He has already been around the world fourtimes, the first time was from 1997 – 2000as a surfer. Then his passion for photo journalism

took him around the world twice, from cow-boy festivals in Argentina to cage fightingin Russia.Part of his current global cycling tour in-

volves going fromoneSuperRugby teamsta-dium to the next.“I share my journey and charity with

them, take photos with the players and doa little video interviewwith them. I will editit all together in a documentary. I did all theNewZealand andAustralian teams, and thatis what broughtme to Cape Town this time.”The photo journalism and rugby take a

back seat to his greater purpose, however.“After a round the world trip I explored

a number of social problems to get involvedin. While visiting family of mine in Lusaka,I heard that my cousin used to volunteer ata children’s Cheshire home and I joined herone day. I interacted with the staff and thechildren there and heard about CheshireHomes all over the world. I have now beentomore than 20Cheshire homes on six conti-nents. Theyweremynatural choice of chari-ty to raise awareness for.”When he goes to a home he photographs

the people living and working there, joinsthem on fund raisers and ultimately leaveswith the greatest stories to tell others on hisjourney.Sometimes, after he tells his story to some-

one on a strange continent, the person willstare at the retreating figure of the lone cy-

clist and wonder how they can also make adifference to the lives of others. It only takes one moment of inspiration to

inspire a thousand others.

Slater rescued from deadly seaANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

She was on a carefree stroll along thebeach at Kleinbaai on Thursday lastweek when she saw the white head of

a Border Collie beyond the breakers.Lucy Breytenbach saw a couple standing

on the beach, but when she discovered thedog wasn’t theirs, she became worried. She called out to the dog, but while it loo-

ked as if he was swimming towards her, itwas clearly caught in the current and beingswept further and further away. What she didn’t know at that stage was

that Slater, the Border Collie, was hit by acar almost an hour ago and darted into thesea. The exasperated dog was close to drow-

ning.“I was this close to jumping in myself,”

says Lucy.Instead, she ran to Eden on the Bay and

asked a group of kite surfers for help, whilesomeone else phoned the National Sea Res-cue Institute (NSRI) Station 18 in Melkbos-strand and the SPCA.“This wasn’t a typical call for us," says

NSRI station commander, Rhine Barnes.

Rescue“But I knew we had some crew members

available who could respond to the inci-dent.”However, while the rescue service was

preparing to send theMen’s Health Rescuerboat to Kleinbaai by trailer, Lucywas alrea-dy back at the beach.Once there she saw that Slater managed

to claw toadangerously sharp rockoutcrop.Donovan O’Neale was joined by three of

his kite surfing buddies, Byron Clarke, Lu-keWalker andLukeMcGillewie as they rus-hed to the beach.“We spotted the dog andwent into the oce-

an towards the rocks,” says Donovan.“Once there I took off the safety leash and

attached my kite to one of the rocks. I jumpover the razor sharp rocks to get to the dog,who was clearly in huge shock and very ti-red. I pickedhimupand thenwepassedhimfrom one to the other and returned him tothe beach on a paddle board.”Just as Slater stepped onto the beach he

once abandoned in terror, the NSRI arrived

on the scene. While they waited for the SPCA to show

up, NSRI volunteers tried to warm up thefrightened dog.Soon Slater was surrounded by onloo-

kers, who included theSPCA, buthewas on-ly searching for one person – his owner. And then Shawn Steyn arrived. If Slater had enough energy left one could

almost imagine the dog forgetting about hisinjured leg and running towards his ownerin slow motion.“He was stoked,” exclaims Shawn. He recounted events leading up to the res-

cue to TygerBurger.“I visited a friend’s house near the beach

when Slater jumped over thewall. I went af-ter him and saw him barking at someoneselling stuff next to the road for some rea-son. As he backed off into the road a car hithimandhe just ran. I tried callinghimback, but he would not stop!”Shawn searched for Slater along beaches

and askedmany people if they saw a BorderCollie running past. He was dropped off atDerdesteen and walked back towards Edenon the Bay hoping to see his 3-year-oldfriend, but to no avail. Then, in the distance, he saw theNSRI bo-

at and the SPCAvehicle surrounded by peo-ple.

ReunionThis was the reunion he was waiting for.

Slater was taken to the vet and he didn’teven need any stitches.According to Shawn, his dog is a little

traumatised, but nothing too serious.“He’s lying next to me now, moaning that

I’m talking to you and not playing withhim,” laughs Shawn during the telephonicinterview.SPCA’s public relations officer, Wanika

Rusthoi, says animals react in differentwaysduringa crisis “because they’re all dif-ferent sentient beings with their own cha-racters”.“Different breeds and genders also contri-

bute to the ways in which animals expressthemselves. With regards to this case, thedog is a young male border collie, unsterili-sed, and is often taken for walks along thebeach. With the shock of this incident, itcould have sent him into a state of shockwith adrenaline pumping through his veins– causinghim to run. It can only be assumedthat he ran to familiar grounds (the beach)and ended up in the water,” she concluded.

Quarrel with vagrant raises questionsANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

If vagrants take garbage from a refuse bin,is it theirs? And what if a member of thepublic then takes the vagrant’s bag? Is

that theft? These questions came to the fore after a

Parklands woman recently seized a va-grant’s bag and refused to give it back.

Outgoing community police forum chair-person Andrew Brace, and previous princi-

pal inspector of the Displaced People’s Unit(DPU), Wayne Aldridge, clarified the matterto TygerBurger.

Ownership“If you put something into the municipal

refuse bin with the intention of throwing itaway and move the bin off your propertythen the contents of the bin belongs to theCity of Cape Town. While the bin is on yourproperty it still belongs to you.”

He adds that a member of the public has

as little right to take a vagrants bag as it isfor the vagrant to take something out of thedustbin and putting it in there.

In such a situation, Aldridge says it is bestto notify the police, who are within theirrights to seize the bag.

“It is up to the street person to prove thatwhatever is in that bag belongs to him orher,” he continues.

“One thing is certain, members of the pub-lic should be very careful they don’t subjectthemselves to a charge of assault while they

try to remove a bag, which in reality doesnot belong to them.”

ConfiscationBrace says the DPU can remove a variety

of items from vagrants. “These include anyitem that can be used to erect any type ofstructure, shelter or cover for possible un-lawful occupation of city owned land; shop-ping trolleys and carts; and any other itemsthat might be stolen goods. These will behanded over to the police.”

Dodgy school shuttle smashANDRÉ BAKKES

Unlicensed shuttle service vehicles havecomeunder the spotlight after a shuttle vehi-cle hit a young woman in West Beach onWednesday afternoon.According to a resident, the minibus driv-

er left the scene soon afterward to pick upchildren from a nearby school.Resident Agi Orfanos heard “a big bang”

and rushed out to find a 19-year-old girl sit-ting next to the road. “There was a crack inthe windshield of the minibus and the bodyof the vehicle was slightly dented.” Orfanossaid the driver said he was running late andcould not wait for the police to arrive. “Hewas supposed to go and pick up children atBlouberg Ridge Primary School. I noticed

that the minibus’ licence had expired.”Milnerton police spokesperson W/O

Daphne O’Reilly said no accident of this na-ture was reported to the police. She said if an unlicensed vehicle is in an

accident then the owner would be chargedfor driving without a licence. There are apparentlymany different shut-

tle services for parents to choose from.A shuttle service owner who prefers to

stay anonymous said she wasn't surprisedan unlicensed vehicle was allegedly in-volved in this accident, since she comesacross many of these vehicles in her line ofwork.“Parents often choose the cheapest op-tion without ensuring the vehicle theirchild will be transported in is licensed.”The 19-year-old woman was apparently

not seriously injured.

People who photograph a rare objector endangered species with theircellphones could inadvertently as-

sist criminals or poachers.“Geotagging”, a function on smart

phones and tablets that adds geographi-cal information to the photographs andvideos one takes, can be retrieved bycriminals when viewing the footage onsocial websites.

“Geotagging lets viewers know wherea picture was taken. While this is greatfor a beautiful view, it’s a risk for endan-gered wildlife,” explains EttienneJacques Küyler, the Biodiversity AreaCo-ordinator of the Blaauwberg region.

Roy Fuller-Gee, chairperson of theFriends of the Blaauwberg ConservationArea, adds that this does not only applyto endangered animals, but any rareitems.

“There are a number of critically en-dangered plants and medicinal plants inthe reserve. Geotagging can also leadsomeone straight to historical or cultur-

al artefacts. There has been theft of Bat-tle of Blaauwberg items from the battle-field before. Geotagging can even leadsomeone to a collection of paintings inprivate homes and exhibition areas,”says Fuller-Gee.

Küyler elaborates on geotagging, say-ing that some technology automaticallyrecords the GPS location for every imageone takes. This information is writteninto the picture’s metadata, so when oneuploads the images to the web, the geo-graphical coordinates are included aswell.

“On smart phones the geotagging fea-ture is automatically turned on, so youhave to turn it off if you don’t want toreveal the location of all your pictures. On an iPhone you press ‘Settings’ and se-lect ‘General’, then ‘Location Services’.Disable the applications that make useof GPS information. On Blackberry, se-lect the camera icon. Press ‘Menu’, fol-lowed by ‘Options’. Set the geotaggingoption to ‘Disabled’ and save. On An-droid activate the camera and press thesettings button. Turn off ‘Geotagging’ or‘Location Storage’.”

Two of Robert Stodel’s (73) clearestmemories of childhood were of Ger-man soldiers throwing chocolate bars

to him from their troop carrier, and thesound of boots on cobblestone. So tells Nick Stodel, son of this great hor-

ticultural giant who died last Tuesday.Robert founded the Stodels Garden Centrebrand.“My dadwas born into quite a poor fami-

ly in Holland in 1941 and it was occupiedduring World War II,” says Nick. There were no prenatal scans in those

days so the family were surprised by twobabies – Rob and his twin – and so goingfrom two children to four.“They really struggled,” says Nick. His family emigrated to Port Elizabeth

when Rob was 16, and he soon worked asa labourer on a farm near Oudtshoorn.“Eventually he came to Cape Town, go-

ing door-to-door,” says Nick.In 1968 Rob opened the Kenilworth Nurs-

ery as his business started to expand be-yond the flower bulbs he started off selling. It was the first one-stop retail garden cen-tre in Kenilworth.Although his business was in the south-

ern suburbs, he regularly visited thenorth-ern suburbs.“Quite often he was invited to come in

for tea and coffee,” laughs Nick.“He had a huge passion for the environ-

ment, but over and above that, he had ahuge passion for children, and as a resultthe charities we support are children’scharities.”“He would never waste money in any

way. His first new car was the one he cur-rently had.He bought it only twoyears ago, maybe even less, and it was the first timeever in his life he had bought a car out ofthe box.”Robwaswell-known for his generosity to

his staff and violated the apartheid GroupAreas Act by allowing many of the staff tolive on his property.Nick said his dad’s illness, an incurable

lung disease, coupled with his boisterousnature, fooled their family into thinking itwas going to be just “a cycle”.“It was very quick. My dad was never

good at listening to his body.”“Fromhimgivingus instructionsandbe-

ingboisterous, he slipped awayveryquick-ly.” He will be laid to rest this Friday fromthe All Saints Church in Durbanville, at10:00.V See www.tygerburger.co.za for more anecdotesabout Rob Stodel’s life as told by his son, Nick.

A small fire in a storage room in CanalWalk shopping centre on 18 Julycaused chaos andpanic, say a fewpeo-

ple who were caught up in the clamour.Therewere apparently long queues at the

parking pay stations and the parking baybooms as people left the centre in droves.According to shopper Tammy van Zyl, an

alarm went off at about 17:30.“My husband and I were just leaving

Edgars when the deafening alarm shotthrough the mall. We just saw nervous peo-ple rushing toward the exits. We asked a se-curity guard what was going on and he saidhe had no idea,” says van Zyl.The two made their way to the exit and

saw a very long queue of people trying topay their parking tickets. After that they had to queue again at the

booms, only to see someone in a bakkie hav-ing to reverse and go back to the pay stationto pay his parking ticket.Van Zyl says when they finally got to the

booms, they pressed the “help” button, butno-one responded. At least 45 minutes later she and her hus-

band finally exited the centre.Canal Walk marketing manager Vanessa

Herbst confirmed there was a small fire ina storeroom at one of the stores which trig-gered the fire alarms.“As a result our standard procedures

were followed to ensure shopper safety. This lead to a portion of the centre beingevacuated until such time as MilnertonFire Department had responded and de-clared the building safe.”Herbst said it was a short evacuation and

the centre went back to trading as normal.“We apologise for any inconveniencecaused by the evacuation.”When askedwhy security seemed to have

been uninformed, she said theywere awareof the evacuation, but “are not able to in-form every customer of the details as theirobjective is to get all customers safely outthe centre”.She said people were not supposed to

leave in their cars during an evacuationprocedure, but in this case the parking staffdid go to the booms, which were thenopened. Why this didn’t happen immediately is

not clear.Herbst saidCanalWalk’s evacuationplan

was adequate and drills are frequently car-ried out. She said a “full investigation of therecent evacuation” had been carried outand they were “always looking at ways ofenhancingand improvinganyprocedures”.

Mall fire causes brief panic

There is apparently an unprecedented de-mand for property in the Rivergate indus-trial area.Aska Property Group sales director Dave

Macleod-Elliott said since the launch of thenew industrial area a total of 44 industrialproperties have been sold within eightmonths of being put placed the market, equating to a land sales value in excess ofR140m.The industrial area is situated next to one

of the fastest growth points in the WesternCape – just north-east of Table View nearthe new Sandown Road. The newly opened Sandown Road pre-

cinct has already been acknowledged as the“northern gateway” into the suburbs of Ta-ble View, Parklands, Parklands North,Sandown and Sunningdale. It is also along themuch-needed east-west

I am constantly surprised byhow many dog owners in theKenridge and Durbanville Hillsareas walk their dogs withoutleashes, and how many dogsroam the streets without theirowners.

While walking my miniaturepoodle on a leash last year, shewas attacked by a large dogwho grabbed her in his mouth, shook her around, ran off, thensuddenly dumped her.

Owners should keepdogs on the leash

Needless to say, there was alarge veterinary bill, which theowner of the dog refused todiscuss and he renouncedownership. The police subse-quently told me that the doghad been returned to the pound.

While walking my dog withmy husband this year, aDoberman ran out of theproperty and went straight formy poodle. My husband kickedhim away before he could dodamage.

Not so long ago my neigh-bours were walking their dogon a leash and a St Bernardwent for their Labrador, attaching himself to the Labra-dor’s rump.

While driving in the neigh-bourhood last week, I noticed awoman walking two large dogswithout leashes, and on anotheroccasion, a man walking a largedog off leash.

I am too afraid to go for awalk, which is good for myhealth and that of my small pet, because of the unsocialisedanimals in our vicinity. It’s notright.

Please be conscious of youranimals, practise responsibleownership and let us get backonto the streets in our lovelyneighbourhood.

We arecurrently searching participantswho are interested in takingpart in the study.

PD is an increasing majorworldwide health concern andone of the most commonnervous system disorders of the

Regular exercise has shownto be very beneficial to PDpatients. It helps improve theirability to perform daily tasks, their self-care independence andeven improves brain function.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Running freecomes withresponsibilityWith great friendship, comes greatresponsibility.

While there’s no denying that pets area man, or woman’s best friend, many petowners forget the responsibilities thatcome with looking after our furryfriends.

One of these responsibilities is protec-ting your dogs against others and makingsure that they don’t harm other animals.

It is commonplace to see ownerswalking their dogs off their leads, andwhile in an ideal world, it would belovely to be able to give them thatfreedom, there are often complicationsthat come with letting animals go wherethey please.

According to the City of Cape Town’sanimal by-law, no dog is allowed in apublic street or space without a leash, unless the dog is in an area designatedby the council as a free running area. While there don’t seem to be too many ofthese in the Northern Suburbs, a list ofdog friendly beaches can be found atwww.spca-ct.co.za.

Likewise, owners also have a responsi-bility to clean up after their dogs. Simplycarrying a plastic bag with you when youare walking your dog would allow you topick up his “business” and discard it in abin where it cannot offend anyone.

At the end of the day, being considerateis all it takes to create an environmentwhere we can all care for our pets inharmony. Simply ensure your dog can’tdo what you wouldn’t want another to doto yours.

Veteran South African actor andformer Capetonian Stelio Savantehas landed a crucial role in the indie

film, Windsor.Stelio, who grew up in Rondebosch and

Camps Bay and still has family in TableView, Constantia and Fish Hoek, says he isvery excited to be cast in Windsor.Windsor follows the story of a teen who

stands up to a corporate giant, while tryingto keep her family together.“I think the script is brave,” he says, add-

ing: “The subject matter deals with highstakes issues that are brought onto a smallfamily by government and corporate inter-ference”He says he believes that more of these

kinds of stories need to be told to remindpeople, particularly the US public, that lib-erty means less government and more con-trol over our own lives.“The small guy keeps getting shafted,”

Stelio says. In the movie, he plays a corpo-rate lawyer who attempts to bring down anentire community on behalf of a corporategiant.Stelio joins Nick Krause (The Descend-

ants, Parenthood), Quinn Shepard (Unac-companied Minors,Hostages), Emmy nomi-nee, Barry Corbin (Anger Management, NoCountry For old Men) and Marc Derwin(The Secret Life Of The American Teenager,Accepted) in the cast of Windsor.Principle photography on the film starts

this month in Gainesville, Texas, America, and the movie is due to be released nextyear.Stelio recently wrapped several projects,

including a supporting role in BAFTAwin-ner Peter Greenaway’s new film EisensteinInGuanajuato, a role on thenewHBOshowTogetherness, directed by the Duplass Bros, and on the Los Angeles indie Pacific Stand-ard Time opposite Arrow’s Willa Hollandand Chronicle’s Alex Russell.A SAGNominee for his role inUglyBetty,

he is best known to South African audienc-es for his role in A Million Colours. His most recent South African film,

Where The RoadRunsOut, was shot in Dur-ban in 2012, which was the last time he wasin the country. As producer he is known in theNewYork

and Los Angeles theatre communities forheading the 9/11 celebrity benefit play 110Stories, starring opposite the likes of KatieHolmes, Samuel L. Jackson and SusanSarandon while raising money for chari-ties like the Red Cross, The Gary SiniseFoundation and Operation Gratitude. He has also had his own one act play,Ven-

om, producedOff Broadway andnominatedfor Samuel French’s Love Creek Festival. While Stelio believes the film industry

here in South Africa is growing, he’s quickto add that most of the growth stems fromoverseas productions. He hopes the growthwill continue though and says: “The actorsback home need the work and they need towork with seasoned professionals in orderto improve their craft.”After 25 years in America, Stelio doesn’t

have any plans on returning home in thefuture. He says it wouldn’t make sense forhis family or career, but that doesn’t stophim from returning to visit family and filmhere, which he says he will always do.

Crucial rolefor SAbornactor in USindie film

Stelio Savante just wrapped filming on themovie Leap, and is about to start working onWindsor.

It all happens in threesLOUISA STEYL

@lounotes

Durbanville’s multifarious Mr Cat and theJackal are about to release their third al-bum, S3T.

The number three is a recurring featurefor the album, which was recorded overthree years, in three studios, and coversthree themes: love, regret and doom.

The off-beat band made up of Gertjie Bes-selsen, Jacques du Plessis, Pierre-ArnoldTheron, Marcel Christie and JC Visser, gottheir start in 2006 writing theatrical scoresfor local productions.

“The plan was always to develop it into alive music band,” Gertjie says, but pointsout that they use the same sort of structurein the band’s music they would in scoringa theatre production.

Once their songs have been recorded theythen work out how to perform them live.“It’s always a bit different from the recor-ding.”

With a myriad of unusual instrumentsmaking their way into their music, theband’s live shows are something of a theatri-cal production in themselves.

Gertjie and Jacques usually develop thesong’s core before figuring out what accom-paniment it needs, the song then gets recor-ded and has percussion and other elementsadded. “Then it would be much more instru-ments than we can actually play live on stage

with five guys.”This is why they band are a lot more expe-

rimental in studio, where Jacques says theydo a lot of layering.

“That definitely comes from composingfor theatre,” he says.

The result, as Gertjie explains, is a theatri-cal, alternative folk sound.

“It’s difficult to pin point one thing becau-se we draw from lots of different genres andwe play different instruments,” he says.

Gertjie says the new album is more seri-ous than their previous releases.

“It’s more of a grown up album,” he says, quickly pointing out that it hasn’t lost anyof the band’s experimental flair.

While some of the album was recorded atThe Fresh Meat Studio in Durbanville andthe University of Stellenbosch’s studio, thethird studio is “everywhere else”.

Gertjie explains that they recorded sound-scapes like the sound of a river, or fire, which set the tone or vibe for the songs.

“It’s like the feel of where the song goesand sits on top of,” he says.

Fans can experience the album’s vibe atthe launch at Garden Court Hotel in WalmerEstate on Tuesday 5 August.

Tickets cost R125 and can be booked atwww.citysoiree.co.za.V Mr Cat and the Jackal visited the Orange Couch.Go to www.tygerburger.co.za to watch their performance and listen to them talk about the instrumentsused on the album.

Sanlam Cape Town marathon ago

Ready to show the world Cape Town belongs on the international marathon scene are WesternProvince Athletics president Jakes Jacobs, marathon champion and ambassador for the SanlamCape Town Marathon Elana Meyer, Chief Executive for Sanlam Brand Yegs Ramiah and 1995Rugby World Cup captain and marathon ambassador Francois Pienaar.

Launched as a two-day ‘festival of run-ning’ from Saturday 20 September toSunday 21 September, with themain at-

traction on the final day, the Sanlam CapeTown Marathon has achieved significantplanning targets in the build-up to its 60-daycountdown.Towards its five-year vision of becoming

an internationally accredited 42.2km mara-thon, an InternationalAssociation ofAthlet-ics Federation (IAAF) delegation will assessits eligibility for classification as a BronzeLabel event.“We offer the highest purse for a South Af-

rican standard marathon, with total prizemoney exceeding R1,6 million – a require-ment for IAAF Label accreditation,” saidevent ambassador ElanaMeyer, an Olympicmedallist and repeat record-holder in long-distance running.“This is largely due to the vested interest

of financial services group Sanlam, whichhas enabled us to confirm this offer througha naming-rights sponsorship announcedearly July,” Meyer added.

Global stageSanlamBrandCEOYegsRamiah saidSan-

lam was pleased to sponsor the event whichthey hope will put Cape Town and our conti-nent on the global stage alongside famousmarathon cities such as Boston, New York,Tokyo and London.“What resonates with us as a company

that has a long and rich history of empower-ment and giving, are the charitable aspectsof the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. We be-lieve the Marathon will have a positive im-pact onSanlamasaglobal brandandwe takepride in creating an opportunity for interna-tional athletes to compete in a global eventon the continent, in particular African ath-

letes. That for us is themutual benefit,” saidRamiah.Several requirements are in place for

IAAF Label accreditation, among them thelegacy of carrying social investment alongwith an enviable line-up of participatingelite international athletes. Sanlam CapeTownMarathon has through its lead charitypartner, Peace and Sport, L‘Organisationpour la Paix par le Sport, confirmed the at-tendance and participation of Champion forPeace Wilson Kipketer, an Olympic silvermedallist and three-time 800m world cham-pion. He will participate in the SanlamCape

Town 10km Peace Run.Peace and Sport is a politically neutral in-

ternational organisation that uses sport asa development vehicle in crisis communi-ties around the world.Itwas founded in 2007under the patronage

of Prince Albert of Monaco and is highly re-garded and supported by governments, in-ternational sport governing bodies, organi-sations,major private companies and sportschampions the world over. Its founder andpresident is pentathlon Olympic medallistJoel Bouzou, who is president of the WorldOlympians Association.

“AlongwithKipketer, our very ownElanaMeyer has beenmade a ‘Champion of Peace’for Peace and Sport, joining another 78 ath-letes from around the world,” said fellowmarathon ambassador and Rugby WorldCup 1995 captain Francois Pienaar. Under apartnership agreement with Peace andSport, funds raised will be split betweenPeace and Sport’s field programmes in Afri-ca and the South Africa-based organisation,Western Cape Network for CommunityPeace and Development.

Symbolic celebrationThe marathon takes place on the Interna-

tional Day of Peace, 21 September.Along with Peace and Sport, the mara-

thon’s second charitable partner is Enduro-cad (South African Endurance Academy), anon-profit organisation that gives promis-ing young South African athletes the oppor-tunity to train for and participate in long-distance endurance running.“Supporting Kipketer’s role is our con-

firmed line-up of international athletes. Weare proud to announce the participation ofthe esteemed Ethiopian long-distance run-ner Goitom Teseme, Kenyan Willy KiborKoitile and fellow countryman JosphatKamzee Jepkopol,” says Meyer.“Not only does this solidify our ability to

provide aworld-classAfrican experience forelite international marathon runners, but italso sets the precedent for South Africanmarathon runners to compete in an elitefield – something not yet available in thecountry.”This year’s scenic race through the city is

seen as the country’s national champion-ship event for marathon runners, settingseveral benchmarks seen nowhere else inthe country.

SAREL BURGER
