FIRST THING IS FIRST: The Dodgers tonight return home after winning
four of seven on the road trip and after last night’s victory over the Padres,
find themselves in sole possession of first place in the NL West for the first
time this season. This evening, the club takes on the Angels in the first of
three contests this weekend against their Southern California neighbors.
Last week, the Angels took two of three from the Dodgers in Anaheim. Los
Angeles is 8-3 in July, has been victorious in 35 of its last 51 contests since
May 7 and has posted a 25-12 (.676) record since the beginning of June,
which is the best winning percentage in the NL over that time. Following
the Freeway Series driven by Lexus, the first half comes to a close and the
Dodgers don’t return to action until July 20 in Milwaukee.
The Dodgers and Angels have played more games against each
other than any other Interleague opponents:

THE MAN: In a news conference this afternoon, Dodger infielder Chase
Utley announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2018 season. Utley
has currently played in 1,907 games over the last 16 seasons for the Phillies
(2003-15) and Dodgers (2015-18). The Southern California native has
1,880 career hits, 259 home runs and 1,025 RBI to go along with a career

bench role this season, Utley is hitting .409 (9-for-22) as a pinch-hitter.
FUNKY MUNCY IN DERBY: Dodger infielder Max Muncy will head to
Washington, D.C. and participate in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby on
Monday, July 16 at Nationals Park. Muncy gives the Dodgers a player in
the Derby for the fifth consecutive year and will become the ninth player
(10 appearances) in Dodgers history to take part in the event, joining Hall
of Famer Mike Piazza (1993-94), Raul Mondesi (1995), Hee-Seop Choi
(2005), Matt Kemp (2011-12), Yasiel Puig (2014), Joc Pederson (2015),
Corey Seager (2016) and Cody Bellinger (2017).
Entering play today, Muncy is tied for the National League (min.
200 PA) lead in OPS (1.019) and leads the NL in home runs per
at bat (10.14, 1st-MLB), while ranking among the league’s best in
OBP (.414, 2nd), SLG (.606, 2nd) and homers (21, T-4th).
According to Fangraphs.com, his 3.3 WAR also ranks seventh
best in the Senior Circuit among hitters with 200 or more plate
appearances.
In his last 32 starts since June 3, Muncy is slashing .306 (34-for-
111)/.469/.703 with 28 runs, 14 home runs, 20 RBI and a 1.172
OPS. During that span, he has reached base safely in 29 games and
has drawn 34 walks against striking out 30 times.
WALK ON: Dodger right-hander Walker Buehler is expected to be
reinstated from the disabled list tonight (right ribcage soreness) and make
his first start since June 8 vs. Atlanta. Buehler did make a big league relief
appearance on June 28 vs. the Cubs, but was placed back on the DL and
made one rehab start for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on
July 3 (3.0 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 5 K). On the season, Buehler has gone 4-2 with
a 3.44 ERA (20 ER/52.1 IP) and has limited the opposition to a .222 average
in 10 games (nine starts). Buehler has also struck out 54 batters against just
12 walks, while posting a 1.05 WHIP. Among NL starters who have logged
at least 40.0 innings and not counting his relief appearance, he owns the best
opponents’ OPS (.525, 1st, MLB) in the league, while ranking sixth in WHIP
and 12th in opponents’ batting average.
Buehler has been rock solid at Dodger Stadium this season, going
2-2 with a 2.87 ERA (10 ER/31.1 IP) and holding opposing hitters
to a .195 average, while striking out 31 batters against just four

OFF TO THE NATION’S CAPITAL: Dodger closer Kenley Jansen,
outfielder Matt Kemp and right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling will all
represent the Dodgers in the nation’s capital next week as they were selected
to the National League All-Star team. Jansen, who was selected via player
balloting, and Kemp, who was a fan-elected starter, will both be making
their third All-Star appearance. Stripling, who was added to the squad on
Wednesday, is a first-time All-Star. The 89th All-Star Game presented by
Mastercard is Tuesday, July 17 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. at
5:00 p.m. PT and televised nationally on FOX. \
Jansen leads the NL with 26 saves and has posted a 2.23 ERA, a

appearances this year. He has tossed scoreless relief in 26 of his
last 30 games since May 3, while successfully converting 22 of
23 save opportunities during that span.
Kemp is a fan-elected starter for the first time since 2011 and the
veteran outfielder becomes the first Dodger fan-elected starter
since Yasiel Puig in 2014. Entering play today, Kemp ranks
among the NL’s best in batting average (.316, 4th), slugging
percentage (.537, 7th), OPS (.894, 7th) and RBI (60, T-6th) in 89
