday in the 50

freestyle. Diehl, a member of the Victoria Amateur Swim Club, eclipsed the B.C. record in

the 200 individual medley Sunday with a 2:28.53 in the final. Other swimmers representing

the club were: (10 and under) David Fairhurst, Suzanne Weckend, (11-12) Josh Young, Nikki

Dryden, Anna Leong (who set a new BC record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of

2:47.21), (13-14) Chris Van der Steeg, Mike Golin, (15-17) Jeff Ratcliffe, Andrew

MacPherson.

The meet's overall title went to the Vancouver Dolphins with a point total of 1079. The

Vancouver club has won 17 of the last 19 B.C. Age Group Championships which are held

twice a year. New Westminster's Hyack Swim Club was a distant second with 763 points

followed by Victoria Amateur Swim Club third with 620 points and the Aquanauts with 399

points. About 50 clubs, 30 from B.C., were represented at the event for up-and-coming

swimmers under the age of 18.

Jon Kelly was a member of the 1987 National Team and swam in the Pan Pacific meet in

1987/1988

On October 14th

1987 Tommy Wellburn a long time VASC swimmer and member passed

away.

The Victoria Amateur Swim Club finished 1st at the 1987 Vancouver Island Championship

short course swim meet.

At the B.C. Long Course Age Group Championships in 1988 Vic-O finished 2nd

overall.

At the Winter Nationals in Edmonton February 2nd

overall while the Juan de Fuca Cohoes finished 4th

overall.

Tamiko Grealy won the Individual Aggregate award for girls aged 11-12 while Alan Cameron

won the award for the boys aged 13-14.

In the 1988 Short Course TAG Club Rankings Victoria Olympians were ranked 9th

in the

country based upon the TAG recorded in Swim Magazine.

As a result of the two Olympic Trial meets , Jon Kelly qualified for the

Olympics in Seoul. At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, Vic-O’s

only representative on the team Jon Kelly, set a BC Senior Age Group

record in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 1:59.40.

1988/1989

In 1988 the two Victoria based clubs, Victoria Amateur

Swimming Club and Juan de Fuca Coho Swim Club, along with

other island swim club such as Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Campbell

River, Comox and Duncan Swim Clubs signed a Memorandum of

Agreement to swim together competitively at most senior level and non-regional swim meets

off Vancouver Island as “Island Swimming”. Over the next two years the majority of clubs

withdrew from this agreement and 1990 only the VASC and JDF Cohoes where left. A

contest was held to design a logo which would be used for caps and other items. Colours to be

used were blue and green.

Island Swimming was ranked 4th

in the 1989 Long Course TAG Club ranking and show the

coaches to be; Bezaire, Campbell, Clarke, Drydale, Radford and Jacks.

they competed at a national level as Island Swimming.

In 1989 the Vic-O’s won the BC Age Group Short Course Championships held at the end of

February for the first time, this follows a Short Course 2nd

place finish in 1988 and a Short

Course 3rd

place finish in 1987.

The Summer Nationals in Calgary at Lindsay Park Pool August 1st to 5

th were the trials for the

Pan pacific meet to be held in Tokyo 12 days later. This was the first national meet where we

competed under the Island Swimming banner. Anne Barnes from Island Swimming won the

50 Backstroke, 200 backstroke and finished second in the 100 backstroke. The women’s team

finished third overall and Anne and Jon Kelly, 2nd

- 200 fly, were selected to the Pan Pacific

team where Anne finished 5th

in the 100 Metre Backstroke while Jon finished 4th

in the 200

Metre Fly.

1989/1990

At the Winter Nationals (Commonwealth Games trials) in Montreal November 25th

to 28th

100 Back and Anne Barnes who won the 200 Back medaled for the club.

At the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand in January 24th

1990 Island

Swimming was represented by Jon Kelly and Anne Barnes. Anne finished 7th

in both the 100

and 200 Backstroke. The Kelly family is getting a rare opportunity - a second chance to

capture a Commonwealth Games medal. Jon Kelly of the Victoria Olympians Swim Club

qualified for five events in the 1990 Commonwealth Games at Auckland during last week's

national trials in Montreal. Kelly has chosen to swim only four events because of time

constraints between events, but he has a good crack at winning medals. That would make up

for the medal that was denied his brother Wayne at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth

Games. The 1982 Canadian 4x200 freestyle relay team lost the silver medal after Kelly was

ruled to have left the blocks too early. Later evidence showed that wasn't the case. But the

ruling, once made, stood.

Jon Kelly finished the XIV Commonwealth Games in Auckland New Zealand with three

medals, bronze in the 200 Butterfly(he was ranked 8th

in the world), bronze in the 400 IM

(4:23.96 a personnel best time), and silver in the 4 X 200 Freestyle Relay.

At the Winter Nationals In Saskatoon February 28th

to March 3rd

1990 Island Swimmers

competing there were Jon Kelly 1st – 200 fly, Nikki Dryden 1

st – 800 Free, 3

rd – 400 Free.

On the weekend of March 16-18 1990, two BC Short Course Age Group Records were set in

the 13-14 age group. Allison Barriscale set a BC Record in the 100 Butterfly with a time of

1:03.07 and Leanne Wilkinson set a BC Record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:52.39.

In Vancouver on the weekend of July 8/9 1990 at the Provincial Long Course Championships

the Island Swimming relay team of Michael Calkins, Greg Downing, Wayne Linner, and Lee

Dryden set a BC record in the 200 meter Freestyle relay for 11-12 boys with a time of

1:55.53. Michael Calkins also set a BC and Canadian record in the 100 meter Butterfly for

11-12 boys with a time of 1:03.26. Both records still stand.
