Grant, the actor, who suspects that his own cell phone voice mail mes- sages were intercepted by journalists, has campaigned for tighter regulation of Britain’s news industry. He met Prime Minister David Cameron at the governing Conservative Party’s annual convention last month while attending a fringe event on phone hacking. The hearings will examine media eth- ics and likely suggest a new regulatory regime to replace the Press Complaints Commission. Moody’s Downgrades A Dozen UK Banks MOODY’S Investors Service has downgraded the debt ratings of a dozen British banks because of doubts over the strength of the government’s support. Moody’s said last month that the downgrades include a two-notch down- grade for government-controlled Royal Bank of Scotland, and a one-notch cut for Lloyds TSB Bank, a unit of part- nationalized Lloyds Banking Group. Spanish bank Santander had its British business downgraded by one notch, while Nationwide Building Soci- ety suffered a two-notch reduction. Moody’s said it believes that the British government will continue to provide some support to systemically important financial institutions, but is more likely to allow smaller institu- tions to fail. Lean Times On The Thames: Big Ben Slightly Askew BIG BEN has a little bend. Experts say the neogothic clock tower – one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks – is gently leaning to one side. Documents recently published by Britain’s Parliament show that the top of its gilded spire is nearly 18 inches out of line. The 315-foot tower is leaning in the northwest direction at an angle of 0.26 degrees, according to a report from 2009 that was recently obtained by the Sunday Telegraph through a Freedom of Informa- tion request. But there’s no cause for alarm, experts said. It would take thousands of years before the London landmark’s tilt matches that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The clock tower – colloquially known as Big Ben after its massive bell – has been slightly off center since it was erected in the mid-19th century. Like many old buildings, its position has been shifting im- perceptibly for years due to environmental factors such as seasonal temperature and moisture level changes. “We’re talking about unbelievably small movements,” said John Burland, an engineering professor at Imperial College London who has been involved in the study on the tower. “At the present rate, it will be 10,000 years before we reach that,” he added, referring to comparisons with the tower in Pisa, Italy. Even so, the tilt might now be just about visible to the naked eye. “Anyone who stands there and looks may say ‘I don’t think it’s vertical,’ and they are quite right,” he said. The level of movement northward has been less than one millimeter a year since experts began measuring it in the 1970s, Burland said. In the 1990s, the construction of a London Underground line affected the clock tower’s foundations and added a small amount of movement to that natural shift, he said. But most of the tilt took place during the first years when the tower was being built, likely due to nonuniform ground conditions, Burland said. Mike McCann, who’s charged with looking after the tower’s clockwork, shrugged off the problem, saying that such imperfections were a fact of life for older buildings. “The Victorians didn’t have lasers or modern surveying equipment,” said Mc- Cann, whose official title is Keeper of the Great Clock. “It was never going to be straight to start with.” Big Ben’s tilt is not quite as visible as the Leaning Tower of Pisa yet! Halloween Now One Of Biggest Party Nights In UK MOVE OVER Bonfire Night, it’s Halow- een that now captures the imaginations of children and adults alike as the biggest celebration in the UK next to Christmas. Bonfire Night on November 5 will always be part of British history, if only to mark that fateful night in 1605 when Guy Fawkes was caught red-handed in his attempt to blow up Parliament. But don’t tell that the parents of Britain who are expected to spend over £100 on their kids. It is also estimated that 30 percent of families plan on holding a party on the ghoulish night. This all amounts to a “celebration” that can plunge over £275m into Britain’s economy. Forget the recession, high petrol prices, and falling home values, when Halloween comes around the party season kicks in big time. A survey showed that Halloween leads other big family occasions such as Bonfire Night, Easter and even the little ones’ birthday parties – but, Christmas is still the big leader for most British families. But just in case you’ve forgotten about November 5 . . . Bonfire Night Wooton Bassett Honoured With ‘Royal’ Title THE SMALL town that honoured British soldiers killed in Afghanistan as their bodies were returned home received a royal title last month for its compas- sion – the first such honour granted to a town in over 100 years. Each time a cortege passed, resi- dents shut the doors of their business- es and lined the sidewalks to salute the procession. Veterans and the families of the dead soldiers came to the town to take part in the ceremony, which began as an informal show of support for those killed and grew into a tradition broadcast around the country. EXAMPLE “I am privileged to be allowed to add my thanks to those of Her Majesty the Queen and the whole country for the example you set in respecting with dignity the losses that this country’s operational responsibilities have forced upon us,” Princess Anne said in a ceremony to mark the accolade. Wootton Bassett now joins two other royal towns in England – Leamington Spa was granted the title in 1838 by Queen Victoria and Tunbridge Wells received the title in 1909 from King Edward II. Wootton Bassett did not ask for any royal recognition – British Prime Minister David Cameron had asked the Queen to grant the honour. Winehouse Death Was An R Accident – Coroner CORONER Suzanne Greenaway gave a verdict of “death by misadventure,” say- ing the singer died of accidental alcohol poisoning. “The unintended consequence of such potentially fatal levels (of alcohol) was her sudden and unexpected death,” Greenaway said. The singer, who had fought drug and alcohol problems for years, was found dead in bed at her London home on July 23 at age 27. An initial autopsy proved inconclusive, although it found no traces of illegal drugs in her system. Pathologist Suhail Baithun told the inquest into the singer’s death that Wine- house had consumed a “very large quan- tity of alcohol” – the level in her blood put her more than five times over the legal drunk-driving limit. Moody’s Downgrades A Dozen UK Banks

MOODY’S Investors Service has downgraded the debt ratings of a dozen British banks because of doubts over the strength of the government’s support.

Cardiff Hosts Michael Jackson Memorial Concert

LOS ANGELES court system was deep in deliberation last month, determining the fate of Dr Conrad Murray, in the untimely demise of Michael Jackson. However, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, October 7, a 50,000 crowd gathered for a King of Pop Memorial Concert. Jackson brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie, plus Latoya Jackson, headlined a Mi-chael Forever concert with Paris, Prince and Blanket putting in an appearance to honour their father. Jermaine and Janet were not part of the festivities, but Christine Aguilera, Gladys Knight and Cee Lo Green and British boy band JLS echoed tributes to Jackson’s awesome songwriting capabilities on a stage shaped like a giant glove. Beyonce and Black Eyed Peas cancelled. The Jacksons urged that any criticisms of Michael’s lifestyle should be put aside, and focus put on his incredible music talents. The four-hour show featured a clutch of his chart-topping hits from Thriller and Bad that brought rousing applause from an audience who obviously enjoyed every minute.

Pub Owner Wins Football Decoder Court Case

A PUB OWNER who challenged the legality of Sky and ESPN for having a monopoly to transmit Premier League matches in Eng-land, and used a less expensive Greek de-coder was forced to pay over £8,000 in fines last month, but Karen Murphy won her case at the European Court of Justice. Murphy the landlady of the Red, White and Blue pub in Portsmouth, was paying £118 a month for her Greek decoder, compared to the £480 a month the official broadcasters charged. The ECJ ruled the banning of foreign decoder cards throughout the UK are contrary to EU freedoms to provide services and British law was wrong. The ECJ advocate-general said the ruling was in line with the aims of the EU’s single market, a border free zone for goods and services.

Wolves chief Jez Moxey admitted,” It was not a decision the Premier League or its clubs wanted.”

The case will go to the High Court, which will consider a variety of similar issues includ-ing those featuring copyright laws like video sequences, opening credits, pre-recorded highlights and other extras. Many British pubs have leased foreign encoders in an attempt to cut costs. Television income from the Premier League totals around £130m in Europe, and £1.4bn worldwide. BBC sports editor David Bond reckons it will deal a financial blow to Sky and ESPN, though both are thought to appeal the decision.

Karen Murphy is not using her Greek encoder anymore, but says as soon as the High Court (the HC rarely goes against ECJ rulings) makes its decision her customers will be watching top class soccer again.

Poaching Conviction Brings Jail Term 43 Years Later

STANLEY MURRAY was convicted of poach-ing salmon in the River Don, back in 1968, and as a consequence was permanently banned from that section of the river. The 78-year-old pensioner from Aberdeen, still likes to walk the banks of his old haunts and enjoy the breeze during his country strolls. Last month however, his jaunt in the location of his old poaching habits got

him jail-time, when he was reminded that the court interdict barring him from the area some 43 years ago was still in force. Aberdeen’s Sheriff Court sentenced him to three months in jail and he was sent to prison to serve his time.

North-East MSP Richard Baker, the local member of the Scottish Parliament, deemed the sentence highly inappropriate however, and intervened on Stanley Murray’s behalf. The ex-poacher was released from the Craiginches Prison after serving just eight days of his sentence. The prison service refused to comment on his release, while Richard Baker, inferred that the Court had over-reached and its strict ruling was not within the practicalities of the case.

Cooking Oil ‘Takes Off’ For First Time On Plane

THOMSON Airways went into aviation history after their 757 lifted off from Birmingham Airport with a 50 percent mixture of used cooking oil and regular aviation fuel. The flight to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands carried 272 passengers more intent on their forthcoming vacation, than the scientific breakthrough of flying on recycled chip oil. 6,000 litres of processed cooking oil filled the tanks at a cost of £14,000, more than four times the cost of regular aviation gasoline. Thomson’s say they’ll start using the mixture on this scheduled flight starting next year, but for the time being, large quantities of used cooking oil are unavailable. Virgin Atlantic flew an empty 747 between Amsterdam and London in 2008, in demonstration of new bio-fuels technology.

“Someone’s got to be first and when you’re the first, the experiment tends to be expensive,” remarked Paul Kehoe the CEO of Birmingham Airport, who thoroughly ap-proves of the idea.

Century-Old Controversial Tree Finally Gets The Chop

IT’S TAKEN five years, but finally a contro-versial 100-year-old Beech tree has met its end, and council contractors cut down an old piece of Yorkshire woodland at Irton, near Scarborough. Five years ago a neighbour complained that the towering tree’s roots had destroyed his drainage system and were ready to topple his boundary walls. The North Yorkshire Council did not have a problem chopping the old tree down, but country-lovers and local environmentalist did. Petitions and demonstrations, followed by litigations at court ultimately gave the tree an extra five years of life, but the delay cost the council some £225,000 in a variety of expenses. Finally, a High Court Judge ordered the removal of the tree because it posed a threat to local property. Protestors climbed in to its branches during the final days, including tree-lover Mark Snow, who spent four days amidst the foliage. Contrac-tors standing by, wasted no time in cutting down the century old Beech.

The NYCC acknowledges it was a public relations disaster and say they did understand the strong feelings of the tree lovers, but that the Judge’s ruling obligated the council to comply with the court’s decision.

Molly The Spaniel Found – 16 Months Missing

IT HAD BEEN 16 months since Andrea Richards’ Cavalier King Charles spaniel went missing, and the family from Tenby in Wales,

were sure they’d never see their darling pet Molly again. She was ten months old when she went missing at a local car park, but as she’d been fitted with a microchip the family felt sure she would be found soon. They were told some Northern tourists bundled the dog into their vehicle saying they were taking her to the vet. A £1,000 reward was offered on Facebook, but produced no results.

Last month however, a Doncaster family took their beloved King Charles spaniel to a local vet after the animal had swallowed a large conker. The vet scanned the canine and the microchip was discovered.

They were shocked to discover the beloved family pet was stolen and did not belong to them. They said they had bought the creature in good faith and the children and grandchildren who had been brought up with the dog would be heartbroken with the news. Still Molly was returned to her original owners a few days later.

“It was amazing to get her back,” said a very happy Andreas Richards. “And all because of a conker.”

Glasgow Misses Out On Michelin Star Awards Again

IT IS THE time of the year when the Michelin Guide awards its stars to Britain’s top res-taurants, but once again Glasgow, has come up empty. Derek Marshall chef and owner of Gamba in the City centre is outraged that for the eighth year in a row, Michelin have refused to honour any Glaswegian restau-rants. The disparity with Edinburgh is getting ridiculous complained the restaurateur who noticed Michelin had given a new star to the Castle Terrace in the rival city.

Scotland has 16 restaurants with Michelin stars, but none of them in Glasgow.

Gordon Ramsay’s Amaryllis that closed in 2003, was the last Glasgow gourmet eatery to earn a Michelin star. Chef Marshall says the Gamba has a reputation for the best seafood in the City and has a loyal follow-ing of diners in the 13 years he has run the place. Stravaign did get a Bib Gourmand for serving moderately priced food, and owner Colin Clydesdale said he was proud of that accolade, and the lack of a Michelin star had not affected his business. It was not all good news for Edinburgh however, where Michelin withdrew its star from the Plumed Horse and Lothian’s Champany Inn lost its star too.

Michelin spokesman, Paul Cordle, denied there was any geographical basis in the star system, and affirmed that Glasgow restau-rants however good they maybe, had not reached the required standards to get a star. If requested, Michelin does send its inspec-tors out to any recommended restaurants.

his vehicle and to safety, while Hayden Smith also 15, held up barrier for them to get under. Jay then went back and retrieved the man’s scooter. A train came by some minutes later, but incredibly the man on the scooter had driven off without a word of thanks to his rescuers.

“It was nothing big,” said Jay. “Anyone should help someone.”

The boy’s teacher at Testwood Sports College, Jason Bull, was full of praise for their actions and commented “Kids don’t have a reputation for helping other people out. I was really proud.”

It was later revealed that a CCTV camera at the crossing was monitored by Network Rail and the British Rail Police who were aware of the situation and had halted all train traffic at the crossing. Inspector Mick Morris of the Southampton Transport Police Station, acknowledged their public spirit and quick thinking with the lights flashing and barriers down and admitted they are to be congratulated.

Giant Spider Places Warehouse Workers On Alert

TALES OF large foreign spiders turning up in imported produce are part of the British news cycle, and last month, once again, reports came in from a Coventry warehouse where a six inch monster was caught traversing the walkways. Staff took extra care with this then-unknown species that was not only large and ugly, but apparently fearless too. Extra care was used to capture the arachnid when it was transported to a local reptile centre, and later to the Butterfly Farm in Stratford upon Avon.

It was only when it was identified that workers realized that the earlier caution they had used was well warranted. The Brazilian banana spider is reputedly the most venom-ous spider in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. It does not spin a web, but moves around the jungle floor aggressively seeking prey, while resting in the day time under leaves and plant debris. Most poisonous spiders leave their victims in excruciating pain and with large very tender swollen areas. The “Phonetria spp” however, causes priapism. Males who have the unfor-tunate experience to be bitten by this creature suffer painful four hour erections. Loss of muscle control and difficulty in breathing, coupled with extreme pain can sometimes bring about death. Men that recover after those long erections, often find they have become impotent. The Black Widow and the Brown Recluse gets the most publicity for venomocity, but the Banana spider because of its isolation on the jungle floor rarely comes in contact with people.

Scientists eager to find remedies for erec-tile dysfunction are looking at this species and would isolate the particular ingredient in the spider’s poison that causes such fervent arousals. Fortunately for the Coventry work-ers, their caution was well-founded.

Historic Welsh Stone Toppled By Poor-Driving Tourist

THE STANDING stone that has stood on Dinas Mountain near Newport for over 4,000 years, is a rare monument to a bronze age that is proudly part of Wales’ historic past. That was until last month however, when a tourist viewing the two tonne piece of his-tory, reversed his car into the stone causing

it to topple to the ground. The Bedd Morris Stone, is named after a legendary outlaw who roamed this area, many, many years ago. Phil Bennett, the culture and heritage manager at the Pembrokeshire Coast Na-tional Park admitted that the large stone had always been “a bit wobbly,” but it will give archeologists a chance to dig beneath the local landmark and determine exactly how old the site really is. He suspects the accident was not premeditated and the motorist just completely misjudged his reversing skills.

“We want to get it back up as soon as possible,” said the manager, who confirmed the stone was removed to a safe location because of fears it would being stolen.

‘Queen Fan’ Remains Found On St James Park Island

AN AMERICAN who became obsessed with the Queen and moved to Britain to be near her in 2007, was found dead on an island in St James Park where he had been living illegally. The man known as James Robert Moore, in his late 60s, sent a series of let-ters and offensive packages to the Queen for some 15 years. The letters were long and rambling and sometimes pornographic and one ran for 600 pages. Det Sgt Mike West of Marylebone Police Station, confirmed the man was fixated on the Queen and they were aware of him, but nothing really was known about the man’s circumstances except he had arrived in Britain following a DUI case in the US. The small island in St James Park is usually a duck habitat amidst tangled undergrowth and anyone attempting to get there must swim out to it. The Island does have a bird’s eye view of Buckingham Palace however. Gardeners from the park randomly visit the island for weeding, prun-ing and gardening clean-ups, and it was on such an occasion that skeleton remains were found, alongside an empty bottle of vodka and an old yellow cushion. An American passport in the pocket was used to identify the remains. No relatives could be found and he was not on any missing persons lists. A police pathologist’s reported no foul play, and suggested the bones had been there for around three years.

Another Wreckage Find For Florida Exploration Company

A FLORIDA based marine exploration com-pany sanctioned by the British Government has discovered the whereabouts of the SS Mantola that was torpedoed in 1917 and reputedly carrying nearly 19 tons of silver. Earlier in the year, Odyssey Marine Exploration also located the wreck of the SS Gairsoppa, just one hundred miles away with a manifest of pig iron, tea and some 219 tons of silver. Both located south-west of Galway Bay, 300 miles off the Irish coast at 16,000ft below the Atlantic. The SS Gairsoppa was traveling in a convoy from India in 1941, when it ran out of fuel , and decided to make a run for an Irish port. A U-boat sunk the lone merchantman that left just one survivor from a crew of 85. The bullion haul is reputedly worth over $230m, while the British Government’s agreed share is 20 percent. The Tampa based underwater recovery company has the most modern equipment in the world with mechanical craft that can go deep. In 2007, they discovered a Spanish treasure galleon off Spain’s coast that saw some $500m worth of gold and silver artifacts recovered.

Stars’ Popularity Brings Quick Film Sales

BRITISH stars Maggie Smith, 76, and Tom Courtenay, 74, are costarring in the film Quartet, being directed by actor Dustin Hoffman in his directorial debut. Filming began in Buckinghamshire, north London, last month.

Writer Ronald Harwood adapted his stage play for the movie about friends at a retiree home for opera singers, planning their an-nual concert.

BBC Films is among its backers, and inter-national sales have already been snapped up for distribution in the UK and other countries around the globe.

Britain’s Bloated CapitalistsBRITAIN’s public has been told by the Government to eat less. It is the only way to solve the current obesity crisis.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley urged people to “be honest” about their eating and drinking habits and cut down on calories to beat the obesity crisis.

In a candid message he said: “Reducing the number of calories which we consume is essential. We have to halt and then reverse the tide of obesity in this country.”

He added that the nation needs to slash its daily diet by five billion calories – the equivalent of 17 million cheeseburgers or 28 million latte coffees. England already has one of the highest rates of obesity in Europe and in the developed world.

More than 60 per cent of adults and a third of children aged 10 and 11 are overweight or obese.

England’s chief medical officer, Professor Sally Davies, said: “Most of us are eating or drinking more than we need to and are not active enough.

“Being overweight or obese is a direct consequence of eating more calories than we need. Increasing physical activity is a part of the equation but reducing the amount of calories we consume is the key.”

Which all adds up to doctors’ continual message: Eat less, exercise more.

Another slice of chocolate cake…..?A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

A party of American visitors will come to London this month to celebrate the 75th birth-day of the Players Theatre, which specialises in Old Time Music Hall.

The Players had to give up their theatre “underneath the arches” at Villiers Street, near Charing Cross station, where they had entertained audiences for many years, but have found another site around the corner in Craven Street, where they are hoping to have performance space.

Meanwhile, they are producing their shows at nearby Leicester Square Theatre.

The American party will make the trip for a special birthday performance on Novem-ber 20, to coincide with Thanksgiving on November 24.

Roberta van Anda, who is organising the trip, said: “I have suggested that a little pack-age be put together to include an American Thanksgiving Dinner somewhere in London. I have heard that the Mayflower pub in Rother-hithe does one each year.

“It would be a lot of fun to combine a few activities in London that week – and maybe a day trip to Plymouth to see where the pilgrims started out would be a nice touch. I do know that a lot of us ‘over here’ love music hall and would enjoy spending Thanksgiving in London.”

Anyone interested in joining the group should contact Robert H Van Anda at RFHRHS Public Relations on (732) 842-4562 or at [email protected].

ARISE, SIR BRUCEEntertainer Bruce Forsyth was knighted by

the Queen last month for an entertainment career which spanned 70 years.

The 83-year-old’s honour followed years of campaigning by his fans. Sir Bruce said later that he couldn’t wait to begin calling his wife, former Miss World Wilnella, “mi’lady”.

WHO’LL BUY THE RITZ?Bids are “pouring in” for the purchase of

London’s £625m Ritz Hotel in Piccadilly. The Barclay brothers, who also own The

Daily Telegraph as well as the hotel, said in their annual report and accounts that they have had record sales and an expensive facelift for the building; but agents said that it was unlikely that the brothers would want to sell it so soon after paying £700m last month for Claridges, the Connaught and the Berkeley.

One suggestion was that they may be seeking to advertise for offers to refinance the business, which the accounts state has an outstanding bank loan of £149.6m.

Turnover at the Ritz in the last calendar year rose from £28.4m to £31.3m, giving rise to a bumper profit of £6.7m before tax against £5.4m the previous year.

London hotels have proved remarkably resilient to the economic crisis affecting other capital cities, and the Ritz has probably been more successful due to its glittering fame around the world.RECORD NUMBERS AT THE PALACE

The Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress has helped to break the record for the numbers of visitors to Buckingham Palace this summer.

More than 600,000 people paid up to £17.50 a ticket to view the state rooms which featured an exhibition of Kate Middleton’s wed-ding dress, flowers and wedding cake.

The Royal Collection has confirmed that visitor numbers were almost 50 percent higher than last year for the 73 days when the palace was open to the public.

Kate’s wedding dress, by Alexander Mc-Queen designer Sarah Burton, proved such a big attraction that tickets sold out several weeks before the exhibition closed last month, but the final figures will not be known until the annual audit is complete.

Early estimates suggest that the income could approach £10m. Last year 413,000 people visited the palace – approaching the previous record of 420,000 in 1994 – the year when the Queen granted public access to Buckingham Palace to help pay for the rebuild-ing of the fire-damaged Windsor Castle.

A Royal Collection spokeswoman said: “The ‘Kate effect’ and the interest in the monarchy sparked by her marriage to Prince William has been a major factor in attracting visitors, many from across the world.”

This was despite the Queen describing the way the dress was displayed as “horrid” and “very creepy” because it was placed on a headless mannequin and set in subdued light.

PAY FREEZE FOR THE QUEENThe Queen is facing a virtual pay freeze

after Parliament approved changes in the way in which the monarchy is funded.

The House of Lords has passed the Sov-ereign Grant Bill which replaces the Civil List and grants for travel, palace maintenance and communications with a 15 percent slice of the profits from the Crown Estate.

It means that the Queen, who received £31m of public funds this year – including a £1m bonus to pay for next year’s Diamond Jubilee – is projected to receive £31.5m by 2014/15, at last year’s prices.

The money is to cover the Queen’s

public duties and State events at her official residences. She funds all other “working” royals bar the Duke of Edinburgh via her private income from the Duchy of Lancaster, although Prince Charles, Camilla and his sons are funded from the proceeds of the Duchy of Cornwall.

GREAT GRANDCHILD FOR THE QUEEN

Buckingham Palace says Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, are expecting their second child, who will be the Queen’s second great-grandchild. The baby is due in March.

The palace said that the Queen, her hus-band the Duke of Edinburgh and Autumn’s family are delighted by the news.

The couple already have a daughter Sa-vannah – born in December – who is 12th in line to the throne and was the queen’s first great-grandchild.

Peter Phillips, the son of Princess Anne, is the queen’s oldest grandchild. He is 11th in line to the throne, and married Montreal-born Autumn in May 2008 at Windsor Castle.

END OF THE (Yellow) LINEHundreds of yards of double yellow lines

are being removed by a London council after residents complained that they made it almost impossible to park and shop.

Richmond has removed 50 yards of yellow lines in the popular shopping area of Crown Road, St Margarets, to create 12 new parking spaces. Now it plans to obliterate more yellow paint to create extra parking spaces in town centres including Whitton, Barnes, Tedding-ton, Twickenham, Kew and East Sheen.

Businesses and traders’ associations will be asked which yellow lines cause the most problems. The council will then consider which yellow lines can be removed without affecting road safety or traffic flow.

“We’re doing our utmost to support local shops to thrive and one of the best ways is by making it easier for their customers to get in,” said councillor Chris Harrison

“It’s a simple idea but until now no-one has taken the initiative and got on with it. By the time we’ve finished, I want to have our shopping streets looking busier and tills ringing even more frequently.”

MORE RIVER BUSES ON THE THAMES

London’s largest river bus commuter service has revealed new and expanded routes.

Thames Clippers announced a partnership with professional services giant KPMG as it prepares for the Olympics and record pas-senger numbers.

Services which already run between Mill-bank and Royal Arsenal will extend west to St George Wharf Pier at Vauxhall. A peak time nine-minute London Bridge to Canary Wharf service is being reintroduced while weekday services from Blackfriars will increase to include hourly departures

A further western extension to Putney is being considered. The new services started on October 3.

HYDE PARK CORNER CLOSUREHyde Park Corner will be closed to traffic

for at least five hours on a weekday for the Olympic men’s triathlon next year, the event’s organisers Locog have announced.

The road will be closed from 9am to 2pm on Tuesday, August 7.

Experts: Free Funerals Could Boost Organ Donation

By Maria ChengOFFERING free funerals to people who donate kidneys, livers and other organs could help boost donation rates, an influen-tial British medical ethics group says.

In a set of recommendations published last month, the Nuffield Council listed various ways to encourage people to do-nate more body parts, including organs, blood, eggs and sperm.

It suggested that Britain’s health system test the idea of paying for the funerals of people who sign up to the national organ donor register and then die after donating a body part. The free funerals would not be available to living donors, such as people who voluntarily give up a kidney, bone marrow, or liver.

“We have ruled out giving people a direct financial incentive to donate,” said Keith Rigg, a transplant surgeon at Not-tingham University Hospital and an author of the report.

Rigg told reporters that the free funeral idea would not benefit the donor, but might offer surviving relatives help at a difficult time. He said it was similar to what’s done in medical schools, which often cover the burial or cremation costs of people who donate their bodies for anatomy and other classes.

While there are 18 million people in the UK signed up to donate organs, only about 1,000 people a year actually do so, mostly

because few die in circumstances that al-low their organs to be donated. Britain has the second-lowest rate of organ donation in Europe, just above Greece.

TESTEDRigg said the funerals proposal should

be tested first to see if it would actually increase organ donation rates, and that experts hadn’t set a limit on the amount of money families would get for funeral expenses.

Other experts weren’t sure it would work.

“Associating free funerals with organ donation is an odd reward,” said Art Ca-plan, director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania. “It reminds people of how they get to be an organ do-nor and may make them nervous.”

Caplan said educating the public about the need for organ donation would be a better way to convince more people to donate.

John Harris, a bioethics professor at the University of Manchester, described the free funerals offer as “macabre” and said more people would sign up to donate if offered more direct incentives, such as cash.

“We shouldn’t be hung up on this idea that altruism and recompense are mutually exclusive,” he said. “It is not wrong to try to influence people to do good.”Online:www.nuffieldbioethics.org

Dear Editor,Columnist John Polley’s intuition regarding

the decline of public schooling in the UK is commendable, the failures of which parallel the crisis of education in the United States.

I have served as an educator for the past seven years. I have worked in a number of educational sites, from a university preschool, to comprehensive high schools in the Los Angeles area, to my current employment, an expansive urban sprawl of communities along the South Western beachfront of Los Angeles.

I agree that today’s youth enjoy far more comfort and entitlement than previous genera-tions, in part because today’s authorities have made every effort to meet every need without depriving our youth. Rather than looking to their elders for “guidance,” as you attest, they expect handouts, they expect to given what many in previous generations had to work for.

Sadly, I can also attest to the cult of self-esteem, mixed with multicultural ethno-centrism, that has so inoculated the minds of young people from receiving criticism

and taking direction. Many teachers are now called to suffer the rude pretensions of parents and the cowardice of administrators who refusing to follow through on necessary consequence. Many principals at the high school level pressure the teacher to pass the students, instead of pressuring the student to strive for excellence.

Nowadays, school districts are obsessed with their own merits, achieving high test scores to justify the outrageous subsidies from the state. These monies, unfortunately, are poured into a broadening wasteland of bureaucracy, one which compromises the necessary skillset that every student must possess up graduating.

I believe that when youth are expected not just to achieve, but to achieve meaningful goals attached to a career, they can succeed. Let us hope that future reform in education on both sides of the Atlantic will promote school choice for parents and accountability from, not just for, students.

Hugh Grant: Reform Needed RAfter Phone Hacking Saga

Riot Police Clear Illegal Traveller CampBy Matt Dunham

POLICE USED sledgehammers, crowbars and a cherry picker October 19 to clear the way for the eviction of Irish Travellers from a site where they have lived illegally for a decade.

By the afternoon police said they were in control of the site, and that bailiffs were beginning to move onto the disputed property.

Essex Police said two protesters were Tasered and 23 people arrested after police officers were attacked with rocks, other missiles and liquids including urine.

Residents and supporters, however, said police had used excessive force.

Evictions of Travellers, a traditionally nomadic group similar to, but ethnically distinct from, Gypsy or Roma people, are relatively common across Britain. But few are as large, or as high-profile, as at Dale Farm.

The police and bailiffs faced resistance from several dozen protesters who threw bricks and struggled with officers at the site, set in fields 30 miles east of London. One mobile home was set on fire as police moved in at dawn, and several protesters chained themselves to barricades with bicycle locks to slow down the evic-tions. Others scaled a 40-foot scaffolding tower.

PLATFORMPolice moved protesters away and later

used a cherry picker, or mechanized lifting platform, to reach the scaffolding platform and remove protesters who had chained themselves to the structure.

The conflict over Dale Farm has sim-mered since 2001, when Travellers bought and settled on a former scrap yard next to a legal Travellers’ site. The legal battle dragged on for years until the Travellers lost a final appeal last month.

The local authority says it’s a simple planning issue – the 86 families lack permission to pitch homes on the land. The Travellers call it ethnic cleansing – the latest chapter in a centuries-old story of mistrust between nomads and British society.

“I’ve been through a lot of evictions, but I’ve never seen anything like this ...

they have come in and started a riot that we never wanted,” said resident Kathleen Mc-Carthy, who accused police of roughing up Travellers at the site, injuring three women. “We are being dragged out of the only homes we have in this world.”

Lily Hayes, who identified herself as a hu-man rights observer, also accused the police of using unnecessary force.

The ambulance service said one woman was taken to a hospital with minor back injuries. Five other people were treated for smoke inhalation, breathing difficulties and a nosebleed.

ANARCHISTSAuthorities said the violence was com-

ing not from residents but from their sup-porters – anarchists, environmentalists and anti-capitalists who came to the site from across Europe.

“The premeditated and organized scenes of violence that we have already seen with protesters throwing rocks and bricks, threatening police with iron bars and setting fire to a caravan are shocking,” said Tony Ball, leader of Basildon Council, the local authority.

He said while “no one takes any satis-faction” in the police operation, he was confident that “after 10 years of negotia-tions to try and find a peaceful solution to this, that what we are doing is the right thing.”

His council has estimated that the total cost to taxpayers of evicting the Travel-lers from the site – including clean-up and post-eviction security – could rise to £18m.

There are an estimated 15,000 to 30,000 Irish Travellers in Britain, where they are recognized as a distinct ethnic minority.

A caravan burns at Dale Farm where supporters clashed with bailiffs and riot police.

Britain: Libya Eventually Could Cost UK £300mUK MILITARY involvement in Libya will cost about £300m, Britain’s defense minister said last month.

In a written statement to lawmakers, Liam Fox said the cost of NATO-led opera-tions for Britain – from the start of missions in March up to the middle of December – was estimated at £160m.

He said all costs will be covered by Treasury reserves and will not affect the Ministry of Defense’s core budget.

Replacing ammunition that was used will

cost the UK about £140m, Fox said.In March, Treasury chief George Osborne

said the campaign would cost “tens of mil-lions, not hundreds of millions” of pounds.

Britain’s defense ministry is facing sharp spending cuts under the country’s austerity measures.

The figure from Britain dovetails with expected spending by France, which along with Britain was the other major European military power behind the NATO-led cam-paign in Libya.

man, who was called after a security guard found Winehouse, said empty vodka bottles were scattered around her bedroom.

Winehouse’s doctor, Dr Christina Rom-ete, said the singer had resumed drinking in the days before her death after a period of abstinence.

Romete, who saw Winehouse the night before she died, said the singer was “tipsy but calm.” She said Winehouse had not spoken of suicide, and talked about her upcoming birthday.

Winehouse family spokesman Chris Goodman said it was a relief to the family “to finally find out what happened to Amy.”

Buy A House And Stay In The USAON OCTOBER 20, 2011, two US senators introduced a bipartisan immigration reform bill that aims to encourage foreign nationals to buy homes in the United States and to stimulate tourism. The Visa Improvements to Simulate International Tourism to the United States of America Act (VISIT-USA Act) was co-authored by Democratic Sena-tor Charles E. Schumer (NY) and Republican Senator Mike Lee (UT) to spur more foreign investment in the US and give a lift to the US economy.

A key provision of the VISIT-USA Act would allow foreign nationals who buy houses in the US to obtain a three year resi-dential visa. In order to qualify for the visa, foreign nationals must make a cash invest-ment of $500,000 on residential real-estate- a single-family house, condo or townhouse. At least $250,000 must be spent on a primary residence where the visa holder would live for at least 180 days out of the year while paying taxes in the US The remaining $250,000 can be invested in other residential real-estate that can be rented out.

The visa for such foreign homebuyers would allow them to reside in the US but would not allow them to work or obtain government benefits such as Medicare, Med-icaid, and Social Security. The homebuyer would also be allowed to bring their spouse and children under the age of 18. All appli-cants would be subject to standard criminal and national security background checks and the visa would not serve as a pathway to citizenship. The visa would be a three-year visa as long as the homebuyer continued to own the house(s) they purchased; once the property is sold, they could not remain in the country. In support of the bill, Senator Schumer stated that “[t]his concept has the potential to lift demand for the nation’s

excess homes. Our housing market will never begin a true recovery as long as our housing stock so greatly exceeds demand. This is not a cure-all, but it could be part of the solution to the housing crisis and won’t cost the government a nickel.”

In addition to the homebuyer provision, the VISIT-USA Act has other provisions to encourage and facilitate foreign travel to the US. One such provision targets retirees who are Canadian national tourists. Under current laws, Canadian tourists can stay in the US for no longer than 180 days. The VISIT-USA Act would allow Canadian nationals who are over the age of 50, and own a residence in the US or rent or pay for hotel accommoda-tions during their stay to remain in the US for 240 days. The visa would be renewable every three years.

Other provisions of the VISIT-USA Act include expediting priority visa applications, introduction of new technology into the US visa system, incentives to travel to the US during off-peak seasons, and expedite visas for nationals from countries aiding the US in the fight against Al Qaeda. A budget analysis for the proposal is not yet available; however, the Senators state that it is “highly likely the package would significantly reduce the deficit through increased tax collected from new visa holders living in the US.”

Self-Styled Lord, Cronies Convicted Of FraudBy Robert Barr

A HIGH-LIVING self-styled lord and five of his cronies have been convicted of defrauding victims of millions of pounds by collecting fees paid in advance for loans that never materialized, authorities said last month.

The gang was estimated to have collected more than £4m from at least 51 victims be-tween 2006 and 2009, prosecutors said.

Britain’s Serious Fraud Office released details of the case after the last two defen-dants pleaded guilty. All the defendants had been arrested in 2009.

Edward Davenport, 45, who was ranked one of Britain’s richest men, set up a com-pany that claimed to have money to lend for major commercial projects. Davenport owned a five-story, 110-room London house that was formerly the embassy of Sierra Leone, and rented it out for parties, weddings and film shoots.

BOASTSDavenport’s website boasts that he “lives

the high life in Monaco and London, rub-bing shoulders with celebrity friends such as Jean-Claude Van Damme, Pink and Fifty Cent.”

“He has a jet, beautiful homes and a collection of sports cars which would make any man jealous – including a Fer-rari 360 Spider, an Aston Martin Virage Volante, a Rolls Royce Phantom and a

Lamborghini.”Davenport did not claim to be a noble

but a “lord of the manor,” a title that can be bought and sold.

Prosecutors say the fraudsters collected various fees to process loan applications between 2006 and 2009, explaining delays with various excuses but never delivering any funding.

Prosecution lawyer Simon Mayo told jurors at Southwark Crown Court that the company, Gresham Ltd, appeared “long-established, wealthy and prestigious.

But the lawyer said this image was a lie. The company, set up by Davenport in 2005, was “essentially worthless. Its only business was fraud.”

WAITINGIn Austria, two victims had contractors

waiting to start work building a leisure resort after Gresham promised $45m. An Indian businessman paid Gresham £285,000 expecting a loan of $244m, prosecutors said.

Davenport and Martin Riley, 64, were convicted in May and sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison. Borge Andersen, 66, a Danish national, was sen-tenced to over three years in prison.

In a second trial, David McHugh, 53, Richard Stephens, 67, and David Horsfall, 56, pleaded guilty to charges. They are awaiting sentence.

IT’S BEEN a harrowing month on Coronation Street with freaky Frank Foster arrested for the rape of Carla Connor. The rape aftermath has been played out emotionally as the residents of the Street get dolled up in their best bib and tucker for Carla and Frank’s wedding that was never meant to be. The cake arrives, the pink orchids are on the tables at the Bistro and Sally’s got her fascinator on until news spreads that the wedding’s off. And it doesn’t take long for the reason why to filter up the street. Carla struggles to cope: “I feel like a victim, and I don’t do victim!” she tells Doc-tor Carter. She’s prescribed sleeping pills but overdoses on them, unable to manage with the enormity of what Frank’s done to her life. It’s Peter and Leanne who save Carla’s life as she struggles to cope and moves in with Maria and baby Liam, unable to stay in her flat all alone.

Carla’s situation does nothing for the Barlow marriage, however, as it’s clear to Leanne that Peter’s still got feelings for Carla, despite pretending he’s only helping her as a mate. Well, he was once a bigamist, married to Shelley and Lucy the florist at the same time, so having two women on the go is second nature to Peter. All the signs were there and the alarm bells were going off when they wed, so Leanne should have been warned.

Elsewhere, Anna springs a leak under the kitchen sink. Cue plumbing innuendo as Owen goes in to try to fix her stop cock and there’s passion with the plumber when Owen and Anna sleep together.

Over at the Websters, Kev’s dad Bill returns after months away, declares his love for Aunty Pam and tells everyone he’s going to wed her – then he fell down flat with a heart attack and ends up in intensive care. Bill in hospital, however, is the catalyst for getting Kevin all mushy-eyed and loved up on red wine with estranged wife Sally on the sofa. A kiss on the lips later and they’re upstairs renewing acquaintance again until the morning after when Kev’s taking it for granted that he’s back with Sally and flings his overalls at her for a hot wash. Sally is not best pleased, tells Kev to stuff it and chucks him and baby Jack out

before waltzing to the Bistro with boyfriend Jeff. Kev’s attempts to woo his wife back with a bottle of plonk and a cheap bouquet from Dev’s shop fail to have the required result.

In the Rovers Return, there’s big news for Steve McDonald that makes his right eye pop and left one go spinning. Tracy announces she’s pregnant, which is more news than Steve would have liked to hear. But there’s more to come when the ultrasound reveals two heartbeats – it’s twins! Tracy’s unsure how she’ll come with two more babies as well as little Amy but Steve tells her he’ll support her, he loves her and wants to be with her. Which is not something we Corrie fans were prepared for because Tracy Barlow is Evil indeed, it’s just that Steve can’t quite see that yet.

Tyrone’s finally nabbed himself a girlfriend, almost a year after Molly died in the tram crash. He’s all smiley and happy over new love Kirsty and even the fact that she reveals she’s a policewoman doesn’t put him off.

And finally this month, Eileen Grimshaw celebrates her 50th birthday and the girls at the factory hang a banner from the Underworld balcony announcing her big five-oh. Eileen’s mortified and climbs up to remove it, ending up getting her head stuck in the balcony railings. The fire service is called and Eileen’s head is rescued by a hunky fireman who turns up later at the hospital to see her, bearing a bouquet. It might just be love.

Even though Fatboy has become a boarder in her home, Dot is feeling like an empty nester, what with Jim in the Care Home, and the miscellaneous Brannings scattered here and there, so she decides to go look up her half-sister Rose, whom she hasn’t seen in years. She finds her, still putting on airs, pretending to own the home she’s a cleaner in. She also finds that she has a previously unknown son by Charlie Cotton!

Elsewhere… The prodigal Ben Mitchell returns from Gran’s, just as quietly psychotic as when he left and not happy that Lola has taken his spot on the Mitchell couch… Janine and Phil continue to annoy each other at RandR, as Janine keeps buying up property around the Square…Tanya gets confirmation that she has cervical cancer but is keeping it a secret from everyone… and Darren has been skimming money from the car lot to pay for Jody’s fantasy wedding…

Zainab has become hooked on the pills that Dr Evil has given her… Christian and Syed want to get married but they can’t with-out Syed getting a divorce from Amira. Zainab doesn’t want Syed to contact her because she doesn’t want them getting divorced, but she makes the mistake of saying that to Dr Evil, who promptly finds Amira’s father and goes to ask after her. He reveals to Amira’s reluctant father that he only wants Syed to get his divorce so he can destroy the Masoods.

We’ve known that Michael Moon was a psycho long before his Dad Eddie showed up (after all, he dated Kat). But what we’ve learned is that he has held tight to a raging grudge against his Dad, who he blames for his Mother’s suicide when he was seven-years-old, and now that he’s got Eddie and his two half, half-wit brothers all in one place, he is going to destroy them all. Now that Max has kicked desperate Vanessa to the curb, he hires her to steal Eddie away from Carol Jackson. And unbeknownst to his dad, he’s

got brother Tyler scheduled for a dangerous, unlicensed fight at the gym.

Across the Square… For some reason the lads are sitting around in the Vic and decide to go to a strip club. Then they change their minds and Ian goes on his own, but he doesn’t even get in before he sees a man and woman having a big argument as she’s trying to get away. He’s about to shrug and walk away but then he recognizes her, and she him, and she yells for his help. It’s Mandy Salter. Remember Mandy? The wayward daughter of Pat’s old friend (from her hooker days) who turned up in Albert Square years ago and rampaged through the Square, get-ting Rolly run over before she ruined the life of young Aiden, the promising footballer for Walford Town? Yeah, it’s that Mandy and the apple hasn’t fallen far from the pole dancer. They jump in Ian’s car and a chase ensues. She has nowhere to go Ian says she can spend the night at his place, and we know what that means: Once she’s got her feet un-der the table, he can’t get rid of her, and even though she’d got to be pushing 40 she’s just as immature and mischievious as she always was. Cheating Marathon Runner Admits Catching A Bus

ROB SLOAN enjoyed his moment in the sun last month when he finished third in the Kielder Marathon in Northumberland.

But soon the sunlight “faded” when it was reported that Sloan had been seen hopping onto a bus at the 20-mile mark of the 26-mile-plus race.

Sloan initially denied the accusations but was still disqualified. He returned his bronze medal and it was later presented to Steven Cairns of Peebles, Scotland.

Former Olympic runner Steve Cram handed the third-place medal over to Cairns, 43, during a ceremony which took place on board an open-top bus in Edin-burgh. Cram earlier pointed out that Sloan was the only runner to finish the second half of the race faster than the first half.

T-SHIRTCairns, a constable with Lothian and

Borders Police said: “I think he just wanted his T-shirt and medal but did not realise he was third and he just had to play along with it.”

Eyewitnesses told race organisers they saw Sloan, 31, flag down a bus about 20 miles into the race on October 9. He was then allegedly seen hiding behind a tree be-fore rejoining the race in the closing stages and crossing the line in third place.

In a statement, Sunderland Harriers said: “We have expelled forthwith Rob Sloan from membership of the club through his actions during the Kielder Marathon.”

The decision was made at an executive committee meeting, which Sloan failed to turn up for after stating he would attend.

Immediately following his disqualifica-tion, Sloan told the BBC: “I’m upset and angry that someone wants to cast these aspersions.” Later the embarrassed Sloan admitted he had cheated.

An Electoral Fiddle To Gain Independence?

A CONSTITUTIONAL issue and dodgy tac-tics are threatening the unity of the United Kingdom.

In Scotland, Alec Salmond leads the Scot-tish National Party (SNP) with 69 seats in the 129-member Assembly. He is promising a referendum on independence before the next Assembly election in 2016.

Prior to 1997, John Major’s Conserva-tives opposed a vote on Scottish devolution reasoning that it might well lead down a slippery slope that would eventually change the course of British history established over the past 1,000 years. He was only 700 years out, the last Scottish parliament having met

in 1707 when the Act of Union of Scotland and England signed it out of existence.

Tony Blair took the oppo-site view: Scottish devolution would fatally undermine the SNP while remedying Scot-land’s long-felt want for a measure of self-government. His political judgement here – as in a number of notable cases – could not have been more wrong.

One of the things few people could ever have fore-seen was the emergence of a majority SNP government. But in 2011 Labour (16), the Liberal Democrats (8) and the Conservatives (1) lost seats to the SNP. Scotland now is in the uneasy position where it’s governed by a British Coalition whose parties are third- and fourth-placed in the Holyrood parliament.

ANNOYANCEThe differences between the two countries

have led to feelings of annoyance south of the border because Scotland’s enhanced subsi-dies paid by Whitehall give her free personal care in old age, free university tuition and free prescriptions. In England these things cost respectively £35,000 pa, the best part of £9,000 pa and £7.40 per item.

In the last tax year, there was a gap of £14bn between what Holyrood raised in taxes and what they spent on their public services. This money was exported north by the London parliament, subsidising each Scots man and woman by almost 20 percent more than the English.

A hard core of 30 percent in Scotland supported independence in the election earlier this year with perhaps 39 percent against breaking up the union.

Now the Scottish Government has an-nounced that 16-year-olds will be allowed to vote in the independence referendum in an attempt to maximise nationalist support for the break-up of Britain.

At present the lower age limit for voting is set at 18 by Westminster. The referendum, however, will be organised by the Scottish Executive and that body can ordain the rules

for every part of it – including the age of franchise.

CONVINCEDS a l m o n d h a s

made it clear that he intends to use his SNP majority to force through a new, lower age for voting. He is utterly con-vinced that younger Scots are generally more nationalistic than their older compatriots.

This wi l l add another 125,000 voters to the register, effectively three percent of the Scottish electorate.

There have been com-plaints from Scots that the SNP government has been un-adventurous and unambitious with domestic issues but this appears to be part of a deliber-ate tactic by Salmond not to do anything divisive ahead of the independence vote. He wants to go into the referendum on a platform of sensible, uncon-troversial management of the

economy. What is more, the strategy seems to be successful if the increase in support for independence is any guide.

The latest estimate is that support has risen to between 35 and 39 percent, while support for the Union has slipped to around 38-39 percent.

From Salmond’s point of view the most startling statistic is that support for independence among 18-24 year-olds stands at 40 percent with only 32 percent favouring keeping the ties with the Union.

PLAUSIBILITYSalmond’s spokesman

explained the plausibility of the reform, “All sections of Scottish society will come together to choose Scotland’s future and

independence in the referendum and it is only right that young folk – who can legally marry and join the armed services – should have their say.”

In London an official Whitehall source reinforced the SNP’s optimism, affirming that Westminster could not stop the SNP lowering the voting age: “If (there is) legislation to hold a referendum on independence then it would be for the Scottish Government to decide on the franchise.”

The original Act of Union in 1707 came largely because of financial problems the Scots had over the failure of the Darien Ven-ture and it was the price they paid to the English. But it was a marriage of convenience that few Scots approved of. Robert Burns summed it up,

“We were bought and sold for English Gold

Sic a Parcel of Rogues in a nation.”

Daniel Defoe was recruited as a spy for the English gov-ernment and he describes violent demonstrations: “A Scots rabble is the worst of its kind. For every Scot in favour there is 99 against.”

PROOFAnd if further proof of the unpopularity

of the Union is needed it is a fact that on the day the Act was signed, the bell-ringers in St Giles, Edinburgh, rang the bells in the tune, “Why should I be so sad on my wed-ding day?”

So finally, unless there is a vigorous fight-back by Westminster it seems as though the United Kingdom is sleepwalking into oblivion. I can honestly say as a Brit from south of the border, I have never for one moment felt superior to the Scots. Indeed, in many ways, especially in the field of education, I have felt considerably inferior. Moreover, I have never heard any English people ever make slighting comments about the Scots. The odd joke about meanness maybe, but that is countered by jokes about English thick skins and stiff upper lips – all good-natured stuff.

But this is not a joke. The United Kingdom will be a vastly

poorer place if Scotland should declare independence.

[email protected]

There are a few places across the world where 16-year-olds have the vote. Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man changed their laws to allow this between 2006 and 2008. A handful of other states permit it: Austria, Brazil, Cuba, Ec-uador and Nicaragua. You have to wait till you’re 17 in Indonesia, North Korea and Sudan. But in Malaysia, Lebanon, Oman, Singapore and Saudi Arabia they have to wait until 21 before you can vote. And if you’re a woman, you can forget about it for ever!

Clare Orders Male Stripper For 100th

Alec Salmond

FAMILY members of Clare Ormiston were surprised to hear she wanted a male stripper for her 100th birthday party.

Clare Ormiston, from Birmingham, wanted more than the traditional card from the Queen to mark her milestone, reported the Daily Mirror.

Her daughter Marguerite said: “We asked mum in June what she wanted for her party. And she came up with a couple of suggestions.

“The first one was actually ‘a seat on the moon’. Seeing as that was pretty impossible I said, ‘What about something else?’ and she said ‘a stripper’.

“I couldn’t believe it. She’s got a wicked sense of humour – I nearly fell off my

chair.”Ormiston’s wish came true when a male

stripper called Scorpion paid her a visit on her 100th birthday.

She and fellow residents at Glenfield Residential Home in Wythall, Birmingham, reportedly lapped up the entertainment.

The birthday girl admitted: “I enjoyed that. It definitely put a smile on my face.”

Matron Barbara Hancock said the party was a bit different to the one she had imagined.

“I said to Clare, ‘We’ll have a nice big cake and what about a little classical music quartet?’ When she told us what she want-ed we could not believe it,” she said.

Londoners Living Longer Than GlaswegiansGOOD NEWS for Brits – life expectancy at birth has risen for both men, 78.2, and women, 82.3 years. But the Office for Na-tional Statistics also pointed out that not all areas of the UK were equal regarding the new figures: “Life expectancy was high-est in Kensington and Chelsea and lowest in Glasgow City in each period between 2004-06 and 2008-10.”

Increased longevity suggests that the health of the general population is still improving.

The trend of increasing life expectancy is nothing new and has been going on for decades.

However, the full impact, particularly on the finances of pension schemes, has only been widely appreciated in the past 10 years or so.

“The apparent advantage in the London

region is likely to be due to a combination of factors, including the relative affluence of many parts of London, the movement into London of healthy, employed individ-uals at low risk of death, and the statistical effects of migration and high population mobility,” the ONS explained.

Currently Glasgow men are now living to 71.6 years and women to 78 years, men lagged their more fortunate counterparts in Kensington and Chelsea by 13.5 years and women by 11.8 years.

The ONS pointed out that academic research published in 2007 suggested that as while this is due to measurable social, economic and health differences, compared to even other parts of Scotland, there is a specific “Glasgow effect” which leads to a higher death rate and lower life expectancy. The Darien Venture

(1696-1700) was Scot-land’s attempt to become a great trading nation by setting up a colony in Darien on the isthmus of Panama to expedite trade between the Pacific and the Atlantic. They took thousands of mirrors, wigs and combs to win over the natives – or so they believed, Disease, death and bankruptcy followed. In return for paying off the Darien debts, England got the Act of Union.

“FROM THE Tweed to the Tay, from Cape Wrath to the Forth, there’s none can compare with the Cock o’ the North!” That’s how the Chief of the Gordons has been known since the 16th Century. When we met him at the recent Seaside Scottish Festival he was in-troduced as Granville Gordon, 13th Marquis of Huntly. This gentle man with 13 titles, took his job seriously as he presided over the 9th Annual Highland Games in Ventura.

In his opening remarks he showed his true sense of humor when he said, “As much as I love the English, I have to feel very sorry for them. They aren’t having a gathering today, nor did they have one last week and … what’s more, they won’t be having one next week. Why? Because they have no culture. We have tartan, we have the kilt, we have Haggis, we have Whisky, we have the Pipes etc etc. What do the poor old English have. Nothing, apart

from the Morris Dancers, and most people would prefer to forget them altogether!” The audience loved it, Leo was rolling on the ground in laughter. “How unfair,” Leo exclaimed. Doesn’t Lord Huntly know Leo has feelings. He’s very sensitive, you know! And the festival officially opened.

Ran into longtime friends children’s enter-tainer Julia Gayle and photographer Anton Smith, out for the day from LA, at Susanne Malloy’s booth Rosie Lee Imports (805) 643-5TEA. Susanne has her shop in Ventura and is a four year veteran of the festival. Piper Cindi McIntosh was helping out at her clans booth and was the first to introduce us to Lord Huntly.

Exhausted from all the events and the sun beating down on us that we missed meeting up with the Masters of the Past when they played at The White Harte in Woodland Hills Saturday evening Check www.mastersoft-hepastmusic.com for their schedule.

Sunday we bounced right back to the festival and met Andrea of McLaren’s Shortbread, getting to sample their tasty jams and to-die-for shortbread (see their ad). McLaren’s is a small family owned gourmet shortbread and jam company based in Santa Clarita, Ca. A regular at the area highland games, their award winning shortbread jams and curds always sell out. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch survived a recall for his removal of the £33bn a year News Corps Chairman in the wake of damaging phone hacking scandal in the UK. Not really surprising since he and his family control 40 percent of the voting shares with a close ally who has a seven percent stake, Saudi Prince Al-weleed Bin Talal.

Britain’s Labour MP Tom Watson flew in from the UK for the 90 minute meeting at 20th Century Fox Studios on Pico Blvd, crossing hundreds of 99 percent protestors outside. (Murdoch also owns The Wall Street Journal). During the meeting, Watson asked Murdoch if he was aware that a person who had left prison was hired by British News Corp and hacked into the computer of a former army intelligence officer in 2005, and that London’s Metropolitan Police were investigating.

Murdoch said he wasn’t aware of the al-legations. Watson evoked private investigator Glen Mulcaire, who was jailed in 2007 for eavesdropping on phones of Royal Staff. “You haven’t told any of your investors what is about to come?” Not a good day for 80-year-old Rupert.

The following day, we had the pleasure of attending Whisky Live LA, held at The Hyatt Regency in Century City next door to 20th Century Fox lot, which sported over 160 expressions, nearly all Scotches, Bourbons and Whiskys from around the world, a fabu-lous dinner buffet, MasterClasses, cocktail demonstrations, Chocolate / Whisky pairings, Cheese / Whisky pairings, Cigars and Golfing lessons and travel destinations among other activities!

October weather in Southern California is usually quite pleasant, like 70 degrees. As temps soared to 88 where we live an hour west of LA, (it was100 in LA) we took off for Santa Barbara and hopes of finding a breeze. No such luck. But we did stop by Hampstead Village to see Angela Torin, who opened a new, very tasteful, snazzy British shop last December in a very picturesque courtyard just off State Street. Lovely, but easily missed, so she has relocated to a

Angela will be attending and introducing herself at BABCLA’s Christmas Luncheon December 14. You won’t miss her as she stands out in a crowd! We love it.… the Brits invade Santa Barbara, first with Raf and Carol at The Press Room on Ortega for the last 15 years, then with Mac and Kate at Mac’s Fish and Chips on State Street, now Hampstead Village. All we need now is a Carriage House. Santa Barbara is as nice as it looks and sounds. Well worth a visit!

Needing to get cool, we nearly drove north to The British Connection in Gig Harbor, Washington. They have a fabulous location near the harbor, real close for the boaters and locals alike. Neil and Beth are gearing up for their first Christmas season. Stop by and wish them well!!

On Wednesday, December 14, the Fair-mont Miramar in Santa Monica will be transformed by a spirited Merry Christmas Celebration in Grand British Tradition for the British American Business Council Los Ange-les’ 52nd Annual Holiday Event!

Tate’s acting credits include the multi-award wining BBC series, The Catherine Tate Show; as well as Dr Who; Gulliver’s Travels; Monte Carlo; 66; and Starter for Ten.

Mr Bean, Rowan Atkinson, spoofs Mr Bond in Johnny English Reborn. Mr Bean is basically a child trapped in a man’s body, which most comedians relate to, and makes the Bean character a natural for Atkinson whose favorite actors were Buster Keaton, Peter Sellers, and Jacques Tati. Johnny English is more like Seller’s Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies, said Atkinson.

ALWAYSFREE!

This paper reaches the British community in all parts of Florida and, of course, the US R

The opinions in this column are Patri-cia Kawaja’s and not necessarily shared by Union Jack Publishing.

n ATTENTION FLORIDA’S BRITISH-OWNED BUSINESSES, SHOPS and PUBS: If you wish to get bulk cop-ies of the Union Jack, (50 papers a month minimum), to offer your custom-ers, phone our circulation department 1-(800) 262-7305. The paper is free, but a small delivery charge applies. (Or go to: www.ujnews.com). Over 800 distributors nationwide.

LET’S WELCOME a huge, purpose-built and brand-new British-owned business to Florida: Legoland, the theme park in Winterland. Do you have any young children in your life? Legoland is built specifically for children under 12, while parents watch from the sidelines. Legoland Florida will be the fifth park, the first opened in 1968 in Denmark, home of Lego toys, followed by England, California and Germany. Merlin Entertainments, the British parent company, says it is actively looking for more sites. Legoland Florida was built on the site of the former Cypress Gardens, but essentially a new park built on an old site and 80 percent new. Models, statues and other elements are built with 50 million Lego bricks, glued with a specialty polymer to ensure they are rein-forced – just in case anyone thinks a piece of, say, Bob the Builder would make a nice souvenir. The park will have about 50 rides and attractions, with much interactive stuff for young children to do. Legoland promotes its parks as being more interactive than other theme parks. In the Imagination Zone kiddies can build a Lego car, play with a robot hero, or build something from bricks. Total info: www.legoland.com.

Better yet, the man behind this is Brilliant Brit Adrian Jones. His role for Merlin Enter-tainment is to get their new entertainment ventures around the world operational from A-Z. “This means I never stay in one place for long,” Adrian said at the launch press conference. “But that’ll change now I’ve discovered Florida and my wife loves it here. I feel more like an American these days!” Adrian got his start in theme parks flipping burgers near his small English hometown in the Potteries. But since university, he’s been the go-to guy for getting Merlin Entertain-ments projects off the ground and profitable, including Madame Tussaud’s waxworks around the world. He will oversee the most anticipated Florida attraction opening since

Universal Studios and Disney World, mark-ing this the pinnacle in this 40-year-old’s career. “I‘ve had 12 homes in 10 years, but Florida is where I want to stay. So the first thing I did is buy a house here.” Jones lives west of Orlando with his wife, who works there as a midwife. Bravo and welcome, Amazing Englishman for becoming one of Florida’s top tourist industry executives.

n On a smaller scale, across Florida

there are hundreds of expat British small business-owners, on E2 visas, trying to keep their enterprises afloat. This non-Lego building is just as vital. Fail and under current US immigration law, these contributors to the Florida economy must uproot back to the UK. Many succeed, due to their business acumen, determination, adequate funds and other reasons so stay here for years. I want to applaud the work of an enterprising British woman called Zoe Adams, who is one of the latter with one admirable distinction: She has been working tirelessly for the last five years to change the laws on the E2 visa, organising petitions to the White House, meeting with and lobbying US senators and Congressmen and holding seminars in Orlando on the subject of E2 visa holders. The gripe is that current US Immigration law does not allow them to apply for permanent residence. Many of these business owners have been here years, set down Florida roots, formed relationships and want to stay here long term. To understand their reform goals and add your voice, visit the website Zoe set up www.e2visareform.org. She says: As an expat business owner who is about to start their E2 Renewal paperwork and dreading the cost and anxiety of the whole process, that change would be so welcome. Contact Zoe Adams (863) 709-9555.

NOTE: There are also many UK-affiliated companies, with branches in Florida, employing local Americans primarily. The

number changes often, with companies closing, others setting up. The British Consulate-General in Miami maintains a database of most of them, for UK-USA trade purposes, so if that is your focus phone them on (305) 374-1522 for the list.

n LAWN BOWLING – that traditional English sport, is played all over Florida and leagues exist with expat players. Call Christine Garbett on (863) 588-1681 for a club near you.

n SUNDAY NOVEMBER 13 at 3pm. The Royal British Legion. LEST WE FORGET. All expats are urged to attend the Legion’s annual Remembrance Service for British ex-service personnel. Poppies will be avail-able at the service. At Shepherd of the Coast Church, 1901 East Commercial Blvd, Ft Lauderdale. Info: Call Neil Hennessy (954) 485-1142.

n PINT AND A PIE CORNER. Herewith one Florida British pub picked at random.

This is not a recommendation, unless I have personally checked out the pub, so you may deem it divine or dire. Pop in and see: BAYONET POINT (west Florida) Cricketer’s Pub, English owner Stephanie (727) 869-8817.

n ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH runs December 1-4, 2011 Featuring numerous galleries and exhibitors from the UK, this is Florida’s cultural event of the year. I attend every year as much to ogle handsome English dealers in pin-stripe Savile Row suits as much as their inventory. No flip-flops here. Enjoy over 800 art-related events and parties across the Miami area. Occurring annually since 2002, Art Basel Miami Beach features 250 galleries from 33 countries, especially the UK. Participants make it the most prestigious art show of the Americas, featuring established galleries and dynamic newcomers, ranging from a few hundred dollars to several million for museum-quality

masterpieces. Info: www.artbasel.comn MIAMI (briefly) Sir Richard Branson’s

latest venture in Florida was announced October 10 by the Miami Herald. Carbon War Room is a consortium of five private businesses, set up by Branson, including Barclays Bank UK, which will invest $550m in South Florida. This new enterprise aims to bring energy-efficient homes and busi-nesses first to the Miami area, to start in 2012, with expansion projected later for other parts of Florida. The company says it will cut Miami’s energy bills and produce thousands of jobs. I think Branson’s only doing this to save a few bob on his own Miami apartment electric bill, ha ha. Com-pany aims explained on their website www.carbonwarroom.

n ORLANDO the Sanford Café (407) 324-7887 is a new eatery catering to local Brits and American Anglophiles. “We serve numerous English food items including our popular fish and chips, “says English owner Samantha Walsh. So swing by with hungry mouths to support this venture.

n FLORIDA FACT 2011: Currently, 31

percent of property buyers in Florida are international. UK buyers comprise seven percent and come 5th in the foreign top ten. In South Florida, 60 percent of buyers are foreign nationals, many from Europe. (October 2011 Figures from the National Association of Realtors). Canadians came first – no surprise since they drive down to Florida en masse every winter. We Brits have to make more effort and spend more moola to fly in.

Rescuers Free Trapped Wales MinerWELSH POLICE say a miner was been rescued after getting trapped in rubble following a roof collapse.

The accident comes a month after four miners died in a nearby mine that flooded.

South Wales police said that the 48-year-old man was rescued by colleagues and the

Mines Rescue Team at the Unity Mine in Cwmgwrach, Wales.

Police say the man is in the hospital, but that his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Welsh health and safety officials say they were informed of the incident and had inspectors at the site to assist police.

Auditor: Revelations May Prompt New WSJ ProbeBRITAIN’S newspaper auditor said last month that it may move to investigate The Wall Street Journal’s European cir-culation figures after a former employee accused it of propping up its subscrip-tions by effectively paying for its own papers via third parties.

The Wall Street Journal Europe’s publisher, Andrew Langhoff, has al-ready resigned over the paper’s links to the Netherlands-based Executive Learning Partnership, a consultancy that former program manager Gert Van Mol says was receiving payments and getting press in return for buying up thousands of copies of the Journals’ papers.

“In essence you’re providing money to somebody who uses that money to buy your copies,” Van Mol told The As-sociated Press in a telephone interview. He added that the group had also been “promised articles and interviews” as part of the deal.

Journal publisher Dow Jones insisted that the payments were for legitimate services, and while it acknowledged that its complex arrangement might have ap-peared questionable, it had been vetted and approved by Britain’s Audit Bureau of Circulations, also known as ABC.

DISPOSALBut ABC suggested that it didn’t have

all the facts at its disposal when it signed off on the deal, saying that “there now appears to be additional new informa-tion which may give grounds for further investigation.”

Such an action could include revising down the Journal’s stated circulation figure of 74,800 papers per day, said Rob Lynam, the head of press for UK media agency MEC. Because the figures are a key way of gauging a newspaper’s reach, Lynam said that could lead to a

fall in ad revenue – although he noted that the bigger risk was to the respected paper’s prestige.

“It’s embarrassing more from a reputation point of view, particularly with everything that is going with News Corp at the moment,” he said.

THE FIRM – The Troubled Life of the HOUSE OF WINDSOR by Penny Junor. Published 2005 by Thomas Dunne Books – St Martin’s Press – NY

Penny Junor is a top London journalist who has covered the royal family for over 25 years. She is the author of previous biog-raphies of both the Prince and the Princess of Wales and two British prime ministers. (She is married with four children and lives in Wiltshire, England.)

T h e F i r m i s filled with 43 brief chapters over 432 pages of all things royal with capti-vating titles as Not Waving: Drowning, Master of Spin, All the King’s Horse – The Private Queen to Charity Begins at Home, Gongs and Garden Parties with

an 11 page index. A great book to keep on the kitchen table to enjoy with your morning breakfast and return later for your after din-ner cup of tea. If a reader has the immense luxury of hours of uninterrupted reading then you have quite a treat with this book with its 16 colour pages containing 40 photographs. The book jacket aptly summarizes the book, ‘The House of Windsor: Is it a hangover from the past, an expensive anachronisim, a relic of a bygone age of deference and hierarchy, or is it as important and relevant as ever?’ Penny’s book title is the name used by Prince Philip when he is referring to the royal family which is a big business of royal executives and their powerful associates who make every effort to avoid even a hint of scandal that could diminish the reputation of the family business.

UK-US TAX INFORMATIONRetaining UK Investments (Or What

You Don’t Know Can Hurt You!)UNLESS YOU come to the US at a very young age, most immigrants or long-term visitors will hold some UK investments. It may not make economic sense to sell these investments either prior to your arrival in the US or during your first few months here. This could be because of the market or because you have insufficient knowledge of US investments or advisers. Often when you first arrive, it is uncertain whether you will be staying here or for how long, which again makes it difficult to make long-term investment decisions.

Sometimes people do not let their in-vestment advisers in the UK know about their move to the US. This may not arise from any intention to be devious, but purely a question of “not getting round to it” together with uncertainty regarding their future plans.

A problem often then arises when the UK investment adviser continues to make sales based on an assumed UK residence. In particular, advisers want to be sure of using the annual capital gains tax exemp-tion, which is currently £10,100. In the UK, CGT is separate from income tax, which is why there is a specific annual exemption for capital gains.

By contrast, in the US capital gains are treated as part of total income that is subject to income tax rates. Although there are separate (lower) tax rates for capital gains, there is no exemption ap-plies to them. As a result, the gain would be tax-free in the UK, but will be taxable in the US. This is particularly annoying if the gains were engineered simply in order to use the exemption, rather than for any investment reason. The moral here would be to be sure your investment advisers know you now have US residence, so they know the exemption amount is no longer

relevant for you.A point also arises in connection with the

type of investments held in the UK. Many people hold investments in unit trusts or similar investment vehicles, known to the IRS as PFICs (Passive Foreign Investment Companies). In simple terms (but as you know by now tax never is, so this is not all-embracing), companies whose income is in the form of interest or dividends, rather than trading income, could be PFICs. The IRS is not in favour of these investments being held by US taxpayers, and there is provision for additional taxable income to arise if you hold any of them. Most UK investment advisors will include some of these companies in a portfolio, to create balance and to limit their reliance on equi-ties, so a large number of people could be affected by this provision.

The calculations for determining the additional income can be very complicated and are based on information from the company that is often not generally avail-able. Many people (and their US advisers) therefore ignore this potential income be-cause the time involved in the calculations is not cost-effective. This may change if (when?) the IRS takes a closer look into people holding these investments. And this time may come quite soon, because from next year, everyone must file a report of overseas assets with their US Return. It may be worth looking into what is involved with this issue for your own investments now rather than later!

Mary-Heather Styles works to help UK people through the complications of the provisions for foreigners when completing US Tax Returns. She offers specific advice to US taxpayers and can be contacted on (602) 055-5007 or at [email protected].

Scotland’s Edinburgh Airport Up For SaleTHE OWNER of Edinburgh airport says it is put-ting the facility up for sale to comply with an order from competition authorities.

BAA Ltd said last month that it hopes to agree with a new owner of the airport that serves the Scottish capital by the middle of next year.

BAA, owned by a consortium led by Grupo Fer-rovial of Spain, has already sold Gatwick airport

to comply with orders from the Competition Commission to reduce its holdings. The commission also has told BAA to sell Stansted airport which serves London

BAA owns Heathrow airport and will also keep Scottish airports at Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Edinburgh is Scotland’s largest airport, handling more than nine million passengers a year and 100,000 flights.

Lottery Winners Plan To Make Their Friends Millionaires

EUROMILLIONS jackpot winners last month pledged to turn their family members and friends into millionaires themselves.

Dave and Angela Dawes, from Wisbech in Cambridgeshire, were the only winners of the £101m jackpot and have now gone public about their windfall.

The draw was third time lucky for the couple who had only played EuroMillions twice before.

Dave Dawes, 47, was a shift supervisor at Premier Foods but has already officially retired. His partner, 43, is a volunteer for the British Heart Foundation.

They were watching television at home when the lottery took place, and were stunned as all their numbers came up.

Dawes said: “The EuroMillions draw show came on so we kept watching, not thinking we would win anything. We got our tickets out and watched in shock as, one by one, the numbers came up on the line I’d chosen. We couldn’t believe it. It was too late to call Camelot so I kept the ticket on me all night until the morning but we didn’t sleep a wink.”

They had picked the numbers at ran-dom and Dawes bought the ticket from

WH Smith. It is the third largest lottery win in

British history and makes them the 703rd richest people in the country.

They have already said they will give up to £20m away to friends and family and will also donate amounts to various charities.

Even if they did nothing with the money and put it in a savings account it would make them £9,000-a-day in interest.

The couple, who currently live in a one-bed flat, have been together for four years and Ms Dawes has already taken her other half’s name.

They had put off getting married due to the expense but are now planning the wedding of their dreams in Portugal next year.

The couple plan to take time out to con-sider exact plans but intend to give some of the cash to children’s charities.

Their success means they are £1m better off than David Bowie, according to The Sunday Times Rich List 2011. They are also richer than celebrity couples Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin (£48m) and Sha-ron and Ozzy Osbourne (£95m).

Court: No Compensation For Northern Rock Shares

A TRIBUNAL has ruled that shareholders in mortgage lender Northern Rock were not owed any compensation following the nationalization of the bank during the credit crisis.

Northern Rock was Britain’s first victim of the credit crisis, and the first to be rescued by taxpayers when it was nationalized in February 2008.

Shareholders had challenged an indepen-dent valuer’s decision that Northern Rock shares were worthless after the value of government aid was deducted.

The decision by the Upper Tribunal Tax and Chancery Chamber affirming the valu-er’s judgment was published last month.

Criminalizing Forced Marriages A Possibility

BRITAIN says it is considering criminal-izing the act of forcing someone into a marriage under moves to tighten immigra-tion policy.

Prime Minister David Cameron said last month that ministers would examine whether existing law could be changed.

Currently, a potential victim can apply to a civil court for a protection order – and anyone breaching that order can be jailed for two years.

Cameron said Britain should strengthen its response to the issue and draft a new criminal offense.

He also pledged to introduce stricter tests for marriage visas, aimed at weeding out immigrants who conduct sham wed-dings to win access to the UK.

Britain is seeking to cut net immigra-tion from about 196,000 to below 100,000 by 2015.

Curry Contest Too HotSOME LIKE it hot, but contestants at a curry eating contest in Scotland col-lapsed in agony after biting off more than they could chew at a self-styled “world’s hottest chili” competition.

One contestant was hospitalized twice, and others writhed in agony, panting and vomiting after sampling the “Kismot Killer” at a charity eating competition at the Kismot restaurant in Edinburgh.

Owner Abdul Ali staged the event to raise money for a children’s hospice. He has conceded he’ll have to cool things down for next year, after the first 10 contestants became ill and a second group of 10 declined to take part.

Ali said the curry had caused nose-bleeds in the past.

All participants signed a disclaimer before tucking in, and the restaurant had provided first aiders.

The Scottish Ambulance Service failed to see the funny side.

“We would urge the organizers to review the way this event is managed in future,” it said in a statement.

AND AWARD WINNING FOOD!Two locations in San Diego area

“Part of the secret of success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out outside!” – Mark Twain

I JUST enjoyed a cheddar cheese sandwich with Branstons, sort of a mini Ploughmans, luverly. Relishes are an important part of adding to food, and there are so many versions. Also referred to as chutneys, the favourite ones are Piccallili, Mango Chutney (Both of which I have featured previously), but there are many many types that are good. Recently I got the urge to do some canning / bottling / preserving. Years ago when we had our two acres in Wisconsin, we had a huge garden and my Jack planted just about everything there was and I preserved almost everything and loved it. I haven’t done as much since we moved to Florida, and when we downsized last year, I got rid of all my canning equip-ment. However this year I thought it would be nice to give home made things as gifts, and had to buy new jars etc … easy to find, as Canning is “in” nowadays.

Britain’s long association with India educated the English palate to spicier palates with exotic recipes brought back

from the Indian traders with the East India Company, in the 1800s and 1900s. The word chutney is a derivative of the Hindu word “chatni”, which was Anglicized into the word chutney, over here it is usually referred to as relish. It is important when preserving anything the produce has to be top quality, if there is any damage it can ruin the results. A chutney is ready when the vinegar has reduced, and all chutneys should be stored at least three months to mature and improve the quality. I have been reminiscing with a reader recently about making jams and chutneys years ago, and all we did was seal them with a thin layer of wax, then a paper cover and a rubber band. We remember sometimes having to scrape off any mould before eating but it never seemed to harm us … instant penicillin! However I really recommend that anything should now be canned. Please review directions on the jars etc, (or email me) but remember to be as clean as possible. If not canning then keep refrigerated in container with firm closing lid. In my collection of recipes I came across a couple that I made recently, and couldn’t decide on which was best, so am featuring my version of both, in time then for the holidays, and serving with nice cheese or cold cuts. Hope you enjoy my versions.

Former England Bowler Graham Dilley GRAHAM DILLEY, 52, a former England fast bowl-er who took 138 wickets in 41 test appearances, has died following a short illness.

Dilley was best known for his contribu-tion during a 117-run partnership with Ian Botham at Headingley in 1981, helping England to an unlikely win over Australia in the Ashes.

Dilley played county cricket for Kent and Worcestershire and went into coaching after his retirement.

English and Waled Cricket Board chief executive David Collier says “Graham made a life-long contribution to the game of cricket at all levels and we are deeply saddened by the sad news this morning.”

Harold Davison, 89 Music Impresario

Beatles Photographer Robert Whitaker Dies, 71ROBERT WHITAKER, 71, the photographer who shot some of the most famous – and infamous – images of The Beatles, has died.

Whitaker’s friend, photo archivist Dave Brolan, said he died of cancer September 20 in Sussex, southern England.

Whitaker took scores of well-known pictures of The Beatles, including the controversial “butcher” cover of the 1966

American album Yesterday and Today. The image of the Fab Four in white

coats surrounded by decapitated dolls and slabs of raw meat proved too strong for record company Capitol, which ordered the cover withdrawn soon after the album’s release.

The record was rereleased with an inoffensive picture of the band sitting on a steamer trunk. Originals are coveted by collectors and can sell for thousands of dollars.

HAROLD DAVISON, 89, the music im-presario who introduced Frank Sinatra to European audiences and helped bring British rock to America, has died. His publicist, Danielle Marie Owens, said last month that Davison died October 11 of congestive heart failure in Palm Springs, California.

The London-born Davison was a talent agent, manager, producer and ex-ecutive during a career that began at the end of World War II. He was the first to book concerts in England and continen-tal Europe by Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald,

Judy Garland and Bing Crosby. In the rock ‘n’ roll era, Davison was

a strategist for the British Invasion, launching acts such as the Rolling Stones and the Dave Clark Five on the American scene.

Owens says Davison also played a key role in the merger of EMI and Capitol Records.

Davison was married to British singer and television star Marion Ryan until her death in 1999. He is survived by three children and several grand-children.

Rare Sighting Of Penguin On

Hampshire BeachBEACHGOERS on a Hampshire beach thought they were seeing things when they spotted a penguin frolicking in the waves last month.

It’s believed it was a jackass penguin which normally makes its home in South Africa, 6,000 miles away, reported The Sun.

Visitors to Southsea beach, near Portsmouth, filmed the penguin div-ing in and out of the waves.

Joanne Gordon, 35, of Aldershot, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw it swimming around away just six foot from me.”

Earlier, the bird is said to have been seen waddling around the har-bour to the surprise of onlookers.

Tesco Says First-Half Profit Up 16 Percent

TESCO PLC, the world’s third-largest retailer, reported a 16 percent increase in net profit for the half year ending August 27 despite a drop in sales in its main Brit-ish market.

Sales excluding petrol and sales tax fell half a percent in Britain, reflecting a broad-er retrenchment in consumer spending. Tesco recently launched a “Price Drop” campaign to shore up its dominant market share in Britain of around 30 percent.

Tesco said trading profit – which excludes property-related items – in its main UK market was up 4.5 percent, while trading profit in Europe was up 12 percent and in Asia 19 percent.

The company’s Fresh & Easy venture in the United States trimmed its losses by 23 percent to £73m, and Tesco said the US stores were on track to break even by 2013.

Tesco also announced that it was slow-ing the development of Tesco Bank into a full-service offering, and confirmed that it has not completed the move of all systems to new platforms. The company said it will put off a more aggressive marketing campaign for new products including mortgages until next year.

Chef Says Puppy Meat No Worse Than Pork Chops

TV CHEF Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall was at the centre of an uproar last month after claiming that eating puppy meat is no worse than eating a pork chop.

The TV chef suggested that society had unfairly dictated which animals can be farmed and which can be kept as pets.

Fearnley-Whittingstall told the Radio Times: “In principle, but not in practice, I have no objection to a high-welfare organic puppy farm. You can’t object, unless you also object to the farming of pigs. It’s an artificial construct of our society, a cultural decision, to make pets out of dogs and meat out of pigs. Both animals could be used the other way round – although pigs probably do make better meat than dogs and dogs better pets than pigs.”

However, he did admit that he would only eat loin of labrador if he “was on the point of starvation”.

A Dogs Trust spokesman said: “We believe that the concept of breeding dogs for food in any conditions, high welfare or not, is wholly unacceptable.

“Dogs are companion animals and as man’s best friend they provide immeasur-able love, comfort and support to owners all over the world.”

Indycar Finale Claims Life Of British Driver Dan Wheldon

THE FINAL race of the 2011 IndyCar Racing League at Las Vegas, October 16, was sup-posed to decide the championship between front-runners, Dario Franchitti and Will Power, but an horrendous pile up of 15 cars on the thirteenth lap brought about the ultimate tragedy in a crash the ended Dan Wheldon’s life.

Officials called of the race, and the remain-ing drivers drove five laps of honour in front of shocked crowds. Dario Franchitti became the 2011 IndyCar champion, but the stunned Scots-man was shattered after hearing the demise of his good friend. Wheldon had started from the back of the grid, and in absolute unstoppable circumstances found himself bearing down on the melee at some 200mph that caused his vehicle to become airbourne.

Dan Wheldon was born in Olney, Bucking-hamshire, and won this year’s Indianapolis 500, becoming the first Englishman to find success in this race since Graham Hill won in 1966. He moved to the States in 1999, and was driving IndyCars a few years later. He won the IndyCar Championship in 2005. He always wanted to give Formula One a try, but was not given the opportunity.

His IndyCar career saw him win 16 times. The 33-year-old Englishman who lived in St Petersburg, Florida, leaves a wife and two chil-dren. At his funeral the IndyCar elite gathered to say farewell, while friend and fellow Brit, Dario Franchitti was one of the four pallbearers.

Jensen Button won the Japanese Grand Prix, but Sebastian Vettel’s third place finish saw him become the 2011 World Formula One champion, with an uncatchable total of driver’s points. Vettel won the Korean Grand Prix, October 16, as the Red Bull team added the construction title to their world driver’s championship.

Cricket; Cidermen’s India Challenge

England concluded their international summer season with two NatWest sponsored Twenty20 matches against the West Indies at the Kia Oval, winning one and losing the other. They won the first game by 10 wickets. West Indies 125, England 128-0 at close. The Carib-bean men won the second encounter by 25 runs. West Indies 113-5 at 20 overs. England 88 all out. England’s visit to India for a five ODI series last month, did not go well and end with India embarrassing England with a 95-run defeat and a 5-0 series whitewash.

The big international cricket tournament tak-ing place last month was the Nokia Champions League Twenty20 Cup, September 24-October 9, hosted by India. Thirteen teams from around the globe were whittled down to two groups of five, with the top two qualify for the semi-finals and final. Somerset beat the Kolkata Knight Riders and Auckland to qualify for the group games, while Leicestershire failed to qualify after losses to Trinidad & Tobago

and Ruhuna. In their first group match,

Somerset beat the Knight Riders at Hyderadad by five wickets. Knight Riders 161-3 at 20 overs. Somerset 164-5 at 19.3 overs. The second game against the South Australian Red-Backs at Bangalore, was abandoned because of rain. The Bangalore

Royal Challengers beat the Cidermen by 51 runs in the next game. BRC 206-6 at 20 overs. Somerset 156-6 at close. They won the final group game against the Warriors by 12 runs. Somerset 146-4 at 20 overs. Warriors 134-8 at close.

It was close, very close, but the Cidermen’s extra-ordinary run came to an end in the semi-finals at Chennai, where the Mumbai Indians beat them by 10 runs. MI 160-5 at 20 overs. Somerset 150-7 at 20 overs. In the final, the In-dians claimed the trophy with a 31 run victory over the Royal Challengers of Bangalore.

MI 139 all out at 20 overs. RCB 108 all out.

In-Form Murray Moves To Number Three World Ranking

Andy Murray collected his 19th career ATP title and his third victory of the year at Bang-kok, winning the Thailand Open, September 24-October 2. It was the scene of his very first ATP victory six years ago. This time he demolished Donald Young of the US in the final 6-2, 6-0, having eliminated Michael Berrer (Ger) Grigor Dimitrov (Bul) and Gilles Simon of France in the semi-finals. The Scot them moved on to the Japan Open where he reached the final October 9, to face off against old nemesis Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard had beaten the Scot the last five times, but Murray gritted his teeth to come from a set behind to win 3-6, 6-2,6-0. Earlier he dispatched Marco Baghdatis (Cyp) Alex Bogomolov (US) David Nalbandian (Arg) and David Ferrer of Spain in the semi’s.

The Scot made it three wins in three weeks after beating David Ferrer 7-5, 6-4, in the final of The Shanghai Masters, October 16, which moves his ranking to number three in the world and ahead of Roger Federer. After a first round bye, Murray tamed Stanislas Wawrinka (Swiss) Matthew Ebden (Aus) beating Kei Nishikori of Japan in the semi-finals.

Nathan Cleverly & James Degale Win

Britain’s unbeaten European Champion, Darren Barker (23-0), was in Atlantic City, October 2, looking for Sergio Martinez’s WBC world middleweight crown. The Londoner broke the Argentinian’s nose in the fourth round, but Martinez (48-2-2) would not be intimidated and two hard rights, one after the other in the eleventh round, had a stunned Barker on the canvas and out for the count. “I can’t remember the punch,” said the saddened Briton.” My legs just went.”

Unbeaten WBO light-heavyweight cham-pion Nathan Cleverly (24-0) took on unbeaten challenger and local fighter Tony Bellew (16-0) at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, October 15. The Caerphilly champion and the Scouser produced an action filled contest with Cleverly taking the decision on points. On the under-card, former Olympic gold medallist James DeGale (11-1) beat Piotr Wilczewski (29-2) with a majority decision to take the Pole’s European middleweight crown.

Britain sent a full contingent of 12 boxers to the World Amateur Boxing Championships

in Baku, Azerbajian, that concluded October 7. Three boxers, Luke Campbell (bantamweight) Andrew Selby (flyweight) and Anthony Joshua (super-heavyweight) reached the finals but had to be content with silver medals. Thomas Stalker (lightweight) took a bronze in his weight class.

The Klitschos have been fervently courting David Haye, the Bermondsey born former WBA heavyweight champion to return to the ring, but the 31-year-old officially announced his retirement last month and says he will pursue a career in acting.

Outsider Wins The ArcFrench horse racing fans were shocked

as rank outsider Danedream (20-1) not only won Europe’s richest race, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, October 2, but ran the fastest time in its history. The German horse ridden by Andrasch Starke and trained by Peter Schiergen beat Shareta (66-1) by five lengths with Ed Dunlop’s Snow Fairy (14-1) third and New Zealand horse So You Think at 9-2, was fourth. 16 ran. Shareta and Snow Fairy were the pacemakers over this one and a half mile course with Danedream getting stronger as the finishing line grew closer. Last year’s winner, Sir Michael Stoute’s Epsom Derby winner Workforce, looking for a second consecutive victory did not have a good draw and finished twelfth.

Golf: Tiger & TomTiger Woods put in an appearance at the

Frys.Com championships in San Martin, Cali-fornia, where Paul Casey challenged for three rounds but faded badly in the fourth, finishing six strokes distant of winner Bryce Molder, who beat fellow American Briny Baird, in a play-off after both ended up 17-under-par. The Tiger finished with a 10-under in 30th place, and witnessed a man who threw a hot dog at him get arrested.

Tom Lewis, was the highest scoring amateur at this year’s British Open and the performance persuaded the Englishman to turn pro in September. His decision appears to have been the right one, as in only his third pro-tournament he won the Portuguese Masters at Vilmoura, October 16, firing off a 21-under 267. A 65 on the last round made the difference, and the 20-year-old finished two clear of the field.

Hawaii Glory For Chrissie Wellington

Chrissie Wellington claimed her fourth World Ironman Championships at Hawaii, October 8, beating Miranda Carfrae of Aus-tralia. Brits, Leanda Cave and Rachel Joyce were third and fourth. The course features a 2.4 mile swim a 112 mile cycling course and a full marathon. Wellington from Feltwell, Norfolk, is a Colorado resident. … Louis Smith took a bronze in the Pommel Horse at the World Gymnastic Championship at Tokyo, October 7-16. Dan Davis just missed a medal with a fourth place finish in the individual all round event.

European ChampionshipsThe final games in the qualifying groups

of the European Championship took place in October, but only England of the home nations would get through to the last sixteen. They got the point they needed with a 2-2 result at Podgorica against Montenegro. Ashley Young and Darren Brent put Fabio Capello’s men ahead, but a Zventic goal on half time brought the contest a lot closer. The sending off of Wayne Rooney (his demeanor may have been affected by his father’s arrest on betting irregularities charges a few days earlier) in the 74th minute was not in England’s plans, and Rooney will miss the first three group games next year. Substitute Delibasic, hit the equal-izer during the first minute of injury time.

Northern Ireland got off on the right foot at Windsor Park where Steven Davis netted in the 21st minute against Estonia. But a penalty by Vassiljev, who scored a second later in the game, had fans roaring for Nigel Worthington sacking, as the Ulstermen went down 1-2. A

Gareth McAuley own goal in Italy did not help the Ulster men and the hosts conquered 3-1. Nigel Worthington announced he would end his tenure as coach, thoroughly disgusted that several players had made themselves unavailable for international duty.

Wales pulled themselves off the bottom of their group with a 2-0 win in Cardiff, against Switzerland. The game opened up for the Welsh when Ziegler, got his marching orders in the 55th minute. Skipper Aaron Ramsey, put a penalty away in the 60th minute and ten minutes later Gareth Bale, delivered the second.

Wales finished on a high note with a 1-0 win at Sofia against Bulgaria, where Gareth Bale netting on half-time was a match winner.

A Craig Mackall-Smith goal in the 67th minute gave Scotland a 1-0 away victory over Liechtenstein. Scotland needed a win in Spain against the World and European Champions to qualify for the play-offs, but the Spaniards did not loosen their grip having come so far and won 3-1. Spain were 2-0 up by halftime, David Villa hit a third in the 54th minute, while David Goodwillie put a penalty away for the Scots in the 66th minute.

Twelve nations will go forward to the last sixteen and the competition proper. Poland, Ukraine, Germany, Russia, Italy, France, Netherlands, Greece, England, Denmark, Spain and Sweden. Eight nations will play-off for the remaining four places. Portugal, Croatia, Republic of Ireland, Czech Republic, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Estonia, Montenegro and Turkey.

Jurgen Klinsmann claimed his first vic-tory, after his fourth game in charge of the US squad, during a rainy evening in Miami, in front of 21,000 plus fans. A spectacular Clint Dempsey netting in the 36th minute gave the US a 1-0 win over Honduras. Ecuador spoilt that upbeat feeling a few days later however, at Harrison, NJ, where a 79th minute goal by Jaime Ayovi gave the visitors a 1-0 result. Klinsmann’s three losses in five games shows he still has a way to go. Former England and Everton goalkeeper Chris Woods, 51, has been hired as the US goalkeeping coach.

European SoccerThe third match in the qualifying group

games of the Champion League, October 18-19, saw the four British clubs notch up victories.

An injury time netting by Sergio Aguero gave Manchester City a 2-1 win over Villar-real at the Eastlands. The Spaniards had gone ahead in the fourth minute, while an own goal by Marchena two minutes before the break had the game level. Wayne Rooney scored twice from the penalty spot in Romania, where Manchester United came away 2-0 winners against SC Otelul Gatati. Both clubs ended up with ten men apiece after Nemanja Vidic was sent off in the 66th minute and two minutes before the end the hosts’ lost a player too. Chelsea put together a goal-feast at the Bridge where they took Genk of Belgium apart 5-0. Fernando Torres got a brace, followed by singles from Raul Meireles, Branislav Ivanovic and Salomon Kalou. An injury time netting by Welsh skipper Aaron Ramsey, was crucial enough to give Arsenal a 1-0 win at Marseilles.

Europa LeagueThe third group games of the Europa

League, October 20, saw five British clubs in action with only one of them coming away pointless. Stoke City beat Maccabi Tel-Aviv 3-0 at home, but both sides had a player sent off. Kenwyne Jones, Cameron Jerome and Ryan Shotton had the potters ahead and then Jerome got a red card two minutes before half-time. Ziv got sent off for the visitors in the 55th minute. A 25-yard-drive by Roman Pavlyuchenko in the 33rd minute gave Spurs a 1-0 victory at White Hart Lane against Rubin Kazan of Russia. Cha-Du-Ri’s own goal put Celtic behind at Rennes, but Joe Ledley came back with an equalizer in the 70th minute to give the Hoops a 1-1 tie. Birmingham City broke Club Brugges unbeaten European home records with a 2-1 win in Belgium. The hosts went ahead after three minutes, but David Murphy leveled in the 26th minute, while a last gasp winner by Chris Wood gave the blues the three points. Fulham had Moussa Dembele sent off in the 29th minute in Poland, where Wisla Krakow finally broke down the Cottagers defense in the 86th minute to win by the only goal of the game.

Scottish SoccerRangers’ board room situation continued to

complicate last month when Scottish television ran a documentary about Craig Whyte (who bought a 83 percent controlling interest off Sir David Murray) revealing that previous business tactics had led to him being barred from being a director of any company for seven years. The uncomplimentary report did not sooth the skeptics at the Ibrox Stadium. Whyte immediately severed the club’s ties with the BBC.

The former Rangers financial director Donald McIntyre, who recently resigned, is suing for breach of contract and the Court of Session in Edinburgh ruled that £300,000 of the clubs assets be held in escrow regarding

the case. The Court had already ruled that former CEO Martin Bain’s petition, should have £480,000 held in lieu of an unpaid loan. More complications followed with Ranger’s legendary hero John Grieg, who has spent 50 years with the club as player, coach and director resigned in tandem with former CEO John Mclland. On the field, Rangers struggled to a 1-1 tie at the Ibrox against Aberdeen, but beat Hearts at Tynecastle 2-0. Late October they led the SPL by nine points.

Celtic’s SPL championship hopes took a nasty turn at Hearts, October 2, where Kris Commons was sent off in the 64th minute. Goals by Rudi Skacel and Ryan Stevenson gave Hearts a 2-0 win. The Hoops were 3-0 down by halftime at Kilmarnock, October 15, but came back for a 3-3 tie with a brace by Anthony Stokes eased the pain. … The semi-finals of the Scottish Ramsdens Challenge Cup, October 9, saw Falkirk overwhelm third division Annan Athletic with a 3-0 victory. Mark Millar hit the spot after ten minutes, and Farid El Alagul added the other two. A Mark McLaughlin goal two minutes before the break, gave Hamilton Academicals a 1-0 win over Livingston. … The second round of the Scottish Cup, October 22, saw the non-leaguers mix it up with Division three clubs where fans were treated to few goal-feasts. Highland League side Deverondale beat third division Berwick Rangers 4-0 at home. Stranraer visited Wigtown & Bladnoch and clobbered them 9-0, while Auchinleck Talbot won 8-1 at home against Threave Rovers.

World Cup 2014The qualifying rounds continued as did

the goals. Canada were in the Caribbean and swallowed St Lucia 7-0, Haiti visited the US Virgin Islands and clobbered them 7-0 too. The US Virgin Islands have been made the group’s whipping boys, and later Antigua & Barbuda would swamp them 10-0. Panama won 5-0 at Dominica and then beat Nicaragua 5-1. Argentina got their World Cup off to a 4-1 home win over Chile. Higuain got three, with Messi on the scoreboard too. Things proved different in Venezuela however, where the Argentines have remained unbeaten in the previous 18 encounters. The hosts, who have never reached the final rounds of the World Cup, notched a 1-0 win with a netting in the 62nd minute. Big scores at Iran who beat Bahrain 6-0, Japan hammered Tajikstan 8-0, while Trinidad &Tobago beat Barbados 4-0.

Sporting PassingsGinger McCain and Red Rum is a pairing

that most sporting Britons will remember with deep affection. Donald “Ginger” McCain,” was a taxi driver and car salesman from South-port, whose interest in national hunt racing led him to train a few of his wealthy customer’s horses. Red Rum was purchased for £7,000 at the Doncaster sales and McCain had his first big prospect. McCain and Red Rum would win the Grand National three times and be runner up twice. He would also win the National for a third time with Amberleigh House in 2004. Red Rum ended his days at 30-years-old in 1995. McCain picked up the monika “Mr Aintree,” and would hand over his stables to his son Donald. Donald “Ginger” McCain was 80-years-old.

Cavendish Signs With SkyNewly crowned world road race champion

Mark Cavendish, widely regarded as the best sprinter in cycling, joined Britain’s Team Sky last month for the 2012 season. The 26-year-old Briton became one of the sport’s hot prop-erties by winning five stages at this year’s Tour de France to capture the green jersey, given to the race’s overall leading points scorer. Cav-endish followed that up by winning the world title in Copenhagen in September.

Page 15: Union Jack News – November 2011

Arsenal – Robin van Persie came off the bench in the 65th minute and needed just nine minutes to score the two goals

by which Arsenal downed Stoke City, 3-1, to win for the sixth time in their last seven games. Van Persie entered after the Gunners had dominated play but had only a goal by Gervinho and a 1-1 scoreline to show for it. His goals upped his total to a remarkable 29 in his last 34 appearances. He scored after just 29 seconds then nailed a superb winner in the 82nd minute for a 2-1 defeat of Sunderland.

Aston Villa – Darren Bent’s penalty midway through the first half gave Villa a 1-0 lead at home against West Bromwich Albion, but

after midfielder Chris Herd was red-carded in the 35th minute they conceded twice and lost, 2-1. Bent scored after he’d scooped over the bar from close range in the fifth minute. Stephen Warnock’s goal in the 65th minute did little to stem the tide in a 4-1 loss to Manchester City.

Blackburn – Mauro Formica equalized in the 28th minute yet Rovers still went down, 2-1, at home to Tottenham. Christopher

Samba’s knock-down from a Morten Gamst Pedersen free kick set up the ball for Formica, who smashed the ball home. Aiyegbeni Yakubu replaced Formica for the final 20 minutes and squandered two chances to tie up the game again. Samba’s headed goal from Jason Lowe’s corner kick secured a 1-1 draw at Queen’s Park Rangers.

Bolton – Another grim defeat, 2-0 to Sunderland at home, ran to five games Wanderers’ losing streak at the Reebok Stadium. They were better at Wigan, posting a 3-1

win despite failing to convert a penalty kick. Nigel Reo-Coker scored in the fourth minute and David Ngog restored a one-goal lead after Wigan equalized. Kevin Davies’ penalty was saved but Chris Eagles added a clincher in the final minutes.

Chelsea – Red cards to Jose Boswinga and Didier Drogba and cautions to seven other players marred a 1-0 loss at Queen’s Park

Rangers. Boswinga and Drogba were sent off eight minutes apart in the second half, follow-ing a mindless challenge by David Luiz the provided QPR with a penalty kick it converted. In the final minutes Nicolas Anelka headed a great opportunity straight to the keeper. Juan Mata provided the inspiration in a 3-1 defeat of Everton; he started the sequence that lead to Daniel Sturridge’s opener and after John Terry celebrated his 350th Premier League appearance with a goal, he set up the third goal for Ramires.

Everton – Louis Saha scored a late goal against one of his former clubs in the final minute to clinch a 3-1 triumph over Fulham

at Craven Cottage that ended a three-match losing streak. Royston Drenthe struck from long distance in the third minute to provide a 1-0 lead, and after Saha’s winner, Jack Rodwell tallied in stoppage time. A five-match unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge ended with a 3-1 defeat in which late substitute Apostolos Vellios scored with his first touch after com-ing off the bench.

Fulham – Bobby Zamora clipped the crossbar after rounding Everton keeper Tim Howard, and seconds later the Cottagers

conceded the winning goal in a 3-1 home defeat. Substitute Bryan Ruiz equalized with a sublime chip three minutes after coming

into the match midway through the second half. Andrew Johnson hit a hat-trick in a 6-0 rout of Queen’s Park Rangers that brought the Cottagers their first win of the season. Danny Murphy scored from the penalty spot and Clint Dempsey and Zamora tacked on late goals.

Liverpool – Craig Bellamy scored to commemorate his first Liverpool start since May, 2007 but the final score, 1-1, wasn’t cause for celebration. Bellamy

scored in the final minute of the first half against the club he left 11 years ago and Liverpool hit the woodwork three times while conceding the equalizer to Norwich. A Steven Gerrard free kick midway through the second half provided a 1-0 lead against Manchester United that Liverpool failed to hold as they settled instead for a 1-1 draw.

Manchester City – An historic 6-1 pummeling of Man United sent City five points clear atop the table. Mario Balotelli, who had returned to the team after

suspension, scored the first two and Edin Dzeko also hit a pair. Sergio Aguero and David Silva added goals as City won at Old Trafford for only the second time in 27 years. Balotelli’s goal on a spectacular overhead kick triggered a 4-1 rout of Aston Villa in which Adam Johnson, Vincent Kompany and James Milner piled on the misery.

Manchester United – Fol-lowing the dismissal of Jonny Evans in the second minute of the second half, Manchester City drilled United, 6-1. Darren

Fletcher scored a consolation goal 10 min-utes from time, after which City overran an exhausted team to score three goals in the final minutes. The defeat, United’s first home loss since April 2010, ended United’s record run of 19 consecutive home league wins. Javier Hernandez reached a Danny Wellbeck flick to head home an 81st-minute equalizer for a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Newcastle – Yohan Ca-baye’s first goal for the Magpies earned them a 1-0 defeat of Wigan. The summer signing from Lille converted a knock-

back by substitute Sylvain Marveaux in the 80th minute to run their unbeaten start to nine games. A stunning save by goalie Tim Krul in the opening minutes aided the Magpies’ cause.

Norwich City – Grant Holt head-ed home an equalizer just three minutes after coming off the bench at Anfield as the Canaries claimed a

1-1 draw despite being outshot, 29-12. An-thony Pilkington crossed a ball that the keeper missed and Holt headed home powerfully on the hour. Two classy finishes by Pilkington propelled Norwich past Swansea City, 3-1. He opened the scoring 50 seconds into the match and after Russell Martin doubled the Canaries’ lead with a header, Pilkington sealed the win by swivelling onto a Bradley Johnson pass and sweeping it into the net.

Queen’s Park Rangers – Heidar Helguson tucked away a penalty kick in the 10th minute and QPR held out against nine men to beat Chelsea for the first

time in 16 years, 1-0, and win their first home game since promotion. Helguson scored after

he took the ball from Adel Taraabt, who later stormed off upon being substituted. After a 6-0 thrashing at Fulham, a Helguson goal in the 16th minute was cancelled out by a Blackburn equalizer eight minutes later in a 1-1 draw.

Stoke City – Peter Crouch headed an equalizer 10 minutes before halftime at the Emirates Stadium in a 3-1 defeat. Glenn

Whelan lofted a disputed free kick into the area, Ryan Shawcross cross found its way to Jon Walters at the far post and his header back across goal was nodded in by Crouch. Late goals from Jon Walters (80th minute) and Rory Delap (87th) secured a 2-0 defeat of Fulham; Walters re-directed a Matthew Etherington shot to break the deadlock, and Delap headed in an Etherington free-kick. The win gave Stoke 12 points in their first eight matches.

Sunderland – Stephane Sessegnon and Nicklas Bendt-ner scored goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to earn

the Black Cats their first away win of the season, a 2-0 triumph at Bolton. Sessegnon turned onto a poorly cleared corner kick to smash home the winner in the 82nd minute and Bendtner scored in stoppage time. Ahmed Elmohamady and Bendtner scored their first goals for the club to rescue a 2-2 draw after a disastrous start had dropped the Black Cats into a 2-0 lead at home after just five minutes.

Swansea City – Goals by Danny Graham and Joe Allen at Molineux provided the Swans with a 2-0 halftime lead over Wolves,

yet their first Barclays Premier League away win escaped them. Instead Swansea con-ceded two in the final minutes and ended up at 2-2. Graham controlled a pass from Mark Gower to score midway through the first half, and set up Allen 12 minutes later. Graham had the Swans’ only goal in a 3-1 loss at Norwich.

Tottenham Hotspur – Rafael Van der Vaart scored early in each half as Spurs won 2-1 at Blackburn. The victory moved them up to fifth place and marked their sixth game unbeaten in all competitions.

American keeper Brad Friedel survived a fumbled cross to record four saves as Spurs were outshot, 20-9, yet prevailed. Jermaine Defoe’s equalizer midway through the second half, tacked onto a Van der Vaart penalty kick, snared Spurs a 2-2 draw at Newcastle.

West Bromwich Albion – After failing to convert a penalty kick, Chris Brunt set up chances that Jonas Olsson and Paul Scharner

put away to post a 2-1 win over a 10-man Aston Villa. Brunt fired wide from the spot, then atoned with precise corner kicks that Olsson and Scharner directed into the Villa net. Brunt scored in the eighth minute and Peter Odemwingie tallied four minutes after coming on as a sub to give WBA its first top-flight win over Wolverhampton for 29 years, 2-0.

Wigan Athletic – The Latics’ losing streak ran to six matches with a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle. Hugo Rodallega started his first

game after missing a month with a knee injury, and nearly scored twice in the opening minutes while also heading down a ball for Victor Moses to volley and force an excellent save, but a goal conceded in the 80th minute sent them to defeat. The Latics were beaten at home by Bolton, 3-1, despite Mohamed Diame’s equalizer in the 40th minute.

Wolverhampton – Wolves ended a five-match losing streak by rallying from a 2-0 deficit to tie Swansea City, 2-2, at Molineux.

Kevin Doyle and Jamie O’Hara scored late goals two minutes apart to avoid defeat, though the pressure on manager Mick Mc-Carthy and his players increased when they were booed off the field at halftime. His double-change of Adam Hammill and Matt Jarvis for Nenad Milijas and Adlene Guedioura midway through the second half helped turn the match around.•Homemade Meat Pies •Pasties, Bangers & Mash.

World Cup Semi-FinalsWales 8 France 9

WALES lost their chance of proceeding to the World Cup final just before the end of the first quarter of their semi-final against France. First, their world-class prop Adam Jones limped off the pitch, then Irish ref Alain Rolland sent off the Welsh captain Sam Warburton for ‘tipping’, another name for a spear tackle.

It was a terrible decision for the slow-motion replay indicated quite clearly that Warburton had made a fair tackle and had released the player, letting him fall. The French made a big deal of the tackle, hoping one presumes to get a penalty – they did – and maybe even a yellow card. For the remaining hour there was only ever going to be one winner. On a rugby pitch 14 never beat 15, certainly not 16, for the French also had the referee on their side.

Welsh heroics almost caused the greatest upset of all time since the final margin of victory was a single point. Indeed, had their kickers been anywhere near in touch, Wales should have won: they missed six opportuni-ties of varying degrees of difficulty. As it was, it was France who fell to their knees at the end, astonished to have survived.

For the record, Mike Phillips scored a try of absolute genius. The conversion would have won the game for his side but the ever-reliable kicker Stephen Jones saw the ball bounce back off the post. Triumph and disaster are so close at such moments.

New Zealand 20 Australia 6The All Blacks completely outplayed

Australia in a thoroughly one-sided contest. Ma’a Nonu scored the single try of the game but the Wallabies had no answer to the speed and power the New Zealanders brought to the game.

Third-place finalAustralia 21 Wales 18

The final result flattered a Welsh side that had given their all against France the previous week. The Wallabies always looked more

solid in defence and more sure-footed in their kicking game.

But Wales paraded their new talent and demonstrated that they may be on the brink of a new golden age, such is the wealth of youthful promise in this side. This was illus-trated in the final try touched down late after full-time. It climaxed a passage of play that began deep in the Welsh half and proceeded through 30-odd phases of play before Leigh Halfpenny was released to run round the last despairing line of defence and score behind the posts.

That movement saw passing, forward play and commitment of the highest order. It illustrated what most ob-servers here in New Zealand felt: that Wales deserved to reach the final and they would have pushed the All Blacks to the very end.

This was Shane Williams’ last appearance on the world stage.

He scored a try of typical genius to put Wales ahead briefly after the break. He has done this 58 times before in a glittering career - one of the greatest players ever to don the red shirt. Will be be knighted for his services to the game? You can be sure he won’t!

World Cup Final

New Zealand 8 France 7This was not a classic. Red hot favourites

New Zealand did what they needed – just! A couple of flashes of brilliance lit up the night. The All Black forward unit produced one clear breakthrough in the line-out for hooker Tony Woodcock to romp over for an easy try early on. In the second half Thierry Dusautoir capped an impressive French move with an irresistible drive over the line.

Had the French possessed a kicker, they had a couple of opportunities to win but this was a rugged battle which had only one posi-tive: it gave the World Cup to New Zealand for the first time since the inaugural competition back in 1987.

The British neutral was left wondering whether Wales would have beaten both of them.

Tevez Fined By City For Misconduct On Bench

MANCHESTER CITY striker Carlos Tevez was fined a month’s wages last month but can keep playing despite being found guilty of five breaches of contract for misconduct on the bench during a Champions League match.

City’s disciplinary hearing found that Tevez disobeyed club officials when he did not come off the bench during last month’s 2-0 loss.

Tevez was immediately suspended for two weeks by City. Despite manager Roberto Mancini saying the Argentina international wouldn’t play for the club again, he received no ban from the panel. Instead, Tevez must pay a $1.6m fine and received a written warning about his future conduct.

Topping the list of five contractual breach-es, City said Tevez had not fulfilled “an obliga-tion to participate in any matches in which the player is selected to play for the club when directed by a club official”.

City also said Tevez did not follow the instructions of his manager, and brought the club into disrepute.

Tevez has 14 days to appeal against the decision. He would also have the right to a second appeal to the Premier League. That whole process could run into December.

The striker has been training alone since returning from suspension early October.

Sunderland’s US Owner Replaces Quinn As Chairman

SUNDERLAND’S American owner Ellis Short is taking over as chairman of the Premier League club, replacing Niall Quinn.

Sunderland said former striker Quinn will “relinquish his day-to-day chairman’s duties” to take on a job spearheading international development for the club.

Short says UEFA’s new financial regula-tions makes it “essential for the long-term success of the club that we develop interests on a global scale.”

The Texas businessman assumed full control of Sunderland in 2009 after buying a stake the previous year.

Suarez – Evra In Race RowLIVERPOOL striker Luis Suarez says he is “upset” at allegations he racially abused Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a Premier League match.

England’s Football Association has launched an investigation after Evra, a black French left back, told French TV station Canal Plus that Suarez leveled racist insults at him during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Suarez wrote on his official Facebook page that he was “upset by the accusations of racism” made by Evra.

The Uruguay international says “I can only say that I have always respected and respect everybody. We are all the same.”

Liverpool said that Suarez “categorically denies the allegations.”

Lebron James Takes His Talents To Liverpool

LEBRON JAMES took his talents to Liverpool last month – and finally got his hands on a championship trophy.

The Miami Heat star toured the Premier League club’s facilities for the first time

since becoming a shareholder of the 18-time English champions. James held up the Champions League trophy won by Liverpool in 2005 and posted a picture on Twitter of a red No 6 jersey with his name on it.

The two-time MVP sat in the directors’ box at Anfield Stadium for last month’s Premier League match where Liverpool drew 1-1 with Manchester United.

“Jersey ready for the big match 2morrow,” James tweeted.

James brought the club store “to a stand-still,” the website said, after spending 20 minutes shopping for scarves and clothes for his two young sons back home.

In April, James obtained a small stake in Fenway Sports Group, which owns Liverpool and the Red Sox.

McClaren Quits Forest After Just 10 Matches

STEVE MCCLAREN resigned last month from Nottingham Forest after 10 matches in charge, ending his brief return to manage-ment in England.

The former England coach quit shortly af-ter last month’s 3-1 home loss to Birmingham left the second-tier team two points off the bottom of the standings.

McClaren joined Forest on a three-year contract in the offseason after rehabilitating his managerial reputation on the continent with FC Twente. And despite being mocked back home for speaking English with a Dutch accent, he enjoyed great success on the pitch, with Twente winning the domestic league.

Twente won the Dutch league at the end of McClaren’s second season in May 2010 before he was lured by Wolfsburg where he was fired six months into the campaign.

Brazil World Cup Hectic For Travel And KO Times

BRITS living in the US will be happier with the Brazil 2014 football kickoff times than their compatriates back home. The schedule was released last month and sees matches kicking off as late as 10pm local time, which means 2am live viewing in the UK. However, in the US that will vary between 2pm and 8pm.

Also, in a change of plans FIFA have not grouped clubs in sectors which could be a major concern. For example, one team in Group A will have to play the opening match of the tournament in Sao Paulo, their second match 2,000 miles away in Manaus, and the third in Recife – another three-and-a-half-hour flight away, or a 3,540-mile road trip through the Amazon jungle.

Organisers said the decision to move the teams between the different areas of the country was partly to ensure that individual sides did not benefit from playing games all in the cooler climate of the south of Brazil.

Radcliffe: Britain’s Olympic Doping Ban Is UnfairBy Rob Harris

MARATHON world record-holder Paula Radcliffe has changed her stance regarding Britain’s lifetime Olympic bans for doping offenders, saying it unfairly penalizes com-patriots like sprinter Dwain Chambers.

Britain is the only country with such a strong sanction, but it is under threat since the Court of Arbitration for Sport last month overturned an IOC rule that bars any athlete who has received a doping suspension of more than six months from competing in the next Olympics.

While the verdict cleared the way for Olympic 400-meter champion LaShawn Merritt to defend his title next year in Lon-don, Chambers is still barred because of the national rules.

Radcliffe said in an interview with The Associated Press last month that such an isolated stance by the British Olympic As-sociation unjustly singles out the country’s athletes.

“I actually supported the rule that if you had a drugs ban you shouldn’t be allowed to compete in the Olympics – it should be a life ban,” Radcliffe told the AP. “But at the

moment it’s unfair because Dwain is the only one who is really being penalized for it. ... It has to be a rule that’s fair across the board ... it isn’t fair to penalize Dwain.”

Chambers tested positive for THG in 2003, becoming the first athlete connected to BALCO founder Victor Conte to test positive for the previously undetectable steroid.

“He is one of the few who stuck his hands up and said ‘I did cheat and I’m sorry,’ and admitted it,” Radcliffe said after opening a Nike store near to London’s Olympic Stadium. “A lot of people have done their time and never admitted it and they are allowed to come back and compete, and that isn’t fair. ... It has to be a proper rule. I would rather see every country takes the BOA’s rule on board but if not I think you have to have some sympathy for Dwain and the situation he is in.”

WADA’s European director Frederic Donze told the AP earlier this week that lifetime Olympic bans do not appear to be legally enforceable. However, British Olympic As-sociation chairman Colin Moynihan said last week that 90 percent of British athletes supported the lifetime ban.

Jenson Button Agrees To New

McLaren ContractFORMULA ONE driver Jenson Button signed a new multi-year contract with McLaren on last month.

The 31-year-old former world cham-pion joined McLaren at the beginning of the 2010 season and his deal was due to expire this year – though the English team had an option to extend it until 2012.

“I’ve never felt more at home at a team than I do at McLaren,” Button said. “I’ve won four of the greatest races of my life here, I’m currently lying second in the drivers’ world championship, and I feel that I’m driving better than ever.

Button, who won the world title with Brawn GP in 2009, is second in the drivers’ standings behind runaway leader Sebastian Vettel with five races to go.

Olympic Stadium Deal Collapses For West HamIN A DRAMATIC turnabout, the Gov-ernment last month said that West Ham United’s deal to take over the Olympic Stadium had collapsed.

Ministers are said to be concerned that le-gal action by Tottenham and Leyton Orient could drag on for years by which time the showcase venue would remain empty.

The stadium, in Stratford, east London, will instead remain in public ownership and be leased out to a tenant following a new tender process.

Under the new process the cost of transforming it after the 2012 Games will be met by the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC).

The successful tenant will then pay an annual rent to the OPLC, which could, ironicallly, prove to be less costly for the likes of West Ham.

Some £35m of public money has been set aside to convert the 80,000-capacity stadium into a 60,000-seater venue after the Games next year.

Prospective tenants will then be asked to bid for the stadium, with the running track remaining in place.

Spurs’ bid for the stadium had included removing the running track, while West Ham had elected to keep it and allow the venue to remain central to London’s bid for the 2017 World Athletics Champion-ships.
