Anti-Redhead Hate Crime City To Host ‘Ginger Pride’ Festival

IN AN ANSWER to recently-released police figures showing an increasing number of crimes against people with red hair, three Plymouth redheads are organizing a “Ginger Pride” festival.

Stuart Parry, John Harding and Krissy Lancaster have started laying out plans for the big Ginger event next year.

Officers in Plymouth have published crime figures following a Freedom of Information request revealing a series of incidents where victims have been targeted solely because of their hair colour. The incidents include a seri-ous assault and other reports of harassment against people with ginger locks.

Some have argued that England has a particularly strong history of anti-Ginger sentiment linked to anti-Celtic, anti-Irish and anti-Scots prejudice.

EastEnders actress Patsy Palmer later revealed she had been bullied so badly at school for having red hair that she had to undergo therapy.

Parry said that the gingers are now fight-ing back and he puts the resurgence down to the rise of celebrities such as actors Eddie Redmayne and Damian Lewis, singer Ed Sheeran and model Lily Cole.

Prince Harry has brought a royal touch to the movement while Rupert Grint of Harry Potter fame has also been a popular member of the famous ginger club.

Parry said: “We want to celebrate the fact that we are little bit different, but not too different. The only thing we have in common is our hair colour, but that gives us shared experiences.”

The event, which is to be called Gingers: The Gathering, is expected to include ginger-themed food and drink and a carrot cake contest.

Husband Thought New Puppy Was A Jack Russell – Now

Owns Britain’s Largest DogROBERT MARKHAM thought he and his wife were buying a Jack Russell, since he didn’t want a large dog. Unfortunately his missus was less than honest to him … the couple now own Britain’s biggest dog!

Markham is now the proud owner of a fully-grown Boston Great Dane, Yogi, who enjoys a cooked breakfast of FOUR scrambled eggs and sausages every morn-ing but likes nothing more than snacking on yoghurt, popcorn, bananas and milk when he’s feeling peckish between meals

Markham was lied to by wife Sue about the tiny 1lb 5oz puppy after she fell in love with the pooch and decided she must have him.

Her husband frequently told how he did not want a “big dog”, but he had no idea that Yogi would not stop growing and eventually turn into a 210lb monster who eats a stag-gering £37 of food every week.

Yogi, or Bear as he is now known in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, now has his own three-acre paddock for exercise and wears an outdoor horse coat since he was too big for any designed for dogs.

Yogi, now nine, has even claimed his own sofa, eats cooked breakfasts and has adopted his own pet cat.

Robert said: “He manages to squeeze into the back seat of our Volkswagon Bora, but

only just. Wherever he goes he turns heads and has people coming over to see him.

‘Paint It Black’ – Not The Song, St Mirren’s Away Team

Dressing RoomSCOTTISH Championship team St Mirren have come up with a novel way they feel will put away teams at a disadvantage.

Buddies chiefs ordered decorators to paint the walls in the away changing room black, in a bid to put visiting players off their game. This season visitors are finding the décor in the away dressing room at the St Mirren Park ground to be less than welcoming . . . all black.

Chief Executive at the Buddies, Brian Caldwell, said he was determined to do all he can to make sure the team manager and the team have the best chance possible to be promoted back up to the Scottish Premier-ship this season.

Caldwell believes having no bright colours in the other team’s dressing room will depress them and, hopefully, put them off their top form.

Cadwell’s theory is based upon research suggesting that staring at a black wall for any length of time can leave you temporarily depressed.

The away team will also have to walk past a display of St Mirren’s previous achieve-ments as they make their way down the tunnel before games, in a bid to add to the fear factor.

Caldwell told the Paisley Daily Express: “It all came about after a discussion with our star striker Steven Thompson, who said we have been too soft on our opponents in the past.

‘SPAMbassador’ Title For Man After Spending £37,000

On His AddictionTHERE came a day when Chris Stephens probably sang to himself: “Might as well face it you’re addicted to … Spam”. The reason? He is, and has spent £37,000 on the tinned processed meat to back that up.

Lorry driver Stephens, 61, has eaten the canned meat every day for 60 years. And in honour of his dedication, makers Hormel Foods have made him a – “Spambassador”.

Stephens, of Llanedeyrn, south Wales enjoys at least a tin of Spam a day – and that’s even after being ordered to cut down by his wife.

“It’s such an iconic brand and I’ve grown up eating Spam every day. I love the flavour and would eat multiple cans a day but my wife has put me on a diet. “She thinks I’m crazy and my love of Spam drives her mad but she understands it’s an essential part of my daily diet. I couldn’t imagine travelling abroad without it.” Stephens said.

And he added: “Being asked to become Spambassador for Wales is a huge honour.”

Spam, pork shoulder meat and ham, was introduced in 1937 and gained global popu-larity in World War II, when it was delivered to the front line as a substitute for fresh meat.

Hormel claims that the meaning of the name “is known by only a small circle of for-mer Hormel Foods executives”, but popular beliefs are that the name is an abbreviation of “spiced ham” or “shoulders of pork and ham”. Another popular explanation is that

Spam is an acronym standing for “Specially Processed American Meat”.

Footnote: Calling unwanted email Spam has done nothing to harm worldwide Spam sales. Nor did the Monty Python skit song “Spam”.

Woman Discovers Wedding Ring Is Not Hers – Locates Her

Own After Radio InterviewMARIANNE CROWLEY was baffled last month when she, quite accidentally, found out she was wearing someone else’s wed-ding ring.

It started with just an every-day chat between friends when Marianne Crowley, trying to remember the date of her anniver-sary, asked her coworker to read what day in September her wedding ring was inscribed.

Crowley removed her ring and asked her pal to tell her which day in September the ring said – and was startled when her co-worker said the ring was inscribed with July 1993. Crowley, who married her husband Flor in 1997, was shocked to find out the ring she’d been wearing was not her own.

But, after appearing on and Irish radio show, Joe Duffy’s Liveline on RTE Radio 1, and sharing the story of how she discov-ered she’d been wearing somebody else’s wedding ring, the woman who had her ring recognized the story.

The listener, kept the ring in a special place. Crowley said: “She got to the safe and lo and behold out comes the wedding ring with the F.C.-M.S. inscription on it.

Crowley said the woman immediately got in contact after hearing her on the show

In an amazing coincidence the woman, who lives in the same village as the Crowley’s share a mutual friend who runs a cooking class that both had attended in the past.

Even though neither woman remembers taking off their ring, they think the swap might’ve happened then.

It’s possible that the women have been wearing each other’s rings for up to four years, according to Marianne.

Essex Lady Nabs Little Bargain On The Internet … But,

Unfortunately It was ‘Too Little’

SHOPPING for online bargains was brand new to Christine Harford. So, imagine her excitement at the good luck of spotting two beautiful deck chairs at £1.89 last month.

A quick click and Harford, 55, was on her way to her first internet bargain … she thought.

But, unfortunately she was in for a little

surprise, quite little. In fact so little she could hold both old-fashioned deck chairs in one hand!

Harford, from Aveley, Essex, said: “I knew what I wanted, an old-fashioned deckchair and people were saying to me ‘you should look on e-Bay’ and that there were some good offers on the internet.’

“When I saw the price, I couldn’t believe it, they were a right bargain.

“Even with the delivery, which cost much more than the chairs, it was a really good deal. It was so good, I decided to get two, one for me and one for my husband.”

The bargain price was £1.89 for each chair plus £4.59 for delivery.

When a small parcel dropped through the letter box a few days later Harford said she had no idea what it was, “So I opened the parcel. I opened it and saw clothes pegs inside and thought ‘I haven’t ordered any clothes pegs’.

“Then I opened it some more and saw the material and there I was holding these deckchairs in the palm of my hand.”

After re-reading the order, Christine realised what she had really paid for – two 1:12 scale miniature deckchairs measuring around 10cm by 5cm.

Christine added: “I suppose the moral of the story is always read everything carefully when you’re buying online.

One Tenant Living Like A Pig … Because It Was … A Pig

LANDLORD Gary Armstrong was informed by a builder working on his rental that there was a hole in the garden that appeared to be that made by a very large dog.

The home was Armstrong’s parents, for who he was renting the property out.

Armstrong had a “no pets” agreement so he paid a visit to the property but didn’t see the entire inside of the home.

On a second visit Armstrong said: “The whole thing started to come together as the state of the house and garden were not consistent with a dog. On that inspection we had been kept out of one room where I suspect a pig was hiding.”

Eventually the 50lb Vietnamese Pot-Bellie pig was revealed. Plus, the tenants had dam-aged the property internally and externally.

“Friends, family and the professionals involved have all been stunned by what was found in the house,” Armstrong told the Gainsborough Standard.

Armstrong added: “I have gone above and beyond my duty for this landlord and will continue to do so.”

Man’s Lost Wallet Returned 30 Years Later … Still Had A £1 Note Inside

DEREK GAMBLE was amazed last month when a wallet he lost 30 years ago was returned to him, and still had £1 note inside, along with other personal items.

Gamble, a farmer, was in his 30s when he lost the wallet on the seat of a train in the Loughborough area.

The wallet has remained wedged into the back of the seat until it was discovered by volunteer Michael Massey, 70, when the carriage underwent restoration at the North Norfolk Railway.

Incredibly, it contained the old £1 note

as well as several coins, a dollar, and a railway badge. It also contained a receipt dating back to 1982 and a booking slip for a trip to Ireland.

Luckily, the receipt happened to have an address for a Derek B Gamble in Rugby, Warwickshire.

So, Massey, who drives the North Norfolk Railways diesel multiple units, decided to track down the owner.

He managed to find a Derek B Gamble living near Rugby in West Haddon and after calling him up discovered it was the same person.

Coincidentally Gamble happened to be visiting Norfolk on holiday and popped in to the North Norfolk line to collect his long-lost possession.

Gamble said: “I am pleased and a little surprised to be reunited with my wallet. Its contents bring back memories of what my family and I were doing over 30 years ago.”

Mum Breastfeeding Her Baby And Her Friend’s Causes Big

Facebook DebateA FACEBOOK photo Jessica Anne Colletti posted of her feeding her 16-month-old son and her friend’s 18-month-old boy has brought mixed opinions.

Married mother Colletti describes the babies as “milk siblings”.

Colletti added: “I watch her son while she works and have been feeding them both for a year!

The post has been liked almost 500 times, but received mixed reaction from readers. Colletti also shared the intimate snap with the parenting blog Mama Bean Unconditional Attachment, which promotes breastfeeding.

Posts included:“This is amazing!! If only this was more

widely accepted us mums wouldn’t have such a hard time doing things or working.

“I’m lucky enough to be able to feed my son while he is in childcare but lots of people cannot. What a different world it would be if we went back to older more natural ways.”

Another added: “Wet nurse. As long as her friend is ok with it, then it’s perfectly fine. Just like having twins.... I bet she is using mad calories nursing two!!!

“Honestly, not any different than donat-ing. In fact, both are getting better benefits of the milk because it’s not frozen or altered in any way. 100 percent fresh.”

This Mum posted: “Yeah I don’t know how I feel about this. I truly believe it is a sacred bond that should only be shared by mother and baby.

“I feel breastfeeding someone else’s baby is totally over stepping. Unless they’ve asked you to. Then go for your life. Still not sure about it though.”

Colletti later told blog author Louise : “Breastfeeding my friend’s son came naturally to me.

“I started babysitting him when he was five months old and the first time she dropped him off to me I asked permission to nurse him, since I was already nursing my three month old.

“Being able to breastfeed her little boy has created a special bond between us all, a bond I will always cherish.”

A COUPLE of great Beatles stories from the UK capital this month. A letter to Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, apparently penned in 1967 by Ernest O’Follipar Chief Executive at the Royal Albert Hall was found in the Hall’s own archives. It demanded a change in the words of A Day in the Life. The song refers to the number of holes in the Albert Hall and Mr O’Follipar took exception to this pointing out how well-maintained the build-ing was! There was also a dismissive reply from John Lennon, addressed to “Prince Albert and friends” basically telling him to get lost. However, a little digging by your columnist reveals that the whole thing was something of an elaborate hoax. Probably the biggest giveaway is that the CEO’s name is an anagram for “April Fool”!

However, for real, is an exhibition of previ-ously unseen Beatles’ photographs from their first tour of the United States in February 1964. A rather lovely, bistro-type, Italian restaurant called simply Forty Dean Street, right in the middle of Soho has twenty unique images on display which you can enjoy whilst munching through divine pasta washed down with a nice glass of their recommended Gavi di Gavi. The photographs are by Joe Allen and really capture the informality and fun which surrounded the band in those early days of fame. It is possible also to buy limited edition (25) copies of these great images and own a very small slice of Beatlemania.A Bridge Too Far?

No such thing say Londoners. TV and film star, Joanna Lumley is behind

the wonderful Garden Bridge project and so it seems is the population of the capital. The plan is to build a pedestrian bridge between London’s Southbank and Temple. The bridge will become a park in itself with trees and plants and a meandering trail from one side to the other. The Garden Bridge Trust, the charity

raising the money for the ambitious project, found 78 percent of the local residents they questioned to be in favour of the idea. A third of the whopping £60m ($93m) cost of the bridge will have to be met by taxpayers so let’s hope the enthusiasm continues when people realise they will have to pay for it.By Royal Appointment

A rare opportunity occurs every summer to visit the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace. These are the formal areas of the Queen’s London residence which few get to see un-less they are lucky enough to be invited to a royal banquet with a foreign head of state or receive an honour from Her Majesty or another member of the royal family. Each year the Queen jets off to her estate at Balmoral in sunny Scotland, leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind her. For this short time only, the state apartments are open to the public and offer a truly fantastic day out. The sheer sense of history in a building which has been the London residence of the monarch since the times of George III engulfs you but seems weirdly familiar as we have all seen so many events there on our TV screens.

Apparently most of the State Rooms have not been redecorated since the Queen was crowned over sixty years ago but actually they look just fine with magnificent guilding, marble and plasterwork and chandeliers that are the stuff of dreams. The very small part of the monarch’s art collection on display is worth the visit alone.

However “urgent repairs” are understood to be needed throughout the palace at an estimated cost in excess of £150m ($230m) which may even require the Queen to vacate the palace for a full year. So try to see it this summer and your entrance fee will go in a small way (along with the six million other people who have visited since 1993) to pre-serve this astonishing royal London heritage.

The Queen’s husband, 94-year-old Prince

Magical Mystery Tour

Philip meanwhile continued his long history of making slightly inappropriate quips at an official engagement in east London recently. When meeting a group of women running a community health centre, his “who do you sponge off?” question could easily have been taken the wrong way by trustee Nusart Zamir but was actually laughed off. So, seemingly was his obvious genuine desire to know whether or not a professional fundraiser he met had any friends left! All this, coming just a week after his exasperated “just take the f****** picture” when posing for a family group photograph at the palace, confirms the Duke remains on fine form!Kids at Work!

KidZania, the children’s indoor theme park where they can be anything from a policeman to a worker in a chocolate factory is the lat-est import from the United States to hit West London. At the Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherd’s Bush, you can leave your kids for supervised play with more than 60 activities on hand whilst you shop till you drop or even have a drink at the bar.

KidZania is hailed as “the child-sized city where the kids are in charge”. Next stop the House of Commons maybe.Lanesborough Reborn

A few years ago, I was having lunch at the Lanesborough Hotel on Hyde Park Corner and who should be sitting at the next table but the late, great Sir David Frost. I had bumped into him before and we nodded and said hello – to this day I am sure he thought he knew me but could not quite place me! It was a fine hotel back in those days but then closed in the way of all such hotels (like the Savoy and the Ritz in Paris) for a facelift which took several years.

It has now re-opened after a Regency-inspired refurbishment. This landmark five-star hotel boasts unparalleled luxury including a magnificent seven bedroomed suite with two sitting rooms and a butler – a snip at just £26,000 ($40,000) per night. The cheapest double rooms start at £715 ($1,100) and the wonderful Celeste restaurant has tasting menus starting at £130 ($200), placing this very much at the elite end of smart places to stay in London.

“But I really don’t know whether I deserve it.”

Mr Hollande said Mr Norman, and Americans Spencer Stone, Alek Skarlatos, and Anthony Sadler, showed “that faced with terror, we have the power to resist”.

He told the four men the entire world admired their courage and “spirit of soli-darity”, adding they “must be an example for all, and a source of inspiration”.

A spokesman for Number 10 said the prime minister had praised the “extraor-dinary courage” of the men, saying “the bravery of Mr Norman and the other passengers helped to prevent a terrible incident”.

Mr Stone and Mr Skarlatos are members of the Air Force and the National Guard respectively.

They were travelling on the train from Amsterdam to Paris on August 21 evening with their childhood friend Mr Sadler, who also helped to restrain the attacker.

LONDON’S nightlife has always been popular, but last month it emerged that certain nightclub promoters in London are telling people they will be refused entry if they are considered ‘too fat’.

Promoters also say older guests, anyone who isn’t pretty enough and anyone who is too short may be refused at the door.

Leaked text messages sent by pro-moters for Cirque le Soir suggest an unofficial list of rules, suggesting anyone who is overweight or “big” will be turned away by doormen.

Female guests are also told to wear high heels, dress “hot” and “glamorous” and wear make-up that is “on fleek”.

Men meanwhile are told to bring a good ratio of women if they want to make it into the club.

According to SWNS news agency, Cirque le Soir has distanced itself from these promoters, saying this is not their policy and the promoters are not em-ployed by the nightclub.

UNDER FIREThe club that plays host to A-list ce-

lebs like Cara Delevingne and Rihanna has come under fire after promoters asked punters not to bring people – who are fat. Promoters also sent out a text to people on their VIP list, outlining the stringent rules for entry into exclusive areas – including “do not bring any big/fat girls/guys.” Girls hoping to party at cen-tral London hotspot Cirque le Soir were also told to “Dress glamorous/hot” in all black. Promoters added that the Soho club, where a bottle of Champagne can fetch £1,000, would turn away fat people.

The messages also suggest groups might be charged more if they are con-sidered unattractive.

Another message shows a promoter telling someone “old people” will ‘have to pay’.

And warning them to look good.

Short women meanwhile only just make the cut.

But only if they wear high heels.Journalism student Elouise Bratt,

19, received one of the messages from promoters and said she was horrified.

Elouise, who studies at Nottingham Trent University and is originally from Gants Hill, east London, said: “It’s dis-gusting and it’s discriminatory. They are wrong. It is very superficial.”

A Cirque le Soir spokesman told SWNS: “Cirque le Soir would like to comment on recent reports in the media regarding our door policy and treatment of customers.

“We would like to distance ourselves from comments made by a so-called “promoter” who is not employed by us in any capacity and reassure you that this is not our door policy whatsoever.

“We would like to reiterate comments made have not come from anyone at Cirque le Soir, nor anyone connected to the club. We are a globally identified brand known for celebrating diversity, and remain committed to offering every-one a night out like no other.”

Protesters Inhale Laughing GasDOZENS OF giggling demonstrators have inhaled laughing gas outside Britain’s Parliament to protest gov-ernment plans to ban it and other “legal highs.”

The Conservative government has announced a crackdown on psycho-active substances, drafting a bill to outlaw the sale for non-medical pur-poses of mood-altering drugs, exclud-ing alcohol, nicotine and caffeine.

The ban would include nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, which is used as a dental anesthetic and also taken recreationally by weekend clubbers.

Protesters last month filled bal-loons with the gas and breathed in, many erupting into giggles on the Parliament Square lawn.

Protest organizer Stephen Reid of the Psychedelic Society said psycho-

active substances “can be risky, but it should be for individuals to decide whether or not to take the risk.”

BIG-VOICED singer Cilla Black, was not only a part of the Mersey Sound, but be-came a national treasure over a 50-year music and television career.

A coroner’s report confirmed that Black died of a stroke after falling over at her Spanish home. The 72-year-old was sunbathing at her villa when she stood up, lost her balance and fell hitting her head, which knocked her unconscious. She subsequently died of a stroke, and would not have suffered.

The celebrity’s death left thousands sad, and reminiscent of her achieve-ments.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney said news of Black’s death came as a shock. “She had a fine distinctive voice and was always a bit of a laugh. It was a privilege to know and love her,” McCartney said in a statement.

CLOAKROOMRingo Starr tweeted: “She was a good

friend we will all miss her.”Black was born Priscilla White in Liv-

erpool, in 1943. As a teenager she sang part-time and worked in the cloakroom of the Cavern Club, where her musical talent was spotted by rising local stars The Beatles.

Signed by the Fab Four’s manager, Brian Epstein, she had a string of hits

starting in 1964 with Anyone Who Had a Heart, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and You’re My World. Both went to No 1 in Britain, and the latter also charted in the US

She also had success with the Bacha-rach-David theme tune for the 1966 film Alfie, and recorded several Beatles songs, including The Long and Winding Road.

FAMOUSBy the late ‘60s she was famous

enough to be known by her first name alone, and hosted a BBC variety show, Cilla.

With her reliable good cheer and tire-less work ethic, Black was a TV natural. Her catchphrase – delivered in a strong Liverpool accent that replaced the letter “t” with “r” – was “a lorra, lorra laughs.”

She became a British television fixture as the cheeky, cheery host of matchmak-ing game show (between 1985 and 2003) and heartwarming-reunion program Sur-prise Surprise (between 1984 and 2001).

“She always felt like a friend in your living room, on your TV screen,” televi-sion executive Michael Grade told Sky News.

In a tweet, her friend Joan Collins called Black “a resplendent and rare talent.”

Black’s manager and husband of 30 years, Bobby Willis, died in 1999. She is survived by their three sons.

BRITAIN and France last month an-nounced tougher security tools to guard the Channel Tunnel, a new joint police command to target human traffickers and 10 million euros ($11.2m) in new British government money to help asylum seek-ers – and send others back home.

The measures are aimed at overcoming diplomatic tensions around the French port of Calais, a flashpoint in a European summer marked by unusually large waves of migrants. The moves focus more on policing than humanitarian efforts.

British Home Secretary Theresa May and French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve visited the tunnel and an-nounced plans for a “substantial” increase of security guards, higher fences, surveil-lance cameras, floodlighting and infrared detection technology.

Since the start of June, at least 10 mi-grants have died trying to sneak through the Channel Tunnel to Britain, and count-less others have slipped through unde-tected. Britain and France have accused each other of not doing enough to manage the migrants.

NEW JOINT POLICE COMMAND TO TARGET TRAFFICKERS

Britain And France Crack Down On Economic Migrants In Calais

UNSANITARYAn estimated 3,000 migrants are

camped in unsanitary, hungry conditions in Calais with more arriving and leaving daily, drawing intense political attention in Britain. Elsewhere in Europe this year, Germany has seen 360,000 migrants ar-rive and 160,000 migrants have reached Greek shores.

May insisted on the importance of distinguishing between refugees fleeing war or persecution and migrants coming illegally to seek better economic prospects.

“It’s a problem that starts elsewhere in the world with migrants trying to come abroad with organized criminal gangs,” she said last month.

Britain will increase monitoring of other North Sea ports as the crackdown on Calais pushes migrants to other potential departure points, she said.

The two countries announced a new joint police command center to coordinate intelligence to disrupt migrant-trafficking gangs.

IDENTIFYINGThe overall cost of the measures was

not disclosed. But a joint statement said Britain would provide an additional five

Migrants queue for food in Calais, France. A transient population of thousands moved through the Channel port on their way to the UK.

million euros a year for the next two years for identifying and protecting the most vulnerable migrants, particularly women and children – and on sending economic migrants home.

British border guards will meet with migrants to provide “a more dissuasive and realistic sense of life for illegal migrants in the UK,” the declaration said.

Cazeneuve said French authorities have dismantled 19 trafficking networks this year.

There are now about 400 surveillance cameras, 200 French guards and 500 other French security forces surrounding the area near the tunnel entrance in Calair, British officials said.

Britain has financed four-meter-high border fences that Eurotunnel spokesman Romain Dufour says have reduced migrant storming considerably.

SKEPTICISMMigrants in Calais, however, met last

month’s announcements with skepticism, noting that as long as they hear of success stories in Britain, they will continue to risk the journey. Some staged a protest on a highway near a migrant camp, while oth-ers continued trying to sneak onto trucks traveling across the channel.

Syrian migrant Kamil, speaking from a Calais camp, said the British investment in security “is a waste of money.”

“Even if they put fences in the water, they’re not stopping us,” said Kamil, who spoke on condition that only his first name be used out of fear of being arrested.

He was joined by two Syrian friends who said they would walk two hours to the tunnel and try again.

Turning away, he said, “I’ll call when I make it to England.”

immigration, ar-guing that illegal migrants are trying to “break into” the country.

Cameron told t h e B B C l a s t month that Brit-ain has been one of the “most gener-ous countries” in Europe for granting asylum to refugees, even though it has faced criticism for failing to take in any of the ever-rising numbers of migrants.

Cameron has faced criticism since winning re-election in May for chaotic scenes involving migrants at the Chan-nel Tunnel. Hundreds of migrants in France have tried to storm fences and other tunnel security measures to try to enter Britain.

The Conservative leader says “what we can’t do is allow people to break into our country.”

A HAWKER HUNTER jet slammed onto a main dual-carriageway road August 22, after it failed to pull out of a loop maneuver during the Shoreham Airshow.

The plane plowed through cars on a road and exploded in a huge fireball.

At least 11 people died and a further 14 people were injured, four of whom were taken to hospital. Police said the death toll could continue to rise as the recovery operation progressed.

Sussex Police said the crash site is spread over about 400 yards of the busy A27 and extends to the adjoining airfield. All of those who died are thought to have been on the road.

Among them was Matt Jones, 24, a personal trainer. Two Worthing United footballers and schoolfriends Jacob Schilt, 23, and Matthew Grimstone, 23, who were travelling together, were also named as victims. Sussex Police later named Maurice Abrahams, from Brigh-ton, as one of the victims. Abrahams’ family released a tribute to the 76-year-old chauffeur, who was a former soldier and police officer.

MISSINGMeanwhile, the relatives of two men

who remain missing following the crash have made appeals to trace them. Daniele Polito was in the same car as Matt Jones, according to his family.

The other missing man, Mark Trussler, is thought to have been riding his motorbike on the A27.

Significant restrictions on vintage jets in air shows have been imposed after the Shoreham crash, the UK’s aviation regulator has announced.

The Civil Aviation Authority said they would be “limited to flypasts”, which meant “high-energy aerobatics” would not be permitted in displays over land. A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Au-thority (CAA) confirmed that all Hawker Hunter aircraft had been grounded until further notice.

The A27 highway, which runs along the south coast, was expected to remain closed for days.

THE L-1 VISA allows key workers of multina-tional companies to transfer to the US affiliate with work privileges. It is important to note that a multinational company does not have to be a large publically traded company. It can be a smaller, family run business seeking to open a new US office. There are two varieties of L-1 visas. The L-1A is for executives and managers and the L-1B is for those with “spe-cialized knowledge”, a term that has been the bane of existence of multinational companies and lawyers for many years. Over the years, the standard has tightened and loosened and has been applied differently by different adjudicators. This guidance was aimed at infusing more certainty and consistency in this critical visa category.

General eligibility criteria are:1. The overseas entity and the US entity

must be “qualifying organizations”. This most commonly occurs when the two entities are commonly owned by a third entity or when one effectively controls the other

2. The assignee has worked for the qualify-ing entity abroad for at least one year

3. The assignee has performed during that qualifying year, in either an executive, mana-gerial or in a specialized knowledge capacity.

4. The assignee will similarly perform in the US.

Generally, the definition of “specialized knowledge” has been a knowledge of the enterprise’s processes or products. The idea is that such knowledge would be rare in the US market place.

A few of the more meaningful points of the guidance are as follows:• Validity of US company’s statements

as evidence: Recently, the actual statement of the US company, as to the eligibility of the assignee, have been given varying degrees of validity. The guidance specifically makes valid these statements as long as they are detailed, specific and credible. After all, who better than the receiving company would be able to know and articulate the specialized nature of the assignee’s prospective duties?

Final L-1B Work Visa Guidance Released, Finally

• Prior adjudications: Recently USCIS and US Consulates abroad have denied L-1B ap-plication/petitions even for current L-1B visa holders seeking extensions of L-1B status. The guidance indicates that USCIS will “take note” of such prior adjudications although each application will basically stand on it’s own. After all, things change and applications should make the continued case for eligibility. • Knowledge specialized to company,

not industry: The guidance makes clear that the claimed “specialized knowledge” must be with regard to the specific companies as opposed to the industry as a whole.• Further descriptors of “specialized

knowledge” within an organization include a change in terminology from “not generally found” with “of significant value”. • Reference to assignee’s salary was

replaced with “total compensation”. This acknowledges the realities of modern corpo-rate life which includes perks as a significant part of one’s compensation package. Many international assignees prefer to remain on overseas payroll for reasons of tenure, pen-sion and other reasons.• There were some changes regarding the

scenario where L-1B workers are assigned to client site of the US entity to make sure that the company’s “specialized knowledge” is actually required for that assignment.

As with any new guidance there is cause for both optimism and pessimism. In general, more certainty is welcome. As there are still significant subject determinations that must be made by mere mortals, it is left to be seen the extent of future consistency of L-1B applications.

R By Sylvia HuiRESEARCHERS at Britain’s Cam-bridge University have released let-ters showing how slaves were priced for sale during the 18th century, giving an insight into the wealth and influence behind the pro-slavery lobby at the time.

St John’s College, which released the papers last month, said the papers helped show the powerful vested interests that the abolition-ists had to fight against – an often-neglected side of the story.

The papers date from the 1770s to the 1790s – during the peak of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade in Britain and America – and deal with the op-eration of a Jamaica sugar plantation run by English businessman William Philip Perrin.

One list containing details of slaves to be bought for Perrin’s plantation included entries such as “Dick, 25, able field negro, £140” and “Castile, 45, cook and washerwoman, £60.” The total valuation for 54 male and female slaves came to £5,100, which researchers say is equal to around £500,000 ($782,000) today.

amount of money involved,” said Kathryn McKee, a li-brarian at the college who acquired the papers. “Many anti-slavery campaigns were grassroots efforts by ordinary people, while the pro-slavery lobby had significant wealth and influence they could use to exert pressure on parlia-ment.”

The abolitionists even-tually won after a 20-year struggle when Britain passed the 1807 bill to abolish the slave trade.

Images of some of the letters and papers will be available online to re-searchers and the public as part of a collection of anti-slavery material.

R By Danica KirkaVETERANS wearing medals, some in wheelchairs festooned with the Union flag, paraded through central London August 15 to mark the 70th anniversary of the victory over Japan and the end of World War II.

The slow walkabout by the aging veterans recalled the pain and ultimate triumph of Britain’s 4-1/2-year campaign in Asia. One twirled his cane. Oth-ers waved. Many saluted. Thousands cheered them on.

The moving moment marked the end of a day of ceremony and remembrance. The Queen led the nation’s commemo-ration, attending a morning service at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, near London’s Trafalgar Square.

Some in the audience wore medals earned by their fathers and grandfathers – a proud show of remembrance from some who feel the war in Asia was largely overlooked by a country that focused on the struggle against Nazi Germany.

“I think it’s very important to the veterans because they feel that they’ve been treated as the forgotten army,” said Pauline Simpson, one of the organizers. “Their comrades that fought in Europe came home in May 1945 and they came back to a huge welcome and celebration.

was the end of the war. But in actual fact for all of the men still in the Far East in captivity, many of them didn’t even know that the war had ended. And they didn’t start returning home until three or four months later.”

Classic British hymns such as Abide

WELL, IT’S been quite a summer. The weather has played its usual infuriat-

ing part, always vaguely hinting that this will be the hit summer we’ve all been waiting for since 1976. And always failing to deliver.

Take July, for instance. On the first day, parts of Britain recorded their hottest-ever temperatures, up into the high 30s Centi-grade. Summer had surely arrived but then on the 31st, we suffered record low night-time figures, almost bloody freezing. In between, the weather went up and down like the pro-verbial fiddler’s elbow.

Not that it affected the cricket. Rain never prevented play to save the Aussies from defeat and Alastair Cook and his merry men wrested back the Ashes to great and universal rejoicing.

Sport in fact enjoyed many happy hours. Andy Murray nearly won Wimbledon. In fact he probably would have done most years if Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic hadn’t been playing. We came home with a shed load of gold medals from the World Swim-ming Championships in Moscow, mainly thanks to a gangly lad from Uttoxeter called Adam Peaty. And we stuffed the French where it hurt with Chris Froome winning the Tour de France.

LESSBut one place where the sun hasn’t

shone, where summer has not penetrated, where the joy has been less than absolute is in the Labour Party’s leadership campaign.

Struggling for breath after the totally unex-pected May election defeat, coupled with a virtual wipe-out in Scotland, the party has been choosing a successor to Ed Miliband who disap-peared off the face of the earth after his General Election defeat.

His resignation precipitated a leadership battle at just the wrong time for his party when quiet reflection rather than bitter infighting was what was required. Labour needed time to analyse why things had gone so badly wrong. It was the time for sensible evaluation and an orderly change-over. An opportunity but one that was completely wasted.

Labour subjected itself to a campaign that started in May and was destined to drag on five months to mid-September, a catastrophic misjudgement which delighted their Conser-vative opponents, now able to wallow both in the pleasure of their victory and the misery of Labour in defeat.

YOUNGISHThree youngish contenders put their hands

up: Yvette Cooper (married to the defeated Ed Balls), Andy Burnham (a plausible Mersey-side MP) and Liz Kendall (a pretty right-wing candidate – no comma there). A fourth sup-

Corbyn’s Success Spoils Even A Poor Summer For Labour

plicant for the top job was the veteran, red-hot socialist Jeremy Corbyn, a 66-year-old with thirty years as a backbencher..

To get on the voting paper, the candidates needed 35 proposers among Labour MPs. As the deadline for the completion of the application process approached, Corbyn was still two votes short but help at the fifty-ninth minute of the eleventh hour was at hand as first Margaret Becket and then Oxford’s Andrew Smith added their names to Corbyn’s 33.

Both made it plain that they had no inten-tion of voting for Corbyn in the leadership election. Both also stated that they felt that his name needed to be there to allow a wider-ranging discussion of issues to include matters of a red-hot socialist nature. In passing, one might observe that it takes a bit of a dimwit to sign the election papers of a person you have no intention of voting for and whose opinions differ entirely from yours.

SUITABLENow I am not for one minute suggesting

that Becket and Smith are dim. Faced with two young women and a man, any of whom would be eminently suitable for the job of leading Labour to the next election, any one of us would surely be sensible enough to give an old hand the opportunity to cause an electoral upset.

For an electoral upset is exactly what seems to be happening now as Corbyn’s ratings in the opinion polls suggest he has

exceeded 53 percent: a victory on the first ballot.

In order to widen the range of voters for the Labour leader, the party decided last year that anyone who stumped up three quid would be entitled to vote. Anyone. Whatever their party or political preferences.

Now it doesn’t take a person who can see through brick walls to see what was going to happen next. Anyone with half a brain, and I include Becket and Smith in that definition, could see that if you were a mischief-maker who wanted to ensure the disappearance of Labour as a political force, you could pay your three pounds and then vote for the candidate least likely to get any votes,

OK, then look back again at the four people up for the job. Which of those would get your vote?

RUNAWAYAnd so it comes to pass that as summer

turns to autumn, the runaway leader in the Labour poll is Jeremy Corbyn. Since the elec-tion, 282,000 people have signed up to vote for a new leader with Corbyn enjoying a hefty lead. The grizzled old parliamentarian has been in the House of Commons since time immemorial without making any impression yet suddenly he is the man to beat.

The whole process looks decidedly dodgy and you might think the sensible thing to do would be to scrap the election.

The trouble is that this is the first try-out of the voting system and to abandon it in

mid-stream with thousands of people having already paid three quid for a chance to de-stroy Labour, it wouldn’t look good. Imagine the glee on the faces of their political oppo-nents, many prepared to vote for the party’s destruction if Labour cancels this election.

You can already hear them, “Can you trust this lot to run the country when they can’t even run their own party?”

And so Labour is condemned to run its race which many fear will be won by the weakest contestant. All will be revealed on September 12 at a special conference.

Tony Blair, wisely, has kept his opinions to himself in recent years, yet even he has gone public to proclaim the folly of elevating Corbyn to the Labour leadership. He warns that Labour faces political annihilation if members vote in Jeremy Corbyn.

And he’s probably right. In many striking ways Corbyn is the UK’s political equivalent of Bernie Sanders and you know he isn’t going to succeed Barack Obama.

Banker Who Hit Man In Face With Glass In Night Club Spared Jail Because Of His Job

Barclays Reports Sevenfold Increase In Profits

EDWARD DREW threw a glass and cut another man’s face on the dance floor of a club last month, but avoided jail due to the judge’s concern that it would ruin his career.

Drew, 25, threw the glass towards Hanish Lodhia’s face at Moorgate’s The Gable bar, following a dispute with the victim’s friend Kirsten Barker in March.

The confrontation had erupted when she poured a drink over him because he spilled one close to her while dancing with a female friend.

After pushing Barker to the floor, he got into it with Lodhia, who suffered a bloody cut to his forehead when the object hit him.

Another clubber Juliette Keyte was cut in the throat after being hit by a piece of glass.

Despite this, the judge at the Old Bailey felt a custodial sentence was not

appropriate.STRUGGLED

“I’ve struggled with the conflicting pulls of an immediate custodial sentence for an attack of this kind and I’ve bal-anced against that the probably ruinous effect on the career of someone such as yourself,” said Recorder Jonathan Cohen.

Privately educated Drew, from Wans-dworth, will now reportedly get to keep his job at investment company M&G, located in the City, because he did not go to jail.

Drew was ordered to pay £460 com-pensation to Lodhia for his blood soaked clothes, prosecution costs of £1,000, and a £100 victim surcharge. He will also have to complete a rehabilitation course and 100 hours of community service.

Drew wept as he was given a two-year suspended sentence at the Old Bailey over the vicious incident.

NOVELS BY Americans Anne Tyler and Marilynne Robinson are among 13 contenders for the £50,000 Booker Prize for fiction.

The list, chosen from 156 entries and announced last month, includes A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James, the first Jamaica-born Booker contender.

Also selected are Ireland’s Anne Enright for The Green Road and British writer Andrew O’Hagan’s The Illuminations.

Two years ago, writers of all nationalities became eligible for the Booker, previously open only to British, Irish and Commonwealth authors.

Five American novels are on the list: Tyler’s A Spool of Blue Thread, Robinson’s Lila, Bill Clegg’s Did You Ever Have a Family, Laila Lalami’s The Moor’s Account and Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life.

Six finalists will be announced September 15 and the winner re-vealed October 13.

BARCLAYS, Britain’s second largest bank, said last month that second quarter profit increased sevenfold, boosted by earnings from investment banking and a £496m gain on as-sets acquired from Lehman Brothers in 2008.

Net income rose to £1.15bn in the quarter ended June 30, from £161m in the year-earlier period.

The report was the first since John McFar-lane took over as executive chairman and fired CEO Antony Jenkins after concluding Jenkins wasn’t moving fast enough to cut costs and improve earnings.

While Barclays is performing well, “there is more that can be done to deliver better returns for shareholders, faster,” McFarlane said last month.

“Barclays appears eager to press ahead with the increased pace of restructuring,” said Richard Hunter, an analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers.

“The legacy and fresh provisions for past misdemeanors remain a drag on overall perfor-mance, as Barclays attempts once and for all to consign those issues to history,” Hunter said.

AS KEN and Tracy struggle to cope in the aftermath of Deirdre’s death, Tracy’s ex-husband Robert Preston lends a helping hand. At No 1 Coronation Street, Robert cooks Deirdre’s signature dish of stuffed mar-row for the grieving Barlows. He also stays overnight with Tracy until she found out that Robert has a wife called Joni. It’s fair to say that Tracy is not best pleased.

Gail tries, and fails, to get Michael back. She pretends she’s got a leak in the kitchen and calls Michael who goes round to fix it. While he’s there she gives him Battenberg cake. He doesn’t eat it all and she wraps the remainder in foil which he takes to the pub so Eileen can bash it all over the table! Gail makes a final play to get Michael back but he spends the night with Eileen instead. How-ever, Michael soon starts to see a different side to Eileen and is disappointed that she’s not as honest as she looks. Michael’s further displeased with Eileen for rubbing Gail’s nose in things and flaunting their relationship in the Rovers. Michael tells Eileen sternly to leave Gail alone: “I don’t want you thinking about Gail when you’re kissing me!”

Tony returns this week but no-one wants to see him – not his son Jason, not his ex-Tracy and not his ex-Liz. Liz does grant him an audience in the back room of the pub where she ends up pummeling him and slapping him for his dirty dog ways. A brilliant scene – and Bev Callard as Liz has been on fire this month, she’s always a joy to watch.

Over at the garage, Kev gets an offer he can’t refuse when a fella he knows offers to sell him his garage. Kev’s all suited and booted as he makes his way to business meetings and the bank and Sally’s impressed.

It doesn’t take much to turn Sally’s head, un-fortunately for Tim, who notices what’s going on. Deciding he doesn’t want to lose Sally to Kev, Tim proposes to Sally and in some style too. Well, I say style. It all depends if you like ‘Take That’ blaring out of a ghetto blaster and being proposed to by a fella with a bunch of Dev’s flowers in his hand while he’s kneeling on the cobbles in front of a knicker-stitching factory. But it’s a style Sally likes and she says “yes”.

Roy’s new friend Cathy gets trapped by a falling mountain of rubbish she’s hoarded in her house. Roy knows it’s not safe for her to stay there any more and he takes her to a museum for the day where the two of them join an art class and draw pictures of each other. While they’re out of the house, Tyrone, Fiz and Chesney tidy up Cathy’s house to reveal a sofa, a carpet and a panic attack from Cathy when she returns to see what they’ve done. She’s too scared to stay in the house on her own as it brings too many memories of how she’s let things go since her husband died. Roy asks her to move into the flat above the café with him while Carla’s away. It’s a safe haven for wounded souls, and Cathy accepts. I have a feeling that Hayley would approve.

In the factory, Alya thinks she might be pregnant after her one-night stand with Jason. Oblivious to all the turmoil going on in Alya’s head, Gary plans their wedding with the families Nazir and Windass. When asked who he’d want to invite to their small wed-ding, Gary reels off a list of names, none of them being Eddie, his dad. How odd.

THE PRODUCERS and writers of EastEnders sure do make things tough for recappers! I’ve got a limited amount of space (about 700 words) and there is just too, too much great stuff to include it all. EastEnders is back bay-bee! It is once again at the top of its game!…

Ever since Kathy Beale turned up during 30th Anniversary week there’s been little drip, drip, drips of hints. Now she’s back in a big way, turning up at the Arches, asking Phil for money. She faked her death, we still don’t know why, and she knows she’ll go to jail when the ruse is discovered, but she wants to come back and do the time, and then just be home. But it can’t be that simple, can it? Her sons have mourned her for over nine years and they still don’t know that she’s really alive. Meanwhile Phil is getting texts from a mysterious ‘K’ and Sharon suspects he’s up to something (usually a safe guess with Phil)…

Elsewhere, Shabnam and Kush didn’t waste any time: She’s pregnant well in advance of the wedding. Coincidentally, Stacey is pregnant as well, but doesn’t quite know if it’s Martin’s or Kush’s…Libby came home from Oxford to visit Denise but left without telling the secret she’s hiding… Abi is still with Ben, not knowing that he has been with Paul. We expect she’ll go full on Fatal Attraction when she finds out. And speaking of finding out, Les Coker’s dirty little affair with Claudette has been exposed and Pam, as you can imagine, is none too pleased… And speaking of none too pleased: Roxy is dating Dean the rapist and Ronnie ain’t happy. And we know what happens when Ronnie ain’t happy. Will potential serial killer Ronnie be the one to finally give Dean a dose of the karma he so richly deserves?…

Across the Square, everything is falling apart at Chez Beale. Every week it seems, someone else finds out that it was really Bobby that killed Lucy but as of this moment,

they are all still keeping shtum. The secret was dormant for a while, but then the Old Bill turned up and started making arrests, seemingly false arrests, and even though Ian & Jane know it was Bad Seed Bobby, they are willing to let anyone go through a trial to protect him, and with each question, each arrest, Jane is getting more and more eaten up inside. She is tortured. Right now Max is in jail, getting beat up and everyone has turned against him. But he’s got a new secret weapon at his side: Marcus Christie!… and I’ve got my own theory. I don’t think it really was Bobby. All we have is Jane’s word on that. I think it was actually Jane that killed Lucy! Doof-doof…

Why You May Wish You Were A Company!ONE EXPLANATION I hear often from tax-payers about why they have not included UK-source income on their US tax return is that the money has remained in the United Kingdom rather than being brought here. All my regular readers (both of them!) will know this isn’t an argument the IRS will look on favourably. It makes no difference if the income is in a bank account in your name in Birmingham, Alabama or Birmingham in the Midlands, the relevant point is that the income is yours. As a US resident you are taxable on worldwide income, so your UK income should be included.

The current position of US companies holding vast amounts of money outside the US and not being taxable on it unless and until they bring it into the United States, does muddy the waters somewhat! The publicity (not generally positive) given to this state of affairs could result in people thinking the same rules applied to them. I don’t believe the IRS would give anyone a waiver for thinking this, but it is just one example of how corporations are treated much better than individuals by the tax system in both countries.

The expectation (certainly for Starbucks, Apple and the other companies holding large cash sums outside the US) is that, rather than pay the full tax due on bringing the cash into the US, there will be an amnesty (which has happened before), so they can bring the funds to the US at reduced tax rates. If this sounds rather different from the treatment handed out to individuals who haven’t included foreign in-come on their US Tax Returns, that’s because

it is – very different! Individual taxpayers can sign up to voluntary disclosure and pay a heavy penalty, whilst corporate taxpayers can wait for a “Get Out of Jail Free” card!

If we’re talking about fairness, this quite plainly isn’t! Not only are multinational cor-porations better-positioned to get tax advice than most individuals, but the whole tax sys-tem is geared to their advantage. Countries and states compete over how quickly new companies can be set up in their jurisdictions, and a large company can have any number of subsidiaries, often some making profits and some making losses. The accounts of these companies can be aggregated for tax return purposes, so the overall profit or loss position is subject to tax.

Not only does it take much longer to create a person than it does to set up a subsidiary, but with very few exceptions, most small people are financially dependent for a long time! A Financial Times columnist used to refer to her sons as “Cost Centres” and parents worldwide will agree with the clas-sification, even though it takes no account of

the undoubted positives to having children.Although it’s not a feminist viewpoint, the

idea of taxing a married couple jointly (as they do here, but not in the UK) makes some allowance to a bigger economic unit than an individual. But it doesn’t allow for households of unmarried people or multi-generational households.

I do sometimes wonder how we have ended up with tax systems in both countries that are so unfriendly to individuals, but friendly to corporations which are, after all, completely a manmade concept. It doesn’t bode well for how we’ll deal with intelligent machines!

But the bottom line, I’m afraid is back where we started – one rule for corpora-tions, but human taxpayers must declare everything!

Mary-Heather Styles is quite sure she’s a human, and hopes that is sufficient proof! She owns, and runs, Transatlantic Tax Inc. in Phoenix, AZ which is quite a change from the gentle rolling hills of Surrey where she grew up. She can be contacted at (602) 845-140 or [email protected].

THREE RELATIVES of the late al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden were among four people killed when a private jet crashed on landing in southern England, British police confirmed last month.

The Saudi ambassador to the United Kingdom confirmed Osama Bin Laden’s stepmother Rajaa Hashim, his sister Sana bin Laden and her husband Zuhair Hashim were all on the plane

Police said the Embraer Phenom 300 executive jet crashed into a parking lot and burst into flames while trying to land at Blackbushe Airport in southern England August 1.

The plane was flying from Malpensa Airport in Milan to the airfield about 40 miles southwest of London, which is used by private planes and flying clubs.

No one on the ground was hurt. Police

Harry plans to visit Washington at the end of October to offer support for the 2016 event, which is being held in Orlando, Florida. Specific dates for the visit will be announced later.

The prince’s office at Kensington Palace also said last month that Harry would visit South Africa again, and Le-sotho from November 26 to December 4.

Official: Iran To Partially Allow BBC To

Report For A Week R By Nasser Karimi

AN IRANIAN government official said last month the Islamic Republic will allow some BBC journalists to report there for a one-week period, loosening restrictions on a news organization often vilified in local media amid signs of warming diplomatic ties to Britain.

The BBC said it had no word from the Iranian government on the decision, though one of its international correspon-dents has said she recently spent a day in Tehran. It also comes as Iran and world powers reached a permanent deal over its contested nuclear program.

Islamic Culture and Guidance Ministry spokesman Hossein Nooshabadi told The Associated Press that a team of BBC journalists will be allowed to report. He said the BBC’s Persian-language service was still banned there.

“The permission is only for one week time for a special report,” based on a BBC World Service request, Nooshabadi said. “The permission for activity and pro-ducing is for the report by the English-language BBC, while observing all laws and regulations” of the country.

EXPELLINGIran stopped the BBC’s Persian

service from operating in the country in 2009, later expelling a World Service journalist during turmoil surrounding its disputed 2009 presidential election. In the time since, Tehran repeatedly has accused the network of security-related offenses. Local media occasionally calls the BBC the “propaganda apparatus of the old fox of colonialism.”

The decision is likely part of attempts to normalize ties with Britain after hard-liners stormed its Tehran embassy and diplomatic sites in 2011. The United King-dom closed its embassy over the attack.

Britain was part of the world powers that helped reach the nuclear deal with Iran in Vienna last month.

Africa on conservation projects, and has been on a private visit to the country’s flagship wildlife park, which is facing heavy pressure from poachers who are killing rhinos in record numbers.

The national parks service said last month that it had provided Harry with “exposure” to its efforts against rhino poaching in Kruger National Park, but said the activities did not include opera-tions against suspected poachers.

The parks service says in a statement emailed to The Associated Press that only rangers and other law enforcement officials are involved in such anti-poach-ing operations.

Kensington Palace said on June 19 that Harry had ended his army career and would spend three months working on “front-line conservation projects” in southern Africa.

Police Confirm 3 Bin Ladens Killed In England Plane Crash

and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch launched a joint investigation.

Andrew Thomas, who was at a car auction sales center based at the airport, told the BBC that “the plane nosedived into the cars and exploded on impact.” He said he saw the plane and several cars in flames.

The bin Laden family disowned Osama in 1994 when Saudi Arabia stripped him of his citizenship because of his militant activities. The al-Qaida leader was killed by US special forces in Pakistan in 2011.

The family is a large and wealthy one. Osama bin Laden’s billionaire father Mo-hammed had more than 50 children and founded the Binladen Group, a sprawl-ing construction conglomerate awarded many major building contracts in the Sunni kingdom.

ONE OF, if not the most important reasons Karen and I write the column for the UJ, is to be able to bring attention to Brits to be proud of, worthy of knowing. Jeremy Davies OBE falls into and excels in this category, not only an exceptionally nice man to know but a leader with outstanding abilities to get things done!

We’ve met Jeremy a few times, most recently at the BritWeek reception. His story goes back to 2011 when Bruce Herron, the then President of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASALA) founded in 1977 by Se-attle Superior Court Judge David Souke, who recognized the need to help foster children. Bruce approached his good friend Jeremy to ask whether he could help CASA in connect-ing with companies and organizations to raise funds for CASA. Jeremy knew Bruce through another charity to which he donates, Harbor Interfaith Services in San Francisco which supports the homeless and working poor.

CUTSWhat gave rise to the request was that the

unexpected consequences of budget cuts resulted in CASA losing its Federal, State and County funding, including losing 14 employ-ees previously provided by the County. At that time CASA was providing volunteers to support about 600 of the 30,000 children that have been removed from their parents by the Dependency Court, the largest population of

foster children in any County in the US. Jeremy told us, “When I was approached

by Bruce I told him that because of my hav-ing been former President and Chairman of the BABC both locally and nationally, being a member of the Board of Governors of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, being Senior Advisor to the VerdeXchange In-stitute and a retired senior Partner of PwC that I felt I could use my contacts to help outreach to the business community.” CASA had been publically funded and so had developed no outreach strategy to corporate America.

Jeremy explains that CASA had to convert to a fully private 501c3 charity and despite the

Jeremy has helped to develop a corporate out-reach program for CASA, which has resulted in a number of new corporate supporters and board members. He also arranged for CASA/LA to be the beneficiary of the 2013 LA Auto Show’s charity preview night and serves on the Committee for the Evening to Foster Dreams Annual Gala, which has helped raise CASA’s profile within the community as well as raising millions in much needed funding. Their last Annual GALA in May had Jay Leno as host, (he has committed to be host next year as well. Some 850 people from busi-ness, the entertainment industry, the political leadership, and other LA leaders were present at the Beverly Hilton Hotel

Jeremy told us: “During my time over the past few years working with the organization, the challenges facing CASA have become apparent. One of the primary needs remains to market CASA’s cause and needs to the corporate world. These children face horrible circumstances, and what amounts to a small gift for a large corporate entity can provide life-changing funding that helps CASA advocates provide guidance and help.”

I’d like to bring more help from our com-munity, not only by engaging British leaders in business but also to enlist more volunteers,” continued Davies. “While we maintain a very healthy identity and keep our roots intact, we still need to embrace the issues that face adopted home, and this is one of the most vital.

LA hosts the highest number of foster youth in the entire country, over 28,000 kids.

For those interested in volunteering with CASA of LA, more information can be found at www.casala.org. For businesses that would be interested in discussing ways to support CASA programs, or in the Evening to Foster Dreams Gala event, Mr Davies can be reach at [email protected] Jeremy Davies received an OBE for Services to British business interest in the USA from Prince Charles in 2014.

Our thanks to Gillian Campbell who re-minded us to give Jeremy the recognition he so richly deserves, and her help in the research.

JAMES CORDONHave you tuned into CBS The Late Late

Show yet starring James Cordon from High Wycombe. It’s becoming very very popular. What we really like about him is his constant loyalty to British artists, introducing one bunch of lovely ladies last month called Little Mix also from High Wycombe. They made their debut on the XFactor and signed with Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Music. Their release of the album DNA charted in the top five of eight countries, including number two in the UK, making Little Mix the first girl group since The Pussycat Dolls to reach the US top five with their debut album, as well as earning the highest debut US chart position by a British girl group, breaking the record previously held by the Spice Girls who debuted at number five. Well done ladies. You are delightful to watch and listen to!!

HEAVY downpours caused a huge 40ft deep crater to appear on the Mancunian Way in Manchester last month.

The sinkhole measuring 15ft wide caused traffic chaos ever since.

Now there are fears the road could be shut for weeks.

The carriageway collapsed on a stretch between the junctions with the A6 London Road and Fairfield Street.

Manchester council engineers and United Utilities were called to the scene to assess the damage.

It’s believed that the hole was caused either by a collapsed sewer or culvert.

A workman at the scene said: “There are concerns it could spread to the other side and I see both directions be-ing closed for weeks while repair work takes place.”

The two girls, from St Austell, Corn-wall, were, last month, celebrating after receiving the same A-Level results – meaning that they’ll now study the same course together at the same university.

RECENTLY I was out with fellow Brit Club friends at a local restaurant, and had their featured garlic soup. It was very good, but I recalled my own version of a garlic soup, that was a favourite in the tea room. On one of my trips to the UK many years ago, I discovered some cook books out by WH Smiths that had some really good recipes, in fact the one I base this month’s recipe on. It had spinach cooked in it too – although very good – I tweaked it to make the soup without it, and also included sug-gestions from an old friend’s recipe. The WH Smiths recipe also included parmesan dumplings, which are yummy really for any soup, so I thought I would include that also this month.

Garlic has been used for centuries, originally a native of Asia – currently, China produces the most – and has long been the staple for many Mediterranean dishes, and then into the rest of Europe. It has been known and used since ancient times, not so much as a food at first, but mostly for medicinal uses … including Socrates us-ing it a lot. Garlic was found in the Egyptian Pyramids, and ancient Greek temples, and there are several biblical references to garlic. It was brought to Britain in the 1500’s, and cultivated there, still is mainly in the Isle of Wight. It is a relative of the onion, shallots, leek, chives and lily family.

It really wasn’t used much in the US until the early 1900’s, but today Americans alone apparently consume more than 250 million pounds of garlic annually! Nowadays it is considered very good for several health reasons especially for car-diac health … and of course we know how well it protects us from those vampires!!!

When cooking garlic, it needs to be

slow and low heat … if too hot it can eas-ily get bitter, one of my favourite ways to cook it is in the oven, whole, and then just squeeze out the cooked garlic … good for bread, mashed potatoes etc.

Garlic Soup (and Parmesan Dumplings)

5 Tbsp olive oil3 whole heads of garlic, peeled.1/2 cup sliced onions2-3 potatoes, peeled and diced2 bay leaves1 thyme sprig3 cups chicken or vegetable stock2/3 cup dry white wineSalt & pepper to taste2 cups milkHeat the oil in a heavy saucepan. Add

the garlic and onions and cook over a low heat for a few minutes until soft but not coloured. Cover with a tight fitting lid, and cook over a low heat about 30-40 minutes until soft, check frequently it doesn’t cook on too high a heat. Add the potatoes, bay leaves, thyme, stock, wine, milk and seasoning, raise the heat and simmer for about 20-30 minutes. Remove the bay leaves Cool slightly and then puree in a processor in batches until smooth and creamy. 4-6- servings.

Parmesan Dumplings3/4 cup ricotta cheese1 Tbsp softened butter2 Tbsp grated Parmesan cheese1 tsp grated lemon peel2 Tbsp flour, plus extra for dusting2 beat egg yolksSalt & pepper (white)Freshly grated nutmegPlace all ingredients in a bowl, and mix

to form a firm paste. Season to taste with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Cover and chill in refrigerator for up to an hour. With lightly floured hands, form the mixture into 24 small balls, roll in flour, and place on tray. Bring small pan of lightly salted water to the boil, and drop in the dumplings, cook 4-5- minutes, and drain well. Serve in the hot soup

Pan Am 103*Heathrow to Lockerbie * 21st December 1988

by Paddy CarpenterTHIS IS A novel set in the world of film mak-ing. It revolves on the basis of the screenplay that Ray Scriver has finally com-p l e t ed abou t the Lockerbie bombing. A l-though it is fic-tion Mr Carpen-ter has obviously s p e n t m a n y hours gather-ing background information on Lockerbie.

We start out with Ray on the way to the airport. He has finally finished the screenplay and has set up meetings in Los Angeles and Australia to present it. We get some back-ground on his current marital situation- not good – and begin to get some insight into this thinking on the movie. Ray has been in the motion picture business for many years and has a lot of friends, former co-workers in the field. It’s funny how friendships can grow over a relatively short time when working on a film. You may be with these people for a few weeks, for a few months, but they become family and you seem to always keep a core few for lifelong friends – almost like college roommates. Ray meets up with some of these folks in Los Angeles, a place he’s been before, and has a good time reminiscing and also has a few very promising meetings with Producer’s and Directors. There are sugges-tions made for the script and who should play who, and who should direct, etc etc. Ray takes it all in and then flies off to Australia to meet with another friend who has been in the hospital for a while. This visit also goes well and really brightens up his friend.

While in Australia Ray does some flying of his own and meets up with a former flame who also puts him in touch with an investiga-tor who has information on Lockerbie – who was there – and what his suspicions are. The investigator is hesitant to meet Ray but does so, very secretively – we later find out why.

Ray crosses back and forth, gets some great input and some horrible input from people about the script. Everyone wants to take care of their peeps and this doesn’t necessarily means sticking to the story but Ray is adamant that if this is going to be made into a movie it has to stay true to what he has written.

As he gets further into meetings and research he begins to feel that someone is following him – perhaps he’s getting too close to certain things. The investigator tells him be careful – there are things that the US authori-ties as well as the UK don’t want anyone to know. Why is it that the FBI “just happened” to be only a few minutes from the crash site when the plane went down? Why did they take some of the baggage away and not let anyone see it after the crash? Who exactly was there? Who was on the plane? Were there drugs involved? Were there suitcases of money taken away? Lots of questions and not a lot of answers.

The novel is set in the UK, California, New Zealand and Australia but also brings in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. The amount of detail is mind boggling. I really wasn’t sure where the storytelling and the facts crossed over. If you are interested in espionage, politics, the Middle East or conspiracy theory then this book is for you. I have to say that I wish it would have kept more on point, it seems to wander off quite a bit. The meat of the story was very well written and quite interesting.

It will give an insight into how the motion picture business works – certainly not the way the average person thinks it does – and not what all the schools teach you either.

There is a lot of history covered – Middle East to UK to US and how they have and have not worked together on various things over the years.

As I said, all in all I would say it was a good read. If you are interested in aviation, politics, Lockerbie, distrust government or just a good story then go for it!

AN INSTITUTION IN THE MAKING

English Pork Pie Company Now To Be Known As ParkersYOU MAY know The English Pork Pie Company for making pork pies, but over the past 12 months the company has grown and introduced several new and diverse products.

The company, owners Damian and Vicky Parker, felt that it was time for a change, and so they launched a rebrand and the company is now known as “Parker’s”.

Due to the demand for the fin-est of British cuisine in the United States, the company has broadened their range of proper British food, to provide the most authentic British experience outside of the UK. A lot has happened in the past year, the pair have created Parker’s Proper Fish and Chips shop chain as well as a brand new online shopping experi-ence to exceed customers’ every expectation.

QUALITYProducts are baked fresh to order

using the highest quality seasonings and dry ingredients from the UK and local organic or all natural produce and meats. But, regular customers need not worry; Parker’s will be sticking with the English Pork Pie Company’s roots of exceptional qual-ity, and authenticity, while working with local farmers and keeping prod-uct at a reasonable price.

If this wasn’t enough, The Parker family has created an eight-acre British campus in New York which they aim to be a training facility and their central distribution place for future outlets.

If you live in the area, you can visit their campus to see their interna-tional sized soccer and rugby field, the campus’ first proper fish and chips shop, or watch a match in the Pitch Bar overlooking the campus soccer pitch.

Parker’s is becoming a great Brit-ish institution here in the US.

Evidence Of Infidelities Spreads Online In Wake Of Hack

R By Raphael SatterHUSBANDS and wives across the world are being confronted with their partners’ extramarital affairs after a catastrophic leak at adultery website Ashley Madison spewed electronic evidence of infidelity across the Internet worldwide.

Online forums were buzzing last month with users claiming to have found evidence that their significant others were on the dating site. In Britain and Israel, parliamentarians have been put on the defensive after their email addresses were identified in the trove. And in Aus-tralia, one woman appeared to learn – live on air – that her husband’s details were registered with the site.

Family law experts are divided on the likely offline impact of the leak, but Los Angeles-based divorce lawyer Steve Mindel predicted an uptick in business for him and his colleagues.

“We’re all saying: `It’s going to be Christmas in September,”‘ Mindel said. “Pretty soon all of this stuff is going to surface and there’s going to be a lot of filings for divorce directly as a result of this.”

CHEATINGAshley Madison marketed itself as

the premier venue for cheating spouses before data stolen by hackers started spreading across the Internet last month.

The prospect of finding the name of a loved one or an acquaintance amid the site’s more than 35 million registered members has drawn strong interest worldwide.

Websites devoted to checking emails against the leaked data appeared to be experiencing heavy traffic. Forums such as Reddit – the user-powered news and discussion site – carried stories of an-guished husbands and wives confronting their partners after finding their data among the massive dump of information.

When the hosts of a morning show in Sydney, Australia, asked listeners to phone in if they wanted their spouse’s details run through the database, a woman called saying she was suspicious because her husband had been acting strangely since the news of the leak broke. The hosts plugged his details into a website and said they found a match.

“Are you serious? Are you freaking kidding me?” the woman asked, her voice shaking. “These websites are disgust-

ing.” She then hung up.The emotional punch of the

Ashley Madison leak puts it in a separate category than the parade of recent data breaches, said Edu-ardo Ustaran, a data protection and privacy lawyer with Hogan Lovells in London.

“Passwords can be changed and credit cards replaced,” he said in an

email. “But the Ashley Madison breach is different because it threatens to destroy lives and families.”

It could also threaten political careers.Journalists are combing through the

data, looking for the names of celebrities, top officials or religious leaders. Their task has been complicated by the fact that many of the profiles were tied to fake or borrowed email addresses, which users did not necessarily have to validate.

In Britain, Scottish lawmaker Michelle Thomson said an obsolete email address had been “harvested by hackers” and used to register an account with the site.

KEEN TO bring even more of us beloved Brits over here, the state’s official market-ing agency VisitFlorida, have sponsored an English football team. True. Not as nutty as it seems. Effective last month second divi-sion Fulham Football Club’s white jerseys are now stamped with the blue VisitFlorida logo. Fulham FC is owned by Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid “Shad” Khan. Khan’s Jaguars played the Dallas Cowboys Novem-ber 2014 in London.

“I love Fulham and I love Florida, so naturally it brings me a lot of satisfaction to see two of my personal passions become one,” said Khan. “VisitFlorida has a great tourism and leisure story to tell in the competitive London and UK market and they can emphasise all Florida has to offer through the power and following of Fulham Football Club.” In addition to home and away shirts, VisitFlorida’s name will be featured atop the roof of the club’s stadium, Craven Cottage, which is under a landing approach to London’s Heathrow Airport.

Paul Phipps, Visit Florida’s chief market-ing officer, said “It’s a one year deal in the high six-figures, expected to generate a $3 return in Florida for each $1 spent.” Pushing the number of British tourists from the 1.6 million recorded last year to 1.7 million or 1.8 million could be worth up to $200m to Florida, he said. Also Florida Governor Rick Scott long-stated goal is to make Florida the destination of 100 million visitors a year and he has long had his eye on England as an obvious part of that. Phipps said the state agency looked at other clubs, such as Manchester United, but sponsorship there runs as high as $40m, so the return from a high-profile top-division team wasn’t worth the cost.

Remember readers, every resident tax-paying Florida Brit like you started off as a tourist.

n Prince Harry is bringing his Invictus Games to Orlando next year, he just an-nounced. He is the Patron and UK founder of this sporting event for injured military members and more than 400 competitors from the UK and USA are expected to com-pete in 10 sports – archery, cycling, indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field, triathlon and wheelchair versions of basketball, rugby and tennis. It will take place at Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in May 2016. The first Invictus Games were held in London in 2014 and more than 10 million watched on BBC. “I can’t wait to see the American public sup-porting these inspirational men and women at the 2016 Games,” Prince Harry said. “And what better place to host such a great family event than Orlando.” (Yes, pucker up single females of Florida – he’s still eligible!) Their website www.yeomans-caskandlion.com is plastered with British paraphernalia and the menu lists “Churchill Crisps” and “Union Jack Nachos.” Trouble is nachos are Mexican so giving them a British name won’t change that. Pope Holds Sign Calling For Dialogue On Disputed FalklandsPOPE FRANCIS raised eyebrows in his homeland of Argentina, August 19. after being photographed in Rome holding a sign advocating for dialogue over the disputed Falkland Islands.

After his general audience appearance last month, several news agencies shot pictures of Francis holding a sign that read: “It’s time for dialogue between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands.”

It wasn’t immediately clear if Francis was simply politely holding a sign that was handed to him by fellow Argentines or if he was purposely wading into the dispute.

While archbishop of Buenos Aires, the Rev Jorge Bergoglio, as he was known

then, sometimes spoke in nationalistic terms about the islands. Since becom-ing pope in 2013, however, Francis has refrained from talking about the dispute.

Soon after the photo began to show up on local websites, Argentina’s foreign min-istry tweeted that the pope “had received a pro-dialogue message” for Argentina and Britain.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez also tweeted a few of the photos to her nearly four million followers with the hashtag “MalvinasArgentinas”, referring to the islands’ Spanish name. In 2013,

Fernandez formally asked the pope to in-tervene in the dispute, though he never has.

The Argentine army seized the islands in 1982 only to be defeated by a British force, but Argentina still claims sover-eignty over the South Atlantic territory.

The issue always strikes a nerve in this country of 41 million people. But Britain has repeatedly said the question of sovereignty has been decided. In a 2013 referendum, the vast majority of Falkland residents voted to remain a British territo-ry. According to a 2012 census, the islands have a population of about 2,563 people.

Probe Seeks Apology To Survivors Of Sex Abuse In Scotland

AN INDEPENDENT commission is urging the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland to offer an unequivocal apology to victims of sex abuse.

The inquiry was set up in 2013 fol-lowing a series of scandals. Disgraced Cardinal Keith O’Brien stepped down in February 2013 after three priests and a former priest made allegations of inap-propriate behavior.

The commission described support for survivors August 18 as an “abso-lute priority,” and recommended that the church’s safeguarding policies and practices be completely rewritten and subjected to external scrutiny.

The investigation’s chair, Very Rev Andrew McLellan, described the report as “a chance – an unrepeatable chance – to make things better.”

R By Jill LawlessNINE YEARS after former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko drank radioactive tea at a London hotel, an inquiry into his death ended last month with his widow claiming President Vladimir Putin or-dered the killing – and Moscow accusing Britain of politicizing the probe.

Litvinenko, who fled to London in 2000 and became a fierce critic of Putin, died three weeks after drinking tea laced with radioactive polonim-210. On his deathbed, he accused Putin of order-ing his assassination – a claim Moscow denies.

His death continues to be an irritant in worsening relations between the two countries. And despite a six-month inquiry that heard from 62 witnesses, putting anyone on trial for the killing remains a remote prospect.

Outside London’s Royal Courts of Jus-tice, Marina Litvinenko said the inquiry had revealed that “my husband was killed by agents of the Russian state ... and this could not have happened without the knowledge and consent of Mr Putin.”

Her lawyer, Ben Emmerson, called Putin a “tin-pot dictator” who had ordered the “liquidation” of an enemy.

British police have accused Dmitry

Kovtun and Andrei Lugovoi – the two Russians Litvinenko met for tea – of carrying out the killing, sponsored by elements in the Kremlin. Both deny involvement, and Moscow refuses to extradite them.

Personal appearances of local celebri-ties from In the Manor of Speaking to open the Festival.

The Ladies of the DBE are currently making Christmas crackers and cakes, jams, jellies, and hampers laden with goodies. They are collecting trinkets and treasures, silent auction items, lucky dips, dog treats and Christmas trees for the many stands that are synonymous with the Festival. Many of these items are collected throughout the year on trips back to the UK.

ENTERTAINMENTThe fantastic entertainment program

will include the Houston Highlander Pipe Band, the Royal Scottish Dancers, the St Thomas Episcopal School Highland Dancers, a vintage car show, children’s entertainers and much more.

The Best Of British Festival is a won-derful reminder of quintessential British culture; a glorious part of this culture can be found in the tearoom and the pub. It is an opportunity for the DBE to give back to the gracious American community which has been so welcoming to British emigrants.

Proceeds from this year will go to Mountbatten House and other local charities.

The Festival takes place from 10am-4pm, Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1 Fluor Daniel Drive, Sugar Land, TX 77478. Entrance $5 for 12 years and over.

R By Danica Kirka GEORGE COLE, 90, the British actor best known for playing conman Arthur Daley on the long-running TV series Minder, has died.

Cole’s career spanned more than 70 years from his first stage appearance in 1939 and included more than 40 films, including Cleopatra, with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. From 1979-1994 he starred as cigar-smoking, Jaguar-driving Arthur Daley on ITV’s Minder.

Set in London’s criminal underworld, Minder followed the adventures of a small-time crook always on the lookout for his next dodgy deal. Cole’s shifty but ambitious character captured the money-conscious spirit of Britain in the 1980s, and he was twice nominated for best ac-tor by the British Academy of Film and Television.

ILLNESSCole was surrounded by his fam-

ily when he died August 5 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital after a short illness, said agent Derek Webster, who represents Cole’s Minder co-star Dennis Waterman.

Born in south London, Cole started working when he was 14, appearing in the chorus of White Horse Inn in 1939. He starred with Alastair Sim in the 1941 film Cottage to Let, in which he played a resourceful evacuee from wartime London who unmasks a spy. Sim, an older actor with an established career, took him under

SIR PETER O’SULLEVAN, 97, former BBC racing commentator – dubbed the “Voice of Racing” – has died at home in London after a long illness.

An icon in the sport, he commentated on 50 Grand Nationals and around 14,000 races before retiring in 1997.

Born in County Kerry in the Republic of Ireland, he was the BBC’s main racing commentator for half a century.

In 1997, he set up a charitable trust which has since raised huge amounts for animal and racing-related charities.

Nigel Payne, chief executive of that charitable trust, said: “Sir Peter died very peacefully, at home.

“Sir Peter was one of the greatest men I’ve ever known.

“Only last week he was talking about what he wanted me to do for the trust in the future. He was still very alert. It’s a sad day.”

Spectators at Goodwood included five-time champion jockey Willie Carson, a former colleague of O’Sullevan, who told Channel 4 Racing: “It’s very sad to think he’s no longer here except on on our old videos.I always remember in the days when racing was on the evening news, they’d show the last furlong of the Clas-sics. You’d switch the TV on and it would be Peter giving the commentary. You’d be listening to Sir Peter’s dulcet, velvet tones giving the commentary. It was lovely. He was ‘Mr Horseracing”.

Nick Rust, chief executive of the Brit-ish Horseracing Authority, said: “Today is a sad day for British racing. Many

On The Buses Actor Stephen

Lewis Dies At 88ACTOR STEPHEN LEWIS, known for his role in sitcom On The Buses, has died aged 88, his family said.

The star died peacefully at Au-gust 12 in the Cambridge Nurs-ing Home, in Wanstead, east London.

He was “in high spir i ts” right until the end, his niece Rebecca Lewis said, adding that he had been in the care home for around three years.

“He was always singing and jok-ing,” she said.

Lewis, born in Poplar in east London, played Inspector Cyril “Blakey” Blake in On the Buses, and also starred in Last of the Sum-mer Wine.

Rashid Ebrahimkhan, manager of Cambridge Nursing Home, said Lewis would still deliver his famous lines from On The Buses – “I’ll get you for this Butler” and “Get these buses out Butler”.

Mr Ebrahimkhan added: “He was very resilient until the last.”

generations of rac-ing fans will trace their love of racing back to Sir Peter’s unmistakeable com-mentaries. “He had an innate ability to capture the thrills of our sport, managing

as he did to enhance and often define our iconic races.”

Respected Ladbrokes PR man Mike Dil-lon was a long-time friend of O’Sullevan.

He said: “I’m proud to say that although it was initially in a professional capacity, I became a very close friend of his. We shared some tremendous family celebra-tions and nobody loved a party more than Peter. With alarming regularity he used to see off people half his age at lunches and I found very early on that when you went for lunch with him, you knew it would go to extra time and penalties!

“He’s raised of £4m and it was one of the proudest days of my life when he asked me if I would become a trustee of the charity. It’s the 19th year and typically of Sir Peter, he decided very early in the year that AP McCoy would receive a special merit award – this was long before AP announced he was going to retire.

Tony Hall, director general of the BBC, said: “For half a century Sir Peter was the voice of horse racing on the BBC. He was a wonderfully talented commentator whose passion and deep knowledge of racing came through in every broadcast he made. He will be much missed.”

his wing and the pair appeared together in several films, including the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol.

Cole also appeared in some 30 plays and numerous television series, including Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color in the United States.

Tributes poured in last month, including one from Tony Hall, the director general of the BBC.

“George Cole was a wonderful actor and he has a very special place in the public’s affection,” he said. “He will be greatly missed.”

R By Jill LawlessTHIS SUMMER, Britain’s headlines have been dominated by one story – thousands of migrants massing in France, aiming to get to England through the Channel Tunnel. Britain’s jingoistic tab-loids say it’s an invasion. Prime Minister David Cameron has called the Syrians, Afghans, Eritreans and others “a swarm” headed for British shores.

They are not flocking to places like Leysdown-on-Sea, about 50 miles from the migrant camps at Calais. In fact, there are hardly any migrants to be seen in this faded seaside town, with its pubs, chip shops and amusement arcades that seem scarcely to have changed since the 1970s. It’s a poor corner of England where good jobs are hard to come by even for the locals.

But that does not stop many people here having strong opinions about the migrants, and an increasingly isolationist view of Britain’s place in the world.

“Make England an island and get rid of that poxy tunnel,” said Eve Fitzgerald. “Brick it up,” said Lesley Mansfield, sit-ting outside a seafront pub. Her friend Jacqueline Prime had a more dramatic – if not wholly serious – idea: “Bomb it in the middle.”

FUELEDThe fortress mentality is fueled by

reports of nightly clashes as French police try to stop the travelers, many of whom have made perilous journeys across the Mediterranean before head-ing north across Europe. Several people have died as would-be stowaways tried to board trucks and freight trains through the tunnel.

The reality, however, is that the vast majority of Calais migrants never set foot in this town on the marshy Isle of Sheppey, or in any of the towns and cit-ies on the economically battered coastal fringe of eastern England, where anti-immigrant and anti-European sentiments are on the rise.

The right-wing UK Independence Party has gained support in the region among voters who feel immigration and European Union membership have brought economic adversity and un-wanted social change.

There is no doubting that parts of Britain have been transformed over the past decade by migration, but it has mostly been by the arrival of hundreds of thousands of legal newcomers from east-

ern Europe, adding to previous waves of immigration. Many Britons embrace the country’s growing multiculturalism, which has made London one of the most diverse and dynamic cities on Earth.

BELIEFAnd contrary to popular belief, there is

little evidence that migrants are “steal-ing” British jobs: In March, Britain’s unemployment rate fell to 5.5 percent – the lowest rate in seven years.

And despite the dramatic scenes in Calais, the UN refugee agency’s director for Europe noted last month that “most of the asylum seekers in the UK do not arrive through the Channel.”

“Two-thirds of the asylum seekers in the UK have come legally to the UK, with visas,” said Vincent Cochetel. “There is not a significant wave of people coming to the UK ... I know the images on TV of those people trying to go through the Channel are quite amazing, but we should not think that this is an unmanageable situation.”

Insular feeling on the Isle of Sheppey is at odds with census data that indicates the population is overwhelmingly UK-born. Not many of the migrants who make it across the Channel see any point staying in such an isolated, economically depressed area.

“There are a few, but they disappear quick out of here,” said Stuart O’Brien, a 73-year-old retiree. “There’s nothing here for them – there’s nothing here for the locals.”

HARDERBut whether it’s based on fact or

fiction, Britain’s rising anti-immigrant mood could make it harder for Cameron to persuade voters to remain in the 28-nation EU in a referendum that will be held by the end of 2017. The scenes in Calais – and a perception that French

AFFECTS ON BRITAIN

Migrant Crisis Alarms Britain – But Fears Clash With Facts

authorities are doing little about the situation – are fuel for those who want Britain to go it alone.

Rob McNeil of the Migration Observa-tory, an Oxford University think tank, said the “very visible bottleneck” at Calais is feeding public perceptions that Britain faces a tide of migrants.

But the UK is far from Europe’s top destination for refugees. The UN refugee agency says Britain received just over 31,000 asylum claims in 2014 – a frac-tion of the 173,000 refugees who went to Germany, and fewer than Sweden, Italy, France or Hungary.

Cameron has vowed to curb welfare benefits for asylum-seekers in an effort to make Britain a less attractive destina-tion for migrants. But two of the biggest pull factors are Britain’s relatively vi-brant economy and the global dominance of the English language – not things any government would want to change.

DIFFICULT“Politicians are in an extremely dif-

ficult situation,” said McNeil. “There is much pressure from the press and the public for them to be seen to be resolving this situation.

“It’s not an easy problem to solve. People are there because there are major crises unfolding around the borders of Europe.”

And not everyone in Leysdown lacks sympathy for the migrants. John Edward Williams, a retiree vacationing from his home in the nearby county of Essex, worries about migrants who “put nothing in the kitty” and receive benefits. But he said he has no problems with immigrants who work and pay taxes.

“If these people are going to dice with death to get to this country,” he said, “then wherever they come from must be a terrible place.”

competition.Eight football stadiums, including Wembley and Villa Park will be used.Rugby Football Union (RFU) chief executive Ian Ritchie said: “It is truly a

national event that the game and the country will feel a part of.”Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, Kingsholm in Gloucester and Exeter’s Sandy

Park are the only other rugby venues.

THE POOLS

R By Nick PerryNEW ZEALAND is considering chang-ing its flag. The public was encouraged to come up with ideas, and submitted more than 10,000 designs. A government-appointed panel has winnowed those down to 40 finalists.

Many in New Zealand consider the cur-rent flag to be outdated and too similar to Australia’s flag. It depicts Britain’s Union Jack in the top left corner, which harks back to a colonial past that many New Zealanders are eager to put behind them. New Zealand sometimes comes under the shadow of Australia, its larger neighbor, and having flags that are almost identical only compounds that problem.

However, there are plenty of New Zea-landers who want to keep their current flag. Many veterans fought under the flag and feel a special bond to it..

THE DESIGNSAlmost all of the 40 finalists feature one

of three design elements, or a combination of them: the koru, the silver fern and the Southern Cross.

The koru is a spiral symbol that was often used in indigenous Maori art. It depicts an unfurling fern frond. It also has metaphorical meanings, suggesting per-petual movement and the circular nature of life. It is featured on many things, from tattoo designs to Air New Zealand’s logo.

The silver fern is the koru unfurled. Native ferns are found throughout New Zealand forests and the silver fern is noted for its striking appearance. Even more than the koru, the silver fern has become a national symbol, and is worn by many of

the country’s sports teams, including the beloved All Blacks rugby team.

The Southern Cross is a distinctive star constellation visible from the Southern Hemisphere. Unlike the koru and silver fern, the Southern Cross is featured on the current flag.

THE SELECTIONIn choosing the finalists, the government

panel said in an open letter that it kept the following in mind:

“A great flag should be distinctive and so simple it can be drawn by a child from memory. A great flag is timeless and com-municates swiftly and potently the essence of the country it represents. A flag should carry sufficient dignity to be appropriate for all situations in which New Zealanders might be represented. It should speak to all Kiwis.”

Some people are concerned the 40 designs are too similar and not artistically ambitious enough. Others worry they look too much like corporate logos, are too com-plicated or don’t tell a strong enough story.

Many New Zealanders have also criti-cized the cost of the process to taxpayers: 26 million New Zealand dollars ($17m).

The Flag Consideration Panel will choose four final flag designs by mid-September. New Zealanders will then vote for their favorite among those in a November referendum.

But even then, changing the flag is by no means a certainty. After a favorite alterna-tive flag is chosen, it will be pitted head-to-head with the current flag in a second referendum, to be held next March. Only then will New Zealanders decide whether they’ll get a new flag.

New Zealand Picks 40 Best From 10,000 Designs For New Flag

Cricket: Aussies Pulverized, England Take

Back The AshesAFTER WINNING the first Test match at Cardiff by 159 runs, and losing the second Test at Lords by 405 runs, England got themselves back in gear and roared forward to win the next two Tests and win back the Ashes. A noisy Edgbaston roared their ap-proval as England scuttled the Australians in the third day of the third Test match to produce a winning eight wickets result, after a tremendous, confidence boosting perfor-mance. Australia 136 and 265. England 281 and 124-2 at close. James Anderson took six wickets for 47 runs as the Aussies tumbled in the first innings, and Steven Finn took six wickets in the second innings also, for the loss of 79 runs.

The fourth Test at Trent Bridge, saw the Australians bowled out by lunch on the first day, for just 60 runs in one of the shortest innings in Test cricket history. England would take complete control to win by an innings and 78 runs after three days of play, and retake the Ashes with a 3-1 uncatchable lead. Australia 60 and 253. England 391 (Joe Root 130)-9 dec. England captain Alistair Cook, called the Ashes victory “beyond belief,” while Aussie skipper Michael Clarke, announced he will retire at the end of this series… A three dayer at the County Ground against Northants, gave the Aussies a break from the pressure where rain intervened for a drawn game. Northants 396 (Steven Crook 142). Australia 312-9 dec.

Other international series saw Pakistan win 2-1 in Sri Lanka, and South Africa drew both Test matches in Bangladesh.

The County GameKent chalked up an innings and 23 runs

home victory over Northamptonshire 167 and 208. Kent 398. Hampshire swamped Warwickshire by 216 runs at the Ageas Bowl. Hampshire 285 and 331 (James Vince 125 not out). Warwicks 125 and 227. Yorkshire lead the County Championship mid-August, having won eight matches from 11 games for a points total of 208. Middlesex chase with 170pts. Lancashire head Division Two with seven wins from twelve games and 215pts. Surrey, have also recorded seven victories this season also, and are chasing on 205pts.

Golf . . . British OpenAustralian Rebecca Artis, won the Scot-

tish Ladies Open at Dundonald with a six under par late July. Top Brit finisher was Holly Clyburn who was third two strokes distant… Presidential candidate Donald Trump was at Turnberry, Ayrshire, for the Women’s British Open where he made the obligatory political speech. Trump bought the Turnberry course last year. South Korea’s Inbee Park fired off a 12 under par 276, to claim her seventh major title winning by three strokes. Melissa Reid and the Welsh, 22 year old Amy Boulden, were best finishers for the Brits, on 284. Same August 2 week-end, Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnat, beat Robert Carlsson by one hole in the inaugural Altire Energy Paul Lawrie Match-Play at the Murcar Links, Aberdeen. Former Open winner Lawrie, competed but was knocked out very early by Chris Doak, beaten by the one hole.

Justin Rose Shows His TalentJustin Rose tied third place at the WGC

Bridgestone International at Akron, Ohio, August 9, where his eight under 273 won him close to half a million dollars. Ireland’s Shane Lowry captured the big prize with an 11 under 269. Jeff Maggert beat Colin Montgomerie by four strokes in the Champions Shaw Charity Classic at Calgary, Alberta, where a 16 under 194 proved entirely adequate for the American. Monty hit an eight under par 62, during the first round, but was unable to continue the pace… Justin Rose put in another classy performance at Sheyboyan, Wisconsin, in the American PGA Champion-ship, concluding August 17. He was the top finishing Brit, but Australian Jason Day, reaped the glory with a 20 under 268, three clear of Jordan Spieth. Rose finished with a 274, six off the lead. Rory McIIroy was back after his soccer injury finishing with a 279. It’s

been seven years since Tiger Woods won a Major – he did not survive the cut this time.

Swimming: Three Gold Medals For Adam PeatyThe World Aquatic & Swimming Champi-

onships in Kazan, Russia, August 2-9, saw some exceptional winning performances by British divers and swimmers after a haul of six gold, one silver and six bronze, was a significant improvement on the one silver and one bronze that was the Britain’s tally in 2013. Adam Peaty captured gold medals in the 50m and the 100m breast-stroke finals, beside a third gold in the 4x100m mixed medley relay, where team-mates Chris Walker-Heblum, Siobhan Marie O’Conner, and Fran Halsall, pushed the British squad to a world record. James Guy scored gold in the 200m freestyle and a silver in the 400m freestyle. He also won a gold in the 4x200m relay with Dan Wallace, Robbie Renwick, and Calum Jarvis. Tom Daley and Rebecca Gallantine took the gold medal in the diving team event, and Gary Hunt captured the top spot in the 27m high dive competition.

Pharoah’s A WinnerTriple crown winner American Pharoah,

eased to victory at the Haskell Invitational at Ocean Port, NJ, July 2, winning by two and a quarter lengths from 18-1 shot Keen Ice. You’d have had to lay out $10 to win one as the Bob Baffert trained super-horse dominat-ed this one mile, two furlong course. A record 60,000 fans gathered at the Monmouth race track. Six ran. Presidential contestant Chris Christie, presented the trophy, but the crowd was hardly partisan and the New Jersey governor brought forth a plethora of booing.

Tennis; Murray Tames Djokovic

British men’s tennis number two Aliaz Bedene, reached the quarter-finals of the Hamburg Open, before losing 6-4, 7-5, to the Italian, Fabio Fognini. Celebration for Jamie Murray and Aussie partner John Peers, who won the men’s doubles title beating the Columbians, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8, in the final… Andy Murray added an extra tournament to his schedule, and probably wished he hadn’t. He got a bye in the first round of the Washing-ton Open, but went out in the second round. 6-4, 4-6, 7- 6 (7-4) to Teymura Gabashvilli of Russia… Later, a joyous Murray did an-nounce his wife, Kim, was pregnant and the happy event is due in February.

The Scot evaded a ninth consecutive defeat from rival Novak Djokovic, in the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, beating the Serb 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Earlier he’d eliminated Tommy Robredo (Sp), Gilles Muller (Lux), Jo Wilfried Tsongas (Fr) and Kei Nishikori of Japan in the semi-finals. It’s the fourth ATP title for Murray this year, and his third career win here in Canada.

World Netball Bronze For England

The Women’s World Netball Champion-ship hosted in Sydney, Australia, August 7-16, featured sixteen competing nations. The event which began in 1963, has wit-nessed Australia win five of the last six tournaments. England has scored a silver and three bronze medals in recent years. England was top of their preliminary group with vic-tories over Jamaica, Samoa, and Scotland. Wales topped their group beating Uganda, Fiji, and Zambia. In the semi-final grouping, England lost 51-41 to Australia before beating Wales 78-33. Wales had earlier been beaten 68-40 by South Africa. England beat South Africa 62-46. England collected the bronze with a 66-44 win over Jamaica. The final witnessed the Aussies beat New Zealand 58-55, to regain their world crown. Scotland and Wales finished in the mix. Scotland ended their schedule with a 51-41 win over Fiji, and Wales prevailed 64-41 over Uganda.

Rare Win For The Gunners Over Chelsea Wembley Stadium was filled to capacity,

July 2, where the traditional opener for the new English soccer season, the FA Com-munity Shield, brought together English Champions Chelsea and FA Cup winners Ar-senal. A rather subdued game of football, as players worked the rust from their off-season joints, where an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain goal in the 24th minute provided the only goal of the game and a rare victory for the Gunners over Chelsea. Former Chelsea goalie Petr Cech, now in the Arsenal goal, had a quiet game until a shot on target in the 68th minute, but was delighted to collect a win-ner’s medal over his old club. Blues coach

Jose Mourinho, commented ”We were the best team,” but Arsenal defenders shut up shop time and again. No love lost between Arsene Wenger and Mourinho, who walked past each other at the conclusion without the obligatory handshake. It was Arsenal’s first win over Chelsea in their last eleven meetings.

The previous day at Wembley, the Wom-en’s FA Cup Final drew 30,000 plus, as Chelsea Ladies beat Notts County Ladies 1-0, the goal scored by Ji So-Yun in the thirtieth minute.

Champions League; Celtic & United Push Ahead

A partisan crowd of 43,000 plus gather at Parkhead, for the third qualifying round of the Champion’s league, July 29-August 5, but FK Qarabag remained unimpressed by the Scottish champion’s credentials. A Dedryck Boyatta header from six yards, eight minutes from time, saved the hoops embar-rassment in front of their fans with a narrow 1-0 victory. The away leg in Azerbaijan, saw limited chances and few shots at goals for both sides, but the Hoops kept the match scoreless and that narrow home win put them through.

The final qualifying round prior to the group stage witnessed the first legs August 18-19, with Manchester United providing all four goals in their 3-1 win in their Old Trafford fixture against Club Brugge. An own goal by Michael Carrick put the Belgians ahead after eight minutes, but Memphis Depay equalized five minutes later. Depay would add to his total, when he put a 25 yard drive away two minute before the break. Marouane Fellalini made it three in injury time. Brugge played a man down during the last ten minutes after Meschele was sent off… At Parkhead, Celtic seemed in control with a 2-0 lead after ten minutes against Malmo FF. Leigh Griffiths in the third minute and Nir Bitton after ten, showcased a hoops side bouncing with confidence. The Swedes got a goal in the 52nd minute, Griffiths hit a second for Celtic nine minutes later, with Malmo getting another one in the closing minute. Celtic’s 3-2 win leaves the second leg with everything to play for.

The 2015 Euro-Super-Cup final between the European Champions Barcelona, and Eu-ropa League Champions Sevilla took place at Tbilisi, Georgia, August 11. Neymar was out with the mumps. Two goals by Messi, help put Barcelona 4-1 ahead, but their Spanish rivals came back with a flourish to end the 90 minutes a 4-4. Pedro provided the winner for Barca, with just five minutes of extra-time remaining, where the 5-4 victory gave the European Champions their fifth Super-Cup

Europa League; West Ham & Aberdeen Out

The third qualifying round of the Eu-ropa League, July 30-August 6, witnessed Aberdeen make a 6,000 mile round-trip plus journey to Kazakhstan, where they went two down after 22 minutes against Kairat Almaty. Kenny McLean got one back in the 69th minute as the Dons lost 2-1. At Pittodrie, the Don’s never got into full gear and struggled to get going, and a 59th minute netting by Kairat Almaty, had the stadium stunned. Kenny McLean, levelled it six minutes from time which resulted in some desperate attacking measures in the final minutes that proved fruitless however, and Aberdeen’s European dreams was over for another year.

West Ham gave up a 2-0 lead against Romanian side Giurgiu at Upton Park, dur-ing which James Collins, was red-carded in the 59th minute. Enno Valencia (23m) and Mauro Zarate, six minutes after the break had the Hammers looking confident, but Astra Giurgiu scored in the 71st minute, and West Ham’s Angelo Ogbonna headed in his own net, eight minutes from time for a 2-2 result The Hammers’ off-colour performances in recent European games continued to haunt them in Romania, during the second leg. Manuel Lanzini, put West Ham ahead

after just three minutes, but Giurgiu skipper Budescu, hit two within four minutes of each other in the 32nd and 36th minutes that produced a 2-1 win for the hosts. Eliminated West Ham must wonder where their European aspirations went?

Saints Reach Final Qualifying Round

Southampton drew Vitesse Arnhem at St Marys, and though their European soccer attempts over the years have been strewn with disappointment, the Saints carved out a 3-0 win. Graziano Pelle in the 36th minute, followed by a successful penalty on the break by Dusan Tadic. Shane Long got the third, six minutes from the whistle. In Holland, Graziano Pelle struck in the fourth minute and Sadio Mane added a second with a minute to go, giving Southampton a 5-0 winning aggregate.

The final qualifying round first leg, August 20, saw Southampton come from a goal behind at St Marys, after former striker Tim Sparv, found the net for Midtylland on half-time. But Jay Rodriguez, put a penalty away for the Saints in the 56th minute that provided a 1-1 result against the Danes.

Championship Sides Take A Hit

The first round of the Capital One English league Cup, August 11-12, provided a mix of Championship, Divison One and Two sides with nine Championship outfits suffer-ing reversals at the hands of lower division clubs. Division Two’s Luton Town ousted Bristol City 3-1 at home, and from the same division, Oxford Utd delivered a painful 4-0 thrashing at Brentford, last year’s Champion-ship promotion chasers. Portsmouth added to division two’s resurgence with a 2-1 home win over Derby County.

Division One clubs continue the carnage with Burton Albion beating Bolton 1-0 away from home, while Walsall’s Tom Bradshaw, scored a hat-trick as the midlanders prevailed 4-3 at Nottingham Forest. Port Vale beat Burnley 1-0, and Blackburn Rovers were beaten 2-1 at home by Shrewsbury Town. Notts County had Gill Swerts sent off in the 69th minute, away at Huddersfield Town, but were 2-0 up by then. Huddersfield did get a goal back but the County won 2-1. The Doncaster Rover-Leeds encounter at the Keepmoat Stadium, had the score 1-1 at extra-time, after Leeds’ Lewis Cook got red-carded in the 37th minute. Rovers won a penalty shootout 4-2.

Soccer In AmericaThe annual MLS All-Star fixture, this time

against Tottenham Hotspur at Commerce City, Colorado, drew an 18,000 plus crowd, July 28. Nacer Chadli was penalized for handball, and Kaka put the penalty away. David Villa pushed the MLS to 2-0 just three minutes later. Harry Kane had a number of opportunities, but a 25 yard drive in the 37th minute did find its mark. The MLS won 2-1.

Mexican coach Miguel “Piolo” Herrera, just two days after winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup got into an altercation at Mexico City airport with local journalists and was immediately fired.

David Beckham’s MLS Miami franchise got the vote of the City of Miami Commis-sioners with a planned location next to the Florida Marlins stadium, who may prove to be un-neighbourly neighbours. The Marlin’s deal with the City involved complicated scenarios with businesses adjacent to the Stadium, giving the baseball club the role of arbitrator in any disputes. The Marlins do not want to be over-shadowed by the new soccer arena. The site has to be cleared of several businesses and an apartment complex before construction can begin.

Scottish SoccerThe first round of the Scottish League

Cup, saw high scoring home victories for Falkirk who conquered East Stirling 5-0, Dunfermline went 5-1 over Cowdenbeath, and Morton 5-0 against Elgin City. David Templeton, Kenny Miller and James Tav-ernier pushed Rangers to a 3-0 win over Peterhead at the Ibrox.

The Scottish Challenge (Petrovac Training) Cup is down to the final eight after the second round was completed August 19-20. Rang-ers won 2-0 at Ayr United courtesy of Nicky Clark and Barrie McKay. Peterhead’s Rory McAllisters scored all five goals at Falkirk, where Peterhead came away 5-3 winners. St Mirren won 2-1 at Annan Athletic, and Dunfermline were 3-0 winners at Forfar.

Sporting PassingsWrestling icon Rowdy Roddy Piper, was

often introduced as being from Glasgow, Scotland, but in fact, he was born in Sas-katchewan, Canada, as Roderick George Toombs. Scottish and Irish heritage ran through his veins however, and he was very proficient on the bagpipes, so a kilt was not a stretch for the athlete in his role as a professional wrestler. He started his career as Roddy the Piper. A former boxer and Judo black belt as a youngster. He learned that feuds with other wrestlers brought in the fans and boosted fame and fortune. The WWE proclaimed him, “The greatest villain in wrestling history.” Later, he mixed a movie career with his time in the ring. Piper’s Pit enlarged his fame even more, where other wrestlers guested on his show, and were severely insulted. Altercations regularly broke out much to the joy of wrestling fans. Rowdy Roddy Piper was 61.

Gold For Mo Farah & Jessica Ennis-Hill

Mo Farah got straight down to business on the first day of the World Athletic Cham-pionships in Beijing, China, August 22-30, by winning the gold medal in the 10,000m, thus retaining his crown from two years ago. Jessica Ennis-Hill took the gold in the Heptathlon. Usain Bolt beat Justin Gatlin to win the 100m world title at the Bird’s Nest stadium in Bejing. Bolt’s 9.79 seconds saw him pass the controversial Gatlin at the line… England won the Ashes, but lost the final Test match of the series at the Oval by an innings and 46 runs. Rain held up play for three hours on the fourth day but there was no relief for a struggling England side. Australia 481 (Steven Smith 143) England 149, then followed on with 286 all out… England’s men got off to a great start in London with a 10-1 win over Russia, at the European Hockey Championships, August 21-30. England’s women beat Scotland women 2-1… Britain’s David Horsey, captured his fourth career European circuit victory, winning the Danish Open at Himmeland, after a 13 under 271, two ahead of the field… Lewis Hamilton turned his pole position at the Belgium Grand Prix, August 23,in to victory where team-mate Nico Rosberg followed him home in second place… Andy Murray was beaten in the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters, August 23, where Roger Federer came through a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) winner. The Scot had previously pushed aside Mardy Fish (US) Grigor Dimitrov (Bul) and France’s Richard Gasquet. Federer beat Djokovic in the final. Britain’s Greg Rutherford added world gold to his Olympic, European and Commonwealth titles. His leap, in Bejing, of 8.41m saw him finish clear of Australia Fabrice Lapierre’s 8.24m. Only four other Britons – Daley Thompson, Linford Christie, Sally Gunnell and Jonathan Edwards – have ever held all four titles at the same time.

Doncaster Lets Bury Through To Score From Kickoff

SPORTSMANSHIP was the winner when players with League One Doncaster Rovers stood by and allowed their opponents to walk in a late equalizer from the restart after the home side scored by mistake in a league match last month.

Following an injury to a player, Doncaster midfielder Harry Forrester tried to follow Eng-land’s unwritten sporting code by returning the ball to Bury goalkeeper Christian Walton, who was then supposed to knock the ball out of play.

Unfortunately, Forrester’s pass was over-hit and went over Walton’s head and into the Bury net in stoppage time.

Rovers manager Paul Dickov then in-structed his players to clear a path for Bury to score, and they duly allowed Leon Clarke to amble half the length of the pitch unchal-lenged before tapping home to make it 1-1 just before the final whistle.

“I didn’t really think twice about allow-ing them to equalize,” Dickov said. “It just wouldn’t have been right for us to take three points in the circumstances ... you can’t win a game like that.”

Jack Wilshere Out For Weeks With Cracked Left Fibula

ARSENAL’S Jack Wilshere has fractured his left fibula and will face “a few weeks out.”

Wilshere sustained the injury after a train-ing ground collision last last month but the extent of the damage was only revealed a few days later.

The 23-year-old Wilshere, an England in-ternational, has had frequent injury problems throughout his career.

He missed five months of last season after surgery on a left ankle injury sustained against Manchester United in November.

United Wants Big Transfer Fee If De Gea Leaves For Madrid

MANCHESTER United coach Louis van Gaal made it clear last month that David De Gea will command a big transfer fee if the goal-keeper targeted by Real Madrid is to leave Old Trafford.

World Cup TV DevelopmentsAND SO, finally, the World Cup is with us, England kicking it all off against Fiji at Twickenham on Friday, September 18 at 8pm BST. It will reach its climax six weeks and a day later, back at Twickenham with a 4pm (GMT) kick-off.

Those of you who follow cricket will know of Hawk-Eye, the television camera system that enables instant replays of key passages of play and is the final arbiter in a disputed dismissal. After experimentation with all manner of replay technology, focus-ing on the Guinness Pro 12 competition in Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Italy, Hawk-Eye was finally adopted for the top internationals during England’s warm-up match with France last month.

A whole host of controversial decisions in the past would have been instantly cleared up, such as when Mark Cueto was penalised in 2007 in the tight Paris final against South Africa for a foot in touch while touching

down. He has always maintained that it was a fair try.

The 36 cameras which Hawk-Eye employs will have another far more beneficial impact upon the game in that they can be instantly accessed by the pitch-side medical staff. They will be able to replay an incident leading to an injury in order to ascertain a potential problem and administer swift treatment. Players are often left rolling around after a collision but it is vital to establish if there has been a head injury.England See Off The French

England registered a narrow 19-14 win over France in a warm-up game in August. Anthony Watson scored two marvellous tries while Rugby League convert, Sam Burgess, looked more than useful in the centre. Sadly he blotted his copy-book picking up a ten-minute spell in choky for holding back a Frenchman taking a quick free-kick. Naughty and ill-advised for someone hoping to impress Stuart Lancaster.

Welsh Setback Against Ireland

Welsh preparations suffered a severe setback when they took on the Six Nations champions, Ireland, at the Millennium Sta-dium last month. They conceded no less than five tries in a shock 21-35 defeat. Fortunately they are not in the same pool as the Irish who

Sebastian Coe Elected IAAF President

SEBASTIAN COE was elected as the sixth IAAF President at the 50th IAAF Congress in Beijing, China, last month.

“I am deeply honoured that our sport has placed its trust in me. There is no job I want to do more – nor with greater commitment,” said Coe.

Among the first to congratulate Sebastian Coe were the current IAAF President Lamine Diack and Sergey Bubka, who was later elected as an IAAF Vice President.

“We have a man who has devoted his life to the sport.” commented President Diack.

“I know that athletics in the future will grow, and become stronger and stronger,” added Bubka.

Coe will take office after the end of the IAAF World Championships, Beijing 2015.

Videos Of Racism In English Soccer Can Be Uploaded To App

FANS AND PLAYERS in England who experience or witness racism or dis-crimination at soccer games or on social media will be able to upload videos and pictures of incidents via a mobile phone application.

Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out says is enhancing the ability of people to confidentially report incidents to ensure there is more conclusive evidence to as-sist investigations.

The Kick It Out app, which is available on Apple and Android devices, did not previously have a feature to allow users to report racist abuse on social media.

Research for Kick It Out this year estimated that an abusive post toward a Premier League player or club is made once every 2.6 minutes on average.

The app, which was first released in 2013, accounted for more than a third of the reports received by Kick It Out last year about abuse in the professional game in England.

De Gea has been left out of the team in all games so far this season.

Asked if he hoped the transfer saga will end soon, Van Gaal told BT Sport: “I’m not the most important part. The most important part is the player and of course the club who wants to buy him. He is our best player for two or three years already, chosen by the fans, so we cannot let him go so easily.”

But he added that “we have to pay a lot of money for all the players we want, and we want to sell at the same level.”

Speculation that the Madrid-born keeper could be heading home has been heightened by the fact that De Gea has only one year left his contract – and can leave for free at the end of the season.

Man City Manager Pellegrini Given Extra Year To 2017

MANCHESTER City said last month it had extended the contract of manager Manuel Pellegrini to 2017.

Pellegrini’s last deal was to expire in 2016.City said that similar extensions have been

given to his coaching staff. The 61-year-old Pellegrini, who won the

English Premier League in his first season with City in 2014, came under pressure last season when they finished runner-up to Chelsea, and Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola was repeatedly linked to his job.

Leicester Fines Vardy Over Racist Term Aimed At

Japanese ManLEICESTER has fined striker Jamie Vardy after he was filmed using racist language toward a Japanese man in a casino.

Footage published by The Sun newspaper appeared to show Vardy using a derogatory word for a Japanese person three times to a fellow gambler in a Leicester casino last month.

Vardy has already issued an apology and Leicester says it has now handed him a “substantial fine and prescribed a program of diversity awareness training.”

The Premier League club also says Vardy has “been reminded of his responsibilities to the club, his profession and the Leicester community.”

Leicester says the fine will be donated to local charities.

Japan international Shinji Okazaki joined Leicester in the offseason.

look likely to progress from theirs, Pool D, since it features France, Canada, Romania and Italy.

Ireland hosted Scotland in mid-August, winning a scrappy game 28-22. The Irish came from behind three times as Scotland showed signs of recovering from last-sea-son’s whitewash in the Six Nations. Neither side look remotely likely to reach the World Cup semi-final stage.

Wales are in Pool A, along with Australia, England, Uruguay and Fiji, and the English pronounced themselves well satisfied with Wales going down to Ireland, more convinced than ever that they and Australia will progress to the quarter-finals. Pool B consists of Scot-land, South Africa, Samoa and the USA. The other minnows are to be found swimming in Pool C: New Zealand. Argentina, Tonga, Namibia and Georgia.

New Zealand Win Rugby Championship – Yet Again

New Zealand, by the way, retained the Rugby Championship and the Bledisloe Cup in mid-August with an imperious 41-13 home win over Australia who had beaten them 27-19 the previous week in Sydney. Richie McCaw made his 142nd appearance, beating Brian O’Driscoll’s record, in his final home match. He will retire after the World Cup.
