BubblesAs the government has stated bubbles in Secondary schools are difficult. We have looked at whether class bubbles are viable, to do so would mean that we would have to:

• Base each class in a single room – which we do not believe is good for their mental health

• Unmanageable in Years 9-13 based on the current curriculum – to change the curriculum would be to limit

the personalisation of their curriculum

• Reduce/Remove learning time in the practical subjects – prioritising those students who are in their final

years of study in those courses

• Place our teaching staff under an immense amount of pressure in moving around the school, which will

lower the quality of the learning experience

• Stagger the timetable which would mean large aspects of the timetable would be taught by non-specialists

We do NOT believe that this system of education is of benefit to our students and will have a long term negative impact, therefore we

have devised the following bubble system

Mentor We highly value the hybrid vertical mentoring system that we currently have in place. However it is clear through the government's guidance that we cannot retain this system due to the bubble and Track & Trace requirements. For 2020-21 we have had no other alternative but to move to a horizontal mentoring system. It is our intention that we will return to the hybrid vertical system in future years.

We have aimed to keep students within their Community. There are however 13 students in Year 8 who have had to move to make this system manageable and keep mentor sizes below 30. They will retain their new Community throughout the remainder of their education at Hillview.

Timings for the school dayWe have had to make changes to the school day to support a staggered lunch break. This is the only way that we have been able to support social distancing without making dramatic alterations to the school day, which we believe would have been unfeasible for many staff, students and parents.

Mentor time has been moved from the start of the day to lunch. Years 8, 9 & 12 will have their mentor time at 1.15-1.35 and Years 7, 10, 11 & 13 will have their mentor time at 1.50-2.10.

Independent catering will continue to offer food to students. They have agreed to offer as wide an offer as possible through a grab and go system that includes hot meals. The variety offered will be reduced in the first instance as we establish the provision. We have staggered the lunch time entrance times to the food service areas to ensure that every year group can access food separately and a full complement of food will be reserved for each year group. We have also added in an additional service pointfor those students just wanting drinks and biscuits to spread the numbers of students across the site.

A Breakfast offer is still in place before school. We are also asking students, where possible to buy their break time snacks before school to reduce numbers passing through the food service areas during break.

One-way systems will be in place in all food outlets

Practical subjectsOn days when practical lessons are studied (Dance/Drama/PE) students may attend school in their PE kit, which removes the need for changing rooms and the varied risks that changing on the school site brings.

We are asking all students to wear full PE kit including Hoodies and tracksuit bottoms in line with the normal uniform guidance. When students are attending dance they will need to wear leggings under their tracksuit bottoms. Trainers can be worn on these days.

Hoodies etc. Are to be removed when in their practical lessons – unless the weather determines otherwise in PE.

On days when students do not study practical lessons they need to be in full school uniform. This includes normal school shoes and hoodies must not be worn with full school uniform. As always the school dress may be worn until October half term.

Movement around the schoolThe government/PHE have confirmed that there is limited risk in students passing each other in corridors. However to limit risk we will be asking students to take external routes wherever possible when moving in between lessons to lower the numbers of students passing in corridors. We are adding in some additional walkways to support this.

We will also be limiting movement in some areas of the school:

• Walking on the left is compulsory across the school site

• Stairs in the main building and in the Maths block will be designated as up and down stairs

• Due to the narrow corridor on Level 5 English – this will be used as access to English only and

the corridor between English and Maths will be closed to students

• Due to the narrow corridor on level 3 Social Sciences, this corridor should only be used by

students attending lessons in 309-312, 202 and the mini-cinema. Access to Science should be

via external routes.

Page 17: September 2020 - hillview.kent.sch.uk€¦ · school shoes and hoodies must not be worn with full school uniform. As always the school dress may be worn until October half term. Until

CleaningWe have increased the amount of cleaning that will be taking place on the school site this includes:

• Multiple cleaners on site throughout the day

• Rooms cleaned in between each bubble change

• Common areas: food service areas/stairwells/toilets/doors cleaned

throughout the day whilst not in use by the students

• Dance studio floors cleaned at each bubble change

By students and staff using antibac gel at the start and end of every lesson we

believe that we have mitigated the risk of transference through surface contact.

2nd – 4th September

It is important for students to be supported back into the school environment, returning to the expected classroom expectations and adapting to the new normal within school. Students have missed many of the celebratory events which happen at the end of the school year, which promote our community ethos and help develop and embed key character traits needed for their future. With these things in mind, each year group will follow a bespoke timetable, including a mixture of activities to help them reflect on the time they have had away from school, prepare them for the academic year ahead and reward them for their efforts throughout this difficult time.To support each child's return to 'normal' education, students will not all return to school at the same time.

Attendance

Attendance at school is mandatory for all students from the start of the academic year in September 2020.

We will therefore be following our normal attendance procedures to ensure all students are in school, including support from SEAAS, where necessary. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that expected attendance is a minimum of 98% across the year. If your daughter/son is asked to self isolate at any stage during the academic year, it will be an authorised absence and although it will be reflected in the overall percentage attendance, it will not count against students or cause the need for attendance support and intervention. If your daughter/son is unwell and unable to attend school for any reason, you must notify the school on the morning of each day of absence, before the start of the school day, by phoning the attendance line or emailing ([email protected]) providing the specific reason for the absence.

If your daughter/son is showing symptoms of Covid-19 (below) the process on the following slide should be followed, in line with Government expectation. If any member of your household is showing symptoms of coronavirus, please inform us that the student needs to self isolate as a precaution. If the person's test results come back positive inform the school that your daughter/son will need to isolate for 14 days, in case they develop symptoms. If the test is negative and the student shows no symptoms, they should return to school. If your daughter/son begins to develop symptoms, please follow the process on the next slide. The main symptoms of coronavirus are:• a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do

not need to measure your temperature)• a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or

more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

• a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Track and Trace• If we are informed that a student who has been in school tests positive for

coronavirus..........• Contact Public Health England and follow direction.• Where there is a positive case in a school or college, the Public Health England local

health protection team will advise on the appropriate action, which could include small groups of young people and staff being asked to self-isolate for up to 14 days.

• Where there are two or more confirmed cases in a two-week period, health protection teams may ask a larger number of other children or young people to self-isolate at home as a precautionary measure.

• Where an outbreak in a school is confirmed, for specific detailed investigations a mobile testing unit may be dispatched to test others who may have been in contact with the person who has tested positive. Testing will first focus on the person’s class, followed by their year group, then the whole school if necessary.

• All staff, pupils and their families will continue to have access to testing if they develop Covid-19 symptoms and schools will be provided with easy to use home testing kits for children and staff who would otherwise be unable to get a test.

Expectations of TeachersWe are asking teachers to adhere to government recommendations:

• Class tables should be facing forwards

• Formal seating plans to be in place – where possible we will aim to keep common seating plans to reduce the

number of contacts each child has – this will support Track N Trace

• Where possible teachers should remain 2m away from students and limit the amount of time in close proximity

• Use antibac gel at the start and end of each lesson as a minimum, wipe down the teacher keyboard and desk

after use

• Keep windows open and do not use the Air conditioning

Considerations for teachers:

• Learning should continue to be engaging, interactive and targeted for the students in the room – building upon

independence developed in lockdown

• Avoid using shared resources wherever possible

• Equipment should not be shared unless essential - Shared equipment should be 'quarantined' after use

• Consider how feasible group work is – considering social distancing

Page 25: September 2020 - hillview.kent.sch.uk€¦ · school shoes and hoodies must not be worn with full school uniform. As always the school dress may be worn until October half term. Until

Meetings and communal staff spaces: Staff• Always observe social distancing

• Meeting in person is often the most efficient way of working, however we ask you keep physical meetings to a minimum and continue to utilise MS Teams

• You may wish to consider outside spaces or larger spaces to meet

• Open windows

• Please social distance when in the staff room and other communal spaces. Try to find spaces where you can work alone where possible

• Where department workrooms are available consider using these rather than the main staffroom

• Some furniture has been removed from the staff room to support social distancing and to discourage close socialising. Please do not move the furniture in this space

• Consider using a thermos to reduce the frequency of trips to the communal staff kettle

Page 26: September 2020 - hillview.kent.sch.uk€¦ · school shoes and hoodies must not be worn with full school uniform. As always the school dress may be worn until October half term. Until

Student Behaviour ExpectationsHillview has a calm and positive learning environment and our code of conduct is designed to maintain this for everyone.

On our return to school in September, students must ensure that they follow all the normal school behaviourexpectations, as well as those introduced as part of the coronavirus measures.

• Students must arrive on time for school (8.35am for 8.40am start)

• Students must have the correct equipment and be prepared to learn.

• Students must complete all work to the best of their ability and meet the deadlines set.

• Students must treat and speak to all members of the Hillview community with respect.

• Students should think for themselves and take responsibility for their actions.

• Students must remain in the classroom for the entirety of lessons. Students must use the toilet and fill water bottles in their breaks, not in lesson time.

• Normal behaviour management procedures will be followed, however there will be some alterations to how detentions are run to ensure that there is no mixing between bubbles. Students must attend detentions, if set.

Page 27: September 2020 - hillview.kent.sch.uk€¦ · school shoes and hoodies must not be worn with full school uniform. As always the school dress may be worn until October half term. Until

Pastoral SupportWe recognise that students will cope with the return to school in different ways. Some students may need no support and welcome the return of the school routine. Other students may need more support and guidance when returning. All students will have access to pastoral support, with targeted support available for those that need it.

All Students:• Part of the return to school programme (First 3 days in September)• Mentor Time activities• Revised, focused PDL Lessons.

Targeted Support:• Small group or 1:1 sessions with Student Support Manager• Continued access to online support tools• Possible counselling/school nurse referral (if required)• Possible Early Help referral (if required)

Page 28: September 2020 - hillview.kent.sch.uk€¦ · school shoes and hoodies must not be worn with full school uniform. As always the school dress may be worn until October half term. Until

Pastoral – Who to talk toStudents are able to speak to any member of staff about any concerns that they have. However, the following members of staff are here to help:• Mentor – Students should speak to their mentor if they are experiencing any

difficulties – academic or social. Mentors are able to offer support and strategies for early intervention in a range of problems.

• Student Support Manager – Students can book appointments to see their Student Support Manger, by email, to discuss any concerns.

• Head of Key Stage – Students are able to speak to their Head of Key Stage about any ongoing concerns or academic issues.

• Safeguarding Team – If students are concerns for their own safety and wellbeing or that of another student, they should contact the safeguarding team using the details in their planner or on the posters around the school.

To start with, we will ensure all relevant SEN information is shared with teaching staff. For many pupils, their needs are met within the classroom environment, through the high quality teaching of our experienced and knowledgeable teaching team who will adapt their approach as appropriate. For pupils who are in receipt of significant, additional and personalised support without which they could not access learning, they will be included on the SEN register. All pupils on the SEN Register will be allocated a keyworker who will familiarise themselves with your daughter’s needs (and sons, if in year 12) and will make contact with the pupil and oversee their settling-in.Members of the Curriculum Support Team will be circulating around lessons over the first few weeks of term to observe pupils with SEN in lessons. We will work closely with parents to identify and follow up concerns. We aim, particularly this year, to ease in gently, and to get to know your child before deciding what intervention may be required. For more immediate concerns, we will of course respond appropriately. We welcome parental input into our planning, and our team can be contacted via [email protected] work closely with the Student Support Team, who offer pastoral support. Please send the SENDCo any copies of any assessments or reports if you have them, via the email address above, or provide paper copies, as they can take a while to come through from primary schools.

Special Educational Needs/Curriculum Support – existing students

We are very aware that there will have been a varied impact of the school closure on our pupils with SEN.Our pupils on the SEN register have had regular contact from their keyworker, and we hope that we have a good knowledge of how they are doing and how they’ve been. Keyworkers will make face to face contact, observing current guidelines, with the pupils to say how they are.Other pupils with SEN, whose needs are met through the high quality teaching of our staff team, will also be monitored across the school. We anticipate a wide range of needs, and will be working hard to meet these, working closely with our colleagues, parents and external agencies where appropriate.Pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans will continue to receive the level of support required by their plans.

Travel to and from school• Only use public transport if no other transportation options are available• Masks must be worn (these must be either be disposed of or kept safe in a plastic bag)• Consider Year group carshare 'bubbles' to avoid congestion in Tonbridge• If parents are dropping students into school they need to drop them off in a surrounding road – not on

the school site.• Students should aim to arrive early to avoid lateness if traffic is poor• Try to observe social distancing when traveling to and from school to protect yourself and others

If using public transport, follow safer travel guidance:Be prepared: plan your journey in advance if possible, avoiding peak times. Have your face covering

ready and consider using contactless payment or have the exact change ready. At the bus stop: give others space and be prepared to wait longer than usual. On the bus: you must wear a face covering. Follow operator guidance, do not close any windows and sit

only where you're instructed to.

KCC Travel Saver and 16+ Travel SaverApplications for September passes

• Applications now open. All applications will need to be made online.

• Applications for those eligible for free pass (carers, young people in care and care leavers) open from July 27th

In the event of uncertainty regarding whether or not to buy a pass, KCC suggest you consider:• Current government advice is to avoid public transport, so we are urging parents to use alternative transport where possible.• If children live close to the school they should walk or cycle, for those that live further away they should consider getting a lift.• How any changes to school times and social distancing on buses might affect use of the pass.• If you are traveling less frequently, you might not save as much as usual and you might want to consider getting bus tickets from

the operator.

Option to apply later in year

KCC have stated that If government guidance changes, and there are fewer restrictions on bus travel, they will make a part year pass available later in the year (January 2021) at a cost that reflects the shorter time you would use it for.

Refunds will not be given once the pass has been used.https://www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/school-transport/KCC-travel-saver
