He remains hospitalized in intensive care. Rowan Williams To Step R Down As Anglican Leader ARCHBISHOP of Canterbury Rowan Williams says he is stepping down at the end of the year, closing a tumultuous decade as leader of a global Anglican communion sharply divided on issues of sexuality and gender. He announced last month that he will take up a new post as master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. Williams was appointed in 2002 as archbishop of Canterbury, the senior official in the Church of England and spiritual leader of the global Anglican Communion. Scots To Launch May R Independence Campaign SCOTLAND’S leader Alex Salmond says a campaign for independence will be launched in May, more than two years before the preferred date for a referendum on leaving the United Kingdom. Salmond is seeking to hold an in- dependence referendum in September 2014, hoping that a separation from London would be completed with a May 2016 election for the Scottish Parliament. He told the BBC last month he is “so confident” of winning the referendum that he wants a long “yes” campaign period to ensure voters in Scotland have answers to all their questions about its implications. Opinion polls show that only about a third of Scots favor splitting up the na- tion, and Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron is pressing for the indepen- dence vote to be held before 2014. Engelbert To Sing For UK At Eurovision WHO BEST to guide Britain to glory after years of disappointment in Europe’s lead- ing pop music competition? Apparently Engelbert Humperdinck, the sideburned, square-jawed, 75-year-old crooner who famously beat the Beatles to the No 1 spot in the UK charts in 1967. The BBC has surprised pop fans by choosing Humperdinck, whose last hit was almost 40 years ago, as Britain’s entry in the 2012 Eu- rovision Song Contest, the in- ternational competition renowned for kitsch balladry and plastic pop. The singer, best known for his 1967 song Release Me, said he was honored to be representing his country and was “raring to go.” Enlisting the septuagenarian singer to compete in a pan-European talent show usually dominated by packaged pop acts was seen either as an audacious gamble or an embarrassing wrong note. Daily Telegraph newspaper rock critic Neil McCormick called it “an act of des- peration or a stroke of genius.” Budget Hits Pensioners And ‘Cornish Pasty’ IN HIS ANNUAL budget statement last month, George Osborne said he was cut- ting the top rate from 50 percent to 45 percent by April next year on incomes over £150,000 a year. He argued that the original higher rate did not yield as much as expected, partly because the rich were able to avoid the tax. Osborne sought to deflect criticism that the coalition government was being soft on the wealthy by announcing a big hike in the level at which Britons start paying tax, to £9,205. There are doubts, however, whether the poorest will reap the full reward, given they may lose some benefits. One group that appears disappointed by changes announced were retired people. Age UK, the country’s leading lobby group for pensioners, criticized Osborne’s plan to scrap the age-related tax allowance, saying it would “affect those with modest pensions and savings for their retirement.” Documents published alongside the budget indicate that the Treasury may reap a wind- fall of around £3.3bn from the changes to the tax allowances to pensioners. HOT Most food and drink is zero-rated, but takeaway food sold to be eaten hot is sub- ject to Value Added Tax at 20 percent. But amidst the food taxation, the plight of the humble pasty has been raised in the House of Commons after the chancel- lor announced plans to slap VAT on the snack. Mid Cornwall MP Stephen Gilbert said the pasty was “a staple, hearty meal” which brought millions of pounds into his county and must be protected. His colleague An- drew George said those in Cornwall would “be fighting them on the beaches” to block any “pasty tax”. Ministers say all food sold “above ambi- ent temperature” should carry VAT. VAT is not charged on most food and drink – such are described as zero-rated. It is payable on takeaway food sold to be eaten hot, but baked goods which are put on display warm and subsequently cool down are also zero-rated. Bread would remain zero-rated – even if it is still warm when placed on shop shelves. Bakery chain Greggs has said it will make “strong representations” about the plan and did not believe its “freshly baked savoury products” should be included. Its shares fell by five percent on immediately after the announcement, wiping £30m off First Class Stamp To Cost 60p THE ROYAL MAIL announced a price rise in postage stamps last month which will see a First Class stamp, currently 46p, rise to 60p. The cost increase will come into being April 30. A second-class stamp will go up from 36p to 50p – some 5p below the top price allowed by Ofcom. The regulator has allowed Royal Mail to set the price of first-class and business mail. It claimed the future of the universal service was at “severe risk” without relax- ing controls. The 30 percent price rise in first-class stamps, and 39 percent rise for second- class, mark the biggest annual increase in percentage terms since 1975. Ten years ago, a first-class stamp cost 27p, and a second-class cost 19p. Over the next seven years, the price of second-class stamps will be capped at 55p but this limit could rise with inflation each year. Royal Mail said that the cost of posting Christmas cards in 2012 will be the same as last year for consumers on Pension Credit and Employment and Support Allowance or Incapacity Benefit. Council Spotting Teens Under Pink Lights

AN INNOVATIVE method of controlling teen-agers, who hang around on street corners looking for trouble, is being tried out in a city in Wales.

New lights have been installed that accen-tuate skin imperfections, and have become the Council’s new weapons. The special acne lights being used in Cardiff give off a pink glow that exaggerates any spots or blemishes on people’s faces.

Officials hope the lamps, normally used by beauticians, will slash the numbers of youths loitering in an area blighted by anti-social behaviour.

Councillor Neil McEvoy said: “It would be very much for areas of anti-social behaviour and where younger people tend to congre-gate. I know when I was that age I would have been put off if blemishes on my face were shown up – I am pleased that the police are being proactive.”

But the lights have been criticised by the National Youth Agency.

Development officer Peta Halls said: “Anything that aims to embarrass people out of an area is not on. Why waste limited resources on something which moves all young people out of an area? They will move on to somewhere else.”

No Coffee Allowed At Mums’ Coffee Meeting

ASTOUNDED mothers were told by their local council last month that hot drinks were banned at their morning cof-fee gatherings.

Volunteers have been ordered to change the name of the sessions from “Coffee and Play” to just “Baby Play”, reported the Daily Telegraph.

Because of the health and safety offi-cials’ ruling, parents attending the Stratford Children’s Centre in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warkwickshire, must now catch up over a plastic cup of water.

The weekly 90-minute sessions have been running for five years for children aged 18 months and under and no toddler has ever been injured in that time. But Warwickshire County Council introduced the ban after it ruled hot drinks were a hazard to toddlers.

Mother-of-three Candida Hillman, 40, who has used the centre for four years, branded the ban “ludicrous”. She said: “The situation they have in place now is more dangerous than before.

“Parents used to be able to have a hot drink with them while they watched their kids play but now they have to walk into a different room.”

Children’s centres across Warwickshire can now only serve hot drinks if they are in a separate area from the toddlers.

Vicky Kersey, children’s centre officer at the council, said: “To minimise any risk of scalding a child we have introduced a hot drinks policy at all of the county’s children’s centres.”

Actor Told: ‘Acting Not A Proper Job’

PROFESSIONAL actor Michael Sheldon was amazed to discover that a passport office worker had deemed his occupation as being “not a proper job”.

Sheldon, who was appearing in a West End production of Three Days in May, had

countersigned a passport form for his daugh-ter’s boyfriend last month. But the application was rejected after staff told him that Sheldon was not regarded as an acceptable referee, reported the Daily Telegraph.

Malcolm Sinclair, president of the ac-tor’s union Equity, wrote to Home Secretary Theresa May, saying that to be told acting was “not a proper job: was “simply unac-ceptable”.

He told The Stage newspaper the rejection was “staggering and something I felt I had to challenge. Unless we are told otherwise, we must take it that the views of a clerk in the passport office represent those of the Government,” he said.

“If it is the Government’s opinion that ‘acting is not a proper job’ then I think they should come out with it.”

The passport application had also been rejected due to an unsuitable photograph.

A spokesman for the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) said: “We will be investigating and looking at whether further staff training is required.

“The occupation of the counter-signatory is not a determining factor in considering a passport application.”

Smashing Time At Teen Party Sees Emin Artwork Broken

TEENAGE parties are legendary for leaving parents in a state of regret, but an art dealer felt it more than most last month when a Tracey Emin sculpture worth £20,000 was broken into pieces during his sons’ revelry in his London gallery.

Gallery owner Kenny Schachter says he will “do whatever it takes” to make good the damage to the piece entitled How I Wish I Slept.

Emin insisted she was not upset, saying: “Accidents happen” – but Schachter’s sons Adrian, 15, and Kai, 14, have been ordered to pay for the damage.

The party was held to launch a show of the teenagers’ art in the gallery, where it was on view alongside works by Emin, Damien Hirst, Keith Tyson, Sigmar Polke and George Condo.

The Emin sculpture, which consists of a glass box containing two bronze figures, was estimated to be worth between £10,000 and £20,000.

Its glass box smashed on impact and its concrete plinth was taken away for repair, but the bronze figures inside were undamaged. Schachter said: “It was just an overexcited kid, a girl who danced into it. I had three se-curity guards watching to prevent something like that happening. It’s a tragedy. Everyone is sickened by it. I will repair the plinth. I just want Tracey to be happy. I’ll do whatever it takes. It’s a valuable piece of art.”

Emin, in Miami, Florida, said: “Accidents happen. It was only the plinth that broke and the work is insured so I’m fine about it.”

Whispering Coach For Upper Class Virgin Travellers

HIGH-PAYING passengers on Virgin Atlantic will be ensured a “very quiet” experience during their flights, thanks to the airline hiring special voice coaches to train cabin crew to whisper.

Sir Richard Branson’s airline says the measure will have a “calming effect” on passengers in its new, fanciest ever Upper Class suite.

Crew are learning how to whisper to Upper

Class passengers more quietly on a special, day-long training course.

Virgin claims its Upper Class Dream Suite, being unveiled this month, offers the “largest and most comfortable beds in the sky”.

Passengers will pay around £6,000 for return flights from London to New York, reported the Daily Telegraph.

Virgin’s customer service training supervi-sor Richard Fitzgerald has been designated the new whispering coach. He says his goal is to ensure the most relaxing night’s sleep possible for the airline’s high rollers.

Fitzgerald said: “The crew are now trained to whisper at tones between 20 and 30 decibels due to its calming effect and the fact that it won’t disturb other passengers whilst lights are out. It is incredibly important that all Virgin Atlantic’s cabin crew have their skills honed in order to provide the most comfortable experience possible for our passengers.”

Uffington White Horse Takes On Jockey In Publicity Stunt

had a lovely little curl of golden hair at the back of his head. “I just could never bear to get it cut, not even his fringe. Now it flows all the way down his back to his bum and is very beautiful and soft. When we go out he is often mistaken for a little girl – people say ‘Isn’t she gorgeous’ but it has never bothered him.

“It was only when he joined school and had to have it tied back in a ponytail, for health and safety, that some of the other little boys began to make fun. They said he could not play with them because he looked like a girl. I’ve already cried at the thought of him having it cut, and will cry again when it actually happens.”

‘Greater Heights’ Halted In US For World’s Tallest Man

TREATMENT in the US has stopped the growth of Sultan Kosen, the world’s tallest man.

Doctors feel that Kosen, 8ft 3in has reached his maximum height following his treatment at the University of Virginia Medical Centre.

Kosen, from Turkey, is listed in the 2011 Guinness World Records at the tallest living man.

Special equipment had to be flown in from Sweden to fit Kosen’s larger skull, doctors said. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Kosen was placed on a new medication that could help control the production of growth hormone and stop his continued growth.

University officials later said that Kosen had stopped growing. The treatment will be noted in Guinness World Records.

“He’s done very, very well, fortunately,” said Dr Jason Sheehan, a University of Virginia Brain surgeon.

Egg-Stra-ordinarily Painful Laying For Chicken

SCHOOLGIRL, Harriet Whitaker, got a huge shock when she discovered the family chicken had laid an egg four-times larger than usual.

Popples, a two-year-old Rhode Island Red, laid the supersize egg measuring 5ins high, 8ins round and weighing 6.6 ounces.

Young Harriet, eight, found the egg when she made her daily check of the family’s chicken run, in Portsmouth. She said: “I’ve never seen an egg that size before. I thought an ostrich had been into the run overnight.”

Harriet even took the egg into school to show to her friends, who were equally amazed.

Mum Teresa, 36, said: “Poor Popples

must have been eggs-hausted and in pain after laying such a massive egg. I fed the chickens some scraps from our roast dinner the day before, so perhaps the cauliflower, broccoli and sprouts gave her a boost. I was amazed when Harriet first showed me the egg. She came running into the kitchen so excited. I said ‘oh my gosh – that must have been painful’.”

Crafty Fox ‘Uses Loaf’ In Mugging Of Man

WHAT WAS described as a “mugging” saw a fox force a man to hand over part of his grocery shopping last month.

Seb Baker was returning home from a local supermarket, carrying his bag, when he spotted a fox sitting on a kerb.

The animal then followed him into an alleyway and aggressively circled the man. Baker eventually offered the fox a loaf of garlic bread, which it took and quickly disappeared.

Baker, of Orpington, Kent, added: “I had expected it to run away. I thought a fox would be scared of a 15-stone man. But the fox started circling me and then jumped up, trying to grab my shopping bag.

Eventually I opened the bag and gave it a garlic loaf. He grabbed it and ran off.”

Looming ‘T-Rex Tree’ Shocks Country Walkers

SPIKE MALLIN and his wife Debbie were out on a lovely country walk last month when they looked up to see what appeared to be a Jurassic monster towering above the landscape.

The couple spotted the giant T-Rex in the Norfolk countryside – and then admired the shape as being … just a tree, which happened to be covered in winter ivy, making it look exactly like the frightening dinosaur, complete with eyes, mouth and spiked back.

The monster could be seen in a farmer’s field near Alby in North Norfolk, but like its ancestors the dinosaur was due to die out when the tree flowered, weeks later.

“I was walking with my wife Debbie and as we came round the corner we saw the T-Rex tree,” said Malin, 50, from Cromer, Norfolk.

“It really stood out and looked exactly like the dinosaur. It’s amazing, the head is just the right shape and it even has a jaw and small hands, just like the king of the dinosaurs. From a distance it looks like it is striding across the fields.”

Doctor Makes Four-Day Trip For Single Morning Surgery

A JOURNEY by land, sea and air, over a four-day span, was what it took for a doctor to cover a single morning shift last month.

Scottish physician Dr Jan Brooks had to travel to a neighbouring island from his home on Colonsay in the Hebrides for a three-and-a-half hour surgery on Jura.

The islands have an hour-long ferry link in summer, but not in winter so she had to go the long way round. The journey included return flights from Colonsay to Oban on the mainland, a 110-mile trip by car to catch a ferry to Islay and a further 70 miles by road and car ferry between

Islay and Jura. She had been asked at short notice to fill a half day gap between one locum leaving and the arrival of a replacement.

Argyll SNP MSP Michael Russell de-scribed the situation as “totally daft”.

NHS Highland said it had been made aware of the gap in advance and had asked another GP to cover.

A spokesman said: “However, this GP was at very short notice unable to provide that cover due to circumstances beyond their control and we had to find a replace-ment and this we did.”

IT HAS “galloped” across the prehistoric hill in Uffington, Oxfordshire (formerly Berk-shire) – but, never before with a jockey atop its back.

Sightseers to the 3,000 year old Uffington White Horse were surprised to see it had suddenly gained a rider last month.

The new addition to the prehistoric hill figure was a marketing stunt by bookmakers Paddy Power to celebrate the Cheltenham Festival, which was held last month.

It took a 20-strong team six hours to install the temporary 200ft wide and 110ft tall jockey – nicknamed Paddy – under the cover of darkness.

Paddy was made out of more than 200 metres of lightweight canvas, pre-cut into five separate pieces, secured to the ground by 500 tiny tent pegs.

Rean To Get First Hair Cut … At Five Years Old

SCHOOLYARD teasing urged a five-year-old boy’s parents to plan his first hair cut last month.

Rean Carter was told he looked like a girl by some of his classmates, so his mother has reluctantly agreed to have his almost waste-length locks cut

Rean, of Hylton Castle, Sunderland, has never had so much as a trim in his life, reported The Sun.

But his long flowing curly blond locks are now set for the chop after he declared he was sick of being mistaken for a girl.

Heartbroken mother Leeanne Smith, 30, said the haircut would raise money for charity. She said: “When Rean was born he

All Change At Kings CrossARCHITECT John McAslan, 58, has designed a concourse at Kings Cross station which took 15 years to build at a cost of £400m.

Described as a fundamental reconstruction of one of the thorniest logistical and architec-tural problems in London, his work has culminated in the opening of a striking new western concourse – a semi-circular building joined to the western side of the Grade I – listed Kings Cross train shed.

McAslan says that it is the longest single-span station structure in Europe, measuring 54 metres from centre to circumference and covering an area of about three Olympic swim-ming pools. Inside, its architectural expression is like some kind of reverse waterfall: a white steel grid that swoops up from the ground and cascades over one’s head towards 16 perimeter columns in a flurry of 1,200 solid and 1,012 glass triangular panels.

Underneath this huge concourse is a new Tube ticket hall. The steel castings at the top of the perimeter columns weigh 1.5 tonnes each. The concourse is capable of handling 55 million passengers a year – as many as Heathrow Airport.

So hopefully there won’t be so many cross passengers at Kings Cross in the future!THREE-MONTH CLOSURE FOR MALL

The Mall is due to shut down for more than three months for the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics, promising fears of a summer of traffic gridlock and discontent.

The road’s unprecedented closure is part of a wider lockdown because of the Games, with half of St James’s Park, also within a 32-acre no-go zone, in the heart of the capital.

Mayor Boris Johnson spoke of his anger over the restrictions, which were given plan-ning consent last year by Westminster Council, and he ordered London 2012 organiser, LOCOG, back to the drawing board to minimise disruption.

Prime Minister David Cameron, whose Downing Street home overlooks the affected site, has personally stepped in and told Olym-pic planners to keep any traffic disruption to a minimum.

An official source said “Mr Cameron said that he wanted everything possible done in order to reduce disruption. He was very clear that London residents and businesses must be able to carry on normally as much as possible.”

Games chiefs will seal off the Mall and park from June 20 with a 10ft high security fence. The London 2012 workforce will then move in to erect a 5,000 capacity grandstand finish on the Mall for the marathon, cycling and race-walk finishes.

The team will also be setting up the 16,000 seat beach volleyball court, the third largest Olympic venue, in Horseguards Parade.

That treatment of the Mall should confuse them all!SIXTH LONDON AIRPORT TAKES OFF

Stansted Airport has been told that a new

rival at Southend will give it a serious run for its money.

The challenge came as the first passengers passed through its new terminal following a £100m makeover.

EasyJet will fly to nine European destina-tions, including Barcelona and Malaga, from as little as £24.99.

The airline’s Chief Executive, Carolyn Mc-Call, claimed that it could offer passengers faster and cheaper connections to the capital than its Essex rival. At the opening of the terminal, she said “Stansted is always going to have much more capacity but this is a great airport, designed really well, point to point, and I think it is going to give Stansted a real run for its money.”

London Southend can currently take two million flights a year, but this could triple, she added. EasyJet will start with 70 departures a week, to Amsterdam, Alicante, Barcelona, Belfast, Faroe, Ibiza, Jersey, Malaga and Majorca. An Irish carrier, Aer Arann, is already operating up to 10 flights a week to Waterford. Stansted-based Ryanair acknowledged the challenge.

Southend has now increased its reputation from a seaside resort to an airside resort.

QUEEN LETS THE TRAIN TAKE THE STRAIN

The Queen shunned the Royal Train for the launch of her Diamond Jubilee tour of the UK in the latest sign of how the Monarchy is coping with the “Age of Austerity” – by letting the ordinary train take the strain.

Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and Duchess of Cambridge, she travelled from St Pancras to Leicester by East Midlands Trains – the first engagement in a four-month tour of every UK region.

Unfortunately, they could not be joined by Prince William, who was on his latest tour of duty in the Falklands.

While in Leicester, the Royal party toured schools, shops and factories and met many lo-cal people and local dignitaries. One young lad at a school said that although he was pleased to see “Kate”, he really missed not meeting Prince William, which is rather surprising – I would’ve preferred Kate!

MY, HOW TEA AT THE RITZ HAS CHANGED!

Tea at the Ritz – the traditional afternoon treat, has been popular for more than 100 years – until now.

For the first time since it opened in 1906, the hotel is ringing the changes and ditching “foreign” features, such as French pastries for

“Best of British” items ahead of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympic Games.

Victoria sponge, lemon meringue pie, Eton Mess, custard tarts and strawberry creams are among the sweets on offer, while the savoury ingredients have also undergone a revamp to give a contemporary British twist, with cara-way seed bread, shallots and horseradish.

Hotel bosses said that Tea at the Ritz – at £42 per person for traditional and £54 with a glass of champagne – remains one of the most “quintessentially British” pastimes.

The Ritz Manager, Guillaume Marly, said that the change was part of a move to act as guardians of British traditions, which will carry through to other parts of the hotel and its cuisine. He said “I want the food to bring back memories of a British childhood.”

It seems that at the Ritz you can have your cake and eat it too!

AWARDS EXPECTED TO HIT COMEDIES

One Man, Two Guvnors will have competi-tion from The Ladykillers at this year’s Olivier Awards, as the hit West End comedies bagged five nominations each last month.

Their potential haul is dwarfed, however, by the musical Matilda. The Roald Dahl adapta-tion has a total of 10 nominations, including a collective one for the four young girls who share the title role.

Kristin Scott Thomas, Jude Law, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller are all in the running for awards at the Royal Opera House next month, along with James Corden for best actor in the National Theatre’s One Man, Two Guvnors, which he is taking to Broadway.

Other nominated productions include the Old Vic’s Noises Off and the revival of Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path. English National Opera is up for outstanding achievement, against Mark-Anthony Turnage’s new ROH work, Anna Nicole.

Akram Khan’s rivals in the dance category will include the streetdance show Some Like It Hip Hop by ZooNation.

The awards will be held on April 15.SECRETS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

Secret doors and toxic plants feature in the design of Sherlock Holmes’ film director, Guy Ritchie’s, £6m period home.

Interior designer, Nicola Fontanella, who is overseeing the project, says “Ritchie has asked for a series of features befitting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective to be built into the Fitzroy Square property – not far from Baker Street.” They include concealed doorways and secret spaces hidden behind panels, while a room patched with exotic and poisonous plants is also said to be on Ritchie’s wish list.

Miss Fontanella said “He wants every-thing to look like it does in Sherlock Holmes films.”

The project, which also includes adding a basement and solar panels, should be finished by the end of the year when Ritchie is expected to move in with model Jacqui Ainsley, 30, who gave birth to their first child in September. Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes was a hit in 2009 and the sequel, A Game of Shadows, came out last year.

COLIN FIRTH’S “TERRIFYING” WWII ROLE

AWARD-WINNING actress Nicole Kidman, 44, who won the Oscar for best actress for The Hours in 2003, will co-star with British actor Colin Firth, 51, as his wife Patti in The Railway Man, set to begin filming in Scotland this month (April), then switching to Australia’s Gold Coast.

The movie is based on Eric Lomax’s auto-biography, covering his terrifying experiences as a prisoner of war by the Japanese in WWII, and his astonishing reconciliation 30 years later with one of his captors, a Japanese officer who participated in his torture.

Actor Jeremy Irvine, 21, from Camberley, Surrey – he costarred in War Horse – plays the younger Lomax, in the war scenes.

Patti took a major part in assisting her hus-band to overcome his psychological problems, during which, the officer regretted his actions and deeply apologised. Lomax forgave him, and today the “wounds” are healed for both.

It’s Oscar material in the offing.* * *

SACHA’S ASHES STUNT ‘URNS’ WORLD-WIDE ATTENTION

BRITISH comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, and his company Four by Two Films, has been signed to a three-year exclusive contract by Paramount Pictures, giving the studio the op-portunity to be first in making Cohen an offer for his future work, if they are interested.

Paramount which will be releasing Cohen’s new movie The Dictator on May 11, has also created a fund for him to develop new projects and seek new talent in the UK.

At this year’s Oscars, Sacha turned up on the red carpet carrying an urn, and wearing his Dictator costume as General Aladeen the star of the film. Hoisting the urn up, which was said to contain the ashes of Kim Jong II, Sacha said Kim had wanted to be “sprinkled over the red carpet.” Appearing to stumble, he poured the urn’s contents over TV presenter Ryan Seacrest’s suit and onto the red carpet. He was given a huge cheer, and was quickly hustled away by security. But his stunt gave him world-wide attention and much publicity for The Dictator.

* * *FILMGOERS in the UK flocked to their cinemas in 2011, pushing box-office revenues up 24 percent, to £37m. The uptrend is expected to continue with Hollywood filming in UK studios which brought them a record year in earnings, over £50m.

Scottish Cardinal Attacks Plans For Gay Marriage

THE HEAD of the Catholic Church in Scotland has fiercely attacked the British government’s plans to allow gay marriage, calling the proposals “madness.”

In an article for the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, Scottish Roman Catholic Cardinal Keith O’Brien accused the co-alition government of trying to “redefine reality.”

He called the plans “a grotesque sub-version of a universally accepted human right,” and said the government’s back-ing for marriage to include homosexual couples was “madness.”

Prime Minister David Cameron has openly advocated gay marriage. Later this month, Britain’s equalities minister will launch a consultation on how to change the legal definition of marriage to include same-sex couples.

While O’Brien conceded that arguing in favor of “traditional” marriage “risks one being labeled an intolerant bigot,” he said changing the definition of marriage would “deliberately” deprive children of the right to a mother or father and

“shame the United Kingdom in the eyes of the world.”

O’Brien also cast doubt on govern-ment assurances that churches would not be forced to perform gay marriages: “Imagine for a moment that the government had de-

cided to legalize slavery but assured us that ‘no one will be forced to keep a slave’,” he said. “Would such worthless assurances calm our fury? Would they justify disman-tling a fundamental human right?”

Margot James, the first openly gay female lawmaker from the ruling Conser-vative party, criticized the Cardinal’s use of “apocalyptic language” and accused him of scaremongering.

The Home Office said that the gov-ernment believes that “if a couple love each other” and want to commit to a life together they should “have the option of a civil marriage irrespective of their sexual orientation.”

Court: Right-To-Die Case Can Proceed

By Maria ChengIN A CASE that challenges Britain’s definition of murder, a severely disabled man who says his life has no “privacy or dignity” will be granted a hearing on his request that a doctor be allowed to give him a lethal injection.

Tony Nicklinson suffered a paralyzing stroke in 2005 that left him unable to speak or move below his neck. The former rugby player and corporate manager requires constant care and communicates largely by blinking, although his mind has remained unaffected.

“I am fed up with my life and don’t want to spend the next 20 years or so like this,” Nicklinson said in a statement.

In January, Nicklinson asked the High Court to declare that any doctor who kills him with his consent will not be charged with murder. Last month, a judge said the request may proceed, making it the first right-to-die case of its kind to get a hearing in a British court.

STABLEThe 57-year-old’s condition is stable,

though Nicklinson has refused since 2007 to take any life-prolonging drugs recommended by doctors, including heart medication or blood thinners.

The ministry of justice argued that granting Nicklinson’s request would re-quire changing the law on murder and that such changes must be made by Parliament. The government had applied to have the case dismissed.

In his ruling, Justice William Charles said Nicklinson was “now inviting the court to cross the Rubicon” and that his

case had “an arguable base.”Nicklinson argued that British law hin-

dered his right to “private and family life” – guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights – on the grounds that being able to choose how to die is a matter of personal autonomy.

“The decision to go to a hearing is quite a small step, but what’s tremendously sig-nificant is what Tony Nicklinson is asking for,” said Emily Jackson, a law professor at the London School of Economics. “Normally, it would be for Parliament to make any change to the law on murder, so it would be a very, very big deal for the court to make a change like this.”

SUFFERINGNicklinson’s wife, Jane, says the only

way to end her husband’s suffering is for him to die.

Nicklinson’s hearing could happen as early as this summer. It is expected to take at least five days.

Penney Lewis, a law professor at King’s College London, said the UK had become more receptive to allowing assisted suicide in recent years but not euthanasia.

“Granting Nicklinson a hearing does not mean euthanasia will be allowed, but it is a big step,” she said.

Ex-Top Policeman Says His Son Worked At Murdoch Title

By Raphael Satter

TWO FORMER Scotland Yard chiefs had their children do internships at Rupert Murdoch’s newspaper company, one of them testified last month, revealing yet another link between senior members of the country’s largest police force with its scandal-scarred press.

Former Commissioner Ian Blair said that his teenage son and that of his pre-decessor, Paul Condon, had both gained “work experience” at Rupert Murdoch’s News International, which used to publish the News of the World tabloid.

“It was a perfectly normal process,” Blair said, recalling that he thought at the time it was “the kind of thing that would excite most 15-year-olds.”

The nature of the work experience wasn’t made clear, but in Britain the phrase is generally used to mean brief, unpaid internships – typically a few days or a couple of weeks.

The revelation was yet another reminder

of the cozy ties enjoyed by senior Scotland Yard officials and senior members of the press – particularly the Murdoch press. It’s a relationship which critics say blinded police to the systematic wrongdoing at the News of the World , whose reporters spent years illegally eavesdropping on figures in the public eye.

ETHICSA judge-led inquiry into media ethics

has already heard evidence that Scotland Yard’s most senior officers routinely wined and dined with News of the World journalists who have since been snared by the revived police investigation into phone hacking at the now-defunct title.

Particular scrutiny was focused on former Assistant Commissioner John Yates, who had a close friendship with the paper’s ex-editor Neil Wallis and shared drinks with the paper’s ex-crime reporter, Lucy Panton.

Yates played a key role in rebuffing calls for an investigation into phone hack-ing back in 2009, something Blair said had

been a mistake.SYMBOLIC

Perhaps most symbolic was Scotland Yard’s decision to lend former News International chief Rebekah Brooks a retired police horse – an animal whose dis-tinguished riders included Prime Minister David Cameron.

The loan became an irresistible symbol of the privileged relationship Murdoch’s press enjoyed both with the police and Brit-ish politicians. Blair said it was possible he first suggested the idea of loaning a police horse to Brooks over lunch.

Brooks has since been arrested as well, one of dozens across the British establish-ment who’ve been caught up in the scan-dal. The issue resurfaced last year after it emerged that the News of the World had hacked into the phone of Milly Dowler, a missing schoolgirl who was later found murdered.Online:The inquiry’s website:http://www.levesoninquiry.org.uk/

Students In Britain Protest Strauss-

Kahn SpeechMORE THAN 100 students protested outside Cambridge University last month where a speech was delivered by Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former International Mon-etary Fund chief whose career collapsed after he was charged with sexual assault.

The 62-year-old French politician, often called DSK, was invited to speak at the university’s debating society despite calls for the event to be canceled.

Reporters were not allowed to attend the speech, but students who were there said Strauss-Kahn spoke about his time at the IMF and the financial problems fac-ing Europe. When asked about the sexual charges against him, he said he was not guilty of anything.

AWKWARD“Apart from that awkward question,

everything was good. Most people were respectful,” said Sara Velezmoro, an eco-nomics student.

Outside, protesters – who waved plac-ards proclaiming “DSK not welcome here” – said the 800-year-old university should not give a platform to a man with such a troubling attitude toward women.

“It’s got nothing to do with freedom of speech,” said student Francesca Wil-liams, 21. “They’re inviting a man who hates women. I don’t think DSK should be given the privilege of speaking in front of a private audience.”

A statement on the debating union’s website said the invitation was made well before Strauss-Kahn’s controversial departure from the IMF. His experience in French politics mean that he was “ex-ceptionally well qualified” to speak on the financial crisis and the French presidential election, it said.

A LONDON man is attempting to row from Miami to New York.

Lewis Colam doesn’t have a lot of rowing experience, but he says he wanted to do something more adventurous than the desk job he left behind in England. He’s inspired by explorers James Cook and Sir Francis Drake, and by TV personality and survivalist Bear Grylls.

Colam started on his 1,400-mile journey March 3.

Colam is planning to row for up to 18 hours a day and to sleep in his custom-made 15-foot rowboat.

When asked his estimated time of arrival in New York he said: “Months.”

Colam has dedicated his journey to raising money for Alzheimer’s research. He’ll blog about the trip at www.iamfinechallenge.org. His prog-ress is also illustrated here, and UJ readers can even ‘talk’ to Colam.

Addressing Business Secretary Vince Cable, he said: “The minister will no doubt be aware that the pasty is not only a staple, hearty meal but, in effect, employs thousands of people and brings millions of pounds into the Cornish economy. Will he give some clarity on whether we can avoid a pasty tax?”

Fellow Lib Dem and St Ives MP Mr George said: “On the sublimely funda-mental and seriously important issue of pasty taxes in Cornwall, let me reassure the honourable gentleman that we will be fighting them on the beaches.”BBC Budget Key Pointshttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17449501

Minister: Border Checks For Separate Scotland

HOME SECRETARY Theresa May says there may need to be border checks along England’s northern frontier if Scotland opts for independence.

May told BBC television last month that new border rules might be introduced if a separate Scotland chose to join Europe’s border-free travel zone.

Britain is not currently a member of the zone, which critics believe has made it easier for illegal immigrants to cross borders.

Scotland is scheduled to hold a referen-dum on independence before September 2014.

May said potential border checks and other issues “should be part of the debate” ahead of the vote.

Governments in London and Edinburgh are continuing to discuss details of the independence referendum.

Man Jailed Over Stolen Shakespeare Folio Dies

A FLAMBOYANT, unemployed antiques dealer jailed for handling a stolen first edition of Shakespeare’s plays has died, Britain’s Prison Service said.

Raymond Scott, 55, was serving an eight-year term at Northumberland Prison for possessing the rare volume of plays.

The prison service said Scott, who passed himself off as a wealthy playboy prior to his conviction, was pronounced dead after being found unconscious in his cell last month, and that the cause of death was to be investigated.

Scott was a cigar-loving, self-described alcoholic who was jailed in 2010 after he took the 1623 volume of plays to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, and asked to have it authenticated.

Experts there alerted police, who said

the folio had been stolen from a display case at Durham University in northern England in 1998.

Scott, who arrived for various court appearances in a horse-drawn carriage led by a piper and later in a silver limousine, claimed he had found the volume in Cuba. He denied all charges against him. His flashy persona made him prime fodder for the press.

Prosecutors said the collector drove a yellow Ferrari and posed as an inter-national playboy, despite living with his elderly mother on welfare benefits and amassing huge credit-card debts.

Amateurs Battle Malware, Hackers In UK Cybergames

By Raphael SatterAMATEUR cybersleuths have been hunt-ing malware, raising firewalls and fend-ing off mock hack attacks in a series of simulations supported in part by Britain’s eavesdropping agency.

The games are intended to pull badly-needed talent into the country’s burgeoning cybersecurity sector, according to former security minister Pauline Neville-Jones, who spoke at a closing ceremony held last month at the Science Museum in the English port city of Bristol.

“The flow of people we have at the moment is wholly inadequate,” she said, warning of a skills gap “which threatens the economic future of this country.”

The exercises, dubbed the Cyber Secu-rity Challenge, are intended to help bridge that gap, drawing thousands of participants who spent weeks shoring up vulnerable home networks, cracking weak codes and combing through corrupted hard drives in a series of tests designed by companies such as UK defense contractor QinetiQ and data security firm Sophos.

The competition was closed to cy-bersecurity professionals, and many of the 4,000-odd participants – such as the 19-year-old winner, Cambridge University student Jonathan Millican – were aspiring computer scientists. Others were engineers or simple hobbyists.

The challenge was supported in part by British signals intelligence agency GCHQ and Scotland Yard’s e-crimes unit – a sign of the government’s concern with support-ing a rapidly-developing field.

Senior GCHQ official Jonathan Hoyle made a brief speech, inviting Millican and other prize-winners to come visit the secretive organization’s headquarters in Cheltenham.

Australian State Toughens Law For

Muslim VeilsMUSLIM women in Australia’s most populous state will have to remove veils to have their signatures officially witnessed under the latest laws giving New South Wales officials authority to look under religious face coverings.

New South Wales state Attorney Gen-eral Greg Smith said in a statement last month that beginning April 30, officials such as justices of the peace and lawyers who witness statutory declarations or af-fidavits without making identity checks will be fined A$220 ($236).

“If a person is wearing a face cover-ing, an authorized witness should po-litely and respectfully ask them to show their face,” Smith said.

The face coverings also include mo-torcycle helmets and masks.

The laws are a response to a court case last year in which a Sydney woman was convicted of falsely claiming that a traffic policeman had attempted to remove her niqab – a veil that reveals only the eyes.

A judge overturned the conviction because the official who witnessed the false claim did not look under the veil of the person who made it, so the judge was not certain that the defendant was responsible.

Mystery Olympic Knitter ‘Spinning Yarn’ At The SeasideIT IS NOT often a 150ft knitted scarf turns up wrapped around a Victorian pier’s railings over-night.

But, that is exactly what happened in Saltburn, North Yorkshire last month. And the mystery knit-ter (or knitters) hasn’t stopped with just that one scarf. Previously they have decorated lamp-posts, railings and buildings throughout the town with a number of knitted figures.

The knitted creations incorporate a number of Olympic disciplines such as figures taking in everything from cycling to synchronised swimming and gymnastics.

Apparently, “Yarnbombing” is a growing craze that sees knitted items attached to public places as a kind of woollen graffiti.

Libya Wins Control Over Gadhafi Son’s

London HomeTHE LIBYAN government has won con-trol of a £10m London home owned by the third son of the country’s late dictator, Col Moammar Gadhafi.

Britain’s High Court ordered the British Virgin Islands company Capitana Seas Ltd, owned by Al-Saadi Gadhafi, to surrender control of the eight-bedroom Georgian-style house in north London’s Hampstead Garden Suburb.

Justice Oliver Popplewell said March 9 that the house had been “wrongfully and unlawfully” purchased in May 2009 with money taken from state funds.

Libya’s lawyer, Gregory Mitchell, told the court that the order would follow British, European, and international policy with regard to the return of Libya’s assets to its people.

Libya sued to regain the house after the late dictator was ousted last year.

Harry Potter Actor Jailed For Joining Riots

Alcohol Monitors/Tags For Drink

OffendersELECTRONIC monitoring and breath testing to force alcohol-fueled criminals to stop drinking were announced by the government last month.

Justice Minister Nick Herbert says offenders given “sobriety or-ders” will either wear tags that test their alcohol levels or have to take daily breathalyzer tests. Those who fail the tests face jail.

Herbert said that the monitoring – already in use in several US states – would ensure “that binge drinkers who commit crime sober up.”

The government has not an-nounced which regions will be first to introduce the plan. But London authorities have said they will start using bracelets that detect alcohol in perspiration on people convicted of drink-related offenses.

Legislation to permit such testing is now before Parliament.

A JUDGE has sent a cast member of the Harry Potter films to prison for taking part in rioting that flared across England last summer.

Judge Simon Carr sentenced Jamie Waylett, who played Hogwarts bully Vincent Crabbe in six of the films, to two years in jail.

Prosecutors said Waylett was part of a small gang that took part in the riots in north London on August 8.

A jury at London’s Wood Green Crown Court found Waylett guilty of violent disorder last month, but acquitted him of another charge of intending to destroy or damage property with a fire bomb he was holding.

The 22-year-old had already admitted handling a bottle of stolen Champagne from a supermarket during the riots.

Waylett has a previous conviction for growing mari-juana. Jamie Waylett

7,000 More Women Fitted With Faulty Implants

BRITAIN’S health ministry said last month an additional 7,000 women were fitted with potentially faulty French-made breast implants, raising the total in the UK to about 47,000.

The ministry said that the new cases follow confirmation by French authorities that implants manufactured before 2001 by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP, also may have contained non-medical grade silicone.

Previously, authorities had said that only implants made by PIP after 2001 were affected.

Britain has said women given the implants by the public National Health Service can have them removed for free, and that private surgeries should offer the same deal.

Those denied help by private clinics will receive a free assessment and pos-sible treatment.

Possible Private Control Of Roadways EnvisionedTHE GOVERNMENT is considering putting private enterprise in charge of the nation’s highways.

Prime Minister David Cameron was expected to give details of the proposal in a speech to the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Officials envision granting long-term leases to private operators; government revenues now devoted to highway construc-tion and maintenance would be channeled to the private companies, and tolls would be allowed only on new highways.

Britain has previously put the rail sys-tem and the water and sewage utilities in private hands.

Opposition Labour Party legislator Maria Eagle has criticized the proposal, saying the government would do better to recognize that it has cut investment in infrastructure too deeply and too fast.

* * *THERE’S death and destruction this month on the Street when freaky Frank Foster is found murdered, lying dead on the knicker factory floor. But whodunnit? There are five prime suspects lined up in the shape of Peter Barlow, Carla Connor, Michelle Connor, Sally Webster and Kevin Webster. Frank’s a nasty piece of work. He raped Carla, tried to rape Maria and lied through his teeth when he was up in court at his rape trial. His mum Anne is the only one who knows how evil her boy can truly be and so the smart money’s on Frank’s mum Anne as the killer.

Meanwhile, Julie finds out she’s pregnant but when she tells boyfriend Brian about the baby, he pulls a sniffy face, walks away and tells her he hopes that she has a nice life. Brian thinks Julie’s been playing away because he’s had the snip, the big V. The two of them go to the docs where Doctor Carter confirms that the snip, the big V, isn’t always a success and tests can be done to prove Brian’s the dad.

Elsewhere, at Roy’s Rolls Sylvia prepares to leave, to swap the Street for the States when Milton offers to whisk her away. “I’ve got a first class ticket for a first class dame,” he croons and it’s enough to turn Sylvia’s head, a little anyway. She breaks the news to Roy, hoping that he’ll say he doesn’t want her to go, but he doesn’t, not Roy. “Just say the word and I’ll stay,” she says – but the word remains unsaid. And so she goes, as far as

the airport – and then she comes back. “I can’t be doing with faucets and closets and pants, not at my age,” she moans and gripes about American life.

Lewis the charming cad returns and knocks Audrey’s romantic socks off, again. But is he a changed man or just playing her for a fool, once more? He tries to win her back using every charming caddish trick in the book. More potent still, it’s every charm-ing caddish trick in Lewis’ little black book. Deirdre is less forgiving and thumps Lewis by the pumps when she spots him in the pub.

Teenage mum Katy isn’t coping well with the baby and no-one seems to notice the trouble she’s in. She drags in little Faye to babysit while she nips to the shops and it goes horribly wrong. Faye decides to grill cheese on toast which quickly turns into cheese on fire. And then she manages to lock herself out of the house while the fire rages and the baby cries inside. Faye runs to get Owen who breaks down the door, saves the baby and turns off the grill. The cheese, I’m afraid, has had it.

Over at Steve and Tracy’s house, Steve tells his missus he’s moving out to live alone in the Streetcars flat. Tracy assumes this means she’s getting No 13 all to herself but she assumes wrong when Steve moves the wonderful Beth and her even more wonder-ful son Craig into the house with her. Beth sets her sights on Steve, thinking there’s chemistry between them and Tracy does her best to encourage this, knowing full well that Steve will run a mile. In a wonderful comic scene Steve manages to wriggle free, this time any road. Beth’s an excellent addition to Coronation Street and her ever-silent, ever-eating son Craig, played by young actor Colson Smith, is comedy gold.

And ending on a very happy note, Dennis Tanner proposed to Rita this month and the lady with the big red hair, the siren of the Street, red-hot Rita, she said yes!

IN THE SQUARE, the more things change, the more they stay the same (ain’t it the truth) …

The Mitchells have trouble with the truth: Ben’s exaggerations to DI Marsden have put Phil in jail good an proper. And as he sits there he is refusing to see Shirley, thinking her dis-loyal because she knew Ben was his stalker and didn’t tell him. Everyone keeps trying to get Ben to change his story (even Ian) but he won’t budge, even though he admits that he lied to stitch Phil up, as revenge …

Ian has women trouble: Ian has bigger problems with Mandy: Lucy hates her Dad’s finance but Mandy is on to Lucy as well, so she’s thwarted all Lucy’s efforts to catch her out. So far. But she has a better idea (or so she thinks). Seeing mysterious texts on Mandy’s phone, Lucy thinks they are from a man, so she takes the phone and starts sending texts to this mystery person (pretending to be Mandy), asking him to come meet her at her new house. But it isn’t a man. It is Mandy’s horrifically abusive, alcoholic mother who turns up and now

won’t leave …Romance trouble: Whitney breaks Fatboy’s

heart; breaking up with him and taking up with Tyler … Meanwhile Amira is taking Anthony for all she can get, stringing him along for as long as she can, as long as he keeps buying her things (things he can’t afford). She finally sleeps with him and now wants to leave the Square, taking baby Yasmin with her, and away from Syed, just as Christian returns and he and Zainab make peace …

Family trouble: Roxy and Jack go to court over custody of Amy, and Roxy wins. She was willing to share custody, but in the last few months there has been so much bad blood stirred up by the demonic, long-lost Branning brother, Derek, that it becomes impossible … But now that that is over, Max and Roxy are flirting something fierce with each other, all while Tanya is still trying to recover from her cervical cancer treatments, and while Lauren has become a blackout drunk …

But wait, there’s something new in the air: Heather is happy? Well, sort of. She’s all loved up with Andrew and their romance had been going along swimmingly. But now that they’re engaged a different side of him is coming out, and it’s a darker side (natch): We (and Heather) are seeing aspects of his personality that are angry and controlling, and there are hints from his mum that this has been a problem in the past. He’s jealous of Heather’s friendship with Shirley, while

Shirley, for her part keeps trying to blissfully push his buttons – putting Heather in the middle. But when Heather sees his angry side, instead of ending it, she allows him to bully her, while pretending everything is OK, and goes on planning the wedding. Somehow, we don’t think this will end well (when does it ever?). The road to romance never runs smooth when it runs through Albert Square! …

Possible ‘Racist Prevention Effect’ In Heart Tablet

A SIDE-EFFECT of a regularly-used heart disease and blood-pressure drug could be the lowering of racist emotions, a study suggests.

Volunteers given the beta-blocker Propranolol, used to lower heart rates, scored lower on a standard psychologi-cal test of “implicit” racist attitudes.

They appeared to be less racially prejudiced at a subconscious level than another group treated with a “dummy” placebo pill.

Scientists believe the discovery can be explained by the fact that racism is fun-damentally founded on fear, reported the Daily Telegraph.

Propranolol acts both on nerve cir-

cuits that govern heart rate, and the part of the brain involved in fear and emotional responses. The drug is also used to treat anxiety and panic.

Experimental psychologist Dr Sylvia Terbeck, from Oxford University, who led the study, said: “Our results offer new evidence about the processes in the brain that shape implicit racial bias.

“Implicit racial bias can occur even in people with a sincere belief in equal-ity.”

Two groups of 18 participants took part in the study which involved cat-egorising positive and negative words, and pictures of black and white indi-viduals, on a computer screen.

Hundreds Salute UK Soldiers Killed

In AfghanistanMORE THAN 2,000 people in Britain gathered last month to pay their respects as the bodies of six soldiers killed in Af-ghanistan returned to the UK

Well-wishers and servicemen lined the streets in Carterton, Oxfordshire, as a con-voy of hearses bearing the men’s coffins paused at a memorial garden near a Royal Air Force base.

The soldiers, aged 19 to 33, were patrol-ling near the border between Helmand and Kandahar provinces when their vehicle was hit by a bomb on March 6.

Their deaths brought to 404 the number of British forces who have died since the war in Afghanistan began in 2001.

7th-Century Teen Found Buried In Her BedARCHAEOLOGISTS excavating near Cambridge have stumbled upon a rare and mysterious find: The skeleton of a 7th-century teenager buried in an ornamental bed along with a gold-and-garnet cross, an iron knife and a purse of glass beads.

Experts say the grave is an example of an unusual Anglo-Saxon funerary practice of which very little is known. Just over a dozen of these “bed burials” have been found in Britain, and it’s one of only two in which a pectoral cross – meant to be worn over the chest – has been discovered.

One archaeologist said the burial opened a window into the transitional period when the pagan Anglo-Saxons were gradually adopting Christianity.

The rationale behind bed burials re-mains a matter of speculation.

“The word in Old English for ‘bed’ and ‘grave’ is the same because it’s ‘the place where you lie,”’ Dickens said. “It is interesting that you have that association. You’re lying there – but just for a much longer time, I suppose.”Online: University of Cambridge: http://www.cam.ac.uk/

IT IS exactly thirty years since the outbreak of the Falklands Conflict. On April 2, 1982, Argentina launched an invasion of the islands. They were to lose 665 servicemen while 258 Brits perished in the 74 days that elapsed before the Argentinians surrendered.

Argentina was entirely responsible for the wretched little war. Their military dictatorship under General Galtieri was in deep political trouble at home caused by a dire financial cri-sis and flagrant violation of human rights. He hoped that by capitalising on his compatriots’ national pride and abiding sense of injustice over Britain’s power over the Falklands – the Islas Malvinas, as they are known in Buenos Aires – he would win back popularity with a successful invasion.

Actually, there is a history of border dis-putes in South America. One such argument started back in 1958 when Argentina claimed ownership of the Beagle Channel between it and Chile down at the bottom of Cape Horn. This led to an unlikely outbreak of lighthouse attacks on the uninhabited island of Snipe. First the Chileans built a lighthouse there, then the Argentinians shelled it and replaced it with one of theirs. Then the Chileans blitzed that out of existence and stuck up another one of their own.

After six months peace broke out when a truce was signed which saw the withdrawal of the Argentinian troops and the removal of the lighthouse.

QUARRELHowever, soldiers are invariably at a

loss with what to do with their arms when there’s nothing to kill apart from time, and the quarrel broke out all over again in 1978. This time the UN were called to adjudicate with her Britannic Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, delivering the binding judgement: Chile were in the right once again.

Four years later, Galtieri resumed his ownership disputes, and the fact that Queen Elizabeth laid a claim on the Falklands prob-ably added a little extra spice to the quarrel.

The Falklands conflict started on March 19, 1982 when a group of Argentinian soldier, posing as scrap merchants, raised the blue and white flag over an abandoned whaling station on the island of South Georgia. The largest whale ever caught was landed here in Grytvyken in 1912 (110 feet long!), possibly the most important thing that happened in South Georgia since Captain Cook circum-navigated the island in 1775 and claimed it

Thirty Years Since The Falklands Conflict

for Britain, naming the place after his king, George III.

Anyway the scrap metal merchants’ oc-cupation did not last long – four and a half weeks to be exact – before a mixed force of SAS, SBS and marines booted them out by way of a prelude to recapturing the Falklands.

MISTAKENGaltieri had mistaken the British govern-

ment’s intentions in the south Atlantic, interpreting the proposed withdrawal of the survey ship, HMS Endurance, in 1981 from the southern seas as evidence that Britain no longer envisaged a presence down there and furthermore would have no way of protecting the Falklands.

The truth was Maggie Thatcher was en-gaged in a cost-cutting exercise and took her eye off developments in the south Atlantic, an excellent example of the cock-up view of history. She was obliged by a combination of the taunts of the Labour leader, Michael Foot, as by the jingoistic sentiments of her own backbenchers and her growing electoral unpopularity, to announce the formation of a Task Force which set off to liberate the distant islands.

It was a stupendous feat and one which achieved success against all the odds. The US Navy were convinced that a successful invasion of the islands by the British was “a military impossibility”.

In retrospect, it is easy to see the cam-paign as the closing act in an imperial drama that was played out over the 400 years be-tween the first and second Elizabeths. It was fought and won almost entirely by ourselves, happily without too much bloodshed. And the following year, Maggie was rewarded with a resounding General Election victory.

INHOSPITABLEThirty years later we are still there, with

a British garrison permanently stationed on these inhospitable islands thousands of miles from our shores. For us here back in northern Europe, the Falklands have slipped into the past but one senses that for Argentina the wounds are still very fresh.

The routine deployment of Prince William on helicopter rescue duties in February was viewed as a hostile act by the Argentines, triggering a number of ugly responses.

Maybe without an Argentinian invasion it would have been possible to shuffle off responsibility for the islands. Indeed, ac-

cording to an Argen-tinian press report in mid-March, Jim Callaghan’s govern-ment secretly offered to share ownership with General Peron back in 1974 with both flags flying over islands. However, he died 20 days after the offer and Britain

immediately withdrew the offer since they couldn’t trust his widow.

Today that is not an option. British lives have been sacrificed and even the Treaty of Lisbon recognises Britain’s right to the Falklands. The islanders themselves have claimed the right to self-determination, while Argentina has retained its claim on the terri-tory but commits itself to peaceful means to take over the islands.

Related Factoid: On a much less serious, but certainly entertaining and educational note on our lives: The first Union Jack Newspaper (and the only one ever with a full date on the cover), was published on … you guessed it…April 2, 1982.

Cry God for Harry, England and St George”

– William Shakespeare, Henry V

AAAH TO be in England now that Spring is here … not sure if that is the same anymore with all the weird changes in the weather, but I do remember April being a delightful month with all the daffodils, tulips and bulbs coming out, especially when I was at Cambridge and seeing the banks covered in a delight of flowers. I always enjoyed April especially as it also my birthday (yeah fel-low Aries!), but also St George’s Day on the 23rd, and Shakespeare’s Day the same day. Not that it is a national holiday or anything, which I think a shame, not so much for Will, but certainly for St George. My internet resources say that St George was actually born in Turkey in the Third Century was a Christian, and a very brave Roman soldier. He was made England’s patron saint in the 14th century; some questions lay there as it has not been proven that he actually was ever in England, although some studies say he was in Glastonbury and Caerlon. He is always pictured riding a white horse, with a white shield and red cross, slaying a dragon, apparently trying to save a princess … however as we may never be able to prove this, it is still dramatic!. There is not a general celebration of St Georges’ Day (although we at the Sarasota British Club had a few celebrations, but then it doesn’t take much to get a bunch of Brits together for food and libations does it!)

There are several celebrations noted on the ’net including a Michelin star restaurant in London, who is launching a beer and food matching menu, featuring British beers, and foods such as Mussels and smoked haddock appetizer, Cooked Pork Belly and a chocolate fondant dessert with Sam Smith’s cherry beer … I know I should think anything cherry is good (being my last name) but a beer? Other towns doing celebrations are Croydon old Town, Buck-ingham, Staffordshire have a parade, and Tamworth in Surrey. I hope there are more, however the focus this year of course is on the upcoming Jubilee and Olympics.

OK, really a big part of April is Easter, which is pretty early this year, and there are so many traditional Easter dishes, which I have featured several times. I couldn’t think of what to feature this month that was a

treat, until the other day when I had tea with friends and our lovely Scottish hostess who served Empire Biscuits with her delec-table delights. Empire biscuits were often requested years ago by early readers, and I just couldn’t find them until we visited a tea room in Lanark, near Glasgow in 2000, where they were available. I explained to the owner that I had been searching for the recipe when an elderly customer kindly commented that I wouldn’t find them in a cook book as Empire biscuits, as they used to be called German Biscuits, then after WWI, the name was changed. So again I present 12 years later my version of this treat using my basic shortbread recipe – including cherries! I hope you like my version.

Empire Biscuits

1 cup butter1 cup sugar4 cups all-purpose flourRaspberry Jam4 Tbsp icing ( confectioners) sugar1-2 tsp water18 glace cherries cut in half

Cut butter into dry ingredients (can use a food processor) until evenly mixed, don’t overdo though

Spread out and pat firmly evenly into a lightly greased baking sheet. Mark round with a 2-3 inch round cutter. Sprinkle lightly with sugar and bake 30-40 minutes at 325 degrees until lightly golden. Remove from oven, let cool slightly then cut again the rounds into the shortbread. When cool, remove rounds to a cooling rack (Save the rest and use as a base for pies instead of graham cracker crumbs). Mix icing sugar and water until smooth, but not too thin, and spread over half of the rounds, top with half a glace cherry. Before serving, spread un-iced half with raspberry jam, and top with the iced half. Yield about 18-24.

Thus tension remains but that is nothing compared with the continued involvement in Afghanistan the Great Game started in 1837, the final whistle of which still seems many years hence. Then there’s what to do about Syria and beyond that what’s going to happen in Iran.

FRANK CARSONI can’t close without a mention of the death

of Irish comedian Frank Carson who buried all his jokes with the same epitaph: “That’s a cracker. It’s the way I tell ‘em.”

He had health problems towards the close of his life but it was all grist to his humour mill: “My iron tablets are bloody awful. Every morning I wake up facing north.” He worried about his wife because once when he had a heart attack, she wrote for an ambulance. He liked Irishness, like the one about Murphy whose wife gave birth to twins – he demand-ed to know who the other man was.

Perhaps my favourite is about Murphy as well. “The IRA threw a bomb through their front window where they were watching TV. The explosion blew them into the garden. Come to think of it, it was the first time they’d been out together for twenty years.”

He was a cracker, the way he told [email protected]

Argentina To Open Museum Dedicated To Falklands

PRESIDENT Cristina Fernandez says a new museum dedicated to the Falk-lands Islands will honor Argentine marines killed trying to reclaim them from Britain 30 years ago.

Fernandez announced details of the $20m museum last month. She said it would honor the more than 300 marines killed in the sinking of the warship Belgrano.

Diplomatic and commercial ten-

sions are currently rising over the disputed islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas, as the anniversary of the two countries’ brief war over them approaches.

Fernandez said the museum would be in the former navy school that served as a detention and torture center during Argentina’s 1976-1983 military dictatorship. She said its inau-guration was set for August 2013.

The Best Kept Secret...

2800 S. Harbor Blvd, Oxnard, Ca

805-985-9300www.thelookoutchannelislands.com

PAUL WRIGHT has once again taken the helm as President of the BABCLA (British American Business Council Los Angeles) a position he held from 2005-2007. He stepped down after the highly successful BABC Transatlantic Conference in LA featuring 51 leading speakers. Details can be seen at www.babc2007.com

The BABC is a vitally important organiza-tion that helps solidify the communication between companies both here and in the UK, which creates the opportunity for many get-togethers which would not normally be available.

Paul is a superb chap, we have known and liked for many years. An English Barrister and California Attorney by profession, that hails from Harrogate, North Yorkshire. He’s

dynamic, forward thinking, gets results, down to earth, and a fun bloke to be around. If you think you don’t know him, he’s the one hog-ging all the national TV spotlight welcoming Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge during last year’s visit to LA.

In February he hosted Lord Coe, Chair-man of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, for a breakfast of 120 business leaders that received extensive publicity. (news clip can be seen at www.babcla.org). Lord Coe, on his return to LA where he won a gold and silver medal in the 1984 Olympics, reported that “preparations for London 2012 are on schedule and on budget.”

Some upcoming BABC events Paul recommends are: April 20 in Malibu is a major music evening featuring leading British musicians, followed June 10 with the Four Seasons Hotel, Westlake Village hosting the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Celebra-tion www.babcla.org

The BABCLA has formed a number of new Sectors, including the BABC LA Transatlantic Law Council; the BABC LA Transatlantic Financial Council; and a Young Executives Group this is named Commonwealth House. Other sectors are in the process of being formed.

With growth and the future in mind, Paul has enlisted the help of young, energetic Brits including James Langridge, who set sail with an event held at the totally modern and refurbished, The London West Hollywood, just off the Sunset Strip, and certainly sets precedent for luxury accommodations and service, with a tie-in to Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant and bar, where the event was held. A question we get asked a lot: where can you stay in LA, yet be centrally located? The London is your best answer complete with the night life within walking distance, on Sunset Strip.

James Langridge, who’s now heading the new division of Commonwealth House, welcomed a host of dynamic business lead-ers from several well-known companies: Matthew Douglas, VP & branch manager

of HSBC Santa Monica; Richard Yemm of Wolfsdorf Immigration Law Group in Santa Monica; Tony Tarpey, marketing director of SmartSoft; and Daniel Ben-Efraim of The London Hotel, plus JP Morgan; UKTI; Capital Partners; The Financial Times; Bal-lantine’s PR; Docusource, a leading provider of office equipment, service, and software, just to name a few.

And sorry guys, I’ve been saving the best for last, account manager Debra Dilger of NBC LA who was enthusiastically promot-ing the UK and London 2012 Games and of course garnering sponsorship. “Will there be anyone left at NBC during the Games,” I asked. “No! We all want to go,” Debra said.

“Can you get me a couple of tickets for the Jay Leno on the Tonight Show. I’ll run the camera while everyone is in the UK.” “For you Leo, anything!” I like that attitude! James, you’re off to a good start. We had a great evening and it accomplished its goal; do business and have fun while doing it!

For hundreds of years High/Main Street was the hub of business, social, eating out. It then became more convenient to shop and park at malls, shopping centers, and eat

at franchised food chains. Extending that thought we might as well not talk: but email me, or Facebook and Twitter. We could all live a much faster, better life!

Fortunately, there are a lot of die-hards out there who stubbornly believe that the pubs, shops, and High Street still matter. I called Lynne at The Olde Ship in Santa Ana. How’s the economy treating you? She responded, “We’ve been pleasantly surprised how business picked up last November and has continued steadily since. And with www.BritWeek.org the end of April, The Queens Golden Jubilee Celebration, the Olympics, we’re looking forward to a very good year!”

OK. David Kidd at You Say Tomato in San Francisco. Have you been suffering? “Well, actually no, Leo, we’re not. We’re very lucky. Our customers have been amazingly loyal. You can always do more, but basically no grumbles.”

How about Michael Bennett at The British Connection in Torrance. Are you ready to throw the cat out and run away to sea? “No. Business is steady. Improving in fact. Our problem is getting the goods from the UK. They are sitting on the dock. From what the

wholesaler says, the FDA won’t clear it as they’re short of staff, or so we’re told. Which doesn’t make sense, as we’ve had the same problem for years. Oh, and Julie has returned from the UK. She couldn’t resettle after her husband died of cancer. And like the rest of us, has become too American!”

Mac, at Mac’s’s Fish and Chips in Santa Barbara said, “Business has been very good in our first 18 months. But business has been out the door since being on the Food Networks Diner’s Drive-ins, & Dives in January.”

Cameron Palmer from Cameron’s Inn in Half Moon Bay: “A marked improvement from the last three years. More people are out on the road. A lot of foreign visitors and they’re spending. In fact, we’re expanding and opening a new camp ground right next to the Pub.” That’s growth, right?

How about San Diego’s Shakespeare’s Pub? Manager Ruth Thomas said “We’re noticing a definite improvement in the economy, its turning the corner, and we’re really looking forward to the summer.” Just talking to her lifted my spirits, Ruth, you’re delightful. A great way to start my day! I’d be off to Shakey’s for a pint with Ruth if I could just afford the gas, which effects, of course, the whole economy.

It affects everything. The first thing any op-position party or us does is blame the Presi-dent. Watching the Ed Show on MSNBC in an interview with Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) one of my favorite states, pointed out a couple of facts: “Domestic oil is at its highest level in eight years; there are more oil rigs working in the US than the whole world combined; and that there’s more gas avail-able today than has been over the last three years. Demand is far less today, so there’s no supply problem.

How much would be saved if we stopped the endless speculation? Goldman Sachs es-timates 56 cents a gallon, by their figures.

My thoughts: The problem is “Selfish-ness.” Taxpayers bailed out Wall Street, right? Without oversight they are doing exactly the same thing all over again that got us into this mess! Are we so dumb and such a bunch of lemmings? It’s inevitable that we’ll end up in the same place again. Our wages and profits, or lack of, have stayed the same, while Wall Street’s profits are up 380 percent. This is a recipe for disaster and watch. It will bring down the economy again like a house of cards if something isn’t done. A good start would be to reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act of 1929, which was repealed in 1999. Enough is enough is enough. This planet is not about the one percent. It’s about all of us!!

April – Union Jack celebrates its 30th An-niversary!!

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

What A Tax Treaty Doesn’t Do!OVER THE past few weeks I have had a number of telephone calls from people with questions about including UK income on their US tax returns. There is often a feeling that if income has had tax deducted from it in the UK, for example bank interest or dividends, it has been taxed and therefore does not need to be included in the US return.

I’m sure you can feel where this is lead-ing – unfortunately, the starting-point for US tax is that it applies to worldwide income. Whilst I’m willing to try, it is difficult to think of anything in the UK that isn’t caught by the term “worldwide income”!

But, my telephone enquirer suggests, what about the Double Tax Treaty between the US and the UK? Surely that must give relief, so that something that has been taxed in one country won’t be taxed in the other?

Now I’m a positive person and I don’t like being the harbinger of doom and gloom, but a tax treaty is not really interested in making sure people aren’t taxed twice on their income. A tax treaty (which after all, is negotiated by tax authorities) is much, much more concerned that nothing should be free of tax in both countries. And, not surprisingly, the treaty does not suggest that the taxpayer can choose where income is taxed!

Tax treaties negotiated by the US include another surprise, known as the “savings clause”. (If you want to look at it, this is Article 1(4) of the US/UK Treaty.) This clause allows both tax authorities to tax citizens and resi-dents as if the provisions in the treaty did not exist. Generally, the UK only taxes residents, so this has little application to the UK side

of the treaty, but if you are a US taxpayer it confirms that all income should be included on a US Return.

Even if you claim what is known as a “treaty position” for your US taxes, this doesn’t mean you don’t have to tell the IRS about the income. You have to include a form 8833 with your Return which gives the IRS details about the amount, who paid it to you and the part of the treaty you have used to reach the conclusion you do not have to pay US tax on it.

As I’m sure you have worked out by now, there are not many of these opportunities! One is if you receive a tax-free lump-sum from a UK pension. This really can be tax-free in both countries! Make the most of this one, because it may be the beginning and end of US tax benefits the treaty offers you. There are slightly more opportunities open to people with visas than to green card holders or US citizens, but none of them are over-generous.

What the treaty does clarify however, is that most of your income should not be taxed in the UK at all. And this is why, the better arrangement is to make sure you have told your banks and investment companies you are living overseas! The UK tax deducted from you can then be reduced – and just maybe, you won’t feel quite so bad about having to include it on your 1040!

Mary-Heather Styles is a truly weird, but very friendly individual who loves sorting out tax problems! She can be con-tacted at (602) 845-1420 or at [email protected].

Man Charged Over Dog Mauling Of PolicePOLICE say a man has been charged over a dog mauling in London that put five police officers in the hospital.

Scotland Yard said March 23 that 25-year-old Pierre Robinson will appear in court under the Dangerous Dogs Act for “allowing the dog to be dangerously out of control.”

Three police officers are still hospital-ized after a “pitbull-type” animal attacked them when they raided a house to arrest Robinson.

A police unit later shot the dog dead at the scene in east London.

Wedding Crasher:

Queen Drops In On Ceremony

THE QUEEN has become a wedding crasher.

The monarch dropped in moments after the nuptials of John and Frances Canning at Manchester Town Hall in northern England March 23.

The newlyweds said the Queen chatted and posed for wedding photographs. The Queen and her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, were visiting the venue for lunch at the same time the wed-ding took place.

“It was very special – it was so lovely that she took the trouble to speak to us,” bride Frances Canning told The Sun newspaper.

The 48-year-old groom knew before-hand that the Queen would be visiting the town hall, and jokingly wrote to Buckingham Palace to invite the monarch, the tabloid reported. He received a polite reply declining the invitation, but palace officials secretly arranged the meeting, the paper said.

The 44-year-old bride was impressed the Queen addressed them by their first names.

“She said I looked lovely and she want-ed to wish us all the best for the future.

“We’re going to have to get a bigger wedding album now,” she was quoted as saying.

Teacher Accused Of Harassing German NeighborsA MATH teacher has been charged with harassment for allegedly subjecting his German neighbours to wartime music and Nazi salutes.

Prosecutors say Geoffrey Butler caused Reinhard and Kathryn Wendt four years of misery with broadcasts of The White Cliffs of Dover, Rule Britannia and the Dambusters March.

Lawyers at Medway Magistrates’ Court said that relations between the

neighbors soured after the Wendts moved in next to Butler in the village of Lower Upnor, southern England, in 2007.

Butler and Reinhard Wendt eventu-ally came to blows in a dispute over a small piece of land.

Prosecutor Alistair Dickson said Butler “decided to make their lives a misery be-cause of Mr Wendt’s German origin.”

Butler denies harassment.

UNLESS YOU’VE been isolated by Somali pirates, you’ll have heard of the latest British eruption since Susan Boyle stumbled into our life in that yellow dress and bad hair: One Direction, the British boy band created by Simon Cowell, is Florida-bound. They are the only UK band ever to debut at Number one with their first album. “It’s humbling” said 18-year-old bandmember Harry Styles. “We’re just five normal British boys who’ve been given this opportunity, so we’re making a point of working very hard.” And learning to shave. Cowell declared himself proud and excited. I declare him richer. So tell the teenagers in your life their hearthrobs play Tampa June 29, Orlando June 30 and Ft Lauderdale on July 1, 2012. Details on their official website www.onedirection-music.com

We ask that you dress appropriately for this special event in red and white. BYOC – Bring your own crown.” Phone British organiser John Crapper on (727) 644-6094 if you wish to attend.

To book call President Roy Yates (954) 942-7330. Note: Lighthouse Point is a few miles northeast of Ft Lauderdale.

n FT LAUDERDALE (Davie ): The Brit-ish Marketplace (954) 584-8888 with its attached English tearoom has announced innovative events for local Brits and seeks your input. Says genial expat owner David Williams: “April 15, 2012 is the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Since there will be a lot of hype with the release of a 3D movie, TV documentaries and the opening of the museum in Ireland, our shop has a range of Titanic memorabilia like teapots, mugs, jigsaw puzzles, books, games and more – maybe the only place in South Florida with this merchandise. Also we now have LIVE British TV with 15 chan-nels and plan tea parties to enjoy live UK events like Royal Ascot (with all the hats), Wimbledon, the Queen’s Jubilee, London Olympics and so on. We’re also introducing High Tea theme evenings where Brits can gather to watch episodes of Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders – sepa-rate evenings for each programme. If your readers have other event ideas we’d love to hear them. Because, as you always say Patricia, “A room full of Brits is never dull.” See British Marketplace ad this issue.

n POLO: The sport of English princes. April 26-29 – Miami’s Annual International Polo On The Beach. The Title sponsor this

year is Maserati, which will display its mar-vellous motors alongside the thoroughbred horses and uber-glamorous guests. Oceans-ide on South Beach you can enjoy three days of international polo, with male and female players from England, Argentina, USA and elsewhere playing right on the sands. The MC is a seasoned professional English announcer. This event started in 2002 and is the world’s largest and most prestigious Beach Polo tournament. After the chukkers have been played and the sun goes down, the action continues all around South Beach with sophisticated parties/dinners and a VIP tent. I’ve been a few times, albeit as mere press, and recommend it for top people-ogling. Info and tickets on www.miamipolo.com or call (305) 538-3809.

Brother Of Murdered Soap Star Arrested

JUST TWO days after the dismembered body of former Eastenders star Gemma McCluskie was found, her brother was arrested in connection with the murder.

McCluskie’s headless torso was dragged from the Regent’s Canal in London, and divers were still searching for other body parts.

McCluskie’s brother, Tony, 35, was charged with murder and appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court. Officers had previously raided the East London home that the man shared with his sister and their mother.

McCluskie starred in Eastenders as Kerry Skinner on more than 30 occa-sions in 2001. Her character arrived in Walford as a friend of Zoe Slater and the great niece of the late Ethel Skinner. She briefly dated Robbie Jackson and got him to propose to her.

After Miss McCluskie’s disappearance, friends and family members had been car-rying out searches in the area and handing out leaflets.

Co-stars Brooke Kinsella and Natalie Cassidy both appealed for help finding her on Twitter.

Kinsella, who has become a prominent anti-knife crime campaigner since her brother Ben was murdered in 2008, had tweeted: “Gemma McCluskie has been MISSING from Bethnal Green.

REALITY or fiction? The Jaguar CX-16 … the word on the street

is this latest conceptual Jaguar design is going to have its “C” removed and become a real-ity for 2013. It’s not official as yet but all the experts agree that of all the many concept cars introduced at the major Auto shows, by nearly all of the manufacturers, this latest sports rendition from Jaguar is odds-on favorite to take the final step from a design experiment to a brand new Jaguar luxury sports car.

The sports models have always been billed as the flagship of the Jaguar marque but with the case of this CX-16, I’m not so sure, as it may fit just below the bigger XK sports car, which may be retained a while longer. It’s a smaller car (14” shorter) than the current XK, in fact it will be the smallest Jaguar sports car produced since the XK120 back in 1954. It will be billed as a “One plus One” whatever that means, referring to the seating I suppose, or perhaps it’s the power train. Either way, it is a two-seater, none of that Two-plus, almost non-existent, two-seating arrangement that Jaguar and many other luxury sports car makers have burdened us with over the last 40 years or so. Someone once told me the reason for the tiny useless rear seats on these cars were to put these cars in the four seater class to keep the cost of insurance premiums down, whether it did or not I don’t know. Anyhow, I’ve always hated them, why put four seats in a car that can only fit two people?

The last new Jag I bought was a XJS Cabriolet back in 1987, this XJS model had been out for a number of years prior to 1987, and it was in fact the successor to the E-Type. For me, at least, there was something that

wasn’t quite right in the styling of the XJS, it was the sloping rear fins which made the car look like a fast back from the side but not from the back. But, to follow, the Cabriolet was a transformation. Gone were those rear fins, and it made the car look so much better. Apart from this improved styling the useless rear seats were gone, no room for them in the Cabriolet. Replacing the seats was a neat little parcel shelf with chrome rails wrapped around to stop stuff sliding off, and two locking com-partments neatly finished the whole area off. It was really unique and together, improving overall appearance of the car. This helped me make up my mind in buying one. So for me at least the two seat (or one-plus-one if you like) new CX-16 could be right up my alley.

This new Jag is a hybrid of course, it needs to be in this modern day and age, and the specifications should please just about everyone. Power is by way of a 3.0-liter 375bhp supercharged V6 which is teamed with another 96hp kick of hybrid electric drive which activates at the touch of a button located on the steering wheel – push to pass they call it, whereas implementing it will give you the needed boost to overtake the slouch in front. The electrical energy for these hybrid operations comes from a 1.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack residing behind the seats (with hopefully enough room for a parcel shelf atop). The battery pack receives most of its juice from a rear-axle electro-hydraulic

brake regeneration system with a Hybrid Vehicle Supervisory Controller overseeing the interactions.

This hybrid drive in no way compromises performance; indeed, that steering-wheel-button-actuated boost actually outdoes a For-mula one car’s seven seconds of KERS kick. Zero to 60mph using this boost is touted in about four seconds and overtaking boost from 50mph to 75mph takes only two seconds. In pure electric mode this car can cruise up to 50mph but what we don’t know yet is how far the car can travel running solely on electric power. It seems to me that 30 to 40 miles would be a decent number which would get me, and many, to work and back comfortably without using much gas. Power is brought to the wheels via an eight-speed gearbox which integrates an Intelligent Start/Stop system akin to the one recently launched on Jaguar’s XF sedan. IS/S can shut the internal combustion engine down within 0.3 seconds after the car comes to rest. A twin solenoid starter spins the engine back into operation in the time it

takes the driver’s foot to travel from brake to accelerator.

Style wise it looks well, very well in fact, for a smaller-than-your-average Jag. I’m not an automobile stylist, but I believe myself a connoisseur of style. It seems to me that the bigger the car the more flexibility the designer has in its final appearance. In the case of this smaller car, not too small but just right in my opinion, Ian Callum and his design team at Jaguar have got the proportions spot on. It looks aggressive and sensuous at the same time. To quote Callum on the description of the bodywork “it’s defined by three heart-lines, its front fender creases, sweeping roofline and rear haunches that wrap into the tail”. It is those rear haunches that give the car its ag-gressive look, like a cat ready to pounce – very fitting for this feline Jaguar.

Can the CX-16 compete with the exhilarat-ing beauty of the E-Type? Probably not, there has been a line drawn there which is almost impossible to go beyond, but it’s close, I’ll say that for it. Performance-wise in this modern day she’s got the better of her predecessor, top speed on this cat will be around 186 mph, and silky smooth getting there I imagine. Compared to the current eight cylinder Jaguar XK the top speed is about the same, acceleration though is better, and the average fuel economy on the CX-16 knocks the socks off the XK, 34mpg US verses 15mpg US on the current XK. Price wise, well it’s not set yet but rumours have it at around $80,000 here in the States. Not bad really, one thing that can always be said of a Jaguar throughout the years, one gets a lot of car for the money.

For me? Chuck in a parcel shelf behind the seats and I’m sold, if it comes out.

Happy Motoring

The Jaguar CX-16

Politician Norman St John-Stevas NORMAN ST JOHN-STEVAS, 82, a politician noted for his wit, his extrava-gance, and for falling foul of Prime Min-ister Margaret Thatcher died last month, after a short illness.

Beyond the affectations, which included writing in purple ink and lapsing into Latin, he was a lawyer, an expert on Britain’s un-written constitution, a former Cabinet min-ister, former chairman of the Royal Fine Art Commission, master of a Cambridge college, and advocate of the canonization of Princess Grace of Monaco.

He was elevated to the House of Lords in 1987, taking the title Lord St John of Fawsley.

“Because I am burdened with a capacity for wit, people have sometimes had the impression that I am not serious in my approach,” he once lamented. “Nothing

could be farther from the truth.”St John-Stevas first served as a Cabinet

minister in the waning months of Prime Minister Edward Heath’s administration, and returned following the Conserva-tive victory in 1979 in Thatcher’s first Cabinet.

He didn’t last long, ejected in 1981 along with other moderate “wets” deemed insufficiently devoted to her policies.

He reportedly referred to Thatcher as “the Leaderene,” “the Blessed Margaret” and “Tina,” the last being an acronym for her slogan: “there is no alternative.”

During his time in the Cabinet, however, he made a lasting contribution to British governance by reorganizing the select committees in Parliament to review the government’s performance. Those com-mittees are still growing in influence.

TITANIC TRIVIAIt is said, the last tune the band was playing before the Titanic sank was believed to be * Autumn by Louis Von Esch c1810 a popular waltz of the time, and not Nearer My God to Thee, as commonly believed. No members of the band survived but the Black Talent Agency who hired the musicans, sent the violinist’s family a bill for $3.50 for the cost of the unpaid and unreturned uniform! The search for survivors and bodies lasted nine days.* The total number of people aboard the Titanic was 2340.* The total number of lifeboats and rafts on the ship were 20; four of which were wrecked in * launching.Capacity of each lifeboat was a total of 50 * passengers and eight crew.Total capacity of lifeboats and rafts was * approximately 1,000 people. The total number of people actually taken * in lifeboats was 711. The number of people who died in lifeboats * was six.The total number of people saved was * 705.The total number of Titanic’s passengers * lost was 1635.Total number of Titanic crew who perished was 685 from a crew of 899.* Some of lifeboats had no plugs in the bottom so the passengers used their hands to stop the * water coming in.When the Titanic struck the iceberg it was rumoured John Jacob Astor quipped, “I asked for * ice, but this is ridiculous.” There were only two bathtubs available for the 700 or so third class passengers.* There were nine dogs on board, three of which survived. It is rumoured that a passenger had * freed the dogs from the kennels when all hope was gone.Ironically the RMS Carpathia was sunk six years after rescuing the Titanic survivors. She was * hit with a German torpedo and went down off the Cornish Coast.

Brief History of The TitanicEARLY IN 1908 officials of the

White Star Company announced that they would eclipse all pre-

vious records in shipbuilding with a vessel of staggering dimensions. The Titantic would be its name. Lord Pir-rie, the chairman of Harland & Wolff shipbuilders and the director of the White Star Line had concluded a plan to build three enormous ships which would become the talk of the industry and would outdo the RMS Lusitania and the RMS Mauretania, the recently-unveiled marvels of White Star’s chief competitor, Cunard Line.

The keel of the ill-fated ship was laid in the summer of 1909 at the Harland & Wolff yards, Belfast. Lord Pirrie considered one of the best authorities on shipbuilding in the world, was the designer. The leviathan was launched on May 31, 1911, and was completed in February, 1912, at a cost of $10,000,000.

The Titanic, then the largest liner in commission, was a sister ship of the Olympic. The registered tonnage of each vessel is estimated as 45,000, but officers of the White Star Line say that the Titanic was 45,280 tons. The Titanic was com-manded by Captain EJ Smith, the White Star admiral, who had previously been on the Olympic.

As history now informs us, on April 10, 1912 the Titanic sailed from Southampton, en route to New York, with 2,200 passen-gers and crew. Four days later, on April 15, the liner collided with an iceberg and sank. Over 1500 people died and 700 survived. This website attempts to tell their story and that of the great ship with which their fate would be inextricably linked.

An international team led by oceanogra-pher Robert Ballard located the wreckage in 1985, about 400 miles off Newfound-land, Canada.

The Titanic in all her glory.

My Love Affair With Titanic By Randolph Christopher James Sandler

2012 COMMEMORATES the centennial of the maiden voyage and the demise of the grand-est ship ever built, the ship we all call Titanic. My love affair with the mighty Titanic began at the early age of four years old, when my Grandfather told me the story of the doomed ocean liner. Ever since then, I have heard, seen, read and held all that is Titanic. I have turned my love for all things Titanic into the company On Board, Inc, www.onboardgifts.com, which is the world’s largest supplier of all things Titanic.

The Titanic’s hull lies resting on the bed of the sea floor. In a generation, possibly two, corrosion and bacteria activity shall take their toll. The wreck will no longer exist and myth and legend could replace fact and reality. But, because of the dream and perseverance of those in our own time, we shall now and always have before preserved for future genera-tions the history, beauty and integrity of the RMS Titanic.

On Board, Inc has sought, and intends to continue to seek, preserve and promote the Titanic with dignity, respect and with due regard to the Titanic historical and maritime significance. My company and myself intend to keep the dream alive for future generations to come. Let us all commemorate the passengers, crew and the grandest ship ever to sail the ocean blue, the ship we all call, Titanic.

EDITOR – The author visited the actual site of the Titanic disaster aboard a ship that sailed with the salvage vessel during the raising of the ‘big piece’. Mr Sandler was also one of the historians consulted on the movie Titanic.

National Geographic Museum Opens Titanic ExhibitTO MARK the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking, the National Geographic Museum in Washington opened a new exhibit on the history and study of the famous ship.

“Titanic: 100 Year Obsession” high-lights the work of Robert Ballard, who co-led a team that discovered the ship-wreck site in 1985, and James Cameron, who made the film Titanic. Cameron has

organized 33 dives to the Titanic site. The exhibit includes a detailed scale

model of the ship, as well as a working model of the engine room and a recreated radio room.

McIlroy-Donald Switch Off As World No One Players

Rory McIIroy won the Honda Classic at the Palm Beaches Gardens, Florida, March 3, and in doing so replaced England’s Luke Donald as golf’s number one world ranking player. The Irish youngster finished with a 12 under 268, fighting off the challenge of a rampaging Tiger Woods who carded a 62 (two eagles, four birdies) on the final round. McIIroy finished two ahead of Woods and Tom Gillis, with Lee Westwood another stroke back.

Britain’s Justin Rose claimed his fourth American title at Doral, Miami, March 11, in the WGC-Cadillac Championships where his 16 under par 272, put him a stroke ahead of Bubba Watson. The Hampshire resident started the final round three behind the then leader Watson, who missed a ten foot putt on the final hole thus giving the Englishman victory. A surge by Rory McIIroy put him two adrift of Rose, while Tiger Woods withdrew with a tendon injury during the final round.

Luke Donald moved back in to his world number one ranking, after briefly losing it to Rory McIIroy. Donald won a four way play-off, at the Transitions Championships at Palm Harbor, Florida, March 18. A final round of five under 66, put him at 13 under par 271 with Jim Furyk, Robert Garrigous and Bae-Sang-Moon. A birdie on the first play-off hole gave Donald victory and put him back on top again.

BoxingWladimir Klitscho (57-3) retained his

WBA, WBO, and IBF Heavyweight crowns at Dusseldorf, March 3, when he knocked out Jean-Marc Mormeck (36-5) of France in the fourth round. Mormeck hit the deck in the second and it was all downhill after that with the Ukrainian capturing his 50th career knockout. Same weekend at Sheffield, Jamie

McDonnell (19-2) successfully held on to his European bantam-weight title with a second round stoppage of Ivan Pozo (32-8) of Spain.

Scotland’s Ricky Burns (33-2) held on to his European light-weight crown at the Braehead Arena, Glasgow, March 10, with a unanimous decision over

Paulus Moses. The hard hitting Namibian (28-2) proved why he boasts a record of 19 knockouts, and fought back hard in the closing rounds, but the Coatbridge champion withstood the onslaught.

Britain Wins A Bunch Of Medals At The World Indoors

The Americans went in to the record books with ten gold medals at the 14th World Indoor Track Championships at Istanbul, March 9-11, but Britain pulled in a record medal haul too. Yamile Aldama won the triple-jump, while there was gold too for the 4 x 400m relay squad of Shana Cox, Nicola Saunders, Christine Ohuroga and Perri Shakes-Drayton who beat the Americans by a whisper. The men’s 4 x 400m team claimed a changeover impediment by the US, and were originally given the gold medal, but the decision was overturned on review and the Britons got the silver. Jessica Ennis took silver in the Pentathlon, beaten by Nataliya Dobyrnska of the Ukraine, who broke the world record, while there was silver for Tif-fany Porter in the 60m. A bunch of bronzes added to the British total. Shana Proctor (long jump) Andrew Osagie (800m) Holly Bleasdale (pole vault) and Dwain Chambers (60m). World 5,000m champion Mo Farah, suffered a collision in the 3,000m with Edwin Sol and could manage only fourth place. Official upgraded him to bronze medal after seeing the footage, but reversed their opinion on appeal.

Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins, won the Paris to Nice road race, where victory during the final stage gave him a winning time of 28 hours, 12 minutes and 16 seconds, eight seconds better than the runner-up, the Dutchman, Lieuwe Westra. He became the first British winner of this event in 45 years.

Mixed Murray ResultsA thoroughly delighted Andy Murray

beat world number one Novak Djokovic 6-2, 7-5, in the semi-finals of the Dubai Championships, February 27-March 3; but the overjoyed Scot fell to old rival Roger Federer, 7-5, 6-4, in the final. Earlier he had dispatched, Michael Berrer (Ger), Marco Chiudinelli (Swiss) and Tomas Berdych … Murray took an early exit at the Indian Wells Masters in California, March 11. The Scot lost his first match to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-4, 6-2. It’s not a happy location for Murray, last year he went out in his first match too. British number one Elena Baltacha, beat Arantxa Rus in the first round, but tumbled out to the fourteenth seed, Julia Goerges of Germany in the second.

RacingThe National Hunt’s most prestigious

event, The Cheltenham Gold was won by Synchronised, March 16. Trained by Jonjo O’Neil, owned by John P McManus and rode by Tony McCoy, the 8-1 shot took the lead over the final fence and held on. The Giant Boister (50-1) was second, with Long Run (7-4f) last year’s winner third. 14 ran. Two time winner Kauto Star (3-1) was pulled up early during the three mile, two furlong jumping course. Big Buck (8-11f) won the World Hurdle Chase for the fourth time, and in doing so, notched up a record breaking sixteen consecutive victories.

The opening of the new Formula one year commenced in Melbourne, March 18, with Jensen Button winning the Australian Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel was second, and Brit-ish team-mate Lewis Hamilton third.

International SoccerA bunch of friendly internationals took

place the last day of February, but unfortu-nately, there were no celebratory victories for the home nations.

At Wembley, England’s game against the Netherlands saw most of the action occur in the final minutes. Arjen Robben and Klaas Jon Hunterelaar put the visitors ahead scoring quickly within a minute of each other around the 57th & 58th minute mark. Five minutes from the end, Gary Cahill got one and Ashley Young hit another in the 90th minute. While England fans lauded that England had saved the day, Arjen Robben slipped in the winner during injury time for a 3-2 win for the Dutch.

Prior to Wales’ home game against Costa Rica, FIFA published its new world rankings where Wales were rated at 42nd in the world, their highest ranking in 17 years. Scotland were ranked 48th, Northern Ireland 86th, and England at fifth. The game at Cardiff City Stadium, brought out a 23,000 plus crowd, where a Joel Campbell goal in the seventh minute by the Central Americans sealed a 1-0 win for Costa Rica. Scotland produced a 1-1 tie in Slovenia, where the hosts went

ahead in the 33rd minute, while Christophe Berra leveled it six minutes later. At Wind-sor Park, Northern Ireland appeared to be constraining Norway successfully before the visitors scored one minute before the break. The game was close until the final couple of minutes, when the Norwegians scored twice for a 3-0 winning result.

After recent victories over Venezuela (1-0) and Panama (1-0) Jurgen Klinsmann pushed his US squad to their fourth consecu-tive victory with a 1-0 win over Italy in Genoa. Clint Dempsey’s 55th minute netting gave the US, their very first ever victory over the Italians. Lionel Messi smashed a hat-trick in Berne, where Argentina beat Switzerland 3-1. Brazil beat Bosnia-Herzegovina at St Gall, 2-1,where Ranger’s striker Sasa Papac scored an own goal in the last minute that ultimately gave the Brazilians victory.

European SoccerThe four remaining British clubs in Europe,

dropped to just one with only Chelsea mak-ing it through to the quarter-finals. After a 4-0 thrashing in Italy, Arsenal were unable to overcome the deficit against AC Milan at Stamford Bridge, but they did win 3-0. The Gunners attacking first half scenario produced three goals with Laurent Koscielny (7th minute) Tomas Rosicky (26th) and Robin van Persie two minutes before the break. But it was not enough. During extra-time, a goal by Branislav Ivanovic pushed Chelsea to a 4-1 win against Napoli, after losing 3-1 in Italy. Didier Drogba commenced the goal feast in the 29th minute, John Terry got one three minutes after the break, before Inler put Napoli on the card in the 55th minute. Frank Lampard scored from the penalty spot in the 75th minute, followed by Ivanovic’s decider that gave Chelsea a 5-4 winning aggregate. Surprise of the tournament was Cyprus’ Apoel Nicosia, who have fought through the qualifying rounds starting last June, and beat Lyon of France (1-1 aggregate) on penalties, to reach the quarter-finals. Lionel Messi slammed four as Barcelona squashed Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 in Spain, for a 10-2 winning aggregate and Bayern Munich slammed Basel of Switzerland 7-1 in the second leg to progress too.

The Europa League final sixteen March 8 & 16, saw Manchester United lose 3-2 at Old Trafford to Athletico Bilbao, after an Iker Muniain netting in the final minute gave the Spaniards the victory. Wayne Rooney put the Reds ahead in the 22nd minute and would score another one in the closing seconds. Fernando Llorente scored just before the break, and Oscar de Marcos got a second. In Spain, Wayne Rooney hit a 25 yard stunner, ten minutes before time, but Bilbao’s Fernando Llorente and Oscar de Marcos had already penetrated the United goal. The Reds went down 2-1, for a losing 5-3 aggregate.

An uncompromising stance in Portugal, saw Manchester City ward off Sporting Lisbon, until Xandao broke the deadlock in the 51st minute to put the hosts in front. City sealed the area for the rest of the game, but came away a goal down. At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City won 3-2, but the away goals rule put Sporting through. The Portuguese were 2-0 ahead on half-time, before an Aguero double in the 60th and 82nd minutes, and Balotelli put a penalty away in between. The Sky Blues won 3-2 and con-tinued to press forward to the end.

FA CupThe fifth round replays saw new stand-in-

coach Roberto di Matteo, watch Chelsea win 2-0 at Birmingham City after a 1-1 disap-pointing home tie that witnessed Villa-Boaz fired. Second half goals by Juan Mata and Raul Meireles put the City out. Joel Bryom put away a fourth minute penalty at White Hart Lane, that put Stevenage in front, but Tottenham, were determined to reverse the goal-less game at the Division One club. Jermaine Defoe would get two (26th & 75th minutes) with Emmanuel Adebayor getting one in between for a 3-1 Spurs victory.

The quarter-finals, March 17-18, saw Sunderland take an early lead at Everton, before Cahill leveled the game that will go to a replay. Liverpool dispatched Stoke 2-1 at Anfield, where Suarez put them ahead, while Crouch put the Potters back in the game and Downing hit the winner in the 57th minute. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea slammed Leicester City 5-2, as they moved in to the semi-finals. Five second half goals livened the entertainment. Torres got two, Kalou, Cahill, and Meireles were the Blues scorers, while Beckford and Marshall put Leicester on the scoreboard. Tragedy at White Hart Lane, when Bolton’s 23-year-old midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a heart attack and collapsed four minutes before the break, and the game was abandoned with Spurs and Bolton with one goal apiece.

Scottish FootballKilmarnock have been losing finalists for

the last six times at the Scottish Communities League Cup at Hampden Park, but March 18, against a Celtic side seeking its 15th Scottish League Cup, they finally prevailed. Celtic pep-

pered the Kilmarnock goal in the first half, but shot after shot failed. Dieter Van Tomhout broke the deadlock six minutes before time, to give Kilmarnock a 1-0 win and their very first Scottish League Cup victory.

The off-field Rangers drama continued, with the Scottish FA charging the club with varying degrees of misconduct, while the administrator has been accepting takeover bids for the club and cutting the staff and wages. Gloom on the field however, as Hearts came away with a 2-1 victory from the Ibrox, March 3. Steven Davis put the Gers ahead on half-time, but Ian Black and Jamie Hamill netted later for victory. It was the third defeat at home for the Glasgow club this season. Dundee Utd added insult to injury, March 17, with a 2-1 home win over Rangers. Jon Daly and Keith Watson scored in the first half, while Sone Aluka got one back for the Gers in the 60th minute. Celtic are odds on for the SPL crown this year.

The sixth round of the Scottish Cup, March 10-11, saw holders Celtic easily progress to the semi-finals after a 4-0 away win at Dundee Utd. Things turned drastically in the Hoops favour when Dundee’s Robbie Nelson was sent off in the 28th minute. Marksmen Joe Ledley, Georgios Samaras, Anthony Stokes and a late Scott Brown penalty had Celtic fans roaring. Two early first half goals, one by Rory O’Donnell and a penalty by Leigh Griffiths, gave Hibernian a 2-0 win at Ayr Utd. Motherwell missed a penalty and had Keith Lasley sent off which did not bode well for their home contest with Aberdeen. Rory Fallon hit a brace in the fifth and 41st minutes, before Nick Law got one back for the home side. The Dons won 2-1. Hearts and St Mirren drew 2-2, after Hearts appear to have a 2-1 advantage with just six minutes to go. However, Marius Zaliukas put one in his own net. Graham Carey opened the scoring with a scorching twenty yarder in the 27th minute, followed by goals from Hearts by Craig Beattie (37m) and Rudi Skacel eleven minutes later.

World Cup DramaFIFA President Sepp Blatter made an

unscheduled visit to Brazil, to soothe feelings after the Brazilian FA became so incensed at FIFA representative Jerome Valcke, they refused to have anything to do with him.

Valcke had castigated the Brazilians for be-ing more interested in winning the World Cup, than getting the tournament prepared. He complained none of the stadiums had been completed, and the transportation needed

between the venues was in chaos. He urged the government to get involved, and wants the ban on beer lifted in the stadiums, as after all, Budweiser are sponsors. Valcke eventually apologized but bruised egos remain. To add further spice to the pot, Ricardo Teixeira, the head of the Brazilian Football Federation sud-denly resigned. Teixeira has led the BFF for 22 years, though his reign has often been tinged with suspected corruption. However, he has never been charged with anything.

Sporting PassingsKnown as the Dartford Destroyer, Dave

Charnley was a notable lightweight cham-pion who was unlucky that he did not win a world title. After moving up a weight to fight the forceful Emile Griffith in 1964, which unfortunately, witnessed him sadly defeated in the ninth round. It would be his last fight. Charnley’s career included British, Empire and European titles. He was unable to defeat Joe Brown for the world title, but subsequently fought the American three times and knocked out Brown during their final encounter when he was no longer champion. The man from Kent ended his career with a record of 48-12-1. Dave Charnley was 76.

Josh Gifford grew up around horses, so it was no surprise the youngster pursued a career as a jockey. As a 15-year-old, he won the November Handicap at Doncaster in 1956, but a weight problem persisted as he became older and he switched from the Flat to National Hunt racing. He won a string of quality races over the jumps, before retiring in 1970, with a record of 642 winners after fourteen years in the saddle. Continuing as a trainer, he drew accolades for bringing Aldaniti, back from a series of injuries that resulted in the horse winning the Grand Na-tional in 1981. A film Champions was made of the event starring John Hurt and Edward Woodward. He retired as trainer in 2003, after 1,586 winners, passing the stables over to his son.

Joshua Thomas Gifford was 70.Mervyn Davies was part of the great

Welsh rugby union side of the 1970s, when names like JPR Williams, Barry John, Ga-reth Edwards and Phil Bennett, put fear in to their international opponents. His trademark white bandana and bushy moustache made him easy to spot on the field. He made 46 appearances for Wales and The British Lions before an injury forced his retirement from the game at just 29-years-old. “Merv the Swerve,” as he was affectionately called; was 65.

Wales Win Third Grand Slam In Eight Years

SCOTLAND went into Six Nations 2012 with high expectations. They should have won their opener against England but a moment’s

carelessness at the opening of the second half cost them the match. Dan Park’s sloppy clearance kick was charged down by Charlie Hodgson

who simply fell over the line as much in relief as anything else. That gave England an unlikely and barely deserved victory.

The Scots desperately needed a victory in Cardiff next up and for a long time belied their underdog status with attractive flowing rugby. Yet again they gifted the game to the Welsh with a few minutes of careless rugby on the resumption of hostilities after the break when they let the ball roll into touch from the kick-off. The giant Welsh winger, Alex Cuthbert, used his power to kick-start the Welsh drive and a 27-13 win.

Losses to France and Ireland followed and they went into the closing game in Rome seeking as in 2010 and 2011 to avoid the wooden spoon. They had prevailed before, first in Dublin and then against Italy in Mur-rayfield. This year, they never looked to have a chance in Rome, losing to the only try 6-13, completing a miserable run of six defeats in the trot.

IRELAND had pulled off a decent set of results in the World Cup and went into the Six Nations confident of success. They lost narrowly in their opening home fixture with Wales thanks to a magnificent comeback by the Dragonhood. They drew a white-hot encounter in Paris and came to Twickenham for the final match of the tournament with high hopes of finishing runners-up in the Championship.

But their pack simply fell to pieces in the second half, and England shunted them hither and yon at will. They conceded a penalty try as their forwards buckled and eventually they staggered home in embarrassment, desper-ate losers 9-30 to an English side growing in confidence.

ENGLAND had much to do this season following their ignominious World Cup cam-paign. They were looking for a new coach and seeking to shore up a team riven with injuries and depleted by retirements.

Luck played its part to start. First up

By John PolleyBy John Polley

they benefited from a charge-down try in Murrayfield to set their season off with that vital victory. Good fortune gave Hodgson another match-winning charge-down try in Rome. Successive away victories suddenly transformed English hopes.

The real change came in their first home game against Wales. For long periods, they staved off defeat with magnificent defence but somehow they found the ability to attack with genuine menace. They lost honourably to a brilliant Welsh team but won their third away game in a row – the first time they have achieved this feat – with a devastating game against France, and three wonderful tries.

Their last game was far too easy as their forwards pulverised the Irish, giving them a well-merited runners-up spot in the Cham-pionship. Respectability after the dreadful World Cup.

WALES, however, were fitting champions. As I suggested (UJ January), if they could continue their World Cup form, they would be worth a small bet. They did and you could have made a packet on them!

With their imposing backs who also had skill and pace working seamlessly with mobile and enterprising forwards that never buckled under pressure, they were simply irresistible at times.

The fixture list helped them with three home games, notably with the decider against France on the last day. The French came to slow the Welsh down and aim to score pen-alty goals. They succeeded to some extent but only once or twice looked like stealing a try. Wales were constantly on the front foot and secured the game with another of their youngsters manufacturing a try from a quick turnover in midfield. The ball moved rapidly along the line where Alex Cuthbert used his power and speed to put the ball down under the posts.

It was the Grand Slam moment, the third in eight years for the lads in red. This is a young side with a seasoning of experienced players who have greatness in their sights. What they have also brought with them is the highest level of fitness that always allows them to be remorseless and brilliantly imaginative in their play.

Final Table: Wales 10 (won 5, lost, 0, drawn 0), England 8 (4, 1, 0) 8, Ireland 7 (3, 1, 1) , France 7 (2, 2, 1) Italy 2 (1, 4, 0), Scotland 0 (0, 5, 1)

Man of the Championship: Leigh Half-penny (Full back, Wales)

Arsenal – The Gunners over-powered Aston Villa to win their seventh straight league match, 3-0, with first-half strikes from Ki-

eran Gibbs and Theo Walcott and a stoppage-time free kick by Mikel Arteta; Villa didn’t manage a shot on a goal. Thomas Vermaelan headed home Robin van Persie’s corner kick in the eighth minute and that’s all the Gunners needed to win, 1-0, at Everton.

Aston Villa – Substitute Andreas Weimann scored in stoppage time to down Fulham, 1-0, and end a run of four months without a home vic-

tory. Manager Alex McLeish replaced Charles N’Zogbia with Weimann after 73 minutes, and the sub headed home from close range after a shot from another substitute, Gary Gardner, had been parried.

Blackburn – Junior Hoilett’s run into the box that was thwart-ed illegally without a penalty kick being awarded clouded Rovers’

efforts at Bolton, and after they fell behind, 2-0, they failed to add to Steven Nzonzi’s strike early in the second half. The result left Blackburn two points ahead of Bolton, just one point out of the relegation spots. Hoilett’s volley and a late header by Ayegbeni Yakubu provided Rovers with a 2-0 defeat of Sunderland, and he also scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton.

Bolton – David Wheater pro-duced the first two-goal game of his career and Wanderers won back-to-back games for the first time this season as they returned

to action following the on-field collapse of Fabrice Muamba with a 2-1 defeat of Blackburn. Darren Pratley scored in the first half and Ivan Klasnic netted a late winner to down QPR, 2-1.

Chelsea – The gap with fourth-place Tottenham remained at five points after a 0-0 draw with Spurs during which they man-

aged just two shots on goal. Peter Cech repelled a close-range shot during a furious scramble and a spectacular clearance by Gary Cahill preserved the clean sheet, but only Juan Mata’s shot off the post and few errant efforts were produced offensively. Chelsea threw away a 1-0 lead at Manchester City on a deflected shot from Gary Cahill and were beaten, 2-1. Didier Drogba scored his 100th Premier League goal in a 1-0 defeat of Stoke City.

Everton – Leighton Baines curled in a free kick and Nikica Jelavic scored his second goal in a 2-0 win at Swansea City by

which Everton became just the third opponent to win at the Liberty Stadium this season. A wrongly disallowed goal, for offside, by Royston Drenthe hampered the Toffees effort to match a goal surrendered in the eighth minute to Arsenal, and they were beaten, 1-0. Jelavic got his first goal in his full debut for the club, which he joined from Rangers, a 1-0 triumph over Tottenham.

Fulham – The Cottagers en-dured their second straight shutout loss, 1-0 at Manchester United, in which a Clint Dempsey shot forced

a great save and a Danny Murphy dribble drew a tackle that could have been ruled a penalty but wasn’t. Pavel Pogrebnyak’s hat trick and a Dempsey double added up to a 5-0 thrashing of Wolverhampton. The Russian international on loan from Stuttgart scored in his third straight appearance, netting twice

in the first half and one more in the second period. Dempsey netted Fulham’s fifth in the 83rd minute to run the Cottagers’ winning streak to three games.

Liverpool – Luis Suarez re-inforced his good and bad ele-ments six minutes apart during a 2-1 home loss to Wigan Athletic. He equalized two minutes into

the second half, then punched in a Ryan Skrtel downward header that he could have nudged over the line with any other part of his body. Liverpool then conceded the decisive goal. Sebastian Coates scored his first goal for the club on a spectacular scissor-kick and Dirk Kuyt increased the lead against QPR to 2-0 with a tap-in before the roof caved in; Rangers scored three goals in the final 13 minutes to win, 3-2.

Manchester City – Yaya Toure’s equalizer in the 76th minute earned City a 1-1 draw at Stoke earned without Sergio

Aguero, who was sidelined with a foot injury. Toure took a rip at goal from 30 yards and his shot took a nasty deflection and skimmed off the keeper’s glove on its way into the net. After serving a six-month ban imposed by the club, Carlos Tevez returned and played a role in both goals as City rallied from a 1-0 deficit to beat Chelsea, 2-1, at the Etihad Stadium. After coming on with 24 minutes to play, Tevez began the move that ended with Sergio Aguero equalizing from the penalty spot; with five minutes left his wall pass set up Samir Nasri to score the winner for City’s record 20th Premier League home win in a row.

Manchester United – United opened up a three-point lead at the top with seven matches to play by shading Fulham, 1-0,

with a Wayne Rooney goal shortly before halftime. Rooney’s 28th goal of the season and a risky Michael Carrick trip of Danny Murphy in the box that went unpunished got United home. Jonny Evans’ first United goal broke a 0-0 deadlock at Wolverhampton and after Wolves went down to 10 men, Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck scored before halftime, and Javier Hernandez’s duo in the second half completed a 5-0 rout.

Newcastle – Hatem Ben Arfa scored with a left-footed rocket and set up the other two goals for Papiss Cisse in a 3-1 Magpies’ rout of West

Bormwich Albion at The Hawthorns. All of the goals came in the first half to reverse a 3-2 home loss to WBA in the clubs’ first meeting and move the Magpies even with Chelsea in fifth place. Cisse scored his third goal in four home games as the Magpies beat Norwich, 1-0, to end a four-match winless run in league contests.

Norwich City – Grant Holt scored twice in the first half and received a second caution in the final min-utes as the Canaries downed

Wolverhampton, 2-1. He flicked a ball over the goalkeeper to head home a tying goal in the 26th minute and converted a penalty just before halftime; his dismissal came late enough that Norwich was able to ride out the victory with 10 men. Wes Hoolahan clipped in Simeon Jackson’s cross to put the Canaries in front after 10 minutes against Wigan but the Canaries conceded the equalizer midway in the second half of a 1-1 result.

Queen’s Park Rangers – Dji-bril Cisse’s second sending-off in five games left QPR down a man long enough for Sunderland

to take a 3-0 lead, and Taye Taiwo’s superb free kick in the 79th minute averted the shutout in a 3-1 defeat. Jamie Mackie’s stoppage-time goal capped a memorable comeback that downed Liverpool, 3-2. Shaun Derry gave the hosts hope with a 77th-minute header, Cisse nodded the equalizer with his third goal in four games, and Mackie’s striker triggered euphoric celebrations at Loftus Road. Clint Hill lost a perfectly good goal that had clearly crossed the goal line yet wasn’t given in a 2-1 loss at Bolton.

Stoke City – Peter Crouch, starting in midfield rather than up front, struck an elegant goal in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City. A

long goal kick by Asmir Begovic was headed on by Crouch, and when Jermaine Pennant nodded a return ball, Crouch flicked it up into the air to smash a shot into the top corner from 30 yards. From the goalkeeper’s foot the ball didn’t touch the ground until it rolled down the goal net. Cameron Jerome poked home a Jermaine Pennant free-kick that had been flicked on by Robert Huth in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham.

Sunderland – The Black Cats, leading 1-0 on a Nicholas Bendtner goal, took advantage of a Queen’s Park Rangers

red card to score twice within six minutes to win, 3-1. James Maclean pounced on a mistake to score in the 70th minute and Stephane Sessegnon added the clincher. Another Bendtner goal in a week secured a 1-0 victory over Liverpool; he banged home the rebound of a Frazier Campbell shot that had twice hit the woodwork.

Swansea City – Gylfi Sigurds-son scored twice as the Swans’ extended a winning streak to three games by thumping Fulham, 3-0,

on the road. Sigurdsson headed them into the lead before halftime and doubled that advantage midway through the second half; Joe Allen’s goal wrapped up the victory that was also a club-record 12th shutout of the season. Undeterred by Scott Sinclair’s fail-ure to convert a penalty kick in the seventh minute, the Swans knocked Manchester City off the top of the table, 1-0, by staunch defending and Luke Moore’s header with seven minutes remaining.

Tottenham Hotspur – Spurs failed to end a 22-year victory drought at Stamford Bridge but did come away with a 0-0 draw in which Rafael van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor spurned great

chances amid a 20-9 edge in shots. Four days after Bolton’s Fabrice Muamba col-lapsed at White Hart Lane during an FA Cup match, Spurs players wore “Get Well Soon Fabrice” T-shirts for warmups of a match with Stoke that ended, 1-1. Rafael van der Vaart’s glancing header from Gareth Bale’s cross in the 93rd minute earned the point.

West Bromwich Albion – Shane Long scored seven minutes into the second half for a punch-drunk side that had surrendered three first-half

goals at home to Newcastle and eventually lost, 3-1. Paul Scharner headed home Chris Brunt’s corner kick 11 minutes after the Bag-gies had fallen behind at Wigan and with that goal they held on for a 1-1 draw.

Wigan Athletic – The Lat-ics won at Anfield for the first time – ever! – when they battled back after conceding an equalizer

early in the second half. Shaun Maloney’s penalty kick provided a 1-0 lead, and follow-ing Liverpool’s reply, Cary Caldwell collected a deflected James McCarthy shot to slip past a challenge and nail the winner.

Wolverhampton – Matt Jarvis scored in the 25th minute at Norwich, but Wolves conceded a goal one minute later and sur-

rendered another before halftime to lose their fourth straight match, 2-1. The goal did end a shutout streak of three matches yet the loss left them at the bottom with only 22 points and eight matches to play. Defender Ronald Zubar was sent off in the first half of a 5-0 drubbing by Manchester United.

Transfers, Signings, RAppeals And Bans . . .ASTON VILLA says Australia midfielder Brett Holman has agreed to join the Premier League club at the end of the season when his contract with Dutch leader AZ Alkmaar expires … UNITED STATES goalkeeper Tim Howard is set to complete a decade at Everton after extending his contract at the Premier League club until 2016 last month. The 33-year-old Howard has played 256 games for Everton since joining from Manchester United in 2006 … DAVID O’LEARY is taking Dubai club Al Ahli to FIFA after claiming he is yet to receive compensation almost a year after being fired with more than two years remaining on his contract. The former Leeds and Aston Villa manager’s case is being backed by England’s League Managers Association.… FORMER English Premier League clubs Birmingham and Coventry have been banned from the transfer market for failing to submit their financial accounts on time to the Football League.

The central England clubs missed a March 1 deadline to file reports with the Football League, which oversees the second-tier League Championship in which both play.

Birmingham, which was relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, blamed last month’s decision on delayed auditing following the arrest on money laun-dering charges of owner Carson Yeung.

Coventry said it is waiting for its owner to approve its budget.

The Football League has already deducted 10 points from Portsmouth, which won the FA Cup in 2008 but was relegated two years later, after the club entered bankruptcy protection.

FA Repeats Technology RCall After QPR Ghost GoalENGLAND’S Football Association has reiter-ated its desire to see goal-line technology in-troduced “as soon as possible” after Queens Park Rangers were denied a clear goal during a Premier League match against relegation rival Bolton last month.

Video replays showed Clint Hill’s header in the 20th minute crossed the line before Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan clawed the ball back into play. The score was 0-0 at the time.

The incident came a week after the Inter-national Football Association Board, football’s rule-makers, approved two devices for a final round of testing in match scenarios before ei-

ther can be sanctioned for competitive play. The FA says it will “continue to press for its

introduction once further independent testing is complete.”

Manager Warnings, Firings RAnd HiringsMAN UNITED manager Alex Ferguson says he has been told not to discuss potential can-didates for the England coaching post if they are under contract at a Premier League side. Ferguson has described Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp as the ideal replacement for the departed Fabio Capello, who quit as coach last month.

A number of other Premier League manag-ers, including Liverpool’s Kenny Dalglish and Newcastle’s Alan Pardew, have also backed Redknapp for England.… AT LEAST three managers are on the England shortlist, but the Football Associa-tion announced last month that there would be no appointment until close to the end of the season. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is the leading contender to lead England into the European Championship in June, and the FA is now willing to allow its new coach to start after the tournament if that is a deal-breaker.… CHELSEA has become a “serious embar-rassment” to the Premier League after firing Andre Villas-Boas just eight months in his reign, the head of England’s League Man-agers’ Association chief executive Richard Bevan told the BBC last month.

Dumping the inexperienced 34-year-old Villas-Boas last month left owner Roman Abramovich searching for his eighth manager since buying Chelsea nine years ago. First-team coach Roberto Di Matteo has been put in charge until the end of the season.

Brazil’s 2014 World Cup RDelays Upset FIFAFIFA’s secretary general expressed serious concerns about Brazil’s lack of progress in World Cup preparations, criticizing the coun-try for prioritizing winning the tournament rather than making it ready for fans.

Jerome Valcke said was to visit Brazil to push the organizing committee to take im-mediate action to ensure there is not transport and accommodation chaos for supporters.

“The big issue we have in Brazil is that not a lot is moving,” Valcke said. “I don’t understand why things are not moving. The stadiums are not any more on schedule and why are a lot of things late?

Brazil greats Romario and Pele have already warned their homeland was risk-ing embarrassment. The World Cup will be played in 12 far-flung venues, including a 44,000-seat stadium being built in the Amazon jungle city of Manaus.

“(Brazil) don’t have enough hotels every-where – you have more than enough in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, but if you think about Manaus you need more,” Valcke said. “Let’s say in Salvador you have England ver-sus (Netherlands) and you have 12 percent of the stadium English fans and 12 percent Holland – that’s 24 percent of 60,000 fans.

“The city is nice, but the way to go to the stadium and all the organization of transporta-tion has to be improved.”

All 12 cities will host at least four matches, triggering concerns about travel in the mas-sive nation, whose ailing airport infrastructure needs an upgrade.

abc London Olympics 2012 News emgChina’s Swimmers Training

In Bath – The CityCHINA’S OLYMPIC swim team will prepare for the London Games with a three-week training camp at the University of Bath in southwest England.

A group of 25 swimmers will arrive July 2 and relocate to the Olympic Village later in July.

A delegation from the country’s sports and swimming federations signed a con-tract with university vice chancellor Glynis Breakwell.

The university has more than 1,000 Chinese students and has facilities includ-ing a 50-meter pool, a physiology unit, a physiotherapy unit, ice baths, saunas and video analysis technology.

UK In Final Bid To Keep Dopers Off Olympic Team

BRITAIN’S attempt to keep drug cheats off its Olympic teams reached world sport’s top court last month, less than five months before the London Games.

No other country enforces lifetime bans for dopers and, during a five-hour hearing, the British Olympic Association challenged the World Anti-Doping Agency’s assertion that its code is now violated by the 20-year sanction.

Using a lawyer who has successfully represented the Queen, the BOA argued that it should have the right to keep out dopers just like it would refuse to include convicted match-fixers or proven racists.

If the Court of Arbitration for Sport adjudicates against the BOA next month, sprinter Dwain Chambers and cyclist David Millar would become eligible to compete at home in the games, which run from July 27 to August 12.

BOA chairman Colin Moynihan believes life bans are essential in protecting the integrity of the Olympics, arguing that the games should be “a big celebration of sport and not a competition between chemists’ laboratories.”

Moynihan was to submit proposals for a reform of WADA’s doping code later.

Olympic Museum On 2012 Games Site

THE BRITISH Olympic Association will open a museum on the site of the 2012 Games to mark London becoming the first city to host the event three times.

Organizers said the venue at Olympic Park in east London will open in 2014.

International Olympic Committee Presi-dent Jacques Rogge says the museum will ensure stories of “human triumph and sacrifice will come to life and ... become part of the lasting legacy” of the games.

BOA chairman Colin Moynihan points out there is no physical legacy from the London Olympics in 1904 and 1948. He says the museum will allow for the “spirit, excitement and unforgettable memories” of the London Games to “inspire future generations.”

GB Swimming Team Names 38 Members

DOUBLE OLYMPIC champion Rebecca Adlington is among 38 swimmers who have been officially named on Britain’s team for its home games later this year.

Adlington will defend her titles in the 400- and 800-meters freestyle after win-ning both events at the national trials last month at the Aquatics Center in London’s Olympic Park.

Those swimmers who missed out will have another chance to qualify for the team at a meet in Sheffield in June.

At last month’s announcement 59 athletes had qualified for Britain’s Olympic team across four sports.

Rhythmic Gymnasts Win Olympic Appeal

BRITAIN’S rhythmic gymnastics group won its appeal last month after missing out on a place for the London Olympics.

Britain’s governing body for gymnastics said it will nominate a rhythmic group to the British Olympic Association. The BOA would then accept the automatic host na-tion place in the London Games offered by the International Gymnastics Federation.

Britain’s rhythmic group filed an ap-peal after falling .273 short of the 45.223 benchmark score set by British Gymnastics during qualifications at the Olympic test event in London in January. But the Brit-ish scored 47.20 points during the group final, and said in their appeal that they had not known their selection was to be based solely on the qualification stage.

The rhythmic competition is August 10-12 at Wembley Arena.

Military Raises Flags At Medal Ceremonies

THE 805 medal ceremonies at this year’s London Olympics will have flag bearers drawn from Britain’s Army, Navy and Air Force.

The 176 active service men and women will wear ceremonial uniforms as they raise the athletes’ national flags and also take part in 100 welcome ceremonies for teams.

London 2012 chair Sebastian Coe says flag raising is “seen as an honor but we are in fact honored to have these inspirational men and women be part of London 2012.”

UK Internet Infrastructure Will Be Strained

AS OLYMPIC sprinters race down the tracks, will London’s Internet infrastructure be able to keep up?

Those responsible for British capital’s network of fiber optic cables, phone masts and wifi hotspots say they’re bracing for a data deluge to coincide with the summer games.

James Blessing of Britain’s Internet Service Providers Association says that there is a “potential for a massive hit on the infrastructure.”

Network engineers face a one-two punch: One is the influx of smartphone-wielding spectators, many eagerly updating their Facebook status from the Olympic Stadium or keeping up with the medal tally on Twitter. The second is unprecedented flow of video being streamed live across the Internet by Britain’s national broadcaster, the BBC.

Britain’s Airlines Warn Of Airport Chaos

FOUR OF Britain’s leading airlines say the government must do more to prevent severe delays and disruptions at London airports during this summer’s Olympics.

Britain expects hundreds of thousands of visitors for the games, including more than 10,000 athletes and 20,000 media personnel.

British Airways, bmi, easyJet and Virgin Atlantic said in a letter to the government that an Olympic surge in passengers means any security alert or bad weather could cause chaos unless special arrangements are made.

The airlines say disruption can be mini-mised if air traffic controllers agree to change their usual practice and give scheduled flights priority over charters and business jets.

Olympic Handshakes OKON THE other hand ...

The government has rejected advice from the British Olympic team’s top doctor that athletes should not shake hands at the London Games to avoid germs that could make them sick.

Government health advisers seemed perplexed by the guidelines, which Olympic hopefuls derided as “rude” and “pointless.”

Sheep Shearers Looking To Make Olympic ‘Cut’

A NEW ZEALAND farm lobby group says sheep shearing has the potential to become an Olympic demonstration sport.

The “time has come to elevate shear-ing’s sporting status to the ultimate world stage,” the New Zealand Federated Farmers said in a statement last month, adding that the world’s top shearers are “athletes who take it to another level.”

While shearing is a sport, its chances of becoming an Olympic event – even a demonstration one – are slim. The Olympic sports program is decided a minimum of six years in advance of a scheduled games through a complicated process that includes strict criteria including global participation by male and female athletes. Baseball and softball were cut from the Olympic program for 2012 and 2016 because they aren’t played in enough countries.

The annual Golden Shears world cham-pionships held recently in New Zealand, aws won by Scotsman Gavin Mutch, 32, who sheared 20 sheep in 19 minutes 12 seconds.
