Curtis DeTurk could have bought any car, but he chose a BMW.

This might sound like a new car ad, but DeTurk said he saved $16,000 by buying a used BMW at the BMW of Read-ing dealership.

DeTurk of Whitfield said the shaky economy made him reluctant to get into a three- or fi ve-year lease or car loan and, when he looked at the prices of used cars available at local dealerships, it convinced him that used was the way to go in this economy.

DeTurk is not alone. The Reading Eagle reported June 1 that

used-car prices were up between 5 percent and 35 percent over last year, depending on the make and model.

Edmunds.com, a trusted source of auto information, said Wednesday that the av-erage price paid in the U.S. for a three-year-old used vehicle in July was $19,248, which is up $1,800, or 10.3 percent from July 2009.

Industry analysts said consumers’ lack of confi dence in the economy is driving them to the used market. And rising demand for used cars is increasing their prices.

Despite that trend, DeTurk believes he got a good deal.

“I bought a 2007 BMW 328xi,” De-Turk said. “The price was right around $26,000.

“This was, by far, the best deal I could fi nd. Most of my friends were shocked to realize it was a 2007. It was in excellent condition, inside and out.”

DeTurk said prices for a new BMW 3 series normally run at least $42,000.

“This was definitely the way to go for me,” he said.

Philip Francabandera, general sales manager at BMW of Reading, said used car sales are up 300 percent this year.

“We used to sell 12 to 15 used cars a month,” he said. “We’re selling 45 a month now.”

Meanwhile, sales of new BMWs average around 20 to 25 per month, he said.

High-end secondhand vehicles are fetching higher prices as demand rises. Local dealers say the trend is alive here in Berks County.

OLDER IS HOTTERAuto industry analysts say the sluggish economic recovery is prompting more consumers to pass on the added debt associated with a new car purchase in favor of lower payments for a good used car.Three-year-old vehicles with the highest one-year pricing movement from July 2009:

After working more than a year without a contract, Conrad Weiser teachers have a new three-year agreement.

On Wednesday, the school board ap-proved a mediator’s proposal the teachers had approved on Friday.

“We are happy that we can start the school year on a positive note,” said Stacey Ressler, spokeswoman for the Conrad Weiser Edu-cation Association.

The school board voted 6-2, with board member Dennis J. Manbeck abstaining. His wife is a teacher.

The proposal freezes salaries for the fi rst year, except for education and seniority raises, board President W. David Zwicky said. There are small salary increases in the contract’s second and third years.

Zwicky and William R. Sheeler voted against the proposal.

Zwicky said he wasn’t in favor of the sal-ary increases.

Sheeler said in a written statement, “I term the vote a disservice to our community without reason or logic.” Sheeler declined further comment on his statement.

The proposal was accepted Friday by a majority of teachers at a general member-ship meeting, Ressler said. She did not pro-vide a vote tally.

It requires teachers to pay a percentage of health insurance costs, instead of a fl at rate. Teachers now pay a fl at monthly fee, such as $39 for a family insurance plan.

There are new guidelines for tuition re-imbursements and teachers will work two additional school days, Zwicky said.

Further details about the proposal were unavailable Wednesday night.

The teachers have worked without a con-tract since June 2009.

The new one will be retroactive to July 1, 2009, and the raise provided for in the second year will be retroactive to July 1.

Negotiations have included two fact-finding reports. The most recent report was accepted by the district and rejected by the association in June.

It would have frozen salaries for the fi rst year, except for education and seniority raises. The second year would have included a 2 percent raise and year three would have raised salaries 1.5 percent.

In a prepared statement, union President Wendy Kushner said the agreement weak-ens Conrad Weiser’s competitive position with many surrounding school districts.

Members from both sides met with a me-diator last week.

Three other Berks districts, Antietam, Gov. Miffl in and Kutztown, remain without contracts.Contact Erin Negley: 610-371-5047 or [email protected].

LUKE CASAMASSA makes no bones about being sur-prised by Conrad Weiser’s

3-0 start. “I didn’t see it coming,” the

Scouts’ senior linebacker admitted. “To be honest with you,” said

Pottsville coach Kevin Keating, “I don’t think anybody did.”

You could make an argument that no team in the history of the Inter-County League has ever graduated three players of the caliber the Scouts did and rebounded to start a season with three straight wins.

Of course, very few teams in I-C history ever put a trio of players such as DJ Robinson, Matt Weiser and Mike Oliveto on the field at the same time. They combined for more than 4,000 yards from scrimmage and scored 56 of Weiser’s 66 touch-downs during a 9-4 run last season that ended in the district semifinals.

Replacing them was impossible, but the Scouts have found a way to

win, cashing in with opportunistic play that has helped break open each of their games. They have built leads of 21-7, 37-7 and 22-0 in wins over Conestoga Valley, Cedar Cliff and Donegal.

They’ll find out just how good they are, and if they’re a legitimate contender in Section 1 of the Berks Football League, when Pottsville visits Robesonia tonight.

To date, everything’s been a bo-nus for the Scouts.

“I won’t say I’m surprised to be 3-0,” said head coach Alan Moyer, “I’m ecstatic. I really am. We weren’t really sure what we had. We found out we have some playmakers. We aren’t where we want to be yet, but we’re certainly happy at 3-0.”

One of those playmakers has been Angel Cruz, a solid starting linebacker as a sophomore last sea-son. He rarely got touches on of-fense because, well, the Scouts were allowed to use only one ball on each play, and why would you want to take it out of the hands of

guys like Robinson, Oliveto or Weiser?

Opponents are now finding the only way to get it away from the 5-8, 170-pound Cruz is to wait until he places it down in the end zone after a touchdown.

He has a Berks-leading 62 points, with 10 touchdowns — one off an in-terception return, one off a fumble return, two on receptions and six on runs from scrimmage.

He leads the team in rushing, with 241 yards; in receiving, with seven catches; and in tackles, with 20.

“I knew on defense he’d be a star player,” Casamassa said, “but I didn’t think he’d be on both sides of the ball. I didn’t know he’d give us this much on offense. You hand him the ball and he’s running kids over and getting to the end zone.”

“I’m just trying to do what I can for my team,” Cruz said modestly, “trying to get us a win.”

And scoring 10 touchdowns in three games?

By Mike DragoReading Eagle

There’s little margin for error when hunting for a championship in the jungle that is Section 1 of the Berks Football League.

The Daniel Boone Blazers and Conrad Weiser Scouts realize as much. Each took a shiny 7-0 mark into its game last week, and each was defeated.

Now they’re both scrambling, try-ing to survive, trying to keep their title hopes alive, a task doubly diffi-cult because they’ll be doing it to-night on the same field.

Someone will go home tonight with a two-game losing streak and with their hopes for a section title vanished.

“It’s just business as usual,” al-lowed Blazers coach Dave Bodolus, who has been down this treacher-ous road before.

A year ago Boone won its first seven games, lost to Gov. Mifflin, then rebounded to save its season by beating the Scouts in overtime. The Blazers went on to share the Section 1 title with Mifflin and Pottsville.

Both the Blazers (4-1, 7-1) and the

Scouts (4-1, 7-1) remain in position to either share the section title or win it outright.

The Blazers need someone to beat Mifflin, either Exeter tonight or Weiser next week. The Scouts control their own destiny; if they win out they’ll claim at least a part of the title.

Weiser coach Alan Moyer won’t allow himself to look at the big pic-ture. It’s all about survival tonight, and he feels as though the Scouts are the prey against a hungry Boone team that’s ranked No. 1 in the league in both total offense and to-tal defense and features some of the league’s most dangerous weapons.

“For us, it’s just another Friday night against a tough opponent,” Moyer said. “We’re just trying to re-group and get them focused. We’ve got to get back to the basics, block-ing and tackling, which we didn’t do (last) Friday (in a 21-0 loss to Ex-eter).”

Just being in position to compete for a title with two weeks to go is newsworthy for the Scouts. They’ve already won more games than any-one imagined. They’re playing with house money at this point.

Not so for the Blazers who re-turned a boatload of veterans and were expected to win the Section 1 title and possibly match or improve upon their school-record 11-win season of a year ago.

Playing against a Mifflin team that was without its starting quar-

terback the Blazers may have let that opportunity slip away in last week’s 14-7 loss.

The Blazers played well enough on defense but couldn’t shake any-thing loose on offense, where they were limited to a season-low 172 to-tal yards — less than half their nor-mal output.

Quarterback Tommy Bodolus, who has run and passed for 1,000 yards, was effectively hemmed in and prevented from making big plays. So was tailback Darrell Scott, the league’s top receiver.

“You’ve just got to find a way to make a couple plays,” Dave Bodo-lus said. “We’re not that big, so we’re not gonna pound people.

“We understand as we get to the better teams we have to play sound-er defensively and score when we’ve got the opportunity. You’re not gonna light up the scoreboard every week.”

The Scouts had trouble moving the ball themselves. They were held to a season-low 148 yards against Exeter, and quarterback Nick Schoener — who entered the game as the top-rated passer in the league — was knocked out of the game in the second quarter. His status for to-night is uncertain.

“From last week on, it’s gonna be a tough week every week,” Dave Bodolus said. “You’re gonna have to win those tough games. I like our chances, but it’s gonna be a tough road.”

Boone, Weiser battle for survival in Section 1 title huntThe Blazers and Scouts are trying to regroup following their first losses of the season.
