hey are going to shoot me; I want
to go to my mommy! These are
reportedly the words uttered by
a young girl from Joe Slovo amid violent
taxi protests which rocked the settlement
last week.
The drama unfolded on Tuesday morn-
ingwhen rioting taxi drivers hurled stones
and burned tyres and bins.
A taxi driver toldTygerBurger theywere
protesting about the roll-out of new
MyCiTi routes.
Speaking to TygerBurger after the pro-
tests, Phoenix residents raised the alarm
saying they feared for their safety. They
claim the problems started long before
Tuesday and say over the weekend taxi
drivers could be seen congregating in an
open field in Phoenix.
Residents say Phoenix and Joe Slovo res-
idents were terrified as shots rang and ve-
hicles were burned. Due to the close prox-
imity of the two areas, many residents
spent the night gripped in fear as tyres
burned and tear gas filled the air.
According to them the young girl from
Joe Slovo was found crying, walking
through Phoenix streets, and was assisted
by a resident who walked with the young
girl to Joe Slovo amid the riot.
While residents in surrounding areas
found alternative routes to work and
school, Phoenix residents say they were
caught in the middle.
We were sitting ducks. There was no
way we could avoid the riots and our lives
came to a standstill as we couldnt get in
or out. What everybody doesnt realise is
that amid all of this innocent people in Joe
Slovo and Phoenix are suffering. It was on-
ly a very small percentage of people, yet the
majority of us suffer, says a Phoenixman.
AMarsRoad resident says childrenwere
most affected and says his own daughter
was traumatised. We could hear the cars
being stoned and the loud shouting. It was
horrible. How are we supposed to explain
this to our children? We were too scared
to leave our homes.
During the protests the City of Cape
Town reported the attack on the Phoenix
MyCiTi station.

heN7 highwaywas shut down over the
weekend amid an attempted land inva-
sion. The drama unfolded shortly after
noon on Saturday when motorists reported
seeing Dunoon residents trying to invade
land along the highway.
Milnerton police cluster spokesperson
Constable Henry du Randt explains at
around 09:00 about 200 residents occupied
private property as well as land owned by
the City of Cape Town. The Citys Anti-land
Invasion Unit dismantled the structures
and Du Randt says the crowd began throw-
ing stones at police and making fires.
Police responded by firing rubber bullets.
TygerBurger arrived at the scene on the
N7 shortly after noon and witnessed resi-
dents marking out plots. Residents refused
to be interviewed but said they were fed up
with government and needed land for hous-
es. They told TygerBurger they were mark-
ing the areas and would return the next day
to build.TygerBurger received several false
reports about violence along the highway
while on the scene.
Shortly after 18:00,TygerBurgeraccompa-
nied Du Randt to the N7 which at this stage
hadbeen shut downwithmotorists diverted
through Table View and Richwood. Riot po-
lice were patrolling the highway and con-
tained the protest inside Dunoon. The
shouts of protesters could be heard as thick
clouds of smoke from burning tyres hung
over the highway.
DuRandt then proceeded toMilnerton po-
lice station where senior police officers met
to discuss how to tackle the protest. Here
more than 30 Metro Police officers geared
up in the parking lot ready to enter Dunoon.
Milnerton police spokesperson Warrant
Officer Daphne OReilly says on Saturday
four people aged between 38 and 46 were ar-
rested for public violence.
Thiswas followedbyanadditional five ar-
rests on Sunday. She says reports indicate
that four people tried to burn down the com-
munity hall in Waxberry Street.
According to a statement by the City of
Cape Town, a group of protesters linked to
an illegal land grab in Dunoon attacked and
vandalised the MyCiTi Dunoon station in
Potsdam Road on Sunday at about 16:30.
The Mayco member for transport, Brett
Herron, says commuters and a security
guard fled the scene when protesters threw
rocks and objects at the station building,
causing damage to the glass panels and exte-
rior of the building.
Nobody was injured during the attack,
but the T01 and T04 services along Potsdam
Road were suspended for the rest of the
evening with buses turning around at the
Potsdam station. Police and Law Enforce-
ment officers were on the scene, closing
Potsdam Road to traffic at the intersection
with Blaauwberg Road as from 17:00 on-
wards.
This, he said, was the secondattack in five
days on MyCiTi station infrastructure.
There is absolutely no excuse for this
criminal and thuggish behaviour. The ex-
tent of the damage to both stations is still
being assessed and the costs will be deter-
mined in due course, save to say that those
who will suffer the most are the communi-
ties of Dunoon and Joe Slovo who will not
be able to use the Dunoon and Phoenix sta-
tions for a number of weeks while the build-
ings are repaired.
On Monday the T01 and T04 services re-
turned to normal, with buses stopping at the
Usasaza andKillarney stations. Commuters
fromDunoon are advised to use theUsasaza
station for the time being.
Buses operating alongRouteT04 fromDu-
noon to Century City, are still being deviat-
ed along Racecourse Road, into Koeberg
Road, onto Bosmansdam Road and into
Ratanga Road, as the Phoenix station is not
operational.

FROM PAGE 1
According to a statement released by City
of Cape Town Mayco member for trans-
port, Brett Herron, the attack on the sta-
tion was reported to Milnerton police.
Furthermore, a MyCiTi bus operating
along Route 251 (Century City, Montague
Gardens) was stoned in Montague Drive
at around 09:30 this morning (Tuesday 15
March). Thankfully, nobody was injured.
There is absolutely no excuse for this
criminal behaviour. The City will assist
in whatever way we can to identify the
perpetrators. A criminal case has been
opened and the local police station inMil-
nerton is investigating these incidents. I
am confident that those responsible will
be apprehended.
The extent of the damage to the station
is still being assessed and the costs will
be determined in due course.
The Phoenix station will be closed for
at least two to threeweeks. This is a huge
inconvenience to the approximately 1200
commuters who make use of this station
on a daily basis.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer
Daphne OReilly said one case of mali-
cious damage to property (Phoenix sta-
tion) and three cases of public violence
were opened last week.
In the first of three public violence cas-
es, a docket was opened on Monday 14
March after a taxi driver reported he was
blocked off by a Quantum taxi in Monta-
gue Drive. He was surrounded by eight
taxi drivers participating in the riot and
robbed him of his money.
Later the afternoon the vehicle was
spotted by Metro Police members who
pulled over the vehicle. Three suspects
ran away. OReilly says Metro Police
members apprehended one of the taxi
drivers and he is currently in custody.
He is facing charges of robbery and the
search continues for the other suspects.
On the same day, another taxi driver re-
ported being robbed and his taxi damaged
while driving it near Summer Greens.
On Tuesday 15 March a docket was
opened following the burning of a truck
and the hurling of stones on the corner of
Freedom and Democracy ways.
Milnerton police opened a third public
violence case onThursday 17Marchwhen
a taxi driver started spinning the wheels
of his taxi and obstructed other motorists
in Omuramba Road.
MetroPolice approachedhimandused
their siren to get him to move. Three sus-
pects then started throwing stones at the
Metro Police vehicle and officers fired
three warning shots. The suspects ran
away.
OReilly says various robbery cases
were opened following attacks on taxi
drivers who continued to operate during
the protest.
The protests were also a hot topic in the
Blaauwberg subcouncil meeting last
week as Dunoon ward councillor Lubaba-
lo Makaleni says parents are concerned
about school children being prevented
from accessing public transport. In addi-
tion he says taxi drivers tried to convince
community leaders in Dunoon to join.
They wanted to bring Dunoon to a
standstill, but we told them they couldnt
do that.
The Goodwood Library will once again
host a jam-packed holiday programme.
Tomorrow (Thursday) there will be
Easter stories and treats, next Tuesday is
autumn craft day, Thursday will be face
painting and stories and on Monday 4
April a puppet show.

able View residents have launched a
scathing attack on the City of Cape
Town accusing senior politicians of
political grand standing when comment-
ing on the condition of the beach front.
The issue unfolded after a daily newspa-
per ran an article on the deterioration of the
beachfront. This was followed by a radio in-
terview with Table View Ratepayers Asso-
ciation (TVRA) chairperson Leon Alhadeff
and Mayco member for community servi-
ces and special projects, Belinda Walker.
Walkers assistant subsequently invited
Alhadeff to a site visit onMonday 14March.
On Friday 11 March, TygerBurger received
information that the radio station and
newspaper had been copied in on the invita-
tion and requested permission to attend.
The Citys media office declined, indicat-
ing that this was not a media event and no
media had been invited.
TygerBurger then sent the invitation as
proof and wrote: Primedia and the Argus
were copied in on the mail so nothing pre-
vents them from showing up as they were
given the details. Hence I thought I would
be nice and request permission to attend.
No response was received.
Site visit cancelled
On Monday 14 March the site visit was
cancelled and Alhadeff voiced his dissatis-
faction. In a letter to the City official who
cancelled the event on behalf of Walker, he
questioned whether the cancellation was
due to Walker not wanting to be confronted
with the truthofwhatwashappening on the
beachfront.
As keen as I was to partake in this in-
spection with aldermanWalker for the cor-
rect reasons, I must highlight that cancella-
tion just short of two (2) hours before the
event is not acceptable and cannever be suf-
ficiently explained away with a conflicting
diary, he wrote.
According toWalker she had to attend an-
other meeting at this time but has engaged
with the local ward councillor regarding
the condition of this beach.
The TVRA instead hosted its own press
conference on the beach on Thursday
17 March where residents raised concerns
about the collapsed paving, the erosion of
dunes, lack of access for disabledpeople and
illegal shelters being erected in the dunes.
Ablution upgrade cost R1,5m
During the walk, Alhadeff highlighted
the various improvements, including new
grass being laid, undertaken in the last
week. He said in the last week the associa-
tion had noted significant improvements
which they believewas done ahead ofWalk-
ers planned site visit.
They also accused Walkers department
of only taking action because they had
been called out in the press.
Walker says claims that workwas rushed
ahead of her visit is incorrect. Landscaping
work is underway by the parks department
and includes the planting of the grass at the
beachfront, on the section from the old tour-
ism centre towards the first pathway.
The planting of the grass will be com-
plete in the next few weeks and came to a
cost of R200 000. An open gym has also been
installed in the area for recreational use.
However, during the walk a resident
highlighted the equipment was faulty.
Walker says the ablution facilities were
refurbished over the past two years and the
damage caused recently by vandalism has
been repaired. The ablution upgrade was
done at a cost of more than R1,5 million .
Asked to respond to claims that the City
is allowing the beachfront to deteriorate,
Walker says: All infrastructure along the
coast is affected by windblown sand. This
is a reality for all coastal amenities. The
continual removal of sand is very costly and
time consuming and stabilisation of the
dunes is themost sustainable and cost-effec-
tive solution.
Once the dunes have been rehabilitated,
repairs to the parking area will commence.
All work will be restricted within the park-
ing area only and the work area will be cor-
doned off to ensure public safety. The park-
ing areas asphalt surface will be neatly cut
backandanyunsuitablematerialwill be ex-
cavated.
Irrigation repairs R700 000
Questioned about R700 000 spent on irri-
gation,Walker explains the first of fourpha-
ses of the irrigation system is currently be-
ing installed on the dune system at Dolphin
Beach this is due to be completed by the
end of June.
The irrigation repairs come to approxi-
mately R700 000 and the posts and other re-
pair andmaintenanceworkwill come to ap-
proximatelyR550 000 for this financial year.
Once the dunes have been rehabilitated, re-
pairs to the parking area will commence.
During the walk a disabled man high-
lighted the lack of access to the beach.Walk-
er says prior to commencing a repairs and
maintenance plan to the boardwalks, an
analysis of the current status of all access
points to the beaches between Sunset Beach
and Small Bay is being done.
This study will assist in understanding
the following regarding each access point:
pedestrian traffic volume, disabled-friendly
access points, water sport-friendly access
points, and durability, among others.
AtMarine Circle an entire ablution block
has been buried in sand and according to
Walker this was built at a time before coast-
al processes were adequately understood
and is located in the path of a moving dune.

A
bout 150 000 radio hams
across the world have been
waiting for the day to tick off
Heard Island in the Southern Indi-
an Ocean about 4 000 kilometres
south west of western Australia
in their log books of entities they
contacted via radio. The radio
hams call this a DXpedition.
Now, 20 years after the previous
DXpedition in 1996, another DXpe-
dition departed from Table Bay
harbour on 10 March for a rough
trip on a vessel, aptly named Brav-
eheart, to the remote and uninhab-
ited Heard island.
In Durbanville, an excited 87-
year-old Dennis Wells will keep a
close eye on the DXpedition from
his shack at his home inThePad-
docks. Even though he ticked off
Heard Island more than 30 years
ago (on 20 October 1985 when an
Australian national Antarctic re-
search expedition team visited the
island), he shares the excitement of
the other radio hams.
Wind, snow, rain ... and a volcano
DXpeditions are undertaken to
remote destinations to help radio
hams all around the world to be
able to make contact.
It is also 20 years since any man
put foot onHeard Island, known for
its adverse conditions of wind,
snow and rain. It also has an active
volcano.
The Braveheart, which is char-
tered by radio amateurs, was ex-
pected to arrive yesterday (Tues-
day 22 March) and, since there is
no jetty, all equipment would have
to be taken on land by rubber
ducks.
This DXpedition, which is called
VKEK and costs about R7 mil-
lion, is led byDr Robert Schmieder
from the USA, the same team lead-
er of the previous DXpedition in
1996.
Schmieder, a world authority on
Heard Island and many other is-
lands around the world, is the au-
thor of many books on the subject.
Wells is part of the SouthAfrican
support team, which is led by Paul
Johnson from Green Point.
Several radio amateurs will
qualify for Honour Roll and #1
Honour Roll when they manage to
make contact with Heard Island.
Wells, a legend in the radio ama-
teur world and well-known by his
call ZS1AU, has earned the very
prestigious DXCC Top of Honour
Roll plaque in 2014 the highest
obtainable in amateur radio, and
placing him at number one in the
world of DX. It can take anything
from 20 years to a lifetime to
achieve this.
Wells was invited to accompany
the Braveheart on a yacht out
of Table Bay harbour.
Braveheart crew to stay for three
weeks
Oh, it takes so long to say good-
bye to a ship and the Braveheart
was no exception. The trip on the
yacht to accompanyBraveheart on
its way was fantastic. When we
were nearRobben Island,we called
Braveheart on our radio and the
ship came to a stop. We took some
magnificent photos with Table
Mountain in the background.
Once again I felt proud of our
city as it was the most beautiful
sight with the table cloth coming
over the top, Wells said.
As the ship tracked its way
across the stormy southern Indian
Ocean fromCapeTown toHeard Is-
land, the participants and the crew
of Braveheart launched a string of
oceanographic buoys in support of
climate research by three of the
worlds leading scientific organisa-
tions, the Woods Hole Oceano-
graphic Institute (WHOI), the Na-
tional Oceanographic and Atmos-
pheric Administration (NOAA)
and the Scripps Institute of Ocean-
ography.
In addition to the Argo buoys,
they also launched a group of
global drifting buoys in behalf of
NOAAand possibly the SouthAfri-
can Weather Service.
The 1250 satellite tracked drift-
ers worldwide remain on the sur-
face during their approximately
four-year lifespan, continuously
reporting on their location as well
as currents, sea surface tempera-
ture, atmospheric pressure, winds
and salinity.
This VKEK DXpedition, com-
prising of 14 amateur radio opera-
tors and scientists, will remain on
Heard Island for threeweeks doing
other scientific work, as well as
amateur radio.
They plan to reach parts of the is-
land by flying a drone with an HD
camera and will be the first to land
on and take off from water. The
photos will be relayed to the
ground station, as well as via satel-
lite.
V Visit the website http://vk0ek.org/ for
an ongoing report of the DXpedition for
the next three weeks.

heowner of FairDealMotors inBrook-
lyn along with two employees are in
court for fraud cases amounting to
R1.7 million.
Last week Milnerton police celebrated
the good work done by Warrant Officer An-
dre Pekeur who helped arrest the 58-year-
oldman and his employees following 12 cas-
es of fraud.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer
DaphneOReilly says the lengthy investiga-
tion stretched over fivemonths and the sus-
pects appeared in court onFriday 11March.
She explains the complainants reported
that they left their vehicles at above-men-
tionedbusiness to be sold.Once the vehicles
were sold the outstanding balance would be
paid to the financial institutions where the
vehicles were purchased.
After this the remaining profit would be
divided between the original owner and the
dealership.
However, when the complainants re-
turned to the dealership to enquire about
the sale of their vehicles they found the
premises vacant. The dealership is current-
ly closed.
The total value of the vehicles in the 12
cases is R1.7 million. The investigation was
headed by Pekeur and the fraud unit at Mil-
nerton Police Station.
The complainants alleged that they visit-
ed the business premises to follow up on the
sale of their vehicles, only to find the prem-
ises vacant.
And while the case has been postponed
and the trio are expected to be back in court
on Wednesday 4 May, police expect the
charges to mount.
OReilly says while only 12 cases have
been reported for investigation, there are
more than 20 complainants.
Police are now requesting vehicle owners
who have similar complaints about the
dealership to come forward.
If you have a case like this to report, call
Pekeur on 021 528 3865 or 083 270 9034.

The Matrix
mixed-use
development at
Century City
has sold out.
Newdevelopment
sells out early
A
ll 24 sectional title offices in a new
mixed-use development, The Matrix,
at Century City, have been sold for a
total value of around R90 million ahead of
completion.
The Matrix forms part of the R1 billion
Century City Square development which in-
cludes a 1200 seat conference centre, a 125
room hotel, restaurants, offices and apart-
ments all situated around a public square
and served by 1330 parking bays.
The building comprises 1300 square me-
tres of double volume retail on the ground
floor, three floors of offices totalling 4500
square metres topped by three floors of
apartments. All 51 apartments in the devel-
opment have also been sold off plan for a to-
tal of R100 million way ahead of completion.
Jean Theron of developers Rabie Property
Group says the sectional title offices, which
vary in size from 118 square metres to 345
square metres, have been sold to a mix of
owner occupiers and investors.
We are now letting the sectional title offi-
ces for investors at R165 per square metre
and, as the offices get nearer to completion,
interest is picking up strongly, particularly
among small to medium size companies
wanting to be situated in this new commer-
cial hub which is populated by large nation-
al and international corporates such as Ab-
sa, Chevron, Philip Morris and Thompson
Reuters. In fact, the Matrix offers a unique
opportunity for smaller users to be situated
in this new commercial and hospitality pre-
cinct and its edgymixof retro and contempo-
rary architecture and combination of face-
brick facades with concrete, glass and steel,
makes a strong creative statement.
Occupation is expected from early April.
Theron said with over 1300 parking bays
owners and tenants would have no shortage
of parking.
He said many factors added to the appeal
of Matrix to both residents and businesses.
These include its location at the heart of
the new commercial hub of Century City
with three restaurants and three coffee
shops spilling out onto a public square, its
access to high speed fibre optic connectivity
through Century City Connect, its access to
public transport with its own MyCiTi stop
and in easy walking distance from the Cen-
tury City Railway Station and the fact it had
been developed as a Green building which
will substantially reduce operating costs .
A new car pool app aims to relieve traffic
congestion and help save the environment
to boot.
Two entrepreneurs, Sipho Ndimande and
ChrisMegan, founded uGoMyWay, a unique
ride-share and car pool mobile application
with which commuters can do their bit to
change the citys traffic flow while getting
to know new people during travel time.
With the app, anyone can find the drivers
and passengers heading in the same direc-
tion as themselves, using the special plat-
form for chatting to make mutual commut-
ing arrangements
The app contains a leaderboard on which
different categories are listed and on which
more can be added, making it easy to find
a ride to almost anywhere in the city.
This effectively means cost sharing, a re-
duction in carbonmonoxide emissions, con-
gestion and road maintenance costs, as well
as more available parking spaces.
Users will also be able to show their com-
mitment to a cleaner environment while
saving money and having the kind of safety
made possible by the app whereby only
those within the users chosen organisation
can see their travel plans.
Companies (or any other organisation)
can pre-register their members to securely
ring-fence their user community.
By maintaining a private profile, any
member of an organisation may only see,
and be seen, by othermembers of the organi-
sation, according to the uGoMyWay web-
site.
The app can be downloaded free on Play-
Store for Android cellphone users and Meg-
an says this is their way of making better
use of the road network and allow(ing) tech-
nology to help people connect to each other
on their website.
Carbon emission reductions are meas-
ured inkilogrammeson the leaderboard, the
number of reduced cars and the ranking of
the pool with the most reductions, is shown
at the top.Why wouldnt your organisation
want to promote its commitment to reducing
CO2 emissions.
Their website also states that they have
made payments simple by employing the
SnapScan mobile payment system.

S
ummer Greens residents are making
strides in taking back their suburb.
This was the sentiment expressed dur-
ing a recent feedback meeting hosted by the
Summer Greens Residents Association.
Soon after opening, the meeting was
plunged into chaos as arguments erupted. In
his address, chairperson Nino Arendse told
residents the meeting was scheduled to take
place late last year but was postponed due
to threats received by an organisation.
Arendse explained the SGRA was ap-
proached by an organisation who wanted to
implement a garden project for ex prisoners
and said the associationundertookduedili-
gence to enquire about the nuts and bolts
of the project.
A man stood up and shouted that the mat-
ter was sub-judice and claimed Arendse
was overstepping by naming the organisa-
tion. He identified himself as a representa-
tive of the organisation and claimed Arend-
se had received a lawyers letter, which Ar-
endse denied.
Two other men joined the first man in
shouting accusations at the committee and
residents tempers flared. Residents called
for the three men to raise their issue sepa-
rately and said they were not concerned
with personal issues. Arguments went
back and forth and the three men would not
back down. Police sector commander Cap-
tain Andre Fourie stepped in and called for
the three men to respect meeting protocol.
The meeting erupted as people shouted and
the committee tried to defend themselves.
Arguments got heated and representatives
from the Summer Greens Neighbourhood
Watch (SGNHW) stepped in and tried to as-
sist. After more than 20 minutes the men
eventually stopped the arguments when res-
idents stood together and demanded they
stop and Arendse was asked to proceed.
Looking at the past year, Arendse ex-
plained by using WhatsApp, the association
expanded communications by linking resi-
dents. He said in the past year, Summer
Greens had experienced several pipe bursts
and water leaks and says the association
provided residentswith information on how
to log C3 complaints. He explained over the
months there was an attitude shift where in
the beginning residents would complain
about municipal issues but after being in-
formed about who to report matters to, they
took it upon themselves to report issues to
the relevant authorities.
We had leaks everywhere. We had lights
out everywhere and nobody knew how to re-
port it. They do now. We created a vehicle
to show them. We now have a trend where
people in theWhatsapp groups no longer say
wehave a leak, they sayhere is the reference
number.
Arendse said it were the small things that
mattered. He said the SGRA aimed to em-
power residents to be active and stop point-
ing fingers at authorities but to instead con-
tinually alert themwhen therewas an issue.
By providing support to the SGNHW, the
SGRA has aimed to raise awareness about
safety issues in the suburb. Arendse encour-
aged residents to join and assist the watch.
Arendse highlighted various improve-
ments in the last year andprojects undertak-
enby theassociation including feedingmore
than 60 children at a childrens home, the
paint-a-thon and many others.
He ended his talk by calling for more com-
munity participation. Its not about taking
over theCitys job.Wewill be promoting tak-
ing pride in our community through com-
munity clean-ups.

Runners to honour slaves
EARL HAUPT
@earlhaupt
T
his years Slave Route Challenge on
Sunday 8 Maywill see participants run
the usual scenic route through the city
while also giving honour to individual
slaves of the Capes past.
Each runner will carry one of the 8 000
names of slaves who appear on a column
ofmemory at the Iziko Slave Lodge in the
city centre.
Thiswasannouncedat the launchof this
years edition of the race at the museum
last week.
Farouk Meyer of Itheko Sport Athletic
Club and organiser for the Slave Route
Challenge explains runners will have a
specific purpose and a special honour in
this years race, referring to the column
of memory on which the names of 8 000
men, women and children are inscribed.
This year, every person who registers
will run on behalf of one of these names
on the column, allowing each runner to
honour a specific person who was an im-
portant part of our countrys past.
More than a race
Organisers say the Slave Route Chal-
lenge ismore than just a race: it is a tribute
to the trials of dispossessed people who
contributed to the early development of
Cape Town and, as a result, South Africa.
The race route takes runners past sever-
al historically significant landmarks,
such as theCastle of GoodHope, GrandPa-
rade, the Whipping Post, Old Slave
Church, the Iziko Slave Lodge and the
Slave Tree Plaque.
Today the Iziko Slave Lodge is a site of
memory a place of reconciliation and
hope. The Slave Route Challenge provides
the runners the opportunity to
actively engage with this histo-
ry and beyond the race to ex-
plore, discover, reflect and re-
connect with their roots, says
Paul Tichmann, curator of the
Iziko Slave Lodge.
Meyer says this years race
aims to honour individuals and
celebrate the collective history
and diversity of both the race
entrants and the people they
are remembering.
This takes the race to a
whole new level, and persona-
lises it for each runner, while at
the same time instilling a sense
of unity and meaning some-
thing so critical at this point in
time for our country, says
Meyer.
5km to half marathon
The event is presented by It-
heko Sport Athletic Club under
the auspices of Western Prov-
ince Athletics. While there is a
minor change in the title and lo-
go of the race this year, it still
forms part of Metropolitan
Lifes mojo series which cele-
brates the community, andMet-
ropolitan Life remains the
main sponsor.
Since the inaugural race in
2011, the annual Slave Route
Challenge has consisted of a
half marathon and a 10km run,
as well as a 5km fun run and
walk, and a 10km big walk for those who
prefer a more leisurely pace.
The half marathon is scheduled to kick
things off at the starting point in Darling
Street at 07:00, followed by the 10km run
at 07:15, the 5km fun run and walk at 07:30
and the 10km big walk at 07:45.
V To enter visit www.iamrunningfor.co.za.
Each of this years participants in the Slave Route
Challenge will be running for one of the 8000 names of
slaves found on the column of memory on display at

a break-in syndicate operating
in the northern suburbs.
The security officers noticed
a suspicious white Volkswagen
Golf at a security complex inTa-

fled the scene.
According to Warrant Officer
Jacques Mostert, the vehicle
was chased to the Bothasig area

route towards them.
They were finally cornered
in the Atlas Park industrial ar-

Mostert.
The items included two flat

various expensive shoes, cloth-

ant from West Beach Table

intensive investigation and has
identified some of the property,
including the one flat screen tel-
evision which has been taken
during a burglary. Three crow-
bars were also found inside the
vehicle, says Mostert.
The police thought the inves-
tigation was done and dusted
until they had a closer look at
the number plates. They found
that the number plates were
covered by fake ones.
Further investigation was
done and found that the false
number plates were used on a
Mercedes-Benz which was in-
volved in a house robbery in
Bellville. The vehicle has also
been noticed on other crime
scenes, including in Bracken-

suspects were charged and will

Die Groot K
gebeur nie nt
met ander nie
Ons was op pad kerk toe toe ek die eerste
keer van die Groot K gehoor het. Oom
kerkklok en ek was vas oortuig hy slaap
in die kerktoring, want hy was altyd net
dr. Hyt ons geskel as ons voete gesleep
het Sondagskoolklas toe.
Ekt gewonder hoe hy gaan skel sonder
n tong. Want oom Koster gaan gesond
word en terugkom die hele gemeente
het immers vir hom gebid.
Kanker was destyds soos n tienerswan-
gerskap of egskeiding. Niemand het
daaroor gepraat of geskinder nie. Gewon-
der dalk, maar nie geprt nie.
Ons het oom Koster nooit weer gesien
nie.
Twintig jaar later was dit my pa se
beurt om die
Groot K in die o
te staar.
Die dag toe hy
nie meer sy
Sudoku-raaisel kon
invul nie, was die
dag dat ek geweet
het dis tyd om
vrede te maak en
koebaai te s.
Wr het die
kerk en my ma-hul-
le gebid dat die
Liewe Vader hom
moet spaar. Ekt
gebid dat hy nie
vir jare moet ly nie en dat hy sonder pyn
moet sterf.
Van die familie het my uitgekryt as n
ongelowige.
my opgevreet ... net di wat in n Calvi-
nistiese huis grootgeword het, sal regtig
verstaan. Die sielkundige het ges ekt
vroer as die res van die familie begin
rou oor my pa. Toe die res nog geglo het
hy gaan weer opstaan, het ek sy studeer-
kamer begin oppak.
Dis hoekom ek die sterk een was n sy
dood. My broers en my ma was gebroke.
Wat die sielkundige ook ges het, is dat
n mens nooit die waarde van hoop moet
onderskat nie. Want solank daar hoop is,
het mense n rede om aan te gaan.
Kanker is nie meer n siekte wat net
met ander mense gebeur nie. Dis op
ons drumpel en meeste van ons het al
iemand na aan ons afgestaan aan di
ongenaakbare siekte.
Ek weet daar is verhale van hoop, van
mense wat kanker oorwin het. Dit bied n
mate van troos.
Al wat n mens kan hoop, is dat
daardie beker by jou verby sal gaan.

Re: Concern over beggars
(TB, 16 March). While I am
sympathetic to the plight of
jobless people, there have to be
other ways to provide for ones
child than endangering it at an
intersection.
These children and their
mothers are so vulnerable to
injury by passing cars or to be
a casualty of a motor accident
which may occur at an inter-
section.
The mothers sit in the
boiling sun for most of the day,
subjecting the little ones to
excessive heat.
Their development is surely
compromised. They should be
playing (hopefully safely) in
natural surroundings learning
about objects and words from
their mothers. There seems to
be no interaction between
mother and child.
I consider what is happening
at the intersections as a form
of child abuse. Surely you do
not deliberately put your child
into a potentially dangerous
situation? Surely the welfare
departments have some
authority here?

Too many people in our
suburbs think they are invisi-
ble or above being seen as
idiots. We, as a community,
must take a stand and learn to
speak up against neglect and
abuse in our areas. Too many
people know about kids being
abused and say nothing. We
must stop being afraid to get
involved. Speak out. Dont be
afraid of upsetting people.
Where animals are treated
badly, the chances of human
rights being violated are huge.
Where children see it as being
okay to be an abuser, in any
form, they grow up not know-
ing any better.
But back to the animal issue
in Kraaifontein we will be
vigilant and report any cases of
going away for Easter weekend
and not making the effort to
make sure your pets are
properly cared for.
Dumping of animals is also
becoming the new big thing!
Please lets all have a lovely
chilled and safe Easter and not
forget about the comfort of our
furred companions. After all,
they never chose to be ours
we chose to have them.

T
he Omuramba MyCiTi station was
converted into a delivery room when
staff rallied to assist a mom in labour.
According to a statement by the City of
Cape Town, it was just after 13:00 on Mon-
day 14March when Xolani Stofile, a MyCi-
Ti station manager with first-aid experi-
ence, was visiting personnel at the Omu-
ramba station.
He noticed the pregnant woman waiting
at the door to the ladies bathroom, which
was occupied at that stage. She seemed to
be in pain and then her water broke unex-
pectedly.
Xolani step-
ped up like a pro-
fessional mid-

moving her

her comfortable

ing birth to a

boy, says May-
co member for
transport, Brett
Herron.
As the dramat-
ic scene unfold-
ed, MyCiTi personnel evacuated the front
end of the station to give the mother and
child some privacy.
Luckily the station was not busy at the
time. The personnel sent for an ambulance
who took the 31-year-old mother and new-
born child to the SomersetHospital. The fa-
ther told us that he was extremely grateful
to Xolani and all of those who assisted his
wife and boy,who they have namedGilbert
Gabriel.
Gilbert and his mother have been dis-
charged from hospital and are now back at
home in Joe Slovo.
We are extremely proud of Xolani who
stepped up and assisted the mother during
this difficult time.Hemaywant to consider
a career as a professional mid-husband.

Police have issued awarning to businesses
to be on the lookout for a man who easily
swindles cashiers out of money while ask-
ing to make change.
According to a report from Table View
police a light of complexion male with
short brown curly hair and a very strong
English accent is targeting small business-
es in Table View.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Adri-
ana Chandler says the man who appears
to be destitute, claims to be the owner of
a small biltong business.
He approaches staff with a cash note,
such as R200, and asks for smaller notes
and will purchase something small.
While the person behind the till gives
him smaller notes, he will indicate that he
needs other notes of a smaller or higher
value. He operates so quickly and tries to
confuse the teller, eventually giving him
more money that he should get.
Detectiveshave stated that there ismerit
for a criminal case of theft to be opened.

net buite Worcester.
Hierword dieGrootVyf gehuisves en be-

reuse van enkele meters af te besigtig.

spot, maar geensins oordryf nie.
In die bestek van een uur het ons vier
van die Groot Vyf-wildsoorte van baie na-
by te siene gekry.
vanwaar Overhex hul druiwe vandaan
kry. Sy het in die middel van die cabernet
