to serve him well in his efforts to fight crime in the Milnerton

    area.

Du Preez, owner of the Ford Cortina Centre in Brooklyn was

fed up with the crime and deterioration of the area around his

Teddymania: A whopping 60 teddies were collected at a Poker Shuffle reunion evening

in aid of charity at Ilha Restaurant and Bar in Milnerton recently. The initiative by Deon

Joubet, Amalia das Neves, Stefano Kruger and Malcolm Stockdale saw 38 players arriving,

each willing to pay an entry fee of a teddy bear. The eventual winner was Stockdale, with

Gavin Paulse coming second and Mike Barfoot third.

    New laws: buckle up kids

In South Africa, 250 children are killed on

the road each year because someone didnt

buckle them up causing the Western Cape

    government to consider various legislation

    in this regard.

According to statistics, more than twice as

many children die as pedestrians. Further-

more road crashes in South Africa claim the

highest mortality in the age group one to 18

    years worldwide.

But this could be prevented by parents

who opt to buckle their children up.

To this end, Childsafe, and the manage-

ment of Red Cross Childrens Hospital, last

week launched their Buckle-up or youll be

back campaign in an effort to raise aware-

ness as to the dangers of not buckling-up

    when driving, particularly when driving

    with children in the vehicle.

Children are among the most vulnerable

on our roads, both as passengers and pedes-

trians. Through our Safely Home initiative,

we will be gearing up our enforcement and

educational efforts during the upcoming fes-

tive season to reduce the carnage on our

roads. Last year, 139 lives were lost on the

provinces roads during the festive season,

with pedestrians and passengers making up

the bulk of that number, says Minister of

Transport in the Western Cape Robin Car-

    lisle.

Appropriate restraints are a crucial ele-

ment in child road safety. The national sta-

tistics in terms of restraints, particularly for

children, are shocking. In 2010, it was ob-

served that 92 % of back-seat passengers (in-

cluding children) were not wearing seat-

    belts.

According to Carlisle, the province is cur-

rently looking into child restraints regula-

tions that would ban shared seating and

mandate the use of seatbelts, rear and for-

ward facing child seats, and booster seats,

as appropriate to age with harsh penalties

    for non-compliance.

The introduction of an additional offence

for reckless behaviour with children in the

vehicle, such as speeding, drunk driving or

    cellphone use, is being considered.

The penalties for this offence would in-

crease exponentially should the child not be

    correctly restrained, he says.

Children bear much of the brunt of the

slaughter on the roads, with hundreds killed

senselessly per annum, and legislation can

play a strong role in protecting them.

Since 2008, until the end of 2011, passenger

and pedestrian fatalities have decreased by

    18 %and27 %respectively. Passenger fatali-

ties have gone down from 415 in 2008, to 339

    in 2011.

Pedestrian fatalities have gone down from

    843 in 2008 to 619 in 2011.

    Passengers and pedestrians occupy the

largest percentage of the total fatalities in

the province, and a high number are child-

    ren.

Milnertons Eric Miles Cheshire Home will

be cutting their electricity bill by approxi-

mately 40 % when it goes green this Feb-

    ruary.

The local home for disabled residentswill

not only be harvesting the advantages of

green energy, but it will also be instrumen-

tal in an experiment which will illustrate

the economic sense of pursuing this envi-

    ronmentally friendly option.

The home has received grant funding

    from theEnergy andEnvironment Partner-

ship Programme (EEP) for the project.

As a result, the home will install a 45-50

kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system on its

    predominantly north-facing roof, which

will ultimately save them between R7 000

    and R8 000 a month.

The home currently provides care for 45

    quadriplegic and paraplegic residents of

mixed race and spends an average of

    R20 000 a month on electricity.

Manager Alet Bosman says that the

project is part of an ongoing drive by them

to reduce the amount of energy consumed

as well as reducing operating costs. Other

energy savings projects include the instal-

lation of heat pumps, which reduce energy

consumption by up to 35 % and taking part

    inEskoms compact fluorescent lamp (CFL)

    exchange programme.

Project developer, Karen van der Wath,

elaborates: It is envisaged to up-scale and

    install solarPVat all 18CheshireHomes sit-

uated throughout South Africa by sourcing

    Fire guts shacks, displacing 250

    ANDR BAKKES

Some 250 people living in informal settle-

ments were displaced after two fires broke

    out Saturday morning.

The less serious of the two fires ravaged

six shacks in the Doornbach informal settle-

ment near Milnerton, displacing 10 people.

Just a few hours before a fire destroyed 60

shacks and displaced 240 people in a south-

    ern informal settlement.

    According to Wilfred Solomons-Johannes

    of theDisasterRiskManagementCentre, no-

one was seriously injured in either fire.

The City of Cape Towns disaster re-

sponse teamswere on the scene and assisted

the fire victimswith food parcels, hotmeals,

    clothing, blankets and building material,

    Solomons-Johannes says.

    TheoLayne, spokesperson for theFire and

    Rescue Services, told TygerBurger yester-

day that it is unclear at this stage what

    caused the fire in Doornbach.

This newspaper recently published an ar-

ticle entitled Two die in shack fire, cause

unknown inwhich the dangers of fire in in-

    formal settlements were touched upon.

    Solomons-Johannes was quoted as saying

that the disaster Risk Management Centre

is intensifying its public awareness and

preparedness sessions to educate the public

    to prevent fires.

Layne nowadds to this by saying that they

focus on educating the community leaders

about hazards of building shacks too close

    to one another.

This is one of our biggest challenges

when responding to a fire in an informal set-

    tlement, says Layne.

We end up using long hoses to get to the

fire, and besides the extra time this takes,

the pressure on the hoses is also very high.

Fires can spread very quickly in informal

    settlements and every second counts.

He emphasises that people who live in

shacks be mindful about leaving enough

space between them and their neighbours.

Some areas are just one mass of shacks,

    exclaims Layne.

Headmits that its a challenge to overcome

this contentious issue, but he is confident

    that theyre making headway.

The official launch of the Copperheads K-9

Unit took place on Thursday 22 November,

    where a short introductory demonstration

as to how the sniffer dogswill operate in the

    field, was presented.

Four members of the MTU (Cape Towns

Metals Theft Unit) were recently sent on a

four-week dog handlers course, and as a re-

sult are now fully qualified dog handlers.

The two dogs that will be assisting the of-

ficers were trained through a variety of ex-

ercises that aim to simulate conditions they

will be experiencing in the field and will in-

    still a sense of obedience.

The handlers were trained in terms of

how to bondwith the dog, how to handle the

dog off the leash, and how to issue com-

    mands to the dogs.

To offer an idea of just how effective they

can be, a humans sense of smell relies on

an area of membrane the size of a postage

stamp inadog this is the size of anA4 sheet

    of paper.

This keen sense of smell will allow the

dogs to find stolen copper even with the in-

    troduction of disguising odours.

The process, which was initiated by the

head of the unit, Assistant Chief Neil

Arendse, wasmeant to aid the officers in de-

tecting stolen copper and aluminium cable.

This event should be seen as an historic

moment for the citys law enforcement ser-

vices, said JP Smith, mayoral committee

    member for safety and security.

Specialist dogs work in a variety of law

    enforcement and military functions, detec-

ting awide range of specific scents that they

    havebeen trained to recognise,he continu-

    ed.

Detecting the presence of copper is just

onemore field inwhich they excel. With the

aid of these newmembers, the Metals Theft

Unit will now be able to search for copper

in a variety of concealed locations, he said.

So the word is out for copper thieves: Be-

ware, thenoose just got tighter. Thenextno-

se that sticks itself into your (illegal) busi-

ness might be a cold and wet one.

V To report copper theft to Eskom, phone

    0800 112 722 or phone Telkom on 0800 124 000.

    Porky and Pooch, a

    strange love affair

I only have eyes for you. Pepper the great

Dane and Basil the potbelly pig share a

special bond that transcends their differen

    ces. PHOTO: LEON STEENKAMP

    LEON STEENKAMP

They spend their days traipsing the dusty

grounds of the scrapyard they call home,

but it is at night that love flourishes be-

tween the unlikely pairing of Pepper the

great Dane and Basil the potbelly pig.

Those two are in love. You have never

seen anything like it, says Leon du Preez,

owner of the Ford Cortina Centre in Brook-

lyn, Table View where these two animals

I used to have four other dogs here but

when Basil arrived I had to remove them.

If any of the other dogs came near him, Pep-

    per attacked them, Leon explains.

By day the exuberant and very loving

Pepper is confined to her kennel in the cor-

ner of the premises, as Basil scuffs and

snouts around the sea of car wrecks in the

    yard.

The two-year-old Basil was introduced to

Pepper when Leon adopted him about a

    year ago.

He was a pet of friends of ours, a Jewish

family. He grew up with six dogs and lived

on their verandah. When the daughter left

home, they didnt want him any more and

I brought him here, Leon says.

And since then the relationship between

the canine and the porker has blossomed.

Where other dogsmight have looked at Bas-

il and seen next Christmass lunch, Pepper

was infatuated by the new addition to her

    home.

They do everything together, they sleep

and eat together. I havenever seen apig and

dog like that, says Leons wife Nikky.

A pig at a scrapyard and automotive shop

is also a delightful surprise for Leons cus-

tomers. Basil is well-known tomy custom-

ers. One of the things they like doing is to

put a Ford cap on his head and then take

a photo. And he loves it, he says.

    Gedagtes wanneer jy

    broos en onseker voel

    N

Mens se lewe is nie net een

gelyk lyn van emosie en gevoel

nie.

Hoe maak n mens wanneer jy onseker

en bang is? Hier is n paar gedagtes vir

wanneer jy broos en onseker voel:

V Elke probleem het n einde. Daar

Nou moet jy egter

hulp kry, planne maak en fokus op

konkrete stappe om jou probleme aan te

    spreek. Positiewe energie word vrygestel

wanneer jy jou fokus wegskuif van jou

    mistroostige omstandighede.

V Leef gesond. n Mens neig soms om

midde-in n krisis nie jou gesondheid op

te pas nie. Jou gesondheid is belangrik

om jou deur die storms te dra.

V Leef eenvoudig. Soms maak ons die

lewe te ingewikkeld en het ons meer

stiltes en eenvoudige dinge in die lewe

nodig. Vind dus in moeilike tye weer die

    basiese lewensbeginsels van jou menslike

bestaan en sny die fieterjasies uit.

V Verander jou lewe.

Wanneer

    jy ongehoorsaam is, word gehoorsaam.

Wanneer jy op skuld lewe, hou op skuld

    maak. Wanneer jy humeurige geaardheid

    het, word bedagsaam.

V Kry berading. Moenie skaam wees

om hulp te soek nie. Berading help jou

om van angstigheid en vrese verligting te

    kry en oplossings te vind.

V Leef dankbaarheid. S weer dankie

vir die klein dingetjies in die lewe.

Moenie so puntenerig en krities oor alles

    hierdie groot, wye wreld.

V Weet God is in beheer. Soms voel

    persoonlike lewe.

Ons hoop l uiteindelik tog daarin dat

ons sal weet God is in beheer, ondanks al

    die onseker en brose tye.

    FREE-RANGE THINKING

    Tony Robinson

    End is nigh for dirty

    little petrol engines

    I

t may come as something of a

surprise to learn that even the

worst Eskom power station is twice

as efficient as your car. Even if you

    drive a Porsche!

It works like this. Both the power

station and your car burn fuel and

use the resulting heat to create

    mechanical energy. The efficiency is

    measured by comparing the heat

    actually converted into mechanical

energy with the waste heat, which in

the case of Eskom, is returned to the

atmosphere via its smoke stacks and

    giant cooling towers.

When I briefly studied heat engines

a long time ago, the thermal efficiency

of a petrol engine was given as 14%,

diesels were 18% and steam engines

    25%. Petrol engines were preferred

because they were easy to start and

    more versatile.

    There have been many improve-

ments over the years. Metal alloys are

    lighter, lubrication is better, ignition

    systems, valve gear and engine

    management have been transformed

and the result is engines that now run

at a thermal efficiency of about 20%.

Thats in cruise mode. In traffic, the

overall efficiency drops to about 15%.

This means 15% of the heat generat-

ed by burning the petrol becomes

    useful energy while 85% becomes

waste heat to be dumped into the

atmosphere. The really dirty stuff goes

out through the exhaust and is so

poisonous that the fumes have become

a preferred option for unhappy people

    who want to commit suicide.

If the petrol engine were invented

    today its inefficiency and lethal

    emissions would ensure its immediate

    banning.

The real miracle of the motor car is

    that their complicated motors with

dozens of moving, wearing parts have

become so reliable. More reliable than

    Eskom!

One can understand why the oil

    companies were prepared to tolerate

machines with a 15% efficiency rating

but whats your excuse? How did we

all get suckered into accepting what

    Churchill called the infernal combus-

    tion engine when, better cleaner

motors have been around for a

    century?

Yes, the future is electric for we

now have the batteries to power cars

that can outperform the old models

with their suck, squeeze, bang blow

    motors.

    Unfortunately the petrolheads and

the motor industry hate the clean,

silent electric cars that never need oil

changes, new spark plugs or tune-ups.

On the other hand, Tesla Motors is

building the first pure electric car

and, despite the high price, they cant

    make them fast enough.

If you dont believe me have a look

    at www.teslamotors.com and you will

    see the future.

    HIGH FIREHIGH FIRE

    Yellow lane cause of crash

The accident scene on the N1 near Century City last week Thursday severely impacted traffic for

    close to two hours.

    ANDR BAKKES

It is suspected by police that the cause of the

horrendous accident on the N1 last week

Thursday came as a direct result of the driv-

er of the Huyndai travelling inside the yel-

    low lane.

    Goodwood Police spokesperson, W/O

Wayne Theunis, confirmed that they are in-

vestigating a culpable homicide case against

    the 45-year-old driver.

The accident, which killed one person and

seriously injured eight others, happened at

    14:20 near Century City.

    Theunis elaborates: AwhiteHyundai col-

lided with a stationery construction truck

after it allegedly drove inside the yellow

line. The impact threw a number of con-

    struction workers off the truck.

    The 38-year-old deceased man apparently

landed about 30 metres away from the point

    of impact.

    ER24s spokesperson, Andre Visser, adds

that the flatbed construction truck with a

load of steel Armco barriers was stationery

in the right side emergency lane of the high-

    way.

Says Visser: The female driver of the Hy-

undai had to be extricated from the vehicle

    before paramedics administered advanced

life support. The woman had sustained seri-

ous injuries, which included suspected back

and neck injuries, as well as a severe head

injury. She was later rapidly transported to

    a nearby medical facility.

He adds the man that died sustained vari-

ous fatal injuries and was declared dead at

    the scene.

    The remaining seven construction work-

ers had all sustained various injuries, which

included suspected back and neck injures

and various cuts and bruises. They received

treatment at the scene before being trans-

ported to nearby hospitals by various ambu-

    lances.

Traffic on the N1 highway was affected in

both directions for close to two hours while

    emergency medical services, rescue person-

nel and local law enforcement officials at-

    tended the scene.

    ANDR BAKKES

After the fire consumed everything his fami-

ly owned, Thinus Campher (35) stood in the

smouldering ashes of devastation and ex-

    claimed: Praise the Lord!

The Ou Skip Resorts caravan, which has

until recently been the Campher familys

home, burnt down early Saturday morning.

The family of five Thinus, Barbara (35),

    Eliska (13), Mandr (12) and Beulah (9)

were housesitting a home of friends inMelk-

bosstrand when the flames destroyed their

    lives.

Both Thinus and his wife have been look-

ing forwork formonths, so this is just anoth-

er tragedy which has befallen them.

He does, however, see the positive in the

situation. Since the fire started in the tent

by the caravan door, the possibility exists

that his family might otherwise have been

    killed.

That very evening Barbara wanted to go

back to the caravan, but Thinus convinced

her to stay at the house in Melkbosstrand.

One of the managers at Ou Skip Resort,

Ren Steenkamp, says that the fire depart-

ment inspector told her it could have been

an electrical fault or even arson.

Thinus says he knows exactly who caused

it: I will stop asking why, why, why! It was

an evil attack. The devil caused it. Beyond

that, who is to blame? I cant be stuck asking

this question over and over or I will end up

in a negative pool of muck!

His traumatic experience will most likely

    live with him forever...

At 05:30 our neighbour in the caravan re-

    sort phonedme. Shewashysterical. Immedi-

atelywhen I heard that the caravan is on fire

    I started praying, recounts Thinus.

He got into the car and raced over to the

resort, which was just three kilometres

    away.

As he approached the resort he could see

    heavy smoke hanging over it.

    Itwasquite depressingknowing thats all

    your stuff burning!

I didnt stop praying... Lord! Help me!

    Help me!

When he arrived at the scene of shattered

dreams he was overwhelmed when he saw

    the flames.

I never knew flames could get that big...

And all this happened in the rain!

Within seconds the fire department ar-

rivedon the scene.Their efforts and the light

rain prevented the flames from spreading to

    other caravans.

Now there is nothing left but challenges.

I went to the site the next day and I tried

to salvage something in the rubble, but there

    was nothing...

The resort has offered the family alterna-

tive accommodation in the park, but Thinus

says that this would be too traumatic for the

    family.

Other caring people have since also come

to the familys aid by donating food and

    clothes.

The biggest seed of hope that filled Thi-

nuss heart with encouragement was when

a nine-year-old girl walked up to him and

gave him R20 in change of her ownmoney.

To all those who have contributed I want

them to know we are very, thankful.

The family still needs all the help they can

get, but Thinus doesnt lose heart.

We will receive a miracle, he adds.

V He has vast experience in the IT business and Bar

bara in financial administration, but despite sending

CVs out all over the country they have not found jobs

yet. If anyone can help, contact Thinus on

    079 085 2295 or Barbara on 079 776 0990.

met hoe sy gevorder het. Sy is ons wonder-

werkie. As jy net in haar ogies kyk, danweet

dra. So hoe gouer sy die inplantings kry, hoe

    beter sal dit wees.

    DieSummerFunDay-geldinsamelingspro-

jek sal plaasvind op Saterdag 8 Desember by

    die Tygerberg-natuurreservaat. Almal is

welkom.

Daar

sal eetgoed te koop wees soos worsrolletjies

en potjiekos, tee, koffie en heerlike soetgoed.

V Vir meer inligting, bel Jorrie Jordaan by 072 252

    Bellville: Vanjaar gaan

    ek saam met my krel

    Sedgefield toe. Ons

    was laasjaar nie saam

    nie, toe besluit ons

    om vanjaar Kersfees

    saam deur te bring.

    Ek sal dus di

    Kersfees n bietjie weg

    van die huis wees.

    Deidr Stassen van

    Plattekloof: Ons sal

    weer saamkuier by

    my suster se huis in

    Panorama. Ek en my

    man het steeds albei

    ons ouers en dis

    belangrik om Kersdag

    saam met hulle te

    deel. Ons trek

    gewoonlik name en

    dan koop ons

    geskenke vir die naam

    wat getrek was.

    Sylvester Booysen

    van Ravensmead:

    Ons hou elke jaar n

    groot ete. Dis tradisie.

    Ons trek gewoonlik

    iemand se naam, dan

    koop jy vir daardie

    persoon n geskenk.

    Ons hele familie kuier

    saam. Dis belangrik

    vir ons, want jy kry

    nie baie tyd geduren

    de die jaar nie.

    Eben de Bod

    van Kraaifon

    tein: Elke

    Oukersaand

    maak ons

    geskenke oop

    voor die

    Kersboom. Dis

    meer vir die

    kinders en

    tradisie.

    Laetitia Indombe

    van Parow: Ek sal

    Johannesburg toe

    gaan en my Kersfees

    saam met vriende

    deurbring. Ons braai

    gewoonlik en ek

    koop net geskenke

    vir my naaste

    vriende. My familie is

    in die Kongo.

    Freddie Panter

    van Tableview:

    Ons vriende en

    familie kom

    hierdie jaar van

    Johannesburg. Ons

    gaan vir hulle

    bietjie die Kaap

    wys. Ons sal

    beslis Tafelberg

    toe. Op Oukers

    aand het ons

    gewoonlik n

    familieete by die

    huis.

    Zo Jooste van

    Bellville: Ek gaan

    Kersfees deurbring

    by my ouma en

    oupa se huis. Ons

    eet elke Kersfees

    daar. Ek wil hierdie

    jaar n fiets h vir

    Kersfees.

    Jackson Steli

    van Kuilsriver:

    Ons gaan vir die

    afgelope drie

    jaar Strand toe

    op Kersdag. By

    die huis eet ons

    net en dan is

    dit verby. As

    ons Strand toe

    gaan, is daar

    darem iets wat

    die hele familie

    saam doen en

    geniet.

    Asiphe Nombewu

    van Delft: Ons gaan

    elke Kersdag kerk toe

    en dan kuier ons

    hele familie saam.

    Die geskenke is nie

    vir ons belangrik nie.

    Om tyd saam deur

    te bring is belangri

    ker. Gewoonlik gaan

    kuier ons in die

    OosKaap by familie,

    maar vanjaar sal

    hulle na ons toe kom

    in Kaapstad.

    Jonathan Laban van

    Ravensmead: Ons

    kuier gewoonlik op

    Oudtshoorn op

    Kersdag, want ons

    het familie daar. Ek

    werk heeldag op

    Kersdag en sal graag

    dit saam met my

    familie wou spandeer.

    Dit sal n gewone dag

    vir my wees.

    Woensdag, 28 November 2012

    Beste uit jou

    geweste in n

    nuwe baadjie

jare. In die algemeen het ons probeer om

die uitleg minder swaar te maak. Ons

    het moderne, ligter lettertipes gekies,

van onnodige lyne ontslae geraak en

meer orde probeer skep. Dit behoort die

koerant in die algemeen ook meer

    leesbaar te maak.

Ons het vir weke geswoeg om die

template te finaliseer en te oefen sodat

alles op spertyd glad sal verloop. En hier

is ons nuwe baba n ons trots, nou in jou

    mooi voorkoms, asook soos gewoonlik

As I serve on the traffic portfolio of the Table

View Ratepayers Association and am therefore

radio-linked within the Table View Neighbour-

hood Watch, I regularly hear about the most

horrific accidents, in residential areas or the

    surrounding roads in Table View.

Seeing people die and the horrific injuries

they succumb to, is unbelievable. People have no

entitlement to drive 60 km/h in our residential

    areas.

There are residents, who want to get out of

their driveways, animals in the roads, children

playing and cars parked. We have no right to

drive 60 km/h in these areas.

I urge you to slow down if you are in situa-

tions like these. Give right of way in traffic

    circles.

Slow down, look to your left or right, the

circle does not mean the one who drives the

fastest has the right of way, it means slow down.

It is also not necessary to speed down Wood

Drive, Janssens Road, Raats Drive or North

Road as though it is a speedtrack, it is a resi-

    dential area.

Just because you live in West Beach or

Parklands, does not mean you may use the

Table View feeder routes as a speedtrack.

Speeding in Sandown Road and Parklands

Main Road is an equally big problem.

How many more horrific accidents must we

see there? Access to the Beach road area is

    allowed for everyone.

This does not mean that when you are on Otto

du Plessis road, you should not slow down and

give other motorists a chance. How many more

horrible accidents must we see this season? I

applied through the CPF, to drive a zero toler-

ance on traffic offences and reckless driving.

Meanwhile I appeal to the motorists to behave.

    ALEX LEPNIK

    Table View

    Not entitled to speed

lings. Die mense kan by hierdie plekke gehelp

    word.

    ANON

    Wil sonder sakdoek rondloop

08:00 gerapporteer as dringend.

iemand anders kon seerkry. Dit is n baie besige

straat gedurende die dag. Groot was my verba-

drag. Die gereelde skuldiges is gewoonlik

taxi-bestuurders.

tuie, wat brandende sigaretstompies by hul

Mense kan nou by n ontspanningsfasili-

baar in 14 ander lande.

ka.

My vrou

en kinders geniet self die Cube. My kinders

is ook baie lief vir musiek.

    Therewill be aMotor ShowExtrava-

    ganza onSaturday 8December at the

    Sarepta Sports ground, Mission

    Road, Kuils River.

Gates will open at 12:00. Entrance

fee is R10 per person andR10 per car.

    A manufacturers display will be

held by Toyota, Hyundai, Top End,

Renault and manymore. All car and

motorbike clubs are welcome for a

club display for which trophies will

    be awarded.

A Showand Shine, plus Sound and

Rev-off by the Boyz Toyz will form

part of the days activities. Food

    stalls, a mini-fair and a cash bar

    available.

Quad bike rides are also available.

    Stalls are available.
