BAN ON CHEWING GUM

Chewing gum, one of the oldest sweet treats, is not allowed everywhere in the world. Despite its benefits

and popularity, Singapore has banned the import and sale of chewing gum.

II Chewing gum has existed, in various forms, for thousands of years. Researchers believe that prehistoric men

and women, Ancient Greeks and American Indians chewed on tree resin to clean their teeth and freshen their

breath. Today, chewing gum is a popular treat that people enjoy all over the world.

III Have you ever thought what makes gum sticky and causes its elasticity? Chewing gum is made of chicle,

a natural latex product which comes from tree sap. In order to lower production costs and improve quality,

many chewing gums use synthetic rubber instead of chicle. The actual gum we chew today is made up of a gum

base and sweeteners, flavouring and sometimes food colouring. Softeners such as glycerine or vegetable oil are

used to help prevent the gum from becoming too stiff.

IV One of the advantages of chewing gum is that it can enhance concentration. Researchers believe that the action of

chewing stimulates a part of the brain which releases hormones that keep us alert. Chewing gum can also freshen

breath and help fight tooth decay by neutralising acids that accumulate in our mouth from the foods we eat.

V So, with all these advantages, what caused Singapore to ban chewing gum? The government in Singapore

enacted the ban against the import and sale of chewing gum in 1992 as a response to the inappropriate disposal

of gum. People stuck it on chairs, in postboxes, in keyholes and also on lift buttons. It was even stuck on the

door sensors of trains, preventing the doors from closing. This resulted in increased cleaning costs and in

the repair of damaged equipment. A revised law in 2004 allowed the import of chewing gum for therapeutic

purposes only.

VI The next time you enjoy the sweet taste of chewing gum in your mouth, remember that in Singapore you wouldn’t

be able to enjoy this simple pleasure. That is, unless you’ve got a health condition that permits it.

HIGH-TECH BIKE SHARING

With the increasing cost of petrol and the fact that people are becoming more environmentally conscious,

the city of Washington, DC, in the USA, is trying to make cycling part of the daily commute for many of its

residents. In the mid-1990s, some US cities decided to try out public bike-sharing programmes which were

introduced to cope with parking shortages and increasing air pollution. People borrowed bikes for free and

after they had reached their destination, they left them around town for the next rider. There were no locks, no

deposits and, pretty soon, no bikes! Theft and vandalism quickly wiped out these programmes.

II Over a decade later, Washington is now launching the first high-tech bike-sharing programme in the USA.

The SmartBikes come with advanced locking systems and tracking devices to prevent thefts. Officials hope the

only problem this time around will be having enough supply to meet demand.

III The programme is based on the one in Paris, known as Vélib. Paris’ cheap public bike-rental system, launched

in 2007, offers 20,600 bikes and about 1,450 stations. The programme has already resulted in a five per cent

drop in car traffic in the city. Consequently, many parking spots have already been transformed into bike

stations.

IV Compared with Paris, Washington’s programme will begin on a much smaller scale. Officials are starting with 120 bikes and 10 stations but realise the need to expand in order to significantly reduce congestion and air

pollution levels.

V To borrow a SmartBike in Washington, users have to be over 18 and have a credit card. The programme keeps

track of the bikes via tiny chips. If riders fail to return them – or if the bikes are stolen – it will cost them $200.

VI For cycling to become a practical means of transport, cities need to spend time and money increasing the number of available bikes and, more importantly, making streets safer for two-wheelers. With that purpose in

mind, Washington has already installed more than 48 km of bike lanes. In addition, safety campaigns are being

conducted to help cyclists and motorists get along. It seems Washington is riding full-speed ahead.

FOR THE SAKE OF ENGLISH

More than 40,000 South Korean schoolchildren are believed to be living outside South Korea with their

mothers. Dissatisfied with South Korea’s rigid educational system, more and more parents are looking to

give their children a better education and to help them become fluent in English. These families live apart,

sometimes for years, in order to educate their children in English-speaking countries like New Zealand and the

United States. The mothers and children live overseas while the fathers, who live and work in South Korea, fly

over to visit a couple of times a year.

II This phenomenon not only strains family relations, but also causes financial difficulties. However, parents

believe the effort is well worthwhile. They believe that fluency in English will increase their children’s chances

of gaining admission to better secondary schools in South Korea and ultimately to a leading university.

III They claim South Korean schools are failing to teach English, as well as other skills like creative thinking,

crucial in an era of globalisation. “We talked about coming here for two years before we finally did it,” said Kim

Soo-in, who went to New Zealand with her two sons. “It was never a question of whether to do it, but when.”

IV In 2006, about 30,000 children from primary- through secondary-level schools left South Korea, nearly double

the number in 2004, according to the Korean Educational Development Institute. In an attempt to address the

problem, the South Korean government has decided to hire 10,000 English teachers.

V In the meantime, it could take years to see how these children will adjust when they return to South Korea,

because most had left as very young children. Many parents worry that their children might not form a solid

“Korean identity”, which would affect their chances of getting accepted into the best Korean schools.

VI Another major concern is the price families have to pay. Kevin Park, whose daughter attends a school in New

Zealand, is not totally convinced that the benefits have been worth splitting up the family for. “I’m alone, I miss

my family,” he said grimly in an interview in Seoul. “Families should live together.”

HOW DID CHINA BEAT THE WORLD IN BEIJING?

Many people would agree that the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing were a Chinese success story. In

the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, China won only 16 gold medals. So how did China manage in under 20 years

to top the medal table with 51 golds and to arrange such a well-organised event? The first and most important

reason is the fact that both the government and people of China were deeply motivated to show the world that

they could organise the best, most spectacular Games ever seen. The second reason was the unlimited amount

of effort and money they were willing to invest to achieve their goal.

II In order to host such a major event, the Chinese government had to build suitable venues for the different

events in Beijing, invest in new roads and subway lines, and enlarge the airport. The new buildings, including

the famous Bird’s Nest stadium and the Water Cube aquatic centre, caused controversy as many old areas of

Beijing were demolished to make way for them. The total cost of creating the infrastructure for the Games

was an incredible $40 billion. The Chinese government also had to deal with the problem of Beijing’s severe

air pollution. Before and during the Olympics, factories were closed and cars were banned from the roads of

Beijing to improve air quality.

III China’s athletic success begins by training its athletes from a very young age. Children are taught in special

schools, sometimes starting as young as six years old. For the 2008 Olympics, they decided to train athletes

for all 28 Olympic sports, eventually winning medals in 22 of them. They placed the greatest emphasis on

ten sports which included diving, gymnastics and weightlifting, and managed to win 40 gold medals in those

events.

IV Staging the Olympics always gives the home nation an advantage and acts as an incentive to both government

and people to prove themselves. But the Chinese took the Olympic motto of “swifter, higher, stronger” to

greater extremes, thus ensuring their success as both hosts and competitors.

3. Answer the questions. [3 x 3 = 9 points]

centre controversial?

TEEN MILLIONAIRES

Adolescence is a time for learning, partying and thinking about the future, yet some teens have become

millionaires before the age of 20. So while most teens are running to catch the school bus, these teens are running to the bank.

II Fraser Doherty is a teen who used a family tradition to make his fortune. In 2002, when he was 14, Doherty

began making jam from his grandmother’s recipes in his family home in Edinburgh, Scotland. The naturally

sweetened jam became an instant hit with friends and neighbours. In order to keep up with the increasing

demand, Doherty rented time at a large food-processing factory. By the age of 16, Doherty left school to

dedicate all his time to his growing business. In 2007, Waitrose, a major supermarket chain in the UK, began selling Doherty’s SuperJam products and subsequently expanded the line to 184 of its stores. In 2008, SuperJam

had estimated sales of close to $1 million.

III What are the qualities that enable teens like Doherty to achieve such remarkable success in business? First, they

believe in themselves and they’ve got a positive self-image. This gives them the confidence and strength to face

challenges and handle failure. In addition, teen millionaires have got the ability to predict that an idea has got

potential value. They’re passionate about their product and have got the courage to take chances.

IV Many people are under the misconception that, in addition to having years of work experience, successful

business people must be manipulative and aggressive. However, studies on lucrative business practices indicate

that the opposite is true. Successful sales people report that patience and persuasion are the most effective tools

in making sales.

V Teen millionaires like Doherty didn’t achieve their fortunes overnight. They thought of original ideas and

developed them from conception to production with enthusiasm and commitment. If you want to be rich before

the age of 20, take a lesson from the teen millionaires.

ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD

Students in very poor countries do not have the same educational opportunities as those in wealthy countries.

This is largely due to the fact that computer access is limited in developing countries. In order to try and do something to improve this situation, Nicholas Negroponte, an American professor and pioneer of digital

technology, helped to found the One Laptop Per Child Association (OLPC) in 2006.

II This organisation has developed a small laptop computer, the XO-1, which is durable, inexpensive and energy-

efficient. The aim is to distribute millions of these computers to schools in the developing world. By 2009,

nearly a million of these computers were already in use in 30 countries, including Afghanistan, Lebanon,

Nigeria, Pakistan and Peru. The laptops are sold to governments, which then pass them on where needed.

III The XO-1 laptop was designed to operate in harsh environments. These computers have to function in areas

without reliable electricity supplies, in communities that may not have phone lines and in conditions of extreme

heat, moisture and dust. To overcome these challenges, the computers were designed with some unique features.

The green and white covering of the computer is waterproof, dustproof and durable. The computers are equipped

with special antennas for wireless Internet connection. The laptops use one tenth of the electricity used by

ordinary computers and can be powered by solar energy or by a hand-powered generator.

IV The biggest challenge facing the OLPC is getting one laptop to every child who needs one. The problem is that

although the computers are quite cheap, around $200 each, governments of developing nations cannot afford to

buy enough machines. Unfortunately, the global economic slowdown in 2008 made it even harder to find the

funding for the project.

V Plans are being made by OLPC to introduce the XO-2, a new and improved version of the XO-1, which should

be available for only around $100. Lowering the price to this level is a very important step towards achieving

Negroponte’s goal of providing students everywhere with educational opportunities for the future with this

remarkable little computer.

BACKPACKING – IT’S NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE

I’ve spent hours at the local camping shop choosing my backpack and other accessories. I’ve read every

guidebook and spent what seems like a lifetime in Student Travel booking tickets, organising travel insurance

and purchasing traveller’s cheques. It’s December 1986 and I’m at the airport surrounded by family and friends.

I’m off around the world and I can’t wait. Or can I? When will I speak to my loved ones again? Will I be able to

ring them frequently or will phone calls home wipe out my budget? Where will I get my post from? I suddenly

realise that I’m going to be all alone in the big world. I’m both excited and nervous.

II Fast forward to 2009. Emily is about to go on her first overseas trip. She googles London, Paris, Prague and

Barcelona, her chosen destinations, and begins to collect the information she needs for her trip. With just a few

clicks of the mouse, she has compared flights and purchased the best deal for her round-the-world airfare, as

well as all her equipment. Emily’s mobile phone and international credit card are safely tucked away. Emily

promises her family and friends she will text them on her arrival and will e-mail every other day. With modern

technology, Emily knows that she will always be only an SMS away from home.

III Technology has dramatically changed travelling and backpacking. For one thing, we no longer need to

take rolls of film with us, as digital cameras enable us to take thousands of photos, that can be downloaded

onto Facebook, and videos, which can be put on YouTube for everyone to see. Most importantly, though,

communication with home is constant, thanks to the mobile phone and e-mail.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA – CLEAN UP THE WORLD

Every year, people create more and more waste. We shop daily, purchasing additional products. Each of these

products is wrapped in more and more packaging. Mobile phones are being upgraded at an increasing level and

we change our car every decade. So what happens to all that waste? It’s put in landfills and over time the

pollution from this waste enters our environment through our groundwater and our waterways, thus penetrating

the food chain. Our environment is being damaged every moment of every day, and we can’t do anything about

it. Or can we?

II Ian Kiernan, an Australian property developer, has proved that people can do something about the growing

amount of waste. While taking part in a round-the-world yacht race in 1987, Kiernan was horrified to see that the

world’s oceans and waterways were covered in rubbish. He then decided to take matters into his own hands and

clean up the mess.

III His first stop was Sydney, Australia. On 8th January, 1989, together with a group of friends and more than

40,000 volunteers, Kiernan led the Clean Up the Harbour Day. An unbelievable 3,750 tons of rubbish were

removed in one day, restoring one of the world’s most beautiful natural harbours to its former glory. The

following year, Kiernan took his idea one step further with Clean Up Australia Day. This time over 300,000

citizens, each armed with rubbish bags and a pair of gloves, took part in the community effort to make

a difference.

IV It wasn’t surprising that Kiernan’s final target was the world. In 1993, the United Nations Environment

Programme (UNEP) threw itself behind Kiernan and his Clean Up the World campaign. On that first global

clean up day, more than 30 million people in 80 countries collected decades of accumulated waste.

V In 2008, UNEP’s campaign slogan for Clean Up the World Day was “Start today. Save tomorrow”. Each and

every one of us has the responsibility to create a little less rubbish and to dispose of our waste more carefully.

Let’s get practical by joining the 35 million people in 120 countries who, every September, volunteer to make

tomorrow’s world a cleaner one.

LIGHT POLLUTION

We all know what air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution are. But do you know what photo pollution

or luminous pollution are? Probably not, but these are just different names for light pollution.

II Light pollution refers to obtrusive or excessive light created by humans. It often interferes with natural light such

as in the case of street lights blocking out starlight.

III Light pollution can cause discomfort and can even affect your health. For example, strong lighting from

a neighbouring home, street lights, billboard lights or lights from a nearby motorway can disturb sleep when it shines directly into homes. In turn, sleep disturbance can lead to secondary problems such as traffic accidents

and poor performance at work or school. Efficiency experts believe that light pollution or excessive light

exposure may also cause worker fatigue, stress and increased anxiety.

IV Light pollution can also disrupt the environment. Light pollution can confuse animals and interfere with their

navigation. For example, migrating birds can be disoriented by lights on tall buildings. Many birds have

reportedly been killed after colliding with brightly lit buildings. Sea-turtle hatchlings, which depend on moonlight and starlight to guide them to the water, are confused and misdirected by artificial lighting. As a

result, they often end up heading towards lit-up car parks, beach houses and hotels by mistake.

V Despite the seriousness of the problem, light pollution is relatively easy to solve. Minimum-intensity lighting

should be used for all illumination. Make sure that unnecessary lighting is turned off by using timers. Improve

the efficiency of light fixtures by directing light more accurately towards where it’s needed. People need to

understand that lighting should be effective, but not excessively bright. If we want to increase our quality of life, we need to decrease the quantity of light.
