in sowat 10 dae.In die nuutse insident Maandagaand het

drie gewapende mans op die MTN-winkel indie sentrum toegeslaan.Volgens ao. Erica Crous, woordvoerder

van die Brackenfell-polisie, het die voorvalomstreeks 18:55 plaasgevind.Die drie onbekende mans het volgens

Crous, die MTN-winkel naby Mugg & Beanbinnegegaan en voorgegee dat hulle ’n foonwou opgradeer.“Een van die mans het ’n vuurwapen te

voorskyn gebring en die vier personeellede

in diewinkel beveel omagter na die stoorka-mer te gaan en om nie na hulle (die verdag-tes) te kyk nie.”Volgens Crous het die verdagtes die win-

kel deur die “agterdeur” verlaat, nadat hulleeen van die personeellede se motorsleutelsgeneem het.Hulle het met hul buit – slimfone en skoot-

rekenaars – in dié personeellid se silwerFord Fiesta van die toneel af weggery.Crous het gesê niemand is tydens die voor-

val beseer nie. Niemand is nog tot op hedein hegtenis geneem nie.’n Saak van besigheidsroof word deur die

polisie ondersoek.

ger King-kitskoswinkel beroof, maar dank-

Local policemen are hosting a “spina-thon” this Saturday to get people in-volved in their fund-raising bicycle

tour of the west coast later this year.This tour, now in its third year and the

only one of its kind in the Western Cape,aims to raise much needed funds for theSouth African Police Service (SAPS) Edu-cation Trust.

“We invitemembers of the public to joinus and to come sweat with us. A 30 minutespinning session at the spinathonwill costyou R50 and all the money will go towardthe fund, not to mention the solidarity ofour community, which will go a long wayin our preparation for the tour,” saidW/ORonald Kuhn.

Worthy causeThe spinathon will take place between

09:00 and 16:30 at the newBrackenfell Cen-tre (Pick ’n Pay).

“We hope to attract hundreds of fellowcycling enthusiasts to assist us with thisworthy cause, while the members them-selves will spin for the last session be-tween 16:30 and 17:00,” he says, adding thatprizes and lucky draws will take placethroughout the day.

The actual cycle tour sets off on 11 Sep-tember for a week of cycling between theWest coast and Cape Town. Several mem-bers of the Brackenfell and Kraaifonteinpolice stations will take part.

The SAPS Education Trust was estab-lished in 2010, to benefit children whoseparents have died in the line of duty.

Often these officers died fairly youngand in most cases it is almost impossiblefor their families to sustain themselves ontheir pension payouts, especially when itcomes to tertiary education.

When the fundwas launched a fewyearsago, then Police minister Nathi Mthethwastressed that no monetary value could beplaced on the lives of slain police officers.

However, he said the best legacy would

be to invest in the education of their chil-dren.

Highest contributorAn amount of R56 000 was raised

through last year’s cycle tour and localmembers aim to better this by R10 000 thisyear.

Lt Gen Arno Lamoer, who accepted thecheque at a gala event in June last year,thanked cyclists for their initiative andconfirmed that the Western Cape Provin-cial Police is the highest contributor to thefund to date.

“We have donated R200 000 so far, withthe other provincial police departments inthe country not having contributed a centas yet,” he said at the time.

If vagrants take garbage from a refusebin, is it theirs? And what if a memberof thepublic then takes thevagrant’s bag?Is that theft?These questions came to the fore after

a Parklands woman recently seized a va-grant’s bag and refused to give it back.Outgoing community police forum

chairpersonAndrewBrace, and previousprincipal inspector of the Displaced Peo-ple’s Unit (DPU), Wayne Aldridge, clari-fied the matter to TygerBurger.“If you put something into the munici-

pal refuse binwith the intentionof throw-ing it away and move the bin off yourproperty then the contents of the bin be-longs to the City of Cape Town.

“While the bin is on your property itstill belongs to you.”He says a member of the public has as

little right to take a vagrants bag as it isfor the vagrant to take something out ofthe dustbin and putting it in there.In such a situation Aldridge says it is

best to notify the police, who are withintheir rights to seize the bag.“It is up to the street person to prove

that whatever is in that bag belongs tohim or her,” he continues.“One thing is certain, members of the

public should be very careful they don’tsubject themselves to a charge of assaultwhile they try to remove a bag, which inreality does not belong to them.”Brace says theDPUcan remove a varie-

Rekordbedrag vir B’rivier-projek

Through her role as an early literacytrainer for the Nal’ibali reading-for-enjoyment campaign, Portia Daniso

fromKraaifontein gets to do what she lovesbest: ignite a love of reading among SouthAfrica’s youth.

“When children read or hear stories, itstretches their imagination and opens upnew worlds for them. They are exposed tonew situations, places and learn to thinkfor themselves, thisboosts their self-es-teem and confidencein the classroom,”she says.

Inspired by her ownexperiences as ayoung girl listening tothe intsomi or fairy-tales her grandmoth-er would tell her inthe evenings, Danisois excited by the pow-er of books and storiesto spark all children’spotential and helpthem become betterscholars.

Head start“Research has

shown that childrenwho read or share sto-ries with a caregiveror loved ones beforethey start school real-ly have a head start at school – and life –as this activity helps to develop their emo-tional and intellectual intelligence,”Daniso explains.

“Growing up in Kraaifontein, I realisedthat not all the children in my neighbour-hood enjoyed the same storytelling experi-ences I had, and it became important to meto give back,” she continues. Motivated bya commitment to upliftment, Daniso start-ed her career in literacy as an Early Child-hood Development practitioner. She wasdrawn to the Nal’ibali campaign because ofits focus on reading for enjoyment – as chil-dren who have enjoyable storytelling andreading experiences at home aremore like-ly to be motivated to read.

Now she is a training support officer forPRAESA (the Project for the Study of Alter-native Education in South Africa), which

has over 20 years in community literacy de-velopment and is driving the Nal’ibali cam-paign togetherwith partners. Daniso trainsmen and women of all ages in English andisiXhosa on how to engage children, includ-ing babies and infants, with books and sto-ries in everyday life.

“Sometimes, reading aloud and sharingstories with children can take a bit of get-tingused to, especially if the adultswework

with haven’t had anypractice, but it doesn’ttake long before theyare surprised by howeasy and fun it is.

No talent needed“This is the best part

for me is when peoplerealise that anyone ofany age or languagecan do it and that nospecial skills or tal-ents are needed. And,we don’t only showthem how to tell sto-ries or get children ex-cited about books andreading, we also dem-onstrate things likewriting, singing songsand playing games re-lated to literacy. So it’salways a lot of fun.”

Not content withsimply training oth-

ers, Daniso formed a reading club of herown. She encourages children and caregiv-ers from across Kraaifontein to attend herclub at no cost, sometimes with as many as60 children attending each week. ButDaniso doesn’tmind, saying she ismotivat-ed by the smiles on their faces and the en-thusiasm the children bring to the readingclub sessions.

Slater rescued from deadly sea

She was on a carefree stroll along thebeach at Kleinbaai recently when shesaw the white head of a Border Collie

beyond the breakers.Lucy Breytenbach saw a couple standingon the beach, but when she discovered thedog wasn’t theirs, she became worried.The dog was clearly caught in the currentand being swept further and further away.What she didn’t know was that Slater, theBorder Collie, had been hit by a car almostan hour previously and darted into the sea.The exhausted dog was close to drowning.“I was this close to jumping in myself,”says Lucy.Instead, she ran to Eden on the Bay andasked a group of kite surfers for help, whilesomeone else phoned the National Sea Res-cue Institute (NSRI) Station 18 in Melk-bosstrand and the SPCA.

“This wasn’t a typical call for us," saysNSRI station commander, Rhine Barnes.

Rescue“But I knew we had some crew membersavailable who could respond to the inci-dent.”However, while the rescue service waspreparing to send the Men’s Health Rescuerboat to Kleinbaai by trailer, Lucy was al-ready back at the beach.Once there she saw that Slater managedto claw to a dangerously sharp rock outcrop.Donovan O'Neale was joined by kite surf-ing buddies, ByronClarke, LukeWalker andLuke McGillewie as they rushed to thebeach.“We spotted the dog and went into theocean towards the rocks,” says Donovan.“Once there I took off the safety leash andattached my kite to one of the rocks. I jumpover the razor sharp rocks to get to the dog,who was clearly in huge shock and verytired. I picked him up and then we passedhim from one to the other and returned himto the beach on a paddle board.”Just as Slater stepped onto the beach heonce abandoned in terror, the NSRI arrived.While theywaited for the SPCA, NSRI vol-unteers tried to warm the frightened dog.Soon Slaterwas surrounded by onlookers,who included the SPCA, but he was onlysearching for one person – his owner.And then Shawn Steyn arrived.Slater was overjoyed.“He was stoked,” exclaimed Shawn.He said he had been visiting a friend’shouse near the beach when Slater jumpedover the wall. I went after him and saw himbarking at someone selling stuff next to theroad for some reason. As he backed off intothe road a car hit him and he just ran. I triedcalling him back, but he would not stop!”Shawn searched for Slater along beachesand asked many people if they saw a Border

Collie running past. He was dropped off atDerdesteen and walked back towards Edenon the Bay hoping to see his 3-year-oldfriend, but to no avail.Then, in the distance, he saw the NSRIboat and the SPCA vehicle surrounded bypeople.

ReunionThis was the reunion he was waiting for.Slaterwas taken to thevet andhedidn’t evenneed any stitches.According to Shawn, his dog is a littletraumatised, but nothing too serious.“He’s lying next to me now, moaning thatI’m talking to you and not playing withhim,” laughs Shawn during the telephonic

interview.SPCA's public relations officer, WanikaRusthoi, says animals react in differentways during a crisis “because they’re all dif-ferent sentient beings with their own char-acters”.“Different breeds and genders also con-tribute to theways inwhichanimals expressthemselves. With regards to this case, thedog is a young male border collie, unsteri-lised, and is often taken for walks along thebeach. With the shock of this incident, itcould have sent him into a state of shockwith adrenaline pumping through his veins– causing him to run. It can only be assumedthat he ran to familiar grounds (the beach)and ended up in the water,” she concluded.

Slater was warmed up before Shawn arrived onthe scene.

Ons wil mense be-wus maak daarvan, want dit begin al klaar‘rondloop’, en kinders kyk mos na dié ofdaardie nuwe gier,” het hy gesê.

Verwurging“Met die laaste gier, verwurging, het onseers heelwat ná die aanvang uitgevinddaarvan.” Werner sê dié skok-speletjie,waarin meestal kinders hulself met enigevlambare vloeistowwe bespuit en oortrek

Hy sêas deel van hul navorsing oor die nuwe ver-skynsel, het hy en sy span rekords vanbrandwonde nagegaan om spesifiek te kykwaar dié gier die oorsaak daarvan konwees, maar kon nie enige sulke gevalle op-spoor nie.“Ons het gelukkig nog geen oproepe ont-vang, of enige gewondes gevindwat ons aandié speletjie kon toeskryf nie,” het hy gesê.Hy sê egter opvandie beeldmateriaalwathulle oor die vuur-uitdaging gesien het,“skree die mense van die pyn”.“Dis ’n uitdaging wat soos ’n virus ver-sprei het op sosiale media, waar die deelne-mer gewilliglik hulself aan die brand steekdeur vlambare vloeistowwe aan hulself tewend, soos om alkohol aan hul lyf te smeer,en om dan die uiteinde te verfilm.“Die uitdaging is om jouself aan diebrand te steek en dan die vlamme so goumoontlik te blus,maardit het selde ’nwens-like uitkoms,” sê Werner.

A local businessman is setting out on amusic adventure, having just releasedhis debut album, Verily, Verily.

Hyram Doolings, aZevenwacht familyman, has roped in someof Cape Town’s finestmusicians to help on thegospel album helaunched in Kenridgethis weekend.

“As a little boy I al-ways wanted to sing,”Hyram says. His grand-mother took him tochurch where she intro-duced him to the choirmaster and it was just afew months before hewas singing solo.

“The choir used to situpstairs and the peopleused to turn their backsto see who is this littleboy singing ,” He re-calls.

Almost 50 years downthe line, Hyram’s desire to sing turned intoa “huge desire to write”, and that’s howVerily,Verily was born.

As a Capetonian, Hyram says he was alwaysfascinated by jazz, and he always wanted tosing a “jazzy kind of gospel”.

While he hopes to spread the message ofGod’s love, some of the songs are related tohis own struggles, which brought him closer

to God.As a child, Hyram was exposed to an al-

coholic father and an abusive mother, andsinging was an escape for the young boywho once tried to commit suicide by jump-ing into a river.He was saved by his uncle,

but that wasn’t the endof his near-death experi-ences. He got trapped inquicksand, nearlydrowned, and was hit bya car, which saw him gothrough twelve opera-tions and occupationaltherapy to even out hismouth.

“Some of the songs arerelated to the sufferingof Jesus and I couldsomehow to relate tothat through my ownsuffering, but nothingcompares to His suffer-ing for me,” Hyramsays.

Hyram’s grandmoth-er used to often read theBible to him and his sib-lings and the albums’name come from a scrip-

ture she was particularly fond of, John5:24:“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, excepta man be born of water and of the Spirit,he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

He says it was his grandmother’s read-ing that eventually led to the album, whichhe has dedicated to her.

Hyram says he takes his hat off to thepeople who worked with him on Verily,Verily. “It’s guys that have really been inthe industry for a long time.”

Camillo Lombard, Jonathan Rubain andDonveno Prins are just some of the namesin the album sleeve.
