WEEK 1 (SEPT. 27-28, 2019) @wcha_whockey /WCHAWomensHockey wcha.com@wcha_whockey FloHockey.tv3 /WCHAHockey

Annually pitting the nation’s top programs and players, the WCHA Postseason Tournament is the premier conference tournament in women’s college hockey.

This year, the two-week, seven-team tournament will play out over the weekends of Feb. 28-March 1 and 7-8, 2020.

All seven WCHA teams qualify for the tournament, with the top seed earning a quarterfi nal-round bye and advancing directly to the 2019 WCHA Final Faceoff.

The remaining top three seeds host the bottom three seeds (No. 2 vs. No. 7, No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5) in a best-of-three quarterfi nal series on their campuses Feb. 28-March 1.

The three quarterfi nal winners join the No. 1 seed at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis on March 7-8 for the 2020 WCHA Final Faceoff.

The WCHA debuted the league's new regular season championship trophy - the Julianne Bye Cup in 2018-19.

The Cup is named in honor of longtime women’s hockey advocate Julianne Bye

The Julianne Bye Cup is a custom-made perpetual traveling trophy that will be presented to the winner of the WCHA regular season championship each year. The trophy travels from champion to champion at the conclusion of each regular season.

The Cup rests on a three-tier base that will include the trophy name and the Julianne Bye story on the fi rst tier and engraved plates with each championship school’s name.

2019-20 WCHA PRESEASON COACHES' POLL

DEFENDING NCAA CHAMPION WISCONSIN TOPS

WCHA PRESEASON COACHES POLL

Defending national champion Wisconsin is the unanimous pick among league head coaches to win the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Women’s League regular season title.

The Badgers, who also won the WCHA playoff championship last season en route to their fi fth national title, collected 36 points and six fi rst place votes in preseason polling among the WCHA’s seven bench bosses (coaches could not vote for their own teams). Defending WCHA regular season champion Minnesota received the remaining fi rst place vote and tallied 31 points in the poll.

Ohio State fi nished third with 24 points to edge out fourth-place Minnesota Duluth (23 points). Bemidji State (15), Minnesota State (12) and St. Cloud State (6) rounded out this year’s poll.

Emma Maltais, Ohio State’s junior forward, and Abby Roque, Wisconsin’s senior forward, each received two votes in a crowded fi eld for WCHA Preseason Player of the Year honors. The duo edged out Ohio State senior defenseman Jincy Dunne, Wisconsin sophomore forward Sophie Shirleyand Minnesota junior forward Grace Zumwinkle who each received one vote apiece.

The WCHA Preseason Rookie of the Year selection is Minnesota freshman defenseman Madeline Wethington, the 2019 Minnesota Ms. Hockey award winner. Wethington received three votes, with the others going to St. Cloud State forward Klara Hymlarova and Wisconsin forwards Dara Grieg and Grace Shirley (the sister of Sophie Shirley, last year’s WCHA Women’s Rookie of the Year).

The loaded Preseason All-WCHA Team features Jincy Dunne, who was a unanimous coaches’ pick after being named last season’s WCHA Defenseman of the Year, and Wisconsin’s Mekenzie Steffen on defense. The forwards are Emma Maltais, Grace Zumwinkle, Abby Roque and Sophie Shirley with Roque and Shirley tying for the third forward spot. Wisconsin’s Kristen Campbell rounds out the team at goaltender.

The WCHA opens its 21st season the weekend of Sept. 21-22 as Minnesota hosts the Toronto Aeros and Minnesota Whitecaps in a pair of exhibition games. The puck drops on the regular season the weekend of Sept. 27-28 with four non-conference series and three exhibition games while league play begins Oct. 4-5 with Ohio State at St. Cloud State and Minnesota at Minnesota State. BUCKEYES

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY

• The No. 9/9 Ohio State women’s ice hockey team looks to get the 2019-20 season started on the right foot when it takes on St. Lawrence in its season opening series. Puck drop is slated for 6:07 p.m. ET Friday, Sept. 27 and 3:07 p.m. ET Saturday, Sept. 28. The non-conference matchup is set to take place at the OSU Ice Rink.

• The Buckeyes have faced the Saints 10 times in program history and has a 3-7 record. Prior to last season's split decision in Canton, N.Y., the two teams had not met since the 2009-10 season, where they also battled to a 1-1 weekend.

• Emma Maltais led the Buckeyes last season with 43 points from 15 goals and 28 assists, giving her a career high in points on her way to notching All-WCHA First Team status. Her 43 points are the 11th-tied total for a Buckeye in a single season, and she tied for 17th best in program history with 83 points. Her 28 assists she tallied tied her for sixth place for assists in a single season. Maltais rattled off an eight-game point streak near the end of the season, tying her for the eighth longest point streak in a season for any Buckeye player. Maltais finished the season tied for third in the WCHA in points, but her 0.80 assists-per-game led the league.

• Jincy Dunne, 2019 WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and All-WCHA First Team member, notched 28 points last season on 24 assists and four goals, tying her for the eighth-highest point total by a Buckeye defenseman in a single season. Her 68 career points put her in 10th place among all OSU defensemen in program history.

• Tatum Skaggs led the team with 17 goals and finished fourth on the season with 26 points. The junior enters this season with 63 points, on 40 goals and 23 assists, putting her four goals away from the being in the Top 10 in career goals at Ohio State.

• Sophie Jaques put up impressive numbers in her rookie campaign on her way to earning WCHA All-Rookie honors. The rising sophomore finished with 21 points from 16 assists and five goals.

• Andrea Braendli made an immediate impact in her freshman year, notching a .939 save percentage, the fourth best in program history. Her 1.88 goals-against-average is tied for third place in the record book, as are her six shutouts. With 16 wins last season, Braendli notched the fifth highest win total for any Buckeye in a single season.

• Emily West, a former American Development Model manager for USA Hockey, joins the staff for the 2019-20 season as an assistant coach. With USA Hockey, West worked with local hockey associations and programs nationwide to support age-appropriate training, competition and long-term athlete development. Prior to joining the USA Hockey staff in 2017, West worked at a multi-sport training facility and also coached hockey at various levels from youth and girls through high school.

• Four Buckeyes spent two weeks of the summer training and competing for Team USA and Hockey Canada. Jincy Dunne and Tatum Skaggs suited up for the Red, White and Blue in Lake Placid, N.Y. as part of the USA National Festival, while Emma Maltais and Sophie Jaques donned the Maple Leaf at Team Canada's National Women's Development Selection Camp.

• The backbone of every great team is the group of leaders that set an example for the rest of the team, and the Buckeyes have put together a solid group for the new season. Jincy Dunne will remain a captain for the 2019-20 season while Olivia Soares moves into the captain role after serving as an assistant last season.
