// TOM and TOM’s Programming

The Old Market began life in 1828 housing meat, fish, vegetables, sellers and buyers. It supplied the elegant residential development of Brunswick town, which was originally independent from Brighton and Hove village. As Brighton and Hove have grown up around it, The Old Market building has catered for changing needs, operating as a stables, warehouse and more recently as an arts venue.In 2010 current owners Yes/No Productions bought and rennovated the building, fitting it out for gigs, theatre productions, events, performances and generally transformed The Old Market into TOM; a fantastically flexible cultural space.

Designed to accomodate a diverse range of performance requirements, TOM’s auditorium suits intimate theatre, shows which demand large stage space, or even creative staging arrangements. We are fast earning a reputation as a great venue for quality theatre in Brighton and Hove.

TOM is ideal for stand-up, sketch or even mixed-media comedy. Seating can be arranged fully-end on, in cabaret tables, or as a mixture of the two. TOM’s Bar also hosts regular comedy nights featuring both new and headline performers.

TOM’s spacious auditorium (up to 500 standing) provides an excellent atmosphere that has impressed musicians and audiences alike. Great acoustics, quality production values and an inspiring setting. Optional arrangements include various PA specifications, standing space, cabaret tables, raked seating, stage-side bar, support stages and DJ faciliites.

Combined with TOM’s Bar, the auditorium becomes an ideal event space for private or public functions. Launch events, celebrations, unveilings, even film premieres would all be ideally placed at TOM. The elegant Waterloo Room is a fantastic additional function space.

Page 5: TOM - Brighton Fringe 2013 Application Form

Recently fully refurbished, TOM’s Main House is a fantastic 11mx24m room which can be configured in a huge range of set-ups. Hanging between gorgeous wooden roof beams, the truss is 5.15m above floor level. Standard theatre, music and comedy staging arrangments comprise a 6-6.6m stage at one end, however the space has the flexibility to accomodate multiple stages, catwalk staging or other arrangements to suit your show or event.

192 raked seats can be extended out and combined with extra freestanding seats to boost seated capacity to 300. Maximum capacity for audience members standing is 500. Variations on these arrangements are numerous, and we’re happy to discuss the best set up for your event.

Behind the scenes at TOM - The Old Market you’ll find an extensive network of dressing rooms, showers, production offices and facilities.

Whether supporting the Main House or providing event space of its own, TOM’s Bar and the elegant adjoining Waterloo Room are great for social functions or sit-down events. Although we don’t have a ‘studio space’ as such, TOM’s Bar is also regularly set up with a stage, basic lighting and seating for theatre, comedy, talks and live music.

Backstage, a number of rooms provide great ‘break-out’ spaces, should your event need a bit of extra space or privacy. Many of these have also been used for site-specific performances.One of our cellar rooms can also be converted into a screening space, The Dry Store Cinema, suitable for intimate films and video installations. The room has a capacity of 10-12, and is accessed via a spiral staircase into the basement.

In previous years, shows at TOM have brought the seaside into our cellar cinema, created a fictional government department in our green room, and a party in our Box Office. We’re very happy to use our imaginations in utilising various spaces in this large building.

We operate our own box office system which allows audiences to purchase tickets online, on the phone or in person. Sales reports are retrived on demand or can be sent directly to you. We also work with other ticket suppliers such as the Brighton Ticket Shop to maximise opportunities for ticket buying. Data collected from sales can be passed on to you if audience members have given their permission.

Your marketing efforts will be well supported by TOM. We produce regular program brochures, run a multimedia website, send e-mailouts, produce posters, plus we’ve got great relationships with local printers, flyerers, and advertisers. From Brighton centre, walk along Western Road for about ten minutes. Pass the Co-Op, then start looking left for us on Upper Market Street.

TOM is practically equidistant between Brighton and Hove stations, and is about a 25 minute walk from each. Services arrive from all over the South and from London.

A large number of bus services from local areas and across the South lead to TOM. Hop on busses 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 5, 5A, 5B, 6, 20X, 24, 25, 46, 49, 49A, 81 or (at night time) N25. Our nearest bus stop is the Western Road Co-Op.

Lucky drivers can park their vehicles in the streets directly surrounding us. Better odds are available on the seafront where there’s Pay&Display or at NCP Regency Square further down the road.
