Abigail’s ColumnI havewrittenaboutstaying safeon thestreets andwith drugs(avoid) sothought Iwould lookat online

safety. There are so manydifferent apps, social media sites, games etc. it can be hardnavigating through them. It isreally important when we loadsomething onto our phones, tablet or pc that we know whatthey are and what access theyhave. Below are some of my tipsand findings. Most social media sites havejoining age limits. For example,Facebook is 13+yrs.All good social media sites havesafety buttons. Report any bad orunusual activity.

Bullying online is a criminaloffence. If you don't want it out there forever don't post it.Disable in app purchasing to saverunning up bills.Read the terms and conditionsbefore downloading. It might beboring but by clicking you cansign away your content and giveaccess to your private details.Never just agree, read them.Make sure others are happy foryou to post photos of them, getpermission first.Only communicate from peopleyou know. There are lots of fakeidentities out there.Never agree to meet someone youhave spoken to online.Don't think that the screen is yoursafety net. Use technology to havefun and talk to your friends butknow how to keep safe and whatto do to avoid problems. Look atwww.thinkuknow.co.uk for moretips.

Begging atUpminsterStationThere have been a number ofreports regarding beggars outsideUpminster Station. I have seen

these for myself. HaveringCouncil has been issuing formalwarnings and CPNs in RomfordTown Centre and this appears tohave pushed the problem toHornchurch and Upminster.Upminster Police are aware of thesituation and will be keeping thestation under review and movingthe beggars on when they findthem. If you wish to report thiscall 0208 7212726 and the call willbe switched through to our police.

Report a Problem– No Need toRegisterNot everyone wants to register onthe Council website simply toreport a pothole, dog fouling oran overflowing litter bin. The siteis currently being developed tooffer users a choice as to whetherto register before reporting adefect or making a servicerequest. So far, reporting fly-tipping and animal carcassremoval can be done with theoption of registering or not, and itis planned to roll this out moreextensively.

Cllr CLARENCE BARRETT

A Minority ofDog WalkersAs a nation of dog lovers, it seemsincredible that we still have somepeople that feel it necessary toleave their dog waste for others todispose of. There have been anumber of locations reported tome that are experiencing thedropping of used dog waste bagson the pavement, rather than

beingdisposed ofresponsibly. If youwitness orrecogniseany dogowner notcleaning upafter theiranimal, orleaving used

dog bags on the public highway, you can report this to the Councilon the Council websitehttps://my.havering.gov.uk. Youcan also make a request for dogmess to be cleared on the website. We do have an incredibly highnumber of residents that clean upafter their animals, we now needto find and educate those that areset on making the area messy.

There are manybuildings of historical andarchitectural interest such as StMary’s Church, The Town Halland Henley Bridge. The award-

Big Changes toBusiness RatesSupporting our local businesses isvital to the success of our localeconomy, creating jobs andkeeping our town centres thrivinghubs of choice and activity. Areality for businesses is the recentrevaluation of premises and, formany, a sizeable increase inBusiness Rates bills. Although thegovernment have increased thethreshold for 100% smallbusinesses rate relief, there arestill many businesses facing largehikes. There is relief availablethrough capping the increase anda £300m discretionary rate reliefwhere councils will have flexibilityas to where to apply additionalsupport. From 2019, councils willretain all Business Rates instead ofthe current 50%. This is asignificant shift in how localauthorities are funded andemphasises the importance oflocal councils working in harmonywith the business sector. I amfortunate to be on a national localgovernment working grouplooking at Business Rates andwould be happy to pick up any

issues or questions readers mayhave.

Lidl HornchurchPlanning permission has finallybeen given for the supermarketchain, Lidl, to open at 31 HighStreet Hornchurch, on the site ofthe former Mecca Bingo Hall, andof-course at one time TowersCinema. Sadly, the iconicbuilding will not be used, however, one of the conditions isthat a detailed scheme is agreedby the Council for the re-use ofthe "Towers" lettering taken fromthe from the front of the building.Following concerns fromCouncillors about trafficcongestion, there will be no right-hand turn into the car-parkcoming from the east (Upminster)and left hand turn only whenleaving.

ProstateMattersWhen I was diagnosed withprostate cancer some two yearsago I felt that my cosy world hadfallen apart. Like many men, thethought of getting prostate cancercrossed my mind but really didn’t

take up too much time. During aroutine check up with my G.P. hesuggested that it might beadvisable to have a blood test tocheck my Prostate SpecificAntigen (PSA) level. When theresult came back, and that thelevel was higher than normal, Iwas referred to hospital wherevarious tests confirmed that I hadprostate cancer. I was prescribeda course of hormone therapy. Tobe honest my life has changedvery little in that time and I amextremely grateful to my G.P. andQueens Hospital for theirexcellent care in diagnosing mycondition and for the treatmentthat I am receiving. So far for mystory but the first point I wouldlike to make is that the sooner thisproblem is detected the better.Often more types of treatment areavailable if prostate cancer iscaught in the early stages. Thesecond point is that I personallyfound the support provided byPHASE (Prostate Health, AdviceSupport and Education) veryreassuring when I was firstdiagnosed. Meetings are held 10times a year at the NeighbourhoodCentre, Gubbins Lane HaroldWood. Further information canbe found atwww.phasehavering.org.uk.
