PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

I hope everyone has had a relaxing holiday or at least an enjoyable break over Easter. We hope the joy of Easter re-mains with you throughout the term. We begin the term with a focus on ‘confidence’. In today’s hectic world where there are so many pressures, our chil-dren need to have a healthy self-esteem and the confi-dence to try new things. A part of learning is having the courage to try new things and to persist when things don’t go the way we expect. It is about having a mindset that says ‘I’m going to give this a go.’ Each class will include a focus on ‘confidence’ throughout the term and it would be great if you could reinforce this at home. I have included an article about raising confident children that might help start off your conversations.

CHANGE TO NEWSLETTER PUBLICATION We will trial sending out a fortnightly newsletter rather than weekly. I would like to remind parents that if you have lost or misplaced your copy, you can always access it from the school website or from the school app. The newsletter is put on these regularly.

ANZAC DAY Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service. Every year, students from our school have partici-pated in this national memorial by marching from the Bowls Club to the Cenotaph. The RSL also invites the children and their families to join them at the RSL hall for light refreshments after the service. We will be gathering at the Bowls Club at 8.30am. If you are able to attend, we ask that students wear their uniform (not sports uni-form). If the weather is warm, summer uni-form, and if it is cool, winter uniform. We hope you will be able to join us in com-memorating this important event.

READING POWER May is Scholastic’s National Family Reading Month. This year the focus is on reading aloud together. A flyer is attached giving details of the challenge so if you are inter-ested, go online and enter your child into the competition. This is a great way to share with your children. Information will also be sent home very soon, giving details for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Jade Wheeler is cur-rently getting this organized and Jennie Missen has been busy labelling the books in our library that are on the Premier’s Reading Challenge booklist. I hope you’ll encour-age your children to participate in this event—it’s a great opportuni-ty to promote a love and enjoy-ment of reading.

BOOK FAIR & BOOK CLUB P & F are running the Scholastic Book Fair again—I know how popular this has been in the past and we hope you will continue to support it. It will be open for purchases on the 2nd and 3rd of May (EFTPOS facilities available). Times will be posted on the app and the P&F Facebook page. Book club catalogues will be sent home next week and will be due back at School on the 4th May. Feel free to compare Book Fair prices with the catalogue as sometimes prices vary.

GAMES AND HOBBIES CLUB This term we are running Games and Hobbies Club on a Wednesday lunchtime. Students are able to go to the com-puter room and choose activities or games to do or they may like to just come in and socialize. Students can choose from science kits, construction sets, Planks, chess games, interactive puzzles, beading, drawing, and so on. They might also like to bring in something of their own to play with. Maybe some students would like to create a coding

club during this time. Students can stay for as long as they want over lunch time—they don’t have to remain inside the whole time.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Happy Birthday to everyone who celebrated their birthday during the past week and during the holidays.

Marie Holt 16th April

Will 19th April

UNIFORM Updates are being made to our uniform policy and winter uniform will be required to be worn during terms 2 & 3, with 2 week transition times at the beginning and end of this period. Shorts can continue to be worn on sports days if this is preferred, but long pants (boys & girls) or tunics/skirts are the uniform on non-sport days. Sports days this term are Tuesdays and Thursdays but this will change later in the term. Please make sure that socks are proper anklets and sit above the ankle. P&F have some uniform available—contact Anita if you require this, otherwise uniform is available from JSM in Sale. Girls will be able to wear long grey pants with the pale blue shirt (new winter uniform) if they prefer pants to a skirt or pinafore, however we are having trouble sourcing the grey pants at this stage. Navy gabardine pants will be accepted until we can get grey ones. If you have any questions about uniform, please come and ask. The transition time can be a bit confusing. PLEASE NOTE: We expect all students to be wearing full winter uniform for the Peace Mass.

GETTING TO SCHOOL ON TIME Please make sure that you are getting your children to school on time. It is important that they are ready to start the school day at 8.40am. It is also disruptive when stu-

dents are walking in late, whether this is at our short morning assembly or in the classroom.

LUNCH ORDERS Now that Busy Bees has closed, lunch orders will only be available from the Corner Store. As we have to pick these up, we are limiting lunch orders to Wednesdays and Fri-days.

BIKE ED Bike Ed is off to a great start with students saying they had a good time even though it was a bit warm! Thank you to Kellie Hole for coordinating this and to our bike ed volun-teers who are running the program for our students.

SAFETY REMINDER Please remind your children that they need to be using the crossings. It has been pointed out to me on several occa-sions that some students are crossing the road at the busi-est intersection and not using the crossing.

TERM DATES 2017: TERM 2 - 18 April—30 June TERM 3 - 17 July—22 September TERM 4 - 9 October—22 December PUBLIC HOLIDAYS: Term 2 - Tuesday 25 April (ANZAC Day) Monday 12 June (Queen’s Birthday) Term 4 - Tuesday 7 November (Melbourne Cup)

Raising Confident Kids It takes confidence to be a kid. Whether going to a new school or stepping up to bat for the first time, kids face a lot of uncharted territory. Naturally, parents want to instill a can-do attitude in their kids so that they'll bravely take on new challenges and, over time, be-lieve in themselves. While each child is a little different, parents can follow some general guidelines to build kids' confidence. Self-confidence rises out of a sense of competence. In other words, kids develop confidence not because parents tell them they're great, but because of their achievements, big and small. Sure, it's good to hear encouraging words from mom and dad. But words of praise mean more when they refer to a child's specific efforts or new abilities. When kids achieve something, whether it's brushing their own teeth or riding a bike, they get a sense of themselves as able and capable, and tap into that high-octane fuel of confidence.

Building self-confidence can begin very early. When babies learn to turn the pages of a book or toddlers learn to walk, they are getting the idea "I can do it!" With each new skill and milestone, kids can develop increasing confidence. Parents can help by giving kids lots of opportunities to practice and master their skills, letting kids make mistakes and being there to boost their spirits so they keep trying. Respond with interest and excitement when kids show off a new skill, and reward them with praise when they achieve a goal or make a good effort.

With plentiful opportunities, good instruction, and lots of patience from parents, kids can master basic skills — like tying their shoes and making the bed. Then, when other important challenges present themselves, kids can approach them knowing that they have already been successful in other areas.

Stay on the Sidelines Of course, supervision is important to ensure that kids stay safe. But to help them really learn a new skill, it's also important not to hover. Give kids the opportunity to try something new, make mistakes, and learn from them. For instance, if your son wants to learn how to make a peanut butter sandwich, demonstrate, set up the ingredients, and let him give it a try. Will he make a bit of a mess? Almost certainly. But don't swoop in the second some jelly hits the countertop. In fact, avoid any criticism that could discourage him from trying again. If you step in to finish the sandwich, your son will think, "Oh well, I guess I can't make sandwiches." But if you have patience for the mess and the time it takes to learn, the payoff will be real. Someday soon he'll be able to say, "I'm hungry for lunch, so I'm going to make my own sandwich." You might even reply, "Great, can you make me one, too?" What a clear sign of your faith in his abilities!

Offer Encouragement and Praise Sometimes, kids give up when frustrations arise. Help by encouraging persistence in the midst of setbacks. By trying again, kids learn that obstacles can be overcome.

Once kids reach a goal, you'll want to praise not only the end result but also their willingness to stick with it. For instance, after your son has mastered making that peanut butter sandwich you might show your confidence by saying, "Next time, want to learn how to crack an egg?" Sandwich-fixing and egg-cracking might not seem like huge achievements, but they're important steps in the right direction — toward your child's independence.

Throughout childhood, parents have chances to prepare kids to take care of themselves. Sure, it's great to feel needed, but as kids steadily gain confidence and independence, their relationship with you can be even richer. You can be bonded, not just by dependence, but by love and shared pride in all they've achieved.

Eventually, your grown-up kids just might say thanks for how prepared they feel for the road ahead — a road they can take with confidence.
