Marc Buhrer (31) and Shane Mc-Connachi (32) put this saying intopractice recently. In trying to un-derstand what life is like for thethousands of homeless people liv-ing on the streets of Cape Town,they criss-crossed the city as two ofthe destitute.The two men, from Sea Point and

Bloubergstrand respectively, notonly walked a mile but spent awhole week on the streets, withoutthe luxuries they are accustomed toin their lives as successful entrepre-neurs.TheWalk theWalk initiative was

this year I decided to do somethingdifferent to my debaucherous 30th.

I got some mates together and wecooked food for 220 people at TheHaven shelter. Everyone that gotinvolved said it was the most amaz-ing thing and it was the best birth-day I ever had. So we just decidedto go bigger and better,” Marc ex-plained.This led to the Facebook group

Dare to Share through which theyservedmore food to people living onthe streets. The Walk the Walkproject is an effort to expose morepeople to the work Dare to Share isdoing.Their week on the streets started

last week Monday.The support from co-opTV, a

SouthAfrican online TV broadcast-er, meant Marc and Shane had twovideo diaries posted online eachday in which they reported back ontheir experiences and emotions.They themselves also recorded

additional video footage on their

cellphone.“I’m tired, hungry, exhausted

and mildly frustrated and it’s onlyday one at 15:30. We have tried do-ing a few things but are kept beingtold no, no. What if you are in thissituation for years and years andyou are kept being told no, by peo-ple who cosmetically seem to haveeverything, isn’t that where crimeand stealing comes from?” Markpondered on the first day.The first night they slept at a con-

struction site in Green Point.“It was miserably, miserably

cold, the temperature must havedropped below 10 degrees. We hadno cover and then the wind pickedup,” Shane said.During their travels through the

Atlantic Seaboard, Waterfront,CDB, Tamboerskloof, Milnerton,Blouberg, Table View, Bothasig,Bellville, Maitland, Salt River,Woodstock, and Camps Bay they

have learned much about peopleand surviving.“I have now been this side of the

tracks and seen how middle classSouth Africans treat those (street)people, it’s with minimal respect,”he said on Saturday evening.“The assumption we make when

we see someone on the street is thattheworth of their livesmight not beas much as ours. You don’t knowhow that person got to the positionthey are in. I am sure if themajorityof us faced the issues and realitiesthat these individuals faced wecould possibly be in a very similarposition,” he said.He said perception is lethal.“We met a lady who has been liv-

Two alert police men happened on adrug bust after noticing a group of sus-picious individuals along the road.Const Rowan Dowie and W/O Geor-

ge Kock were on patrol duties on Sa-turday 10 November on the N7,driving towards Malmesbury, whenthey noticed three men on the side ofthe road.One of the men was showing money

to the passing traffic in the hopes of se-curing a lift.As police searched the three men as

well as a Puma sports bag they had intheir possession they found 400 “Boss”Mandrax tablets. The street value ofthe drugs is currently unknown.A 24-year-old man from Vredendal

was arrested andwent before the CapeTown Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The proverbial cobwebs are multiplyingat Centre Point Shopping Centre, whichhas been standing empty for monthsnow.

The planned R260 million redevelopmentof the centre in Loxton Road has been post-poned again and again because the requirednumber of tenants haven’t yet signed thelease agreement.A minimum of 60 % of the tenants need to

commit and sign lease agreements beforedemolition can take place.The revamp first had to start in February,

then May, then September and to date noth-ing has been done.It is planned to first raze the current build-

ing to the ground.Actual construction on the “modern, con-

venient and air-conditioned mall” will thenstart three months later and it was initiallyforeseen that the project will finally be com-pleted by 30 March 2014.The client is the Government Employees

Pension Fund and the R260 million centrewill be administered by Public InvestmentCorporation (PIC).TygerBurger has received many queries

over the months and every time the leasingagent from Newton Commercial Properties,André Bauermeister, responded by sayingconstruction will start imminently.According to Bauermeister, 60 %of the re-

tail spacehas alreadybeenassigned to shopsand businesses, which includes Pick n Pay,Clicks, MTN, Crazy Store, Nedbank and Ab-sa.

Now PIC’s general properties manager,Lesiba Maloba, is singing from the samehymn sheet.“We anticipate completing lease agree-

ments with key tenants promptly and begin-ning the demolition and the rebuilding,” as-sures Maloba.ZanedeDecker, assetmanager of PIC, said

at the time that potential tenants are verypositive about the redevelopment of theCen-tre Point Shopping Centre and see the trans-formation as extremely promising for boththeir businesses and the surrounding areas.The residential space above will only be

sold much later in the process.The proposed redevelopment allows for

greener principles to be applied, includingpassive ventilation of service passages,south-facing glazing, naturally ventilatedparking – and it will promote greater aware-ness of energy use among both consumersand tenants.As a result the centre, once it is finally

completed, will be classed as a “four stargreen-rated shopping centre”.The shopping centre of 10 000 m² will com-

prise of two retail levels connectedbyescala-tor and the basement parking will be con-nected to the retail level by escalator.Parkingwould suffice for 400 customers at

a time.There will also be 42 apartments on three

levels above.It has also been reported before that this

centre will inject new life into the suburb.PIC is oneof the leading investors inSouth

Africa and is a shareholder in developmentssuch as the V&A Waterfront, CavendishSquare and Tyger Valley.

NB: Maitland meeting

As part of the city’s commitment to im-proving communication with all resi-dents, the launch of a new function on theSAP C3 fault reporting system has beenintroduced.

The launch of this function comes afterprevious occasions, when residents andbusinesses contacted the city call centreto report a fault or log a service request,and a reference number was given tele-phonically.

The lengthy number was often difficultto record if a resident was calling from ahands-free mobile device in their car ordid not have a pen and paper on hand.

Now, when customers contact the callcentre (086 010 3089), they are given theoption of receiving the reference numbervia SMS or email.

This option makes it more convenientto keep the reference number so that theycan follow up on outstanding requests.

This is the first of a two-phase initiativewhich the City of Cape Town’s customerrelations department completed success-fully last week.

In the second phase, the city will senda secondSMSor email to the complainantwhen the request has been dealt with andhas been closed on the SAP C3 system.

“In order to keep Cape Town a well-runcity, it is important that service requestsand logged faults are acknowledged andattended to timeously. This new systemwill ensure that residents have their ref-erence numbers easily at hand,” saidmayoral committee member for Corpo-rate Services Alderman Demetri Qually.

City gives high-tech reference

An upmarket security complex in Brooklynwas once again in the spotlight when threeresidents were recently arrested for the pos-session of drugs.

The South African Police Service’s FlyingSquad searched a house in the complex and dis-covered several kilogramsof tik andcocainewitha street value of R850 000.

This is the second similar incident in twomonths. In September the Flying Squad arresteda 23-year-old Zimbabwean woman when theyfound 444 Ecstasy tablets and 347,2 grams of co-caine with an estimated street value of R120 000

in her Palm Springs flat.Provincial Police spokesperson, Const Lybey

Swartz says they arrested one 27-year-old womanand two 30-year-old men.

Ripple Effect Property Management, the com-pany in charge of the complex, has apparentlybeen working hard to clean up Palm Springs.

In response to questionsposedbyTygerBurger,the management said: “The success of the hardwork can only be determined by successful drugbusts.

“We see these arrests as a positivemessage thatdrugs will not be tolerated in Palm Springs. Thepeople who were arrested for drug dealing werethe nanny of a tenant and her boyfriend. Theyhave been banned from the complex...”

Palm Springs ‘cleanup’

The City of Cape Town’s Law En-forcement Unit conducted its week-ly Zero Tolerance Operation in are-as such as Summer Greens, Sand-drift and Phoenix on Friday andissued 80 fines which amounts toR46 800.

Eighty-two officers, includingfour from Milnerton police, per-formed crime-deterring visible pa-trols andoperations in thenorthernareas.

Law Enforcement’s weekly ZeroTolerance Operations involve theincreased presence of uniformed of-ficers in identified areas, and is animportant integrated, crime-com-bating intervention.

The fines issued related to vari-ous traffic and bylaw contraven-tions such as unlicensed vehiclesand trading without a business li-cense.

These included: 11 fines totallingR5 500 for unlawful trading at inter-sections, 22 fines totalling R15 000for unlicensed motor vehicles, fourfines totalling R2 000 for unlawfullytrading on a sidewalk, five totallingR5 000 for trading without a busi-ness licence, one of R300 for urinat-ing in public, three totalling R1 500for unlawfully picking up passen-gers and eight totalling R2 400 forparking on a sidewalk.

In addition, various counterfeititems and goods relating to Infor-mal Trading contraventions wereseized and confiscated, and two for-eign nationalswere arrested for notbeing in possession of the requisitedocumentation.

The Animal Control Unit alsoheld an awareness operation inSummer Greens and facilitated theregistration of 46 dogs and 10 cats,distributed 150 animal registrationformsand impounded eight stray orunwanted dogs and one cat.

Following the successful implementa-tion of a pilot project which uses PVCpipe as bins for discarded fishing linealong the Overberg Gansbaai shoreline,beaches on the western, northern andeastern Cape Coast will soon have theirvery own bins where fishermen canthrow away their broken or used lines.

According to John Kieser, sustainabilitymanager for Plastics|SA, more than 150pipes were recently donated by DPI Plasticsfor the roll-out of the next phase of theproject.“The Dyer Island Conservation Trust, in

association with Overstrand Municipality,established the Fishing Line Recovery andRecycling Programme in 2010 as a best prac-tice withwhich tomanage the bins.We havereceived tremendous support from the pub-lic and the fishermen alsowelcomed this ini-tiative,” Kieser said.“We frequently see sea birds and marine

life trapped or killed as a result of fishingline that was not properly discarded and re-moved from our oceans or beaches,” Kiesersays. “Each year, the results of the Interna-tional Coastal CleanUp show that discardedfishing line continues to be amajor pollutanton our country’s beaches.“To this end we partnered with the South-

ern African Plastic Pipe Manufacturers As-sociation (Sappma) and one of its members,DPI Plastics, who provided funding and PVCpipes which are converted into bins that canbe erected on beaches, are resistant to the el-ements and corrosion and prevent the linesfrom blowing away.”Explaining the reason for the plastic pipe

industry’s support of the initiative, Sappmachairman Jan Venter said: “Discarded fish-ing material such as nets, mono filamentline, crayfish traps and anchor ropes are re-

sponsible for far more damage to large ma-rine life than any other marine debris foundat sea. We are proud to prove that plasticscan be used to the benefit of the environmentby donating plastic pipes that provide a tan-gible solution to a problem that needs an im-mediate answer,” he said.The project coordinators are calling on

volunteers to remove the fishing line andhooks from the bins on a regular basis.“We are hoping to eventually recycle the

The police are urging victims of a rentalscam in Table View to come forward tostrengthen their case against the manwho defrauded them.

Aman in his 40s fromTable Viewwas ar-rested after two separate charges wherelaid against him for fraudulently offeringflats for rent.“He advertises on Gumtree that he has

flats to rent, he then demands a deposit ofbetweenR4 000 andR5 000.He also providesa lease agreement, and when the tenantswant tomove in, the flat is already occupiedwith tenants,” Lieutenant Elizabeth Mun-ro, spokesperson for Table View police ex-

plained.“He either pretends to be the owner of the

flat or to be the representative for the own-er. He claims to be working with a Zimbab-wean national whose details are known tothe police,” Munro said.She said he makes use of the email ad-

dress [email protected] when ad-vertising on Gumtree.“We suspect there are more people out

Dit blyk die situasie rondom perlemoen-stropery in Melkbosstrand raak net er-ger.

Voorvalle van stropery het elke nag van1 tot 7 November voorgekom. Plaaslike wets-toepassingsowerhede glo hierdie tendenssal voortgaan aangesien die warm somer-weer meer geskik is vir duiktogte in die nag.

“Omdat die meeste van die stropery-voor-valle in en om die strandgebied en ook tus-sen die huise aan die seekant van Melkbos-strand plaasvind, hou dit ’n potensiële be-dreiging vir inwoners in,” het ’nverteenwoordiger van die Melkbosstrand-buurtwag gesê.

Weens kommer oor die veiligheid van in-woners en met die doel om die owerhede byte staan om stropery vas te vat, het die Melk-bosstrandse gemeenskapspolisieforum ’nteenstropery-subforum gestig.

Ná afloop van deurnagoperasies deur diénuwe teenstropery-eenheid, tesame met ledevan polisie en seevisserye, was daar onlangsheelwat sukses. Saterdagoggend is daar op

681 perlemoen beslag gelê. Vroeg die volgen-de oggend is drie verdagte stropers op diehoofstrand deur lede van die polisie in hegte-nis geneem toe hulle teen dagbreek uit diewater gekom het. Persone wat betrokke wilraak in die stryd teen stropery met sken-kings vir toerusting of wil help bewaak, ofinligting het, kan 076 583 0270 skakel.

Perlemoenstropery raak nou net erger

Lede van die Melkbosstrandpolisie sorteerdie perlemoenwaarop daar onlangs beslag gelê is.

Grass issue out of controlI am glad that finally some attention hasbeen given to the poor state of our parks.I have been living in Stellenberg for over

30 years and the neighbourhood has neverbeen as neglected as lately.The grass issue is out of control.The neglect of the parks, canals and corri-

dors has been going on for many years, eversince the Cape Town Government out-sourced these maintenance services.It would appear that the procurement of

these services is done by a team of unprofes-sional employeeswithin theCapeTownGov-ernment.In all probability the city’s park adminis-

trators have no real power to do anythingand must deal with what has been “dishedout” to them.The budget allowed for the parks mainte-

nance seems very healthy but how efficient-ly it is being administrated is anothermatterentirely. Outsourcing is the name of game inthese days, but it also opensmanyopportuni-ties for corruption.Inmy experience I find thatMr Afrika has

The South African cancer information hubhas launched their “Wear your lung onyoursleeve” initiative for Lung Cancer Aware-ness Month (November).

Modelled after the phrase, “wear yourheart on your sleeve”, the initiative aims toencourage people to do their bit to createawareness.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancerdeath globally and is the second most com-mon cause of cancer deaths in southern Af-rica with 1,18 million people dying eachyear. Many people associate lung cancerwith smoking but according to research,25 % of people with lung cancer have neversmoked.

Furthermore, research has shown thatlung cancer is no longer a male-dominateddisease either and that there has been alarge increase in the number of women whoare developing this type of cancer as well.

‘Wear yourlung on yoursleeve’ month

A squash player from Milnerton won theinaugural Nelson Mandela MetropolitanUniversity (NMMU) Open.

SA Top 10 player and Milnerton SquashClub’s number 1 player, GaryWheadon, tra-velled to PE to play in the tournament, thelast event on the calendar of the South Afri-can circuit.

After a fairly comfortable path to the se-mi-finals, he faced another SA top 10 player,Rudi Willemse.

After losing the first game, Gary startedto find his rhythm and was then difficult tostop as he won the next three games.

The final saw Gary taking on current SAnumber 5 and former number 1, AdrianHansen.

Gary was in fine form as he took the firsttwo games. Adrian fought back in thethird,but this took its toll on him physicallyas Gary dominated the fourth and sealedvictory and the title with a 3-1 win.

Ablistering south-easter pumpingat 65 km/h not only saw a record number of entriesin last week’s Primi Naish Downwind Dashbut also led to a whole host of personal besttimes.

A group of 50 stand up paddlers and 40surfskiers lined up last Wednesday at Mil-nerton beach for a record field in the fourthround of the 2012 Primi Naish DownwindDash Series.

Conditions where close to epic with thestrongestwinds and biggest runners seen sofar this year.

In total 42 out of the 50 paddlers set a per-sonal best time.

The fourth completed race means every-one gets a discard in the overall standings,and Chris Bertish maintains his lead overDylan Frick and Greg Bertish.

A local rider will be among the top parti-cipants at the Investec FEI World CupShowJumpingQualifier thatwill beheldin Cape Town this year.

Thomas Mbalula from the Thandeka Sta-bles in Duynefontein is the most accom-plished black South African rider and willcompete during the event that will be heldat the Glenellen Farm in Hout Bay from 21to 25 November.

Thomas recently competed as a reservememberof theWesternProvinceTeamat theInterprovincial Team Eventing Champion-ships held at Arlington Race Course in PortElizabeth on 3 and 4 November.

This was an historic moment for South Af-rican Eventing as Thomas achieved his am-bition to be the first black rider to competeat FEI1 level.

“The best thing about this show was beinga part of the Western Province team. Every-one has been so supportive. And to comehere and have a good ride,” a delighted Tho-mas said after the PE show.

The upcoming World Cup qualifier is or-ganised by the newly formed Cape TownEquestrian. This is the only internationalshow jumping competition in Cape Townand forms the last leg of the South AfricanSeries of the FEI World Cup Jumping Cham-pionship.

The type of jumps that feature on thecourse are a challenge to these top nationalriders, offering the audience an opportunityto experience the close bond existing be-tween horse and rider as they ride thecourse.

The classes are closely contested and, withmore than 142 riders already entered, therewill be much to interest visitors.

Entrance is free for Wednesday to Friday,tickets for Saturday and Sunday are R20 andcan be booked via Computicket. The Glenel-len Farm showgrounds are situated on West-erford Way, off Valley Road, Hout Bay.
