Nobody can go back and start a new beginning
But anyone can start today and make a new ending. [5 minutes]
Activities.
1) Being a responsible leader: Look into some scenarios [15 minutes]
a) Explain that some of the roles of a leader are to hold the vision of a group, keep harmony,
and ensure that key values and attitudes are upheld as much as possible. Inevitably in any
group, there will be some friction and differences of opinion. Depending on how a leader
responds, the group will keep the vision, harmony and values, or lose sight of them.
b) With students still in their groups, give each group one of the following scenarios printed
out on separate papers, and ask them what will they do. Remind them that we are trying
to utilise spiritual principles, not only practical skills.
i. You have been voted as captain of the school athletics team. There are others who
wanted to be captain, especially one person who used to be your friend and now
won’t speak with you. He/she is on the team and will not cooperate with any
request you make. In fact he/she does everything possible to make your life difficult
as captain, encouraging others to ignore you. How will you handle this situation?
[jealousy]
ii. You are a class leader, and have been asked to mediate in an incident in the school
playground where one boy has been teased by another for not having proper school
uniform and is in tears. The teaser doesn’t think he has done anything wrong, as he
was just having a bit of fun. The boy who was teased is always being teased, and
wants to leave the school because it happens so often. What will you do to bring
harmony? [hurt]
iii. You are the President of a country called Emeraldia. One of your citizens writes to
you informing you of the extreme cruelty of one racial group called the Ananot
towards another called the Zerons in the country. Men, women and children are
being killed or imprisoned. You investigate and find out that it is true. The reason
for this cruelty is because in the past the Zerons have held the Ananot as slaves and
treated them very badly, and now the Ananot want revenge. What will you do to
stop the cruelty and bring about reconciliation? [cruelty]
c) If there is time, each group reports back to the class what they chose to do and why.
2) Reflection [15 minutes]
Students can work in groups and express their thoughts on what has been revealed to them
through the lessons on ‘Responsibility’ in the form of Poster, Skit, PPT, etc. Encourage the
students to be as creative and open as possible. They can finish their work during this time or
can take some work home to complete it before the next class. The product will be displayed
on the bulletin board and/or shared with everyone in the next class.
The main question to be reflected upon with respect to the value being Responsibility:
How am I improving as a person with respect to the human values pertaining to character
building?
What is your responsibility as a human being?
Follow up for the week:
1) Ask students to reflect during the week on whether it is always possible to do what you want
as a leader. Does a leader have all the power of decision-making in any group? Should they
have all the power? What happens when you are not able to bring about your vision as a
leader because of things beyond your control? This is in preparation for next week’s class.
2) Students complete the reflection and bring it to the next class.
