This report provides an update of current waste management projects.

Operational:

• The work crew from the NT Department of Correctional Services collects recyclable material from the stock pile (e.g. wood pallets, bricks, metal sheeting). In total 105.52 tonnes were collected during the period July 2016 to April 2017.

Annual Waste Monthly Total Comparison (figures do not include clean fill):

April 2017 2,883.18 tonnes

April 2016 2,685.14 tonnes

Running total for 2016/2017 Financial Year:

27,613.59 tonnes of waste (excluding clean fill) were collected at the RWMF from July 2016 until April 2017 (Table 2).

Annual Recycling Comparison by Month (Total Recycling Material - Table 1 and Figure 2):

April 2017 78.50 tonnes (2.72 %)

April 2016 192.17 tonnes (7.16%)

A figure of 20.57% of the total waste from July 2016 until April 2017 was recycled.

From 1 July 2016 until April 2017, the total stock intake at the Rediscovery Centre was 214.65 tonnes:

Third grade stock (low grade) of 79.2 tonnes was subsequently returned to the landfill. The final amount of second hand goods recycled through the Rediscovery Centre was 135.457.44 tonnes.

Waste News and Other Events

• Free disposal of computers and televisions is available to the public on the first Saturday of each month through the National Television and Computer Stewardship Program. The next e- waste free drop off day will be on Saturday 3, June 2017.

• The 10c refund scheme for wine and spirit bottle recycling operates at the Regional Waste Management Facility. In total 15,254.00 bottles were collected in April 2017.

This report provides an update of current development activity.

2. Major Development Works - currently under construction2.1 llpeye llpeye Subdivision - Subdivision work is progressing & entering final stages of completion..

BTO is expected to provide unconditional certification for this project which is now managed by DIPL. A site inspection was conducted in February by Greenhills, Council with BTO and DIPL. Outstanding issues relevant to Council requirements are still being rectified as a priority.

2.2 Kilgariff Subdivision - Work in progress including the discussion on the improvement of the Norris Bell intersection to prevent flooding at the Cemetery. Council has received a response from NT Government on the outstanding defects being addressed. No further updates provided this month.

2.3 Lot 288, 69 Ross Highway - To use and develop the land for the purpose of a motel with 76 single rooms and caravan park with 25 two bedroom self-contained cabins and 6 camping sites including a communal kitchen, dining area, ablutions, laundry, recreation area and office. Council awaits the final solution proposed with regard to the stormwater discharge from this site. No updates.

2.4 Lot 8203, 27 Head Street - Construction of 9 x 3 BR multiple dwellings in 2 buildings - Currently building construction is in process.

3. Major Development Works - completed recently3.1 Lot 8146 and 8147, 14 Parsons Street - Construction of the Supreme Court is complete. A Part 5

clearance to Council conditions was issued in April 2017.

3.2 Lot 766, 8 Harvey Place - Part 5 and a list of documents expected at Handover for the Netball facility was issued in April 2017. Defective works are currently being rectified before Handover.

All the above developments have been discussed in previous Development Committee meetings. This advice is for the information of Council.

This report provides an update on environmental projects.

Energy

• Graphs showing the energy use and solar produced at five main Council facilities is attached.

• Use of solar power has resulted in 17 tonnes Greenhouse Gas Emissions savings in April 2017.

• Note: Emissions savings based on reducing reliance on grid-supplied energy at an emissions factor of 0.67kg/CO2-e/kWh (National-greenhouse-accounts-factors-august-2015).

• Attended Community Energy Conversations meeting organised by Repower Alice Springs to hear from representatives from Pingala community solar cooperative and hear about different models for community solar.

Other

• Roaming Cat Prevention Projecto A Community Service Announcement (TV ad) was finalised and will be aired next

month on television networks and local radio stations, o 360 responses to the online survey on cats were received. The aim of the survey was

to inform Council about the community’s level of knowledge and interest about the effect of cats on wildlife, the Council by-laws, and how we can better inform the public on the issue. The results of the survey will be provided in a separate report next month.
