Young Leaders
Those years at Prep School, I am convinced,
can have tremendous benefits. They are two
years that really can make a difference.
John Baugh, Headmaster of The Dragon School, Oxford
Tuesday, 20 October 2015
…the confidence to strike out for the best that they can be,
at whatever that might be. Unafraid of risk, able to
juggle more than they can reasonably handle, adept at
recovering from the inevitable disappointments, the Year
8 leavers go forward prepared for life. And that is
priceless.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Habit 1: Be Proactive®
I am a responsible person. I take
initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes,
and moods. I do not blame others for my
wrong actions. I do the right thing without
being asked, even when no one is
looking.
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind®
I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that
have meaning and make a difference. I am
an important part of my classroom and
contribute to my school’s mission and
vision. I look for ways to be a good citizen.
Habit 3: Put First Things First ®
I spend my time on things that are most
important. This means I say no to things I
know I should not do. I set priorities, make
a schedule, and follow my plan. I am
disciplined and organized.
Muriel Summers
Habit 4: Think Win-Win ®
I balance courage for getting what I want
with consideration for what others want.
When conflicts arise, I look for a win-win
solution.
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
®
I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I
try to see things from their viewpoint
(paradigm). I listen to others without
interrupting; I listen with my ears, my eyes,
and my heart. I am confident in voicing my
ideas.
Habit 6: Synergize®
I value other people’s strengths and learn
from them. I get along well with others;
even people who are different than me. I
work well in groups. I seek out other
people’s ideas because I know that by
teaming with others, we can create better
solutions than what any one of us could
alone. I look for Third Alternatives.
Muriel Summers
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
®
I eat right, exercise, and get enough sleep
(body). I learn in lots of ways and lots of
places, not just at school (brain). I spend
time with family and friends (heart). I take
time to find meaningful ways to help people
(soul). I balance all four parts of myself.
Quote
“Leadership is communicating a person’s
worth and potential so clearly that they are
inspired to see it in themselves.”
—Dr. Stephen R. Covey

Reading at Home
10 minutes a night. The pupils should be reading for pleasure. They are encouraged to change their books for home regularly and keep a log of the books they are reading.
Guided Reading
One session of guided reading a week.
Guided reading book level is at a slightly higher level than the books sent home as a lot of discussion is done around the story.
Library Books
Book borrowing once a week in class time.
These books often lend themselves to paired reading with an adult or sibling.
Bug Club
Electronic resource where children can access books at home via the internet.
Each story book has comprehension questions linked with it.
Reading
Prep is given out each week on Thursday and is expected to be completed by the following Tuesday
In Year 3 six additional non-compulsory tasks are given out every half term. You can choose when and how you complete these. Handing them into your child’s teacher will earn them extra praise and maybe even some Mystickers.

Be the best that I can be
Help others be the best that they can be
Rewards in Years 3 and 4
Each day is a fresh start.
We have visual aids in each class to help remind
the children about the choices they make in terms of
their behaviour.
After several verbal warnings and giving the children
the chance to modify their behaviour they may be held
in for 5 minutes of their playtime in order for them to
reflect further on how they have reacted to a situation.
Sanctions
How does the Quick Point system work?
Q: How are Quick Points tracked?
A: The Quick Points are added onto and
logged on Engage.
Tutors / Class Teachers are then able to see
how many have been received.
Q: What happens if I get Quick Points?
A: Tutors /Class Teachers will speak to your child
about their behaviour, the choices that were made
and ways to prevent it happening again.
We want to help!
If the issues continue, the House Master / Mistress will
become involved, there may be a House Detention and
parents may be contacted.
When will Quick Points be given?
(Warnings will always be given first…)
• persistent late or unfinished prep;
• calling out or misbehaving;
• constantly leaving items around the school;
• not tucking shirts in;
• wearing the wrong shoes;
• being in areas of the school where pupils are not
permitted;
• breaking the Prep School Rules.
As young leaders, children are taught that they are
responsible for
their own behaviour.
These sanctions are put in place to help everyone
benefit from a happy
and secure community.
Break and Lunch Time
Children who have cold packed lunches should also bring
in a healthy snack for break time
Children need to bring hats and water bottles everyday.
Hats should be worn outside- no hat no play policy.
If children want to access the astro-turf during playtimes
they must bring in trainers to change into.
