Gestremdes en bejaardes in Kraaifon-tein soebat al jare lank vir toeganklik-heid tot openbare geboue in dié voor-

stad.Dit sluit veral die munisipale gebou by die

Bergdal-subraad in. Die gebou was nog nóóitrolstoelvriendelik sedert dit etlike dekadesgelede gebou is nie.

Barend Faroa, wat namens die Bergdal-ondersteuningsentrum vir persone met fi-sieke gestremdhede gepraat het, wou by ’nnoodvergadering verlede week weet wat alintussen gedoen is om gestremdes in Berg-dal te akkommodeer. Dié vergadering verle-de Dinsdagoggend moes noodgedwonge indie voorportaal van die Kraaifonteinse mu-nisipale gebou plaasvind, juis omdat ge-stremdes nie toegang het tot die kantore enraadsaal op die eerste verdieping nie.

Volgens Faroa is daar ook geen tekens ofborde binne die gebou wat gestremdes wel-kom laat voel nie.

VerleëVernon Erasmus van die Stad Kaapstad se

fasiliteitsbestuursafdeling het effe verleëvoorgekom met sy antwoord.

“Die gebou is al baie jare hier en ongeluk-kig het ons nie die ‘luxury’ om nuwe gebouete kan bou nie,” het hy gesê.

Volgens Erasmus is daar reeds R1,5 mil-joen aangevra om ’n hyser in die gebou aante bring en word daar ook gekyk na ’n rol-stoelvriendelike oprit by Hansen se kantoor.

Grant Twigg, Bergdal-subraadvoorsitter,het erken dat die kwessie ’n leemte is en dat“sistematiese aandag” daaraan gegee gaanword.

Verantwoordelikhede van ‘n Bestuursraad vir die aangeduide Kinder- en Jeugsorgsentrums is om prestasie te monitor envoldoening aan die Nasionale Norme en Standaarde soos voorgeskryf in die Kinderwet No. 38 van 2005, die Regulasies vandie Wet, die Kinderwysigingswet No. 41 van 2007 en die Nasionale Bloudruk op Kinder- en Jeugsorgsentrums (beide virkinders kragtens die Kinderwet en die Wet op Kindergeregtigheid No. 75 van 2008) te verseker.Vereiste ten opsigte van ‘n genomineerde lid vir die Bestuursraad is:• Nominasies moet skriftelik voorgelê word, saam met ‘n curriculum vitae van die genomineerde en ‘n brief waarin aangedui

word dat die genomineerde instem tot die nominasie;• Moet oor ‘n regskwalifikasie beskik ingevolge die regsraamwerk waaronder Kinder- en Jeugsorgsentrums bedryf word;• Moet ‘n burger van die Provinsie van die Wes-Kaap wees;• Moet van die Staatsdiens en/of akademiese omgewing/of gemeenskappe binne die plaaslike omgewing van die

Sentrums wees;• Moenie ‘n botsing van belange of moontlike botsing van belange hê as gevolg van hul lidmaatskap op die Bestuursraad

nie;• Moet hulle pligte te goeder trou, openhartig, betroubaar en op ‘n wyse wat bevorderlik is vir die bestuur en die welstand

van die Sentrum kan uitvoer.

Die lid van die Bestuursraad sal vir ‘n tydperk van twee (2) jaar aangestel word, waartydens die lid ‘n honorarium sal ontvang virsy/haar tyd, uitgawes en dienste gelewer. Daar sal van lede verwag word omminstens een keer per kwartaal te vergader en omdie genoemde Kinder- en Jeugsorgsentrums jaarliks te besoek.

Daar moet kennis geneem word daarvan dat Persone wat op die Bestuursraad gaan dien, se name geverifieer sal word metDeel B van die Nasionale Kinderbeskermingsregister en die Nasionale Register vir Seksuele Oortreders, en klaring sal uitgereikword deur die Direkteur-Generaal van Maatskaplike Ontwikkeling en die Direkteur-Generaal van Justisie en GrondwetlikeOntwikkeling onderskeidelik. Daar sal ook van benoemdes verwag word om ‘n algemene sekuriteitsklaring te ondergaan.

from the Bloekombos Community Hall bylaw enforcement, the hall was burnt down.The group of residents reportedly invaded

the hall to use it as residential accommodati-on.TheCity ofCapeTowncondemned the des-

truction of city property, alleging the blazewas instigated by Ses’Khona.Ses’Khona is a civic rightsmovementwith

members predominantly living in informalsettlements, and has been responsible for se-veral protests in and around Kraaifontein.Among other things, the group demands

land to build houses on and, according to

ward councillor BrendaHansen, illegally in-vaded other open land in Kraaifontein a fewweeks ago.At a meeting three weeks ago, sub-council

chairman Grant Twigg told members ofSes’Khona that the city will discuss severalhousing options with them, but illegal landinvasions will not be tolerated.Mayco member for safety and security JP

volved riders from a number of differentclubs, saw them dressing themselves andtheir horses up in gruesome fashion.Granted, thehorses and the riders looked

slightly more adorable than gruesome, butyou get the picture.The events of the day were aptly named

A disabled boy (5) fromKraaifontein inneed of a wheelchair was beamingwith pride when he blew the whistle

for a charity run to start.The charity run was presented by the

KenridgePrimarySchool onFriday to raisefunds to buy awheelchair – or even amoto-rised wheelchair if there are enough funds– for Tiaan Louw.Tiaan suffers from cerebral palsy and is

a quadriplegic after a birth injury.His mother. Leigh-Ann (39), is a single

mom and work in people’s houses and gar-dens for an income.On 15 December, Tiaan will turn six ye-

ars old after he was born a breach babywith his umbilical cord around his neck.He was also born a month too early. Ac-

cording to Leigh-Ann, she was never askedto go for a scanat the clinic orhospital,whe-re he was born.“It was all very traumatic”, she said.

Tiaan, who is in Grade R at the PaarlSchool in Brackenfell, desperately needs awheelchair, as he still sits in a stroller athome.“He has to drag himself or roll where he

wants to be,” said Leigh-Ann.She also completed eight laps of the chari-

ty run course.“He is such a lovely, friendly boy. I wish

I could afford a better education and moretherapy for him. My legs are sore after allthe running, but I did it for my child,” shesaid.The school hopes to raise about R80 000

with the event. Last year about R70 000 wasraised with this annual charity run forother beneficiaries, and the year beforeabout R100 000 was raised, said Jenny Fis-her, a teacher of Kenridge Primary Schooland organiser of the event.“Imagine his surprise if he woke up on

In the face of serious concernsby localwardcouncillors, the City of Cape Town is satis-fied with their current plan for a newbenchmark taxi-rank in Wallacedene.

At a recent sub-council meeting, localcouncillors voiced their worries when thecity tabled their management plan.

Brackenfell ward councillor MarianNieuwoudt said itwas questionable for a fa-cility of this stature to not have a full-timemanager on site.

“How can the city roll out a R25 millionworld-class facility and then leave it wit-hout a manager?” she asked, warning mis-management orneglect of this facility couldbring the city into major disrepute.

The facility, which was completed at theend of August, is the country’s first “green”taxi rank and is almost completely self-sus-taining.

At a hefty price tag, the facility runs onsolar power, enabling it to operate comple-tely off the electricity grid, and besidesdrinking water, harvests all other waterthrough rooftop rainwater and recycling –a benchmark for future public transport fa-

cilities, according to the city.When it opened a few months ago, it was

the talk of town and city mayco memberfor transport, Brett Herron, described it asa facility at the forefront of intelligent ar-chitectural design and technology.

He said the capital cost of solar installati-on will be recovered within six to 10 yearsfrom monthly energy cost savings.

Responding to Nieuwoudt’s concerns, hesaid the Wallacedene PTI facility is regar-ded as a category 2 facility, based on thetransport operational activity and thenum-ber of daily commuters.

There are about 5 000 commuters per day,with about 50 minibus-taxis operating.

“The minibus-taxi transport operationshappen predominantly in the morning pe-ak hours, whereafter activity at the rank issignificantly lower. In terms of its status asa category 2 facility, the Wallacedene PTIforms part of a cluster of seven other trans-port facilities currentlymanaged by an offi-cial. This official visits the facility at leastthree times per week. A full-time compli-ment of six contracted security officials andthree contracted cleaning staff assist withthe cleanliness and general day-to-day or-der at the facility,” he said.

The guitarist behind Afrikaans rockband Zinkplaat, has been quietly work-ing on a side project that’s been picking

up steam.Basson Laubscher started Basson Laub-

scher & The Violent Free Peace in about2004, while still playing with Zinkplaat, asa way for him to experiment withmusic out-side of the band.“This project started very organically,” he

says. Being a fan of blues himself, The Vio-lent Free Peace started out as a cover bandand a way to have fun.“It kind of grew into something else.”Today the band,made up of Basson on gui-

tar and vocals, Beitel Van Der Merwe onbass and Jan Fyfer on drums, plays whatBasson describes as a good mix betweenblues, rock, folk and country.Although the band released their debut-

EP, Shakedown, earlier this year, Bassonsays their sound is rawer and a lot louderthan what you’ll hear on the album.When they band first started, the line up

was constantly changing. Die Heuwels Fan-tasties’ FreddenHartog evendid a stintwithThe Violent Free Peace and it was he whocame up with the band’s name.As a child, Basson discovered his father’s

vinyl collection at the age of 14.“He had this vinyl of this crazy dude with

this big hat and pink cowboy boots and a re-ally beaten up guitar. I remember I put it onand from the first track, the virus set in.”The crazy dude was Stevie Ray Vaughn

and Basson was hooked on the raw honestyof the blues.Basson says he’s not ready to choose the

The left lane is dedicated totraffic from the north side ofthe parking, the middle lane isfor traffic exiting the circle’souter lane towards Old OakAvenue, and the right lane isfor traffic exiting the circle’sinner lane towards Old OakAvenue. Traffic on the innerlane may also proceed furtheraround the circle if required.

It is idiotically dangerous tocut from the inner lane circleto the other two. Despite this,just about every time I drivethere is some idiot who tries toshove me across this barrierline.

Consider any of the roadswhich intersect with DurbanRoad. These roads have one

lane in each direction. DurbanRoad has two lanes in eachdirection.

If you wish to turn left ontoDurban Road, you are requiredto turn into the left lane; thesame for the right lane

There are solid barrier linesbetween the two lanes and it isillegal to enter the right lanefrom the left – and vice-versa –as it would entail crossing thesolid barrier line.

It is dangerous to cut into theright lane from the left side.Despite this, just about everytime I drive there some left-turning idiot tries to shove meinto the centre island when Iturn right onto Durban Road.

Please wake up. Be aware ofthe road environment in whichyou drive.

Gideon Drotschie is itching to getback in the hexagon after a year’slay-off with a back injury, and

looks forward to defending his heavy-weight title against Norman Wessels onThursday night.

Drotschie, known as the “Jugger-naut”, last fought at EFC 25 in Novem-ber last year when he successfully de-fended his title against Fraser Opie.

According to head coach Rico Hat-tingh of REPS Fitness in Bellville, Nor-man “Chef” Wessels will be the toughestopponent in Drotschie’s short but everso successful professional career thusfar. “This will be our toughest fight yet,no doubt. But having said that, we arevery confident that Gideon will retainhis title. We thoroughly did our homework and we are prepared.

Raring to go“We know Norman’s strong points

and we know where to attack. The im-portant thing for us is to focus on ourown game. Training has been excep-tionally good and Gideon recoverednicely from a niggling back injury. Heis fit and raring to go,” said Hattingh.

Gideon is counting the days to fight

night. “It’s been a while since I foughtin the EFC, and to make my comebackin front of my home crowd at Grand-West definitely counts in my favour. Iam ready for anything that Norman willthrow at me.

“It feels good to have that first win asa professional in the bag. I will also faceRegis Muyambo at EFC 35. I am lookingforward to getting in a solid perform-ance in front of our local fans and keep-ing a clean record,” said Michael.

Michael lives and breathes MMA. “Heis one of the most dedicated and hardworking individuals in the sport. He isstill a rookie, but give him a chance, heis going places in the industry. He istough as nails, and his technique isright up there. I am very excited abouthis future,” said Hattingh.

Following an exciting 2014 season, fiercecompetition marked the national finals ofthe Spur High School Mountain Bike Leaguethat was hosted at Bekker School in Maga-liesburg.

A record number of 355 riders represen-ting the cream of high school mountain bikeriders from more than 69 schools acrossSouth Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe whocompeted in the two-day event.

DF Malan, who formed part of the WesternCape team, came third in the interprovincialtournament. The 4.5km track at BekkerSchool proved more challenging than previ-ous seasons, boasting a lot of single trackstretches as well as tricky falls and climbsthat required both stamina and technicalskills from the riders. The lap-race formatof the event saw the various age categoriescomplete a specific number of laps ranging

from two laps for the sub-junior girls to a tes-ting five laps for the junior men.

The team from Menlopark High Schoolwas on top form and secured four podium po-sitions as well as logging a number of top tenpositions to secure both the girls and mixedteam national championship trophies, whileGrey College in Bloemfontein won the boysteam category.

The league was launched in 2009 as a jointinitiative between Spur and Amarider tocreate a fun racing environment for child-ren, and has also facilitated the building ofmountain bike tracks on school propertyand community grounds.

Earlier this year the league cemented itsposition as one of the leading sport develop-ment programmes in the country when itwas shortlisted as a finalist for the 2014 Dis-covery Sport Industry Awards.

Talle hoogtepunte is Saterdag behaal ty-dens die TygerBurger/Frans du Toit-atletiekbyeenkoms op die Bellville-

baan.Die byeenkoms, wat in sonnige weersom-

standighede afgehandel is, het ’n ideale ge-leentheid gebied vir atlete om vroeg in dieseisoen te bepaal of hulle al slaggereed is.

Die byeenkoms is ook goed ondersteundeur atlete van so ver as Sasolburg en diespanne van Namibië – Edugate en Agri, uitonderskeidelik Otjiwarongo en Grootfon-tein se omgewing,– wat dit ’n internasiona-le kleur gegee het.

Daar was heelwat skitter-prestasies waar

die atlete meer as 1 200 punte op die ASA-ta-bel verdien het. Onder die laerskoolatletewas daar ook puik prestasies.

aan ’n besoekende atleet van HTS Sasol-burg behoort. JC Schultz het die hamer indie o.16-ouderdomsgroep met ’n skitterendegooi van 61,64 gewen en is as die TygerBur-ger-atleet van die byeenkoms aangewys.

Die Bellville-atletiekklub verdien ook lofvir die skitterende organisasie van die by-eenkoms. Alles het seepglad geloop en dierustige atmosfeer wat geheers het, het be-slis ’n groot rol gespeel dat die atlete sovroeg in die seisoen puik prestasies behaal.

Janke van Wyk het die o.18-atlete senaam hoog gehou met ’n puik 14,97 in die100 m-hekkies. Carla Johnson (SPAAC) het’n puik 5,79 in die verspring behaal.
